Shout out to anxious subs who need clear directions. Anxious subs who need a lot of checking-in and reassurance. Anxious subs who need help communicating their needs and desires. Anxious subs who want their dom to take control and order them around and take the burden of choice away from them. Anxious subs who just want their dom to turn their brain to mush so they don't have to think anymore.
You're worth the extra effort and the extra communication, and I hope you find exactly the accommodation you need to have a happy and fulfilling kink experience <3

Reviewing every rpg book on my shelf: 5, Flying Circus
Tumblr media
Flying Circus is a a game by Erika Chappell where you fly planes, have messy dramatic relationships, and find out who you are. Sometimes all at the same time. More specifically you fly *rickety planes from the dawn of aviation* and have messy, dramatic relationships, and find out who you are *in an essentially queer way*.
The first thing I love about Flying Circus is it's sheer audacity in taking pbta (usually deployed for low crunch storygame-y titles) and twisting it into a highly detailed and technical system for running dogfights. I think its really clever how Erika has taken the idea of a detailed combat system are re-appraised it from the ground up in the context of dogfighting.
There is no grid based movement here, it simply is not useful in the three dimensional world that planes inhabit. Instead your positioning is modelled through altitude and air speed, with each being tradeable for the other and spend able to perform maneuvers.
Tumblr media
Honestly the whole system is rather intimidating (a fact the book freely admits). Each plane requires a little personal instrument panel sheet (and a few extra side sheets) that resemble somthing you would expect in a euro-game boardgame more than an rpg. The system goes as far as modelling how your plane performs as you use up your modelling fuel and with varying altitude. There are also a lot of fairly involved moves that it feels would be a little tricky to keep aware of while running a dogfight. However, from what I hear, the system works well and, once you understand it, isn't /that/ tricky to run. I think this isn't actually that crunchy when compared to your standard tactical battlers, it's just completely new (and working in a zone most people have less of an intuitive understanding of [although its worth noting that most peoples intuitive understanding of medieval style combat is dead wrong]) so we are unably to draw upon our preexisting assumptions.
You will notice I have to fall back on reports and intiitions here because I am yet to be able to play the game, which is honestly my biggest problem with it: it carves such a specific niche that I think I will really struggle to ever bring it to the table. Anyone I have talked to about the game has always responded to the effect of 'I don't think I'm into planes enough for this'.
I am also not half as into planes specifically as Erika Chappell is. But what I am into is getting deep into things in general, and this whole system excels at letting you get incredibly technical and nerdy about your plane (as far as things like exactly what radiator fluid it has, if you use the advanced rules) and making those choices actually matter in play.
ok, that's probably enough about planes (a phrase I anticipate has never once been uttered by the author of this book), what are you doing when you get out of the planes?
The game follows a cycle of mission and downtime, which you spend relieving stress (in healthy or unhealthy ways) and running upkeep on your company. This is where you do a lot of the character work and bring into focus the 'coming of age' narrative that the game intends.
Which seems a good lead in to talking about the playbooks. Each playbook is focused around a particular thematic idea or experience, which is helpfully spelled out directly in a 'themes' section for each one. This isn't a game where you play as a fighter because you want to solve problems by hitting them but rather one where you play as a Fisher because you want to engage with "a queer reclamation of the monstous", or a scion because you want to engage with "privilege and power, and what obligations come with it", or a believer because you want to engage with "a mindset that thrives on radicalism", or a survivor because you want to engage with "a metaphor for what it feels like to be a transgender person escaping an unwelcome or abusive situation".
Obviously, alongside themes you do also get a load of cool abilities to use.
Of the many games that claim to be ghibli-esque but I think Flying Circus hews closest on account of two things: understanding miyazaki's perspective on war and also due to being absolutely unhinged about planes.

Lex! I loved your boyfriend hcs, I'd love to hear your headcanons on the guys as fathers 👀
omg Joz yes!! This is such a cute idea, thank you 🥰 ✨ The ST boys as fathers ✨
💕STEVE HARRINGTON is a superdad. He loves friendly competition with his (many - five, to be exact) children to see who can throw something the farthest, who can get to the car the fastest, and who can finish their desert first. - Bedtime stories are crowded with all of them on the same bed, huddled around Steve as he does voices for all of the characters. - Food is always creative and messy, and Steve encourages curiosity in every way. "Don't play with your food" is not a rule to be found in the Harrington household. - The rowdy bunch attends each other sporting events, band concerts, and school plays in a pack which is forever recognizable because of course their outfits are color coordinated.
💕BILLY HARGROVE loves his little girl more than anything else in this world. He is very protective, letting her roam at a safe distance, and worries more than he lets on about her safety and emotional wellbeing, and whatever she wants, he teaches her how to earn. - His little angel is a superfan of his metal music, so of course he picks up an extra shift every other weekend to pay for her drumming lessons. Every time a friend comes to the house while she's practicing, they comment on the noise, and all Billy says is, "I know. She's gonna be a star someday," with the proudest smile on his face. - Every time something comes up while Billy is spending time with his daughter, he tells whoever he's talking to, "Hang on. I have to ask the boss," and turns to his daughter and whispers in her ear, her face becoming very serious before she gives a quiet answer back to him. - He teaches her how to fix her own things -- the car, the toilet, the legos she knocked over on accident. He never wants her to have to rely on anyone else to solve her problems, and he teaches her to be self sufficient along with his support.
💕ARGYLE is full of childlike wonder at all times, so it's no surprise that he is the fun dad. He takes his twin boys on adventures every chance they get, and he encourages their creativity every step of the way. One of his boys is an avid painter while the other is a violinist. The walls inside their home are adorned with murals always being worked on inspired by ambient strings in the background. - Argyle's kids are homeschooled because their family prefers to hit the road for the sunny months of the year, and he figures they learn more from seeing the world than they ever could stuck inside a classroom. - He makes up stories on the fly to tell his kids, and he's always forgetting the characters names, but they don't seem to mind. The stories involve silly but useful life lessons that he wished someone would've told him when he was their age instead of having to figure them out on his own. They'll thank him someday. - The fashion sense in their family is absolutely wild. Argyle wants his kids to be able to express themselves freely with their style choices just like he does, and the result is a colorful array of garments always strewn about the home, lots of them covered in paint, and sometimes on purpose to add a little flavor.
💕JONATHAN BYERS is your average, working class father, but he is adamant about making time to spend with his family. His two daughters starting high school has been the biggest challenge for him so far, but he never misses a dance recital or a soccer game, and he's always home in time to have dinner with everyone so he can hear about their days. - The Byers family is big on gifts from the heart, so for every birthday, Jonathan makes his girls their own mixtapes complete with songs they already know and love combined with songs he thinks they should hear. It warms his heart when he hears the tracks blaring from their respective bedrooms while they get ready for school each morning. - Being an equal caretaker has always been important to him, so Jonathan took it upon himself to learn to braid. When his girls were little, he used to braid their hair before bed. Now, even though they can do it themselves, they still seek him out at least once a week or so for the perfect plait. - He is the chauffeur for his girls and all of their friends regularly. He'll take them to the mall, the arcade, to school, wherever is needed, and he never complains about it. He feels like it's a gift to be able to spend that time together while they can.
💕EDDIE MUNSON is a single dad whose son is an absolute carbon copy of him. The little guy is never sitting still, his long wild curls billowing behind him as he darts around the house with his plastic sword saving the day. Eddie is pretty sure his first words were "stick it to the man," and he smiles with pride when his son says some off the wall thing because the Munsons wear their weird like a crown. - Above everything, Eddie teaches his son to be kind. Be kind to people, be kind to animals, be kind to places, and be kind to things because the world needs more of it, and it all comes back to you. He teaches him how to put spiders outside instead of kill them and to invite the kid sitting alone on the playground to play pirates with him. Always be kind. - Corroded Coffin has a new stand in drummer while Gareth is away at school. Eddie's son is still fairly young, but he has great rhythm, and playing an instrument proves to be a great way to channel his energy. There is a new house rule that says sticks are for smacking drums only, and you can probably guess why. - Eddie plans small DnD oneshots for he and his son to play through together, and he loves it. The adventures, the battles, and the roleplaying are great for the imagination, and it's their favorite bonding time. Last year's Christmas present to his son was a custom set of abalone shell dice, and he treasures nothing more.
These were so fun to do!! Thank you for getting me thinking outside of my usual box :3 ❤️‍🔥 Requests are open!

2023 Introspective
This year started with cutting off a toxic person who had already shut me out of mutual friend spaces but kept stringing me along with "maybe in a few more months I'll let you back in". 2022 was rough on its own, especially pre-antidepressants, but a huge part of it was stuff involving this person. Blocking them and finally accepting that it was not worth trying to repair what little relationship was left was the most freeing thing I've ever done and helped me to continue that with any other rude unpleasant individual I've had to share spaces with. It's been genuinely wonderful to realize I don't have to sit there and listen to bad takes or people who are needlessly mean, so I'm glad something came out of that friendship nightmare scenario.
