"Toronto Lawyer With A Gun In the Nanaimo Strike Riots," Toronto Star. September 4, 1913. Page 5. ---- Mr. James Roaf, Whose Son is a Mine Superintendent, Tells Thrilling Story of Situation During the Trying Days of August - Much Cruelty Reported ---- The British Columbia strike riots are brought close home to Toronto people by the arrival of Mr. James Roaf, the well-known Toronto lawyer, from the scene of conflict, where he, in the midst of scenes of the greatest excitement, patrolled in front of a house, rifle in hand, ready for any emergency.

The description of the situation which he found in the Coast Province is vivid in the extreme. The whole country about Nanaimo is in a state, of siege; men and women terrorized by striking miners; women and children forced into swamps and bushes, fired upon by mobs; armed men in constant watchfulness to protect themselves. their wives, and children; special police mobbed and soldiers riding through the country on trains loaded with maxim guns and rifles; these are some of the experiences which he related on his return from Vancouver where thousands of men are out of work owing to the labor troubles of mine owners and their employes.

"And yet there was no strike," declared Mr. Roal. The men walked out on August 12, and they didn't come back. They had no interview with the mine-owners. They didn't ask for more money or shorter hours: they had no complaint as to the conditions under which they were working. They just walked out, and then the terrible events which kept every decent man and woman in a constant state of suspense started, and lasted for one week. The mines have been kept idle for nearly four months."

His Son a Mine Superintendent. Mr. Roaf and his wife went to the South Wellington mines. which are five miles south of Nanaimo, to visit their son, James, who is superintendent there.

"On the night of August 12," said Mr. Roaf, "my wife, my son, and myself were sitting in his drawing-room reading and chatting. Suddenly we beard shouts and a cracking noise. I went out on the verandah, and saw two men running in a half-crouching position towards the houses They were both wounded, and we recognized them as two of the men who had been brought down to take the place of some of the striking miners. My son shouted to me: Take care of these workmen. And alone and unarmed he ran towards the mob. The rioters, we could see, were attacking those who had been working in the mine. We took the two wounded men and placed them in a back room, and prepared to defend ourselves. Rifles and revolvers were cleaned and loaded, and we prepared for the worst.

Mr. Roaf Armed Himself. "I found a rifle, and after making sure that everything was all right in the house, I loaded it and went out- side. I walked up and down the verandah with the gun in my hands. keeping up a steady patrol, and occasionally walking around the house. We could hear the shouts and cries of the mob as they attacked the workmen, and occasionally a shot would ring out. The night was cloudy, but at intervals the moon would shine through a rift in the clouds, and we were able to distinguish the forms of the fighting men, though their cries enough for us to were not clear distinguish the words. There was another mob in front of the mine office, and we could see by the flare of matches as they lit their pipes the fierce, blood-stained faces, and we knew what we might expect at their hands.

"One by one the workmen who had been assaulted came staggering toward the house, covered with blood. After a time the building became so crowded that it could hold no more, and we had them lie down behind the verandah railing, while we stood guard with the guns about the house. While we were patrolling up and down, one of the workmen. badly wounded, with his face and head terribly beaten, came toward the house, half-carrying, half-dragging, the unconscious form of his wife. We took her into the house. and gave her stimulants until she was finally revised. 'My children: Oh, my children! My God, what will happen them?" she cried in anguish.

Children Huddled in Room. "My son inquired the location of her house, and about midnight started out for the children. He found the poor little things, four of them, huddled in one room with no clothing but their night things, while down on the verandah he found the mate of the children's father, covered with blood. his clothing torn to ribbons and his face beaten to a pulp, lying unconscious.

"Somehow he managed to drag him to the house, where his wounds were dressed, and he was put away with the other wounded men. The house had been wrecked; furniture smashed, windows broken, piano chopped with an axe, and the trunks and drawers forced open, and their little savings and personal valuables taken.

"I had been patrolling the house and grounds with the rifle for some time, and was relieved by the mine carpenter while I went inside to try to comfort the women and children. The house was turned into a regular hospital, and to make matters worse the electric lights were shut off by the mob, and we were forced to stumble about in the dark until we could locate candles, lamps or anything that would burn.

Said They Were Threatened. "Several of the working miners had toid me that day that they received notices to quit work or they would be blown up with their children by dynamite and their homes burned to the ground.

Two of the miners who had been chased from their homes and fired upon were forced to hide in the swamp all night. A farmer who lived in the neighborhood had taken one of these men into his house, attended to his injuries, and was keeping him in hiding there. In some manner the main body of the mob learned that the injured mine worker was hiding in the house, and a crowd of five hundred surrounded the house. They called to the old man and told him that if he didn't surrender the miner they would burn his house, then blow him up.

