We all want to be entertained, distracted from our lives. There's nothing wrong with a Netflix or YouTube binge, but perhaps its not so great that its become the default for us, or at least for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some TV, but watching the crew of the Discovery getting themselves into trouble, or the Click (wholesome though he is) making jokes about goofy memes doesn’t actually accomplish anything, and it takes time that could be used in more fulfilling ways.

Social media can be a great resource, and a serious distraction. I decided to back away from social media almost entirely once I realized I was letting people I didn't know piss me off, especially when I wasn't going to change their mind (hello Dunning-Krueger, didn't see you over there).

To challenge myself and get my head on straight, I'm embracing Cal Newport's Digital Detox for March, eliminating social media and all streaming video. I'm letting myself have access to a limited number of sites, primarily 84000, Suttacentral, and the Storygraph. I'm also planning to post to Mastadon twice a day (a poem and 3 good things), and Tumblr. I'm not restricting podcasts, audio books or music. I'll be using Basecamp, Meetup, and Zoom for personal development and to keep commitments I've made. I'm planning to revert my phone to something akin to what Steve Jobs originally intended, a sort of smart dumb phone that can make calls, texts, access messaging apps, maps, the app for my smart scale, One Bus Away, Streaks, audio, YNAB & my bank, and thats about it. In other words I'm making my phone a tool again. The question of course, becomes what to do without access to technological pacifiers. The answer really is most anything that doesn’t require a computer or smartphone, but some of my favorites these days include:

Meditation: I've been practicing based on the teachings of the Nalandabodhi, and Shambhala lineages recently and plan to meditate for seven minutes in the morning and/or evening, in addition to short sessions sporadically throughout the day. I'll also be single tasking for the most part, using activities like reading, walking, reading/composing poetry, and painting, as meditative practices.

Yoga: I got into yoga asana because I was stiff and not very grounded, and I decided to train to teach for similar reasons, since yoga is so pigeon holed as something only bendy acrobats can do. I've not gotten on the mat in a few years at this point, but want to get back to it, inspired by my teacher starting to teach again earlier this week after an extended health crisis. I'm planning to just do a couple minutes to start, probably just Sun Salutations/playing around.

Walk: A great form of exercise most anyone can do, and it doesn’t have to cost a thing as long as you have a decent pair of shoes and appropriate clothes for the weather. I've been taking daily walks more regularly recently, but most of the time this is a bookstore circuit that leads to lots of temptation. Going forward I'm planning to walk more in nature and go to libraries instead. I'm setting a 12k goal in Streaks, and shooting for 20k. I've already been hitting in this range most days which has helped with some serious weight loss.

Read: I’ve always got a couple books going. At the moment the list includes a commentary on the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva, and Donut Economics by Kate Raworth. Books are magical things. You can learn most anything you might be interested in (I highly recommend Raworth's book), you can learn about another person’s experience of life in their own words (Montaigne basically invented the personal blog before the internet or computers were a thing when he thought up the essay format). You can also exercise your imagination and relax with a good novel (the human imagination has one solid advantage over TV & movies in that it isn’t restricted by a budget!) The plan is to dial back and do my best to only read one or two books at a time instead of the four or five I've usually got going. I'm also planning to read more poetry after my interest was reignited by Sister Jina's wonderful collection, which leads to the next item.

Write: Mostly when I say write I'm thinking of journaling and composing poetry by hand. I'm shooting for spending some time every day writing, but not worrying about getting a polished poem at the end. Just fifteen minutes of concentrated work.

Paint: I've taken a couple classes on watercolor and messed around a bit with acrylics. I'd like to spend some time each day painting, actually focused on having something to show for it each time, though that could be childish goofing around. I'd like to take a shot at using acrylics to recreate ukiyoe, get inspired by Zen/Chan watercolors, and take a shot at Sumie, though I definitely want to take a class in the latter at some point sooner than later!

PLAYING WITH MY CAT: Do I need to explain?

NOTHING: Seriously, we've become so obsessed with "productivity" and "getting things done" that as a culture its as if we've forgotten what it is to be alive as a human being. I'm going to try to do this more often, whether standing in line, walking somewhere, or just having nothing in particular to do.

I'm not expecting March to be easy, but thats kind of the point. I'm getting rid of some things I enjoy , but the fact that something isn't easy just means its more worth doing. I'll be journaling about it, and plan to post here once a week.

