She did not care to watch what she knew must come next, either. She drew a chair out from the wall and rather pointedly turned it toward the window. There were gulls swooping and crying over the waves. She wondered if they had followed the swanship all the way from Mithlond.
Behind her Elrohir said with amusement in his voice, “Still squeamish, I see.”
She bore him no response. Her brief foray as apprentice in the healing halls of the Last Homely House had ended in grave indignity and she did not care to recollect it.
For a while the proceedings behind her required too much in the way of clatters and hisses and murmured reassurances for any explanations to be made, whether from Arahad, who sounded like he was working very hard not to whimper, nor from her, who had no intention of turning around and beholding the slaughter. Finally Elrohir said with a good measure of gentleness in his tone, “That’s the last of it, good boy, we’ll take a little break before we finish.”

sometimes you really do just have to think about how Aragorn II son of Arathorn II son of Arador son of Argonui son of Arathorn I son of Arassuil son of Arahad II son of Aravorn son of Aragost son of Arahad I son of Araglas son of Aragorn I son of Aravir son of Aranuir son of Arahael son of Aranarth son of Arvedui son of Araphant son of Araval son of Arveleg II son of Arvegil son of Argeleb II son of Araphor son of Arveleg I son of Argeleb I is crowned king of united Gondor & Arnor and immediately uses it as an excuse to rename himself Elessar because yes yes twenty-four generations of chieftains of the Dunedain & kings of Arthedain is all well and good but he wants to sound like Elrond’s kid dammit. if it would bother his forefathers that he wants to ditch the ar(a)- prefix then maybe arathorn ii should have stuck around to have a say instead of getting himself killed when aragorn was two but instead elrond’s the one who actually raised him thanks and he wants to be really really really unsubtle about that and there’s nothing anyone else can do about it so there. also he’s extremely extra and figured out how to name himself after elrond and elrond's dad at the same time and also do a matchy thing with his wife in the process (because the shared ar(a)- prefix wasn’t enough because aragorn, like everyone else in his entire family in the entire history of the world, is extremely extra sometimes) so like really how could he not
anyway then aragorn and arwen went on to look at that whole twenty-four generations of chieftains & kings shared ar(a)- prefix again later and again said “hm no thanks we're gonna stick with the “elrond's family” thing thx” and named their kid son of the elves. just in case anyone was wondering whether aragorn had had second thoughts at some point.
like i just. think about that a lot

the line of elros ◈ chieftains of the dúnedain ◈ headcanon disclaimer
Arahad was the son of Araglas, and the seventh Chieftain of the Dúnedain. During his rule, the Watchful Peace came to an end when Sauron returned to his fortress of Dol Guldur and spurred his orcs to multiply. Arahad was wearied by these struggles and leaned on his wife, the wise-woman Silivreneth, for support.           The son of Arahad and Silivreneth was Aragost, who was firmer of will than his father and more active in fighting against the rising turmoil in the North. Though Sauron focused his efforts on Gondor and Rhovanion, not Eriador, he was ever vigilant in his defense of his lands. His wife Alphalas was dear friends with Lord Elrond’s wife Lady Celebrían, bonding with her over their shared love for swans, for which Alphalas was named and Celebrían honored as a symbol of her mother’s Telerin heritage.           Alas, Arahad’s wisdom and Aragost’s guarded watch upon the Misty Mountains were, though valiant, imperfect, and Celebrían was waylaid by orcs upon her return from a visit to her parents in Lothlórien. All her companions were slain, including Alphalas, who had been eager to meet the great Lord and Lady of the Golden Wood. Celebrían’s twin sons Elladan and Elrohir found and recovered her, but she was deeply affected by her time in bondage to the orcs and not even Elrond’s medical abilities could save her. The next year, she departed for the West in search of deeper healing.           Alphalas’ young son Aravorn was only twelve years old at the time of her death, and before she sailed, Celebrían made sure to pass along his mother’s love to the child. He was the last Heir of Isildur to know the Lady of Imladris. He carried this sorrow all his life, marrying an equally solemn woman, Sírdhem, whose own parents had been slain by orcs.           The son of Aravorn and Sírdhem was Arahad II, named for his great-grandfather. Despite his parents’ melancholy attitudes, Arahad was a boisterous man of great cheer. He frequently traveled westward to the borders of the Shire, and though he never trespassed upon the land of the periannath he took great heart and comfort from watching their flourishing community, knowing his and his fathers’ efforts to fight against evil were doing good in the world.          It was on one such journey that Arahad met Ellother, a hunter from a small community of Men in the Hills of Evendim. They became fast friends, and soon Ellother asked to be Arahad’s spouse. Though Ellother had a lesser lifespan than their Dúnadan husband, their love was great and from it came an heir, Arassuil.           In the first part of his rule as Chieftain, Arassuil established trade with the hobbits of Bree, delighted by their recent development of pipe-weed. But soon troubles increased in the North, with the orcs of the Misty Mountains growing bold enough to raid Eriador. Arassuil and his rangers fought tirelessly to hold them back, but one party managed to reach the Shire where they were fought off by a brave band of hobbits.           Upon hearing tale of their leader, Bandobras “Bullroarer” Took, Arassuil was greatly impressed and traveled to honor him in person, though Bullroarer had only a vague idea of who this strange Man was. However, this friendship was fortunate, for soon the Long Winter arrived. Many lives were lost throughout Eriador, and with the aid of the wizard Mithrandir, Arassuil and the Rangers of the North brought supplies from Rivendell to the Shire to aid the hobbits.           As he aged, Arassuil grew weary from his wounds, and was forced to spend more and more time in Imladris where his grandson Argonui was growing into a young man. Though he cherished this time with his family, Arassuil worried that he was not doing enough as Chieftain. His wife Glórineth, a few decades younger than him, bravely took up the task of leading the Rangers in their journeys alongside their son Arathorn I. Glórineth and Arathorn continued to aid the hobbits of the Shire and also to the dwarves of the recently-sacked Erebor as they made their long pilgrimage westward to the Blue Mountains.

