to be frank with you, this is the most bull thing I've ever read in my entire life.
#( 𝐈 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐈 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐝 ┊ out of character )#( tw: vent )#( PERSONALS DO NOT INTERACT. )#( would jude be the coldest of mothers? absolutely the woman has never known a tender touch and she parallels asha in many ways -#( - and her no 1 priority is elfhame but she would still move heaven and earth for her child like she does with oak. she cares#( and she loves. will it take a good while to warm up to the idea of a child and the child itself? yes. but it will not take from her love#( and until jude figures out her existential crisis the child will be absolutely ADORED by cardan. he will be the best dad#( hell he won't sleep until his baby is sleeping and even then he will stay up because “what if it needs something and i won't know?”#( he would give his heart and soul to his child to the point where the worst quality it will grow to have is to be absolutely SPOILED#( i mean the child will have some serious mummy issues but not to the point of “omg what will the world have to deal with” because#( cardan will be there to fill jude's absence and constantly tell the kid . like come on cardan came from a heavily neglected family do you#( oak is the way he is because he was raised by madoc who is a redcap and bloodthirsty & because he KNOWS his mother was murdered#( by his father because of him. it screwed him up. no amount of love by both jude and cardan can fix that so he shouldn't be compared#( also when they realised the closest thing they have to a son got kidnapped they “raised hell and earth to get him back” as per the synops#( so you don't get to tell me jurdan are awful parents. awful si the very last thing they'll be#( it's true not every couple needs to have a kid. but don't blame it to the parents because you as a reader hate the idea of it. grow up.

It’s just… it is everything that Cardan thought Jude would notice his “SO OBVIOUS” exile riddle and thinks Jude to not hesitate to come back. Beside his certainty of her cleverness to piece the riddle together, he believed he was that clear about his feelings toward her; he had thought she absolutely ought to know how he feels for her.
Like oh buddy. BUDDY. Your wife had thought of the answer to your little riddle like you thought she would. But guess what? She has detrimental TRUST ISSUES. (Like… Ur super mean and hot, I can’t blame her.) Anyway.. it’s SUPER adorable of him to so wholeheartedly believe she wouldn’t question his trust. It reveals so much about his pov of thier relationship.
Jude thought Cardan’s (silly) trick was a (vile) trick, when it was simply a: “Im trying to impress/pay you back in kind with our romantic metaphorical sparring and eventually get you out of political drama for a bit,” trick.
I’m fucking laughing wow these delusional ass children I fucking love them.
#IM JUST NOW REALIZING I SPELT THEIR WRONG AND IM SO EMBARRASSED#at least it was the right their😭😭#THEYRE SO REAL LMFAOOOOOO#like they both were so hot ofc they constantly questioned the validity of each others feelings#if the last part didn’t make sense I’ll explain#she knew he had tricked her into exile and when Jude was like ‘can I pardon myself?’ she thought it was another trick to humiliate her#like girl it was to do THE OPPOSITE of humiliation#HE WAS SENDING YOU TO SAFETY UNTIL YOU COULD COME BACK AND FLAUNT UR NEW POSITION#but basically it revealed that he loved like Jude loves#that they have the same heart#(he’s not like the reg folk. he grew up around so many mortals as she did the folk)#but he’s a faerie so he doesn’t take caution to being unpredictable#Jude even knew: the folk could be humanlike but they (the folk) inevitably would do something to remind her that they STILL ARE folk#though she had too easily assumed that the folk acting like the folk meant betrayal#he thought the whole marriage thing had meant she fully trusted him#because he knew how hard it would be for her to give up her power over him#and he thought because that she had given up her ability to command him(comma) that she couldn’t doubt trusting him any longer#queen of nothing#the cruel prince#the wicked king#Jude Duarte#jurdan#cardan greenbriar#tfota#I’ve known them since I was 13 they’re much older in my stubborn pov#also me using the semi colon as if I’m sure that it’s proper grammar LMAOOOOO#confidence is key

One thing I’m salty af about is that despite Oak saying the Folk adore Cardan and are terrified of Jude and Oriana saying that his sister cultivates both love and fear, the adoring part and the positive feelings weren’t really shown.
Save for Oak himself, all the other characters that mention them don’t seem to take them particularly seriously, they are always varying degrees of disdainful and condescending. Queen Annet referred to Jude as “that sister of yours” as if she was talking about some peasant instead of the High Queen. Cardan is being called a coward left and right either outright or in roundabout ways and when he told these faeries to leave when the ordeal with Garrett happened a few blissfully ignored the king’s order. First thing Madoc says to Oak as soon as his daughter the queen™️ unbanishes him? “If you had a powerful queen, it would be more possible to support you against the current occupants of the thrones. Let’s start scheming, just for kicks ~rubs hands conspiratorially~”. Unpopular opinion I guess, but I wish he stayed fucking exiled.
Like, outside the royal family and the Court of Shadows, only three characters seem to respect and acknowledge them in a positive light: Lord Roiben, Lord Severin and Grima Mog. And despite knowing better, I’m still pissed at how many Folk are assholes like that. It would be nice to see someone saying “yeah, they’re good rulers, they made improvements, this thing is better than it was when Eldred was king” for a change.