Year End Writing Round-up

I tumbled into Witcher fandom in 2020, as is obvious by my writing output. But it’s also important to note that this has been my most productive year EVER in the fic-writing department: 260,000 words, more than in the last five years combined. And yes, part of that’s the pandemic, and part of it is media inspiration (thanks, Witcher!), but I’d say the majority of it is the fandom.

Witcher readers have been very generous with comments and excitement and enthusiasm, and the Discord communities have been great. People engaging with my work is hugely motivating. So thanks to everyone who’s commented, kudos’d, squeed with me in Discord, sent me an excited Tumblr ask, rec’d my work, left an all-caps tag on your AO3 bookmark or rec, or reblogged stuff on Tumblr. It’s because of you that I’ve turned out so much work this year!

Summary: Something called to Adrien, and before he knew it, he was addicted to sitting outside Marinette's window as Chat Noir; just watching her. His voyeuristic habit needs to stop, but things have gotten far too complicated now that he realizes he's growing a crush on her.

A year ago today, I posted "Peeping Tomcat.”

The previous August (2017), a month after I introduced myself to “Miraculous Ladybug,” I had written my first ever fanfic for the fandom. The one-shot was the original “Peeping Tomcat” (it has since been renamed “Peeping Tomcat - Teaser”). I enjoyed the story so much, I decided to expand this one-shot into a full-blown novel.

I worked on “Peeping Tomcat” during that year’s superhero-themed NaNoWriMo. I made it to 50,000 words, but I wasn’t done with my story. I spent the next few months editing my first draft, and there are large parts in the final product that barely resemble the original version. Even after I posted the first chapter on March 30, 2018, I kept working on edits and reworks for the rest of the novel.

I posted a new chapter every Friday for 3+ months. I officially finished the project when I published the final chapter on July 31, 2018. Nearly a full year after I wrote the one-shot.

This novel has been such a large point of pride for me, and I want to thank all of my fans for reading, faving, leaving kudos, bookmarking, commenting, and even reblogging my promotions for each chapter. A year later, and I’m still getting notifications about a new reader, new comment, or new fave/kudos. You guys all super duper rock!

So, how about a trip down memory lane, or how about a taste for those who may have missed this story’s original run?

She didn't realize I watched her every night, and, frankly, I probably shouldn't have.

A thought pulled at the back of my head as I reflected on the akuma supervillains that had originated at that school. There were fifteen kids in my class, including myself. Fifteen. There were thirteen akuma victims that were my classmates. Excluding myself, that meant only one of my classmates hadn't been akumatized. One kid didn't have a school year punctuated with the guilt of becoming a Paris-attacking supervillain: Marinette Dupain-Cheng.

Realizing that Marinette was the lone student, besides me, who hadn't been transformed yet, I had a protective need to check on her home, as if gazing upon the abode was enough to ward Hawk Moth from her. I shifted along the roof of the Collège Françoise Dupont so that I was again facing the Place des Vosges. Nestled between these two key points in my life as Chat Noir was the humble bakery Marinette's parents owned, complete with the apartment the Dupain-Cheng family lived in.

It was a simple home considering the entire first floor made up the bakery, which was still smaller than my bedroom. In fact, my two-story room may have been larger than the entirety of the three-level apartment. Neither Marinette nor her parents ever seemed lacking, though. In fact, part of me envied the small apartment. No one could get lost in there. No one could feel alone. Family was always a good holler away, not that Marinette ever needed to holler to get her parents' attention.

There was a warmth to that building that transcended the ovens Mr. Dupain started up at four every morning. Even at night, long after the bakery had shut down, and despite being across the street, I still felt that warmth. For the first time that day, I felt at peace. Just looking upon the Dupain-Cheng household calmed me the way being Chat Noir normally did, the way running through Paris normally did, the way the Ladybug and Chat Noir statue normally did, the way none of those did that night.

Family. I think that's what pinned me to that spot; what soothed my heart. That transcending warmth I could feel meters away was the idea of family. The idea that Marinette was always surrounded by hers, and how it was obvious that her family was immensely proud of her. Marinette's parents were constantly smiling and visibly beaming whenever they were around their daughter, or at least talking about her. Their pride in the woman Marinette was becoming was palpable. The same was true about Marinette's great-uncle Cheng Shifu. The entire clan radiated with love. Anyone could feel it, even from across the street.

I needed that sensation that night. After all of my failings, and with Father's stern talk of his disappointments in me, I needed a reminder that unconditional love existed. I needed to know that people could love others even with their shortcomings; a way to reassure myself that my father still did love me, and that Ladybug would still need me as her partner.

