As you would expect February 29th is a bit bereft of anniversaries, but did you know..........
Anyone born on this day is said to be unlucky in Scottish culture, and referred to as “Leaplings.” True, they don’t get to celebrate many birthdays, but to make things worse, Scottish tradition adds on another layer by saying that leaplings are doomed to a lifetime of “untold suffering.” They also consider leap years as doomed for farmers, as the saying goes: “Leap year was never a good sheep year.”
Ithink we all know that it is the day of the year a lady can traditionally propose toher man, but in Scotland women intending to propose are advised to wear a red petticoat visible to their love – perhaps to give them fair warning! ;) Tradition also stated that any man who refused a Leap Day proposal should be issued with a fine, which could range from money to silk gowns.
If you are trying to work out the math on what you're exact age would be if you were born on February 29th, then you are in luck.

HI UMMM listening to timeless (taylors version) (from the vault) and it is SO jamie coded omg. could you maybe write something with him and this song?? sorry im obsessed with sntv and when i was listening to the album again this morning timeless is so jamie omg
OKAY DON'T MIND IF I GET CARRIED AWAY.
1.5k words
"Okay, I'll see you home for dinner, yeah?" You said into the phone as you walked down the street. "I'm like 10 minutes out."
"Sure thing," Jamie answered. You could hear the clattering and sounds of metal on wood, assuming Jamie was cooking something up for dinner. "You're gonna love this just wait."
As you rounded the corner to your street, you saw a sign outside of an antique shop.
'Photos 25 cents!'
"I'm sure I will, Jaim," you replied, vacantly to him. Something about the pictures was calling to me. You couldn't quite put your finger on it, but you wanted to go see them. "See you soon?"
"Sure thing, babe, Love you!'
"Love you, too!" You hung up the phone and entered the shot. It was an antique shop you'd passed a thousand times before but never gone in. You glanced at your watch, you had time.
The bell chimed as you walked in and you waved to the shop owner. You walked over to the box you saw in the window and saw it was full of old photos. Black and white color, photos of a 30s bride and her husband, a couple on the porch of their house. You picked one up of a man in uniform hugging his bride. The photos felt so familiar as you looked at them and in an instant they came to life in your head.
1944
"You come back to me Jamie Tartt, you here me?" You demand, tearfully as you hugged him.
"There is nothing that could stop me from coming home to you," He assured you, holding the back of your head to him. "I think God himself would be afraid of your wrath."
You giggled, closing your eyes tightly. "Well, he should be." You pulled back, keeping your arms around his neck as you looked between his eyes. The war was raging through Europe and Jamie was doing the right thing by joining them, but your heart hurt to say goodbye to him, especially not knowing if he would make it back. "You better write to me."
"Everyday," he promised, squeezing your sides. "I'll think of you everyday, always."
A honk from the street alerted the two of you that it was time for Jamie to go. Your eyes welled up with tears and your lip began to tremble.
"Hey, hey," Jamie cooed, bringing a thumb to wipe your tears away. "We're gonna be okay, yeah?"
You didn't trust yourself to talk so you just nodded. He smiled at you, then leaned in to kiss you. It was a sweet kiss, a goodbye kiss, and you tried to muster as much love into it at you could. Then you pushed him away from you, knowing that if you didn't you would never let go.
"Go win the war, baby," you instructed, biting your lip.
He gave you a salute and was off.
You blinked and were back in the present. The memory felt so real that you realized there was a tear on your own cheek. You wiped it away and put the photo back in the box.
The next one that caught your eye was a couple in a driveway, holding hands. You looked on the back where the date said 1958. They looked like they were dressed up going to prom or homecoming or whatever other high school event.
You made you chuckle to yourself thinking about the first time you met Jamie. Keely had set the two of you up on a blind date for some Richmond Charity event. When he picked you up, you were shocked to see if was the famous Jamie Tartt, but you quickly realized why she'd chosen him.
He was kind and funny, and a little cheeky too which you liked. He matched your wit and challenged your social scene by encouraging you out of your comfort zone. It only took that one night for you to realize that Jamie was the person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with.
Next to the box was an old book, covered in cobwebs. You picked it up and blew the dust off of it. As you flipped through the pages, you gathered that it was an old romance about a couple torn apart by their familys. The girl was forced to marry another man but she ran away to be with her one true love.
1568
You raced down the steps of the castle, bag in hand. You had to move swiftly to escape your parents. In the morning, you were to be wed to the prince of some foreign country where you would be forced to move to. But you didn't love that prince. You loved Jamie. A knight of your kingdom. You were sworn to him as he was sworn to you.