It still took a lot of time to not sit there in anger and frustration spirals over the way things ended up, but in February I got permission from my bosses to bring my dog Chili to work with me due to needing to keep him and our other dog from playing while she was recovering from her spay. I ended up realizing that even though Chili is a huge anxiety baby, having him with me legitimately was helping distract me from negative thoughts spirals and gave me something positive to focus on when I was getting frustrated by work-related stuff in the moment. He ended up helping a couple coworkers come down from panic attacks later in the year too. My boss likes how "calm" he is enough that he gave me permission to bring Chili to work all the time (within reason), so he's come with me on most non-event days. His progress has been slow, but he's also been improving from the regular socialization!
I finally started to really focus on my own art and developing my own products and designs, both for my personal shop and for the shop at work. I've come out the other side of this year with 9 new enamel pin designs between the two! (A couple I haven't shared yet! ;D)
I was finally given an Adderall prescription which magically solved my problem where I couldn't stay awake during the day no matter how much sleep I'd gotten! And also it started helping me focus a little better too, but genuinely the non-sleepy thing was the most lifechanging part of the medication for me. The pit in my stomach when I was told that person felt like I was stalking and surveilling them if I was quiet in a call or stream despite years of me communicating that I was constantly struggling to even stay conscious was... HOO BOY. After years of fighting for my life to stay awake in college and sometimes even while DRIVING TO AND FROM WORK,,,,,,,, I really thought something was seriously wrong with me (besides the ADHD since I didn't realize it was a symptom of that)
With toxic people removed from my social spaces and general perception, I've finally started to join group calls with my friends again without anxiety or fear of not being welcome. It's helped me start to get back into playing games again, and I've been able to get into a few that either have built in accessibility features to avoid hand strain, or I've been able to modify my hardware setup to help with issues I was running into before. I've finally managed to pick up Warframe again, and I'm bouncing between that and Path of Titans without being hopelessly deep in a hyperfocus.
I officially got promoted at my job to Retail & Visitor Services manager (and got a $3 raise in Nov!!). While I'm struggling with finding help to ease my increased workload, I'm definitely way better off than before we hired on extra staff. It's given me a lot of networking opportunities (and excuses to go on field trips on the clock for ~*networking*~) and I've been juuuust starting to poke my head into local groups. One is a monthly artists crafting meetup right by work that starts right when I clock out! :D
I had the energy and free time to start branching out and trying other arts and crafts hobbies that had been interesting me! Ended up getting a serger machine to help really tidy up clothes that I make! I got into linocut & block printing, and have been having a lot of fun working on designs for that kind of printing. I even made a few printed shirts! And of course there was Andromeda, the first puppet I've ever made, and pretty much my proudest achievement in all my years of art so far.
I've honestly been spending less time on social media proper, usually forgetting to check tumblr for days or weeks at a time. Which has been good and bad, but overall better for me to stop feeling like I HAVE to fully backlog everything ever.
I got my first tattoo this year after wanting one for years and years! And that opened up a whole new can of worms and now I'm ending the year with 5 tattoos and 2 more scheduled in the next couple months oops! My first tattoo was Joltik, with my first ever pet spide!
I started keeping spiders this year after years of being too concerned about keeping pets that required live feeding! That also was a slippery slope. I picked up Indrid my red-backed jumper and Autumn my pumpkin patch t at the end of January, and now I have them, a regal jumper, a red-knee t, and a togo starburst t. You'd never guess that less than a decade ago I was scared shitless of all spiders. :> Especially now that I will occasionally free-handle wild spiders that need relocation to someplace safer. (Mostly still just jumpers tho)
Things aren't perfect by any means and I still have a lot of areas I want to personally improve myself in, but I feel like overall this has been a really really good year for me and I want to keep that momentum going into 2024! More art! More projects just for me! More time with friends! More enjoying games! More tidying my space literally and metaphorically!

Hi Jalebi! After post kidnapping when Arnav finally returns and Khushi tells everyone the truth about Shyam everyone believes her except Anjali. Do you think Arnav and Khushi should have focused on making Anjali's condition better by bringing Shyam's truth in front of her with all the proves instead of trying to work in their relationship? Cause the misunderstanding was solved and Arnav knew Khushi was innocent, so solving Anjali's issue in the first place would have automatically solved half of the problems don't you think? Pretty sure Khushi wouldn't have said No. Also why this Idea never crossed Arnav's mind! Considering he loved Anjali so much and she's everything to him.
Hi Anon,
Post the revelation Arnav and Khushi are, understandably, in a messy situation.
Khushi, under any circumstances, shouldn't be near Anjali until Anjali is stable enough because Anjali is going through a trauma. Not only did she discover the husband she blindly loves is being accused of a harasser, stalker, bigamist, kidnapper and murderer - she's also told that the sister in law she dearly loves probably tried to have an extra marital affair with her husband.
Also, they had no proof. Absolutely no proof. But what was really important was that Arnav should have had an honest chat with Anjali. Like spoken to her about the whole truth.
Arnav does try, repeatedly, to talk to her and is pushed away by Anjali but he never goes "Di, do you know I married Khushi because I believed she had an affair with Shyam?"
And he would've gotten an access to Anjali because Anjali also is under the similar impression thanks to Shyam and his clever manipulation.
And Arnav, gently, should have told Anjali the whole truth.
No one in the show was actually talking to Anjali and I think that makes sense right. Every family member protected Anjali so much that no one was answering her questions, no one was actually consoling her or asking her what plagues her.
So that left an emotional vacuum. And Arnav had screwed up so much with Khushi that if he didn't pay attention to her he would've lost her forever (they screwed up that plot line though).
And there's a reason for Anjali to be emotionally isolated at this time - cause that allows her to succumb to Shyam's manipulations. If the family actually helped her heal then plot wise Shyam couldn't come back.
So it's one of the few instances where it makes sense that everyone is making mistakes post the traumatic event. Arnav doesn't realize Anjali needs truth and is torn between losing his wife and sister. Akash is too angry with Payal and busy with work to field Anjali's questions. Nani is just too afraid to lose Anjali to even discuss that topic and Mami just wants to console Anjali and nothing else.
So nobody is actually helping Anjali makes sense of the situation - so Shyam finds the perfect spot to meet Anjali in hiding and give her an explanation of the events.
That it's a horrible misunderstanding.
He misunderstood Khushi's intentions and falsely blamed her.
Khushi misunderstood him to be the kidnapper.
Khushi's family misunderstood him to be a bachelor.
Arnav misunderstood their involvement.
So it's a messy affair. And Shyam's own misunderstandings, anger and accusations have now changed into unrelenting love for his wife and faith and happiness for his saale-sahab's marital life. Which is why Anjali keeps insisting that love changes everyone.
Because I believe Shyam plays half admit and half manipulate and Anjali chooses to believe her husband (she's also gaslit a lot).
So you see, this was actually very necessary to the plot.
Sometimes it's good when the characters can't make the right decisions.
Best,
Jalebi

TTRPG Quarterbacking part 2: Solutions, kind of? Mostly vague ideas about solutions.
Tumblr media
So I outlined the problem (as it is) in part 1. This is the part where I think out loud about what to do about it as a designer.
Foreword
I'm going to put this as the first thing because it can't be stressed enough and because I don't really want to hear about how this isn't an issue at anyone's specific table or whatever because that's not the point. Communicate with your players. If someone's doing it a little too much you can probably just ask them to cut it out and they probably will. Folks are generally pretty reasonable.
We will ignore this going forward because it's a really glib answer from a DESIGN perspective. But keep it in mind.
The second thing is that at the end of the day you don't want to like, stifle general table talk unless you're really, really sure you want to do that. A tabletop game is ultimately going to be an avenue for folks to hang out and sometimes that involves like, giving each other advice. This is more about ways to build and run a game such that naturally it doesn't come up as much.
Strategic Quarterbacking
Getting this one out of the way first. In group-based games especially, the biggest source of this is the combination of strict role protection and role requirement. A great example of this is the “holy trinity” of DPS/tank/healer in an MMO. For a noncombat example, think about a heist crew: Shadowrun for instance wants everyone to have specific, specialized roles and you’ll probably want a dedicated face, decker, magic person, getaway rigger, etc. Maybe not all of them for every job but you’ll feel it if one is missing over time.
Ways to mitigate this include:
Similar capabilities
Make it so everyone can mostly do a similar thing, which is the thing you need to do. In APOCALYPSE FRAME you can basically make any strike team work because they largely all fill the role of “smash face”, the big difference is how much offense they have, how much mobility they have, how much they can get away being exposed along the way, and specific utilities from specific Frame abilities. This isn’t a great solution for every game but for explicitly combat-based systems especially, give this some real consideration: at the end of the day, if the thing you really need to do is move the ball forward, let everyone be able to move the ball forward.
Role overlaps
Make it easy to fill multiple roles. In Valiant Horizon each class is written to have a major and minor focus between Attacker (extra Harm, breaking defenses, exploitation of positions and conditions), Defender (mitigation, control, and prevention of enemy action), and Support (buffs, healing, and giving allies extra actions). For example, the Berserker can do a lot of AOE Harm and has a fair number of abilities that move and attack (Attacker/Spread and Attacker/Exploit) but also has abilities that give penalties to enemies who don’t attack the Berserker (Defender/Provoke).