But I’m glad that at least when the fae are dicks to their faces, Jude and Cardan put them in their places with intimidation and clever phrasings. They are menacing, after all, but way too many people are still taking liberties as if they aren’t that important. Also, I took the “mortal concubine” personally and am glad that Valen dude was found hanged lmaooo.

Finished The Prisoner's Throne and these are my thoughts! (Spoilers)
I like how sure Oak is about his love for Wren, it is sweet!
Wren murdering the guard in cold blood who went behind her back and tortured Oak oooooooOO
I wish they did more with the bridle but I suppose HB didn't want Wren to do smthg that may have been unforgivable
Oak's betrothal plan to Wren was very smart in my opinion, I didn't know how he was planning to prevent the war from starting and was caught off guard by the engagement announcement and I love being surprised! It reminded me of Cardan and Jude's arrangement in TWK but was different in its own right like Oak clearly would have happily married her without all the drama too.
I laughed out loud when Cardan turned the Ghost into a tree like A TREE?? Out of all the things I expected to happen in this book, this would have NEVER occurred to me. How does HB think of these things
When Wren hatched from a chrysalis and was reborn with wings at the end??????? That was also VERYYY unique and random. I was like wtf just happened but I vibe with it??
Jude and Cardan were sooooo adorable in this book, their moments were chef's kiss
Like when Cardan answered Jude's question and ignored Taryn completely, he has his priorities straight
OMG AND WE GOT CLOSURE ON VALERIAN'S CURSE ON JUDE. I thought that part was super cool and protective Cardan was>>>
I did feel sorry for Taryn when the Ghost died, like I wasn't sad when he died but I do feel bad for her
Did anyone else think Cardan was going to tell Oak that him and Jude are going on a 'business trip' to make a child and was on the edge of their seat only for him to say they are attending Nicasia's courting trials? I really thought
I already guessed the next book would be about Nicasia but I was realllllly hoping it would be about Jude and Cardan's kid(s) instead cuz like idgaf about Nicasia
I adored Oak defending Wren to his mother
OMG TIERNAN AND HYACINTH WERE ADORABLEEEE. When they reunited and Tiernan dejectedly said Hyacinth hated everyone including him but Hyacinth immediately said 'not you' I dIED. And their push and pull was so cuteee
Wren closing her eyes and accepting her death by Oak’s hands was so sad ngl but luckily he put two and two together in time
Overall, I loved all the callbacks to the original Cruel Prince characters and storylines. I think I liked the plot of the Stolen Heir a bit better but this book was more fast paced and had a lot more drama due to Oak's family being there which I adored. LOVED ITT
Jude completely ate every second she was in the book like that is my girl right there, I love her so much

Holly Black “not knowing” how to write adult Cardan has me in a vortex of thoughts. This can mean so many things… I think I’m taking it to mean that he’s very much changed from who he was when we first met him. He was living under the weight of a prophecy, ignored by his entire family (except Balekin who only gave him pain as attention), desperate for love, and didn’t have much of a purpose.
By the end of QON, all of that has changed. Suddenly, he has purpose. He enjoys being king. He has profound love and understanding. He has true friends, who see his value as an individual and not just as a royal. Similarly, aside from Asha, every family member at whose hands he suffered horrible abuses is gone. He has agency and power in his life for once and “the folk adore (him)”. That’s a complete 180 of the circumstances in which we first meet him, and suddenly all of the things that made him Cardan are no longer present to inform both his internal world or how he presents himself to the external world. Sure, the experience of his upbringing will always be a part of him, but he is now rebirthed and very much free from that.
So what does that leave us with? I can see how she wouldn’t know how to write an adult Cardan, in a way that would please audiences who grew to know him one way. .. it does make me kind of nervous for future Cardan books, but also curious with what she does with him.

the cruel prince headcannons i have and ik I'm right okay!? part 1/???
cardan absolutely loves and adores cats but Jude is slightly allergic since the hair makes her sneeze
because of this Cardan has a separate room for the plethora of cats he has rescued and adopted from the human realm
he even has specific clothes he wears to the rooms so Jude doesn't have problems when she hugs him (or when she takes the clothes off ;) )
Jude loves lavenders, they are one of the few plants he can keep alive for some magical reason and plants a whole patch of them in the royal garden. Apart from her, Cardan is the only one allowed there
Jude has 3 moles on her hip and they are Cardan's favourite places to kiss
Cardan has one nasty gash across his right rib from Balekin's torture, even though it's healed it shows a lot and Jude loves to trace over it gently because she likes seeing how it calms Cardan
Cardan absolutely hates the smell of oranges, he swears he would like them if they didn't smell so rancid to him
Taryn has always loved gold and Jude has always loved silver
Jude also really liked copper on frames, mirrors, and general miscellaneous items, but liked her jewellery to be silver
Vivi loved green and grey and always had them in her room decorations, but after a while, her room became slowly more pink, for unknown reasons.
