It took about two hours for Daina Taimina to find the solution that had eluded mathematicians for over a century. It was 1997, and the Latvian mathematician was participating in a geometry workshop at Cornell University. David Henderson, the professor leading the workshop, was modelling a hyperbolic plane constructed out of thin, circular strips of paper taped together. 'It was disgusting,' laughed Taimina in an interview.
A hyperbolic plane is 'the geometric opposite' of a sphere, explains Henderson in an interview with arts and culture magazine Cabinet. 'On a sphere, the surface curves in on itself and is closed. A hyperbolic plane is a surface in which the space curves away from itself at every point.' It exists in nature in ruffled lettuce leaves, in coral leaf, in sea slugs, in cancer cells. Hyperbolic geometry is used by statisticians when they work with multidimensional data, by Pixar animators when they want to simulate realistic cloth, by auto-industry engineers to design aerodynamic cars, by acoustic engineers to design concert halls. It's the foundation of the theory of relativity, and thus the closest thing we have to an understanding of the shape of the universe. In short, hyperbolic space is a pretty big deal.
But for thousands of years, hyperbolic space didn't exist. At least it didn't according to mathematicians, who believed that there were only two types of space: Euclidean, or flat space, like a table, and spherical space, like a ball. In the nineteenth century, hyperbolic space was discovered - but only in principle. And although mathematicians tried for over a century to find a way to successfully represent this space physically, no one managed it - until Taimina attended that workshop at Cornell. Because as well as being a professor of mathematics, Taimina also liked to crochet.
Taimina learnt to crochet as a schoolgirl. Growing up in Latvia, part of the former Soviet Union, 'you fix your own car, you fix your own faucet - anything', she explains. 'When I was growing up, knitting or any other handiwork meant you could make a dress or a sweater different from everybody else's.' But while she had always seen patterns and algorithms in knitting and crochet, Taimina had never connected this traditional, domestic, feminine skill with her professional work in maths. Until that workshop in 1997. When she saw the battered paper approximation Henderson was using to explain hyperbolic space, she realised: I can make this out of crochet.
And so that's what she did. She spent her summer 'crocheting a classroom set of hyperbolic forms' by the swimming pool. 'People walked by, and they asked me, "What are you doing?" And I answered, "Oh, I'm crocheting the hyperbolic plane."' She has now created hundreds of models and explains that in the process of making them 'you get a very concrete sense of the space expanding exponentially. The first rows take no time but the later rows can take literally hours, they have so many stitches. You get a visceral sense of what "hyperbolic" really means.' Just looking at her models did the same for others: in an interview with the New York Times Taimina recalled a professor who had taught hyperbolic space for years seeing one and saying, 'Oh, so that's how they look.' Now her creations are the standard model for explaining hyperbolic space.

Miles knows how to play the acoustic guitar when he was younger his dad taught him how to pay it.
When he went to the Spider society he didn't tell anyone because he was embarrassed.
Gwen knew how to play the drums and is in a band and play rock music.
Hobie does everything on his electric guitar and is always looking cool with it slug around him plus he using his guitar to fight villains.
Miles only knows how to play cute slow love songs and popular songs that are playing on the radio right now. He doesn't think / him/ playing any sort of instrument will ever make him look as cool as them so he never brings it up.
But one day when miles was at home Hobie (like always) snuck into his room to see what his sunflower was doing. Miles was on his chair back facing the window when he was playing "home" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zone. Slow and sweet as he was finger plucking and every word sounding like sweet honey. Hobie didn't dare make a sound, he didn't want miles to ever stop singing he sounded down right beautiful.
But when Hobie was trying to get closer to sunflower feeling a like a pirate getting lure the sweet songs of a siren he stepped on one of billies toys that was laying around on miles floor.
Miles immediately whips around ready to fight only to get hit with embarrassment right in the gut. He wanted to die right then a there.
Hobie immediately started fan Girling about how good he was then right after scolding him about him to telling him that he can play and hiding this amazing talent from him and completely off of the walls. Hobies colors started changing rapidly matching how fast he was talking and pacing around miles room.
Hobies cool and chill demeter changed to fan girl seeing her light long idol in person. New articles on his body was also changing so fast it was hard to keep up and trying to read it all.
Once Hobie finally claimed down he came to a realization. He can't tell anyone about this. Miles sounds to beautiful for this world and he doesn't want to share it with anyone he has to find this beautiful treasure from the world only he's ears alone to hear. This is an amazing discovery and no one can find it.
When he finally stops in his tracks he looks at miles still sitting on his chair look up at Hobie completely bewildered by the sudden outburst of Hobies reaction. Miles doesn't even know how to react.
How does miles react?

