#someone said has she ever watched a Netflix original..... thats not what she meant and Netflix originals are a big part of the problem #like even the more successful indie studios like a24 struggle to get their films widely distributed #when in the 70s 80s 90s u cld literally just make a movie and have it distributed #and lfc it wasn't easy but it was possible! and maybe it wasn't financially successful but u cld build a name for yourself without a backup #now u either need lots of money or connections or lots and lots of luck to get ur film out

Everyone taking the Steamboat Willie design and making it do things Disney wouldn't sanction like....

you could have done that anyway. Disney would not have sued you for that. He didn't need to be in the public domain for you to do that.

Disney would have had a problem with you if you tried to sell Steamboat Willie. Not that you made him swear ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Public Domain is about being able to sell your version of the character, not "do whatever you like with it for free". You could do whatever you like with it on the internet anyway, you will not face consequence. Just as long as you didnt try to make money off of it - no one was going to come after you.

#like so much of what im seeing is like.... you could have done that on december 31st #disney would not have sent the lawyers after you lol #the only thing that actually seems to understood the public domain thing is.... a video game that has potential ties to nazis so uhhhh #dont support that thank u #(and as a general rule - be sceptical of ANYTHING you see using 88)#public domain means someone can make their own shorts or write a book about the character #.... instead we just seem to see cheap cash ins in the horror genre bc 'what if family friendly thing is NOT haha we're so funny'#like theyre generally not even GOOD and its just boring that THATS the only take people HAVE #ppl make a big fuss over these characters being in the public domain but they dont actually know WHAT to do with them #because. honestly? .... theyre not that interesting #is winnie the pooh that easy to write new stories with WITHOUT the rest of the cast (Who are slowly entering public domain)??#does anyone ACTUALLY care about steamboat willie???#we only care bc its sticking it to the Mouse House #but no one actually has any ideas for these characters outside of that #if Disney hadnt adapted winnie the pooh... would that terrible horror film have been made?#probably not!

hey yesterday i got distracted until 5am into browsing lists of old animated movies on wikipedia and there's a bunch of stuff that i wanna get around to dig up & watch but i crave even more older, more obscure, more forgotten stuff

plz feel free to drop any obscure animated flick you know of so i can go check it ( extra bonus points if you're not american and it's a movie from your country )

#stuff i fell onto that i particularly wanna get around includes #Rock & Rule : scifi fantasy. lou reed sings the villain's songs. there's other big names in the soundtrack. absolutely bombed financially #Hugo the Hippo : i dont know much about it but seemed cute as hell #Shinbone Alley : top of the list this one i think ? arbitrarily . theres a super cool aging femme fatale cat in there #Dick Deadeye (or Duty Done) this oness complicated because it's so painfully british as in they threw racist asian designs in there ( ofc)#but the animation style is kinda charming...i need to watch it & hate it #Mr Bickford : claymation movie set to orchestral music written by frank zappa. this one seems . like a lot #its not gonna be an easy watch but i NEED to watch it #also not one that i found yesterday but i had a while back and i never managed to find ANY trace of #il giornalino di gian burrasca. 1992 italian film based on a then popular series of books about a rowdy kid...#i have no reason to want to find it other than i randomly stumbled upon it & the very few images i could find looked very charming #and the FACT that i can't even find any clips of it online is frustrating.#if somehow ur italian and u know where to find this hmu;#shevr

He didn't know what compelled her to come into the shop last night. He didn't know what drew her in put them on one another's path, nor did he knew what about himself it was that so attracted her, but he wasn't about to question it, as he finished shyly, and yet completely earnestly, "I'm...I'm very excited for tomorrow night too-there's no one I'd rather spend an evening out with than you."

Things are just so bleak man.