Like the scent of freshly baked croissants, the pacifying feeling of honest, familial love wafted towards me, and I breathed it in deep. I was no longer on edge as I pictured all the things that made the Dupain-Cheng home so welcoming and loving.

I remembered being Chat Noir in Marinette's home as I assisted Ladybug in hiding Kim from an akuma villain who was hunting him down. While Ladybug discussed her strategy with Marinette's parents and Kim, I had spotted a family photo displayed on a bookshelf in the living room. Marinette had her goofy little grin, and her parents sweetly smiled behind her. While I don't think I have a single picture like that with Father, the photo reminded me of the ones I had with my mom; both of us grinning ear-to-ear. Love shone through the pictures of me and Mom, just as it did with that photo in Marinette's living room.

My mind then wandered to when I helped Marinette by translating for her Chinese great-uncle. She was so nervous about dishonoring the master chef, but the man took to his great-niece instantly. I got to spend the day watching the two of them interact, and it was sweet the care each took to learn about the other. In the end, Cheng Shifu was so proud of his great-niece that he renamed his famous Celestial Soup after her. True, my father uses me as a poster child for his clothing line, but there was something different; something special in Cheng Shifu honoring Marinette the way he did. She was able to be her clumsy, awkward, unsure self and still manage to impress him. I have to be poised, reserved, and refined at all times to avoid disappointing my father. Which is probably why I needed Chat Noir so much.

The thing that brought me the most comfort, though, was remembering when I was at Marinette's house to practice for the Ultimate Mecha Strike III gaming tournament. Marinette may have been embarrassed by her parents, but I thought it was super sweet that they kept popping in to check up on us. The fact that they did so using the pretense of bringing us snacks was a nice added touch. They always had smiles that matched the warmth of the croissants, cookies, or quiche they brought for us. I get that Marinette was like most teenagers who just wanted some space to breathe, but I've had all the space I could want, and then some, since Mom went missing. To have someone check in that frequently, to have parents that so desperately want to be in their child's life; I don't think Marinette realized how fantastic that is, or how jealous I was.

I allowed myself to truly relax. I lounged across the roof of my school, my legs dangling over the edge, as I leaned back on my elbows and imagined what was going on in that warm apartment. What was it like to live there? What was it like to be part of that family? I pictured myself in Marinette's place: Tom Dupain was my father instead of hers, and Sabine Cheng was my mother. I envisioned it was me flailing around during a water balloon fight with my father, or that I was the one being instructed by my mother on how to roll out the dough properly to make the crust for a quiche. I could practically smell the smoky sweetness of a well-seasoned roast and fingerling potatoes being pulled from the tiny apartment kitchen oven and placed on the breakfast counter. I almost tasted the flaky butter of still-warm biscuits topped with a touch of plum jam. The chilled breeze of the night vanished from my notice as I felt snuggled into what would have been my lofted bed; should I have been the one who lived above the neighborhood bakery. I breathed in the sweet lingering smells of the day's baked goods as I pictured them being the cologne from the Dupain-Chengs as they tucked me in and kissed my forehead goodnight. I yearned for Marinette's reality to be mine, and imagined that it was.

I got so lost in that fantasy I nearly fell off the roof when I heard the scream.

Writing has good times and bad times.

Just for fun, let’s check out my AO3 stats from 2017-2021. This is not to brag or drag anyone or anything, this is five years of statistics to make a point.

So let’s talk about those five years.

Wow! 84000 words! I had no idea I’d written that much total. That’s cool! Is it a lot compared to other people? I have no fucking clue and I’m not gonna sweat it because that way lies madness. Anyway. Averaging over 5 years, that would be about 16,800 words a year, right?

That is so not what happened.

So based on say 17k words average, this was a very good year for me! I started a new job in Japan! I was trapped in a teacher’s lounge for anywhere from 2-5 hours a day, depending on class load. I had to entertain myself somehow. Fresh into Dragon Age Inquisition and Mass Effect Andromeda came out, I had lots of inspo to play with and some new pals encouraging me. Good year!

Honestly, if you asked what I thought before I looked at this, I would have switched 2018 and 2019 in my head. I was still in Japan, still spending a ridic amount of time in the teacher’s lounge. Based on my google docs, I wrote a lot more than I published. And that’s fine! You don’t have to publish everything! Artists don’t publish every doodle that hits the paper. I don’t remember this being a good or bad year by any means, but writing apparently was not the focus.