Vivi absolutely adores Taylor Swift and brings vinyls home for Jude and Taryn to listen to
Jude's favourite albums were Evermore and Reputation while Taryn's were Speak Now and Folklore
Cardan hated vanilla. anything vanilla flavoured or scented, he would throw out
Vanilla was also known to be Prince Dain's favourite scent.
Since cardan was raised by a cat he has developed feline instincts so he can practically jump from any height and a little-known fact is, if you pull him by his collar, he will immediately go limp and follow you anywhere (Jude uses this tactic to get him to go to meetings more often than he'd like to admit)
Cardan's favourite Mortal movie is mean girls. no questions asked

The High King of Flowers
AO3 LINK
MASTERLIST
Fandom: The Folk of the Air
Ship: Jurdan
Word count: 1.1k
~~~~~
They were sitting in the throne room, Cardan looking as bored as ever as two little faeries droned on and on, complaining endlessly about their measly little problems. He absolutely loathed this part of being High King; always having to pretend to care about even the smallest of quarrels in Elfhame and judge them accordingly, lest his subjects would turn away from him for not acting as a “proper and prosperous High King” would and should. Cardan hated it. He like the gifts, the praises, and the long revels with wine and dancing that went on and on until the early mystical hours of the day. Though, in some twisted way, he enjoyed all the attention and importance he was finally being rightfully given as faeries come to him with all of their troubles and worries.
“Well, perhaps it was his fault, this time. As such, Diaspor, you shall give Torren your first berry harvest every month for the next fifteen years, and in return, Torren, you shall teach him how to weave his dried bark strips into the finest of enchanted baskets,” Cardan mused, glancing over at Jude, waiting for her usual approving nod at his conclusions. Jude stared absentmindedly into space, her fingers vacuously stroking the colorful petals of the flowers and the many plants decorating and encasing their thrones. He quickly noticed her dazed state, her gaze fixed on an unfocused spot in the room.
His eyes snapped to the faeries and guards in the throne room as he dismissed them. “Leave us be.”
At his immediate words, they all filed out of the large ornate room, though not without sparing a few curious and inquisitive glances behind them. Cardan reached out his hand, each finger carefully and glamorously embellished with daintier, shiny rings. He lightly grazed his knuckles over the soft round curve of her ear, meticulously admiring the glittering golden ornaments decorating it, the same color as the shimmery swipe of glitter that he always wore on his well-defined cheekbones.
“Jude, my lovely, what are you thinking about this time?” he probe, not exactly used to his High Queen being so utterly… absent. At the sound of his silken voice, her face tilted upwards, her calculating eyes rising to meet Cardan’s adoring ones.
“I was thinking about Vivi, she murmured, “she snagged a date with Heather for tonight. I hope everything goes okay with them this time.” Jude wasn’t the type to worry, yet her voice sounded uncharacteristically strained. She truly cared about her sister, and hoped that Vivi could rekindle her relationship with Heather. Heather, whom both Vivi and Oak dearly missed.
His fingers moved downward, tracing and weaving through the silky brown locks resting on her nape. “And no date for us tonight as well, hmm?” he teased, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of his perfect plush lips.
“You know, these flowers really are beautiful,” she remarked, her attention once again turning to the lovely decorations around their thrones.” Cardan raised an eyebrow. “You think?” It was unlike Jude to pay such attention top details as small and insignificant as decorations.
“Sometimes it’s hard to believe that someone like you could conjure up such delicate and colorful flowers,” she shot back.
Cardan gasped dramatically, his hands immediately leaving Jude’s smooth cheeks to clutch theatrically at his chest as though she’d shot a glamoured arrow right through it.
“How dare you! I am very much delicate; my skin is as soft as the finest of moth’s dew-bathed silk, and my palms are free of the scars and scratches of a forceful warrior,” he retorted, quick to defend his honor. It was all true, and it was difficult to imagine a faerie more delicate than Cardan. Cardan, who wore eyeliner and kohl to enhance his mischievous eyes. Cardan, who carefully brushed shimmering stardust on his cheekbones. Cardan, who wears the most lavish and unnecessarily intricate doublets and royal clothing. And finally, Cardan, who had recently developed a new liking to lightly staining his lips with the ripest and best of autumn faerie gooseberries. It left a faint sour taste on Jude’s tongue every time she kissed him.
To prove his point even further, he sprang up from his seat, carefully clutching Jude’s wrist and dragging her behind him. Cardan led her straight out of the throne room and into the royal gardens, making sure that all of the faeries who worked to maintain it where gone. Unlike his brother, Balekin, Cardan had never, ever, glamoured defenseless humans into working for him at the palace. Hell, he’d even brought forth a law that forbade it. Yet he still wasn’t willing to admit that on that night, many moon cycles ago, he’d truly cared about that human and saved her from Balekin.
And so, the High King of Elfhame sat his queen down amidst the prosperous rows of blooming flowers, standing proudly before her. Cardan kneeled besides Jude, under the large willow that hid both of them, tucking them into their own little world.