#vent #just me rambling #SO many fucking things #first off and maybe the least bad of all #that one studio that contacted me for a feature film turned me down ultimately #i WANT so dearly to work on features. it's what i want to do. but nobody will give me a chance #because they all want experience on features to work on features. well how do you guys think this works #i'm so tired of it and discouraged #but ultimately that's the least of the issues because #my usual studio is going under. they been struggling financially for years and the CEO did a special meeting to say it #they're lowering activity (one friday every two weeks is off to try and save money) and have 6 months to get back on their feet #which is nothing. they can't find producers willing to dump money in the studio in 6 months esp with ENOUGH to pull it out of the gutter #if they're not better off in 6 months the CEO said ''then ill get back to you with terrible news'' and didn't detail but we know. we know #it's basically said and done in my mind. my main studio as big as it was is crashing down. and idk what ill do.#i bought a flat in this city due to this studio being there- without it this place has no more work to offer me. empty city #job security doesn't exist anymore #and we all know why. producers are much more squeamish about investing in animation because ai is here #why would you give money to allow hundreds of workers to live and pour passion in projects when you can pay a pathetic percentage of that #with midjourney or whatever the shit and get an easy cheap show. rack in more money for smaller an investment #and tumblr is going down that route too. can't get a fucking break anywhere #i'm heartbroken and grieving the world we lost #in a bunch of years looking at art while 100% knowing a person made it with intent will be a memory #being able to not even think about it is already out of our hands #ai 'art' will be everywhere and it will become a new normal. and i'm just.. man.#the world feels so empty already

I won't be writing on it here, but I saw Godzilla x Kong tonight. It was exquisitely stupid. And it knows it. It was exactly what I needed.

#to those whose first Godzilla movie was Godzilla Minus One... you should know that movie is very much the exception and not the rule #when you're talking about the larger series of course #film critic hat on for just a moment: how disappointing American kaiju movies just can't allegorize Godzilla very well at all #these tags are all the big lizard but the Eighth Wonder of the World is easy to root for too

a thrift shop I follow is selling this camera and it's not TOO expensive (for what I expected) and i'm soooo tempted

#when i say not too expensive I mean for what I'd expect #but im not knowleadgeable at all in cameras so maybe it is expensive lkaskklas #it's like 55 dollars?? which I think is good? but it is used and stuff so idk #my main issue is that while I think it's non expensive for what i'd expect... im not that much of a photo girlie and also I think it's big #so I probably wouldnt take it everywhere #so is it worth spending the money on it #also I think it uses a specific film that idk if its sold in here so....#plus if it ever broke down/had any issues idk if I would find easy/cheap repair options #but i've been wanting a like non proffesional camera for like a year now and this one is sooooo beautiful #i love like the looks of vintage cameras like I would feel so cool owning this alksklas

#gyaa vents #sitting in my film critical thinking class #and im so boreddd #not by the content #but by the way the professor is talking about it #he speaks like a film bro #which i guess he is technically....#he keeps using big fancy words when he really doesnt have to #and he keeps pausing to remember those words so the lecture is literally incomprehensible #my japanese class meets 4 days a week #except thats not what it said when i signed up for it.....#im bitter #im going to be so busy this semester and after all my past semesters being easy breezy #im not happy about it #its always hard for me to complain to school friends about these sorts of things #because their course load is basically double mine (theyre stem majors)#and so i feel bad about complaining when they have so much more on their plates #i just want to pace around the house talking about the nasuverse....#is that too much to ask for????

maybe an odd thing to say, but i always see your tags and feel extra happy that you look for the positives. he had a tricky life it seems, and things ended sadly, but the way you focus on what you liked about him whilst also respecting/acknowledging the sad part implicitly is really nice. <3

i feel a bit guilty for crushing on him bc of all of it, so it makes me feel better that we can all see it positively in spite of things, so thanks!

Oh this is such a sweet message to send, thank you ❤️❤️ I really appreciate your words. I think of it like, of course we will always miss Phil. Part of his story will always be sad. And remembering his struggles is a way to honor him, too, and maybe help other people

But the vast majority of his life was really really good!! Phil spoke all the time about how grateful he was, how happy and blessed he felt to live the life he had. The films and theater and art he created, his community, his family. And no matter what, over 20 years of sobriety is a huge accomplishment, that’s over two decades of life that no one can take away from him or his loved ones. He/they/we have a lot to be proud of, a lot of happy memories to cherish!

Phil was sensitive. He said something once about how living such an intense life made for some difficult days and some very, very beautiful days. I like to think he had a lot more of those very beautiful days :)

#easy to stay positive when the one you love is so brilliant and full of life and Good <3 #ask #anonymous #next year will be 10 years which is hard. a lot of difficult feelings #but aside from That Big Number being a tough one #from talking to some of his family and friends it seems like a lot of them are doing well. happy to share about him yk. not just sad #like this year his mom watched one of his films for the first time since he died. ❤️❤️❤️#idk it’s just getting easier to smile instead of crying instantly. grief and time
