#90s Will Smith? epic.

tom's show the night manager is getting seasons 2 and 3!
one of the reasons i sometimes don't fit in that well in fandoms is that i don't usually care enough about actors to follow their projects :( Except for that period where I decided to watch every Will Smith film and insist on his genius as proved by his choice of such seminal movies as Hancock, I Am Legend With The Wrong Ending And Therefore Without The Moral Which Was The Entire Point Of The Story, and indeed pretty much anything he has starred in since roughly the year 2000. but i wasn't actually in any fandom related to a Will Smith project so does that even count?
(i *was* a bit tempted to find and watch High Rise because i like the works of JG Ballard BUT after obtaining a copy of the book i found that I couldn't actually bring myself to ruin my perfect state of knowing that particular Ballard novel only as "the one that [1987 Doctor Who story] was based on" and it turns out that this extends to any film version as well.)
but i hope you enjoy getting more of a thing you liked, Anon :)

Blink-182 exemplified the noughts. No, I should be more thorough – they epitomized the rock music of the late 90's and the noughts. A funny thing happened back then, because the popular styles of the idiom didn't really seem different than what the pop did at the time. Allow me to explain, before you protest this – the media during the period sort of put the battle lines between, say, Britney Spears and Limp Bizkit. At the end of the day there was only one winner here, i.e. the house. I mean, Crazy Town, to give you an example, weren't really that radically different from the zeitgeist of the era, since they were basically a human algorithm that mixed what was successful through the popular idea of alternative rock. Then again, this type of groups are needed.