“Jude,” Cardan breathed. His eyes were locked on her, drunkenly inhaling on the image of she who haunted his mind all the time, be it in his thoughts during even the most important of meetings or at night, dancing with his heart cradled in her hands in his dreams. She was his anti-medusa, the ferocious beast of a warrior who had shattered his heart of stone, filling it with the pulsating life of her ambition. The mortal girl who so obstinately wore her hair up in little horns. It was such pure, primitive sense of life that no faerie could have or understand, no matter their eternal lifespan. It was iron that faeries, who could live forever with their magic and enchantments, never truly lived, not in the way that humans do. Not like Jude.
Cardan removed Jude’s crown off of her head and set it safely on her lap, yet it was immediately devoured by the many sparkling layers of red fabric. Red, just like the color of the roses he was weaving into each other by the stems like a flower crown, making sure no thorns remained. He intertwined the flower circlet through her royal crown, then placed it atop her head once more, admiring the way it matched her dress and the faint blush on her cheeks she believed so soundly that she was able to hide. “Wear these. Just like my love for you, the flowers shall never wither or fade.”
“My darling High Queen,” he murmured, utterly drunk on her very presence eternally by his side, his lips brushing against hers, “my Jude.”
JudeCardan Headcanon!
I once saw a headcanon that maybe Jude and Cardan have a rule that after a certain hour they aren't allowed to talk about politics anymore and I loved it so much I can't stop thinking about it.
I am so 100% sure that Cardan was the one who came up with it, 'cause I can just see them getting ready for bed and Cardan (as always) was adoring his wife was she moved across the room.
But Jude was just going on and on over how annoying the council had been today and everytime she mentioned Randalin his face would pop up in Cardan's head and it would ruin everything.
So he at one point just screamed her name which, of course, instantly put her in fight mode looking alarmed at him and ready to stab anyone with the dagger she took from the hidden pocket she has in her nightgown.
Glad to had gotten her attention this conversation took place:
Cardan: "I just had the most amazing idea!"
Jude: "It better be or else I'm using this dagger on you,"
He of course dismissed the threat with a smirk as he always does...
C: "We should set a time after which we are not allowed to talk politics, I'm thinking from dinner forward,"
J: "What do you mean?"
C: "I mean that while I love nothing more than watching your sexy scheming face and am more than happy to listen to you all day, I would much prefer not to talk about Baphen, war and, even worse, Randalin while we are dining or when I'm watching you so gorgeously undress,"
J: "So you want to set a time after which I cannot scheme anymore?"
C: "Oh I'm not foolish to think I can stop you from scheming, nor do I want to. I just wish not to speak of political matters 24/7,"
J: "Okay, understood...we could try that. Yes, it would be nice."
C: "It would."
J: "It was a good idea, after all."
C: "All of my ideas are good ideas!"
I actually think it would that Cardan a bit more of convincing Jude but yall get it.
While I know every once in a while Cardan has to remind her of the rule I just know there was at least one time Cardan was the one rambling about their royal duties after their set time and Jude was the one who had to stop him.
They are just so freaking adorable and I love them so freaking much, I could read a whole book series just about them being married, just domestic things. I would pay millions for it.
wow that was a lot...byeeee ♡
So I just finished reading The Prisoners Throne Excerpt
*sharp inhale* *screams into the void*
AND I HAVE THOUGHTS PEOPLE!!!
First of all WHAT DID CARDAN DO!?!?!?!??! SERIOUSLY WHAT HAPPENED THAT WAS SO BAD THAT OAK THINKS THAT CARDAN WOULD ACTIVELY TRY TO KILL HIM!?!?! They were cool the last time we saw the so WTF!?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously this part got me so curious I won't be able to stop thinking about it for the next 3 months! Oak has so much hot family drama to spill!!
But moving on from that.
I love how we're finally exploring Oak's charming ability and how he starts doubting it himself if he really did subconsciously use them with Wren
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we got so many moments of Oak recalling his training with the court of shadows. He considers them all his friends and recalls those memories so fondly it was so sweet (he sounded more comfortable with them than when he recalled anything about Jude let alone Cardan apparently). That whole convo with the Ghost was especially adorable:
The Ghost/Garrett: How are your skills with the blade?
Oak: I'm eleven???
Also can we please talk about jealous Oak please! Like my boy, out of all the times and occasions! He's so desperate it's hilarious
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still in the OakWren train, this boy is so down bad it's pathetic. The way he waits for her even if it's just to command or scorn him, simply because he wishes to see her. Regretting every single thing he hid from and feeling like shit because he can't even apologise since she doesn't come see him. BRUTALLY ANNIHILATING that mechanical snake since it could have been going to poison Wren. Pleading to postpone his rescue just so he could talk to her.
Favorite part was when he recalled Wren's betrayed face after she found out the truth and going "Damn yeah I really do deserve to be in here locked up, still need to escape tho, but I deserve this."
Oh Greenbriar men, you and your love for evil women who you accidentally betrayed and kept you imprisoned. Alexa play Loverboy.
