Top 10 Movies Coming Out This Summer
Tumblr media
Sunshine. Laughter. Thrill rides. Summer is synonymous with many things, and this year, it also means a return to the magic of movie theaters. The smell of buttery popcorn fills the air, the anticipation crackles through the audience, and the giant screen bursts to life with a kaleidoscope of colors. Get ready to dive into the most anticipated movies of 2024, a summer selection guaranteed to transport you to new worlds and leave you wanting more. 1. The Idea Of You A level-headed single mother starts a sizzling fling with a much younger, unarguably handsome lead singer of a boy band. If you missed Coachella 2024, then Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine will take you there on March 16th. I don't know about anyone else, but watching Anne Hathaway return to the rom-com genre after so long has me head over heels excited! 2. Turtles All the Way Down OCD, relationships, and the disappearance of a billionaire? Turtles All The Way Down, the adaptation of John Green’s bestseller of the same name, is a romantic drama that’s going to turn your summer around on May 2nd. The acclaimed writer has never disappointed us when it comes to unconventional stories. With his previous adaptations like Paper Towns and Looking For Alaska, our expectations from this movie are sky-high. 3. The Fall Guy Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt team up for a hilarious action flick! Gosling plays a washed-up stuntman who gets entangled in a dangerous mystery. Expect witty banter, high-octane stunts, and undeniable chemistry between the leads.Barbenheimer competitors Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are coming to the silver screens with a hilarious and action-packed feature. The Fall Guy revolves around an ex-stuntman, who’s face-to-face with a mystery more dangerous than any act he’s pulled before. The action genre seems most fitting for both the actors to be in after delivering epic comedic and serious performances. We hope it's not one of those big-budget commercial movies with an unimpressive plot and nothing more interesting than the cast. 4. Unfrosted A delicious summer staple has a history that sent pots and pans flying at respective contenders. Unfrosted, coming on May 3rd, shows two infamous cereal titans competing for the top spot on the breakfast shelves. Not to sound biased but will be refreshing to see Hugh Grant in a  comedic role which is what I look forward to the most in this movie. 5. Inside Out 2 The animated emotions are expanding and in Inside Out 2, Anxiety takes center stage. June 14th will be the day when anxiety will need to be dealt with. To save the day, we have Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust who will control the mess before everything comes crashing down. After the well-received first movie, the second is all we could've asked for. With animated movies, it's always a joy to get to watch the same old lovable characters once again brightening up the screens. 6. Despicable Me 4 While Gru is busy polishing his fathering skills on the pint-sized but equally tormenting addition to the family, the vengeful Maxime Le Mal is back. Gru and his minions must juggle fatherhood and crime fighting to bring peace again. I will never give up watching these movies. The fun, the wit, and the humor invite all kinds of cinephiles to get entertained by the adorable little yellow dudes we all love. Watch it on July 3rd! 7. Deadpool and Wolverine Loudmouth meets reclusive in the hilarious and action-brimmed feature, Deadpool and Wolverine. The unlikely duo needs to stick together if they want to come out on the other side. High Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are the duo we never knew we needed and they're back. I hope and pray this one turns some heads.  July 26th can’t come fast enough. 8. Kingdom of Planets of Apes Caesar has been ruling over the ape realm for years, but what happens when he comes across a secret that topples everything he has known? May 8th will be the day when this young ape needs to make some decisions. This movie has some serious hype around and with all the budget and expectations, it is only fair it gets to make our summers better. 9. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) shows how Furiosa went from a happy-go-lucky child to a lethal weapon. Driving the War Rig in the Citadel, all the while trying to go back to the Green Place, it is truly one of the most awaited movies of 2024. Anya-Taylor Joy looks unreal in the trailers and all that's there now is the wait until May24. 10. The Watchers What’s scarier? Being stranded in a forest with strangers or being stalked and hunted by mysterious nocturnal creatures? The Watchers, releasing on June 14th, starring Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, and others, will make you run in the opposite direction at the sheer mention of the word “forest”. Horror movies are already dominant in the cinema right now but in all honesty, this movie has been lingering in my mind for quite some time. From its concept to the cast, everything gives me a skin-crawling sensation. Whether it’s laying in the sun for a tan or sipping on a mojito in the warm evenings, these movies will make your summer that much better. Plan your summers with these dates marked! Knuckles Review: A Middling Entry in the Sonic Franchise
Tumblr media