campy vampy bite bite 👀👀👀👀 (you know I love vampires and I have to ask for this one)
hehehehe, I'm so glad you asked!!!! I actually love this wip so much, it's my latest baby and I'm super excited about it. I think you will like what I've got planned 👀
From this tag game
Okay, so, I won't go into too much detail about who's who, but I will give some details regarding the world. The concept kind of surrounds the question: what if vampires have always existed and what would that look like in a modern-day society that is dictated by bureaucracy?
We have vampires and vampire hunters. There are also normal police officers, and different departments within the government that are put in place to basically... kill... vampires off. There are "normal" vampires, vampires that have been "turned" in the "wrong way"*, and there's even an underground drug network (including clubs where humans go to get their freak on with vampires). We also can't forget the corruption and of course, the murder mystery storyline. *I have planned out multiple ways for a human to be turned into a vampire
It's a pretty big story that I don't even have a full first chapter for lol. But I'm pretty excited to see where it'll go. It's a little bit of Romeo & Juliet meets Pride and Prejudice meets Beyond Evil meets vampiric lore. From my limited research, it would seem that Korea doesn't have its own vampire lore, so they tend to take inspiration from Western and Chinese cultures. I am also going to be doing this, as I think it'll be super fun to take inspiration from multiple cultures (and considering Joo Won canonically spent time in England, it would make sense to throw in a mix of European lore in there) It's rated E cause of violence, lots of blood, and... of course, sexual content 🤷‍♀️
At the moment, it's mainly just vibes, but here's a snippet from the opening scene.
The orchestra is bastardising Doga’s Gramophone. The main cause and culprit of this crime is the pianist, who’s torturing his keys a beat out of time, causing the whole piece to slug and be weighed down by his lack of urgency in tempo and finesse. Although, that might be the bourbon talking. Han Joo Won has been standing on the sidelines, listening to the god-awful mockery of classical music for what might be considered a rude amount of time. The ballroom - if one could call it that - did not possess the acoustics for such a piece, resulting in the already unflattering debacle sounding tinny and out of tune.
Under the finery of his designer suit jacket, Joo Won readjusts his perfectly tailored, perfectly pressed, perfectly starched, perfectly perfect embroidered waistcoat. He straightens his back with a slight ache in his lower spine, the heels of his Italian leather dress shoes are doing nothing for him other than causing his thighs to ache and his toes to throb. He’s been standing for far too long for such an event, which was a strategic decision he made almost forty minutes ago. He’s cleverly hidden from view behind a pompous flower arrangement; out of sight and hopefully away from his father’s ever-watching, ever-critical, ever-loathing gaze.
In this quiet corner by himself, with the bar still in sight, he can keep an eye on the table where his father currently resides. Including the exit, the musicians, and the majority of guests. A rather smart move on his behalf - if he did say so himself - as anyone could slip past security in this private event. Anyone could harm them.
There was another reason for his self-imposed isolation: he did not want to spend another second sharing a table with some of the most unintelligent and uninteresting people he’s ever been forced to be acquainted with. Han Joo Won is a man nearing his thirties and has met every kind of person there is to know in the circles he was born into. The list is predictable and finite, tedious and banal, ostentatious and pretentious, and Joo Won knows how to handle each and every one of them. He’s been trained his whole life for evenings such as this. -
I hope you like the detail of the embroidered waistcoat; I think I added that after one of our chats regarding Joo Won in pretty clothes 😊 Thank you for sending me this ask!! I really hope to make some progress with this fic because I think it's super fun and it would be great to share it with people