For less combat-ish situations like the heist example, challenges can be described in-system in such a way that they can't only be solved in one fashion. Maybe it'd be better to hack security so help can't be called, but maybe you can also just physically cut the cyber-phonelines to roughly accomplish the same thing. Focus on outcomes/results rather than means. (You can still make it narratively better to do one or the other - like maybe hacking can bring down autoturrets or reveal things to grab that cutting the lines doesn't - as long as it's not a hard barrier. It's good to make choices count.)
Watch for bottlenecks
Remove functional bottlenecks - areas where a particular function needs to exist - wherever possible. A big one for combat-focused games is often healing: if only certain classes have access to healing and damage is unavoidable to the extent that healing is expected, then there's a bottleneck that you need a healer. For this particular instance, you can introduce other ways to avoid that, like damage mitigation, the ability to hamper enemy attacks, spike offense to the degree that you can defeat enemies before they attack, etc. You can also give everyone a way to "fill in" on roles: damage isn't so one-sided towards attack-focused classes that other people can reasonably do it, non-defensive characters aren't so comparatively flimsy that you strictly need a tank to draw fire, everyone has an emergency ability to heal themselves, etc.
Tactical Quarterbacking
This is the meat of what I was getting into in part 1, and what got me thinking about it in the first place. As noted in my first post re: diceless designs, I think the "set" nature of being able to set up combos, etc. can cause this. A major way to combat it is to make situations less "solvable".
Uncertain Outcomes
Certainty is a major factor in this, so a major solution is to introduce uncertainty in a few ways. The first obvious move is to...introduce randomization again, of course!
Frankly I think a little randomization is fine, if not generally interesting! But I'd rather it be in the form of "how well did the thing you're doing work" rather than a pure binary "did it hit or not". This is the approach Total//Effect games are taking. (Basically fuck to-hit rolls as a base mechanic, they fucking suck. This has nothing to do with quarterbacking, but it's important to me personally so I'm including it.) Also for games where players have a ton of actions (aka mine, I do this a lot), randomization can slow things down.
Another thought re: uncertain outcomes is to have everyone figure out their actions separately, then reveal at the same time, but this is a pretty specialized kind of mechanic.
Uncertain Situations
Another idea is to just throw curveballs so players don't know exactly what to solve for. LUMEN has this built in with its "do something drastic every round as part of the GM Turn" idea: you're encouraged to constantly be changing the situation. But beyond that, just hiding information until something happens is a classic move. (Sometimes this creates quarterbacking in the way of contingency plans but like, after a certain point if everyone's that on board, have at.)
This comes with a caveat: as a designer, provide tools and templates and ideas for GMs to do this without constantly having to come up with shit on the fly. Otherwise, it can add more narrative requirements to a role that can already be very overwhelming!
Uncertain Motivations
Here's another thing: How well do you trust your quarterback? Are they calling plays that best suit the situation or ones that'll get them the hall of fame nod?
Games, mostly-co-op board games and video games, sometimes have a betrayer mechanic - thinking of the Battlestar Galactica board game where one player is a cylon so you can't really trust anyone to truly lead the way on ideas, but you can see this in video games too with SS13, Among Us, etc. The goal is to do the thing, but the goal is also to find whoever the betrayer is.
Now. I don't think you should do exactly that for a TTRPG! If everyone's always second guessing everything everyone else does because they're worried it'll fuck everyone over then it'll bog down everything HARD. (Though, if that's your bag then go wild, sounds like fun to me but I recognize I'm weird.) What you can do as a less extreme measure is introduce personal/secret motivations alongside group motivations, and to instill doubt as to motivations for opinions. Does a warrior's motivation suggesting the group try and take the demon lord on alone match his protestations about keeping civilians safe by not involving them or indicate that he's a gloryhound? Is that wizard reticent to attack a shady group because they're not doing anything wrong or because she needs something out of them? Basically, make it make sense to make your own call sometimes rather than rely on someone else. When you're not sure you're 100% on the same page as someone, you're less likely to accept their recommendations and more likely to do what you feel is best.
Uncertain Communication
This is one I'm reticent about because I don't usually like restricting table talk too-too much (see foreword point #2) but: in tense situations, make communication mechanically scarce. Enforce taking actions to communicate things of substance. Give players explicit mechanical abilities to ask for help, or create situations where there are comms blackouts, like when player characters are separated. (I don't recommend like, running two halves of a game as secret information because that shit's annoying as fuck over time, and the tension of watching half your party fuck it up for you is palpable.)
You can also make the details each character has uneven, or even just subjective - different characters will notice different details about a situation based on who they are, perfect information is a lie - but that can be a pretty tall ask unless it's very integrated into the system, and even then you can get weird situations where everyone's unclear about what kind of information their character knows vs what they know.
On a related side note...
Tangent Idea: The Quarterback Is A Gameplay Construct Now
Alright, hotshot. You think you got what it takes to run this operation? Congrats, you're now the other characters' handler. You don't have an in-action character of your own, you run overwatch from afar and communicate information as best you can. If they hit a communication dead zone, they're cut off and can't talk to anyone except anyone local, so better hope you gave applicable advice prior to that.
If it's a more local situation, you're now the squad leader. You've got one free-action suggestion per round - anything past that needs an action - but also anything intelligent you face knows to go for the guy barking orders first. Best of luck.
Reduce coordination complexity
So one major source of quarterbacking is coordination: you need to do X and they need to do Y so I can do Z, that sort of thing. If the first person doesn't get the memo and isn't on board for X then the whole plan could be up shit's creek.
In general, when there are mechanical combinations, add in fallbacks. Sure, X + Y -> Z is the best outcome, but maybe if you have either X or Y it's still better than nothing at all.
Reduce stakes out of character
So honestly, one of the big takeaways I have re: quarterbacking is that it's mostly when people think there's going to be a really important outcome from a situation: losing is too painful or winning is too crucial. Honestly though? Unless it's an especially brutal kind of game, not to spoil anything, but the good guys are gonna win eventually. And if it is that kind of game, generally the idea is to play to find out rather than ensure victory. If people start getting a little too intense about it, just remind them of the goal, whatever it may be. The benefit of TTRPGs is that it's way easier than a video game to make situations recover from "everything went sideways" because everyone involved has way more narrative control: if things do go badly in a "the good guys will definitely win" kind of game the players and GM can usually come up with a way to bounce back. Encourage people to allow things to go sideways.
Conclusions
Try out any and all of this as a dev/GM, but just be careful to make sure it's actually improving the game. In a lot of cases being too worried about it just slows things down.
I think about this stuff the normal amount.

could you do relationship hc for ghost? 😳
Tumblr media
i can! and yea same. warning maybe this wont be so fun. ghost!:
ghost can casually be friends w benefits with people. he handles it well. but when it gets deeper and emotions get involved ghost sort of panics and starts lashing out.
horribly jealous. horribly. hes very accusatory and prone to being vindictive So. he cheats. hes not secretive about it either, because he cheats and assumes you cheat too.
hes pretty flaky on dates? if he feels too nervous about it then he just wont show up. but thats not Always because of the relationship aspect sometimes hes just anxious about taking his mask off in public. he likes dark, scarcely populated places. movie theaters and late night walks. hes also much more comfortable just spending time together at home.
he's quick to call the relationship off and act like hes over it just bc he was never in his life taught any real problem solving in regards to relationships. but he'll also be texting you at the end of the week going "can i come over."
radio silence is really common. unless you work with him in his specific squad, when he works hes working and hes not going to message you. hes also using this as an excuse to give himself space when he needs it, taking an extra bit of time to finally respond again.
he picks fights just sort of naturally as well with how blunt he is. dating ghost is a lot of taking a step back to breathe and not responding to his childish actions in order to make it work. you give him like 5 years of an on and off relationship and he'll get his shit together. eventually.

So this is actually one part of a longer fic that I wanted to get done during April, for the reason that the Knight System is autistic and I don’t make the rules, but my time management is bad and the fic is not done. But I still want to post something, so I decided to post the first chunk now and then rest whenever it’s finished, and combine the two halves on AO3. I probably should’ve posted the sub-parts as I finished them but ah, well, hindsight 20/20 and all that.
(Also thanks to parhelics for suggesting Content for this! It was supremely helpful.)
CW for Marc Spector having internalized ableism and refusing to take care of himself, along with mentions of disordered eating. Also this is Ambiguously Post-Show, but there’s no real major recent spoilers. That’s in part 2.
i. hyperfocus
“Carries a lot of tension, doesn’t he?”
Layla was still getting used to that part. Not the switch in voices, in body languages, in almost everything, but the way he talked about it so casually. Steven was always more open about it than Marc. “What makes you say that?” she asked.
“Neck only hurts this bad when he’s been out for a while.” Steven grimaced as he tried to stretch out the muscles. “Jaw, too...ow.”
That did sound like Marc. Steven had looser shoulders (sometimes to the point of slouching). Looser...everything. Layla had always known how intense Marc could be, but it wasn’t until Steven came along that she realized how intense. He was energy under pressure. Steven...