My personal top albums of all time
If anyone who respects my music opinions is interested, IN NO ORDER because I can't choose between my babies. Also, warning, it's mostly gonna be albums from the 90s. Only the albums that are described as Gothic Rock, Darkwave (Neoclassical or not), Deathrock and Ethereal Wave are goth, the rest are some other flavor of dark alternative.
Aégis, by Theatre of Tragedy (1998)
Exquisite Gothic Rock, despite the band usually playing Metal, with themes of mostly Greco-Roman mythology with some other European folklore thrown in. The most angelic and soft soprano vocals delivered by Liv Kristine with baritone whispers delivered by Raymond. Ethereal yet complex atmospheres with soft guitars, strong bass, poetic lyrics in Shakespearean English.
Highlights: Cassandra, Venus, Poppæa, Bacchante.
Inferno, by Lacrimosa (1995)
Gothic Rock that flirts slightly with Metal in some tracks. This is when they made the jump from Neue Deutsche Todeskunst (basically late 80s/early 90s German Darkwave except it's a little weirder than most other Darkwave at the time) to more Rock-based styles of music, as well as the first album Anne Nurmi was featured in. Tilo's best studio vocal performance in my opinion. Beautiful lyrics about love, passion, devotion, and the end of the world, could only be written by a goth guy with a gift for poetry who just fell in deep love. Only iffy track is Copycat but even that one is still a classic among fans if only because of its high energy, and killer guitars, bass and percussion.
Highlights: Schakal, Vermächtnis der Sonne, No blind eyes can see, Kabinett der Sinne.
Passion's Price, by Diva Destruction (1999)
Diva Destruction's debut, from back when Darkwave was actually dark and dreary in sound. Songs about heartbreak, betrayal, abuse and love, in the band's most musically complex and hauntingly atmospheric album. A definite classic with nothing but great track after great track.
Highlights: The Broken Ones, Snake, Prey, Glare.
Selected Scenes from the End of the World, by London After Midnight (1992)
Some of the best Gothic Rock to have ever come out, in my opinion. Deep, rich, dark, mysterious, sensual, macabre, romantic (arguably too romantic even by 90s goth standards as the album apparently got criticized for being almost entirely love songs? Wtf). The song that introduced me to goth in February of 2007 is in this album and it's the reason why I never looked back.
Highlights: The Black Cat, Claire's Horrors, Sacrifice, Spider and the Fly.
Annwyn, beneath the Waves, by Faith and the Muse (1996)
Ethereal Wave royalty in maybe not their most iconic album, but definitely the one closest to my heart by them. Despite goth music being associated with darkness in the minds of most, this album is full of glittering light in the most poetic and heartfelt way possible. The vocals are soft and tender when they need to be, delivered by Monica Richards, or firm and epic when needed, as delivered by William Faith. The lyrical themes are full of Celtic folklore, love, hope, magic and a feeling of reclamation of nature and an ancestral past (but not in like, a white supremacist way, I promise).
Highlights: Annwyn, beneath the Waves, The Hand of Man, The Silver Circle, Rise and Forget.
Treasure, by Cocteau Twins (1984)
Walking a thin line between Ethereal Wave and Dreampop (as they're pioneers in both genres). Some tracks are darker than others, but they're all equally delightful, full of beauty and a dreamy gaze hovers over every single song, all of which contain some of the most heavenly vocals in the scene. One of Robert Smith's favorite albums (he also really like Diva Destruction's debut!). If you're into more relaxing and atmospheric music, this might be your intro to goth.
Highlights: Beatrix, Persephone, Pandora (for Cindy), Lorelei.
Anthology, by Nosferatu (2006)
Legendary Gothic Rock band among those of us who enjoy a campier vampiric goth sound that takes itself too seriously, and deliciously so. Yes, I know I'm cheating by going with a compilation album, sue me. It's simply a collection of their best tracks and I honestly couldn't choose between all their actual albums, so there!
Highlights: Inside the Devil, Lucy is Red, Rise, Witching Hour.
Es reiten die Toten so schnell (or: The Vampyre Sucking at his Own Vein), by Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows (2003)
Probably the gothiest and most elite Neoclassical Darkwave out there. Deeply macabre, equally horrific and beautifully crafted, with expressive and dramatic vocals, themes of vampirism and death masking more human subjects such as social rejection (Anna Varney-Cantondea is a trans woman/transfeminine person who's battled suicidality and depression from a very young age), depression, gay/trans desire, and suicidality. It truly is a masterpiece of macabre and neoclassical goth.
Highlights: The Feast of Blood, Holy Water Moonlight, Baptisma, Dead Souls.
Blood Death Ivory, by Angelspit (2008)
Probably one of the few modern Industrial bands who have thoroughly kept the spirit of early Industrial alive, fashioned after greats such as Skinny Puppy and Die Form, especially in the 00s when the Industrial scene heavily turned to more superficial lyrics based on the aesthetics of cyberpunk art rather than its subversive content. The music is aggressive, simultaneously animalistic yet robotic with a touch of demonic, rarely ever without smartly phrased critiques of capitalism and consummerism. At this point in time the band was a duo between Amelia Arsenic/Destroyx and Zoog Von Rock. It's definitely some edgelord shit (affectionate), but by no means in a vapid, only-for-shock-value way.
Highlights: Skinny Little Bitch, Lust Worthy, Devilicious, Jugular.
Alles für dich, by Grausame Töchter (2012)
Some of the most dynamic, deliciously quirky, sexual, hyper and twisted Dark Electro bands currently making music. The lead vocalist and lyricist of the band, Aranea Peel, is a lesbian dominatrix, fetish model, trained ballet dancer, and lover of Weimar republic era artistry who absolutely imprints lots of dark flapper energy into the band's music and imagery. The lyrics are unabashedly perverted, kinky, sapphic and fucked up. Her singing is nothing short of chef's kiss worthy, always expressive and strange, but with pristine execution and technique.
Highlights: Tanz für dich, TABU, Therapie für dich, ICH DARF DAS!
The Astonishing Eyes of Evening, by Cinema Strange (2002)
KINGS of 00s Deathrock with touches of Dark Cabaret influences, as inescapable in the goth scene in the 00s as She Past Away and its many copycats are now, and for very good reason. Delightfully macabre, not the first to use ghostly androgynous vocals but certainly one of the bands who better utilize that style of vocals. Imo, this and their homonymous album are must-listens for people interested in the goth music scene in general, but especially those interested in Deathrock. Truly Halloween turned into an album.
Highlights: Tomb Lilies, Catacomb Kittens, 'Ere the Flowers Unfold, Legs and Tarpaulin.
Opheliac, by Emilie Autumn (2006)
Literally music for mentally unstable sapphic girls with a poet's soul and flare for both irony and intense earnest feeling. It's a very original combination of Synthpop, Punk Cabaret, and Neoclassical music, with influences of Industrial and Darkwave. It's all masterfully crafted by classically trained violinist, poet, writer, actress, and somewhat of a burlesque performer with a rich alto voice; Emilie Autumn. She wrote this album after suffering medical abuse at a mental hospital after a suicide attempt brought on by an abortion and emotionally abusive relationship. I'm not exaggerating when I say this album saved my life and also changed me as a person.
Highlights: Opheliac, Liar, The Art of Suicide, 306.
Of the Want Infinite, by Requiem in White (1995)
You don't often hear of bands combining Deathrock and Ethereal Wave as they're often perceived as the polar opposite ends of the spectrum of goth music; Deathrock being the goth subgenre closest in sound and idiosyncrasy to punk, and Ethereal Wave being one of the goth subgenres furthest from goth's punk roots. Add in an operatic soprano and you get... Some of THE best, most underrated goth bands of the 90s. Dramatic, ethereal, creepy, elegant, ghostly and complex, with incredible vocals. Truly a pity they only released one album and a couple of EPs.
Highlights: Everlasting Peace, Beneath the Leaves, My Shame, Acanthus.
Agony of the Undead Vampire Part II, by Two Witches (1992)
Truly another giant of vampiric Gothic Rock, absolute 90s legends and Finland's most iconic goth band. Themes of vampirism, occasionally anti-Christianity, sex, sensuality and kink abound. The vocals might put some people off, but it's definitely worth it.
Highlights: The Hungry Eyes, The Omen, Mircalla, We All Fall Down.
Mors Syphilitica, by Mors Syphilitica (1996)
Requiem in White may have disbanded after their first proper album, but two out of its three core band members, then spouses Lisa and Doc Hammer, went on to form pure Ethereal Wave act Mors Syphilitica right after and while it's generally less dark and spooky than its predecesor band, they're still a delight to the ears.
Highlights: The Woman Who Believed, Fell a Dance, The Vain Stroke, Below the Baleful Star.
Beyond the Veil, by Tristania (1999)
I've raved about this album so many times. Just... THE definitive Gothic Metal album to me. The lyrics, the choir of sopranos (aka all Vibeke Stene and her rich, sensual, dark, gorgeous voice), the perfect growling, the somber baritone vocals, the perfectly crafted guitar riffs (no guitar salad, all expressive and precisely timed), the exciting epic percussion, the piano, the violin solos, THE SYMPHONICS. Oh, my God. There's not one second wasted in the entire album, and I'm not being hyperbolic, I mean that. Truly the perfect Gothic Metal album.
Highlights: Beyond the Veil, Angina, Heretique, Opus Relinque.
Serpentine Gallery, by Switchblade Symphony (1995)
Tbh all of Switchblade Symphony's discography is fantastic, but their debut truly is a masterpiece. Creepy ragdoll vibes all over, great vocals, rich composition, poetic yet accessible lyrics. If you're into a more kindergoth vibe (Wednesday Addams, creepy dolls, child-like or even lolita-esque looks), this might be the band for you.
Highlights: Clown, Mine Eyes, Dollhouse, Bad Trash.
Vampyre Erotica, by Inkubus Sukkubus (1997)
The other band that introduced me to goth in 2007 and got me to never look back. Though the first song by them I ever listened to, Samhain, isn't from this album, this album is the one that truly got me hooked for life. Vampiric, sensual, decadent and dark. It has everything including really sweet vocals.
Highlights: Vampyre Erotica, Danse Vampyr, Hell-Fire, Heart of Lilith.