See, I was surprised by how high this one was. It almost hit the average. I came back from Japan, and there was a lot going on with job hunting and my dad being sick with cancer/major surgery (he’s okay now), mentally I would’ve pegged this a bad writing year. But I got back into Dragon Age 2 and made some new friends that were into it. I never wrote fanfic for it before because I didn’t have friends who encouraged me to develop my OCs back in like IDK 2013? Who the fuck knows. Make friends! They help! And you may have a better year than you were expecting!

2020 sucked for everyone but God Did I Not Want To Write At All. I published some really old shit and wrote one little thing for a gift exchange and that was it. Did I not like that I wasn’t writing? Yeah, mostly from a frustration point because my friends were writing tons. But I did my best not to let myself get too down about it. Because it’s cyclical. It needed to lie fallow for a bit.

Because guess fucking what?

Here we are in 2021, apparently the greatest writing year of my life. Job hasn’t been too terrible, it’s not brain intensive most days, and I had a lot of downtime to write. Got some fresh inspo getting into interactive fiction, starting with TWC, ending with FHR (which apparently has latched onto my goddamn brain like a leech, we may be here a while.), made a fuckton of new friends who encouraged me to develop my dumb possum child, and well, as far as professional development this has been a bit of a dud year but as far as writing? Fab, couldn’t be better lol.

But anyway, the point of all this is: sometimes the words are gonna happen great, and sometimes it’s going to fucking suck and everything is terrible. Sometimes life gets in the way. Sometimes it doesn’t. The pipes clog and the unclog. I can’t tell you what’ll get your pipes unclogged and new shit happening. Sometimes it’ll be a new fandom. Sometimes it’ll be an old fandom you’re revisiting. Sometimes you’ll make the right friends and the inspo will generate itself just through chatting. Sometimes you just gotta keep trucking and hope the pipe unclogs itself.

It will eventually unclog, I promise. You just gotta get through it.

Your worth is not determined by how many words you write or the quantity of feedback you get. Keep on keeping on, and keep being awesome in the meantime.

Maybe 2022 will be your year.

I stink at reading WIP work (I always forget the nuances of the story between chapters) so I usually wait until a fic is complete before reading BUT Lassos and Lilies is so tempting! Every time I get a chapter update notification I get so close to giving in and reading. Is there an estimate to how many chapters you have planned for L&L? If it's a lot, I might go ahead and read all the chapters now, wait for the rest to publish, and then reread everything. Your writing > my will power.

I am a self-professed one-shot slut, so what I’m going to list here are some of my favorite long fics. inside my wounded soul (like mortal love) by @kimaracretak - this piece was actually written for me in my first Reylo fanfic exchange! It’s 22861 words and has some really touching moments - it’s Rey and Ben exploring childhood memories using the force bond.

25: fic that deserves more love

meet me in the woods - a WIP Barkskins fic by @jeynepoole. Barkskins aired on NatGeo earlier this year, and it’s my favorite show of 2020, but it seems to really be flying under the radar. Meg is writing a fully-fleshed out AU centering around a handful of the main characters - it really leans into the whole “what (or who) is the loup-garou” question alluded to in the canon. So if you’re into shapeshifters, werewolves, period drama, and the fine line between what makes humans different from animals, I HIGHLY recommend this piece (and also the show! my neighbor and i ran a scientific experiment last night to find out the stringency of our fic qualifications and what we found is that we are very similar: we each chose a popular pairing that we read (because i usually read in a very niche non-ship-based world with only 500 available fics total, and my ~main~ pairing only has 3000 total, i did have to skew more popular than i normally would - her main pair started at 84000 fics, i started with 49000) and set up our normal filters. the final search result was 2-2.5% of all the available fics on ao3. i am calling this the Filter Quotient (i don’t know what a quotient is)

i then ran my own numbers and out of the 20 fics on the first page i was interested in 7 of them (which feels high!!) yielding an Interested Quotient of 35% (so far, .8% of all pics). (hers may have been higher but she does sort by kudos, which would be an interesting adjustment, and she also allows for fics of any word length or completeness whereas i Do Not)

nothing cracked 10k words (most are under 2000 - it’s hard to jump ship on something that’s like a grand total of 500 words) but i think despite that the Investment Quotient is about the same: i finished 2 of the 7 (1 bc i was just too far to stop) aka 28%, so my final result is .2%.

just in case anyone wants to also run this completely pointless experiment themselves
