This set probably won me over to watch Franklin – because the show actually managed to put La Fayette in the right uniform at the right time!
Tumblr media
Here he is wearing the uniform of a Captain from the Noailles regiment. He joined the regiment in 1775 and his commission was a “wedding-gift” from his father-in-law who owned said regiment (although La Fayette had to wait until he turned eighteen to actually be commissioned a Captain). La Fayette wore this uniform in a painting by Louis-Léopold Boilly – although the painting was only done in 1788.

Take care of yourself, my dear friend. For tho’ I think your nation would in any event work out her salvation, I am persuaded were she to lose you, it would cost her oceans of blood, and years of confusion and anarchy.

You wanted the deets and so you shall have them. :.-)
The process of informing La Fayette was likely a combination of both factors. First, Thomas Jefferson wrote La Fayette on April 2, 1790, that:
I am sorry to tell you his health is less firm than it used to be. However there is nothing in it to give alarm.

It is entirely possible that there were more letters exchanged since Washingtons illness made headlines and everyone knew how close La Fayette was to Washington – alas, Jefferson’s letter is the only one I found on a whim.
Washington himself first mentioned an illness in his diary on May 9 but judging by the correspondence of his physicians and acquaintances we became sick (probably with influenza, there was an epidemic at the time) sometime between late March and early April. By the end of the month of April he was slowly recovering and gaining strength. He wrote to La Fayette on June 3, 1790:
I have, a few days since, had a severe attack of the peripneumony kind: but am now recovered, except in point of strength. My Physicians advise me to more exercise and less application to business. I cannot, however, avoid persuading myself that it is essential to accomplish whatever I have undertaken (though reluctantly) to the best of my abilities. But it is thought Congress will have a recess this summer, in which case, I propose going for a while to Mount Vernon.

Hello! I would like to ask if you are interested in Franklin watching Apple TV? Due to the current three episodes, Lafayette has a lot of scenes. Even Segur and Noailles appeared.
And personally, I think this is a fairly realistic version of Lafayette in film and television works. If you have seen it, I would really like to hear your point of view
Yes, dear Anon, I asked myself the same question the other day. Normally, everything that has La Fayette in it interests me. While the trailer for Franklin did not exactly win me over, I really liked the fact that they included La Fayette and his friends like Ségur and Noailles. Based on the few production stills I have seen so far, I thing the casting choices were pretty good.
I do not have, however, Apple TV (or any other streaming service for that matter) and normally on whatever my local tv stations have to offer. I might get a subscription for a month or so, once the series is completely aired and I can watch it all in one go but I am honestly not sure yet.
Anyway, if I am going to watch it, I will definitely make a post and bother everyone with my opinions. :-)

This morning we woke up to a sad sight as smoke billowed over the rooftops of Copenhagen, testifying to the devastating fire at Børsen. An important part of our architectural heritage was and still is in flames. For 400 years, Christian IV's building Børsen has been a prominent landmark in Copenhagen. For generations, the characteristic dragon spire has helped define Copenhagen as the "city of towers". Until today, we have regarded the historic building as a beautiful symbol of our capital and a building that we as a nation have been proud of. The Queen and I would like to thank all those who, since early this morning, have ensured that no one has been injured and who have fought to save as much as possible of both the building and the many cultural treasures and works of art that Børsen contains.