The Paramount+ television miniseries Knuckles, a spin-off of the Sonic the Hedgehog film series, aims to bridge the gap between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with a unique narrative focus on the titular echidna. Starring Idris Elba as Knuckles and Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, the series shifts gears from the high-octane, globetrotting adventures of Sonic to explore more personal themes of mentorship, redemption, and family ties. While Knuckles showcases promising elements, it ultimately struggles to find its footing, culminating in a final product that's as inconsistent as it is occasionally delightful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kETt59yn6A The premise of Knuckles initially offers an intriguing expansion of the franchise's lore. Placed between the events of the second and forthcoming third Sonic films, it provides a character-driven narrative focusing on Knuckles' attempts to adjust to life on Earth. This storyline is given weight by Knuckles' undertaking to mentor deputy sheriff Wade Whipple, played with an affable charm by Adam Pally. The miniseries tries to layer its action-adventure skeleton with emotional flesh by incorporating themes of self-discovery, familial reconciliation, and the mastering of one's potential. Unfortunately, these lofty ambitions are often undercut by a disjointed narrative and tonal inconsistencies that plague the series throughout its run. The Good: One of the show's strengths is its character work, particularly with the leads. Idris Elba reprises his role as Knuckles, imbuing the character with the same gravitas and intensity that made his portrayal a standout in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. His mentorship of Wade introduces a dynamic that allows for moments of humor and heart. Adam Pally's Wade Whipple provides a commendable balance of comic relief and emotional sincerity, although the character sometimes veers too heavily into caricature. The interaction between Knuckles and Wade is, without doubt, the heartbeat of the series, driving home themes of growth and the importance of forging one's path. The Bad: However, the show often falters in its broader narrative and pacing. The storyline, while novel in its focus on lesser-seen aspects of the Sonic universe, meanders through subplots that feel tangentially connected at best. The central plot – training for a bowling tournament in Reno, Nevada, while being pursued by a vengeful former agent of Dr. Robotnik – oscillates between being engagingly absurd and bewilderingly so. The juxtaposition of such a mundane human activity with the high stakes of interdimensional conflict creates a tonal dissonance that the series never fully reconciles. Moreover, the show's integration into the broader Sonic universe feels uneven. While it serves as a bridge between the second and third films, Knuckles sometimes seems adrift from the main storyline, with references to established characters and events feeling shoehorned in rather than organically woven into the narrative. This disjointedness extends to the series' action sequences and visual effects, which, although competently executed, lack the kinetic energy and coherence of its cinematic counterparts. The series' thematic explorations, particularly concerning family and redemption, are commendable but inconsistently executed. The reuniting of Wade with his estranged family members and Knuckles' confrontation with his own legacy and responsibilities offer emotional high points. Yet, these moments often come across as underdeveloped, with resolutions that feel too convenient or inadequately set up. Overall: Knuckles does offer some innovations, most notably in its expansion of the series' mythos. The introduction of new locations, characters, and lore tied to the echidnas enriches the universe in compelling ways. However, these elements are sometimes at odds with the series' more grounded, character-driven aspirations, resulting in a narrative that feels caught between two worlds. Knuckles' ambition to deepen the lore of the Sonic universe while offering a focused character study of its titular echidna is laudable. Idris Elba and Adam Pally deliver performances that highlight their characters' complexities and charms. Nonetheless, the series struggles with pacing, narrative coherence, and tonal inconsistencies, failing to fully leverage its unique premise. While Knuckles provides moments of genuine entertainment and insight, it ultimately falls short of its potential, rendering it a middling entry in the expanding Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

Poitier is joined by the legendary Burt Lancaster (in his final film role) as John W. Davis, a complex attorney with a surprising twist. The stellar cast also includes Oscar® nominee Jeffrey Wright and Emmy winners Richard Kiley and Cleavon Little. From Small Towns to Supreme Court The miniseries takes viewers on a captivating journey, starting in a seemingly ordinary South Carolina town. More Than Just a Miniseries The 2024 DVD re-release of "Separate But Equal" offers an extra treat and the inclusion of the 1954 CBS News Special "See It Now: A Study of Two Cities" hosted by Edward R. Murrow. This special report provides valuable historical context, allowing viewers to see the national conversation surrounding segregation unfold in real time. "Separate But Equal" wasn't just a TV miniseries; it was a cultural touchstone. It reminded audiences of the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement and the importance of equal opportunity. The film's development itself is a testament to perseverance. Originally envisioned as a feature film, "Separate But Equal" eventually found its home as a miniseries, allowing for a more nuanced exploration of the complex legal and social issues at stake. So, whether you're a history buff or simply enjoy a captivating legal drama, "Separate But Equal" is a must-watch. It's a powerful reminder of the fight for equality and the enduring legacy of the Brown v. Board decision.

