warnings: mentions of oda’s death, mention of the orphanage, hurt comfort, dazai is being dazai
pairing: atsushi x reader (reader is oda’s younger sibling in this)
author’s note: i got sad thinking about oda :( timeline wise i imagined this to go in between the first arc and the guild arc just in case you were curious. i might make a part 2 of this cuz i like the premise
Tumblr media
“reader!“ you looked up at the sound of the bell chiming and people entering the cafe. as usual it was some members of the detective agency upstairs. dazai was leading the pack, behind him doctor yosano and ranpo, and lastly atsushi. they looked pretty pleased with themselves, they must have just finished with a case.
“you all look chipper, did you finish a case?” you asked them with a friendly smile, starting to prepare a few baked treats for them (mainly ranpo) and freshly brewing some coffee.
“all thanks to me!” ranpo replied as they sat down in a booth. it made you smile hearing ranpo recount the events of the case with the occasional comment or correction from yosano and dazai. it also gave you enough time to finish their usual orders and put them on their table.
once you got to atsushi you noticed how silent he was and seemed to be avoiding looking at you directly. you furrowed your eyebrows and looked at dazai, who in turn just shrugged innocently, but you knew that he knew something like he always did. you turned to look at ranpo in hopes of getting something from him, but he was already munching away on the piece of cake you gave him. doctor yosano wasn’t much help either, idly drinking coffee without a care in the world.
you returned to the counter and cleaned a few glasses, listening to the agency having a few humerus exchanges and keeping an eye on the clock in the corner of the room. yosano and ranpo left after a while, but dazai and atsushi remained.
“oh, that reminds me. you have somewhere to be today, don’t you reader?” you looked up at the mention of your name and saw dazai looking at you with a knowing expression.
“if you already know, why are you asking me?”
“that’s no way to talk to the person who got you this job,” he replied, before sitting up straight and turning a bit more serious. it was a rare sight nowadays, and it usually wasn’t very good when it happened. “i know i promised i’d come with you, but something came up.”
you blinked in surprise, “you’re not coming? but today-“
“i’m sorry,” he wasn’t. he took another sip of coffee and turned to look at atsushi opposite to him, who looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here. “i have something more important to do. but atsushi here is free. i’m sure he’ll be happy to accompany you.”
both you and atsushi’s eyes widened at the moment, for very different reasons. you didn’t want to bother him with your problems, that besides the fact that dazai had that look on his face that meant that he was planning something, meanwhile atsushi simply didn’t want to intrude into your personal life, seemingly unaware of dazai’s ulterior motive.
“oh, i can go alone.“ you quickly said, busying yourself with cleaning the counter.
dazai however shook his head. “no way. it’s way too dangerous with the port mafia around. besides, i think it’s best if you have someone around for this.”
you looked down for a moment, dazai probably was right (like always). you lifted your head and looked at atsushi, wondering what he thought. he was anxiously fiddling with his hands, not really knowing what to do. this seemed more like a thing between you and dazai if he was being honest. he sensed your questioning gaze on him and jumped a little in his seat.
“oh, i don’t mind if you don’t,” he replied earnestly, “i finished all of my work today early so i have the time.”
you turned your gaze back at dazai, who only looked at you curiously, probably awaiting your next move. in the end you let out a sigh and nodded your head at the two men.
“okay, but just this once,” you said to atsushi softly, before looking at dazai with a hardened expression, “And you owe me.”
your shift ended a few minutes later, dazai left to attend to his very important thing he told nobody about, and you and atsushi set off to your desired destination.
on the way you stopped to get some flowers, and you made some pleasant small talk. it made you realise how little time you have actually spent with atsushi. he told you about his time at the agency and how he’s enjoying it so far (besides the countless near death experiences) and you told him about your life, which was very mundane and the only exciting thing was when the agency came down from work to eat and drink at the cafe.
you eventually reached your destination and upon seeing it, you expected atsushi to ask you why you were here, but he didn’t, which meant he knew why you were here. you walked up ahead and atsushi followed you silently, eventually you turned to face him.
“aren’t you going to ask me?”
his face turned red, “a-ask you what, reader?”
“why we bought the flowers and why we’re at a cemetery,” you explained slowly, making him turn even redder.
he laughed awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck, “oh, yeah why is that?”
you only deadpanned at his reaction, “you’re a horrible actor.” you told him, before softening a little, “dazai told you.”
you continued you way down the rows and rows of graves, before walking up a small hill with a tree on top. atsushi continued to follow you and explained himself to you, his cheeks still a little red from being flustered.
“b-before we went to the cafe today dazai-san told me that you might be acting a bit moody, when i asked why that was he told me that it’s because today’s the anniversary of your brother’s death… b-but i didn’t know that he was going to make me come here with you, i suppose that’s just regular dazai-san for you…i’m sorry I didn’t say anything sooner.”
you let his words sink in and nodded, stopping at the sole grave at the top of the hill. you let out a deep breath. “it’s alright, atsushi. dazai was being dazai again… i know you were just trying to protect my feelings.”
atsushi let out a breath and relief as he heard you say that, his face returning to its normal colour. you smiled a little and handed him a flower from your bunch.
“you can put one down too,” you told him softly. “normally dazai would join me for this, but you’ll do too,” atsushi gulped nervously, but nodded. together the two of you placed the flowers carefully on to his grave, a bitter sweet feeling in the air.
afterwards you two sat down by the tree, which was overlooking the rest of the graves on the cemetery as well as a small part of the ocean. it was nice a quiet and a small breeze was in the air, it was quite beautiful. you turned your head away from the sight and saw atsushi eyeing the grave with the new flowers on it.
“i still remember the last thing he said to me,” you spoke up, making him immediately snap his attention back to you. “It was ‘see you later’ I didn’t think too much about it at first but, looking back he probably knew he wasn’t going to make it back… he knew he was going to leave me, and he did it anyways…”
“i’m sure he wouldn’t have left you if there was another choice.” atsushi replied, trying to make you feel better. “he probably was trying to get the best possible out come for everyone.”
your hands subconsciously balled into fists as you avoided atsushi’s gaze and looked at the grave instead. “you don’t know him, you don’t even know what happened leading up to it. heck, i didn’t know what was going on until dazai told me days later…” you took a deep shaky breath, putting your face into your hands, as tears started to gather in the corners of your eyes. “i’m sorry. i didn’t mean that.”
atsushi was quick to put a comforting hand on your shoulder and give you soft pats. he actually didn’t know what he was suppose to do. growing up in the orphanage he never really had to comfort any other people besides himself, if you started fully crying right now he would start to panic. “i-it’s alright, you are right. i didn’t know him and i don’t know what happened…” he said sincerely, “a-and i have never lost someone i truly care about. i was always alone up until i met you and the agency. i couldn’t possible tell you anything to make you feel better and for that i’m sorry. but i am willing to listen if you need to vent…”
he saw how your body visibly relaxed and let out a quiet breath in relief. you turned to look at him again, a small grateful smile on your face. “thank you…”
he smiled back at you, “no problem.”
the two of you spent the remainder of the day by that tree, simply talking, something that humans surprisingly don’t do a lot anymore. talking to atsushi was nice, he was very considerate of your thoughts and feelings and listened intently. he wasn’t being pushy, or disinterested, he was simply enjoying spending time with you.
eventually the sun started to set and you got up, stretching your limbs. “well, i’d better go home it’s getting dark.”
atsushi followed your lead and also got back up on his feet. “I’ll walk you home.”
“you don’t have to do that,” you told him, “you’ve done more than enough today.”
he only smiled softly at you. “i know i don’t have to, but i want to.”
you smiled back at him and nodded, “…okay.”

Ok, one thing I wanted to point out about the two Hunting Dogs Fukuchi chose to explain the truth to
When he told Jouno about the truth, he explained it in a way that made it seem like some kind of evil plot, allowing him to basically torture the Agency if he so wishes
Tumblr media
But when he explained his plans to Teruko, he told her a story that even made Atsushi reconsider his stance on taking down the Decay of Angels
Tumblr media
These were two very drastic differences, so I got to thinking (tho it has been a few days since I had the initial idea so bare with me)
We as the audience know that the Decay of Angels is bad overall, I mean they’re literally terrorists whose plans have already involved the deaths of over a hundred people, but why then would someone like Teruko join with them??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She has been shown to care about civilian life, in the Sky Casino she’s been shown not attacking the civilians even after they tried to kill her and Tachihara, and she stated how she views the Hunting Dogs as a violence that crushes down evil, and even that she hates worlds run by violence, but that is exactly what Fukuchi is creating, whether he sees it or not.
Tumblr media
She knows that the Decay of Angels are in charge of the vampire epidemic, and have killed so many people.
The thing is, she looked up to Fukuchi, she was his right hand, and she had most likely also seen the horrors of war, and agrees with Fukuchi on his plan to try and end the unnecessary deaths of people all because some big name politicians decided that they need to fight and die for their countries (I think everyone can agree with that, honestly).
Teruko probably doesn’t see any other option at this point. She doesn’t like the idea of technically siding with terrorists she probably won’t hesitate to kill, but she does want peace, she wants the fighting to stop, and maybe one massive fight to end them all is the only path she sees now.
Besides, what would have happened if she said no? She can’t beat him in a fight, and he wouldn’t just let her go. At that moment she probably realized that happened to Tachihara and Jouno, and she didn’t want to end up like them. Even if she could team up with someone she didn’t think the Agency would help her in any way, not after all that, and even then she probably doesn’t think they could beat him, either.
I’ve talked about this before, but she just seems so tired in the more recent chapters, angry. Her eyes are just so empty, she doesn’t even really seem to be trying other than telling the story to Atsushi.
Now, back to Jouno.
Fukuchi told him that he could be as evil as he wants with the Agency, which is very contradictory to what he told Teruko, which is probably closer to the truth (though the possibility that he was lying to her to get her to side with him more willingly is also very real and cannot be ruled out)
Fukuchi had assumed that Jouno was still the way he was when he first joined the Hunting Dogs, and did not expect him to have changed.
But Fukuchi was wrong about him, he very much had changed, and had grown to love protecting the innocent’s
Tumblr media
Now, it’s also important to mention that Jouno had no idea if Fukuchi was lying or not due to the noise amplifier, so we did not get Jouno’s point of view on if Fukuchi could possibly be lying here.
Tumblr media
What Fukuchi seems to be doing is playing into what he believes to be the Hunting Dogs interests to try and get them to join him.
Think about it, the Hunting Dogs are incredible assets one could have. Over the at least six years he’s been their Commander he had gained a level of trust with them, and an understanding of their strengths. He knew that if he could convince them to join him there would be next to nothing in the way of his plans. Heck, the only reason he even asked Jouno to join was because he wanted him to later join the DOA.
Fukuchi leaned into the parts of his goals to try and play into what the Hunting Dogs want. This plan worked for Teruko because he is much closer with her, but it failed with Jouno.
Hope I’m making sense, anyway that’s my BSD theory

Operation Weretiger: Success! (Bungo Stray Dogs)
Primary Universe
Summary: Dazai calls on Atsushi to help him after what seems to be a failed suicide attempt, but little does the weretiger know it's actually a trap set just for him...
A/N: This is my half of a collab with @giggly-squiggily! To read an alternate version of this story (in which Dazai's plan backfires), go check out her blog, or click here!
This was so much fun to work on! I've been wanting to write a ler!Dazai, lee!Atsushi fic for a little bit so this worked out really well! I also decided to go ahead and make it part of my Primary Universe since it seemed to flow pretty naturally into it.
Thanks so much to giggily-squiggily for joining me in this adventure! This was a lot of fun to write! ^^
Word Count: 1,513
Warning: Slight suicidal ideation (Dazai as a character likes the idea of suicide, so please be warned if that bothers you <3)
~~~
It was a beautiful day to die.
At least, that’s what Atsushi assumed Dazai had been thinking when he went to the park instead of the agency this morning, worrying him and making Kunikida angry in the couple of hours before he got a text saying the man was stuck and needed help. He decided not to tell his bespectacled coworker where he was going over his lunch break. It would probably be better for everyone if he didn’t know.
Now the young detective walked slowly and observantly through the park Dazai had mentioned, looking around for him, wondering how he could have gotten stuck in a place like this, and with so many people around.
He was just passing under a particularly large tree when he heard someone call out, “Atsushi! There you are.”
Atsushi whirled around, frowning when he didn’t see anyone, but it only took him a moment to understand that the voice had come from above him. Sure enough, when he looked up into the branches of the tree he stood under, Dazai was at least a dozen feet above him, waving cheerily.
“Dazai,” the weretiger scolded. “Please don’t tell me you planned to—” He cut himself off when he remembered how many little ones he’d passed on the way here. “…you-know-what, in a park of all places?”
“It was a beautiful morning to die,” Dazai said reasonably.
I knew it, Atsushi thought to himself, clenching his fists in frustration. “There are kids here!”
“There weren’t this morning. Besides, why do you think I hid myself up here? It would have been far more likely for an adult to find me—”
“Please stop talking.”
“But if it makes you feel better, I changed my mind after the sun came up.”
Well, that was a surprise. Atsushi felt relief flooding through him. “Good! I’m glad to hear that. But you were already up there and got stuck, so you need help getting back to the agency?”
“Well…I may have lied about the getting stuck part.”
“What do you mean?”
Dazai shifted into a crouching position in the tree, showing off his freedom of movement and the fact that he was very much not stuck at all. Atsushi stared at him incredulously.
“So you had me come all the way out here for nothing?”
“Not for nothing,” Dazai replied, suddenly flashing a beaming smile and lunging for the poor weretiger, simultaneously freeing himself from the branches and tackling his mentee into the plush grass surrounding the trunk of the tree.
Atsushi didn’t even have time to process that he was on the ground before he felt a strange, giddy sensation rising up in him and he bubbled out a handful of giggles, slapping a palm over his mouth in embarrassment before his brain caught up to what was happening now.
“Cheer up, Atsushi,” Dazai teased, pinching and poking sporadically up and down his sides and ribs. “I don’t want to die today after all.”
“Wha – whahahat? Dazahahahai! Nohohoho!” Atsushi squeaked, trying to roll over but feeling a weight settle on his lower stomach, trapping him in place on the ground. He stared up at Dazai’s smiling face and the picturesque view of the sunlight streaming through the tree branches above him and suddenly felt a wave of emotions come over him at once – none of which he had time to process since he was busy giggling up a storm right here in the open. “Plehehehease, Dazai! Not hehehehehere! We’re in puhuhuhuhublic!”
“So? No one seems to mind.” The older man glanced briefly around them, smirked, and continued, “Most people aren’t even paying attention, and those who are are smiling just as big as you. They seem to think you’re cuuuute, Atsushi~”
That only made the poor detective feel even more self-conscious. “Nohohohohooo!”
He’d only been tickled once in his entire life thus far, and that was Akutagawa’s doing. Where the Port Mafia executive had been straightforward and downright ruthless, Dazai was being gentle and playful, and it was messing with Atsushi’s mind in ways he couldn’t even explain. Was this the kind of tickling one did to a child? Was this what he’d been missing out on all his life?
“Cootchie coo~” Dazai teased him now, bringing him back into the present, quickly switching from poking to kneading into his sides, drawing a whine and a snort from the younger man. “Aww, are you ticklish here, Atsushi? Tickle, tickle~”
“Nahahahahaha! Plehehehehease!” Atsushi giggled, trying to lift his hips to buck him off, twist away, pull his hands off his sensitive sides, anything. He even tried shifting into his tiger form, but he realized immediately upon failing to do so that that wouldn’t do him any good against Dazai, whose ability was canceling others’ abilities. He wasn’t getting out of this through sheer force, that was for sure.
“Aw, you’re turning all pink like a cherry blossom,” Dazai cooed, scooting back a little so he was straddling his waist instead, able to scribble his fingers all over his belly. “Oho! That’s quite the reaction. Got a ticklish tummy, little kitty Atsushi?”
Atsushi was going to die if Dazai didn’t stop teasing him! “Nohohohoho! Don’t sahahahahay that!”
“Tickle, tickle, tickle! Where do you think you’re going, squirmy wormy kitty cat?” Dazai giggled along with him, circling his navel with a finger, thrilled when it got Atsushi to yelp and try to shove him away. “Uh-oh, did I find a good tickle spot?”
“Plehehehehease! N-Not thehehehehere, please, Dazahahahahahai!”
“Did Akutagawa find this spot?”
Why was he always bringing that grumpy jerk into things?! “Yehehehehehes!”
Dazai chuckled. “Did he tickle it?”
Atsushi’s face was positively burning at this point. “Stahahahahahahap teheheheheasing me! Plehehehehehease!”
“Fine, fine.” The older man finally took mercy (kind of) and plunged his finger into Atsushi’s belly button, beaming at the way it made the weretiger arch his back and screech and frantically claw at his arm in an attempt to escape. “Ooh, you’re super-duper ticklish here, aren’t you, Atsushi~?”
Atsushi simply could not take what was happening right now. He dug his heels into the grass and laughed openly and loudly, shaking his head in desperation, emotions swirling like a hurricane in his chest. He felt so playful and loved and seen, but at the same time he knew they were in public and everyone was watching him fall apart and he was so embarrassed he couldn’t stand it; he had a reputation to uphold now!
“DAHAHAHAHAZAI PLEHEHEHEHEHEASE!! AHAHAHAHAHA STAHAHAHAHAP!!” he begged, trying to push the man’s finger away from his navel and cover it up but too weakened by his laughter to follow through. Dazai just kept coming back to that spot, slipping in over and over again with an ease that was distressing to Atsushi. Through his teary vision he could see his mentor smiling gently at him, and it was all he could do not to completely unravel underneath his touch. “PLEASE, IT’S TOO MUHUHUHUHUHUCH!! I CAN’T – DAHAHAHAHAZAI I CAHAHAHAHAN’T!!”
Dazai seemed to understand that he was being serious, so he retracted his finger from Atsushi’s belly button and went back to gently skittering up and down his sides, easing him back down from the heights of his laughter to the gentle lows of a stream of giggles.
“I can’t believe you’ve never been tickled before. The people in your life before the agency have no idea what they were missing.”
Atsushi’s eyes widened, but thanks to the soft tickles he was still giggling, so he couldn’t even let the words sober him at all. That was probably Dazai’s intention.
“P-Plehehease, stohohohop,” Atsushi whined, letting out a squeak when his ribs were tweaked playfully. “It’s too muhuhuhuch…”
At last Dazai did stop, though he didn’t move from his perch on his mentee’s waist. “You should laugh more. It looks good on you. Also, tickling you is a lot of fun – I should tell the others how blushy and squirmy you get~”
“Dazai!” Atsushi cried, covering his face with both hands in embarrassment, but he couldn’t help but smile despite himself. Though it could be too much for his untrained nerves to handle, so far he hadn’t really hated being tickled. “You’re so mean. You promised you wouldn’t tickle me to death the first time, but here you are making me laugh my head off in public!”
Dazai gently pried his wrists from his face and smirked wickedly at him, sending a sharp, excited chill down the weretiger’s spine. “You think I was tickling you to death just now?”
Atsushi immediately had flashbacks to when Akutagawa had tickled him, saying, “You think you were laughing? You’ll know when you’re laughing, weretiger.”
He still had a lot to learn about tickling and being tickled, but he had a feeling he’d be getting plenty of lessons from here on out. He giggled nervously at the thought, which made Dazai chuckle as well.
“This was nothing,” the older detective promised teasingly. “But if you want a demonstration of how much worse it can be, I’m sure that can be arranged…”
I am obsessed with finding out which characters in Bungo Stray Dogs can drive. It all started when I noticed that out of all the characters 14 year old Kyoka is shown behind the wheel almost every time the ADA is going anywhere in a hurry. Atsushi who is 18 has been in the passenger seat beside her multiple times with no mention of the fact that she is 14 and probably struggling to see over the dash and touch the pedals at the same time. How is Kyoka the driver. So.
Confirmed can drive:
Kunikida. He's shown driving multiple times as well. He probably has his license and everything. He still takes the train and taxies so I'm guessing he doesn't own a car.
Kyoka. She does not have her license but she's who they put behind the wheel when Kunikida is down or not around.
Ranpo. Of all people. Shown to be able to drive rather well in chapter 79. I'm becoming convinced this is why he doesn't know how to take the train - he drives literally everywhere.
Higuchi. Shown driving home. Probably the character who drives the most if it's part of her usual commute.
Haruno. Seen driving, is explicitly handed the keys in fact.
Ango: Seen driving (poor thing).
Teruko: Seen driving. Probably has a license since they're not big on breaking laws. (But then they weren't on a public road).
Steinbeck: Can drive in places other than Japan. Rammed his truck directly into a very obvious poll in Japan.
Mori? This is unclear. He gets into what would be the passenger side of the car that explodes, but it might have been an American car. Pretty sure it was supposed to be an American car actually. There's no logo but it doesn't seem like there was a chauffeur and he moves like he's reaching for the wheel. Also it's really old and square in the manga.
Chuuya: Flies for the most part but drives a motorcycle in Dead Apple. Not sure if I feel this is canon or not.