Loved that this entire paragraph (besides Cardan's vendetta against Oak WHICH IS KILLING ME) was just Oak going
Oak: Angry vengeful Jude? Yikes. Angry vengeful Wren? Yikes. Angry vengeful Jude and Wren against each other? We're doomed
Tumblr media
And finally we at least now know where the ring from the cover came from!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Holly Black did say that an important element in the cover is how the ring is frozen in the brances, unmoving. I wonder if it's some kind of symbolism about Oak's inability to leave Weren, how he is trapped by her not only physically by the briddle, but emotionally too? That would be so cool
Tho this first chapter sneek peak gave me more questions than answers, I really enjoyed getting a feel of what the book would be like from Oak's pov (regretting, simping, scheeming and a whole lot of Keeping Up with the Greenbriar/Duartes). God I can't wait 3 more months I need this book in my hands now!!!
I’m finally posting my Jurdan FF! I have a little trove of them hidden away, because Holly Black’s writing style is so fantastic and I was sure I couldn’t do it justice. But then I reread HTKOELTHS and I just really wanted to get this piece out into the world for all the Cardan lovers out there.
Enjoy!
“It’s absurd, sometimes, the thought that she loves him. He’s grateful, of course, but it feels as though it’s just another of the ridiculous, absurd, dangerous things she does. She wants to fight monsters, and she wants him for a lover, the same boy she fantasized about murdering. She likes nothing easy or safe or sure. Nothing good for her.” HTKOELTHS, pg. 4
“Jude.” Cardan called up to the tree in which I perched. He was not angry, exactly. But he was surely displeased.
“Shh,” I whispered sharply at him. Now was not the time for his disapproval. Not when any more sound from either of us was likely to scare off my target. Cardan just crossed his arms and glowered up at me. I tried not to think of how much I liked that look on his face.
Honestly, I was a little surprised he hadn’t discovered me sooner. I had been up here for an hour already, waiting for the harpy I was hunting to appear. The creature was a mischievous little thing that had been preying on the marketplace for over a fortnight. And, given that I was skilled enough with a bow to be able to handle the problem from a distance with very little risk to myself, I gladly robbed one of our knights of the glory of taking the little pest down.
Cardan, of course, was utterly exasperated at my conveying a plan to capture this newest inconvenience to the crown. ‘A task for which we have knights,’ he’d said. Indeed, it was. But I am no knight. Madoc made sure of that.
No, I am the Queen.
I had to remind myself of that, sometimes. That I had power here, and that I could choose to use it if I wished. And despite Cardan believing otherwise, I would never feel like I didn’t need to earn my place beside him.
Besides, every monster that I hunt down was one less threat that the crown faced. Threats that could hurt me, or hurt Cardan. I may be feared in this land—for my viciousness, my reputation. I may even be disliked for my mortality. But Cardan was positively adored by the Folk, and I would always protect him. Once as his seneschal, now as his wife. As his Queen.
He thinks me brash and unpredictable, that I am doing this because I seek the thrill of it. And, perhaps he is right. But he is also wrong.
I do it because I love Elfhame, and I love him, and they are one and the same now. I know he is clever enough to understand this, but I think sometimes that he chooses not to. I think, sometimes, that be believes he must earn me, too.
He doesn’t. He’s had me entwined around his heart of ice far longer than I’d ever care to admit.
My thoughts on The Prisoner's Throne.
(spoilers ahead, and talk about Holly Black's planned book)
ps: I finished this book in one sitting on release day and needed days to process everything, that's why this is a late post. Enjoy!!!!
Heather and Vivi
Where were Heather and Vivi? They were present in the prologue but then they vanished. I was excited to see Vivi become friends with Wren, especially after the rude comments she made towards Wren in TQON. I wonder why Holly excluded them from everything after the prologue, such as the family drama scene at the feast. However, I appreciated how they were mentioned in the story, particularly when we learned that Oak and Heather's mom are close, and that Oak would sleep at their house.
Oak abdicating as heir
So yeah, Jude and Cardan have given Oak permission to resign from the throne as heir, and obviously Oak is taking that opportunity to do just that, just not yet….he has to stay heir for months since Jude and Cardan are going away together. I always knew Jude and Cardan were going to stay as High King and Queen of Elfhame, but only because Oak married Wren and therefore became King of the Ice Needle Citadel, but that didn't happen…Jude is letting him step down because she knows he's grown, and wants him to make his own choices, which is great. If Oak resigns, Jude and Cardan will need to have a child to maintain the royal lineage. So, it's VERY possible that we may see a Jurdan baby in the future.
political problem (Holly Black's next faerie book)
So finally we know what the next book will be about. We know that Jude and Cardan have plans to go to the Undersea. That was the plan Holly Black has been teasing at us for a long time now. This means we’re getting another Elfhame book (Holly didn't say an "Undersea book", she said "Elfhame" even though it's going to be set in the Undersea). In an interview online, Holly Black states that this book will possibly be a stand-alone. Many fans are speculating that this book is going to be a Nicasia POV, but from reading the interviews from Holly I believe it’s going to be either a Jude or Cardan POV (maybe even both). This would make sense since Holly has said many times that she's planning to give us more Jurdan, and that Jude still has a lot of story in her. The Prisoner's Throne leaves us with many unanswered questions, such as what happens to the Ghost, if Oak gets married, news about Wren and her family, and whether Jude and Cardan have children. A standalone book to wrap up these loose ends would be very needed.