May I ask what reference materials you have at your disposal?
This list includes only books about monsters that I own and have used for the Codex at some point. It does not include books I've gotten from libraries (I have access to an excellent university library and one of the best public library systems in the country), nor does it include RPG books or books about science and nature. We'd be here all day, and this list already took like 90 minutes to collate.
A Field Guide to the Little People—Arrowsmiths and Moore Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials; Barlowe’s Guide to Fantasy—Barlowe The Dictionary of Demons—Belanger Monsters in Print—Benedict Ghosts Monsters and Demons of India—Bhairav and Khonna The Mwindo Epic—Biebuyck and Mateene, ed. Appearing on this list does not necessarily constitute a recommendation. Carol Rose's books, for example, has a lot of gaps and are responsible for a number of myths and misconceptions that have circulated around the internet. And A Wizard's Bestiary by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart is more worthwhile as a curiosity than as reference material.
There are a lot of internet sources, of course, but I'm linking my top choices. If you're not already aware of A Book of Creatures and Yokai.com, you need to be.

In the modern AU what are Louis' and Lestat's favorite books, movies, shows, atc? Are they in any fandoms? What about when they were younger? How cringe were they?
This is such a cute question omg
Adult Louis is an avid but secret watcher of trashy reality TV. His favorite is Real Housewives or anything on TLC, but he's been known to enjoy an episode or two of KUWTK, Love Island, and Big Brother. Lestat also likes these because it's hot people being mean, one of his favorite things. Cooking shows are Louis' favorite little treat for bad mental health days too. He's not picky, but it has to be something soothing.
He'll tell you about the long-winded classics he's read until you're ready to blow your brains out, but he is also a harlequin romance enjoyer and semi-regular erotic novel consumer (he thinks it's more respectable than porn). You couldn't waterboard that out of him though.
His favorite movies are mostly romances, especially older ones like Casablanca, Roman Holiday, and Gone with the Wind (and Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast like his canon counterpart), but also 90s tearjerkers like Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient, and Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet (also like in canon).
If you ask though, his favorite movie is Citizen Kane. Shut up Lestat.
His taste in media has been pretty consistent throughout his life. Louis is nothing if not a lonely, daydreamy little guy in every universe, so he was definitely watching those same movies as a teenager with his nose pressed against the TV after everyone went to bed, wanting to feel love and be loved like that. He'd watch those mind-numbing historical epics like Cleopatra and Ben-Hur too. He loved the history and spectacle, but also the fantasy of it, the strength and escapism he wanted for himself.
In reality though, he was definitely writing porny gay fanfic in a super secret notebook, but weird Louis shit like Dorian Gray/Henry Wotton and Maurice Hall/Alec Scudder. It was kinda sad.
The soundtrack to his crying and gay porn writing was basically just The Smiths, The Cure, Tori Amos, and depressing 60s folk albums (Simon & Garfunkel got a lot of play time in his bedroom). He still likes that sort of thing, but 90s singer-songwriter and acoustic sort of confessional songs are his favorite.
I think for both of them this post applies as far as music taste.
Lestat is also an appreciator of shitty media, but he likes so-bad-it's-good franchise movies like Twilight, Superman, Transformers, and Saw. Whether he likes them ironically or sincerely is anyone's guess. At the very least he throws in some decently respectable choices like Star Wars.
He's also a big slasher guy, especially the iconic killers like Michael Meyers, Freddy Kreuger, Leatherface etc. Louis pretends not to like them, but he always lingers in the living room when they're on. On the flip side, screwball comedies are a favorite of his as well, the highest repeat rate going to Dumb and Dumber, Anchorman, The Big Lebowski, and Strange Brew. He's got t-shirts for them too.
Soaps are his go-to for TV, the longer and more convoluted the better. He knows ALL the Days of Our Lives lore and he's seen every episode of Grey's Anatomy twice. He's going to explain it to you if you let him. And if Louis complains, Lestat can reminds him he knows all the Kardashian-Jenner baby names and watches the old episodes of Project Runway Lestat pirated in the bathroom with the door locked.
Reading independently isn't a big thing for Lestat, but he loves to be read TO. High and historical fantasy are his favorites, and Louis has read him all the LotR and Outlander books out loud during their cuddle hours.
He's an easy sell for music, really anything extremely stimulating. His favorites are glam and 80s rock like Bowie, Queen, T. Rex, New York Dolls, Kiss, and AC/DC, but also glittery hyperpop-ish stuff like Grimes, Poppy, Charli XCX, and Rico Nasty. Whatever scratches his little rodent brain. His playlists are sensory overload and they make Louis shake like a chihuahua.
Teenage Lestat was surprisingly subdued because of his home life. He liked to watch movies and television that took him out of reality and fed his fantasies of running away and becoming a star. Velvet Goldmine and Party Monster were frequent fliers, but lots of fantasy and sci-fi that was an escape and daydream fodder as well.
Most of his music was showtunes, all songs he could sing under his breath while he imagined he was a beloved theater actor instead of a kid trapped in rural France.