Tachihara. Seen driving a scooter. I guess I'll allow it.
Can drive but shouldn't:
Dazai. Apparently this is brought up in a light novel. He drives with Kunikida, implying he has a license, but apparently launched the car into something. He's called a 'bad driver' but I suspect he just needed the thing he flew the car into dead right then. May actually be a very good driver and just lazy.
Driving status unknown:
Tanizaki: Shown at the controls of a helicopter but never a car? Those aren't the same thing so I don't want to say he can drive but apparently he can fly.
Poe: Also can almost definitely drive. Can change out engines. I'm convinced he was driving the truck the agency members were hiding in during the cannibalism arc but I have no proof. Has not been seen behind a wheel.
Fitzgerald: I can't imagine him not knowing how to drive just for sports cars reasons but I also can't imagine him driving when he actually needs to go anywhere.
Fyodor: Travels pretty far a lot, seems to walk though?? It's unquestionable that he could drive a car if asked, but would he? Is he legally allowed to? We may never know.
Kajii: Driving a train like a maniac doesn't count.
Hirotsu: Travels pretty far pretty often. Could be taking trains.
Katai: Doesn't go anywhere
Natsume: Cats around
Akutagawa: Also flies. Shown walking when Higuchi was driving. Probably can't drive.
Gin: Also shown walking.
Jouno: Probably can't drive legally but could maybe drive in a pinch. Jury is still out.
Fukuzawa: Because both Haruno and Ranpo seem to be regular drivers and Fukuzawa is only ever shown walking even when it's logistically improbable I'm becoming increasingly convinced he can't drive.
Kenji, Yosano, Oda, Kouyou, Q, Hawthorn, Margret, Louisa, Melville, Lucy, Mark Twain, Fukuchi, Tecchou, Sigma, Gogol: can't say one way or another.
Can't drive won't drive:
Atsushi will literally let Kyoka drive rather than take the wheel himself.
Naomi hands Haruno the keys to their getaway car and I feel like she'd drive if she could so she goes here.
Oguri: I think he'd have a heart attack if he had to drive for more than 3 minutes. I could be wrong. Shown having a chauffeur though.
Lovecraft.
(About the brother!atsushi) aRE YOU READING MY MIND MISS?! Because that has been on my mind for MONTHS. TYSM For writing it was amazing!! If you don't mind, may I request (if requests are open) atsushi, still an older brother, but with a sister that's 10-13 yrs old? It's totally fine if you don't wanna do it. Keep up the good stories, ily mwuah!
*sobs* you’re so kind thank youu 🤧🤧
i wrote this a bit differently i hope that’s okay anon! at first i planned for this to be mainly abt atsushi and the reader, but i decided to add in relationship hcs with the agency bc i ran out of ideas
if you guys liked this don’t worry! im planning a special part two for this one so be the look out for it hehe
Tumblr media
atsushi with a tween! sister
ft. the armed detective agency
like in my baby sister hcs, you’re still the most important thing to him period
the two of you got picked up by dazai and kunikida when he was 18 (obviously) and when you were 12
for a 12 year old, you were a bit small bc of malnourishment (which makes atsushi feel so bad) so both dazai and kunikida thought you were a bit younger than you actually were
they assumed you were about 9-10ish
you and atsushi both share a favorite food !! chazuke :)
so when kunikida treated the two of you, he made sure you got more bowls bc like i mentioned above, he feels really bad that you were malnourished and under weight
(don’t bring this up but kunikida felt bad too hehe)
when dazai went with your brother to the warehouse, you were with kunikida
imagine the surprise of the other ada members when kunikida came in with a little girl dressed in rags that popped out from behind him
kenji was the one who vocalized his thoughts
“kunikida-san you have a daughter?! wow! i didn’t know that! :D”
when you found out your brother was a tiger, you were a bit concerned but you were actually kind of excited
you were even more excited when you found out the two of you were going to be taken in by the agency
anything was better than the stupid orphanage
and besides!
you got a tiger for an older brother and a bunch of other super powered agents to take care of you! who could want anything else?
at your age, you’re very impressionable and can be influenced easily so atsushi makes sure to teach you more in depth of good morals and the importance of kindness
his heart swells with pride and relief when he catches you being kind to others
pride bc he’s proud that even after all the two of you have gone through, you still ended up being a good kid and having a bright view of the world
and relief bc he hasn’t failed as a big brother
pfftt like he could ever fail
but please, from time to time reassure him that he’s perfect and the only big brother that you’d ever want bc he rlly needs that kind of validation
with his salary and savings, he tries to buy nice things for you
what a sweetheart 🥺
he saw you eyeing that one dress at a store window? fast forward abt a week and half and it’s inside a pretty gift bag for you
you wanted to try that dessert from the nice bakery? that’s dessert after dinner at one point
but other than buying you things, he sets money aside for you
like all the time
(y/n), here have this, you might need it”
“but nii-san you just gave me—”
“take it”
#1 spoiler
also your #1 confidant and source of physical affection
you tell him anything and everything (except crushies and those kinds of things)
atsushi loves it when you talk abt your day and he can see the big smile on your face and the sparkle in your eyes
it gives him the strength to keep going 😖😖
the two of you aren’t as touch starved as you’d probably think, but that’s only bc the two of you had each other
in your opinion, no one can match the hugs of your big brother
and it got even better bc YAYY he has tiger arms now ٩(◕‿◕)۶
if you ask, he’d carry you around too hehe
you also get nightmares quite often so he’ll always be there ready to calm you down, talk if you need to, and rock you back to sleep
god i love him 🤧🤧
atsushi will do everything in his power to protect you and make sure you get to grow up happy, supported, and loved
port mafia attack? oop he’s already taking you to the nearest escape route
someone is starting to harass you? they just got suckered punched into the next week
you want to go out to have some fun? he’ll go ask the president for a day off
you’re not feeling well? he’ll take another day off and take care of you
whatever you want to do, he’ll do it with you! (as long as it’s within reason)
will always be your #1 supporter! and he’s the president of your fan club hehe
he loves you so so much and will do anything for you; your life and happiness will always be more important to him
you are his reason to keep going
agency head canons !!
atsushi is your big brother, but kunikida is most definitely some sort of father figure
everyone can see it
except kunikida of course
kunikida scolds you lightly if he thinks your manners need work or if you make a mess in the agency
you listen to him of course and in turn as some sort of a reward, he’ll give you pieces of stationary
he always gives you the nice, good quality kind and you’re over the moon
atsushi adores it when you come running to him showing your new notebook or fountain pen and blabbering what you’re going to do with it
sometimes it isn’t even as a reward for being a good child; he’ll just give it to you and he’ll say smth like “i noticed you’ve used up your last notebook quite quickly, so here’s another one” or “did you run out of ink? here have this then”
he usually has a soft spot for children in general, but he most definitely has a soft spot (or a thousand) for you
yosano is kind of like a motherly figure to you
she gives you the guidance a mother should and goes on shopping trips with you!
atsushi always gets dragged along by you, but he thinks it’s worth it seeing you look so happy
yosano being a doctor also tries to teach the things you should know, or things that would be helpful to you
she’ll teach you the basics of cooking, sewing, how to treat a cold/fever, etc
also gives you excellent advice 1000% of the time
“remember (y/n)-chan if someone hurts you come tell me and then i’ll chop them into—”
“yOSANO-SENSEI DONT TELL HER THAT—”
fukuzawa is like a father to most in the agency but you see him more as a grandfather figure
bi weekly tea and gossip sessions hehe
along with cat talk!
most of the time though, it’s just you talking and him listening to you, but the two of you enjoy it nonetheless
“and then kunikida-san ended up crashing into a pole and dazai-san started to laugh at him and i did too because it was really funny but we ended up getting scolded—”
“hmm i see...”
he’ll let you stay in his office as he fills out paperwork; you’re usually doodling or drawing in your notebooks
sometimes he’ll meditate and you’ll join him, but 4/7 times you’d fall asleep
you always wake up with a blanket over you
dazai is like a cool but a highly concerning and kind of high maintenance uncle
frequently takes you out with him when he ditches work
walks in the park, eating at uzumaki so he has the excuse of treating you so he doesn’t have to pay his tab avoiding kunikida and sometimes chuuya and akutagawa, all that fun stuff
also tries to not talk abt suicide in front of you especially if it’s just the two of you alone
he knows that you mean the world to his pupil and that said pupil would probably hate him for putting suicide inside your brain
he teaches you random but useful things like how to pick a lock, how to steal kunikida’s notebook if you’re looking for some information, how to sweet talk your way out of things, etc.
is also the one to tell you that if you ever get a significant other to introduce them to the agency first
he always wants all of your gossip; some of them work pretty well for blackmail
“dazai-san! dazai-san! did you know that kunikida-san lost his glasses and he was looking for them for nearly an hour when he was just holding them the entire time??”
“woah really (y/n)-chan?! hey hey can you say it again into this recording device so kunikida-kun would believe me when i tell him—”
always ends up giving kunikida a heart attack when he says that you’ve been with him all day
ranpo is also like a cool but a highly concerning and kind of high maintenance uncle
will share some of his snacks, but don’t push it or you might not get anything at all
loves it when you compliment him
if you tagged along with him and your brother on a case, he will show off to impress you
“...and that’s how the crime happened”
“UWAHH RANPO-SAN YOU’RE SO COOL”
atsushi is lowkey and kunikida is highkey stressed that ranpo’s eating habits will rub off on you
“ne (y/n)-chan do you wanna try this highly caffeinated drink and this concerning amount of sugar filled snack?”
“can i really?!”
“rANPO-SAN NO—”
ranpo definitely does stuff like that on purpose
the tanizakis are like siblings to you!
a weird set of siblings but siblings nonetheless
the two of them adore you and think you’re precious
atsushi definitely knows how to do your hair whether it’s long or short but he got even better at it when he asked the two
hehe braid trains are definitely a thing + kyouka and kenji (and maybe even dazai)
sometimes you have sibling swap days
you’re with junichiro for most of the day and atsushi is with naomi
strange i know
each of the tanizaki siblings try to make it fun bc they know that the two of you did not at all have a happy upbringing
junichiro likes spending time with you by taking you out to different places that naomi likes to frequent
like the mall, different stores and restaurants, the park, places like those
naomi does the same thing with atsushi so if you ever bump into them, you go out and eat together :)
besides atsushi, the next one in line who spoils you the most would be junichiro (and yosano & kunikida both coming in at a close third)
he honestly can’t help it; you remind him of how naomi was when she was younger
and besides
he’s always been a sucker when it came to the happiness of a little sister
“would you really buy this for me junichiro-san?!”
“of course! don’t worry about it” :)
wanna talk abt boys/girls/celebrity crushes things like that? naomi is your girl
you feel a bit embarrassed to go talking to yosano or your brother abt that and kyouka does not know a thing abt them either
“uwahh naomi-san look at all these people in this magazine! they look so good!”
“right?! but of course onii-sama is still the best—”
you get along with kenji and kyouka quite nicely being roughly the same age as them; they’re also like siblings!
just pure, wholesome vibes from the three of you
you’re over the moon when she finds out that kyouka is staying with you and your brother
atsushi is twice as happy seeing you talk your mouth off and finally having a girl around your age to talk to
“do you think demon snow can change how she looks?”
“hmm... im not sure...”
you and kenji talk abt anything and everything
he even teaches you how to take care of plants!
sometimes the two of you are kind of in the same boat bc you don’t know much abt yokohoma being stuck in the orphanage and kenji doesn’t know much abt cities in general
“wait where are we again kenji-san?”
“ah we’re close to the ports! but im not really sure how close because i don’t know what the symbols on this sign mean”
“don’t worry! neither do i!”
bonus things!
yosano was kind of too late teaching you abt you know what
“NII-SAN IM BLEEDING IN BETWEEN MY LEGS”
you’re sobbing in the agency’s bathroom and atsushi is panicking trying to get you to open the door
“Y/N?! H-HOLD ON LET ME GET YOSANO SENSEI”
ranpo overhears and cackles making everyone around him confused
suddenly atsushi bursts in the agency basically on the verge of tears rambling incoherent sentences abt the bathroom, you, and blood
it just clicked for everybody in the room
(im going to pretend that kenji has sisters back home so that atsushi is the only one who remain oblivious here hehe)
atsushi is genuinely confused and sort of concerned that no one is freaking out with him
yosano waves her hand saying smth like that she’d take care of it and junichiro pulls atsushi to the side to talk to him
fast forward like half and hour and dazai and ranpo are cackling on the looks of both of your faces
honestly not sure who’s more traumatized, you or your brother
“why does this have to happen” :(
“ne ne (y/n)-chan!~ you’re too young but at some point you’re not going to have it!”
“uwahh really dazai-san?” :D
“yeah! but first you have to have ANFK—”
next thing you know your ears are being covered by your brother and dazai is thrown across the room by kunikida
you know
the normal
you’re twelve and have never gone to school, but the agency takes care of that
it’s too dangerous to go to school so they teach you what’s necessary and whatever else they can
kunikida takes care of math (obviously)
yosano takes care of science/biology/anatomy/health (whatever you wanna call it)
ranpo even dragged poe to help you with english
atsushi even got lucy to help you out with english too!
as tanizaki and naomi used to be students, they give you their old work books and they try to teach you all the other subjects
sometimes kyouka and kenji are there learing with you too!
hello! can you do a ada!dazai x ada!fem reader? like, what would be their relationship be like (going on missions, dates, etc.) you can disregard this if you want, thank you! 💖
❥ Dazai Dating Headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*slams a door open and throws a table then stands on it*
Let’s get into it ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)👌
(There is a very little spicy part, lovelies :D)
ANYWAYS
Backs hugs~
He likes surprise hugging you from behind and nuzzling his face into your neck
It’s also a sign of trust
So it makes him happy and content that you trust him and feel safe with him
Cuddling on the ADA couch is a M U S T
Why?
Because he said so
Do you get scolded by Kunikida?
Yes ma’am
He likes to have you on top of him and nuzzling into his chest
Plays with your hair while cuddling
If you play with his hair
Then he will MELT
Like it’s literally his weak point
Sometimes he just goes to you
Sits beside you and lays his head
Grabs your hand and places it on his head
“Belladonna can you play with my hair?”
He is protective of you in missions
Like he knows you are capable and stuff but
Come on :(
You are his baby, his belladonna
Of course he will worry about you
I see Dazai as the type of person to take you to gardens and cafes
That kind of stuff
Maybe an amusement park if you guys feel freaky
Will totally not scream while riding the rollercoaster “THIS ISNT HOW I WANT TO DIE”
But yeah, he doesn’t want to look like a pussy to you despite screaming 🥰
Now speaking of emotions
When Dazai finally tells you about his past is probably 5-6 months into the relationship
Nothing could be built well if it doesn’t have a good foundation, right?
Without trust in a relationship then it falls
And he wouldn’t want that cause he just loves you that much
So when he opens up and in your arms
Hugging you tightly while hiding his face in your chest
“Please don’t leave me...”
He was so scared that you would leave him after what you know what he did
So when life is being such a sweetheart to him and you accept him nonetheless
Then you B e T
he will never let you go and will always make you feel appreciated
I think Dazai would be good comfort
Like most of the times Atsushi has a problem he asks him
So I think he will be great to help you as well
He would sometimes intentionally do stupid shit so he can see you smile or laugh
Suicide attempts slowly come down to zero
Because he finds a reason to live
That being you
Sometimes imagines how you both would be as parents 🥺
But he is scared about having a baby but being pregnant isn’t our topic here so let’s concentrate
Kunikida supports your relationship
But
“DAZAI AND Y/N NO PDA IN THE OFFICE”
Ya know
Speaking of PDA
This man has absolutely no shame 🤩
Will make out of you in front of anyone
Specially Chuuya so he can flex the fact that he has a lover and chu chu does not
Tells you stories about annoying the shit out of Chuuya 😚
Btw
He loves seeing you get along with Atsushi
Just
You two are his favorite people
You didn’t hear that from me though
You know how everyone says that this man is horneh as FACK?
I personally believe that he is more into the romantic or like soft actions
Like even making love he would do it while reminding you that he loves you and appreciates you
After all it’s called “making love”
And he has been through a lot so caring and loving actions is what I believe he craves
He adores your eyes
“An eye is the window to one’s soul”
He likes staring at them
He can basically see the love you hold for him
It makes him feel important and wanted
And he wants to give you just as much if not more amount of love
Gets you cute letters sometimes
Like
When he goes to a mission in the morning and you are still asleep you will find a
“Hey love! I had a mission early so I had to go and leave your beautiful embrace :( I will annoy the hell out of Kunikida-kun as revenge >:) I hope you have a wonderful morning and I love you Belladonna!”
Oh yeah I forgot to mention this but
Flirting is a 24/7 thing
And of course you guys know that
Btw he stops flirting with women cause he isn’t no player 👌
Now onto the thing before the last
Jealousy
Whoever dazai is jealous of
They will go through hell and back but without you noticing
If it’s someone who is just taking too much of your time
Then he will whine like a little bitch until he gets you attention and if he doesn’t get it then he will hug you and never leave your side like a koala
If it’s someone flirting
Then he will hug you from behind and lay his head on your shoulder
“Belladonna who is this?”
Kisses your cheek and shows signs that you are clearly taken
If said person who is flirting isn’t getting the hint or is just being an asshole
Then Dazai will make them shit their pants
A hand on the shoulder there, an empty look and glare here and some very friendly words
Now they won’t even gLANce at you
If god forbids someone hurts you then he will scare the living daylights out of them
“Are you the person who hurt my dearest?”
Yeah they ain’t living and if they do then they will be conflicted
Go easy on them dazai 🙄
ANYWAYS
yeah so basically he loves you and trusts with his laif ( ˘ ³˘)♥︎
Recap on the Order of the Clocktower, suppositions on the real plan, and predictions on the future of the arc
Well! After months of fights that led to very little and an almost nonstop series of cliffhangers, it seems like finally we're entering the final stage of this arc. And in the last two numbers I noticed ... something doesn't quite add up.
Tumblr media
Let's make a brief recap on the Decay of Angels and the newly revealed last part of their plan. So, unlike what initially thought, the last part of their plan wasn't 'mostly terrorist activity', it was a goddamn vampire apocalypse that brought several nations to their knees in a handful of days.
This led the world leaders to decide that Fukuchi's speech of several chapters ago was right on the money, the only thing that can face such a catastrophe is an international army of which he will be given complete control. Moreover, to drive the point home ...
Tumblr media
They deem fit to give him this. Another extra powerful weapon in the hands of exactly one person? Who can multiply the strenght of every weapon he's given? With no countermeasure if he gets out of control? What is these people's problem?!
By the way, take a moment to appreciate how Fukuchi got something that allows him to destroy the individual soldier's free will and control all of their actions, something he felt already happened to him and the trauma of which gives him motivation. He doesn't spare a thought on the fact that they will suffer just as much as he did, he can only think of his own pain.
Tumblr media
So, Ranpo makes an observation that really shouldn't need a superior intelligence to be made: that with this trick, the Decay of Angels will have its goal served on a silver platter. World domination. Again, take a moment to appreciate how Fukuchi, who expressed anarchist beliefs and just the chapter before gave a neat speech on how politicians who order others around without any risk to themselves suck, coughed up a solution that was even more authocratic. Maybe all the 'you're the hero everyone depends on' talk got a little to his head.
But ... for what I've understood ... this is not the Decay of Angels's plan, this is Fukuchi's plan. If the inconsistences for him can be attributed to hypocrisy, for all the other four people in his group it makes even less sense.
Let's take a look at his four comrades, from the one less likely to subscribe to such a plan to the most likely:
• Bram Stoker: he's literally being threatened with death if he doesn't comply. One of the first things he says is protesting that he swore not to add any more people to his kin, but Fukuchi forces him. Once he complies, he express little interest for whatever is going on around him, everything he wants is a radio to pass the time in his coffin. World domination? Seems like an hard pass for him.
• Sigma. While fanon commonly portrays him as the 'good and cute not-really-a-villain', because he has a sympathetic backstory and shows kindness to the clients and staff of the casino, I'd like to point out that he's actually fairly amoral. He's in there because the Decay offered him a home; it makes sense that he's like that after being abused and aware of his being different from the rest of the world for all of his short life, but he still took part in a terrorist plan. Moreover, he was the one to send the casino's clients against the Hunting Dogs to hinder them - regular civilians against the very best of the army. It was actually Teruko who took upon herself and Tachihara not to harm civilians no matter what; what guarantee did Sigma have that she would have done that? What if she had listened to Tachi instead, who wanted to retaliate? Caring to clients and staff, but only up to a certain point. Even when he gave Atsushi that information, it was because of the latter's kindness towards him, not for some moral reason. Sigma is ultimately out only for himself. But this also means that he isn't really involved in the Decay's grand plan: he wants a home and that's it, tutto il resto fottesega.