Today is one of those “let’s think about Tolkien’s weird obsession with Second-of-his-name trope” days.
Because really, I still don’t know why but nearly half of Tolkien’s heroes, or characters of particular relevance to the plot/history of Middle-Earth are the second guys to wear that name.
I mean, the most glaring exemple is Aragorn who is actually Aragorn II, son of Arathorn, you guessed it, II. And in Gondor you have Denethor II, son of Ecthelion II. Also fun fact, had Boromir been a Ruling Steward, he would have been called Boromir II. (Unrelated, but Boromir the first was a bit of a badass, and one of my favorite obscure characters). Thorin Oakenshield? Thorin the fucking second. And so is his cousin, Dain II Ironfoot.
So I decided to sit down, reread LOTR’s appendices and see where that trend goes.
So hereby is the (maybe not exhaustive list) of all the characters that wear the number II behind their names.
Kings of Arnor and Chieftain of the Dunedain
Argeleg II and Arveleg II, no, they’re not father and son. Kings of the Arthedain. There’s nothing else about them, except that during Argeleb’s reign, there was the great plague of the Third Age, so that puts him above most of the other kings for relevance.
Arahad II: chieftain of the Dunedain
Arathorn II: aka Gilraen’s husband
Aragorn II, son of Arathorn, Heir of Isildur
Interestingly, Arvedui, while an important figure, is the first and last of his name, but then again, I guess you can’t have two kings called “The Last One”.
Kings of Gondor
Atanatar Alcarin, “The Glorious”, whose reign represents the summit of Gondor’s power. Guess what? He was Atanatar II
Romendacil II: okay this one is an interesting one, and one of my obscure faves. (Seriously, Gondor’s history is fascinating). Seemingly one the great kings Gondor had. Per ROTK, Appendix A he “was a man of great vigour, and in 1240 Narmacil, to rid himself of all cares, made him Regent of the realm.” Interesting because he’s the first and last Regent, Gondor apparently had. A sort of proto-Stewardship? Why was the title not used after that? But anyway, guy ruled Gondor, in his uncle’s, then father’s and finally in his own name. Also first one to reach out toward the Northmen, to conclude alliances with them. Invited some Northmen to serve in Gondor’s armed forces. Send his son and heir to Vidugavia’s court. So generally open-minded. Good captain, crushed the Easterlings. Also built the pillars of the Argonath. On the downside, his policy concerning the Northmen led to the Kin-Strife.
Hyarmendacil II and Narmacil II : unremarkable
Eärnil II : penultimate King of Gondor. Also one the greats. See the pattern, yet?
Stewards
Belecthor II : under his office, the White Tree died.
Turin II : built Henneth Annun
Ecthelion II, Denethor II, and Boromir would-have-been-II
Durin’s Line
Technically there has been a Durin II, however, nothing is said about him. We know Durin III was given one of the Seven Rings, by Celebrimbor, and Durin VI awoke the Balrog in the Moria.
Nain II : only thing we know is that his son, Dain I, was killed by a dragon.
And then come-on Tolkien, it’s getting ridiculous
Thrain II : died in Dol Guldur,
his son Thorin II Oakenshield
Dain II Ironfoot, who ends up King under the Mountain.
Interestingly enough, all Kings of Rohan have a unique name.
Same goes for the Kings of Numenor, except that there are two Amandil and Elendil, who bookend the Numenor era.
Tar Amandil, second ruling King of Numenor and his son Tar Elendil.
And then we have the Lords of Andunië, Amandil and his son Elendil, who then becomes the first High King of the Numenoreans in exile. Both are descendants of Tar Amandil and Tar Elendil, through Elendil’s daughter, Silmariën.
Also there’s King Bard II of Dale, succeeds his father during the War of the Ring.

Arahad had never seen something like what had reared shrieking up out of the water. The smell like a long-dead whale on a sunbaked beach. He didn’t want to think about it again. The sea stretched all around their foundered little oil-ship and he could barely look at it. That was just the top. And the fresh wet clawing membranous memory of what had burst up out of that black surface made him want to scream at someone to flee with him back to safe and solid land.
There were dead men on the deck now.

Arahad son of Aravorn son of Aragost son of someone along the line who had bequeathed to him an unlucky streak a half a mile wide because this was a disaster and it wasn’t supposed to happen this way.
He said in a hiss, “What in the blazes are you doing down here?!”