I've got so many headcanons about what Eddie Munson was like a kid. So just going to drop them here.
Tumblr media
Little Eddie sleeps with a night light. His dad doesn't approve, and his mother while she's still in the picture doesn't care one way or the other. His Uncle Wayne gives him a lava lamp to use instead, that way his dad can stop giving him the blues.
When he was five, his dad tried to teach him to ride a bike. He skipped over the tricycle most kids start out with and tried to teach him on a bike handed down from a work friend's child. The kid was older than Eddie, so the bike was too big. His dad pushed him around the trailer park for hours. Little Eddie is enjoying the time with his dad that isn't strained and keeps telling him his not ready for his dad to let go, so he can ride on his own.
His dad made him get buzz cuts because his hair reminded him too much of Eddie's mom, who left them both behind wanting a career for herself and having a child young was not ready for the responsibility.
Little Eddie's musical taste comes from both his parents, but he doesn't like to admit that his dad got him started on a love for metal.
Eddie's mom inspired him to learn guitar, she had an acoustic and used to play for him to help him sleep. He remembers those days well.
Little Eddie liked to catch frogs, slugs, and bugs. Keeping them jars because he wasn't allowed to have a pet. The Pet rock just didn't cut it. In his pursuit of having a pet, he also offered to watch or play with the neighbors dogs.
He gets letters and gifts from his mother for every holiday and his birthday. She comes to town to visit sometimes. She's out traveling the world, or that's what the letters say.
Little Eddie tried to find a shortcut around learning to tie his shoes and used the twist ties from bread bags to twist the laces together.
He and Jeff go way back and used to play pretend out in the woods, LARPing pretty much in the same way they would at a DnD table. Pretending to fight off trolls and go on grand adventures.
Eddie's dad, Wayne and Reefer Rick, were friends in high school and in the summer they take Eddie out fishing near Rick's house.
Little Eddie helped his dad get dates by being adorable with the 'single dad' routine at the park and at the store. It worked pretty well, but Eddie was never really keen on any other woman being around, as he still had hopes that his mom would come back one day.
Uncle Wayne used to give Eddie's dad money to put under Eddie's pillow from the tooth fairy. His dad didn't believe it in at first, but the two men got a laugh when Little Eddie started putting his friend's teeth under the pillow for extra money. He'd talk them into saving their teeth and giving them to him. He's always had a hustle.
Eddie's first guitar was the acoustic his mother left him. It was far too big, but he grew into it eventually.
He was the kind of kid that always came home filthy and found some kind of mischief.
Eddie was protective of his friends, and would try to be the big bad around bullies, but in reality he wasn't very tough at all, and it usually ended with all of them getting swirlies or wedgies from the bigger kids.
His dad taught him how to even the playing ground in a fight. Using ab object to protect himself.
His dad worked as a mechanic for a while as a side job, and Little Eddie used to help him work on cars on the weekends out in front of the trailer. Handing him tools and sitting in the cars while his dad showed him various things.
Before his mother left, she tried to be a good mom. She's pack him lunches for the day, cut him heart shaped sandwiches and leave him notes. She'd make him pancakes on Sundays and read to him before bed. Not only that, but she's the one who got him into fantasy.
Wayne would pick up Little Eddie early in the morning when he got home from the plant. Still in his footie pajamas to take him to the local dinner to eat breakfast together.
When he was 10 he took his dad car out on a joyride with his friends and almost made it completely out of Hawkins before getting it stuck in a ditch.
Little Eddie used to get in trouble at school for having too many doodles on his homework and not enough actual work.
Little Eddie was a fire alarm puller.

i really think people need to, at least once in their life, experience an orchestral concert, in person. the best headphones, speakers, surround sound systems will never capture the feeling of being in a concert hall when an orchestra is playing. when the acoustics are such that you can not only hear the music but feel it, feel it literally all around you, and you experience being fully inside the sound. it is a really magical experience that i’ve only experienced inside a concert hall and i really really wish more people could experience that, and understand that that experience is unique and important and irreplaceable. the best audio recreation equipment in the world will never replace the nuance and beauty of live performance and it’s truly a physical experience in the way that reproduced audio can never be

being a primarily Musicals guy getting more into Opera as of late, it really makes me kinda disappointed seeing how much One Single Production of a musical (typically its original broadway or occasionally west end run) becomes The definitive version of the show. and analysis of the show then tends to treat production and text as inseparable or even identical
like man. opera ppl...y'all have it so good...so many wildly different productions of the same (popular) operas are available to watch filmed, or at your local opera company. i can google don giovanni and find like 10 completely different productions at the click of a button, and none of them are Inherently more the "right" or "wrong" way of being don giovanni. i can have my own opinions on which ones i think work best (and boy do i), but the fact that so many different versions of the same show exist at all is a sign that you CAN have different interpretations of the same text -- and they're all still the same opera, fundamentally. production ≠ text ≠ the whole show
but with musicals i very much feel like, because of how The Industry works, One Production easily becomes The definitive vision of the show. certainly this has to do with the scarcity of filmed musicals when compared to opera (along with bootleg culture + the broader trouble of accessibility in musicals), as well as the (over)prevalence of replica productions, and i think also the age of most musicals is much younger than most operas so there's less time for new productions to be made let alone become popular. like i don't think it's a coincidence that oklahoma!, arguably the oldest true book musical, is the only musical i can think of where a radically nonreplica production gained such popularity and acclaim that it challenges the previous (Very well established!) interpretation of the text as the Definitive version of the show for many audience members. and because of that, it's one of the only shows where the analysis and discourse of the show makes a clear(ish) distinction between the text and the production itself. the vast majority of musicals do not receive the same treatment
it kinda bums me out knowing that musical ppl don't get the same exposure to new visions of a text outside the dominant broadway/west end blockbuster productions. i know regional theater exists and by gd do i feel like it is underrated in its importance to the development of theater literacy in audiences but unfortunately regional productions only VERY rarely get publicized outside of their regions, and therefore can't meaningfully contribute to conversations about a particular musical the same way a broadway production can.
idk i've Long felt that the way musicals become defined by a single production is a fault both of the industry and of the fandoms, and i've been a snob about that here for years. but getting more into opera lately has made me realize just how prevalent the issue is, bc opera Does Not operate the same way.