Cardan saving and being protective of Jude
Do you guys remember the post I made about Cardan fighting alongside Jude? and how he will not sit on the sidelines to watch her fight? Fans who know Cardan well already knew this to be true, but this book further proved this. This isn’t the first time has Cardan stepped in front of Jude to save her from being impaled. My man sacrificed himself so Jude wouldn't get hurt. Many times during the Stolen Heir duology Cardan has been called a coward, but mannn he's no coward, he will protect those he loves dearly, it was so refreshing to get more of his protective side in this book.
Taryn and The ghost
Since TQON, fans have been speculating that Garrett and Taryn are involved in a romantic relationship. Although it wasn't confirmed in the book, The Prisoner's Throne offered some insight into this. We find out that Heather, Vivi, and Oak have all speculated about it. Furthermore, Oak reveals that even after 10 years, The Ghost has remained close to Taryn and her child Leander. In one chapter of TPT, The Ghost has a serious conversation with Oak, but when Leander interrupts them, Oak notices that The Ghost becomes a different person around Taryn's son. He changes his behavior and has an indulgent smile towards the boy. I personally find it adorable, and after all the hardships The Ghost has been through, I believe he deserves to find happiness, even if it's with Taryn of all people.
The Ghost’s tragedy *sobs into pillow*
I never expected The Ghost to become such a prominent character in the book. It was amazing how I started to develop an emotional attachment to the Ghost throughout the book, only for him to end up turning into a tree by the end. The chapter where the family feasts and Lady Elaine and the Ghost are found dead was pure chaos and full of royal family drama. I had such a good time reading that part, until the Ghost turned into a tree. Also, going back to the topic of the Ghost and Taryn, I feel bad for Taryn even though I know she is a terrible character. It was heartbreaking to see Taryn sob and hold the Ghost while he was slowly dying (We didn't get word from Taryn that they were dating but I think that part was enough comfirmation that they were indeed lovers). As far as we know, Taryn and the Ghost did not get a happy ending in this book :(
ps: This is why I believe holly black's next book will be a Jurdan POV, because the only way we get to know about the ghost is through them. Nicasia is not close to Wren, Oak, the Ghost, or Taryn, we will never get insight on what happens to them if this next book is a Nicasia POV. Also I've been hearing as of 3/12/24 that Holly might possibly write a Jurdan dual POV, so...more reason to believe that it will definitely not be a Nicasia POV.
Taryn Vs Wren
It's funny how Holly decided to create a lot of family issues in the second book of the duology. Many fans believe that this duology should have been a three-part series to resolve these issues. One major problem is that Taryn dislikes Wren and holds her responsible for what happened to The Ghost. Oak's family is also not very fond of Wren. It would have been nice to see a moment in the book where Oak's family and Wren could have worked together and gotten along, but that didn't happen. If Oak and Wren plan to get married, I hope that they can resolve these issues between them all.
Cardan VS Taryn
It shocked me that after 10 years of them being brother and sister in law, that they still don’t get along. I think Taryn was wrong to feel like she had to protect The Ghost from Cardan when he was only trying to help. In fact, it annoyed me a bit. While Cardan was respectful towards Taryn, he had every right to dislike her, unlike Taryn who had no reason to dislike Cardan. Moreover, I would like to mention the moment when they found the ghost almost dead and Cardan ignored Taryn and answered Jude instead, Cardan being petty to Taryn in the most respectful way is hilarious. I think that moment perfectly sums up their relationship.
Wren’s Family
Although I’m happy Wren's sister Bex reunited with Wren, I was very much expecting to get more closure from that, like seeing Wren's entire family together reunite in the book. It feels like that left a huge void at the end of the book.
Wren’s Transformation
Okay, that was absolutely shocking. Holly mentioned in one of her interviews that there would be a transformation in the book, and I guess that was it. Wren now has beautiful wings. Can someone please draw a picture of Wren with wings? Also, can you imagine what Oak and Wren's children would look like if they ever had any? Their child would have blue skin, hooves, and wings. That would be a very interesting looking child.
Wren VS Jurdan
Wren was so wrong for making Jude and Cardan appear weak in front of their court. While reading this part, I remember thinking 'Wren, please stop," I found this chapter fun to read, and seeing Jude and Cardan's reaction to Wren's power. It was interesting to see how Wren exposes Jude's geas and curse to almost the entire court, and how Cardan becomes overprotective of Jude while Wren was removing her curse. I love Cardan.
Where was Queen Annett?