Hey Brian! Massive fan of Botch, Russian Circles and Sumac!
I was just curious to find out what are some of your favourite books?
Hope to see Russian Circles and Sumac over the pond again in Scotland!
Cheers!
Oh hey! Thanks!
I love Scotland. My genealogy-obsessed aunt insists our family is descended from Robert the Bruce. Who knows if that's true, but got Bruce as my middle name.
Favorite books? Oh man, this is gonna make me look so uncool.
For pure entertainment, I'd have to go with Stephen King's The Stand. I've read it four or five times over the course of my life. It's just a great epic good-vs-evil story, with some good social commentary sprinkled throughout.
As a teenager who discovered the joys of "classics" in the '90s, I have a soft spot for a lot of the 20th century writers that folks on Twitter love to dunk on these days. But fuck it... Kerouac's Duluoz Legend series made me realize that sometimes the way you write about something can be more interesting than what you're actually writing about.
And yeah, Hemingway was definitely saddled with some unfortunate prejudices, but The Sun Also Rises struck upon a very specific kind of melancholy that I haven't found anywhere else. I was talking about it with a couple of friends and there seemed to be a clear division between people who loved the book and people who were unimpressed: all the people who loved it were folks in touring bands. I think there's just something about that experience of parting ways with someone after being in close companionship in unfamiliar territories for a brief period of time that Hemingway captured perfectly.
As long as we're talking about melancholy and classic authors that folks love to hate on: J.D. Salinger's Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters completely floored me. You can skip the Seymour novella that comes bundled with it. But holy shit, I don't understand why Catcher in the Rye gets all the attention when Raise High is right there next to it on the book shelf.
And fuck it. I loved Infinite Jest and I think about passages from the book all the time. I am a walking stereotype of a Gen X male. Sorry.
More recently? I love Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I love Karl Ove Knausgaard's My Struggle series (granted, part six was a bit of a slog). I love Jorge Luis Borges' Collected Fictions. Patti Smith's Just Kids and M Train. Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.
Every once in a blue moon I'll decide to tackle something "difficult" and the experience is always rewarding: Tolstoy's War & Peace (not actually difficult, just long), James Joyce's Ulysses (get a reader's guide and treat it like a puzzle), Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (the cashier who sold it to me gave the best advice: at some point you'll have no idea what is goin on... just accept that you're lost and enjoy the ride). While these books are a struggle, they definitely imprint something on the brain. They stay with you.
In the last couple of years, I've really gotten into Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's work, particularly Half of a Yellow Sun, though Americanah and Notes on Grief also bowled me over too. Finally got around to reading Roberto Bolaño's The Savage Detectives and loved it... currently have 2666 in the queue. And I've really been enjoying the stuff put out by a small publisher from the UK called Broodcomb Press that all seems to be in a creepy rustic folk-horror tradition, and I suspect that it's really just one writer working under a series of aliases.
So there ya have it. Kinda basic; nothing crazy. But the classics are classics for a reason, I guess.