Old Man Had Nerve But the old fellow was game. He got his gun, and bringing it to the window of an upper storey he pointed it into the mass, and told them that if they didn't get away from his house he would kill as many as he could before they killed him. His nerve saved him. Cowed by his determined attitude, the crowd broke up, and the old man stood guard over the miner until they all moved away. Then we learned that 200 men, special police, were on their way by boat from Vancouver city, and I immediately telephoned for assistance. Fortunately the mob hadn't cut the telephone wires, and we were still in communication with the city. The police at Nanaimo told me that as soon as the boat docked they would Push a special train to the mine with the special officers. He also said that a detachment of special officers, 200 strong, had been beaten up by the mob.

Eluding the Mob. A little later we got a message from Victoria to bring all the women and children to the railroad station; that the authorities were running a special train up to the mine 80 that wounded men and their wives children could be taken. We were afraid, however, to take them down to the station, as the mob had made it their headquarters. We deliberated for a while, held a little council of war, as it were, and decided to telephone to the city and have them run the train up to the colliery, load the wounded and the women and children on the train there, and thus elude the mob who were waiting at the station. The train came to the colliery, and we were able to get the folks aboard without molestation.

Beat Up Men Who Quit. Then the men who had continued working decided to quit, and, even after this concession, as fast as they left the mines the mob would seize them, four or five to each man, and the workman would be severely beaten up before they would let him go. My son stayed at the mine, and I. with the women and children and those who had been injured, went up to Nanaimo. When we arrived in Nanaimo we found a crowd of about 1,000 rioters waiting at the station. "They gathered about the train and seized every man who looked like a miner, and despite the efforts of the police, grabbed them and beat them until they were almost unconscious.

Revolvers For Camera Man At the Nanaimo docks there was a mob of fully 3,000 rioters waiting for the boat with the special police officers to arrive. Previous to this boat carrying 30 special police officers arrived from Vancouver city. but the rioters refused to allow them to land. Every time they would start down the gang plank, the mob would rush at them and force them back on the boat again.

"Then the boat came in sight bearing the 20 special officers. The rioters were ready waiting for them. The chief of police told me that he knew positively that over 400 of them were armed. As the boat approached the dock, a tourist who was standing near the gangway levelled a camera at the mob and took a picture. This seemed to infuriate the strikers, and in an instant there were 400 pistols levelled at him demanding that he smash his camera. or suffer the consequences. The chief of police obtained the consent of the miners to go aboard on condition that he secure the film and destroy it. This was done.

Fired On a Woman. "The trouble had also affected the Extension mine, which was near the South Wellington mine where my son was in charge. Mrs. Cunningham, wife of the superintendent of the Extension mine, was forced to walk five miles through swamp and undergrowth from the mine to Nanaimo. During her trip she was fired upon several times, but managed to reach Nanaimo unharmed. At this point an automobile was secured, and the party consisting of the wives of the officers of the mine drove to Ladysmith, a little town a few miles away.

"The Mayor of Nanaimo, I understand, was asked to call out the military, but at this time, it is said, he did not consider it necessary and refused. A temperance hotel, where some of the mine workers had been staying, was blown up by dynamite. One of the mine workers was also made the victim of a dynamiting outrage and had his right arm blown from his body. The rioters blamed the man himself for the accident, declaring that he was making a bomb to throw in their midst when it exploded.

Paper Did Not Publish. "By this time all the mines in the district were empty. The Nanaimo Herald proprietor received letters from the rioters threatening to dynamite his building and the paper did not come out that day. All the mine buildings had been wrecked. Expensive machinery destroyed and the little homes of the miners burned to the ground. One woman with a week-old babe in her arms was forced to flee from her home in the middle of the night and alone and unprotected made her way into the swamp with the builets of the rioters' rifles falling all around her. Nanaimo at this time was practically under control of the mob.

Soldiers Quelled Trouble. The Friday following the soldiers started to arrive. They took possession of the mine buildings and immediately placed several of the mob leaders under arrest. It was a common thing to see a train with a flat car in front on which was mounted Maxim guns manned by artillerymen riding through the country distributing ammunition to the soldiers. With the soldiers in charge and military rule established, things began to resume their normal state. The men went back to work. The injured were recovering, and the miners were returning to work. When I left there. things were in pretty fair shape again, concluded Mr. Roaf.

Israeli forces have conducted at least eight airstrikes on aid workers and facilities in Gaza since October despite direct communication with the groups, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report released on 14 May. “Israeli authorities did not issue advance warnings to any of the aid organizations before the strikes, which killed or injured at least 31 aid workers and those with them,” the report reads. “The eight incidents reveal fundamental flaws with the so-called deconfliction system, meant to protect aid workers and allow them to safely deliver life-saving humanitarian assistance in Gaza,” the HRW report continues. Multiple aid groups that have been victims of these Israeli airstrikes had been in communication with Israeli authorities about their locations and movements. One of the more recent incidents happened in April when Israel launched multiple airstrikes against a World Central Kitchen (WCK) convoy, killing several of its staff, one Palestinian translator, and foreign aid workers from Australia, the UK, Poland, and a dual US-Canadian citizen.