Since the stolen heir, I believed that queen Annett was going to be a problem for Elfhame and Wren. As you may recall, Wren freed her prisoners, and I always believed Queen Annett would've punished Elfhame for it since Wren was with Elfhame's heir Oak. However, she did not appear in The Prisoner Throne at all. I wonder if Holly forgot to bring this issue up or if she has decided to address it in her upcoming faerie book. (Queen Annett is also pregnant, so I think she will definitely be brought up again)
Madoc's Character
I'm a bit disappointed. I was expecting a lot from Madoc in this book, but nothing happened, except the fact that Jude lifted his exile (temporarily?) It bothers me that she lifted his exile easily, does Jude not remember he caused many problems for them? Madoc is the reason why Cardan almost died, why Oak was put in danger, he's the reason why the royal family died, and why Orlagh was weakened. I at least expected that Jude lifting his exile would've caused political problems for her, since Madoc is a political criminal for Elfhame and the Undersea. I thought he would’ve at least made a big heroic or villainous move in The Prisoner's Throne, or found a way to at least redeem himself, but nope.
Oak and Wren's Ending
So…Oak does not become king of anything, which is shocking. Everyone believed that if he didn’t become the King of Elfhame he would at least rule the Ice Needle Citadel, which can still happen, since he did propose to Wren at the end of the book. But still, I find it unnecessary, I think that Wren should step down from being Queen, and run to the mortal world with Oak where they can live away from the royal duties. Oak has expressed many times he does not want to be king, but if he marries Wren he will be king, which doesn't seem satisfying to me. Wren never cared for power in The Stolen Heir, she only ever cared for love and her family, I think the ending felt incomplete and unfinished. A lot of stuff was built up from The Folk Of The Air series, and this duology was supposed to give us results, but it did not. Even Oak and Wren's love story felt rushed. I didn’t see much of a connection. It didn't give me much of what I felt when I read Jude and Cardan's love story (You guys are so welcome to disagree with me)
Jude and Oak
So if you read the book, you know how shocking Jude and Oak's relationship became. Especially that scene where they “duel” (And Jude was an absolute fucking badass in that scene) The way she tricked Hag and even Oak at first that she was going to trade Oak for Cardan. I was very impressed with Jude in this book, especially in this chapter where we see her ordering her archers, and her ripping her dress to be able to fight while she's all wet. Her dialogue was so badass: "What if I give you Oak's head instead of Cardan's" and even this quote "Well, then, what a wonderful opportunity for you to prove your loyalty and die for the High King." Chapter 23 (I was so gay for Jude in this chapter, she was so mommy material) Despite feeling a bit betrayed by Oak and believing that she had failed in protecting him, she still trusted him when it came to Wren.
Oak Vs Taryn
"For a moment, he thinks of going over there and dumping his red clover tea over his sister's head" (Chapter 19)
(Jaw was on the FLOOR when i read this) I think it really sucked that Oak's family never told him about this, and I understand that Oak had every right to feel so raged that his family hid his mother’s true killer from his knowledge. Oak and The Ghost have been close, we did get some insight of The Ghost going to the mortal world and train Oak with Magic. I really hope Oak and The ghost's issue gets resolved, but that can only happen when the ghost gets cured....I love family drama, and it shows.
Jurdan Kids
Going back to the topic at hand, Cardan and Jude have given Oak permission to abdicate, which leads me to believe that they are planning to have kids of their own. So far, there hasn't been any indication from Jurdan that they are against having children. Holly has given us insights into Jurdan taking care of Leander, which is incredibly heartwarming. For example, we find out that Cardan plays with Leander, and there's a part where Jude is in the mortal world with newborn Leander, and Oak remembers Jude playing with baby Leander with a toy, almost like she was playing with a cat. I think these are definite hints from Holly that Jurdan would make great parents. Holly did say that we would get an answer to Jude and Cardan possibly having kids in the Prisoner's Throne, and I believe this was it. I will definitely make a separate post on this.
Randalian
I'm so happy this man is dead, it was long overdue. This man annoyed the crap out of us since the folk of the air series (it’s crazy that Jude and Cardan never decided to remove him from the living council, he never saw eye to eye with Jude and disrespected them constantly)
Lady Asha apperance
It turns out that Lady Asha is still in the court. She was only mentioned once when Lady Elaine was speaking with her. At that moment, I became suspicious and believed that Lady Asha was also part of the conspirators.
Locke appearance
The dream Oak had with Locke as a fox was fun and interesting. Even though it was a dream, it was cool to hear Locke again and how he acknowledged being murdered by Taryn.
Taryn is aging...but not Jude
FINALLY, we have some information on this topic. Oak describes Jude as looking very young, and Taryn as aging. He offers two possible explanations for this: either Taryn has visited the mortal world too often as her years are catching up to her, or becoming a mother has exhausted her. For a long time since TFOTA series, fans have speculated that since Jude is the Queen of Elfhame, she will never age. And it looks like Holly seems to support this, especially since Oak finally wonders "if Jude is quite as mortal as she once was". I from now on have no doubt about it, i am a "Jude will never age as long as she's Queen of Elfhame" believer.
The Cardan and Oak problem
it turns out that it wasn’t a big deal, Oak had been too much in his head, he was his own enemy when it came to Cardan, and it was amazing to see Cardan and Oak have a brotherly talk by the end of this book. Cardan’s character has really matured, and its amazing how comfortable he's become with his loved ones (i love him so much) I will admit, that when Cardan was talking to Oak about delaying his abdication of heir, I thought he was going to announce Jude’s pregnancy and you can't blame me, the way Holly wrote it made it sound like he was going to do that. (would’ve made me scream) but nope.