Collingwood: 2023 AFL Premiers
Tumblr media
IT CAME down to the last minute. We wanted the best and we got the best.
In one of the hottest Grand Final days ever recorded, with the two best teams of the season, in one of the best seasons in recent times, we got perhaps the best ever premiership decider.
And now it's official: Collingwood is the best team of 2023, with the Magpies edging out Brisbane by four points on Saturday in a Grand Final epic in front 100,024 people at the MCG.
In a game full of remarkable highlights, brutal toughness, brilliant goals, spectacular individualism and hard-nosed team ethos, it was Craig McRae's men who claimed this year's premiership, winning 12.18 (90) to 13.8 (86).
Collingwood's triumph breaks a 13-year drought without a premiership and sees them claim their 16th VFL/AFL flag, joining rivals Essendon and Carlton with a competition-leading 16 premierships.
With five-and-a-half minutes to play, Lions star Charlie Cameron looked set to snatch the flag for Brisbane when his snap put his side four points ahead. But Collingwood superstars Nick Daicos and Jordan De Goey teamed up to immediately grab back the lead, with Daicos' swift handball to De Goey giving the Pies' No.2 space to bomb it from 50 metres in the 10th lead change of the game.
It restored the Pies' four-point lead, before Steele Sidebottom marked on the wing and was dragged to the ground by Lion Jarrod Berry. A 50-metre penalty was awarded and the Pies veteran slotted a goal from the 50-metre line to give the Pies a 10-point break with 4:23 remaining.
The game looked over before some Hugh McCluggage magic saw Joe Daniher snap a goal to get the Lions within four points with 93 seconds to play, before the Pies ground out the last moments to clinch an extraordinary flag.
Five years after the heartbreak of the 2018 Grand Final loss, the Magpies got their moment in pulsating fashion, with heroes all over the ground.
Bobby Hill kicked four goals from 18 disposals in a career-best game to win the Norm Smith Medal, while Nick Daicos had a stellar afternoon, with the young superstar having a game-high 29 disposals and a goal to end his special second season.
McRae's men have become the kings of the close contest over the past two years and did it on the biggest stage of all.
After legendary rockers KISS put in a super pre-match performance, the fireworks kept coming right until the final siren.
Daicos kicked off a frenetic first term, slotting the opening goal after a free kick. The sensation had started forward in his second game back from injury, with the Pies having all the early running. They skipped to a two-goal lead before Brisbane had caught its breath, with Zac Bailey's two first-quarter goals helping edge the Lions ahead.
The first goal was good – an on-the-run banger that sailed through – but the second was an all-timer, seeing the Lions star smother Mason Cox, collect the ball, evade two Collingwood tacklers and then snap it through. The Lions had jumped to a three-point advantage before again the Pies took back control, with a De Goey long bomb after the siren establishing Collingwood's 10-point lead at the first change.
If we thought the first quarter was good, there was the most epic of second quarters to come. During the quarter-time break, the MCG speakers blasted John Denver's Take Me Home, Country Roads, igniting three crowd singalongs.
It also lit the fuse for Cameron, who was making them sing for him soon enough with two quick goals and another goal assist to get the Lions firing.
Brisbane's efforts to keep the ball at ground level in defence had Collingwood unsettled and their fleet of small forwards went to work, with Deven Robertson busy, Bailey terrific and Lincoln McCarthy kicking a cracker from the pocket to put them 13 points ahead.
But the Magpies weren't ready to stop there. In a first half that will rank alongside any Grand Final for highlights and quality goals, Hill then put his mark on the game – figuratively and literally. He kicked three goals for the quarter and by half-time had a career-best four, including a left-foot snap and a huge screamer inside-50 that he converted.
Again it was some Daicos magic – weaving through traffic, slowing down, speeding up, spotting an option and hitting his target – that set up the final goal of the half with his 19th disposal before the main break as Brody Mihocek put the Magpies up by six points.
After full throttle footy in the second term, the third quarter hit arm wrestle territory. Collingwood was kept to 0.6 until the final two minutes, when Hill smartly spotted Scott Pendlebury open 30 metres from goal. Having watched his side surrender the lead, the Pies champion's never-in-doubt kick put his side ahead by four points heading into the last quarter.
The Lions conceded a goal in the final two minutes of the term in each of the first three quarters, and it proved a costly momentum shifter at the end of the third after they had otherwise been on top with their efficiency.
Daniher was a big part of Brisbane's push, with the key forward having an important day, helping set up Robertson's crucial goal in the third quarter with his contested mark on the wing.
The Lions had their opportunities at the start of the fourth but Collingwood's mantra throughout the year has been to play every single minute.
It's the mantra underneath McRae's uber-positive, open-door, belief-is-everything philosophy that has sealed them a premiership cup, coming to the fore when they needed it most.

In April 1974, the Native American members of the group Redbone basked in the success of their million-selling gold single “Come and Get Your Love.” The single was a Top-Five hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and hit #1 in several U.S. cities across the country. A Top-Five single—what did that kind of success mean for you as a Native artist in those days? It was something I had already envisioned in my head. I had always loved Native American chants and music and I knew If I worked hard I would come up with something that would appeal to everybody. How did the song “Come and Get Your Love” come about? Lolly called me up at 3 am; we had just come back from Philadelphia from doing a tour and he said “Pat, can you come over? I think I have a great idea for a song. I want you to come and help me write it.” I was pretty tired and I said, “Oh man, I am not going to come over there and work on this unless we write together.” He said of course. My girlfriend and I went over there at 3 AM and we listened to it – it was nice, but it wasn’t structured. I think it was 11 minutes long. I sat in the music room and worked on it, structured it with a bassline and cut it to 6 minutes. We recorded it in the studio, and when it came out, there was only one name on it – Lolly Vegas. (Laughs) I said, “Wait a minute man, I got up at 3 in the morning with you, that’s my bassline!” When the record came out they wouldn’t play it because they said it was too long. Michael Atkinson, the head of promotions at CBS-Epic, came down to Whiskey-a-Go-Go when we were performing with Ronnie Milsap, and he said, “Pat If you go into the studio and break this down to 3 minutes, you’ll make it to number one.”