Humane Review: An Undercooked Horror Outing
Tumblr media
Humane, a film blending the harrowing depths of horror with the emotive stirrings of family drama, arrives with a weighty premise tucked beneath its belt. Directed by Caitlin Cronenberg in what marks her debut in the arena of feature filmmaking, and penned by Michael Sparaga, this cinematic venture ambitiously tackles the globe’s looming nightmare: the climate crisis. Through a narrative scaffold that unfolds over the course of a singular, tension-filled day, the film ambitively peers into a near-future, mere months post a catastrophic ecological collapse. A premise that is ripe with potential yet, regrettably, it's the film's execution, not its concept, that stumbles and ultimately undermines its promising setup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4b-OMLNWE0 Set against the backdrop of a world on the brink, Humane introduces us to Jared (played by Jay Baruchel), a recently retired newsman who, in the face of Earth’s desperate pleas, decides to enlist in the nation's newly instituted euthanasia program. This grave decision serves as the narrative fulcrum around which the film's thematic explorations pivot. Alongside Baruchel, the ensemble cast featuring Emily Hampshire as Rachel, Peter Gallagher as Charles, Enrico Colantoni as Bob, and Sebastian Chacon as Noah brings a blend of experience and fresh talent to the screen. Yet, despite these promising ingredients, the film’s flavor falls regrettably flat. One of Humane’s most palpable flaws lies in its narrative pacing. The storyline, although conceptually profound, meanders through its one-day timeline with an inconsistency that jars. Moments intended as climactic come across as underdeveloped or excessively rushed. They leave the audience adrift in a sea of unanswered questions and unexploited tension. For a film that aims to interweave the complexities of a family drama with the pulse-racing urgency of a horror thriller, Humane remarkably manages to dilute the impact of both genres. The film's attempt to address the climate crisis is commendable but heavy-handed, lacking emotional depth. The narrative becomes didactic instead of exploring characters' motivations and moral quagmires surrounding euthanasia. Despite the film’s thematic and narrative missteps, its technical execution—namely, Cronenberg’s direction and the cinematography—exhibits flashes of promise. The director skillfully uses close-ups and landscapes to emphasize isolation and despair. The visual choices show directorial sensitivity but would have been better with a tighter script and coherent narrative vision. Performance-wise, Jay Baruchel delivers a commendably restrained portrayal of Jared, a man teetering on the edge of despair and resolve. However, the script doesn't provide sufficient depth to fully leverage Baruchel’s capabilities, rendering Jared's emotional journey somewhat superficial. Emily Hampshire’s Rachel, while showing flashes of complexity, ultimately falls victim to the same fate. A character whose potential depth is skimmed rather than explored. The supporting cast brings gravitas to the screen. However, their characters similarly suffer from underdevelopment and a lack of substantive narrative arcs. Humane aims to echo the thematic resonance and socio-political commentary of classics in the horror-thriller genre. But, it lacks the