Summary:
The beginning was slow, but I nonetheless enjoyed it. I love Oak and Wren, however, I felt that they could have had a stronger connection in the story. There were too many unanswered questions left in the book, and it did not provide any closure to Oak and Wren's future. I feel that the series should have been a three-part book series instead of a duology. Moreover, many of the main characters seemed to have lost their power, such as Oak's resignation as heir to the throne, Wren losing her godly powers, and Tiernan being fired from his position as Oak's guard. I think many new readers who have never read the Folk of The Air series might not have appreciated that. Despite this, I appreciate that Jurdan was not removed from the Elfhame throne. However, I think that Holly Black set up more problems in this book than solutions, which makes it feel neglectful towards Oak and Wren's story. I am excited about this book, and I am sad that we may not get more news on Elfhame until possibly 2026, as she is currently working on the second book of The Book of Night. Anyways, In other news, I have a virtual event with Holly Black tonight 3/12/24, so I will write anything important down, and I will try to ask good questions!
⭐️ ― convincing portrayal of a canon character
@bccksmarts - Anyone who hasn't witnessed Pom's Hermione is seriously missing out. The amount of time and effort that she puts into Hermione is evident in every single one of her replies and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to write with Pom and her Hermione!
@cruelprincae - Chrissie's Cardan???! Just wow, not only is Cardan spot on, Chrissie is an absolutely stellar writer and every time I get a reply back I just sit and stare at it in awe. Chrissie had put so much thought into the literature of Cardan and every headcanon is just perfection.
@fiercehearts - I absolutely love and adore all of Alex's muses, but I have to gush about Kenzi for a second. I know we haven't done too much with Kenzi and Dyson yet (mostly because I have the pace of a dead snail), but any post Alex make with Kenzi, I can hear her voice every time and Kenzi is just written so amazingly.!
💻 ― excellent writing
@isdeathlystill - TEA! Tea is honestly one of my favourite people and her threads always help push me to be a better writer! She has such an amazing talent for writing and is so creative with some really amazing OC muses as well as writing spot-on canon muses that are so varied and well written.
@dreamingonthedaily - Lulu here own my heart and soul, I should have that known firstly. Lulu is such an amazing writer and put so much thought into her writing it's unreal. Every thread fits in the world it's in perfectly and just makes so much sense. I get so excited for our threads honestly. Lulu normally gets me gushing to her over video call about our threads.
@lcveblossomed - Sage is such a talented writer! Their threads are always so amazing to read and has so many amazing OC's who I forget constantly aren't canon (Like Pepper and Lenny who are just *chef kiss*). I am beyond grateful to get to write with Sage and always look forward to all our threads!
📚 ― nice threads to read
@scarredfeathers - Moth always seems to have the loveliest OC's and Jewel is no exception. I love Jewel so much and will always find myself reading other Jewel posts because she'd the cutest and has such an amazing backstory regardless to the verse and Moth puts so much love and effort into Jewel.
@gentlepuff - While I don't have too much going with Mari and Odette yet, I always love to see Odette popping up on my dash and enjoy reading all the threads when I see them! I honestly can't wait to write more!
📌 ― a staple on the dash
@denydefeat - Nadia is the definition of a staple on the dash. She is a wonderful writer, with so many interesting muses and I'm always excited to see what is going to come up in our threads. Especially when we have so many muse combinations between us both to play with. I wouldn't be without Nadia on my dash!
@dynastymuses - Kate is one of those blogs I just constantly look at with heart eyes. Not only is she an insanely talented writer, but amazing with graphics and edits. You can tell in her writing that she loves and adores her muses because you can feel how much she understand them in how well they're written!
@twistedtangledfate - Bee is a sweetheart and not only is Bee a super talented writer but one of the kindest and most supportive writing partners you can have. I deeply enjoy all our threads and when we speak OOC and I look forward to all that we end up doing in the future. 100% a must follow if you aren't already!
🏆 ― 10/10 blog, would recommend
@3katanas - This woman right here is one of my bestest friends and puts up with my shit often. I love Kira a whole damn lot. She always puts so much time and effort into whatever muse she's writing whether OC or canon and into their backstory and their verses and into ensuring that the theme of the blog matches the muse and it always looks stunning and she's an amazing writer too.
@hellgiven - Charli is just so talented I can't. She had such a knack with taking canon muses from one fandom and moving them to new fandoms and making it fele as is they had always been there. I honestly need to remind myself at times that Caroline and Davina originated in different fandoms because Charli puts so much love and lore into any muse she writes and I adore Charli.
@ofblackskies - Jenna has been putting up with my weirdo self for over 7/8 years now and she is honestly just a fantastic writer and a fantastic friend and I love and adore her so damn much. and never mind 10/10, she is 10000000000/10 must follow. No matter what blog I have, or she has, I will follow her into fandoms I know zilch about just to see her perfection.