BA4rSO-h9Io abhioors 1+2+8+9+50+50+80+90=290 290+4+9=303 Area code 303 is located in central Colorado and covers Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Thornton, Arvada, Westminster, and Centennial.
Room 303 was a room within the Heart O' The City Hotel from Mega City in the Matrix. It contained a hardline, and so was a location that redpills could use to safely escape from the Matrix. Trinity conducted her surveillance of Thomas Anderson from a laptop computer in this room. She was forced to flee after the Agents cut the room's hardline, forcing her to find another exit. Neo was directed to the same hotel room to escape from the Matrix and pursuing Agents. However, Agent Smith ambushed Neo and shot him before he could reach the phone there. After defeating Smith, Neo escaped the Matrix using the phone in Room 303 before the Nebuchadnezzar disabled the Sentinels, and itself, by using EMP. Sixty years later, Neo's Modal contains a simulated reenactment of Trinity's escape from the Agents in this room which is witnessed by Bugs. The number "303" appears to be an allusion to the character Trinity, whose name in Christian theology defines the three-in-one nature of the single Christian God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This allusion is supported by Trinity kissing the lifeless Neo, whose life functions return as Neo transfigures into the One after exiting the room. (Fandom.com)

Taylor Swift Just Revealed How the Betty-James Love Triangle Ends The singer tells all in Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions on Disney+. By Abby Gardner November 25, 2020 “So I've been kind of in my head calling the girl from ‘August’ either Augusta or Augustine. I've just been naming her that in my head," Swift explains in the film. “What happened in my head is that ‘Cardigan’ is Betty's perspective from like 20 to 30 years later looking back on this love that was this tumultuous thing. In my head, I think Betty and James ended up together, right? In my head, she ends up with him, but he really put her through it.” She continues, “But ‘August’ was obviously about the girl that James had this summer with, right? So she seems like she's a bad girl, but really she's not a bad girl. She's like really a sensitive person who fell for him and she was trying to seem cool and seem like she didn't care because that's what girls have to do. And she was trying to let him think that she didn't care, but she really did and she thought they had something very real. And then he goes back to Betty. So the idea that there's some bad villain girl in any type of situation that, like, takes your man is really a total myth because that's not usually the case at all. Everybody has feelings and wants to be seen and loved—and just, like, Augustine, that's all she really wanted too.” - Taylor Swift (Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions) https://www.glamour.com/story/taylor-swift-just-revealed-how-the-betty-james-love-triangle-ends
Tonight I Can Write (The Happiest Lines Remix) - Pablo Neruda ft. Taylor Swift Pablo Neruda: Love is so short, forgetting is so long. Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her. Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer and these the last verses that I write for her.
Taylor Swift: "I said remember this feeling I passed the pictures around Of all the years that we stood there on the sidelines Wishing for right now We are the kings and the queens You traded your baseball cap for a crown When they gave us our trophies And we held them up for our town And the cynics were outraged Screaming, "This is absurd" 'Cause for a moment, a band of thieves In ripped up jeans got to rule the world
Long live the walls we crashed through How the kingdom lights shined just for me and you I was screaming, "Long live all the magic we made" And bring on all the pretenders, I'm not afraid Long live all the mountains we moved I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you I was screaming, "Long live the look on your face" And bring on all the pretenders One day we will be remembered
Hold on to spinning around Confetti falls to the ground May these memories break our fall Will you take a moment? Promise me this That you'll stand by me forever But if, God forbid, fate should step in And force us into a goodbye If you have children someday When they point to the pictures Please tell them my name Tell them how the crowds went wild Tell them how I hope they shine"

Remember how the last movie had us glued to our seats with its insane stunts and laugh-out-loud moments? Well, "Ride or Die" promises to deliver that same explosive energy, but with a twist: this time, Miami's finest are on the run! Yep, you read that right. Lowrey and Burnett are dodging bullets and causing mayhem, but from whom exactly? The trailer keeps that under wraps, but you know it's gonna be epic. Will Smith looks like he's back in top form, delivering his signature cocky charm as Mike Lowrey. And Martin Lawrence? The man hasn't lost a beat when it comes to his hilarious reactions and witty one-liners. These two together are pure comedic gold, and it's gonna be amazing to see them trade insults and take down bad guys in style. Speaking of bad guys, the trailer hints at a whole new crew of villains for our heroes to face. We see some serious firepower, explosions galore, and enough car chases to make your head spin. But with Mike and Marcus on the case (even if they are technically fugitives), you just know justice will be served, Miami style. One thing the trailer doesn't reveal is whether we'll see Mike Lowrey's son in this film. Remember in the last movie how we got a glimpse of him all grown up? It would be cool to see him interact with his dad, especially if Mike's in hot water. Maybe there's a chance for a family team-up? Only time will tell! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FYlvGAf-iM So, mark your calendars, movie fans! "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters on June 7th, 2024, and it looks like it's gonna be a wild ride. Get ready for non-stop action, laugh-out-loud moments, and the return of the iconic duo that defined 90s action cinema. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back together, and they're ready to prove that some things, like bad boys and good times, never go out of style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOd-uGLIaJo Read the full article