• Gogol. Now we're getting a little closer. But not without incurring in another contradiction: Gogol hates restraints and orders, anything that gives a boundary to a human's actions. He detests even internal restraints, given by morality and his own sense of guilt. Why would someone like that partecipate in a plan that strips human beings of their own free will, and traps the world under the control of a lone person? Well, it's just speculation because we haven't seen him in ages, but I think it's part of his tendency to destroy himself in the name of freedom. He kills people to defy his own sense of guilt; he wants to kill Fyodor to destroy his desire to be understood and accepted; he collaborates in Fukuchi's plan to destroy his own beliefs in freedom, the thing that more than anything keeps him chained to a certain course of action. In his debut, he described the Decay of Angels's plan as pure evil and thus worth supporting; it's possible that he wasn't saying that under the common definition of evil, but in his own book, the anathema to Gogol's beliefs.
• Fyodor. Who has already stated a personal, very different goal: to acquire the reality-altering Book and make a world devoid of Ability users. All he needs for thar is wiping out the Ability-based organizations in Yokohama so he'll have a free pass, which is not exactly a small thing, but he doesn't need world domination for what he wants. So, why was he involved in such a plan? Well, this is a point I'll expand more on below.
I've already made another post on how the Decay of Angels are an extremely unlikely group and it's almost surprising they managed to work along enough to make this much damage. It's becoming even more evident now: Fukuchi is the only one really interested in the organization's goal.
The other one who gets closest is Fyodor, who, as we have seen, doesn't really care for that; but he gained what he wanted as an accessory. He wanted to get rid of Ability-users organizations in the city, and now the ADA members can't show themselves without getting attacked by the police, the Port Mafia has most of his top members turned into mindless vampires, and the Special Ability Department is about to be overruled by Fukuchi. Moreover, a Fukuchi with absolute power would be able to hand him the Book. Mission accomplished!
But there is this little detail: the Order of the Clocktower, those with the authority to hand Fukuchi the 'One Order'. There is very little known about them (I'm going from the wikia here): appearently, their purpose is to protect the British royal family, their members are Ability users of a terrific level, and they were responsible for chasing Mimic out of Europe after they gave the order for the attack who labelled them as war criminals in the first place.
Tumblr media
Come se questo non li rendesse già infinitamente più cani di quelli che danno il titolo all'opera, in Dead Apple they contact Ango to inform him that, to prevent the spread of Shibusawa's fog, they sent an incineration-Ability user to destroy Yokohama (quickly, native readers of British/European literature! Any suggestion for who this person could be! I could come up with Cecco Angiolieri, Aldo Palazzeschi and Gabriele D'Annunzio, but I really doubt it could be any of them, nobody ever cares about Italian literature besides Dante. Your loss).
So, this can mean two things: either they are in contact with the Japanese government and acted with their agreement, or they have enough power to overrule it. Personally, I think the former is more probable.
Anyways, they aren't irrationally genocidal. Once Atsushi &Co. fix the situation, the attack is called off, even if their leader, Agatha Christie, complains about not having the scent of a burning nation to go with her tea. So, their leader: it's not the first time she shows up in the story.
Tumblr media
She appeared all the way back in chapter 12, the same that also introduced Fitzgerald and Fyodor, in a meeting to discuss the failure of the bounty on Atsushi. Which tells us two very important things: first, as the other two were out for the Book, it's highly probable that she's after it as well; secondly, that she works with Fyodor, the very same person who orchestrated the plan that should get the One Order, a weapon under the control of Agatha's organization, in the hands of Fukuchi.
Now, Fukuchi is an interesting one under this point of view, because he wasn't even implied in the Chapter 12 Conference. We have seen that Fyodor likes to keep his fingers in multiple pies when it comes to razing the poor Yokohama to the ground: first he hacked the Moby Dick to make sure it fell; then he helped Shibusawa with the aforementioned fog incident; then he acted with his own organization with the Cannibalism plot; lastly for now, the Decay of Angels. As long as he gets to eliminate the Ability users, he doesn't care who he's working with.
Insomma, è 'na zoccola di nome e di fatto.
But we have also seen that Fyodor isn't above backstabbing his 'colleagues': he ignored the fate of Fitzgerald after he fell and took the opportunity to take the Guild's assets for himself, and he directly killed Shibusawa to turn him in the Singularity and send him to get killed by Atsushi. Note how Shibu got off even worse than Fitz: he wasn't in the Chapter 12 Conference, and it's likely he didn't know about the plan to incinerate Yokohama while Fyodor did, being acquainted with Agatha. It's even possible that was the whole point of his involvement in the operation: give her an excuse to attack, while he got an opportunity to cause the deaths of Ability users on the side.
My point is: you know how Fukuchi was not in the Chapter 12 Conference? And he just put himself in a position where if he is found out, things will have consequences on an international level, now that the Order got involved? And do you also remember how Fyodor mused to himself that he didn't make the perfect plan required by the Decay of Angels, because that would have been boring?
Tumblr media
Le mie previsioni per quest'arco sono: Fukuchi è una tigre di cartapesta, e si ritroverà la sua super spada ficcata di prepotenza su per il culo.
A very faithful translation of the above: it is very possible that Fukuchi was set up to fail from the very beginning; or at the very least, Fyodor was keeping his plans with Agatha as backup in the case the Decay of Angels didn't work out .
When the ADA will defeat Fukuchi (because no one of his colleagues will lift a finger to help), they will once again play straight into their enemies's hands. Maybe they will 'officially' remain as dangerous terrorists, and then the Order of the Clocktower will have to intervene against them. Or they will actually rehabilitate themselves, and they will be once again celebrated as heroes while the Hunting Dogs will fall in disgrace - what with their leader being secretly a terrorist leaders, suddenly these very powerful people will become unreliable - and the goverment will make an horrible figure, what with persecuting innocent people while being played like fiddles by the real criminals; surely, this situation will call for someone more reliable to establish order in Japan, such as, perhaps, an intervention from an highly esteemed European Ability organization.
How things will proceed from then on, it's anyone's guess. It is possible that Agatha will use her power to have Dazai and Fedka the Convict released from jail, though why would she do that is up in air. Maybe it would be more convenient for her to leave such an unreliable ally where she can see him, and she has never met Dazai as far as we know, so she probably isn't much interested in him. This is as far as my prediction abilities come.
Thanks to anyone who bothered to read my ramblings!
"Hey... are you okay?" Kenji asked me a few days later, noticing the scowl on my face and realizing that I had been tapping my nail on my desk repeatedly for the last fifteen minutes. "You seem... pissed?"
I grunted, closing my eyes and slowly taking a deep breath. "I'm okay, Kenji. Just having a bad day." The others shared looks with each other, but chose not to pry. The frown on my face never left, my fists clenched as my blood continued to boil.
Then that all went away, when I felt a gentle hand against the back of my neck. I looked over at Dazai, who had lazily rolled himself in his chair over to me. He grinned. "I could see the steam coming from your ears!"
His hand never left my neck, moving until his fingers loosely wrapped around the column of my throat. Strangely enough, my anger had completely gone away when he touched me, and it felt nice to finally breathe. "With the day I'm having..." I sighed, the whole world seemingly melting away, Dazai's thumb stroking along my jaw.
Kunikida was clearly unimpressed, the man gritting his teeth. Atsushi looked shocked, his face tinged red while Ranpo and Kenji just touched their own necks gently.
"Does she like to get choked?"
"Who knows, man."
"Hey, I know what will make you feel better," Dazai suggested and I tilted my head, waiting for him to continue. He leaned in and would have kissed me if it weren't for a book smacking right into the side of Dazai's head.
"Do that on your own time! We have a schedule!" Kunikida fumed while I quickly turned around to cover my face, simply to muffle down my obnoxious laughter.
"Oh, dude!"
"Kunikida! What was that for!"
"Public indecency!"
Dazai rubbed his head, whining from the pain while I just giggled behind my hands. Dazai almost looked betrayed at me laughing at him and I just shrugged my shoulders. "Hey, that's what you get for trying to play grab ass."
I purposely ignored Dazai's pouty face for the rest of the day, the man clearly upset that he didn't get to kiss me. I shook my head, glaring at him from across the office while threateningly pointing my pen at him.
"Work, dammit."
"I don't wanna! Bella, don't be so mean!"
I fixed him another glare before going back to my work, finishing up the final report for the last case we were on. After going through and making sure it was perfect, I saved and emailed it to the President, just as the door to the office slammed opened.
"He's gone!"
"Keiko?! What the he- Keiko, what's wrong?"
I stood up from my desk, my best friend standing before me in a frazzled state. She looked extremely distressed, tears falling down her face. I rushed to her, the woman collapsing into my arms as we both fell to our knees.
"He's gone!" she exclaimed before she started to sob into my chest. "He's gone! He's gone! He's gone!"
"Keiko..." I looked up at the others with wide eyes, them looking on with alarm. I turned back to Keiko, rubbing on her back as she continued to sob.
Tumblr media
Taichi was killed. He was found in an alleyway with multiple stab wounds. Keiko had received a call from the police after his identity was discovered, the detectives revealing the tragic news to her.
"I'm so sorry, Keiko..." I said to her softly, sitting with her in one of the small areas of the office, separated by simple dividers. "... how the hell did this happen? We just saw him last night when he dropped you off at my place..."
Keiko had finished crying, but the terrible sadness in her eyes was a clear indication of how devastated she was. I clenched my fists, feeling my anger from earlier building up again.
"I'm going to have to make my statement," Keiko said softly, chewing on her bottom lip.
"Do you want me to go with you to the station?" I asked and she shook her head.
"No... it's okay..."
"The thing is, you are also one of the last people to see him alive," Kunikida spoke up, standing by with Dazai and Atsushi. "You'll have to give your account too..."
Sighing deeply, I absentmindedly reached under my skirt, pausing when I didn't feel my knife against my thigh where it usually was. I gritted my teeth, shaking my head to myself before I went back to rubbing on Keiko's back in an attempt to comfort her.
Soon, Keiko and I left the Agency and headed on over to the police station. We gave our accounts of the night before when we last saw Taichi, us talking separately with a different agent.
"Now you know, Mr. Kamiya was in the Port Mafia," the agent said and I nodded. "And they have quite a bit of history with your little organization."
I didn't like the condescending tone in his voice, but I kept my cool. "Of course, but none of us have anything to do with this man's murder, and you have no evidence proving otherwise."
He just rolled his eyes at me. "Well, this is all we need. You're free to go."
I nodded before quietly making my way out of the interview room. I met with Keiko, who looked like she had been crying again and I pulled her into a comforting hug. "It's okay. This will be over soon."
Later on, I found myself back at the Agency, Keiko choosing to go home, despite my protests. My head was buried in my arms, not moving as I felt someone put their hand on my head, lightly scratching my scalp.
"Looks like the police will keep on investigating Taichi's murder," Dazai said and I peeked one eye out to find him leaning against my desk. "Thing is, I'm sure the Port Mafia will also be conducting their own investigation. Ohh, this is gonna get interesting~"
"So is it better if we stay out of this, then?" I asked, sitting up in my chair. "I mean, unless we're asked... we don't have to touch this."
Dazai regarded me for a moment, a mysterious smile growing on his face before he just threw his hands up nonchalantly. "I get it, you were friends with the guy."
"Not really," I corrected him immediately. "Keiko is my friend."
"Ohhhhh," Dazai just hummed, tapping his forefinger on his chin. "Well anywho, the police are gonna have their hands full if the Port Mafia really gets involved! It wouldn't hurt to help, right?"
I hesitated, a small smile soon growing on my face as I nodded. "Sure. Let's start tomorrow."
Tumblr media
"How about tonight instead?!" Dazai asked with a cheerful smile while I just glared at him angrily, the two of us now standing in the middle of the crime scene.
"Why do I even bother believing a word you say?" I hissed at him, attempting to kick the man but he quickly side stepped me. I gritted my teeth. "Ugh, plus it's already dark, Dazai. It's gonna be harder to find any evidence." Indeed, the only light we were getting was from the full moon up ahead, and the shitty lights above the side door of one of the buildings. "Are we even allowed to be here?"
Dazai simply nodded his head. "Of course, we were assigned to this case, afterall."
"... you told me the police were keeping it," I said, eyebrows twitching in annoyance. Was he serious?!
Dazai just smiled and threw his hands up. "Guess I was mistaken," he hummed and I sighed deeply, rubbing my temples.
"Okay so... what now?" I asked, finally looking around the crime scene. It was obviously taped off and Taichi's body was removed. All there was left was a giant stain of blood, which I now looked at with a worried face.
"Just by the nature of the crime alone, we can easily say it was a crime of passion. If this was a local gang or rival, he would have been shot, or even jumped and beaten to death. Official word is, he was stabbed over sixty times," Dazai explained, standing beside me and staring at the blood. "There is no sign of the murder weapon, no other physical evidence besides Taichi's dead body and blood. We'll have to wait for forensics to give us their final word, but I can tell... this might not be so easy to crack."
I nodded solemnly, my fists clenched tightly.
"Or... will it?"
I took in a deep breath before turning and sending Dazai a sheepish smile. "Well, we got our work cut out for us, huh."
Dazai chuckled softly. "Yeah, but that's what makes it fun."
"So Dazai," I started, crossing my arms over my chest. "I have a question."
"I may have an answer."
"Have you ever killed anyone before?"
Silence followed after my question and I turned to look at the man. His hands were in his pockets, a weird smile on his face. "I have. Quite a few."
For some reason, the answer didn't shock me as much as it probably should. "How do you sleep at night?"
More silence, before Dazai stood before me. I looked up at him, heart thudding when I saw that same dim look in his eyes. His lips curled up and he leaned in, making me hold my breath as he whispered.
"Like a baby."
My breath hitched in my throat, eyes going wide. I licked my lips nervously, nodding my head slowly. "I see..." Just... wow.
"You know, I could have gone without seeing your ugly face, Dazai."
A look of distaste grew on Dazai's face as the newcomer came sauntering up to us. He wore black, a familiar hat resting upon a familiar head of red hair. Blue eyes stared daggers into my coworker, mouth curled into a displeased snarl.
"Ah, Chuuya! It is a small world, after all," Dazai sang, the glare in his eyes not meeting the jovial tone of his voice.
Chuuya scoffed. "I thought you'd be fucking dead by now, but of course, you always love to piss me off."
"'Cause it's so much fun!"
The two men clearly didn't like each other, but that was the least of my concerns. All I could do was stare at Chuuya in shock. Of course, Taichi was one of his subordinates, he would want to find out who his killer was and get retribution. That was just how the Port Mafia worked.
I gulped, carefully trying to back away from the two. They could stand there and bicker with each other all they want. I had to get out of here before-
"Oh wait, meet my new friend!" Dazai wrapped his arm around my neck, wrestling me to his side effortlessly as I tried to break free. He knew I was trying to escape and made sure that didn't happen.
"Hey, let me go!" I hissed, not pleased with being pulled into a damn chokehold.
"Not until you meet my old friend!"
Chuuya growled. "We're not friends, damn traitor!"
Traitor? I grew confused, eyebrows pinched even as I fought against Dazai's hold. Chuuya narrowed his eyes when he finally got a good look at me.
"Hey... do I know you?"
Crap. "Uh..." I laughed sheepishly, Dazai now confused as he looked back and forth between the two of us.
"You know each other?"
"W-well..."
"We met a few months ago," Chuuya spoke up, his eyes widening in realization before his eyes narrowed and he snarled.  "Knew you couldn't be trusted."
"Wait!" I exclaimed, making it out of Dazai's hold and holding my hands up to Chuuya. "I swear... I didn't even know about the ADA when we met. It was just as I said that night, I lost my job and was there to drink my pain away."
"Tch," Chuuya sounded, his eyes still narrowed. "And now you work with this traitorous bastard. Lucky you."
There was that word again.
"What do you mean by traitor?" I asked, at the same time Dazai spoke up.
"How the hell do you two know each other?"
Chuuya scoffed. "I fucked her."
I squeaked, Dazai's eyebrows raising.
"Interesting. I'm fucking her too."
I squeaked again, waving my hands wildly before either man could respond. "D-don't we have a murder to solve, huh?!"
It fell on deaf ears, the two men staring each other down, all before their eyes were on me and my trembling form.
"You know... I feel like we've been here before, Chuuya."
Said man snorted. "When you fucked my girls?"
"Like you haven't fucked mine?"
Okay, now I was confused. "Um... I don't understand..."
"Oh yeah!" Dazai exclaimed a bit too cheerfully, putting a hand on Chuuya's shoulder, earning a withering glare. "Chuuya and I go way back. Were the best of friends."
"No we weren't."
"We were partners! The best there was!"
"... tch."
Partners? What the hell did Dazai mean by partners? I looked between the two men, lips formed in a thin line. Then, the answer struck and my mouth fell open in shock. There was no fucking way... Dazai? I swallowed thickly, shaking my head for this was not the time or place to be thinking about this.
"Okay... I can only imagine just how deep this shit goes," I started, the men looking at me curiously. "But we have a murder to solve. Whatever... this," I gestured my hand between the two of them. "Is... it can wait. Y'all can make out or whatever later."
That was my attempt at breaking whatever tension there was, but I was the only one cackling when Dazai and Chuuya immediately protested.
"I will kill you!"
"That is not funny, bella!"
"Ugggh, I don't have the time for this. I should have known that the ADA would be investigating this, and that just pisses me off. You two should just stay out of my way," Chuuya said, hands in his coat pocket. "Though you... word is that you were one of the lasts who saw Taichi alive."
My heart dropped when Chuuya looked at me and I frowned. "And I told the police that I saw him when he dropped Keiko off at my apartment. There are cameras in the lobby that will show that I never left the apartment. We even ordered food in."
"Fuck. And there is no other evidence right now. No weapon, no hints of DNA. It's like the killer just vanished," Chuuya said to himself and I glanced at Dazai, seeing the amused look on his face.
"What if it was an ability user?" Dazai suggested. Chuuya gritted his teeth.
"Shut up! I don't need your help!"
"Really? Are you sure?" Dazai taunted the red head, quickly ducking when Chuuya swung his foot in a wide kick. Dazai didn't get hit, but the wall behind him took the damage, large cracks forming on the surface. I swallowed thickly. Just how strong was Chuuya?
"H-hey," I started nervously, foolishly getting between the two men before they could start a fight. "We're after the same goal, right? Why don't we just... work together?" The fierce glares I got made me shrink. "O-o-or! Or not! That's fine! Just don't fight!"
"Bella is right... fighting is so beneath me," Dazai said wistfully and I sighed deeply.
"Dazai, I'm being serious. This man was my best friend's boyfriend. I want to find his killer too."
"Just stay out of it," Chuuya growled. "This has nothing to do with either of you. The Port Mafia will handle this."
"Let's make it a race then." Both Chuuya and I were dumbfounded as we looked at Dazai, waiting for him to continue. "A competition to see who figures this out, the ADA or the Port Mafia."
"Dazai... what the hell?" I asked in disbelief, Chuuya stepped closer to him.
"What's the prize?"
Dazai smirked, raising a bandaged hand and pointing right to me. "Our bella."
My jaw dropped. "You're fucking kidding me?"
"No," Dazai answered rather seriously. "I'm not."
Chuuya is strangely quiet, his unreadable eyes now trained on me. I fidgeted under his gaze, looking away to find Dazai staring at me all the same. I shivered. I hated this; hated being part of such a stupid competition as a prize, and I hated that I fucking loved it. I screwed my eyes shut.
"Deal," Chuuya finally said and I gasped when I felt his familiar leather clad fingers cup my face, him moving my head to make me look at him. "Gotta say, I didn't expect to see you again, but I'm glad our paths have crossed a second time." I became extremely flustered and Chuuya smirked. "Tell me, Dazai. What was it like having my sloppy seconds?"
I gasped sharply with Dazai only laughing darkly, suddenly feeling his presence behind me. "Can't say it was too bad..." he answered and I just completely clocked out, breath hitching as I felt a bit embarrassed. And turned on. They knew exactly what to say to get me riled up.
"Okay, I'm leaving! It's late and I still haven't eaten dinner yet! Bye!" I was frantic trying to rush away from them as fast as I could. I didn't even turn back when Dazai called after me.
"See you tomorrow, bella!" Dazai chuckled softly, watching me disappear, hands stuffed in his pockets.
"A race? Really?" Chuuya asked incredulously, eyes piercing as he stared at his old partner.
"It will just make this all the more fun," Dazai hummed.
"You're a bastard," Chuuya scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Just stay out of my way. Taichi getting himself killed just ruined the investigation we had on him."
"Oh?" Dazai raised his eyebrows, amused. "Was he being a naughty boy?"
"Shut the fuck up, Dazai."