Steven was that same energy being released slowly, mostly carefully. There was the odd flinch or wince or moment of jumpiness, but even the gestures she’d once found random had logic to them. He fiddled with the buttons on his coat’s cuffs as he read. It seemed to help him focus. “He doing all right?” Steven asked. “He doesn’t tell me much about...him personally.”
Funny, he doesn’t tell me much either. Layla bit her tongue. That was one of the boundaries they’d set up. Whatever was going on with her and Marc stayed between them. No dragging Steven into it “He’s had a lot on his plate,” Layla said. “He’s the kind of guy who forgets to eat when he’s got the scent.”
“Guess we do have something in common ‘sides the body.” Steven gestured towards his phone. “Why d’you think I’ve been setting off alarms all day? Ah, shit...” He quickly cancelled one of the alarms and got up, making a move for the bag of communal gas station snacks. “Learned my lesson after the first time I almost passed out.”
“Passed out...what were you doing?!”
“Oh, uhm.” Steven grinned sheepishly as he opened a bag of dried fruit. “Someone at work kept bugging me to read one of those conspiracy theory books about the pyramids. Spent a week debunking the bloody thing. Got deep into it, forgot to eat a few times. On the plus side, no one bothered me with that kind of thing after that.” He shrugged, ate a few more pieces of fruit. Then he suddenly got up and started fiddling with Marc’s phone. Not his; Marc’s.
“What are you...?”
“Helping both of us.” Steven finished whatever it was he was doing before putting it away and grabbing a bottle of water. “If he gets annoyed, you can blame me. What’s he going to do? Punch me in the face? Trust me, that’ll backfire on him.”
Layla almost checked the phone, but decided to leave it alone for now. She'd find out eventually.
Eventually ended up being a few hours. Marc came back when it became clear that Steven knew nothing about car repair, and Layla needed an extra set of hands. Marc threw himself into it as if fixing the car would solve all their other problems. It was an involved enough problem that even Layla almost forgot how late it was getting.
But Steven hadn't.
Marc's phone started buzzing. It only made his shoulders tense more. He barely pulled himself away long enough to check the phone and sighed heavily. "Great. Now he thinks he's funny."
"Who?"
Marc showed her the phone. There was an alarm going off, labeled with, "Eat something! :) -Steven"
Well, that explained earlier. "He's right, though. We're getting nowhere with this." Layla had to intercept him to stop him from going back to the car. "C'mon. You'll work better after a meal."
Marc tensed. It was only then that Layla noticed she'd rested her hand on his chest. Even though they were trying to work things out, they hadn’t quite reached that level of touch again. She cleared her throat and moved her hand away. "Relax your jaw while you're at it. Steven said it’s painful."
She caught a glimpse of Marc stretching out his jaw as she walked away, frowning as if he was only now noticing how stiff it was.
I guess you really can get used to anything.
.
ii. low spoons/executive dysfunction
In a lot of ways, Marc reminded her of a cat. Independent. Liked to do things himself, his own way. She’d found that endearing when they first got married. She’d spent just enough time around clingy guys to appreciate someone with initiative. That and she’d been more idealistic, a bit more inclined to see Marc swooping in to take over tasks—and usually doing a good job—as a bit romantic.
That was before it started feeling like blind stubbornness. Like he was shutting her out. There was a lot on his plate with being Khoshnu’s avatar, she knew. She wouldn’t be able to help with all of it, but some of it, maybe. If he’d just let her instead of burning the candle at both ends.
“Hey.”
Marc was sitting at the table, face in his hands, the exhausted tension in his shoulders worse than usual. Steven wasn’t going to be happy when he showed back up. “Are you okay?” Layla asked.
“Fine.”
That was definitely a lie. There were papers scattered on the table and she could see his stuff on the bed. Bag half unpacked. She went to put some of his things away, but...
“No, no, don’t do that, it’s fine. You’ve been driving us all day. Don’t...” He finally looked up. His eyes were bloodshot. “Please, just...don’t worry about it, let me do this.”
She wanted to push back. It wasn’t a problem, it would take five minutes for her, but he was running on empty. It wasn’t going to get done. He’d just feel worse if it didn’t.
But something in her just couldn’t do it. She was sick of fighting with him.
“...okay,” Layla said.
The bag didn’t get unpacked. She wasn’t sure he finished gong over the maps, either. It almost wasn’t a shock to her that Steven was the one making breakfast the next morning.
Of course, none of this had been easy for him, either. He’d gone from working at a museum gift shop to dealing with gods and finding out he shared a body with someone else. He’d been holding up okay, but Layla was still waiting for the other shoe to drop with him.
It didn’t. Not quite, anyway.
Even when he was sitting at the same table with the same pose, she couldn’t mistake the two of them. Where Marc was tense and still, Steven was in near-constant motion: knee jiggling, hands slowly rubbing his eyes. “You okay?” Layla asked.
“Uh.” Steven glanced up. “Gonna be honest. Hit a bit of a wall. Trying to figure out what I’m capable of doing before I’ve got to quit. Which...” He laughed. “...think that’s not helping, having to think about it. Funny, innit?” He laughed nervously. “Hell.”
Layla carefully sat near him. “Is there anything...I can do?” she asked carefully. She expected him to turn her down. He might not have been as bad as Marc, but Steven was the kind of guy who didn’t like inconveniencing people. She was so sure...
“Actually, uhm...if you want to take a stab at these, maybe I can...double-check it later? This is...” He nudged the photocopies towards her. “...the one that’s going to kill me first, I think.”
“Okay.” Layla carefully took the papers, stopping to squeeze his hand. “I’ve got it. What else is there?”
“Uhm.” He took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Can we get takeaway?”
“Yeah, we can do that.”
“Okay, I’m going to...” His lips moved like he was counting. “...shower? I’m going to shower.” He still hesitated when he stood, like he was afraid he’d forgotten something, before saying, “Right!” and leaving.
She was a little surprised it had been that easy.
When Steven came back, his restless energy seemed to have settled. He still seemed a bit too scatterbrained to really check at the papers she’d worked on, but he still looked at them, fingers tracing over the hieroglyphs, then her letters underneath. “You must’ve gotten a few penmanship awards in school, huh?” he said.
It was one of the stranger compliments she’d ever been given, but...still. She appreciated it.
.
iii. communication
Marc had gone quiet before, more than once. They’d spend ages on the road, working until they couldn’t keep their eyes open, and at some point he’d just stop talking. Not on purpose, not as far as she could tell. Speaking took energy he didn’t have.
Which wasn’t to say they didn’t talk. They’d figured out other ways he could communicate until his mind unstuck. He could respond to questions—yes or no was easiest, squeezing her shoulder or hand. Sometimes he could tap out short answers into her wrist in Morse code. Sometimes they didn’t even need that. Some things he could say without any kind of words. Hand on her elbow, forehead resting against her shoulder blade. I love you. I’m here.
He didn’t do that anymore.
The verbal silence still wasn’t on purpose. But the rest of it...what else was she supposed to think? There was no more hand in hers, no more taps or squeezes. He wouldn’t even look at her most of the time. He closed himself off until either his voice came back or Steven slipped out. And the latter was happening more and more lately.
Layla bit back her frustration. She tried to, anyway. Steven’s presence helped keep it suppressed, because she really wasn’t going to drag him into this. Wasn’t like there was anything he could do about it. And when he wasn’t being a deterrent, he made for a good distraction. He didn’t go quiet, not like Marc. He seemed to talk more when he was stressed, like steam coming out of a pressure valve. Sometimes he paced around; sometimes he’d sit next to her, his knee bumping against hers as he bounced his leg.
“Sorry, I’m rambling, aren’t I?” he said one evening. “I’ll shut up if you...”
“No, no, you don’t have to shut up. It’s okay.” Layla carefully took his hand. “It’s okay, really.”
Yes, the conversation was largely one-sided, but she didn’t care. Someone was talking to her. Acknowledging that she was there instead of shutting her out.
She felt guilty, turning to Steven for that instead of telling Marc what was wrong. But she didn’t see any other way, either. It was like her husband was a brick wall. An old rock in the middle of the desert.
How was she supposed to reach him if he didn’t want to be reached?

So, back a few months ago for Inktober, I did a Magnus-themed prompt list and one of the very early prompts was to create a -sona. I drew this, had fun, didn’t think much else of it at the time.
Separately, sometime over the genuinely unpleasant and not sleep conducive mess that the winter holidays tend to be, I realized that hanging out with favorite Magnus characters in my imagination as I was trying to turn my brain off and fall asleep was surprisingly effective. I mean, it makes sense: I wasn’t making up a story I wanted to remember, it wasn’t trying to solve a real world problem, it was just… mentally hanging out with comfort characters who I knew pretty well and felt safe and happy around.
Since getting sick this month, I’ve once again been having a bit of trouble falling asleep. (Not fair at all, because I also feel dead tired the vast majority of the time, also thanks to having been sick.) But I thought back to this little character, who is just simply me thrown into a fictional world, and my “hanging out with Magnus friends tactic,” and figured, why not invite this character into this little imaginary comfort world for reals and just let her hang out with my favorites?