narrative cohesion and emotional intelligence to fully realize its ambition. The film lightly touches on poignant themes but fails to explore ethical conundrums, resulting in an unsatisfying viewing experience. The movie’s score and sound design are, however, worthy of note. It manages to evoke a sense of impending doom and atmospheric tension that the narrative itself struggles to sustain. These elements are effective, but cannot save the film's broader issues. Humane is a film burdened by its ambitions. It's a project that, despite its promising premise and the urgent relevance of its thematic concerns, fails to deliver a coherent and compelling narrative experience. Caitlin Cronenberg shows potential for distinctive visual style and directorial flair. Humane, however, remains a testament to the challenges of translating high-concept thematic ambition into engaging, emotionally resonant cinema. Read the full article

Harry Potter to Return With New Audiobook Release
Tumblr media
Despite over a decade since the Harry Potter franchise wrapped up, The Wizarding World is far from gone. In the latest magical news, a new Harry Potter audiobook series is coming, and it’s set to be something huge. The production will see Audible and Pottermore Publishing team up to create exclusive audiobooks of all seven J.K. Rowling novels. Let’s talk about what we know so far. A New Harry Potter Audiobook Series Is Coming The goal of the new Harry Potter audiobook series is to bring the “iconic stories to life as never heard before.” It will do this by providing immersive audio entertainment with a score, new character voices and other real-world sound capture. They will tell the original Harry Potter stories and will not be involved with the new Wizarding World series from Warner Bros. The audiobooks will feature over 100 voice actors, which is quite an impressive feat. It would be incredible to see some original actors return to voice their iconic roles, but no casting news has been made yet. This isn’t the first Harry Potter tale to come to Audible. Their current collection is already worth a listen and includes the following: The Tales of Beedle the Bard, performed by Jude Law Harry Potter: A History of Magic, performed by Natalie Dormer Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, performed by Eddie Redmayne Quidditch Through the Ages, Performed by Andrew Lincoln Why We’ll Be Listening The series was initially released as audiobooks performed by Stephen Fry and Jim Dale, beginning in 1999. They were a staple in homes worldwide and have earned even more listens since launching on Audible in 2015. These audiobooks had quite the charm, and I still associate the books with Fry’s narration occasionally. However, an innovative release with dozens of voice actors is something that I won’t want to miss. The emphasis on the score also indicates that this will have tip-top production value, which isn’t a surprise given how much attention is still given to the franchise. I try to reread the Harry Potter books at least once every few years, and given the exciting news, I can say with certainty that my next read-through might be a listen-through instead. There is no official release date for the new Harry Potter audiobook series, but it is set to premiere sometime in late 2025. So, watch for more news from Audible and Pottermore Publishing.    Read the full article