-End
Tumblr media
I have this headcanon that Dazai and Chuuya definitely stole each other's girls and even shared them and had threesomes when they were partners and ya'll CANNOT tell me otherwise.
dazai’s vision with atsushi and akutagawa
light spoiler warning!
theory that dazai put tension into atsushi and akutagawa's relationship on purpose possibly because that's what he had with chuuya, and to foster their eventual partnership.
dazai and chuuya started as enemies, and after trying to kill each other (plus a little emotional manipulation on dazai's part) and getting a common goal (furthering the mafia) they were highly successful as double black. besides both their immense combat and deduction skills plus complimenting abilities, they ran off of a semblance of reluctant trust that become second nature. they were forced to trust each other because of the situations around them.
dazai has generally only known dysfunctional relationships. the healthiest one he had imo, with odasaku, ended badly. his partner, chuuya, and the most efficient one in the lens of work and probably his closest relationship only lasted so long because of the mafia's need.
he also knew they were from different organizations and had a very different set of morals. when dazai tells akutagawa, "my new subordinate is far superior to you." (season 1, ep 9, 8:05) he goes out of his way to make akutagawa go after atsushi. to make them fight. and then the Guild Arc forces them to work together. to develop a ripped up form of trust because their abilities work better with each other. it's situational, just like dazai and chuuya's trust was.
dazai actually tells them, "you two are going to start fighting with your special abilities again." (season 3, ep 11, 12:08) when asked why, he says, "that's my plan. i'm going to have the two of you sneak into the enemy hideout together." atsushi insists that, "akutagawa's hatred for [him] is beyond reason." (season 3, ep 11, 12:55) and it is, because dazai made it that way. but akutagawa listens to dazai, because dazai's also made it that way. and the two of them want to save the fukuzawa and mori. they end up following dazai's plan to a t and fighting alongside each other pretty well.
we know that from the second dazai met atsushi, he wanted to see what akutagawa and atsushi could do together. i'm curious if he saw himself and chuuya in them. enemies that had abilities that worked better together.
besides his own curiosity, i wonder if he thought their partnership could be healing for akutagawa. the way dazai trained akutagawa was awful, traumatic, cruel. in the mafia relationships are defined by the hierarchy and strength which did play into dazai's harsh training methods. (this plays into how dazai showed akutagawa atsushi's strength) but dazai treats atsushi, his new subordinate, extraordinarily much better, even though there are still high stakes missions and risks. perhaps he doesn't treat atsushi well, but much better than akutagawa. atsushi gets forgiven for his mistakes.
when dazai met chuuya, especially evident in the fifteen arc, he's much more childish and comes out of his shell. and he got a partner. i wonder if dazai wanted to give akutagawa some of that. or give atsushi companionship from someone on par with his ability, trauma, and age. not necessarily out of kindness for the two of them, but perhaps almost pity or curiosity. then again, that could just be collateral of them partnering up and taking advantage of their abilities.
(anyways i could write circles around these characters i love them and this is all for now)
Did you know male cats have spines on their dicks?
Read on: AO3
"Do you have spines on your dick?"
He tries very hard to maintain a straight face as the jinko lifts his head slowly, revealing a very confused expression.
“What?” Atsushi blurts out, eyebrows pulling downward in bewilderment. “Why would you even—where did you even get that idea?”
Or: Akutagawa just really, really wants them to move to third base. He resorts to using a weird biological fact against Atsushi.
Starting note:
Hey guys. Biology student here. 100% not inventing this shit up. Male felines have dick spines because for some reason the females don't ovulate without getting their VJs shredded, which is why they're so fucking loud when having sex. That's a dramatized answer, but you get the point.
Akutagawa will be calling Atsushi "jinko" a lot in this fic, because imo I don't think Akutagawa refers to him using his real name even when it's just on his mind. They would have to be on Level 20 of romantic relationship before Akutagawa finally calls him by name. Not that you don't guys probably already know, but jinko = weretiger.
---
Fun fact: Did you know male cats have spines on their penises?
Akutagawa’s thumb freezes on his phone screen. He very nearly barks out a laugh which he hastily covers up by clearing his throat. Higuchi looks at him in question, looking ready to ask him the reason but Akutagawa just gives her a shake of his head.
Barbed penises? That’s interesting. He thinks to himself as he scrolls down, amused by the new discovery. There’s really only one person in mind who counts somewhat as a feline, and it’s none other than the jinko.
The jinko, whom he has been having an interesting relationship lately.
The arrangement Dazai set for them had been highly appalling at first, but no one can deny that they were indeed more powerful together. Which somehow led to the Port Mafia and the Armed Detective Agency's cooperative relationship, for the first time ever. And by "cooperative" it means that he and the jinko don’t attempt to kill each other every meeting and are willing enough to work together (reluctantly) on joint missions.
Which then further led to this and that. Heated arguments turned to annoyed banters, which turned to almost comfortable silences.
Which then turned to fierce make-out sessions, apparently. Post mission make-out sessions and grinding against each other in back alleys, specifically.
It is incredibly absurd, he admits readily to himself. Absurd in the way that of all the people he’d be doing such things, it had to be jinko, the supposed object of his hatred. But also, it was absurd in that it had been so easy. It’s almost as a natural part of their relationship now, ending missions with the jinko stalking over to him and slotting their mouths together, shredded clothes and bloody overcoats be damned.
And well speaking of dick spines, he doubts that the jinko has them at all given their past excursions. But it would be a real problem if he actually did, though highly unlikely, because well…
It’s been 3 months and they still haven’t done anything on the down low. And Akutagawa is quickly becoming…impatient.
The scenery outside the car windows freezes in place, signalling their destination. Higuchi immediately fumbles to open the door to her side and rounds the car in record time to open Akutagawa’s.
“Senpai! We’re here!”
Akutagawa steps out of the black vehicle, trying very hard not to give Higuchi a full-on irritated face. He's always been annoyed Higuchi for her unnecessary actions, but he’s learned a long time ago that nothing he would say would ever faze her.
He gives their destination a cursory glance; a shipping dock near Osanbashi. Large enough to house multiple freights but small enough not to be considered as major, thereby making it perfect for contraband trade. One of these freight containers is not like the others.
“Senpai, Chuuya-san’s instructions were to either eliminate or capture the foreign syndicate’s ability users. We do not need to track down their upper brass as he thinks the Boss might make arrangements with their leader to be absorbed into the Port Mafia—”
“I know, Higuchi.” Akutagawa cuts her off firmly, trying to let her know that she does not need to reiterate everything to him every single damn time, he’s her superior for god’s sake. But all he gets is an enthusiastic “Yes! As expected from senpai!”.
He almost rolls his eyes, if not for the sudden cough that comes up from his chest. The sounds of his coughing were drowned out by the sound of another vehicle arriving on the scene. The car doors open, and out comes a bespectacled blond man sporting a ponytail, notebook in hand, and from the other side comes out…jinko.
Higuchi is immediately on guard beside him, but Akutagawa cracks up a smirk from behind the hand covering his mouth, gaze locked in with intense violet-yellow eyes.
---
“The Armed Detective Agency isn’t here to share your goal of eliminating the syndicate’s ability users. We are only here to gather intel about the syndicate’s top brass. We believe one of their leaders is connected to one of our ongoing cases.” Kunikida Doppo recites without looking up from his notebook, scribbling furiously with veins popping out on his forehead. “That damn Dazai messing up my schedule! The stupid bandage wasting machine was supposed to accompany Atsushi here but the idiot really chose this time to escape to god knows where…”
Akutagawa perks up at the mention of his former mentor’s name, surprised and crushed at the same time to know that he could have been here. If Dazai-san were here, I would have used this chance to finally prove myself worthy… Across him, Atsushi raises an eyebrow at his reaction to which Akutagawa pointedly ignores. Behind them, Higuchi is scanning the shipping dock with her binoculars.
“….anyway we don’t need your armed grunts to come rushing in.” Kunikida continues after his mini rant, gesturing to the multiple black cars parked around the vicinity. “I’d rather keep the element of surprise. And we do not have the slightest clue about the abilities of our opponents, which is worrying considering that the agency and the abilities division has nothing on record.”
“Hm. Pathetic.” Akutagawa grunts out. Kunikida’s eyebrow twitches, but he presses on.
“It is unfortunate. What we do know is that while the ability users are here guarding their cargo, their top brass is probably somewhere else. We will need to extricate information from one of their ability users regarding their leaders’ details. Will you be able to cooperate with us on that?”
“Do what you want. Just don’t get in my way.” Akutagawa replies, but he’s not looking at the blond man. Atsushi glares back, looking as if he wanted to say the same thing to him.
“Good. Okay, now here’s the plan…”
---
Suffice to say, the fight was greatly disappointing. The ability users turned out to be just two scared brothers, probably younger than 12. They were kidnapped by the syndicate from their family in Germany, and were given instructions to deter anyone who takes an interest on the cargo. The only action they got were the couple dozen of foreign armed goons who flanked the cargo ship, which was obviously a piece of cake for the combined prowess of Rashoumon and Beast Beneath the Moonlight.
The ability users weren’t even particularly troublesome; their ability, Grimm Fairytale could create grotesque versions of a person’s fantasies but only if both brothers were holding each of a target’s hands. Kunikida handled them well by addressing them gently, accompanied by some coaxing from Higuchi (a sight that was a bit disconcerting), and the brothers easily squealed their leaders’ details. Well as much as two scared children could possibly know, which was still apparently more than enough for one of the detectives in the agency to pinpoint the identities and locations of the syndicate's leaders.
“Okay. Alright. I’ll see you again at the office tomorrow. Yes. Take care, Kunikida-san!” Behind him, Atsushi ends his call. Higuchi had been forced to accompany the Grimm brothers, mostly because they wouldn’t let go of her pant legs. Akutagawa had waved her off, saying something about ordering her to accompany Kunikida to bring the children to a safehouse. He figures the mission counts as a success on Port Mafia’s end.
He feels an arm curl around his waist from behind, startling him mid-cough. He stiffens reflexively and he’s quick to clutch on the jinko’s forearm with both hands, nails digging into pale skin.
“You do that one more time and I will seriously kill you, jinko.”
Atsushi sighs, turning him around so they were face to face. “As if you haven't been doing that all this time." Atsushi mumbles, eyes not meeting Akutagawa's but rather at his lips. He leans in, and Akutagawa's eyes flutter closed.
They kiss languidly, arms around each other's waists, their similar heights providing them ease. Their tongues dance with no real rush, feeling completely relaxed in each other's embrace. Akutagawa notes something new every time they do this. How the jinko likes to pinch his hands on Akutagawa's waist, or how he likes it when he pulls at his bottom lip with his teeth. Atsushi pulls him flush to his chest, deepening their kiss and Akutagawa lets him, placing both hands on the jinko's shoulders-
Somewhere behind them, one of the goons groans in pain. They pull apart reluctantly, sharing one look before peeking behind to check for the source of the noise. Akutagawa briefly considers stabbing the goon with Rashoumon, if not for the hand that pushes at his shoulder.
"Let's just get out of here."
---
They're walking along a desolate street, which was unsurprising at this time of the night. Beside him, Atsushi is wearing his spare shoes, but his shirt was tattered on the sleeves, a consequence of his man-tiger form. What a highly incovenient ability, and yet Dazai-san thinks you are better...
He knows an alley is coming up ahead, having memorized all of Yokohama's ins and outs. He wastes no time to grab at the jinko's arm and pulls him there. Atsushi tries to close in on him, going for another kiss when Akutagawa beats him to it, pushing him against the wall.
They're rougher with each other this time, more biting and angry moans spilling from their mouths as they push and pull against each other. He pulls at the hair on the base of Atsushi's neck and pulls their faces away, teeth latching his mouth on the side of the jinko's neck.
"You know..." Atsushi starts to say in between shaky breaths. "I'm starting to think making out in dirty alleys is a kink of yours."
Akutagawa huffs at that and pulls away to glare at Atsushi, not liking the comment. "Why, jinko? You think you can bring me somewhere fancy?" Atsushi smiles, dumbfounding Akutagawa for a moment. His stomach definitely did not do a flip after seeing that expression targeted at him.
"Only if you're paying." Atsushi replies as he promptly wrapping his arms around Akutagawa's waist to change their position. He lets himself be maneuvered, the back of his head hitting the wall behind him gently. Atsushi nips at his ear before leaving feather-light kisses down his neck, which Akutagawa obligingly cranes to the side, a satisfied sigh coming out from his nose. Atsushi’s arms presses them closer, chest-to-chest, Akutagawa’s torso bending back slightly.
Their crotches rub at each other at the action, hard-ons rubbing ever so slightly and—
Speaking of hard-ons…
He's not sure what comes over to him, but he pushes slightly at Atsushi's shoulders.
“Jinko.” Akutagawa breathes out. Atsushi lets out a vaguely annoyed hum, lips still continuing their ministrations at his throat. Akutagawa blurts out the question anyway.
“Do you have spines on your dick?”
...
...
...
A few moments of silence pass by, Atsushi suddenly freezing from the open mouthed kiss he was leaving on Akutagawa’s neck.
He tries very hard to maintain a straight face as the jinko lifts his head slowly, revealing a very confused expression.
“What?” Atsushi blurts out, eyebrows pulling downward in bewilderment. “Why would you even—where did you even get that idea?” He says quickly, taking a small step backwards and giving his own crotch a glance before snapping up to meet Akutagawa’s deadpan expression.
“I read earlier that male cats have spines on their penises. Is that true for you?” Akutagawa replies easily, one corner of his mouth twitching up. Atsushi’s face instantly flushes a shade of pink in front of him, mouth falling open in shock.
“I am not a cat!” Atsushi splutters, to which Akutagawa just raises an (invisible) eyebrow at.
“Well I am…s-sort of, but no, I mean!” Atsushi’s hands flail around for a bit before continuing. “No, I don’t have them! Why would you think that?” He finishes off lamely, crossing his arms while glaring at the dark-haired man.
Akutagawa lets out a hmph, though he sounds more amused that annoyed. He gives the other an unconvinced expression to rile him up further. “How unfortunate. To think you’ve been living like this all this time. Pitiful and pathetic.”
“I really don’t! Seriously!" Atsushi replies heatedly, taking the bait. "I don’t understand why you’d think that when we’ve been doing…” Atsushi trails off, glancing away. The redness from his cheek has spread all the way to his ears, making him look equal parts ashamed and angry.
“Oh really, jinko?” Akutagawa replies challengingly, a new glint in his eyes. He’s met with a violet-yellow glare.
“Prove it then.”
Akutagawa watches his reaction, a self-satisfied smirk on his own face, knowing his words will do something to the jinko.
The effect was almost immediate. Atsushi grits his teeth in annoyance before closing in on Akutagawa’s space in a fit of embarrassed rage. The sudden movement forces Akutagawa to step back and crash into the wall behind him, bracing for an impromptu fight-
But then Atsushi grabs at his wrist and places his hand firmly on his crotch.
"S-so? why don’t you see for yourself?" Atsushi says, face a mere centimeters away from his own. The effect of his glare ruined by the blush on his cheeks. Akutagawa's mouth hangs open in surprise, eyes wide, trying to think of a reply to the jinko’s sudden boldness.
Nothing comes out. Slowly he absorbs the intent behind the jinko's move, moving his gaze downwards. He can’t see much other than the dark fabric of the jinko’s pants and his own pale hand.
He presses harder and rubs tentatively on the sizeable tent underneath his palm. Atsushi swallows audibly, eyes closing and mouth falling open in relief. His still hasn’t let up on his hold on Akutagawa’s wrist, hand curling a little tighter as he grinds back slightly.
Inwardly, Akutagawa could not believe his luck, biting his lower lip as he watches Atsushi use his wrist as leverage. To think that jinko finally pushed things forward between them… He leans forward to press a kiss on Atsushi’s jaw, letting the jinko grind himself on his palm.
“I don’t know about seeing, jinko…” He breathes out, the air from his mouth fanning Atsushi’s pale hair. “Since I’m only feeling you.” He says to the other's ear, giving him a particularly hard rub to make his point clear, making Atushi's breath hitch.
His other hand reaches up to rest on the jinko's belt buckle, trying to give him a hint. Atsushi gets it immediately, pulling away from his shoulder. His hands shake a bit as he fumbles at the metal, pulling off the leather and hastily popping the button on his trousers. Akutagawa watches him work, mouth getting dryer in anticipation. He pushes a hand up at Atsushi's shirt to see him more clearly, resting his hands on his navel and feeling the lean muscles underneath. Atsushi's hands come up to rest on Akutagawa's waist the moment he pops the button open.
As they stand there, underneath the pale half-moon, Atsushi's trousers gaping wide at the front, the very obvious tent on his boxers out in the open for Akutagawa to see, he can't help but think to himself: Fucking finally.
One of his hand plays at the hem of the jinko's boxers while the other cups his hard-on appreciatively. Atsushi lets out a shaky moan, hands moving to nudge Akutagawa's coat open to rest on Akutagawa's hips. He thumbs at the hem of the other's slacks, trying to tell him the same thing.
Akutagawa ignores the action for the time-being, his bony fingers hooking on the hem of the jinko's boxers and dragging it down slowly. Atsushi lets out a hiss as his dick pops out from his boxers, the chill night air hitting his sensitive skin. He hides his face on Akutagawa's shoulder to stifle his obvious embarrassment.
Akutagawa huffs amusedly. The jinko has nothing to be embarrassed about, he thinks as he wraps a hand around the shaft and presses his thumb on the slit, spreading the precum around the head. He notes the differences between them, how the jinko feels thicker than his own, although they are similar in length. The thought annoys him just a tiny bit, feeling more pleased and excited at the fact that they have finally reached this far. He digs his thumb harder on the slit, prompting a high-pitched keen from Atsushi.
"Jinko. Look at me." He says softly. Atsushi's head rises, shy violet-yellow eyes meeting Akutagawa's grey ones. He feels himself get lost in the jinko's gaze as he gives him slow strokes, watching in appreciation as Atsushi moans, back bowing slightly in pleasure.
Atsushi lets him stroke a couple times, his cock coating the other's hand with more precum. His eyes slide back to Akutagawa's still clothed erection, and he feels a small ruge of irritation. Gritting his teeth, he straightens up, fully intent on bringing the other man on the same level. He grasps on the other's hand to halt his movements. The other man complies, but the grip never leaves his cock.
"I want to see you too." Atsushi breathes out, tugging insistently on the other man's trousers. Akutagawa lets out a soft hmph, his other hand coming between them to pop his own button open one-handedly. He pulls the zipper down and moves to reach the hem of his briefs, but the jinko beats him to it. Atsushi eagerly yanks his underwear down and wastes no time to envelope Akutagawa's cock in his fist, prompting a grunt from the dark-haired man.
Atsushi stares, wide-eyed and pleased, giving the other a few experimental strokes. Akutagawa flushes despite himself, exhaling with relief and feeling delighted that the jinko likes what he sees. Don't stare like it's your first time to see one... He strokes Atushi again, this time with more speed, before the jinko could say something about their dicks.
"Ah! Damn it, Akutagawa..." Atsushi groans but mirrors the action, matching Akutagawa's pace. He leans in to suck at the area under Akutagawa's jaw and leaves a small mark, listening closely to the other man's soft mewls and gasps.
A hand comes up behind his head to pull at his hair, but not enough force to pull him away from leaving kisses on the other man's neck. He snakes a hand up underneath Akutagawa's shirt in response, thumb grazing over the indents of his ribs before finding a pert nub. He toys with it using his thumb, Akutagawa letting out a surprised moan at the action.
"You-ah...what do you think you're doing-ngh" Akutagawa sighs out in between moans, and Atsushi quickly becomes attached to the sound of the other man losing his composure. He toys harder on the nipple, liking the way Akutagawa bit his lip in pleasure. Akutagawa picks up the pace on Atsushi's cock in retaliation, determined to make the jinko unravel first. Atsushi groans, long and low by his ear, making him shiver from the back of his eyes and all the way down his back. Atsushi picks his pace up as well, at the same time he drives his tongue inside Akutagawa's open mouth.
The sound of slick sliding between their hands resounds through the alley, making Akutagawa feel both self-conscious and hot at the same time. He responds eagerly to the kiss, tongues moving together in a heated dance before pulling back to gasp for air. The sounds of his moans become louder, but he's too far gone in his pleasure to remember to keep his voice down.
"Akutagawa..ah..." Atsushi gasps his name in between breathy moans, his other arm reaching around Akutagawa to pull them closer. He wraps his hand tighter on the other man's cock and gives firmer strokes, his pace never letting up. Akutagawa's eyes pinch closed at the action and lets out a long keen from gritted teeth, and Atsushi very nearly comes from the sight. He holds himself back, determined to make the experience last a little longer. He leaves more kisses on Akutagawa's jaw, his neck, his collarbone, thoroughly enjoying the sounds coming out from their mouths and from the hands between them.
"I'm close...ah...are you too?" He says breathlessly, whispering directly to the other's ear. Akutagawa shivers and nods shakily, not trusting his own voice. Atsushi almost feels disappointed from the other's refusal to open his mouth, but he's distracted by Akutagawa covering his hand with his own, blunt fingernails digging on Atsushi's knuckles.
A few more hard strokes from the jinko's hand and the pleasure spikes all the way up for Akutagawa who throws his head back in bliss, a dull pain spreading from his head as he hits the wall behind him. He's moaning, long and drawn out, voice breaking with trembling lips. The sight triggers something in Atsushi, quickly forcing him to follow with his own orgasm mere seconds later. His groan is muffled as he bites particularly hard on Akutagawa's neck, eyes closed and his torso bowing so far forward into Akutagawa's chest that he bends him at an uncomfortable angle.