It’s been far too much fun, and seems to be helping a bit with falling asleep 😂 So far I’ve established:
* Her name is Allie.
* She used to live with roommates in kind of a crappy basement apartment, but they moved out a while back. She works way too hard anyway and stays late at her job, so she figures the extra hours help cover the rent, and then she doesn’t have to worry about bothering them. Turns out the extra hours don’t quite, and she’s always working too hard because she needs the money but also because she doesn’t really look forward to going home and being alone.
* She genuinely loves her job. Still going back and forth on whether that involves organizing/ filing statements or whether she works in the library, or whether she just started in the library, but she dearly loves organizing information stored at the institute and has a pretty sharp memory for it. She also believes the supernatural stuff and has all kinds of theories about how it all connects (most of them are wrong but at least she guesses that something’s up.)
* She came on staff about the same time Gerry did or a bit before, and she knows Martin from his days of working in the library. She’s very good friends with both of them, but the friendships have completely different dynamics. She disliked Gertrude and didn’t trust her, but has been convinced all along that there was something shady about her death.
* She didn’t meet Gerry at the institute; she met Gerry at a used book store near the institute. She likes strange old books and was about to purchase a beautiful Leitner, not knowing what it was, and Gerry rather rudely spared her the trouble. She was angry at him but also thought he was an interesting person, and they got into a big loud argument that somehow turned into a friendship. She worries about him a lot because she doesn’t trust Gertrude and also doesn’t trust Gerry to take care of himself. She does enjoy catching up with him when he’s back in the office, though; they like a lot of the same music and tend to share new musical finds, and have gone to a couple of concerts.
* Martin has figured out that she’s a pretty good listener and doesn’t judge him for getting crushes on coworkers, so they often take lunch and tea breaks together while he talks her ears off about his current crush. She likes how much he trusts her and often encourages him to make the first move or be a little bolder. She also has introduced him to different artisanal tea varieties, some of which he’s liked and some of which he hasn’t. She’s still trying to figure out the pattern in his likes/ dislikes. But she thinks of him as warm and safe and enjoys his confidence.
To be potentially updated if anyone is interested 😂 I have zero intention of writing any of this down properly; goodness knows I have too many projects going already. Buuut I might make some more art eventually? And possibly update on interesting things going on with the character?

🦋 chart shape, dominants
your chart is a locomotive shape. this means that you're a very ambitious person, with a lot of energy. the moon has a big influence on you, and your life revolves around understanding your feelings and emotional growth. the empty part of your life is what you have to develop, hence your family, financial life and also your romantic life.
your dominant planet are mars, uranus and saturn. you may be a trendsetter among your peers, or you may even become pretty well-known in your field. you're probably very smart and witty, you know how to make your way through things, you have great problem-solving skills. you're creative, artistic and sensitive, yet you're also ambitious and goal-oriented, you're not afraid of fighting for what you believe. in group settings, you usually take on leadership roles; you are very mature and responsible, thus making it easy for you to lead a team.
your dominant element is fire. you have a warm heart, even though it may be covered by your confidence and independence. in fact, you always strive for the first place. people may be intimidated by your presence, as you're a serious competitor. thanks to this competitive nature of yours you may be very positive and optimistic, making you a good and supportive friend/partner.
your dominant sign is capricorn. you're hard-working and stubborn, once you have something in your mind no one can stop you. you strive to be the best at what you care about, especially in work. you're very polite, and this may even make you seem snob sometimes. actually, you're a very loyal person, who's also a great listener.
🌎 ascendant in capricorn, 23° / 3rd decan ruled by saturn and mercury
you're an affectionate person, yet your heavy capricorn influence may make you feel restricted to share your vitality with others. others' first impression of you is that you look like some sort of authority, someone who needs to be respected. even when you're joking, you still have this seriousness to your aura that is hard to go unnoticed. you care about your manners, and just your overall impression in general. you may take extra care of your clothes, your hair etc. you don't want to look disorganized, in fact you probably own an agenda or even just write your appointments somewhere. you have a cautious approach to the world, you're very responsible, especially when people you love are involved. you may have a very serious expression to you that could actually make you seem intimidating. generally speaking, you still have a serious look on your face that looks quite intimidating. you also look introverted, and you most probably are. you're very modest, and that's because you're secretly kind of insecure about your appearance. you always feel like you're not enough, and that you constantly have to improve yourself to be accepted. this gets better with time, though. physically, you're probably very attractive and don't realize it! especially with your scorpio midheaven. you may have an amazing bone structure with high cheekbones, a defined jawline and naturally straight, pleasant teeth. you may probably also have an amazing posture and walk, even though you may suffer from scoliosis or other bones diseases in your early years.
capricorn ascendant conjunct capricorn venus: you have the planet of beauty (venus) conjunct your appearance (ascendant). you're surely very attractive! even if you're not a conventional beauty, there's still a certain charm to you that can't get overlooked. you're very feminine and polite, especially with strangers. you care about the impression you make on others, even though you shouldn't worry that much, as it's generally good. you're probably very sociable, it doesn't matter whether you're introverted or not. you still have amazing social skills, and you also have a very charming voice. you literally draw people to you, I imagine it's not hard for you to make new friends and engage in conversations randomly. you also care a lot about the way you look, hence you probably have a skincare/workout routine, and you're fond of shopping and selfcare in general. you want to always look at your best; that's caused by the fact that you're secretly quite of insecure about your looks. you may have the tendency to think that the compliments you receive aren't honest, and people are just trying to be nice to you. another downside to this placement is that you may attract people's jealousy. even though this could be a self-esteem boost for someone, it may be hard for one to handle, in your case especially in relationships, maybe with your friends, but I'll talk more about this later.
capricorn ascendant conjunct capricorn mars: you easily come off as more assertive and arrogant than you actually are. this manifests both in your face and in your words. you could say things impulsively, and sometimes you're too blunt and hurt people's feelings. you don't do it on purpose, though, there's no malice behind your acts; it's just your natural way to express your opinions. on the other hand, you probably have a very strong charisma to you that makes you look very captivating and bold. people see you as a leader, and hence they could get intimidated by your presence. to cope with this placement, you can try controlling yourself and your words before speaking. I'm aware that it's a way to vent your anger, but you can find another way that doesn't hurt others.
capricorn ascendant square aries saturn: you may be shy and have self-esteem issues, especially during your early years. because of that, you may often appear as insecure to others, or even unreliable. you have a strong desire to be with someone and commit to them, you despise supertificial bonds, but at the same time you may find yourself being too shy to approach others, especially during your early years. you may not be the most confident person on earth, but as time goes by your grow more and more confident. this may apply more to the younger you, actually. you don't feel much comfortable around other people, and others can sense that; your insecurity is exposed to the world, and some may take advantage of that to hurt your feelings. you're afraid of being judged, whether it's for your appearance, or maybe because of your ideals or interests. hence, you end up becoming reserved. this is something that will be solved through growth and time; the older you get, the easier you'll be on yourself. also, thanks to this aspect, you're a responsible person with defined values. to cope with this placement, I'd suggest you to do what makes you feel the best. there are different ways to boost your self-esteem, so maybe you can work on that and then start expressing yourself freely; if you do it without the fear of being judged, you will shine even more.
☀️ sun in sagittarius, 19° / 2nd decan ruled by jupiter and mars
in life, you strive for freedom and independence. you are an extremely wise person, and you believe strongly in your beliefs. you rarely change your mind, but most of the time you’re an open-minded person. you love learning about anything, and you may also have a good memory. in fact, it’s common for you to be the one who explains things and possibly even leads a group, and this could unluckily make you seem as a know-it-all. you do take pride in your wisdom, indeed. your deep way of thinking is also where your desire for freedom comes from, as you wish to be able to expand yourself through travelling and new experiences. you may also be attracted to foreign things, such as foreign literature, fashion, art, music etc. it’s another way to travel and open your mind, without actually having to leave your house when you’re busy. when you get angry, you can actually get very rude and offensive, even towards authorities. you’re short-tempered, and you despise being told what to do. you’re also a good, loyal friend, and you’re the type to stand up for them and defend them during a fight. you’re very outgoing, especially with people you feel comfortable with, and you probably love talking. you’re able to put a smile on others’ face just by telling your stories, even though you never truly go in-depth. in fact, you have a shy side to you that makes you more secretive, regardless of your friendliness.