In the eight attacks mapped by HRW, at least 15 people, including two children, were killed, and 16 others were injured.The other seven attacks include strikes on the convoy of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in November, a UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) guest house in December, an MSF shelter in January, an International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) guest house in January, a UNRWA convoy in February, another MSF guest house in February, and the home of an American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera) employee in March. UN numbers at the end of April show 253 aid workers have been killed by Israeli attacks on Gaza since October, 188 of whom were UNRWA personnel.

One of the food aid workers Israel assassinated in Gaza is Jacob Flickinger who is a former Canadian marine and also a US citizen. He leaves behind his partner Sandy and a one-year-old baby boy. Jacob was reportedly the NGO’s team lead in Gaza. Canada has yet to say his name or cut ties with the genocidal and rogue Israeli regime.

📹 Footage from a BBC piece covering the deaths of 7 foreign aid workers with the World Central Kitchen (WCK) in an Israeli airstrike refuses to mention "Israel" as the party responsible for the slaughter.

The piece dances around ever mentioning the party responsible for the airstrike, instead discussing the "deaths" of the 7 foreign aid workers in "an airstrike". Even though Palestinian resistance forces do not possess such capabilities.

The piece even mentions how WCK coordinated its movements with the "IDF" (Israeli occupation forces [IOF]) but fails to connect the coordination with the murderous airstrike itself, choosing to avoid any mention of Zionist responsibility for the murder of the aid workers, which included British, Australian and Polish nationals, along with a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen and one Palestinian.

An Israeli strike in Gaza that killed seven aid workers for the non-profit World Central Kitchen has touched off fury and indignation inside the White House, prompting President Joe Biden to release a public statement using a word he has rarely invoked over the course of conflict that has been filled with endless tragedy: “Outraged.”

The deaths of the workers who were attempting to deliver food to starving civilians in the besieged enclave – including one dual US-Canadian citizen – has raised the frustration for Biden and his top officials to a new level, a senior administration official told CNN.

Biden’s statement that mourned the deaths of the seven workers included some of the most fiery and blunt language from the president since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October. He explicitly blamed Israel for failing to protect aid workers and civilians, and he said, “Incidents like yesterday’s simply should not happen.”

The strike on the World Central Kitchen workers has been a “standout incident” as far as the Biden White House is concerned, the official said, prompting serious consternation and concern in what had already been a moment of high tensions between the US and Israel.

The entire world should be "outraged"

As lawyers escalate job action to demand reform of Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) funding, the organization itself is now joining in on calls for more provincial funding.

Members of four defence lawyer organizations along with family lawyers that take on cases for Albertans eligible for legal aid support staged a walkout at courthouses in Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary on Friday.

The Criminal Defence Lawyers Association in Calgary, the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association in Edmonton, the Southern Alberta Defence Lawyers' Association and the Red Deer Criminal Lawyers Association represent hundreds of lawyers.

LAA receives provincial funding that pays for lawyers for Albertans who qualify for its services.

The lawyers have been calling for an increase in the rates paid to lawyers who take on legal aid cases, arguing that the province has fallen behind other jurisdictions.

"REFUGEES CAME FROM HILLS," Kingston Daily Standard. August 19, 1912. Page 1. ---- Their Privations Said to be Terrible. ---- B.C. Strike Zone Now Comparatively Quiet, With 1,200 Armed Men About. ---- Vancouver, B.C., Aug. 19. - With no further rioting and with more than 1,200 armed men comfortably distributed among the coal mining towns of the Vancouver Island strike zone, the residents have a chance for quiet nerves. The chief excitement centred in the bringing in of 25 refugees from the hills, where they had been driven last Wednesday by the rioters. Fourteen were women and children and the privations they had suffered were terrible. They had almost nothing to eat and their hands, faces and clothing were cut by their travels in the woods. They were first given the freedom of a Nanaimo restaurant, and were then looked over by a doctor to see they had no permanent injuries.

J. J. Taylor, vice-president of the Miners' Union and a prominent official of the B.C. Federation of Labor, is in jail along with John Naylor, president of the Cumberland Union. The miners are very indignant about these arrests on charges of inciting to riot. These arrests were the signal for general move on the part of union. Leaders in all the coast cities to call mass meetings to commence a public agitation for the withdrawal of the militia. Unusual measures are being taken to undermine the military end of the campaign and a call is being sent to all labor organizations to take steps to expel from the unions all militia men who have taken the field.

Vancouver Street Railwaymen's Union has already demanded that any of its members who now belong to the militia shall resign from the regiment. The strikers called a meeting in Nanaimo Saturday, but Col. Hall, who is in charge, called it off. On Sunday a mass meeting was held in the hall at Extension, but nothing was done except kick against the Government.

In addition to one hundred warrants sworn out Saturday against riot leaders in Nanaimo, another 85 were issued Sunday against residents of Ladysmith. In Ladysmith almost every non-union man has left town following personal hints passed out by the Miners' Committee. Included among those who were ordered get out were Patrick Malone, to ex- Mayor of Ladysmith and Councillor Lauderback.

Nanaimo residents declare that hundreds of men have been shipped in by I. W. W. leaders in Vancouver since the strike started and it is these strangers and not the real Nanaimo miners who have been heading the disturbances.