Jackson Reid Briggs — Out of Line (Legless)
Tumblr media
Out Of Line by Jackson Reid Briggs
The Saints’ Chris Bailey might have left us last year, but his spirit is alive and kicking on Out of Line, the second solo EP by fellow Brisbane native Jackson Reid Briggs. You can feel it in Briggs’ shout-it-all-down vocals, the steady chugging and thumping of his band’s rhythms, and the horn section-like surges of guitar that come flooding forward when he steps away from the mic.
Briggs, like Bailey, makes dejected and soulful garage punk that gives it everything it’s got, every step of the way, even when it’s mired by self-doubt. “Falling short on the numbers again/I know it doesn’t matter, but what do I know?,” he howls on the title track as the band chugs fixedly along in a mode reminiscent of fellow Saints disciples Eddy Current Suppression Ring. With a little help from a flanger around the two-minute mark, longtime collaborator Ryan Potter’s cutting rhythm guitar starts to clear space for Briggs to do his thing. As room opens up, Briggs’ guitar lashes out with increasing violence, his roiling tone colliding with cymbal punches like a live wire coming loose in a storm, smacking the pavement below and spraying sparks.
This is music that gives you the rush you need to get to where you’re going, or to get you away from where you came, a dynamic at play in the EP’s lyrics. “Chain me up and lock me down/tell everyone in the city I can’t leave,” Briggs demands on opener “Gone,” presumably about Melbourne, the city he’s called home for the better part of a decade since being “exiled” (as the bio sheet puts it) from Brisbane. But according to Briggs, the song is mostly about getting older. “You start to lose a lot of things as you grow older and sometimes you need to push a little harder to get them back on track,” he said in an email. Fittingly, when the guitars lock together coming into the chorus on “Gone,” it feels like the smooth shift of a bike’s chain to a higher gear, the accumulation of the power and momentum necessary to overtake whoever, or whatever, is in front of you.
Relentlessly propulsive rock is what Briggs has built his name on over the past eight or so years with backing band The Heaters. But on “Expectations,” the EP’s smeared-with-gloom second track, Briggs shows us a new side of himself, one that’s equally capable of bringing a sense of urgency to a more acoustic-based sound. Its melody unfurls more patiently than anything Heaters fans would expect, with a slippery, sitar-ish guitar line eking its way forward alongside bassist Cameron Hawes’ (of Martyr Privates and Slug Guts) dusty amble. Briggs’ voice also sounds different here, resembling Kitchen’s Floor’s Matt Kennedy in its vowel-stretching dreariness. “If you’ve ever got a problem with my lack of expectations/there’s a knife strapped to the back of the bedroom door,” he sings menacingly in the chorus as the song slithers along, leaving you more than a little concerned for his well-being.
What’s also concerning is that this EP remains a digital-only release — and adorned, on Briggs’ Bandcamp page, by artist Shannon Rush’s gorgeous Night People-esque cover art to boot. Somebody put these songs on a seven-inch, please!

who: @adrianmasri where: lecture hall when: early thursday afternoon
There was a simple solution to Rhia’s tardiness problem; adapt and wake up earlier than she would. Between nurturing a hangover and hating mornings, her first classes of the day knew to expect her several minutes after lectures began. She had yet to receive an absence notice this year but knew it was coming. Rhia slugged to her acoustics class with no sense of urgency, too preoccupied with her head fog to remember she hadn’t completed the reading for today.
The door creaked slowly open, revealing the inquisitive eyes of her peers who’d made it to class on time. Rhia didn’t so much as offer a cute, half-smile; instead, scanning the hall for an open seat. Without a second thought, she lumbered to the seat a few rows down, uttering small apologies as she passed other students in the row. She didn’t bother to give her neighbor a glance until she’d sat down, but she instantly recognized his dark helmet of curls. She looked up at Adrian’s face, grimacing at the reminder of how poorly she treated him.
Did he hold it against her? Did he even think about her? Rhia knew they’d shared a class together but figured it was big enough they would never cross paths. Of course she waltzed right to him and sat down like they were casual acquaintances. Maybe that was what they were reduced to now because of her. She set her bag in between her legs, turning to face the stage and failing to ignore him in her peripheral. After a few prolonged moments, she turned to Adrian again, peeking over to get his attention. “Hey,” she greeted in a soft whisper. “Did you- uh.... do the study guide?”

Shawna Virago is a “Tranimal”
Let’s start with the question that several of you may be asking yourself, “Who is Shawna Virago?”
Shawna Virago is a transgender punk rock goddess who writes acoustic folk punk songs that blend the tenacity of Johnny Rotten in all his glory with the acoustic punk sensibilities of early Against Me! Shawna was an in-your-face out transgender rocker before it was acceptable by the general public. We…