🌙 moon in taurus, 9° / 1st decan ruled by venus
the moon is exalted in taurus, so it's definitely a good placement! you're very peaceful, you try to avoid conflicts when you can. this placement makes you crave stability, whether it's financial, in love etc. you must be very stubborn, as taurus is a fixed sign. this placement, paired with your hard-working capricorn energy, makes you settle on making your ideas concrete, and it's very beneficial. it makes you capable of achieving any goals in your life. you're also very artsy, and you may fancy particular art styles. you have a good eye for aesthetics, and you care a lot about the looks of your house, body, clothes etc. you have excellent concentration, and that is another thing that helps you achieve your goals and make your ideas concrete. last but not least, you're amazingly patient, and that makes you a great friend. probably, they vent a lot of their worries to you, as you're also a great listener.
taurus moon square capricorn venus: there are contrasting feelings in your relationships with others; after all, your taurus moon wants to commit to someone and be loyal to them. on the other hand, your capricorn venus wants to be free. you don't want to feel tied to someone, you still need your independence. those two desires of yours probably contrast each other, stressing you out. you want a calm, almost boring relationship, but with this placement you can't seem to have one. your feelings and self-esteem may depend a lot on your relationships, not only with your lovers, but also with your friends. if someone isn't loyal to you, you immediately start blaming yourself. in your life you may lack intimacy, and while it may make you feel better at first, based on the rest of your chart you actually need someone on your side. you can't do everything on your own. you need to find someone that projects your ideals of love. if you need a free-spirit, go look for one. it may take you a while, but if you learn all the lessons you need to learn from your breakups, you'll be able to live a peaceful life with your spouse.
taurus moon square aquarius jupiter: you enjoy making different experiences and living your life to the fullest, making you also a risk-taker. you may lack self-control. with this trait you get bored easily, and you may have a reputation for being flaky. you tend to overindulge; you may spend too much money, or even develop eating disorders like binge-eating. at least, you're able to build your life again and have a fresh start, but you risk to get stuck in this cycle. you have the potential to master different talents, but you may struggle to develop them due to this placement. you're a procrastinator, and you find it hard to focus on more things at the same time. you may also attract people with different beliefs and ideas from you, causing you to fall out with them easily. there are also positive sides to this placement, though! you're probably naturally lucky, even though luck may not always be by your side. you have a nice sense of humor, making you more likeable.
🗣️ mercury in capricorn, 2° / 1st decan ruled by saturn
you can come off as cold by the way you speak. when you're speaking to someone you're not close to, you choose your words more wisely and patiently; with your friends, on the other hand, you take off your mask and you just act the way you feel to. you may also be the type to give dry answers, such as 'ok', 'alright', 'good' and so on. your tone is calm and placid, while your voice sounds quite youthful, but still with a note of steadiness. you're funny, but your humor is more sarcasm-based. you're not intimidated easily; even when someone tries to argue with you, you don't back up from it. you may dive deep into your mind to find the right answer you to your problem. even if it takes you some time, you manage to find a solution. a downside to this is that you may lack patience. mercury is also retrograde, so you may have trouble communicating your thoughts in a clear and understandable way. due to this, people may misunderstand your ideas and opinions and viceversa. you're more introspective, you're better at thinking than speaking, which may make you more of a listener.
❤️ venus in capricorn, 29° / 3rd decan ruled by saturn and mercury
you seem like the type of person who's not totally into the idea of love and relationships, especially in your early years. you find your individuality way more important, and you feel the need to establish your status in the world. yet, there's still a place in your heart that desires love, but it's quite hidden. maybe, you're actually afraid of falling in love; or perhaps, it's the opposite: you jump into relationships, even if they aren't actually your priority. it may be hard for you to fall for someone, but once you do, you're totally invested in them. you're quite of a traditionalist when it comes to love; you may the type that prefers being courted, rather than court yourself. you're also quite into clichés, and you're looking for a polite and ambitious partner. someone who has a stable job, and is also wealthy. basically, someone that looks (and possibly is) rich and noble. you may also have the tendency to date people that are older than you, and possibly also soulmates from your past lives. in fact, you attract many karmic partners that are here to teach you lessons. your relationships may be quite painful, or at least they're so intense that they are hard to forget. with this placement, it's also recommended to get married after your saturn return, hence after your 28-29 years old, to avoid any kind of challenges.
capricorn venus conjunct capricorn mars: you are very serious when it comes to love. you seek intense, long-lasting relationships, filled with both romance and passion. ironically, you tend to attract people that are the opposite, who are only looking for fun and casual romance. that could afflict your self-worth significantly, as you feel unlucky in love. this is also another placement that indicates that one of your parents, probably your father, or still anyone of the opposite sex probably influenced your approach to romance and sex. there are different scenarios I have in mind, but I'll talk about it later in the family life section.
capricorn venus conjunct capricorn neptune: this placement balances your strict, detached capricorn venus of materialistic earth energy, giving you a place in your heart for romance. you probably dream of a love like those you hear about in fairytales; you're not only looking for a partner, you literally want a princess/prince, who's willing to give their all to you. you find yourself daydreaming often about love, and it may also be your source of inspiration for creativity and art in general. probably, you may idealize people too much; that is, you may create a version of others that only exists in your head. hence, once you get to know someone better, they turn out to be the exact opposite of what you thought. this causes you to be sort of naive when it comes to relationships, so pay extra attention to this problem now that you're aware of it.
☄️ mars in capricorn, 24° / 3rd decan ruled by saturn and mercury
you're a serious competitor, as your mind is very strategic. your ambition makes you want to be the best wherever you are, and you may actually overwork yourself to achieve your goals. establishing your status is important for you. you may not be the type to act instantly, you prefer taking your time to follow a plan. in fact, you probably write down what you have to do in an agenda, or even in your phone's notes app. you have this strong sense of duty, as you feel 100% responsible of your fate. you're sure that, if you don't work hard, you don't deserve success and recognition. in fact, you don't take orders from others, you are your own boss. you could have materialistic tendencies, as wealth is what motivates you the most to work or just take action in general. you may often experience burnouts, as capricorn, especially in mars, brings intense workaholic tendencies.
🏡 houses
your 1st house is in capricorn. neptune, venus, jupiter, mars and uranus are also sitting there. with your first house in capricorn, you care a lot about your status and about your goals. you always give the best of yourself, and you want to be acknowledged and praised for your achievements. it helps boosting your self-esteem, even though you may have the tendency to think that the compliments you receive aren’t honest. capricorn is ruled by saturn, the planet of karma, therefore you most likely need to work hard to get what you desire. you don't receive anything for granted, you could even feel unlucky in a certain sense as you have quite a bit of undealt karma to you, but for sure your hard work (which you certainly don't lack) will pay off. you’re very electric and noticeable, you probably appear as someone quite edgy too. it’s hard for you to blend into society, and hence you may end up not having many close friends, especially during your early years. in fact, you may find yourself befriending people with your same interests, it’s very important for you. you may have frequent mood swings, and you could get nervous quite easily. due to neptune in this house, you appear as a very genuine and honest person. you have a reassuring aura about you, which could attract people to you. in fact, you seem and sound like a healer, hence broken people may find comfort in you. you’re an hopeless romantic, and this may make you look sort of naive, almost childlike. you feel the need to revolution the world, there’s an hidden rebel in you that needs change and justice. yet, you struggle to take action. it’s like your assertiveness is stuck deep inside of you, and you can’t take it out. hence, you cope with this through escapism; you may oversleep, overwork, drink, daydream, do drugs… anything that allows your mind to travel away from your sense of justice.
your 2nd house is in pisces. your relationship with money may not be totally stable; you may get distracted easily, and you could lose your money around. you could be quite messy, overall, or in general, this is usually a placement that indicates sudden money loss. this placement also confirms that your self-esteem isn’t stable either; you could be quite insecure, and you may idealize a lot the way you look. for example, you could think that you have an ugly nose when it’s actually the opposite. same goes for your belongings; you may think that you have saved loads of money, you spend them, and then you realize you didn’t really have much.
your 3rd house is in aries. saturn and the moon are also sitting in this house. when you communicate, you take a lot of pride in your opinions. you hate admitting that you’re wrong, especially since you’re a perfectionist. you could be quite impulsive, and you may speak with a naturally loud tone of voice. you’re extremely good at coming up with plans easily, even though you may have trouble sticking to them, as your fiery nature gets easily bored. you are very artistic and creative! you’re able to convey different emotions through your speech, hence you could do well as an actress/voice actress. you could also be good at drawing, or at least you have great potential to be a nice artist, as your emotions and creativity are directly connected to your intellect and words. hence, you could also be a writer, especially a poet. saturn here may bring you some challenges in the way you think and/or speech; you may have adhd, for instance, making it hard for you to relate to others. you may also have problems with your voice or with the way you formulate speech. in the worst case, this placement can make your relationship with your siblings turbulent; abortion is also possible.
your 4th house is in taurus. your childhood probably wasn’t turbulent, unless for those topics I talked about in the sun section. it was mosty quite peaceful, and you probably were able to express your creativity. maybe, your parents were a bit strict or over-protective, possibly materialistic too. the ruler of the 4th house, venus, is in the 1st house: you are probably a very family-oriented person. even if you don't plan to have a family in the future, you value your small community regardless of blood. you can actually be quite selfless sometimes, as you would do anything for the few people you trust and care about.
your 5th house is in gemini. you feel able to express yourself and your creativity through communication and media. probably, when you were a child you used to love puzzles. you have tons of hobbies, and they are all quite different from each other. they have the goal to stimulate your mind in some way, so for example if you read a book, it has to be about something interesting for you, that allows you to open your mind and also that teaches you something. if you don’t dedicate some time in your daily routine to nurturing your hobbies, or even just watching a tv show or hanging out with your friends, you don’t function correctly. because of that, I’d suggest you to pursue a career that involves your passions. so for example, if you like taking pictures you could become a photographer.