They catch their breath, hands coated by the other's cum. Atsushi adjusts so he's resting his head on Akutagawa's shoulder instead, aware of the strain he put on Akutagawa's back.  The other man lays flat on the wall, eyes still closed with gasping breaths falling out of his mouth.
After a few minutes of coming down from their high, Atsushi pulls back and steps away shakingly. Atsushi watches as Akutagawa tucks himself in and fishes for something in his coat pocket, pulling out a handkerchief which he wordlessly uses to wipe his hands clean of cum. Atsushi blushes at the sight and hastily tucks himself back in his boxers, suddenly feeling self-conscious. Akutagawa reaches for his hand the moment he pulls the button closed, using the same handkerchief to wipe off the mess. Atsushi mumbles out a small 'thanks' before moving to insert his belt back in the buckle, genuinely appreciative for the other man's initiative.
A small awkward silence fills the air as they both finish fixing themselves up. Atsushi fidgets on his feet, unsure of what to say after their tryst. Across him, Akutagawa feels pleased and relieved that they have finally done it.
"Well..." Akutagawa is the first to break the silence, letting out a small cough before continuing. "I guess I'm relieved to find out you don't have them."
Atsushi rolls his eyes, but there's a small smile on his face. He turns around to leave.
So the jinko doesn't have spines on his dick after all.
But that wasn't the point, really. Akutagawa thinks to himself, satisfied, before stepping out of the alley with the jinko.
---
Ending note:
Handjobs only lol. Mostly because I don’t think Akutagawa can give a blowjob without coughing every 10 seconds, which would have been a real mood killer.
Re:handkerchief. I just think Akutagawa is a neat guy, you know? And neat guys normally have hankies on them. Idk, it's probably the frilly blouse which made me think this way.
Grimm Brothers as in Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who collected and wrote German fairytales including Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Snow White, and Cinderella. Plot twist? They’re actually VERY FAR from Disney’s versions, with many of their stories containing disturbing content. For some weird reason Disney decided to turn them into rainbows and sparkles.
This is the first fic for a trilogy I'm writing. Hehe. Oh and this is the first time I have written smut.  *finger guns* That's right, this is what 21 year old nerds do. I am proud of myself.
Kurobas Valentine’s Day Event 2020 Day 6: KagaKuro
I am sorry for posting late just because I am quite distracted and I can’t seem to finish this fic lol. But without further ado, I present to you the fan fave pairing, KagaKuro <3
Many thanks to @vanilla-daydreams and @theuglycrybaby for the prompt ( ˘ ³˘)♥
Tumblr media
Day 6 Prompt: Stars/I’m flattered, you’re jealous. (KagaKuro side MuraHimu)
Title: Valentines’ Wish
Summary: Kuroko doesn’t know whether to get pissed or be happy when Kagami-kun finally has the balls to ask him for a date with a catch, of course.
Rating: T for cursing
Also on Ao3
The sky is glowing hues of red and orange as the sun is beautifully setting off and Tetsuya, of all his sixteen years of existence, has never felt so content. He might not show is on his facade but he knows his feelings better than anyone. Well, maybe, except for Kagami-kun. After all, he is his shadow and he is his light.
The truth is, they have been going out for more than two months after they play Yosen in the quarter-finals. For the most part, they don’t actually make it obvious that they are together, save for those few friends that actually know. In the Seirin team, only Furihata-kun knows because he accidentally walks in on them in the locker room after practice when Kagami-kun is about to kiss him on the lips. He feels a little bit guilty because the poor guy couldn’t look at them in the eyes for two weeks straight. When asked if they’re together, Tetsuya just gives him his usual poker face but he neither deny nor admit. But it is so evidently obvious though.
He glances at the taller boy who is walking beside him. It’s not the first time he has noticed that he has broad shoulders and psyche to die for. On the other hand, he looks like a wimpy kid when he’s beside him. But Tetsuya doesn’t care. He knows where the taller boy’s loyalty lies.
“Hey, Kuroko.” His line of thinking is suddenly interrupted when Kagami-kun speaks. He looks up at the taller boy in question.
“Alex gave me tickets to the planetarium and I am thinking if you’d like to go...with me?” He looks away from him with a small blush adorning his face.
Tetsuya stares at the taller boy with his usual blank expression but nonetheless, his eyes are showing a surprised expression. “Kagami-kun...are you finally going to ask me out for a date after two months of dating?”
Kagami chokes on his breath, his blush getting intense by each moment. Tetsuya does nothing and just stares impassively at him.
“S-Shut up, Kuroko! Do you want to go or not?!”
He lets out a breath of frustration. Really, when is Kagami-kun going to be honest with his feelings but not without getting embarrassed? Probably, the taller boy is also thinking about their personal time together since they haven’t gotten any between school and club practice. Although they go after practice at Maji Burger sometimes, which they have been doing ever since they have gotten together so he really won’t count it as a date. More like after school hang out as well as the fact that they are rarely alone because the second years or the first-year trio are coming with them from time to time. And as far as he can remember, the only time that they can be alone is during the time that he will help Kagami-kun with his studies just because their senpais have given up and thus, Kagami-kun is left on his mercy.
He looks up again at the taller boy after the initial shock and says, “Alright. I’ll go but really, Kagami-kun. You should’ve asked way earlier.”
He scratches his head in embarrassment and looks away. “Yeah....that’s what Alex says.”
He raises his eyebrow in annoyance. Really, Bakagami-kun?  “So, if Alex-san didn’t talk to you about it, you wouldn’t have done so at all?”
“S-Shut up, Kuroko. Of course, I would. It’s just that....Ican’tseemtosayanythingwhenIknowIhavetobeembarrasedaboutit.” Kuroko just smiles at the taller boy but says nothing, noting that he has agitated him enough. Together, they just walk in silence until they reach his house.
“Meet me tomorrow at 9 am at the station.” It is all Kagami-kun has said before he quickly pats his head and bails out. He doesn’t even have the time to say thank you and good night. But tomorrow will be a good day, he thinks. He’s just hoping that Kagami-kun should stop being easily embarrassed all the time. But honestly, he is excited. After all, this is going to be their first date and he hopes that nothing can go wrong.
-x-
The next day arrives and Tetsuya wakes up in anticipation. He does his morning routine and picks out a nice pair of black pants and a long-sleeve white sweatshirt. He looks at the mirror, feeling satisfied with his appearance and heads out after saying goodbye to his grandmother and parents.
When he reaches the station, he instantly sees the taller boy by the clock outside the station. He greets Kagami-kun and then they proceed to the planetarium. When they arrive, Tetsuya gets the shock of his life when he sees Murasakibara-kun and Himuro-san by the entrance as Kagami-kun waves at them.
“Yo, Tatsuya! Did you wait long?” Kagami-kun greets them happily when they are finally close.
Himuro-san shakes his head and says, “We actually just got here. Hello, Kuroko-kun.” He greets him with a smile. Meanwhile, Kuroko is still rooted behind Kagami-kun as he tries to process the situation. So the date that Kagami-kun is talking about is a double date?! How in the world Bakagami-kun is able to think of it as a good idea? He doesn’t know whether to laugh at the situation or get pissed.
“Ne, Muro-chin, why do we have to go on a double date with them? You drag me here in Tokyo just to see Kagami.” Murasakibara-kun whines as he munches on his potato chips. “But hello, Kuro-chin.”
That is exactly my thoughts too, Murasakibara-kun. Tetsuya silently thinks. Thinking that he is getting rude for the greeting the other couple, he gives Kagami-kun a glare first that can be translated to die.
“Hello, Murasakibara-kun, Himuro-san.”
He sees Kagami-kun gulps but with a confusion swirling around his eyes. He looks away from him and says, “Let’s go in now. I have the tickets.”
Kagami-kun and Himuro-san walk ahead of them, leaving him with Murasakibara-kun. He hears the purple head groans in frustration and Tetsuya just sighs in defeat.
“Ne, Kuro-chin, why can’t we say no to them?”
“I honestly don’t know, Murasakibara-kun.”
Himuro-san turns to them and softly yells so they can hear him, “Kuroko-kun, Atsushi, let’s go!”
Both of them just look at each other and sigh in defeat as they painfully follow the brothers.
-x-
This is not what I want for a date! Tetsuya yells frustratingly in his mind. They’ve been going around the planetarium for less than an hour and Tetsuya just wants to go home. Might you ask why? It is because he is left alone with Murasakibara-kun who keeps cursing Kagami-kun under his breath for monopolizing his Muro-chin. The two brothers are currently in awe and obviously excited as they go ahead of them in every part of the planetarium, as they passionately argue in every single thing that they can find ranging from planets, stars, milky way, and the galaxy. Kuroko just watches them but he can’t help but feel jealous of Himuro-san. He definitely understands that he is and will always be the older brother figure in Kagami-kun’s life, however, he feels that Himuro-san knows Kagami-kun far better than him. He sometimes wishes that he can be Murasakibara-kun who has no filter on his mouth and will say whatever he wants even if he is offending the other person. He knows that Murasakibara-kun still doesn’t like Kagami-kun because of the fact the Himuro-san is close to him. In a way, he can understand the purple head’s reasoning as he sometimes feels the same way. He also knows that Himuro-san loves Murasakibara-kun so much so he is not at all worried. How ironic, isn’t it? But still, sometimes he can’t help but feel jealous of their closeness. Himuro-san is a very nice person and he has actually gotten close to him but the those negative thoughts are usually creeping in without him intending to do so. His thoughts are interrupted when he hears his company speaks, “Ne, Kuro-chin, do you want to go to the cafe here? I saw it earlier by the entrance. Looks like we’re not needed here.” He looks at the two brothers to see that Kagami-kun is taking a photo of Himuro-san by the Jupiter planet display. He can also see that Murasakibara-kun is pouting as it is obvious that he is puffing his cheeks in annoyance.
“That’s a really good idea, Murasakibara-kun. I need a vanilla milkshake.”
-x-
Taiga and Tatsuya are currently having a blast. It is their first time in a planetarium and they can’t help but feel excited like little kids who just have their first field trip. Taiga actually calls Tatsuya because Alex has given him four tickets and says that the other two are for Tatsuya and that childish giant he calls his boyfriend. When he asks Tatsuya about it, he instantly agrees. He feels a little bit guilty though. He forgets to mention to Kuroko that this is actually a double date. He can see the sour look on the smaller boy’s face when he sees Tatsuya and Murasakibara.
“Hey, Taiga. I can feel that Kuroko-kun doesn’t really want to be here. Did you even tell him that Atsushi and I are gonna tag along?” Tatsuya asks him as he takes a photo of him by the Saturn planet display.
He stops on his track and looks at Tatsuya. “W-Well, I didn’t...I didn’t get a chance actually.”
He sees Tatsuya thunks for a bit. “Tell me, is this your first date together?”
He blushes before he answers, “Y-Yeah, you can say that.”
He hears Tatsuya then clicks his tongue as he glares at him. “You...just make a stupid move, Taiga!”
“How is this stupid?”
“Of course, if this is gonna be your first date, I am sure as hell that Kuroko-kun will want to have some quality time alone with you. Even Atsushi is quite pissed when I tell him that you and Kuroko-kun are gonna come with us. If not for me convincing him that I have to use an extreme method like a really good blindfold se-“
“Fuck you, Tatsuya! I don’t want to hear it.”
“...then he won’t agree to come at all. And Taiga, fuck you too! Don’t interrupt me when I’m giving you lessons about dating.”
“Well, excuse me for not having a thick face like you.”
“Excuse me too, for not having eyebrows like you.”
“At least, I don’t have a big dick getting shoved up in my ass.”
“At least, I’m not a virgin.” Tatsuya smugly says to him as he feels his face hot from embarrassment. This fucking guy always knows my weakness. Taiga silently curses Tatsuya as he looks on the ground.
“Cmon, Tai.” His flirt of an older brother tries to console him. “I think it’s time for us to separate, at least both of our babies will be happy.”
“Yeah. Thanks, bitch.”
“No worries, asshole.”
They look behind them for Kuroko and Murasakibara but are surprised when the two are nowhere to be found.
“Tatsuya!!! They’re missing!” He panics a little. Murasakibara is easy to find however, it will be harder to find Kuroko. Shit, I think he is really mad at me.
The two brothers look at each other, nod and scram. Panic is embracing his whole system as he tries to find Kuroko. He fishes out his phone as he dials Kuroko’s number but the little brat turns off his phone. Getting frustrated, he tries to go outside for he has been through every nooks and corner of the planetarium but he still hasn’t found his shadow.  He takes out his phone again and dials Tatsuya’s number instead. After two rings, he answers. “Tai! I found them. They’re here at the cafe by the entrance of the planetarium.”
Quickly, he dashes towards the said cafe and sighs in relief as he sees Kuroko peacefully sipping his milkshake as if nothing happens. This brat!
It is Kuroko who sees him approaching first. He pulls the empty seat beside Kuroko and slumps himself. “Hello, Kagami-kun.”
“Kuroko! Where the hell have you been? We’re worried about you two.” He doesn’t receive any answer as the smaller boy just continues sipping his vanilla milkshake all the while avoiding looking at him. He looks at Murasakibara who is like a little kid with his head down as Tatsuya is scolding him.
“But, I want to spend tome with Muro-chin. Kagami has been monopolizing you a lot.” He hears Murasakibara whines. Tatsuya just sighs as he pats his boyfriend’s head and looks at him.
“Taiga, I guess it’s time to go on separate ways here. Knowing Atsushi, he won’t stop throwing his tantrum until he gets what he wants.” Tatsuya smiles at him in apology and he nods. He still can’t believe that his older brother who always gets into a fight with thugs back in LA is actually so spoiling and soft towards his giant teddy bear.
“Okay, I understand.”
The couple then stands and bid them goodbye but not without Tatsuya giving him the look.
“Thanks for today, Kuroko-kun, Taiga. And sorry for the trouble.”
“Bye, Kuro-chin. Kagami, change your eyebrow. It’s annoying~”
He abruptly stands up as he yells, “Shut up, you titan!”
“Don’t be like that, Atsushi. It’s one of Taiga’s uniqueness.” Tatsuya chuckles in amusement as he gets red. Fucking older brother.
Meanwhile, Kuroko is just looking at the interaction. He bids the two goodbyes as they go to the other direction where there are lots of sweet shops. He looks at the smaller boy after the other two is out of their sight and says, “Hey, Kuroko...I am sorry.”
Finally, Kuroko looks at him. “For what?”
“Y-you know for dragging you in a double date. And I forgot to mention it.”
“Hmm...”
“Are you listening at all?”
“Yeah, I am. It’s alright Kagami-kun. You should’ve told me ahead for I am actually looking forward to this.”
“I can’t say anything to that. It’s my fault. Sorry.”
“You’re forgiven. I am also sorry for disappearing suddenly. I am a..bit...jealous.”
“Huh? Of what?”
“Of your closeness with Himuro-san.”
Taiga chokes on his breath as he looks at Kuroko in shock, not really understanding how in the world is Kuroko will get jealous of his older brother. “With Tatsuya? You know that he’s my older brother and we’ve been through so much. Y-You don’t have to be jealous of him. It’s clearly platonic and he already has that giant teddy bear as his boyfriend.”
“Not of himself but of your closeness. It feels like he knows you better than I do and I want to know more about you in a deeper sense so I can actually share the same excitement as you do with him.”
He finally understands what Kuroko is trying to say. He can’t help but swell with happiness as he replies, “You know, I still can’t understand how can you say such embarrassing words with a blank face.”
“I’ve always been like this.”
He chuckles lightly as he messes the small boy's hair, “I’m flattered, you’re jealous. But really, we have all the time to ourselves to get to know more each other deeper.”
Kuroko removes his hand from his head and faces him as he gives him a small smile. “So, Kagami-kun, do you want to start over again with the date?”
He grins at him and says, “You bet!”
Omake
Valentines’ day comes and Kuroko finally gets the date that he wants. They are about to go home but they decide to stop by the park nearby that is facing the Rainbow Bridge. Since it’s already dark, they will be able to see all the beautiful colors that light up the bridge. They are currently sitting on the bench as Kuroko looks up at the sky being adorned by the stars. As he is basking himself at the beauty of the endless galaxy, he abruptly stands up as he sees a shooting star and tells the taller boy beside him.
“Kagami-kun, look, a shooting star.” The taller boy looks up too and becomes in awe. Kuroko closes his eyes and makes a wish as does Kagami-kun. When he opens his eyes, he notices that the taller boy is looking at him with a grin plastered on his face.
“What did you wish?”
He glances at him impassively and says, “I wish that Kagami-kun would groom his eyebrows.”
His grin is instantly wiped out of his face as Kuroko laughs at him.
But really, what he really wishes is:
To be Kagami-kun’s shadow until the end.
NOTE: Uh, yeah. That’s the sixth installment for you all. Hope you guys like it! I really have fun doing this prompt especially the interaction between the brothers. Thank you for reading <3
all in a day’s work (2/?)
Bungou Stray Dogs  x  Cells At Work.
.
"Atsushiiiii! " Naomi quickly envelops Atsushi in a tight hug as soon as they get back to the dorms. He still feels dazed after getting away from the scene; Tanizaki had immediately come to pick him up after hearing what happened, even pushing away the Killer T Cell that had been questioning him about the creature's whereabouts. The whole body had been placed on red alert since that afternoon; apparently, the remaining stragglers had managed to escape the Neutrophils' initial attack efforts.
"You probably shouldn't go to work tomorrow," Tanizaki says later over dinner, eyebrows furrowed with worry. "Just call in sick. I'll tell the boss for you."
"N-No, I'm fine," Atsushi manages to find his voice, "these things do happen on the job. I'm prepared."
"The  hell  you are!" Naomi slams a hand on the table, almost spilling her miso soup. "Pneumococci are really dangerous! Pneumonia's just the beginning; they can also cause severe bacteremia and worse, meningitis! You're not going anywhere! Nii-sama, too!" She directs her glare to Tanizaki, as well, who does not protest his sister's outburst, but remains frustrated nonetheless.
Later that night, Atsushi remains wide awake while in bed, his mind replaying the day's events. He wouldn't describe himself as some sort of hero at all. Those would be the immune cells, the body's own elite military force that defended against attacks from harmful pathogens. Unlike him, they are fully trained to detect and annihilate any and all threats that come their way. It's just how their world works.
Even so, Atsushi knew he could not just stand back and watch a helpless cell die. Just like back then—
"Do you really want to die that quickly?!"
That... Neutrophil, Akutagawa. If he hadn't arrived on time, Atsushi would have probably been killed right there and then. Everything happened so quickly— the way his coat fluttered in the acrid air, and the swiftness with which he wielded his knife... It was like watching a dance of death, the blood splatter extending like a flurry of red petals.
"Like a blood knight," Atsushi mumbles to himself. Even he has heard of the rumors of the "Rabid Dog" that had joined the Neutrophil Division a few months ago, around the same time as when he started to work as a Red Blood Cell. To think that he'd been saved by that very person just this afternoon— what were the chances, indeed.
It was all too familiar to him, for some reason— something, back in the recesses of his memory, that he couldn't recall, no matter how hard he tried.
Atsushi immediately stops that line of thought, sensing a headache coming on. He turns to his side and closes his eyes, thinking of how to spend his break tomorrow. He doesn't want to worry Tanizaki and Naomi any more than he already has. Time to move on.
-
The riverbank is quiet in the early morning, with only a few red blood cells milling about with crates of gas tanks. It seems that the body hasn’t woken yet from its slumber, lending to the more relaxed overall atmosphere.
It is actually one of Atsushi’s most favorite times of the day, starting from back when he worked the night shift for a few months. The slower pace had given him more time to think and learn things.
Today, too, he is seated in his usual spot, notebook and pen in hand. He has forgone the red jacket for a pale, brown cardigan, over an old white shirt and black jogging pants. The gentle upwind caresses his face as he watches the sun rise.
Atsushi flips to the most recent page and begins to write. It had begun as a coping mechanism of sorts; Ozaki-sensei had taught him how to deal with his old nightmares in this manner. The first entries have been rigid and restrained, then have eventually grown more detailed as he learned to let his words flow more naturally. It had certainly been a long time since he’d had to use his notebook, but now is probably as good a time as any to start again.
He is already three-quarters into the entry when an angry baritone intones from behind, “What are you doing here? Somatic cells are not allowed to leave their homes until further notice.”
Atsushi immediately turns around to explain, and is again met with those jet-black irises, this time flashing in mild annoyance. Likewise, the scowl on the other man’s face is replaced with brief surprise, before settling into an amused smile.
“Oh, it’s you,” they both say in unison. Atsushi follows this up with a smile of his own, eliciting a raised eyebrow in response.
For someone who has apparently been patrolling all night, Akutagawa doesn’t look any worse for wear at all, the additional blood splatter on his dirty fatigues notwithstanding. His posture remains taut even as he uncrosses his arms, in what Atsushi presumes is an attempt to diffuse the tension between them. He lets out a small chuckle at this before he could stop himself.