28 Years Later: A Rage-Fueled Reboot Revs Up!
Tumblr media
Buckle up rage heads! The news coming out of Hollywood is wilder than a pack of infected on a sugar rush! Remember the OG rage virus flick, 28 Days Later? Well, get ready for a whole new outbreak, a trilogy no less, courtesy of the dream team of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. According to Deadline, this 28 Years Later reboot ain't messing around when it comes to casting. We're talking serious A-listers like Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, anyone?), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (kicking butt in Bullet Train), and the legendary Ralph Fiennes (dude, have you seen him in Schindler's List? Chills!). Now, details about the plot are still under wraps, tighter than a hazmat suit. But for those who need a refresher, the original 28 Days Later dropped in 2002. It followed a bicycle courier (played by Cillian Murphy and major props for him being an executive producer on this reboot!) who wakes up from a coma to a world overrun by rage-infected zombies. Talk about a bad hair day, right? This flick wasn't just about jump scares (though, let's be honest, it had its fair share). It explored themes of survival, hope, and the breakdown of society. Plus, that iconic soundtrack with "Blue Skies" by Coldplay? Pure genius. The original raked in over $82 million worldwide and spawned a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, in 2007. But Boyle and Garland just dipped their toes in that one, acting as executive producers. This time, they're back in the director and screenwriter chairs, respectively. And get this: Sony Pictures isn't stopping at just one movie. They're planning to shoot two films back-to-back, with the second one directed by Nia DaCosta, the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed Candyman reboot. Now that's some serious horror cred! So, what does this all mean? It means we can expect a 28 Years Later trilogy packed with action, suspense, and probably some social commentary thrown in for good measure. Plus, with this all-star cast, the performances are guaranteed to be killer (pun intended). Keep your eyes peeled for more updates, folks. This rage-fueled reboot is sure to be one heck of a ride! Get ready for a clash between idealistic journalism and the dark side of sensational news! Mark your calendars for May 3rd, because this drama is about to explode onto your screens. https://youtu.be/QsAnXd8wJdk Remember the tenacious reporter Radha Bhargava, played by the amazing Shriya Pilgaonkar? This season, she's on a mission to expose Dipankar's brand of "fake news" and destroy his TRP-fueled empire. This season, Ameena's taking a more hands-on approach. Expect her to be hitting the streets, uncovering the truth, and putting herself in danger to expose corruption. Why We’re Excited for New Bella Ramsey New Coming-Of-Age Film
Tumblr media
Bella Ramsey stole our hearts last year in HBO’s sensational The Last of Us, and we’ve been excited to see where the young actor would go next. The latest news is that they will star in an upcoming coming-of-age film. This new Bella Ramsey-led film, Sunny Dancer, will tell a story about teenage cancer with a unique approach. It also stars Louis Partridge and Ruby Stokes, and it’s one to look out for. What The New Bella Ramsey Film Is All About Sunny Dancer will follow Bella Ramsey’s character, Ivy, a teenager in remission from cancer. Her parents encourage her to head to a summer camp where she will spend the season surrounded by other young adults who have been through similar medical journeys. Ivy dubs it “chemo camp” but can’t help but find some joy in the experience along the way. It is set to be a more uplifting approach to the often-told “teenage cancer story,” and we can’t wait to see it.  The film is directed by George Jacques, a 23-year-old breakout director known for his 2023 film Black Dog. The film will be produced by Ken Petrie under the 27 Ten banner, along with George Jacques and Athenaeum Productions. Embankment Films will be dealing with the global pre-sales. Why We’re Excited For The Coming-Of-Age Film Of course, we’re excited to see Bella Ramsey, who has done nothing but impress us so far with their diverse roles, which have also included Game of Thrones. Additionally, it’s exciting to see such a young director take on an exciting project with so many cast members who are sure to bring their A-game. The teenage cancer story is also often worth a watch. While some movies have done it very well and others very wrong, it’s a genre that certainly keeps us on our toes. My last favourite of the genre is Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which came out in 2015, so we’re certainly overdue for a new movie that’s worth watching. Keep Your Eyes Out Sunny Dancer, the new Bella Ramsey film, is still in pre-production. So, we have a long wait before seeing anything on the big screen. Given our excitement, we’ll update you as soon as there’s more news. Will this movie be on your watchlist? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Read the full article

Shogun: A Limited Success or Gateway to More?