your 6th house is in gemini. in your daily routine, especially at work, you have to communicate a lot. you come in contact with lots of people, or maybe you write stuff like blogs or books. generally, you have a very hectic schedule, as you have different hobbies and appointments that you can’t abandon. this placement indicates that you may be prone to overwork yourself, as you put a lot energy in your job. your ideal career has to include something that allows you to express your personal taste, ideas and interests. in this way, it won’t feel too heavy to you, and you’ll find pleasure in working. you want to have everything under control, you can't bear not being organized. you most probably write down your appointments and stuff on an agenda, or perhaps even in the notes app of your phone. you're extremely precise, you want everything to be perfect. you probably care a lot about your appearance; you most likely have a skincare routine, workout... just anything that makes you feel healthy. you love taking care of yourself, especially of your hygiene. you also put a lot of effort in your outfits, you fear not being at your best state. you're very smart and insightful, and you strive for perfection; you want to prove your power to yourself, as it helps you boosting your self-esteem. in fact, it depends a lot on your achievements; if you don't meet your expectations, you start going through a hard time of insecurity and struggles.
your 7th house is in cancer. in marriage, you’re looking for an affectionate and caring partner who’s willing to nurture you. you’re also the type to like younger people to nurture by yourself, you want to be the one in charge, the leader, even when it comes to relationships. you’re looking for someone you feel at home with, someone that is worth calling ‘family’. you need to feel emotionally secure with your future spouse, almost a soulmate-like relationship. in addition, I assume that you also want to feel financially secure, and you wouldn’t mind being spoiled with gifts and just affection in general. this placement makes you very patient with other people, you could be the type to give other possibilities to others for example. you always try to be nice and gentle with your words, you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, even though you may unconsciously fail at this.
your 8th house is in virgo. you use a practical approach when it comes to intimacy, you may struggle to let go around others, especially with your pluto energy in the 11th house that gives you major trust issues. you’re extremely secretive, you hardly ever talk about yourself, and you may even despise being too exposed. you’d rather stay by yourself, in fact you have a very mysterious vibe to your aura. also, with virgo in the 8th house, you may feel so tied to a schedule, to a plan, that you lack flexibility. you're too logical, even though deep down you have this intuition that you can't fully express. on the other hand, while this makes it hard for you to get closer to your spiritual, higher self, you're extra good at handling situations here on the earth. for example, you may handle money very well if you're well-organized. transformation in your life happens when you're able to stimulate your logical mind to earn awareness of your problems. to make it simple, you may often not realize your mistakes yourself, others have to let you notice, but thanks to your heavy mercurian energy in your chart you're able to solve your problems by your own. you just lack a more intuitive side.
your 9th house is in libra. your beliefs and life philosophies were shaped by the outside world. that doesn’t mean you’re basic; you just don’t look enough in yourself, you prefer taking inspiration from others. e.g, if you see everyone wearing pink, then you start wearing pink too. there’s nothing wrong with that of course, especially if it’s about shallow matters, not like politics for example. yet, if you don’t, try to find out your sincere opinion in yourself. in fact, when you realize that you don’t feel attached to a certain topic or opinion, you just leave it behind and seek other truth. you hate being told what to do, you want to be free in the decisions you make. you may find yourself more at ease with foreigners, not with people from your birth country, perhaps because you prefer their culture / ideals.
your 10th house is in scorpio. pluto sitting here reinforces this scorpio energy. you may have a reputation for looking mysterious, as you’re probably not very sociable. you’re extremely motivated to achieve your goals, even though you may feel lost and confused due to your plutonian energy. you’ll pursue a career that involves looking for the truth, hence you may be a detective, a scientist, a poet etc. overall, once you find your true vocation, you’ll have no problems working, even though it may take you a while to find the right job for you due to your midheaven being in scorpio.
your 11th house is in sagittarius. the sun is also sitting in this house. your friends may be very open-minded, and you might have met them in school. they could also come from a different cultural background, or maybe they’re directly from abroad. at first, you struggled to make friends, as you were very secretive. with time, you’re learning to trust people and to transform and grow up through them. even though you may face some insecurities, you’re typically a strong-minded person. you strive for independence, as you focus your existence on your witty intellect. you have the ability to achieve great things, as your mind is literally revolutionary, even though you may struggle to make those projects concrete. a downside to this placement is that you may not give enough importance to your words; you’re brutally honest, and you may often hurt someone with your thoughts. even though you may appreciate it, as you don’t like it when people aren’t straight-forward, you probably don’t realize the effect your words can have on others. you’re also quite stubborn, and you take particular pride about your ideals. you may feel offended when people disagree with you. or maybe, you don’t even say your opinions, because you could be aware of the weight of your words and you don’t want to hurt others, or you’re afraid of being judged. people may define you as cold, but you’re really not. you just struggle to look sweet like other signs, and your heavy scorpio energy doesn’t help either.
your 12th house is in sagittarius. mercury is also sitting in this house. you're particularly interested in religion and higher beliefs, hence meditation would be effective for you. yet, you need to get enough sleep, or you could not be able to fully embrace the spirituality of this placement. you may also be able to have prophetic dreams, or at least they have a strong moral beyond them. possibly, you could make lots of good dreams, you hardly ever have nightmares. perhaps, your dreams could bring you luck; for instance, you may dream about the winning numbers of the lottery, or maybe they may warn you about certain people or events in your life that could harm, you are strongly connected to your higher self. you probably lose yourself in your own thoughts very often, starting daydreaming instead of doing what you have to do. you’re very creative and artistic, and you’re also able to fully convey your emotions in your words, even though it may be perceived as confusing sometimes. that’s because not everyone is as empathetic as you are. on the other hand, you may have the tendency to lie, or just being confusing in any way. you may not always express what you want crystal clear, as you want to able to modify the story just in case you encounter some hardships. also, you never truly express your feelings, probably out of fear.
❤️ love life, soulmates
in love you attract cancer, taurus, leo, virgo, gemini and scorpio. your future spouse will most probably have cancer, aquarius and scorpio placements, hence they’ll be very hard-working, intelligent and witty, but also very sensitive and a bit moody. it may be love at first sight, and you may find them very attractive. you could meet them in a crowded place, hence at a party, at a concert, at the mall, etc. or also at an event of any kind. your children will be heavy in virgo, pisces, sagittarius and gemini placements, hence they’ll be very smart and slightly arrogant too, they'll probably love being knowledgeable and they will like studying or researching. yet, they could be a bit too stubborn and sometimes materialistic.
👶🏻 family life
your mother was a caring person, even though she could’ve been a bit too protective and/or materialistic. she was also quite impulsive, and she probably hurt people easily even if she didn't mean to, as she was very straightforward. she’s probably a taurus or a libra, possibly even a scorpio, sagittarius or capricorn, or she has at least some placements in those signs. your father is a bit more chill than your mother, but he may get jealous easily. or maybe, it was your mother who did your father’s 'role’. hence, she was the dominant figure in your family. he’s probably a scorpio or any other water sign. if you have siblings, they’re probably aries or scorpio. you might fight a lot for control, especially during childhood. you’re also quite possessive of your things, but overall you also have a deep bond. even though you may argue quite a bit, you still have affection for each other.
📊 career
you could do well at a variety of jobs to be honest! with your gemini in the 6th house you could actually work in different fields before sticking to one career, hence you’re pretty experienced. I certainly see you being successful in your career, you will most likely work alone and you'll most likely be a boss. you're very hard-working, so I can see you having your own business for example. otherwise, you may also do well in an aesthetic field, you probably have great creative talent. you may be an artist, a creative director, a screenwriter, a writer, a singer, a musician... or even more practical jobs like lawyer, judge, possibly also a therapist or psychologist. in particular, I can see you doing well in a job where you get to interact with people; you would make a great nurse, for example. you may also work in a field related to fashion and the arts in general. my advice is to pick the career that makes you feel more emotionally fulfilled, as your success is highly influenced by how you feel. if you're not satisfied with your job, you're automatically going to underwork and feel stressed.
🧥 fashion sense, style analysis
your style may be quite androgynous, yet still very classy. even if you’re wearing a simple sweatshirt, you make sure that it’s all neat and high quality above all. you could fancy wearing basic, ageless pieces, such as blazers, jeans, shirts etc. you mostly wear monochrome shades, such as black, white, beige, grey etc., but you still make them look effortlessly trendy. you could also be into retro trends, especially 20s/60s fashion or even 70s or 80s.
👁️ past life, life purpose
during your past life, you probably didn’t have as many challenges as in this life. you most likely used to be very independent and stable; perhaps, you were rich, hence you didn’t really need to rely on others to survive. in this lifetime, you need to put your independency aside, you need to trust people and develop strong bonds with them. your path to luck and abundance may be long and steep, but you may achieve great personal success in this lifetime thanks to your relationships with others. you just need to work on your self-esteem and have stable finances without being too materialistic, you shouldn’t over-indulge. money is important, but you probably won't struggle with that in this lifetime, so focus on feeling comfortable with others. you may be meant to marry someone rich, or perhaps you're going to get an inheritance.