My 2023 in retrospect...
Well, that year is almost over. Here's my story of 2023.
This year marked the 30th Anniversary of my time at the Surrey Downs Child Care Centre which I didn't like a little at first as I felt like a prisoner but I soon got the hang of it later. Also, my first video game, 'Super Mario All-Stars' for the SNES hit store shelves 30 years ago too but didn't get it until Christmas a year later at that time.
In January, I went to the St Kilda Mangrove Boardwalk for the first time in many years. It looked a bit different compared with last time I looked.
In February, I got a Lightburn Zeta coffee mug and saw a show at the Garden Of Unearthly Delights all by myself for the first time in my life! Then later, I saw Luke Million perform music from his first album 'Gina The Synth Cat' on his handy keytar! Then at the end, I got lucky and managed to grab one of his drumsticks! From a shop in Chinatown, I bought a Pikachu-design bathroom spout extension which slides onto most horizontal spouts!
In March, I got my Knight Rider Historians tee-shirt showing the GMC Prime Mover & Trailer which is now currently being restored. Went to the new TK-Maxx store at Churchill Centre in Kilburn and tried both 'Bard' & 'Barbarian' burgers from Carl's Jr who have teamed up with the board game based film, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Theives. After a remarkable 25 Years, Ash Ketchum's quest to become a true Pokemon Master came to an epic conclusion with the callback mini-series, 'Aim To Be A Master'. He and Pikachu came a long, long way together through the low times and the high. We still saluted him, celebrated him and praised him like we should.
In April, I went to a LEGO exhibit at the Museum Of Adelaide, then to a car show at Echunga Oval and then to an Easter carnival on Ridley Reserve. Bought the LEGO Icons 'Land Rover Defender 110' which is considered to be my best one for 2023 with working suspension, steering and the ability to tow! I even built a trailer to go with it!
In May, I took a time-lapse video of a Wisdom 'Sizzler' ride being setup for the first time in my life! Built a LEGO model of the gas heater we used to have in the lounge room until 2007. Went on a few tram rides at the St Kilda Tramway Museum.
In June, went to the Model Railway Exhibition in Angle Park. Then went on a few buses during a 'Farewell Tour' of the MAN NL202 fleet.
In July, I put 'Richard Stevens Hire' decals on my blue LEGO trailer as a nod to the days before Kennards came to South Australia! The old streetlights on our street were upgraded to LED. Saw the 'Barbie' movie at Hoyts. Brixpo was way better than ever, so was AVCon!
In August, The St Kilda Tramway Museum had a showcase of old buses. Then I went to the Gawler Show.
In September, Went to the Royal Adelaide Show and saw a small ex-John Martins semi trailer which was owned by one of the amusement companies. The supposed Masters Home Improvement store in Noarlunga is now being converted to Bunnings after sitting unused for quite some time. My grandmother Ann Smith turned 90 and we celebrated her birthday at the main hall in her aged care village. Took a hike in Cobbler Creek Recreation Park and I was exceptionally lucky to avoid getting bitten by a snake which could've cut my life short. Then I finally advanced onto my full driver's license and had a beer at the Old Spot Hotel in commemoration of the 15th Anniversary of my first 'legal drink'.
In October, The former house of 'The Owens' (i.e. my mother's parents) was put up for sale. Had a discussion with an NDIS employee at the Disabilty, Ageing & Lifestyle Expo at the showgrounds. Then for the first time in almost 13 years, looked around in the Roseworthy Agricultural Museum and went on some rides at the Roseworthy Miniature Railway Club! Went to the Tonsley Hotel in Clovelly Park to have a meal before it closed its doors to be redeveloped for the T2D Infrastructure Project. The former Red Rooster building at Harbor Town in West Beach was finally demolished after TEN YEARS! Then I went to the National Motor Museum for the 'Bay To Birdwood' car showcase!
In November, Went to the first ever Tiny Homes Expo at the Adelaide Showgrounds. Ingle Farm Shopping Centre changed its name to Ingle Farm Plaza and the old 'wind pump' signboards had to be removed and replaced with generic rectangular ones. Went to the Skye Lookout for a lovely view of the city and its surroundings. Bought the new Jazwares 'Train & Play Deluxe Pikachu' from Toyworld! I just couldn't resist it.
In December, I went to the new entertainment complex in the former Harris Scarfe floors of Rundle Place. Received my 1/43 Scale Knight Rider FLAG Rig from a seller in Portugal but was in a few pieces so I had to gorilla-glue them back on. Also did a repair to a LEGO Fabuland plane set as the left-side exhaust pipe was in two pieces when I bought it from a shop in Cowell. Went on Adelaide's first ever BEB (Battery-Electric Bus) on Route 99C for the first time in my life! For Christmas, I got the new LEGO Chevrolet Corvette!