Tumblr media
History buffs and drama lovers, buckle up for a deep dive into FX's epic miniseries, Shogun! Based on James Clavell's timeless novel, Shogun took viewers on a wild ride through feudal Japan. But with the finale now behind us, there's a burning question: will there be a season two? Let's break down the show's impact and see what the creators, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, have to say about the future. According to Marks, the secret sauce of Shogun is the source material itself. Clavell's novel, even though it's over 50 years old, offers a timeless story about unforgettable characters and a fascinating historical setting. This core strength is what drew audiences in, hungry for something fresh and different on TV. A Long Road to the Screen Kondo reveals that the journey from book to screen took a whopping five years! That dedication and passion for the story definitely shine through in the final product. Interestingly, both Marks and Kondo credit this extended development period for allowing them to capture the essence of the book's themes about time, experience, and storytelling. Many fans were left devastated by the death of Mariko, a pivotal character in the story. Kondo herself admits to experiencing all the stages of grief after reading that part of the book! The creators, however, saw this moment as a powerful turning point and a testament to Mariko's strength. They also revealed the challenges of adapting such a significant scene for television. So, Will There Be a Season Two? The big question on everyone's mind: will there be more Shogun? Marks isn't giving anything away just yet. He emphasizes the importance of respecting the source material and feels the story told in the first season is complete. However, he leaves the door open, mentioning that a good story could potentially lead to a continuation. The world of Shogun isn't limited to just one book. James Clavell wrote a series of novels known as "The Asian Saga" that explores different parts of Asia. While Marks acknowledges the potential of these stories, he also recognizes the challenge of adapting them under the "Shogun" banner. The Legacy of Shogun Whether or not there's a season two, Shogun has already made its mark. It offered viewers a captivating escape into a bygone era, with complex characters and a rich historical backdrop. Only time will tell if there's more to this story, but one thing's for sure: Shogun's impact on the world of television is undeniable. Uncomfortable Truths: Deborah Ayorinde on Them: The Scare
Tumblr media
They weren't afraid to ruffle some feathers in season one, and it seems season two of "Them: The Scare" won't be shying away from difficult themes either. I recently had the chance to chat with Deborah Ayorinde and Luke James, stars of the Prime Video horror anthology series, to discuss the audience's reaction to the show's unflinching portrayal of race and social issues. Them: The Scare AAFCA Interview https://youtu.be/WsSd6DRy2xQ The first season of "Them: Covenant" garnered strong reactions for its graphic content and exploration of racial trauma. Deborah, who returns for season two, shared that her peers respected the show's artistry while acknowledging its difficulty. "They felt like it was very necessary, though it was definitely hard to watch for some people," she said. Both Deborah and Luke believe season two will offer a deeper understanding of the show's core themes. "I think season two will kind of bring a lot of things full circle," Deborah explained. "I think it will make people who maybe didn't understand why we had to go there for season one, I think it will make them kind of understand it in season two." Luke, who joins the cast for season two, sees the show's historical grounding and social commentary as a strength. "I learned so much from season one," he said. "A lot of us aren't privileged to our own history. And I think it's really cool when a creator can give us a dose of that, along with entertainment in a sense." While both actors acknowledge the show's potential to shock and disturb, they believe the horror elements serve a purpose. "I think season two, I think, yeah, it's going to hit you over the head," Luke said. "It's horror, right? Get spooked and all of those things. But I think you have a lot, a lot more fun with it and understanding what LM is doing, the messaging." "Them: The Scare" premieres on April 25th on Prime Video. Are you ready to be scared? Will season two offer the deeper understanding the cast promises? Share your thoughts in the comments below!   Read the full article

Rebel Moon: Zack Snyder Sets the Record Straight on Success
Tumblr media