🤔 major transits analysis / april 24
with pluto transiting your packed 1st house, you may be undergoing major changes in your life these last few years. you could be experiencing sudden loss or traumas, you may lose or cut off people from your life to make space for others. you could also experience significant changes in your physical appearance. even though it sounds scary, pluto is the planet of transformation. changes that occur during this span of time, are probably dor the best.

Never Skip Breakfast
They say to have breakfast like a king, and it's true. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A good breakfast sets the tone for the day by managing blood sugar levels and metabolism. You can have cereals, eggs, and milk for breakfast.
Burn more Calories than you Eat
Since your goal is to lose weight in 10 days, try to cut down on 500 calories from your diet and burn 500 calories through exercise each day. According to experts, women should have around 1200 calories a day, while men should have around 1800.
Exercise for at least an Hour
Start with 30 minutes and work your way up to an hour of exercise each day. You can even do simple things like climbing stairs. Include squats, lunges, and crunches in your workout routine. Yoga is also great for weight loss and management.
Limit your Tea/Coffee Consumption
Replace your regular tea and coffee with green tea. Drinking two cups of green tea not only boosts metabolism but also keeps you feeling refreshed. If not, limit yourself to no more than two cups of tea or coffee a day.
Prioritize Sleep
Make it a habit to sleep for at least eight hours every night. There are techniques to help you fall asleep quickly. With enough sleep, your body gets the rest it needs.
Cut Down on refined Carbs
Refined carbs like white bread, pasta, and white rice are high in calories and low in fiber. Carbs are important for energy and nutrients, but too many refined carbs can lead to weight gain. Avoiding them can help with weight management.
Snack wisely
Many snacks are high in calories but not very nutritious. Refined grains like chips, crackers, and sugary drinks can contribute to weight gain. Opt for snacks under 300 calories and choose options with fiber and protein to keep you full. Look for low added sugar and sodium options, if possible. Apart from these, small lifestyle changes can boost your weight loss journey. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, avoid sugary drinks, don't sleep right after eating, take a short walk after meals, and opt for steamed and baked foods over fried ones.
While you follow these steps, remember not to starve yourself. Have smaller meals regularly, and healthy snacking is okay. Occasionally indulging in sweets or junk food is fine, just watch the portion size.
Lastly, healthy weight loss takes time, but making these small changes can certainly help you lose those extra pounds in 10 days.

DIY vs Pros: What to Do When It Comes to Home Fixes
As homeowners, you will inevitably have to repair and fix your homes. When this happens, you are frequently confronted with the problem of whether or not to do the work ourselves or to contract it out to a professional. Some adjustments require the knowledge and abilities of an expert, even though do-it-yourself projects can be enjoyable and save money. Making the right decision will help you stay out of debt, save money, and reduce stress. You have two choices when doing repairs around the house: do it yourself or hire a professional. This post will discuss the six most important considerations for each option. At this conclusion, you will be better ready to make an informed selection tailored to your requirements and the conditions you face.
The Difficulty Of The Task
The complexity of the required house repairs is one of the first factors to consider. Changing a lightbulb and cleaning out a drain are two jobs best suited for do-it-yourself projects. Installing a ceiling fan is another task that is perfect for do-it-yourself projects. However, more sophisticated tasks, like rewiring the electrical system or fixing the roof, demand specialist abilities that can only be learned through professional training. These talents are required to complete the tasks successfully.
The experience and training that professional plumbers have give them the ability to solve various plumbing issues. If you are looking for Charlotte plumbing services or one in your area, make sure you choose someone who has undergone thorough training and is equipped with the essential skills to evaluate problems and propose solutions that are successful accurately. Whether it's a clogged drain, a leaky pipe, or a broken water heater, skilled plumbers can resolve any plumbing problem with the accuracy and efficiency required.
Your Schedule And The Options You Have
Your time and availability are important factors to consider if you must choose between doing something yourself and hiring professionals to accomplish it. If you have a lot of free time, a patient disposition, and a flexible schedule, you can complete several do-it-yourself projects successfully. Hiring a professional, however, can help you save time you would otherwise spend and ensure that the task is completed promptly if you have limited time or the project requires immediate attention. This is because the professional can help you save time you would otherwise waste doing the task yourself.
Restrictions Placed On The Budget
When it comes to making decisions, the budget is a very crucial consideration to take into account. DIY initiatives typically result in labor cost savings. Still, if the individual conducting the job needs access to the necessary tools and materials, the project could be cheaper than it would have been otherwise. On the other hand, hiring professionals may give the impression of being more expensive initially. However, it guarantees the job is completed correctly, lowering the possibility of subsequent problems and extra expenses.
Factors Relating To Safety And Danger
Home modifications might threaten one's safety. mainly if they involve dealing with electrical, plumbing, or structural issues. Professionals have received significant training to manage risks successfully and are supplied with the proper protective gear. If you do not have the required experience or are unaware of the potential dangers, it is best to hand off the task to a professional with that experience.
Quality And Long-Term Results
Completing a do-it-yourself project can be satisfying, but the level of work produced may only sometimes be on par with that of a trained expert. The results won't be as positive in the long run. When a solution requires precision and knowledge, using specialists guarantees that you will achieve the greatest possible results and that those results will last as long as is practically possible. In addition, guarantees are usually provided for the work done by specialists, giving you an additional sense of security.
Important Learning Experiences
The ability to get valuable life experiences and a sense of accomplishment can be gained by completing do-it-yourself projects. On the other hand, if getting the task done quickly and efficiently is your top priority, the best choice you can make is to deal with a professional who specializes in the field. It is vital to evaluate the significance of obtaining new abilities in light of the urgent nature of the problem to arrive at a judgment founded on sound reasoning.
Conclusion
When it comes to fixing things around the house, whether you should do it yourself or hire a professional relies on several considerations, including the degree of difficulty, the amount of time available, the cost, the level of safety and quality, and your personal preferences. Careful consideration of these aspects will lead you to the most suitable choice to deal with your specific challenges. Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution and that certain improvements may require the assistance of a professional, while others can be pleasurable tasks that you complete on your own. Always put safety and quality first in all you do so that your house can always be a relaxing and well-maintained place to be.

Re-Reading Cryptonomicon
Last year I had a few posts I was working on around my eighth Cryptonomicon re-read that never really came together; they’ve been sitting in my drafts gathering dust for quick a while now. At the time I had this strange belief that a weekly post on what I’d been reading was at all a feasible thing to take on; you can find the first entry in that supposed habit here. But anyways, Cryptonomicon. My thoughts on this book, and Neal Stephenson as a whole, are complex. On the one hand, there’s aspects of his books and characters that evoke a particular kind of male nerd perspective that I find quite grating. Being a male nerd myself, I’ve met quite a few people who think and act this way and they’re often, in a quite earnest way, awful to be around. Unconscious misogyny, unexamined bias… the whole nine yards with a strong dose of intellectual superiority thrown in to boot. But at the same time, he’s an incredible writer. Enormous amounts of research, fantastic turns of phrase, and a good amount of humor thrown in. I’ve bounced off a few of his more cerebral books (Anathem comes to mind and Seveneves wasn’t a whole lot better for me) but Snow Crash, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon are some of my favorite books. And there’s echoes of myself that I can see in his characters, particularly the ‘smart but detached from reality’ sort. Sometimes Stephenson will say something like this and I could swear he was talking about me: “… but Waterhouse’s conversation doesn’t go anywhere in particular. He speaks, not as a way of telling you a bunch of stuff he’s already figured out, but as a way of making up a bunch of new shit as he goes along. And he always seems to be hoping that you’ll join in.” (Cryptonomicon) Or: “An idea springs out of his forehead fully formed, with no warning. This is how all the best ideas arrive. Ideas that he patiently cultivates from tiny seeds always fail to germinate or else grow up into monstrosities. Good ideas are just there all of a sudden, like angels in the Bible. You cannot ignore them just because they are ridiculous.” (Cryptonomicon) Or: “His feeling of disappointment that accompanies this action has nothing to do with the contents of the safe. He is disappointed because he has solved the problem, and has gone back to the baseline state of boredom and low-level irritation that always comes over him when he’s not doing something that inherently needs to be done, like picking a lock or breaking a code.” (Cryptonomicon) That sense of recognition in these characters is probably a big part of why I keep coming back, and why I’ve read Cryptonomicon eight times. It doesn’t hurt that Stephenson is very aware of the aforementioned male nerd tendencies and tends to call them out actively in his own characters, reducing that pain a fair bit. This time around I also took advantage of some extras in my eBook copy and read the entirety of Neal Stephenson’s 1996 article “Mother Earth Mother Board” about the laying of the then-longest wire on Earth. Thankfully it has not succumbed to link rot. It’s a monster of an article, clocking in at over 40K words (essentially the length of a short novel) and it’s a fascinating insight into everything from the history of submarine cable-laying to the technology involved and the political battles at play. It’s the kind of thing I’ll probably need to read a few times before I fully grasp everything it contains, which is fairly typical of the things Neal Stephenson writes. Anyways, now that I’ve got this out in the world I can finally clear out that drafts folder. A good feeling all around.