Movie Review: Silent Night
John Woo is one of my personal heroes! His filmmaking is legendary. It's more than action, it's ballet-like. But more than that - the violence is a metaphor for the emotional pain striking the relationships therein. His Hong Kong action films were discoveries for me in the 90s, i.e. A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, and Hard Boiled! Around the time I was discovering him is when he came to Hollywood and began making English-language films like Hard Target (Van Damme had final cut not Woo, but supposedly the director's cut bootleg is worth watching) and Broken Arrow (better than people give it credit for). But it was 1997's Face/Off that made audiences sit up and notice him as way more than just an action director. The last 20 minute of Face/Off is like a greatest hits of Woo moments! Then there were mixed results with Mission: Impossible 2 (joining an existing franchise) and Windtalkers (again, better than people give it credit for). His last American movie was 2003's Paycheck, which had its moments but felt like, well a paycheck movie for the cast and crew. Since then he's made some movies in Hong Kong, notably Red Cliff. But now he is back with his first American film in 20 years with Silent Night which opened this weekend.

I need to add that I even made a tribute / parody of Woo films with my short film To Be John Woo. It was about video store clerks obsessing about Hong Kong action films, and finding themselves in a Hong Kong action film situation with characters that make references to various Woo films. After we played film festivals from 2002 to 2004, I had the confidence to send a copy to Mr. Woo's production company and to my surprise the man himself sent me a holiday greeting card in December 2005. I always loved that my tribute to Mr. Woo made its way into his world and he made it a point of sending me a card that year! Bottom line: I hold John Woo in very high regard!

Kinnaman and Woo on set
In Silent Night, Brian (played by Joel Kinnaman of AMC's The Killing) is a man who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang's crossfire on Christmas Eve. While recovering from a wound that cost him his voice, he slowly comes home and makes vengeance his mission. He becomes so withdrawn that he pushes his wife (Catalina Sandino Moreno of Maria Full of Grace) away. But he becomes laser-focused on training and planning to avenge his son's death on the following Christmas Eve. With Brian losing his voice, the entire movie is dialogue-free as well.
First off, it's impossible to watch this and not be reminded of John Travolta's arc in Face/Off, where his son is killed by Nicholas Cage's character and becomes obsessed with killing him. But in that arc, Travolta is an FBI agent and has the resources to go after a terrorist, whereas here Kinnaman is just a regular guy who is driven to vengeance. We've seen that depicted in other movies like Straw Dogs or Death Wish, where an average person is driven to extreme violence beyond their nature based on being pushed to that emotionally. The action scenes are, of course, highly impressive. Even when a John Woo movie is subpar, there's the incredible action scenes to marvel at. The lack of dialogue in this movie is the result of Brian not having a voice, but still having so much that needs to be expressed and that is in some ways a gimmick. I kind of wish more directors would accept this challenge of making a movie without dialogue to focus on the visual elements more. A director like Kevin Smith for example, would probably struggle without dialogue to drive his films, but Woo has always been a visual stylist. The violence is going to be a bit much for some audiences and at times it is over the top. But let's give credit where credit is due, Woo has returned to American cinema accepting a challenge of making an action / revenge epic without chatter. I do hope his next movie will be better in terms of story, but when this movie works it really works!

"Sonically, this song is a meeting of some of our favourite musical decades… our homage to the glorious synth sounds of the 80’s and then a few nods from the late 90’s . Enjoy! We'll share on socials:)"
Don’t let this catchy little number fool you. This track is loaded with an ocean depth of emotion. Anyone and everyone will be able relate to the subject matter in this one ,and that is… lose! Lose in all its various forms. But maybe more specifically, lose of innocence, relationships and simpler times, and the unfortunate truth that we must except that all things will always change. But this is not a depressing song, more that it’s a beautifully honest song, and through adapting to change leads to evolution and growth through this crazy ride we call life. Sonically, this song is a meeting of some of our favourite musical decades… our homage to the glorious synth sounds of the 80’s and then a few nods to some of our favourite genres from the late 90’s and 2000’s, all wrapped up to make something fresh and new.
The Transits are: Ryan Lunn (vocals, guitars, synths - Durban, South Africa, Dom Antelme (vocals, bass - Auckland, New Zealand and Tyrone Smith (drums - Auckland, New Zealand) Not many of us get a shot, years later, at correcting the past, of rediscovering the dreams of our teenage youth, back in the company of the very same people that made it special way back when – your friends, colleagues, creatives, like-mindeds, the people that know you best. But this is what’s happened to the members of reborn New Zealand-via-South Africa punk-rock outfit, The Transits. 30 years after the formation of their teenage first band – after divergent musical journeys comprising live, chart and radio success - they’ve gone back to the future like Marty McFly and gotten the band back together, man.
But first, let’s rewind. If we didn’t know any better, their debut single When You Went Away might have come from a hotshot new So-Californian outfit souped up on testosterone and amphetamines. Hooky, powerful and compact, instead, it channels 30 years of experience, worldliness and musical intuition into its jittery, spacious grooves. The band’s sound can be described as rock infused with punk, indie and synth-pop. Complimented by dual singers. Plenty more where that came from, The Transits are doing it all again, proving that, just like in Back to the Future, lightning can indeed strike twice in 30 years.