Remember the space opera "Rebel Moon" that dropped on Netflix last year? The one with the epic battles and Snyder's signature visual style? Well, it turns out there's been some drama surrounding its viewership, and director Zack Snyder is here to clear the air. Back in March, Snyder got tongues wagging when he claimed that more people streamed "Rebel Moon" than saw the live-action "Barbie" movie in theaters. Ouch! This sparked a heated debate about streaming vs. theatrical releases, with some folks feeling Snyder was dissing the big screen experience. Here's the breakdown: Snyder says Netflix told him that his movie racked up around 80-90 million views, which translates to roughly 160 million people watching (assuming two viewers per screen). Doing some Hollywood math (think multiplying viewers by ticket prices), Snyder claims this translates to a potential box office of $1.6 billion – way more than "Barbie" ever made. Hold Up, Did Snyder Just Diss Movie Theaters? Snyder recently spoke with Gizmodo to promote the upcoming sequel, "Rebel Moon: Part Two: The Scargiver," and clarified his earlier comments. He says he was simply basing his claims on the numbers Netflix provided, not trying to downplay the importance of movie theaters. Here's the twist: Snyder admits that even though more people might have streamed "Rebel Moon," "Barbie" definitely had a bigger cultural impact. He acknowledges the buzz and excitement surrounding the live-action "Barbie" film, which just goes to show that the big screen still holds a special place in pop culture. It seems Snyder just wanted to highlight the massive viewership numbers for "Rebel Moon" on Netflix. While streaming might reach a wider audience, theatrical releases can create a whole different kind of buzz. Think about it: how many times did you hear people talking about "Barbie" after it came out? Exactly. A Boy Wonder's World Speaking of buzz, here's a fun fact for all you movie trivia buffs: "Rebel Moon" actually started life as a concept for a different movie called "Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas." This project eventually morphed into its own sci-fi universe, separate from Snyder's zombie flicks. So, there you have it! The "Rebel Moon" viewership debate is settled (kind of). While streaming might bring movies to a wider audience, theaters can still create a unique cultural phenomenon. Now that "Rebel Moon" has its sequel on the way, one thing's for sure: the future of this space opera is looking bright! Boy Kills World: A Mind-Bending, Ultra-Violent Trip (Review)
Tumblr media
Looking for a movie that will blow your mind with its action sequences, then confuse you with its story, and leave you with a "wait, what?" feeling by the end? Look no further than this Boy Kills World review. This action-packed flick starring Bill Skarsgård is equal parts Deadpool, Kill Bill, and fever dream. The movie throws you right into the deep end. We're introduced to "The Culling," an annual purge where people are randomly chosen to be…well, culled. It's a messed-up system, but hey, that's the world we're dealing with. Enter Boy (Skarsgård), a mute and deaf young man raised by a mysterious Shaman (Yayan Ruhian) who looks suspiciously familiar (think "The Raid"). Shaman's training methods are…unconventional, to say the least.  The movie doesn't waste time explaining why Shaman is training Boy, it just throws you into this bizarre student-teacher dynamic with heavy Star Wars vibes. We see Boy dodging everything from shuriken to cheese graters (seriously, that kitchen fight scene will scar you for life). A Cast of Colorful Characters (and Some WTF Moments) Sharlto Copley steals the show (seriously, is that even him?) as a villain who channels both Christian Bale and Michael Scott from "The Office." Then there's the mysterious Kill Bill-esque biker chick with a soft spot for kids (Famke Janssen) and Boy's ever-present hallucination of his dead sister. Yeah, this movie doesn't shy away from the weird. The fight choreography is fantastic, with a healthy dose of gore that would make Sam Raimi proud. There's a constant sense of danger, and Boy's journey to get revenge is brutal and bloody. However, the movie isn't perfect. The pacing drags a bit in the second act, and the constant inner monologue from Boy's inner voice (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) gets tiresome. There are also some plot holes you could drive a truck through, like the strange decision to make one character completely unintelligible. A Twist You Won't See Coming (and a Shocking Origin Story) Just when you think you've got the movie figured out, it throws a massive twist your way. Let's just say there's a whole lot of family drama going on, and Shaman might not be the good guy you thought he was. This revelation, coupled with a mind-blowing hallway fight scene (seriously, this movie is a contender for the best hallway scene of 2024!), makes the ending totally worth it. "Boy Kills World" is a wild ride from start to finish. It's a movie you watch for the insane action sequences, the WTF moments, and the sheer audacity of it all. Just don't go in expecting a deep and meaningful story. This is pure, unadulterated entertainment, perfect for fans of comic book movies and anyone who wants to see Bill Skarsgård go full-on action hero (with a dash of mute rage). The Origins of Boy Kills World "Boy Kills World" is the directorial debut of Moritz Mohr. The film was first announced in 2019, with Skarsgård signing on shortly after. The script, based on an unpublished graphic novel, was praised for its dark humor and over-the-top violence. Filming took place in South Africa in 2022, and the movie was finally released in April 2024. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV_MWPL-jq8 Read the full article