“What’s so funny?” Akutagawa growls at him. It makes the couple of red blood cells nearby flinch, but Atsushi only laughs harder instead.
“N-Nothing at all,” he says while wiping a tear with his gloved hand. “I just didn’t expect you to react the way you did just now.” The explanation does not convince Akutagawa at all, whose expression is currently something between a grimace and a frown, as he tries to process what he has just heard.
Atsushi finds it unexpectedly endearing, and his heart almost skips a beat at the thought.
The sun has just fully risen, and the background chatter gradually becomes louder as more blood cells arrive in the area. It sets Akutagawa on edge once more, and he quickly turns to leave, taking much larger strides than usual.
“Akutagawa-san,” Atsushi calls out to him, stopping him in his tracks. Akutagawa whips his head back, tired eyes in a dead-set glare once more. “I’m actually on break today,” Atsushi continues anyway, carefully standing back up and dusting the grass that stuck to his pants, before jogging lightly towards Akutagawa. “Can I walk with you, at least part of the way?”
Akutagawa’s glare only deepens, as he gives Atsushi a quick once-over from head to toe. He doesn’t say anything for a while at first, the silence between them making Atsushi’s skin prickle. Finally, Akutagawa’s face relaxes into a more neutral expression as he turns back to continue on his path.
He doesn’t say no, at least, Atsushi thinks as he falls into step beside Akutagawa. This is fine for now.
-
The continuation of Akutagawa’s foot patrol brings them to a puncture wound at the right median cubital vein, where a blood sample had just been drawn earlier. Atsushi notices a small group of platelets there, repairing the damage to the vascular endothelium there. A relatively simple job order like this would only take twenty-four hours, tops, yet Akutagawa observes the goings-on with an ominous frown.
He’s just normally like that, Atsushi tries to convince himself, but the longer he thinks about it, the more he starts to believe Akutagawa, as well.
“Big Brother Red Blood Cell?” a tentative voice calls from behind him, and Atsushi whirls around in surprise. The platelet he had saved yesterday shyly waves back at him, with an excited grin that reaches up to their ears. “It is you!” they confirm in delight, immediately running closer to him for a hug.
Atsushi bends down to the child’s height and accepts the small embrace, giving them a gentle pat on the head before adjusting their lopsided cap. “Hello there! Glad to see you’re doing well.”
The platelet nods enthusiastically, gesturing to the ongoing construction work behind them. “Yup, all thanks to you, Big Brother and the Big Brother White Blood Cell!” Atsushi instinctively looks behind him, just in time to see Akutagawa flinch at the mention, a pale hand over his face as he looks away, trying to suppress the rosy flush that is now growing there. “I… was just doing my job,” he deflects, as if to ask the child to just go away and get back to work, as it were.
Atsushi nearly snorts at this, but resists that temptation in favor of telling the child just that. “I think your team leader’s calling for you,” he says, gesturing to the taller, dark-haired girl in twintails now approaching them. She gives Atsushi a hesitant smile, bending down, too, to tap the child on both shoulders.
“Thank you for saving one of my teammates,” she nods her head as if in a bow, the mobile phone hanging around her neck bobbing with the action. “All of us platelets appreciate your bravery, good sirs.”
“You’re welcome,” Atsushi smiles back, now feeling the same embarrassment Akutagawa is trying hard to suppress since earlier. He settles for putting a hand behind his head to show just that, and the girl understands at once, taking the child by their hand before standing up to leave.
“Do let us know if there is anything you need in the future,” she offers. “I’m Kyouka, one of the platelet team leaders, and this is Q.”
“All right, Kyouka, Q,” Atsushi acknowledges with another nod. “It was nice meeting you both.”
“Likewise. We must get going now, good sirs.”
The short meeting ends soon after, and Atsushi turns back to Akutagawa, who has now lost the pink blush on his cheeks, yet remains in silent contemplation. “Thanks for waiting, Akutagawa-san. Where are you going next?”
Akutagawa does not answer this, and the strange foreboding from earlier creeps back, sending slow chills down Atsushi’s spine. The body had blood drawn just recently; was there any reason for that?
He then remembers that the red alert warning, too, hasn’t been lifted. It makes him hesitate— was he holding Akutagawa back?
“A-Akutagawa-san?...” Atsushi begins again tentatively, but is taken aback when Akutagawa’s radar suddenly picks up a distant signal, and he suddenly runs back in the direction they came. Atsushi is only briefly stunned by the sudden start, before he, too, starts running.
He catches up to Akutagawa before long, barely sparing him a glance as he asks, “I-Isn’t this already the axillary vein? What’s going on?”
Akutagawa’s radar only buzzes louder in response, and they both pick up the pace. They reach a minor valve, which Akutagawa expertly jumps over, while Atsushi is momentarily thrown off as he attempts to clamber over it. He could normally pass through the venous valves if he were wearing his uniform and ID, but this just had to happen while he’s off-duty, of all days.
In that short instant, the distance between him and Akutagawa has already increased exponentially, and Atsushi shouts in his loudest voice: “Wait for me!”
Akutagawa’s shoulders tense up even more, but he doesn’t stop running. “You stay there, Red Blood Cell! It’s not safe!”
You’ll only hold me back, is what Atsushi hears, and it frustrates him so much— the tail-end of Akutagawa’s last words, the mechanical beeping of the valve alarm, and the soft, angry growls rising from his chest as they end in a cry of frustration out of his trembling lips.
“Red blood cells run from bacteria, not fight them!”
He knew that—  knows that. This was never his fight to begin with.
Atsushi returns to the dorms, dejected, and buries himself under the covers. The area-wide sirens from outside wail loudly, announcing evacuation orders, but he couldn’t care less about that now.
There’s no point, after all— there was never one, for him.
DAZAI OSAMU : QUICK CHARACTER STUDY
(At 3 AM in the morning and that's why it's messy, all over the place and generally, shit.)
Majority of the characters in BSD are morally grey, Dazai included. I'm unable to categorise characters into good or evil, which is what makes BSD really nice to watch.
Majority of the instances, whenever I have an opinion on someone like Dazai, it's mainly based on their actions. I'll make an exception for his case because I believe he speaks the truth sometimes.
It's seriously difficult to believe what someone like him says. His weapon is his intellect and his tongue. He could say this and do that instead. Obviously he isn't good at combat, but he could say something and have you on the hook.
He's cunning, sly and in general: a liar (sometimes). As for psychological manipulation… well, it's not something to be looked down upon since it's in our everyday lives.
DARK ERA
He has a more serious aura and was far more suicidal compared to ADA Dazai. He barely flinched when a bullet grazed his cheek.
I won't even sugarcoat the fact that Dazai is an asshole.
The way he treated Akutagawa is wrong. The training may have made him resilient, but his mental health isn't in an okay shape. In the end, he even upped and left him without an explanation (although, I think Akutagawa has an idea of why he left).
Remember when he fired at the GSS captain? If I didn't count wrong, it was 13 shots (my dude over here desecrating a corpse).
Tumblr media
(I couldn't find the GIF of him shooting the corpse, so this is as close as I can get)
He does poke fun at Chuuya, and you can perhaps say that he does some good (but we've only seen a single good deed so far…).
He recognized that Chuuya was being manipulated by the Sheep and in his own way gave him a push. There was the part* when Shirase was talking and it zoomed in on Dazai, who had a wary, analyzing look on him.
Tumblr media
It's clear that the Sheep is quite dependent on him. They believe that Chuuya will be there to save them whenever they fuck up (ex. crossing the river to steal booze, when they know it's near the PM HQ, in result, getting a few of their members captured). They came looking for him to put it simply, beat up and save their comrades, which points towards the fact that they are using him for his ability.
Shirase also said:
"People who hold more cards than others have a responsibility. Fulfill your responsibility as the one with the trump card called an ability."*
Which again, further points towards the fact that they are using him for his ability and somewhat guilt tripping him.
Dazai later adds his own input.
"Amusing. You guys are truly amusing. He's by far the strongest among you, but he's like a sheep being stared down by wolves."
Called out.
It then changes to show Chuuya's face. Honestly he looks on guard, and I think he knows what they're trying to do, but it's a can of worms he would rather not open, y' know?
Dazai then later says once more when Shirase is trying to convince Chuuya to kick the PM's ass.
"Give it a rest. He has the freedom to choose how he uses his ability. Even a child would understand that. There's no argument."
And as a final attempt to convince Chuuya, he pulls the old guilt trip card, which Dazai and Chuuya ignore.
"Don't forget, Chuuya! The Sheep who took you in when you had no identity and nowhere to go!
When all of this is happening, Dazai knew Chuuya was being manipulated, and he also watered the seed of doubt with his actions, and in the end the Sheep turned their backs on Chuuya, which led to Chuuya joining the Port Mafia.
I can say this was a small good deed, pulling Chuuya out, but the choice was Chuuya's and he just gave a push.
ARMED DETECTIVE AGENCY
Dazai isn't a naturally kind and virtuous person, but he's trying, for Oda (oh boy).
The way he handled Kyoka's situation wasn't all rainbows and confetti.
I have a feeling he's trying to look at the bigger picture, to save people (perhaps because he blames himself for Oda's death, but I'll set that aside temporarily due to the time), but his methods aren't... nice. Atsushi has gotten hurt multiple times, Akutagawa too. In some ways, I suppose I can understand some things are unavoidable, but still.
Compared to how he treated Akutagawa, he's far better with Atsushi. He's treating him the way Oda treated him.
Atsushi has a completely different mindset compared to Akutagawa. He's a selfless person, he fights injustice. If Dazai tried to treat him the way he treated Akutagawa, I can confirm that isn't gonna turn out good.
Besides, he's trying to become a better person. That, and he owes Akutagawa an apology.
From this part onwards, these are all flash thoughts that I wrote quickly because I'm falling asleep by the minute.
FLASH THOUGHT #1 :
Now that's over with… I don't particularly have anything to add on. So I'm going to move onto… uh, how do I word this, facade?
I said above that his weapon is his intellect. It's clear that whatever he has on can be fake, or real. Y'know that goofy, playful Dazai we all know.
He's probably able to control his every movement and actions. Like, I cannot imagine Dazai doing something ACCIDENTALLY. Imagine that, someone who can control his own heartbeat, doing something accidentally (unintentionally, he never meant to do it, yeah that would be surprising).
But then again he's human… despite being a strategic and tactical genius… so yes, him doing something on accident would be interesting to watch.
Now if he miscalculated or like mistaken, uh, like that time, with the hiker, BSD Season 3. Then, yes that's understandable.
FLASH THOUGHT #2:
Mk… facade and accidents are covered… uh… I'll talk about the power he had when he was 14, Dark Era Dazai.
… He had enough sway in the mafia since he was 14 (correct me if I'm wrong). He was allowed to be the sole witness of the Boss's final wish. SOLE WITNESS. A young boy at the age of 14 was allowed to be the sole witness.
He was considered to be the youngest executive in the Port Mafia. If so, then why didn't the other executives (during the reign of the Old Boss) fight over the choice to be the witness of the Boss's death other than Mori. Perhaps the Old Boss didn't have executives, but that's unlikely.
Now, that's something.
FLASH THOUGHT #3:
Talking about suicide… I think Dazai doesn't want to die, but he does. He's failed so many suicide attempts, some of them being sabotaged, but what about the others.
Since Dazai didn't have anyone around his age constantly (save for Oda and Ango, but several years later… perhaps when he was 16, seeing how Oda and Dazai knew each other during the Dragon's Head Rush), he only had victories of his missions and such to comfort his loneliness.
I think that it's practically ingrained in him.
Dying means winning and losing. Your life is finished.
If that's the case, dying would mean he lost (but won). It's conflicting and confusing as hell, I know ;-; . I'm trying to explain my thoughts the best I can - .
When Chuuya came around, his loneliness was, um, calmed, a little.
Oda died and gave him a reason to live.
I think he still feels a little lonely though.
That's the end. I'll be out like a light in about 3 mins so I'll just, drop a GIF and go before I start pressing anything on accident.
Tumblr media
Yep, okay, bye bye.
oh, I forgot the hashtags, um .
Hashtags added.
Good night. :D
when your soulmate has too much health insurance
Rating: T Relationship(s): DazAtsu, a bit of sskk Tags: Hospitals, Soulmates, Fluff and Humor, Nursing Student!Atsushi, Dazai-Typical Suicide References Summary:
Atsushi, nursing student at the Yokohama hospital, is having a bad day. A bad few days, actually. In a world where soulmates share each other’s pain, Atsushi has had the bad luck of being paired with someone who is constantly getting hurt. On top of that, he has to deal with one particularly annoying patient—who seems determined to come back to see him at every chance he gets.
for day 8 of @dazaimultishipweek2019!
-
Atsushi is having a bad day. His side aches like a bitch, he has a headache, he’s barely slept in three days, and all he wants to do is lie down and maybe illegally administer himself some morphine.
He shifts, and his side gives him a sympathy twinge. He sighs.
I wonder if you’re having a bad day, too, he thinks to himself. And why on earth do you keep getting hurt?
Maybe it’s illogical to worry about someone you’ve never met, but, well. Soulmates defy logic, anyway.
Imagine this: the universe gives you one clue to who your “other half” is, and that clue is—of all things—pain . There’s probably some message there about people being brought together over shared suffering, but, well, if that’s so, Atsushi isn’t sure if he wants to know what the universe thinks of humanity.
So he deals with phantom aches and pains that he receives from his soulmate, tries his best not to get hurt himself, and studies hard to get a job in the medical field.
(Maybe it’s illogical. Maybe it’s just the universe’s fucked up sense of irony. But Atsushi can’t help but worry, sometimes, about how often his soulmate seems to get hurt.
And if that’s one of the reasons why he decided to go into medicine, well…who’s going to know?)
“Atsushi!” Yosano-sensei calls. Atsushi quickly stands up from his seat by the nurse’s station, rubbing his eyes to get rid of the drowsiness.
“Yes, sensei?”
“Attend to the patient in room 107.”
Atsushi tilts his head in confusion. He’d been so sure he’d covered all the rooms assigned to him…
He nods, anyway, giving the doctor a quick bow as he passes.
He stops by the door, and gives himself a quick pat down—his scrubs are a bit wrinkled, but they’ll do (they’re dark blue with a repeating pattern of little white tigers running all over it—a welcoming gift from the team when he first started here as a nursing student). Finally, he slaps his cheeks lightly, puts on his best customer service smile—bedside manner is important, after all—and opens the door.
“Hello! How are you doing tod—oh it’s you again.”
The man sitting on the hospital bed gives him a cheerful wave.
Dazai Osamu. Also known as: the hospital’s most frequent client and visitor, a nightmare for insurance, chronic malingerer, professional pain in the ass, and the most annoying patient Atsushi has ever had the misfortune to tend to.
“Atsushi-kun!” Dazai calls out delightedly. “Looking well today, I see.”
Atsushi is quite sure he looks like absolute crap, actually.
“Thanks. So are you. Which begs the question: what are you here for this time?”
Dazai holds up a bandaged arm, and points at it emphatically with a dramatic pout.
Atsushi blinks.
Dazai is always covered in bandages. Just what is he supposed to be looking at?
“Would you believe it? I left the window by the kitchen open, and a stray cat came in! I tried to pet it, but then it scratched me and knocked over the pot that was cooking.”
Atsushi frowns.
“Is the cat okay?”
“Is the—yes, the cat’s okay. But aren’t you worried about me, Atsushi-kun? I am bedridden from this terrible disaster!”
Atsushi hugs his clipboard close, narrowing his eyes at Dazai.
“Dazai-san, with all due respect, this is the fifth time you’ve come in this week, and none of it was for a legitimate reason. I’m surprised they keep letting you occupy beds at this rate.”
And why does Yosano-sensei keep asking me to tend to you? Since when did I become Dazai-san’s designated caretaker??
Dazai gasps. “I’m wounded!”
Atsushi rolls his eyes. “If only. How bad is the burn?”
Dazai shrugs. “I’m not quite sure.”
There’s a pause. Atsushi squints at him again, edging nearer to inspect Dazai more closely. Bandages don’t quite look fresh, so they haven’t been newly dressed, no pinkish or reddish skin, no visible discomfort from chafing...
“Dazai-san…” Atsushi pinches his nose. “Did the pot or its contents actually hit you when it was knocked over?”
Dazai flashes him an absolutely cherubic smile.
“Are you hoping for some grave injury to befall me so you can keep me to yourself longer? How sly of you. Why, Atsushi-kun, if you wanted to spend time with me, you could’ve just said so! By the way, I’m free Friday after five.”
Ah, yes. In addition to being a total pain in the ass, Dazai is also resident hottie and fuckboi. All the nurses like to moon over him, and he’s definitely aware of it. His looks? Sublime. His attitude? Atrocious. His favorite pastime? Teasing Atsushi.
Atsushi sighs. He knows from experience that there’s not much he can do to get Dazai to leave faster—he’ll either cause a dramatic and embarrassing (for Atsushi) scene, or he’ll find a way to get injured and come back before the day is over.
Atsushi’s learned to just ignore him.
It’s not like he’s serious about any of his advances, anyway, he thinks to himself.
“That’s a no, then. I’ll never understand how you even manage to weasel your way into this part of the hospital, Dazai-san.” Atsushi gives him a judging look, hands on his hips, but relents. A job is a job, after all, and Yosano-sensei asked him to attend to the patient in this room, so that’s what he’ll do.
“Is there anything you need, Dazai-san?”
“Coffee, please.”
“The usual?”
“If you could, thank you.”
Just as Atsushi is about to turn and head out the door, he notices something. He leans in, hand reaching up to gently turn Dazai’s jaw to the side. Dazai follows obediently, compliant under gentle fingers, tilting his head when Atsushi pokes his cheek. Atsushi’s eyebrows furrow even further.
Is that blood , dripping from his hairline?
“Dazai-san.” Atsushi straightens. Before he can pull away, Dazai grabs the hand that had been on his cheek with both of his, tugging him back in.
“Yes, Atsushi-kun? What is it?” His eyes sparkle. “Don’t tell me! You can’t bear to leave me alone like this! It hurts you just to see me lying here—”
“ Dazai-san. Do you have a head injury?”
Dazai lets go momentarily to scratch his head, then pulls his hand away to look at the blood that collected under his nails, and blinks.
Atsushi’s headache intensifies.
“Why, it seems I do! Atsushi-kun! How did you know?” He gasps. “Could it be, that we’re connected? Like soulma—”
Atsushi tugs his hand away and is out the door before Dazai can finish, calling out for a doctor.
 -
After the initial panic over Dazai’s now-treated head wound (God knows how long he sported it without noticing ), Atsushi finally manages to find a moment to sit down. And of course, the moment he sits down, he’s called to go check on another patient.
He pauses outside of the door of room 111 and takes a deep breath.
“Hello! How are you tod—” Atsushi gulps.
The man in the bed is glaring balefully at him, as though he’d personally murdered his dog.
“Do you often ask your patients that?”
Atsushi quails under the icy scrutiny, and peeks at the charts in his hands.
Name: Akutagawa Ryuunosuke. With a slew of chronic respiratory problems, he’s just been released from OR after being treated for...a gunshot wound??
“I am in a hospital,” Akutagawa continues. “I was shot. My subordinates didn’t follow my orders. I am apparently being treated by an idiot. I am doing terribly today. Must you ask?”
Atsushi shrinks back.
“M-My apologies...Akutagawa-san.”
“Tch.”
Atsushi felt the disdain behind the force of that ‘tch’ down in his very bones.
“W-When did you sustain your injury?”
Atsushi barely holds back a squeak of fear when Akutagawa pins him with another glare.
“Early this morning, at around three am.”
Huh. That’s weird, that’s around the time Atsushi had woken up, gasping at the sharp eruption of pain in his side. He hadn’t gotten a lick of sleep for the rest of the night, unable to ignore it nor the worry for his soulmate.
...Could it be?
Atsushi gulps.
How...how does he confirm it, though?
“You...you wouldn’t also happen to have a headache, right now, would you?”
“I’m looking at one right now,” Akutagawa spits, staring him right in the eye. Atsushi winces.
Right. Hospital patient. Having a terrible day. A headache is a given under those circumstances, right? Besides, maybe the headache is caused by Atsushi, from acute sleep deprivation. If that’s true, he definitely doesn’t want Akutagawa to know that he’s the reason. If they are...soulmates.
But he can’t bring himself to leave it alone. If this man is his soulmate...he’d never forgive himself if he didn’t find out, and let him go.
“May...May I see your injury?”
Akutagawa is silent. Then with a sigh, he shifts and lifts the blanket, gesturing towards his lower left side.
Exactly the area near where Atsushi’s soulmate pain originates from. What are the chances of two people getting hurt in the exact same area at almost the exact same time?
 Atsushi walks forward, and lifts his hand—only to realize, he’d have to lift Akutagawa’s hospital gown to look at it. Lift it...above the hips. When he may or may not be wearing anything underneath it.
His hands shake. Akutagawa continues to stare balefully at him.
Oh no, he thinks to himself. Oh no.
“I just—”
Atsushi steps away, and decides to just go for it.
“It’s just that I...I um. I’ve been having a sharp pain near that area as well...since early this morning. As well. Like you. I have it. Too. So. I thought. Ah…”
“You think you could be my soulmate.” Akutagawa deadpans.
Atsushi nearly bursts into flame right then and there.
“R-right, well, yes. Yes—that. That’s what I thought. Too.”
Akutagawa gives him a quick once-over, clear disgust taking over his features.
“Well?”
Atsushi gapes.
“Well, I mean, we could—we could be—!!”
“Soulmates, yes, we’ve established that. What do you want to do about it?”
“Well, I...When people first meet their soulmates, they…”
What do people do when they meet their soulmates?
“They...they go on a date?”
The silence that follows is deafening. Akutagawa looks like he’d rather murder small children than go on a date with Atsushi. Well, actually, he looks like murdering small children would be like a walk in the park for him. He looks like Atsushi had just asked him to cook him dinner and massage his feet, or do whatever else it is that normal, healthy people do instead of murdering small children.
Finally, Akutagawa sighs, and coughs into his hand.
“All right.”
“Wait, really?”
“Must I repeat myself? Yes, really.”
“Okay!” Atsushi flashes him a quick smile, immediately brightening. Finally, they were getting somewhere! “Where would you like to go?”
Akutagawa looks pointedly down at his body, where it lies on the hospital bed.
Oh. Right.
Gunshot wound. Hospital stay.
“We can...wait until you’re discharged?”
“No. Let’s get this over with.”
Well, that doesn’t leave them with many options.
“Oh...well. I can take my break soon. And I guess we could...go down...to the cafeteria? Grab some coffee?”
Akutagawa closes his eyes and sighs.
“Fine.”
“Great!”
 -
Atsushi closes the door behind him, and heaves a sigh of relief.
“Ah, Atsushi-kun!” Dazai greets. Atsushi jumps, hand flying to his chest.
“Dazai-san! Don’t scare me like that.”
Dazai leans against the wall by room 111, fresh bandages wrapped around his head, covering his right eye.
“I just wanted to see you,” Dazai says.
“Well,” Atsushi gestures to himself, “now you’ve seen me.”
Dazai tilts his head until it rests on the wall.
“And you’re a sight for sore eyes,” Dazai responds with a grin. “Or eye, in this case.”
Atsushi sighs, and elects to ignore his comment.
“Have you been discharged? Or are you staying overnight for monitoring?”
Dazai gives him a wink. (It doesn’t work. Only one eye is visible.)
“I’ll be staying overnight in case of further complications. You have another shift tomorrow, right, Atsushi-kun?”
“Dazai-san...how did you know that.”
Dazai perks up at that.
“We’ll be seeing each other again, then!” He seems very happy with this conclusion.
Atsushi sighs.
“So? What are you doing here?”
“Ah, I was looking for the toilet!”
...Suspicious.
“I’d think you’ve been here enough times to know where the toilet is, Dazai-san. It’s in the opposite direction, down that hallway over there.”
Dazai crosses his arms in front of his chest, hunching over, as though feeling...self-conscious?
“Ah, you got me. I was actually looking for you because I wanted to ask you a question.”
Atsushi is caught a bit off guard. No “Ah, but your blinding brilliance must have made me stray off my course!” or “But how could I remember something as mundane as where the toilet is when my mind is filled with only the beautiful color of your eyes?” or some other ridiculous, Dazai-typical statement?
Atsushi eyes him warily.
“Oh. What is it?”
“Your break is soon, right?”
“...Yes? How did you—”
“Would you,” Dazai steps closer, so that there’s only a few inches of space between them, “like to come with me somewhere?”
Atsushi hesitates, feeling uncomfortable, and shrinks back.
“Dazai-san...don’t you think this joke has gone on long enough?”
A beat of silence.
“What joke, Atsushi-kun?”
Atsushi’s heart thuds.
What a good liar, he thinks. He almost seems sincere.
“W-Well, either way, I already have plans. Sorry.”
Dazai studies him for a moment before his eyes flick to the door behind him. An unreadable expression crosses his face.
He takes a step back. Something in Atsushi clenches as the space between them widens.
“Well, that’s too bad,” Dazai says agreeably. “Rain check?”
Atsushi bites his lip. Dazai’s eyes flicker down to watch.
Really, Atsushi thinks to himself, this man is too good-looking for his own good.
“...You should really get going, Dazai-san. It’s not good to linger in the halls, especially when there may still be complications with your head wound.”
Dazai almost looks disappointed.
“Well then. See you, Atsushi-kun!”
“Bye.”
Atsushi lets out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. With yet another sigh, he heads back to the nurse’s station.
 -
“So…” Atsushi begins, as he pushes Akutagawa’s wheelchair down the corridor.
It’s time.
Atsushi’s on his break, and he’s pushing Akutagawa in a wheelchair. They’re on a ‘date’.
A date to the shitty hospital cafeteria, to get the same kind of shitty hospital coffee he could make at the machines by the nurses station, but a date nevertheless.
The elevator door dings behind them and slides closed.
Silence reigns supreme.
Atsushi gulps, and tries again.
“So...how’d you get shot?”
Akutagawa doesn’t even look at him in acknowledgement.
Atsushi winces. Sore topic, maybe?
Stupid! Of course he doesn’t want to talk about how he got shot, what kind of opening line is that?
Atsushi continues to sweat as the silence stretches onwards. What do people talk about on dates again? Oh yeah, that’s right, he’s never been on one , so he has no idea. Who does he know that might be good at this?
Immediately, Dazai’s face flashes in mind, and he flushes.
No. Nope. Don’t think about it, Atsushi.
Dazai’s method of flirting definitely won’t work if Atsushi tried it. In the first place, it only works because Dazai has the advantage of being ridiculously attractive.
Why couldn’t the elevator go faster? Why couldn’t it just drop them to their imminent deaths? Why must he suffer like this?
The elevator dings on the ground floor, and Atsushi takes a right towards the cafeteria.
They find an empty table to sit at.
They sit.
...and continue to sit.
Atsushi could die from the sheer awkwardness of this encounter. Never in his life has he been more uncomfortable. What’s more, Akutagawa looks like he couldn’t give a damn, content with continuing to attempt homicide through his eyes alone.
“WellthenI’llgogetsomecoffeehahaI’llbebackbye!”
He makes his escape as quickly as possible, spends as much time dawdling by the coffee machines as possible, and drags his feet the entire way back.
Is this some kind of joke? He asks the universe. This is the furthest thing from a perfect match I’ve ever seen.
He dreads going back, but eventually he catches sight of Akutagawa again, and sits down in his seat, passing the drink back over to him.
Akutagawa takes a sip.
“It’s cold.”
“Oh, well...yes.”
“And sweet.”
“...would you like me to grab you another?”
Please say yes.
Anything to escape this sheer discomfort.
Akutagawa doesn’t reply, and just continues to sip at his coffee with a frown.
“Why would you make a cold coffee?”
“Ah, that’s…”
Atsushi flushes in abject horror.
That would be...because of Dazai.
Without realizing it, he’d instinctively gotten Dazai’s usual order. Cold coffee, but with no ice. Extra milk, and double the sugar. Decaf.
For himself, he’d gotten a regular old medium roast straight from the machine.
Gosh, what had he been thinking? He should’ve asked Akutagawa what he wanted, but he’d been in such a hurry to leave… A part of him must’ve just, instinctively…
“...Sorry,” he finishes lamely.
Akutagawa just closes his eyes and crosses his arms, as though he’d already accepted that Atsushi is a total idiot, and there’s nothing he can do about it.
Atsushi squeezes his hands together, his nerves skyrocketing as the silence stretches.
Something to talk about...something...anything…
“Ah, what do you do for a living, Akutagawa-san?”
Akutagawa snaps his eyes open and stares at him with a startlingly intense look.
“Why do you want to know?”
Atsushi pales. Another sore topic?
“Ah,” he flounders, “I’m sure that whatever it is, it must be more exciting than my job, haha! Not that working at a hospital is boring, of course, and not that I don’t like my job, I love my job! Even though the hours on top of school is a lot and I’m always tired and I don’t sleep well because my soulm—” He gulps.
“—ah, but that’s not interesting! I’m sure you’d like to hear about something else, something interesting, uhm, like, uh…”
Akutagawa, if anything, looks increasingly unimpressed.
“...Did you know that we have a regular?”
Akutagawa’s face finally changes from complete boredom to something like resignation.
“A...regular?”
“It sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Because it is! We have a regular!” Immediately, Atsushi gets fired up, seizing upon the easy topic of conversation.
“A regular patient who comes in every other day, whining about some minor injury or another, while completely neglecting to mention the important things!”
Akutagawa raises an eyebrow, and slurps his coffee.
“Furthermore, he keeps tormenting me, and I don’t know why! It’s like he specifically has it out for me and for whatever reason, I’m always assigned to his room! If I didn’t know better I’d think Yosano-sensei and he were in cahoots!” Atsushi slowly grows more and more heated, gesticulating with his hands as he rants on and on.
“You know, just this morning he came in for a fake injury and then neglected to mention he had a head wound ? Last week he came in for a ‘terrible chest pain’—which was also fake, by the way—while walking around on a twisted ankle! And he told no one! All he said was ‘Oh, Atsushi-kun, this pain must be from my broken heart, please, only you and your gentle radiance can possibly cure me!’ Everyone laughed at me! He’s infuriating ! And did I mention that he targets me especially? Because he does! He keeps making fun of me, and thinks I don’t know what he’s doing! I swear, the guy is an annoyance and a complete waste of all of our time. The next time Yosano-sensei asks me to attend to Dazai-san I’m going to say—”
Akutagawa stands abruptly, nearly knocking his coffee over, and then doubles over, clutching his side.
“Akutagawa-san?! Akutagawa-san, what are you doing?! You can’t be getting out of your wheelchair—it’s dangerous! Sit back down!”
Atsushi rushes over to press him back into the chair.
“ You. ”
Atsushi freezes at the pure vehemence in his voice.
“You...you just said… ‘Dazai-san’, didn’t you.”
“I...yes. Do you...know him?”
Oh god, does Akutagawa have some kind of grudge against Dazai? Atsushi wouldn’t put it past Dazai to have gained a number of mortal enemies, given how infuriating he can be.
“You...just said Dazai-san is an annoyance and a complete waste of time .”
A prickle of shame makes its way down Atsushi’s arms. His cheeks must be in flame right now, and he has the urge to look around and hide.
Akutagawa growls.
“You. You know— nothing . Nothing about Dazai-san—about— ”
He doubles over, coughing.
“Akutagawa-san! Please, calm down, this isn’t good for your hea—”
Akutagawa slaps Atsushi’s hand away.
“Dazai-san...Dazai-san is…”
He never finishes his sentence, but the look of desperation that comes into his eyes is answer enough. He pants, wincing and gripping his side.
“Dazai-san is a thousand times more than whatever you could hope to be in your entire lifetime. He is—Dazai-san is—You know nothing .” Akutagawa repeats.
...That’s true, isn’t it.
Atsushi...what does he really know about Dazai?
Nothing.
“You—you have what I would kill for. What I would die for. And you’re throwing it away? Treating it like trash? Calling it an annoyance and a complete waste of time ?”
That... had been rather harsh, hadn’t it? But—but after all the teasing he’s had to endure because of Dazai-san—after all the beatings his self-esteem has gone through, knowing that Dazai-san couldn’t possibly be serious—after everything—
“I—”
He has no words to say.
The cruel one isn’t Atsushi. It’s Dazai, for knowing what effect he has on people, and using it to make fun of weak people like Atsushi.
Right?
Akutagawa scoffs.
“We’re done here.”
Atsushi gapes.
“W-wait, but…”
“My soulmate would never speak such a way about Dazai-san. We’re done here. Take me back to my room.”
 -
After the disastrous date, Atsushi is back at the nurse’s station, when Yosano-sensei calls upon him again.
"Atsushi," Yosano says. "Room 107."
Atsushi knows who's in that room. He gulps.
When he pushes open the door, Dazai is looking out the window, unusually quiet.
"Atsushi-kun," he says. Strangely enough, Dazai doesn’t look over at him. He seems...subdued.
"...Dazai-san." He nearly chokes on the name, the syllables like ash in his mouth, his guts roiling with nerves. He feels irrationally paranoid, like Dazai could take one look at him and know about all the bad things he’d said about him in a fit of nerves and frustration. The conversation with Akutagawa ricochets inside his head.
You know nothing.
Dazai-san is a thousand times more than whatever you could hope to become in your entire lifetime.
"Have you come to relieve me of this tiresome, banal world?” Dazai finally turns to look at him through his one eye. Atsushi, inexplicably, feels a shiver run down his back.
He hands him a cup of water, in lieu of a reply.
“No coffee this time?”
“Water is good for you.” Atsushi doesn’t really want to make more coffee right now.
Atsushi hesitates, hovering. Dazai isn’t acting like he normally does and Atsushi finds that he...misses it. He doesn’t know what to do with this strange, quiet Dazai. Without him to fill the silence, Atsushi feels as though something heavy were weighing him down. Like something’s missing. He fidgets a bit more, then bites his lip.
But does he have the right to ask, when he so clearly knows nothing about Dazai? When he’d bad-mouthed him less than an hour earlier? When he’s just a random nobody in Dazai’s life?
He’s just a nursing student at the hospital Dazai frequents. Just a bystander that Dazai sometimes gives attention to out of amusement. What right does he have to ask him what’s wrong?
And yet, despite all that, he finds himself opening his mouth to speak.
“Dazai-san...what do you do for a living?”
Dazai looks up in surprise.
“I work as a private detective,” he answers with a smile.
“A private detective, huh… Well that explains the number of injuries, I guess,” Atsushi says with a small laugh, scratching his cheek.
Dazai leans his cheek upon his hand and gazes at Atsushi through his bangs.
“What’s with this sudden interest in my life, Atsushi-kun? Wondering if I’m single? Want to know about my past lovers?”
Atsushi rolls his eyes and resists the urge to smack him with his clipboard.
“No just...wondering.”
“Wondering…what?” Dazai leans forward eagerly, eyes twinkling.
Atsushi knows he's flirting again. His first instinct is to recoil and blow him off, but Akutagawa's words float into his mind.
He thinks about everything that Dazai has said and done to him, about the weeks and weeks of taking care of him and putting up with his wild antics...and realizes something.
“Wondering...why you almost never have any visitors.”
The only visitor Atsushi has ever seen is an angry, blond, be-spectacled man who, judging from his yelling, is a coworker. But even he is a rare sighting. Most of the time Dazai comes and goes, with no one but Atsushi and the other nurses and doctors to notice his passing through.
Atsushi had always assumed it had just been because Dazai gets injured so often that people have stopped coming by to check on him but...even that is sad.
“Ah,” Dazai puts on a cheerful facade, but his tone is bland. “Well, I do have an adoptive father, but we’re not on speaking terms.”
...Is that all?
Even Atsushi, an orphan, has a few friends that would come see him if he were ever hospitalized.
And Dazai is constantly hospitalized.
“So...you never knew your real parents?”
“Yup! Though I never really wondered about them, anyway.”
Atsushi wishes he could say the same. He shuffles his feet, pushing back memories of crying behind the orphanage garden, beneath the covers, in the library, always wondering why he didn’t deserve parents like other children.
“Does that mean that...at one point, you and your father were close, then?”
“Oh, absolutely not. Mori-san was...well.” Dazai turns to look out the window again, and his hand comes up to brush at the bandages that cover his eye. “Mori-san had certain...expectations. It’s why we don’t speak anymore.”
That sounds so...cold. And lonely.
Both of which are feelings Atsushi is not unfamiliar with—and that’s why it’s so distressing to him.
“I...I never knew my parents either.”
Dazai hums, and cocks his head in interest. Atsushi looks away, unable to meet his eyes. With no small surprise, he finds himself speaking up again.
“I...was an orphan. Grew up at an orphanage. It was...well. The director there also had...expectations, of a sort.”
He expected Atsushi would fail at everything he ever did, and would wind up as the trash of society. A burden. Useless.
“Did you fulfill them?” Dazai’s eyes are strangely knowing. Usually that would make Atsushi feel uncomfortable, or wary. But somehow, he feels...calm. Maybe he just got used to Dazai’s presence after seeing him so often, and he's mistaken the familiarity as a sense of security and trust. Maybe hearing that they have something in common made Atsushi lower his guard.
Or maybe there’s just something about Dazai that makes Atsushi want to be known.
Atsushi clutches at his clipboard, fingers turning white.
“I...maybe. I don’t know.”
Dazai reaches up to press his fingers into his bandages again.
“I fulfilled Mori-san’s expectations rather easily. Too easily, I think. But in the end, I decided not to be the person he wanted me to be. Even if, maybe, that was who I was born to be.”
Atsushi finds that he would do anything to erase the carefully controlled, fragile expression on Dazai’s face.
He finds that he wants to know. Know more, about Dazai. About everything.
“Why didn’t you want to be that person?”
Their lives may have begun similarly, and yet...they are so different. Atsushi would’ve done anything, at that time, to earn the director’s approval. Now, he wonders why.
Dazai smiles, nails digging into the bandages on his head.
“A friend told me I could be better.”
Atsushi wonders what happened to that friend, for Dazai to make such a pained expression, and for Dazai’s bedside chair to always remain empty. He knows, instinctively, not to ask.
“Are those bothering you?” Atsushi asks, indicating the bandages.
“Ah, no,” Dazai pulls his hand away, “It’s fine.”
Atsushi frowns.
“I can redo them for you, if you’d like.”
Dazai pauses, an unreadable look crossing his face.
“...If you could, then.”
It’s strangely intimate. The way the bandages unravel and collect in a bundle on the blankets. The way Atsushi brushes aside his hair, or brushes past his ear, his skin. The slow reveal of Dazai’s features. The moment when the bandages come off and Dazai gazes, with both eyes, straight at Atsushi, who is nearly cradling his face.
Atsushi grabs new bandages and re-wraps his head, this time leaving his eye clear.
“Not too tight?”
Dazai shakes his head lightly.
“Perfect.”
Atsushi gives himself a mental pat on the back.
“I’m not sure why they decided to cover your eye, anyway. Maybe they thought putting more bandages on would keep you from hurting yourself again.” Atsushi jokes.
“...Thank you. Really.”
Dazai is already looking more like his normal self, color returning to his face, his cheeks lifting lightly and eyes squinting at the corners. It's as though the bandages had, before, turned him into a lost child.
“It’s no big deal, really.” Atsushi assures him. “Were they bothering you that much?”
Dazai’s expression slips a little.
“Yes, they were.”
The sun is beginning to set outside the window now, light filtering through the sheer curtains.
“They reminded me of...a younger me.”
Atsushi doesn’t quite understand, but he thinks he can fill in between the lines.
“You’re...I’m sure you’re not the person your father made you into, Dazai-san.”
Dazai looks up at him.
“And how would you know that, Atsushi-kun?”
Atsushi finds that his voice comes out stronger and clearer than he ever knew it could be.
“I think, if you were who your father thought you were, your friend wouldn’t have advised you differently. He was an important friend, right? He must’ve known you better than your father, who didn’t see who you were, but only who he wanted you to be. I won’t lie, you’re a rather annoying person, Dazai-san, but I think...you aren’t a bad one. So I think, you don’t need to be afraid of becoming whatever it is you are afraid of becoming. Because Dazai-san is a good person, so no matter whatever else you are, that’s what’s most important.”
Dazai stares at him, mouth slightly parted.
After another pause, Atsushi’s brain finally catches up with his mouth, and he pinks.
“I’m so sorry! I stepped out of line, that was rude of me. I’ll. I’ll just be going now… S-See you tomorrow, Dazai-san…”
He rushes out the door, and slams it closed behind him, leaning against it with one hand on his beating chest and the other pressed against his hot cheeks.
I can’t believe I just did that! Bad Atsushi! Bad Atsushi!
Dazai watches him go, silhouette framed by the dying light of the sun. He looks down at his hands, which are curled around the old bandages.
“Oh, Atsushi-kun,” he murmurs, “you’re really too much for me.”
 Atsushi groans as he finally lies down in his bed, feeling the way his spine stretches out.
It’d definitely been a long, long day. He congratulates himself for getting through it alive and arguably in one piece.
Some of it definitely could have gone better, Atsushi thinks, as he stares up at the ceiling, chewing his lip.
There’s no two ways about it. The date with Akutagawa had been terrible. They barely talked, and if possible, left on worse terms than they’d started.
And they’d started on awful terms.
Maybe he was wrong. Maybe Akutagawa’s injury was just a coincidence.
Secretly, he hoped so. Akutagawa seemed like an unpleasant person and not at all like someone Atsushi would want to spend the rest of his life with. Either the universe had made some kind of mistake, or Atsushi did, and the latter is much more likely.
What was he going to do if he does turn out to be his soulmate though? How does he mend that bridge when he’d so obviously offended Akutagawa?
My soulmate would never speak such a way about Dazai-san.
And anyway, what was it about Dazai that had Akutagawa so angry and...obsessed?
Atsushi thinks about the delicate features of Dazai’s face. The slender yet sharp jaw, aristocratic nose, glimmering, deep brown eyes. His porcelain skin, the wicked curve to his lips, the soft angle of his cheekbones. His deft, clever hands. The way he glides when he walks. His soft, messy hair, which glows russet in the right lighting. The fact that he always smells good.
Okay, so maybe there was a lot to Dazai that could be obsessed over. But that’s all just physical stuff! Not important!
And then he thinks about Dazai bursting in on the scene with some ridiculous excuse in the middle of a boring work day. Dazai showering him with extravagant compliments and (albeit unwanted) attention. Dazai smiling at him even after Atsushi brushes him off.
Dazai’s fragile expression when he talked about his adoptive father. His solemnity when he talked about a dear friend who’d passed away. The way he always listened to everything Atsushi had to say, even if he tends to choose to ignore the complaints, the way he hadn’t pitied Atsushi the moment Atsushi had told him his story.
Atsushi thinks that now he may understand, just a little, the desperate look that had been in Akutagawa’s eyes.
Even without comparing him to Atsushi, there were possibly a few, or possibly a lot, of things about Dazai to be desperate over.
Wouldn’t be nice, he thinks to himself, if Dazai were my soulmate, instead of Akutagawa?
When he realizes where his train of thought had lead, he immediately groans and buries his face in his hands.
Why? Why, brain? Why would you take that train of thought in that direction? Why would you even think—
Atsushi freezes.
Oh.
Oh, no.
Oh god, do I like him? No, no, no, no… You promised yourself not to let that happen! It’s not possible! No!
  ...Okay.
So maybe he’s grown a bit fond of Dazai’s antics, and maybe he worries about how good Dazai is at hiding his real injuries.
Maybe he isn’t as immune to Dazai’s charms as he acts.
But, it’s impossible. There’s no way. None of that has to mean he has a crush on Dazai. It doesn’t! Him with Dazai-san? Dazai-san with him ? That would never work. It’s best to shut it down before he can begin to hope, and save himself the heartbreak.
He curls up on his side, mind whirling.
He needs to sleep. He has morning classes, three exams coming up, and he agreed to cover someone else’s shifts at the hospital, to boot.
Atsushi’s exhausted. He wasn’t built for this kind of stress and drama.
His side suddenly erupts in pain, and Atsushi gasps.
“Just what are you getting yourself into?” He asks the empty air, knowing he’ll get no response.
At this rate, his soulmate is going to die before they ever get to meet.
Assuming that it isn’t Akutagawa, at least.
“You need to take better care of yourself,” he whispers. His side continues to radiate pain, as if in direct response to his words.
Atsushi sighs, and prepares for another sleepless night.
 -
Atsushi didn't get another wink of sleep that night.
“Here’s the juice you asked for,” he says quietly, handing it over to Akutagawa.
That’s right.
Akutagawa is staying at the hospital for the time being, and due to where he’s located in the hospital, Atsushi is still tending to him.
Talk about awkward.
Atsushi sighs, feeling heavy from exhaustion. He can't even muster the energy to feel alarmed by the stink eye Akutagawa gives him.
“Did you...sleep okay, last night?”
He thinks about the sharp pain that he’d experienced, that had kept him awake even when he'd been in tears, praying for sleep.
Akutagawa takes the juice without a word, and haughtily turns his face away, with his eyes closed, as though being forced to even look at Atsushi was a personal affront to his very being.
“I slept fine. They administered painkillers, so I felt nothing.”
“Ah, that’s good…”
Silence.
“...Let me or one of the other nurses know if you need anything else…”
He runs out as quickly as he can.
As he goes, Akutagawa’s words catch up to him.
Wait...he didn’t feel any pain last night? Then does that mean…
Was it really a mistake after all?
 -
“Sooo, Atsushi,” Naomi kicks the ground and rolls her swivel chair over so she can lean closer to Atsushi’s ear. “How’d the date yesterday go?”
Atsushi winces. “It went...okay, I guess.”
“Hmm, really?”
Atsushi groans and covers his face.
“Who am I kidding, it went terribly .”
“Aw, what? I thought you said he could be your soulmate!”
Atsushi mentally scolds himself for telling her that.
“That’s...I’m not so sure anymore. I kind of...hope he isn’t. I can’t imagine living my life with someone like that… He acts like he can’t even stand to look at me.”
“Didn’t you just go in to check on him?”
“Yes, and it was extremely awkward!”
Naomi laughs.
“Oh, come on, it can’t have been that bad.”
Atsushi blows a piece of hair out of his face. “It was. You have no idea.”
He pauses for a moment, then looks at Naomi consideringly.
“Naomi-san…”
“No,” Naomi says, without pause.
“Naomi-san...please? Please, can you take over for just his room? Just until he’s discharged? Every time he speaks I get scared for my life, Naomi-san. I’m serious!”
Atsushi whines as Naomi laughs at him.
“Naomi-san, this is serious! If I have to tend to him any longer I think I’ll die! He hates me! So much! You have no idea .”
“All right, all right. But you have to tell me more about the details of your date later, okay, Atsushi?”
Atsushi groans.
He does not want to relive that experience. But if it means he can avoid Akutagawa for the rest of his stay...
“Fine. Deal.”
Naomi glances over at him slyly, and leans against the desk.
“I kinda feel bad for the dude though. He never really had a chance, given that you’re...biased. Don’t you think?”
Atsushi cocks his head to the side.
“Biased about what, Naomi-san?”
“Well… You know.”
Atsushi blinks at her. “What do I know?”
Naomi stares at him. “Seriously? Isn’t it obvious?”
“Isn’t what obvious?”
Naomi groans. “Oh my god you’re hopeless.”
“Fine then. Don’t tell me.” Atsushi pouts.
Naomi heaves a sigh and holds back a groan. “Dazai, silly.”
Atsushi frowns. Why is everyone constantly bringing him up?
“Dazai-san? What about him?”
Naomi rolls her eyes. “I’ll admit, you’re good at pretending, but you can’t hide from me. I know you like him, Atsushi.”
Atsushi gapes at her, then flushes up to his ears.
“I—I do not!”
A distant figure rounds a corner, and begins to walk down the hallway adjacent to them.
Naomi giggles at him.
“Oh, look at you, you’re so cute. Stay in denial if you want, then. It’s funny.”
“I’m not in denial!”
“If you say so.”
“I do say so!”
Their voices echo.
“All right then, Atsushi.” She winks at him.
Atsushi’s still blushing, looking anywhere but Naomi.
“W-Who would like someone like Dazai-san, anyway? He’s over-the-top and a flirt! He’s constantly harassing me, doesn’t take no for an answer, and in general is just—a nuisance! I don’t like him. I don’t!”
Something uncomfortable grows in his stomach as the words come out of his mouth. He thinks about bandages falling away, two eyes pinning him with an earnest gaze, a fragile smile.
He doesn’t notice Dazai standing, frozen, just around the corner of the hallway.
“You talk about him a lot for someone who doesn’t like him, though.”
“That’s—! That’s because he’s—he’s insufferable! I really just wish he’d leave me alone.”
Dazai clenches his hand into a fist, staring at his shoes.
Naomi looks at Atsushi with pity.
“Is that how you really feel?”
Atsushi looks away, fiddling with his fingers. He tries to imagine coming to work and never seeing Dazai again. Never dealing with his shenanigans, never hearing his voice, never again being able to know how he’s doing and whether or not he’s recovering from his latest injury.
No, he thinks to himself. No, it isn’t.
“...Yes.” he says, instead.
Naomi gives a skeptical hum, but pushes herself away from the desk and returns to her own work.
“Okay, okay. I’ll drop it. For now.”
Atsushi slumps into his chair. “Thank you.”
Unbeknownst to them, Dazai turns and walks away. His expression is blank, wiped clean.
“Okay then, Atsushi-kun,” he whispers to himself. “If that’s what you want.”
 -
Atsushi is on the computer, trying to ignore the continuing pain in his side and looking up a patient’s room number so he can redirect a small family of three, when he hears it.
Dazai’s voice, laughing merrily from somewhere down the hallway.
“That’ll be on the third floor, room 317,” he says with a smile, accepting their thanks with grace.
After they leave, he waits.
And waits.
 Strangely enough, Dazai doesn’t head towards the nurse’s station looking for him. No one calls him over specifically to tend to him. Occasionally, he thinks he catches the sound of Dazai’s voice as he rounds a corner, but he isn’t bothered or harassed like he usually is. Not even once.
As the hour goes on, Atsushi gets more and more uncomfortable.
Why is he making a big deal out of this? This is what he wanted right? For Dazai to leave him alone, so he can finally get over his stupid crush? To stop having his feelings played with?
He opens the cabinet where they store extra blankets, and frowns.
He’s tired. It’s nearing the fourth day he’s gotten little to no sleep. He’s ready to pass out, but he can’t. He has things to do, and whatever injury it is that his soulmate has, has apparently not been healed yet, because he can still feel it. A dull, throbbing, constant pain.
At this point, he’s relatively certain it isn’t Akutagawa. Naomi administered more painkillers at his behest, and yet the pain in Atsushi’s side has yet to abide.
Meaning that entire ordeal was completely pointless, unless the goal was to shoot Atsushi’s anxiety even higher than it already is.
He tugs at one of the blankets, standing on his tiptoes to reach. The door next to the cabinets opens. Atsushi turns to look, and freezes.
It’s Dazai, and another nurse, Sasaki-san.
Sasaki giggles, hand daintily going up to her mouth, and Dazai leans closer to whisper in her ear. His right arm is in a cast.
She’s really pretty, Atsushi thinks. They look good together.
“I’m free Friday after five,” Dazai says with a quirk of his lips.
“Oh, that’s perfect,” Sasaki says, “I get off my shift right around then.”
Dazai turns, and meets Atsushi’s wide-eyed gaze.
Atsushi feels sick.
“Oh, Atsushi-kun,” Sasaki says, before pausing. “Atsushi-kun, is everything all right?”
To his horror, he realizes he’s about to cry.
“Oh, I—I, yes—”
He stumbles back, but in his hurry, he tugs at the blankets too harshly and brings them tumbling down on his head.
He stands there, blankets draped over him and strewn across the floor, and thinks to himself, Could you be any more pathetic?
“I—sorry, I just, was grabbing some blankets…” He kneels down, carefully hiding his face, and begins picking them up and re-folding them.
He’s hastily wiping at his eyes when he realizes someone has knelt down to help him.
“No, it’s okay, I can—” Atsushi looks up.
“D-Dazai-san,” he squeaks in surprise. What is he doing?
“Dazai-san, stop. You have a broken arm.”
Dazai gives him a wink.
“Oh this? This is nothing. At least, it’s nothing compared to the pain of seeing a beautiful creature such as yourself in distress.”
Atsushi can’t help but sniffle, face screwing up.
Typical Dazai. Being kind, yet cruel, all at once.
He takes a deep breath and mentally steels himself.
“Dazai-san, really, I’m fine. And you can’t do much with one arm in a cast like that, anyway.”
He reaches out, meaning to help Dazai stand up, hand braced under Dazai’s elbow.
“Atsushi-kun, wait—”
Atsushi lands with a thwump back on his butt.
He stares down at the cast in his hand, then looks at the empty space where the rest of Dazai’s arm is supposed to be.
And screams.
 -
“I’m sorry! I’m really sorry!”
“I can’t believe you! You faked another injury?! To do what? To flirt with the nurses? What is wrong with you?!”
“Well I didn’t think you’d grab someone by their broken arm…”
“So this is my fault? Is that what you’re saying? Get out.”
“Wait, but—”
“You don’t actually have any pressing injuries, right? That means you can’t be here. Get out.”
“Wait, Atsushi-kun, I said I’m sorry—”
Atsushi is livid.
After tugging off Dazai’s fake cast and nearly having a heart attack, thinking he’d pulled someone’s arm off, Dazai revealed the rest of his arm, which he’d tucked up in his sleeve, and admitted that it was “just a prank”.
He’s had—
“Enough. I’ve had enough. If you don’t get out, now, I’m calling security.”
“I can explain—”
Atsushi turns and begins to stomp down the hallway.
“Wait, Atsushi—”
A hand grabs him by the elbow and he whirls, ready to yell again, when he stumbles off-balance and bangs his other elbow on the wall.
“Ow!”
“Ow.”
Atsushi opens his mouth, then pauses.
  That second “ow”? That hadn’t come from Atsushi.
Dazai and he stare at each other. Slowly, the pieces click together.
But—how can he be sure? What if—what if this is another prank?
...There’s only one way to find out.
Atsushi lifts a trembling hand—
“Atsushi-ku—”
—and does what he’s been aching to do for weeks now.
He slaps Dazai Osamu right across his pretty face.
Dazai stares at him, open-mouthed, hand reaching up to rub at his cheek.
Atsushi blinks right back at him in disbelief and lifts his own hand up to his own face, feeling where the echo of the force of his own slap radiates from.
He felt that.
He’d slapped Dazai, and in that very same moment, felt that very same pain on his own face.
“Oh my god.”
This can’t be real.
He lifts his hand again, and Dazai backs up.
He needs to check. Just one more time. To make sure.
“W-Wait, Atsushi-kun, I really don’t think that’s necessary—”
“It is.”
“There must be some other way—”
Atsushi pauses for a moment, thinking.
If they’re soulmates, and they share each other’s pain, then that means…
He narrows his eyes.
“Dazai-san.”
Dazai gulps.
“Oh, would you look at the time!” Dazai flashes him a fake smile and looks at his bare, watch-less wrist. “Wouldn’t want you to call security on me! I’ll just be going then, haha—”
“ Dazai-san. ” Atsushi’s suspicions have been all but confirmed. “Take off your clothes. Now.”
“I don’t really think that’s appropriate, Atsushi-kun—”
Atsushi stomps forward, and Dazai continues to back up, holding his hands up in a placating manner.
“Now, now, Atsushi-kun, we can talk about this—”
“Take off your clothes! Now!”
Dazai breaks into a flat out run, with Atsushi chasing after him.
“Get back here!”
True to his expectations, as Dazai runs, the pain in Atsushi’s side flares.
They skid to a stop at the end of the next hallway, panting, both of them clutching their sides.
Atsushi pushes Dazai up against the wall, tugging at his shirt.
“Atsushi-kun I think we’re moving a little too fast don’t you think—”
Atsushi pauses, and glares at Dazai’s bare stomach.
“Dazai-san. What is that.”
Dazai gulps.
“...Nothing.”
“I’ve been feeling it for two days, it isn’t nothing .”
“...may have run into a knife.” Dazai mumbles.
“You got STABBED?!” Atsushi screeches.
“If anything, it’s the knife’s fault.”
“Oh, I don’t doubt that it’s completely your fault for making someone want to stab you. What I want to know is why you felt the need to fake a broken arm to get in here when you’ve already been stabbed. ”
“It’s not even that bad—”
Atsushi screeches again, and grabs Dazai by his arm, dragging him back the way they came.
“That’s it, I’m bringing you to Yosano-sensei.”
Dazai suddenly stops, clinging onto Atsushi’s arm and dragging his feet.
“But I can only be healed by the gentle touch of your love!”
“Oh, stop that. Don’t be ungrateful. Though her methods of practice are...unique... Yosano-sensei has a very high success rate!”
“But I’d really much rather stay by your side—”
“You’re not getting out of this one, Dazai-san.”
Dazai grows more desperate, recalling all the rumors he’d heard about Yosano’s “treatment” and his past luck in dodging it.
“But you’ll have to suffer with me!”
“Gladly.”
They jerk to a stop.
Atsushi huffs in annoyance, ready to ask “What is it now”, when Dazai interrupts him.
“Even if I’m a compulsive liar with trust issues who sometimes can’t bring himself to get out of bed in the morning?”
Atsushi is taken aback.
“W-what?”
“Would you gladly suffer with me even though I’m annoying and I don’t know how much is too much and I embarrass you in front of everybody?”
Atsushi gapes at him, mouth opening and closing silently.
“I—”
He looks away, and tightens his grip on Dazai’s arm.
“...Yes. Even then. You’re my... soulmate, after all. But…”
Dazai watches him, studying his features in the fluorescent lighting.
“But?”
“...But even if you weren’t. I wouldn’t... couldn’t just leave you to suffer alone.”
The beginnings of a delighted grin begin to creep up onto Dazai’s face.
“You like me. You actually like me.”
“Don’t push it.”
The grin continues to grow as Atsushi begins to squirm uncomfortably.
“...Okay fine! Maybe I do like you. A little. But we really need to get that stab wound looked at so let’s just...get going, already.”
He blushes.
“Okay,” Dazai sing-songs.
Atsushi sighs, feeling the waves of exhaustion crashing over him.
“What am I going to do with you?”
“Well,” Dazai says, walking next to him amiably now, “I’m free Friday after five.”
Something warm pools in Atsushi’s gut, and a small smile sneaks its way onto his face.
“That works just fine for me.”
All of your thoughts about the Miyanos would be great! If you're up for a discussion on your headcanons about them~
I am so sorry for the late reply to this. I wanted to wait a week for the last ep of the Black Bunny case to see if there was any other scenes with the Miyano family and then school and life got in the way.... But here you are.
Starting with the parents I don't really have a lot for them yet since I've barely seen them but this is what I have
Atsushi is pretty quiet at home sort of a very gentle presence. But I suspect in academic circles he has more presence and is very willing to argue for what he believes in. Elena… Elena is harder to pin down. I think she can be very stern but is a softer person than say Mary. She would definitely treat someone even if she knew they couldn't pay. I suspect neither of them have many friends. Atsushi has a few from his time in academia, but Elena doesn't have many in Japan at least. That's not to say that she doesn't get along with people. She tends to be fairly friendly with everyone, but no one goes out of their way to deepen their relationship with her to become good friends, in part because she's foreign. I also think that most of her family is British and that she just has 1 Japanese grandfather. This is based mostly on the fact that Mary Sera is blond (and now Elena is as well much to my dismay).
Akemi I could go on about for a while honestly. She's a bit of a goofball around the people she's comfortable with but tends to present a more serious, quieter, even a little subservient personality to others. She learned that it helps to be a bit underestimated at times. But she is really kind and that shows through most of the time. She can hide it if she wants, for instance she hides that against Gin. She's also really smart likely was a grade A student in college. She's definitely way smarter than most people give her credit for. She's not off the charts like Shiho is and she doesn't tend to lend her brain to deductive reasoning like how most of our smart characters are shown to, more out of personal choice than the inability to. She would have been seen as a bright kid or a smart kid until Shiho was around. And still would be by people who didn't know her sister. I personally feel that she figured out Akai wasn't what he seemed early on, no later than 6months into knowing him. Probably about 3 months in she started to get suspicion and within a bit she put the pieces together. I suspect she is probably ironically the person who came to understand him best even though I don't think she knew his name. She might not have known he was FBI exactly but she definitely knew he was an undercover agent of some sort. And that was part of why she decided to stay with him (that and love but that's besides the point). She likes fashion, and prefers to keep a neat appearance. Fashion was one of the few things she and Shiho could talk about easily. I don't think Akemi ever resented Shiho, maybe felt that she was a little out of her reach and would be a little sad about that, but there was no envy. She might have even considered herself a little lucky when Shiho was shipped off for special education, and then probably felt guilty for feeling that way.
Moving onto Shiho so I don't drone on about Akemi…. Shiho is a lesbian and a late bloomer. Since she was working for the Org since she was 13 at least, it explains a lot about her I feel. Her head was full of science and research and never really noticed that she wasn't attracted to men, to the point where even now she's unaware of it. She assumes she's straight since that's seen as the default but isn't. I'd say along those lines that if she ever figures it out she'd identify with the term femme but I don't think she'll encounter that word necessarily in Japan. The deal with her and Kudou to me reads mostly as someone she was grasping onto in grief. She's not very good at handling her emotions I think. She could hide them in the Organization, but that was only because she was taught to be on guard around them either by Akemi or Elena. That and since she can be confused by them she sometimes simply doesn't even know how to show them. She cares about her appearance clearly and likes fashion. I think she and Mary Sera would get along really, really well, but that might not happen due to current circumstances and how they currently seem like they will meet. Shiho can also hold grudges really well and is high strung. She definitely enjoys being a kid more than Kudou does since for her, it's the first time she is getting to experience a lot of the stuff they're doing as kids. I suspect she was sent abroad for study by the organization early on when they recognized how smart she is, since Japan is stricter about skipping grades. She can definitely speak English. I think she will eventually forgive Akai, but it will be slow. And I don't think they will ever be friends. They'll learn to trust each other, and she'll realize she can rely on him if need be, but I don't think they'll ever be close. He'll definitely continue to help her in the future though.
I don't know if this is what you were looking for but this is what I've put together in bits and pieces. If there is something else you would like me to focus on or have a specific question about them feel free to ask! I'm happy to talk about any of them any time! (Especially Akemi; I love her so much).