Jamie was waiting for you outside. Waiting to take you off into the night where you would never be heard from again. You couldn't get your feet to move fast enough knowing he was waiting for you just outside.
Finally you made it outside. But Jamie wasn't there. Fear rushed through you. What if he had been caught? What if he didn't truly love you? What if he-
You didn't get to finish your thoughts when he finally appeared from the tree line. You rushed to him and he caught you in his arms tightly.
"Oh, Jamie," you cried, throwing your arms around his neck. "I thought you had forgotten me."
He held you tightly, chuckling into your shoulder. "Forget you? I could never." He let go and grabbed your hand. "We must go now, before we are caught."
You held the book open to the illustration of the couple running off hand in hand. This place was timeless. Moments in time from throughout the ages of love. Love that you knew now with Jamie. You grabbed the book and the box of photos and took it to the counter.
Jamie was worried. He'd finished up dinner around 5 minutes ago and you still weren't home. It wasn't like you to be late, especially when he'd just talked to you 15 minutes ago. He checked his phone, no text from you. He was just about to call you when he heard your key in the door.
"(Y/N)? What took you so long?" he called going to greet you at the door. He was surprised to see you holding a big box in your hands as you struggled through the door. "What on earth is that?"
He came over to take the box from you so you could open the door.
"Jamie!" you exclaimed, excitedly. "Look what I found!"
He looked in the box. It was a bunch of photos of other people.
"What am I looking at?"
"Jamieeee..." You sighed grabbing his arm and taking him to the table. You took the box out of his hand and placed it down, beginning to go through the contents. "They're photos of peoples lives! There's photos in here from the 30s." Jamie waited for you to make a point. "Ugh, just... just look."
You took the photo of the couple in the drive way. He took it and squinted to see it better. He refused to get glasses no matter how much you insisted. You rolled your eyes and pointed at it.
"Doesn't it look like us? From the first night?"
Jamie's eyes softened as he realized what you were saying.
"Yeah... it does," he concurred, looking over at you. You grinned and started pulling out different photos.
"They're all photos of people in love. And this book!" You grabbed the book and held it up for him. "This book about forbidden romance and people willing to do anything to stay together.
Jamie smiled at you. You were so excited to show him this stuff. Even if it didn't make complete sense to him, it made you happy, and that made him happy.
"It just... it made me think about us," you said, softly, looking over the photos. "People have been writing and showing pepole their love just like us for centuries!" You looked up at Jamie and say his smile. Soft, and sweet, loving. You took a shaky breath, overwhelmed by your love for him. "It just shows that we would've found each other no matter what. We would've been timeless."
Jamie moved the box aside and wrapped you up in his arms, kissing you deeply. You gasped, but threw your own arms around his shoulders. You held on tightly to him, as if he was your life line.
He broke away from you, leaning his forehead on yours. "I love you, so much, you know that?" You nodded, blushing. "I love that you brought me these photos and this book to show me how much you love me. I love that you think that we're timeless. I just... love you."
You kissed him again. "Anything for you, Jaim."
He grinned at you again, squeezing your sides. "Now, lets eat this dinner and you can show me some more photos yeah?"
You nodded hasilty. He walked off into the kitchen to plate your meals but left you with a stupid smile on your face as you watched him. You had your own timeless romance. And one day, years from now, you would have your own box of photographs that someone could use to show their lover romance. Because the two of you were timeless.

Florence Sally Horner
Tumblr media
October 22, 2023
Florence "Sally" Horner was born on April 18, 1937 in Camden, New Jersey to Russell and Ella Horner. Sally's father took his own life when Sally was only 5 years old, and Ella raised her daughter as a single mother with the help of Sally's older half sister, Susan.
Sally was in the 5th grade at Northeast Elementary School and was an honours student.
In March 1948, Sally, who was 10 years old at the time tried to steal a notebook from a local store as a dare by some of her classmates. However, Sally was caught by a man named Frank La Salle. Frank had told Sally he was an FBI agent, and threatened to send her to a reform school unless she reported to him.
On June 15, 1948, Frank La Salle abducted 11 year old Sally. He told her to tell Ella that he was the father of two of her friends at school and she was invited on a week long vacation to Atlantic City.
Originally, the plan was to have Sally write her mother letters to let her know their vacation was going to last longer than expected, but on July 31, 1948, the last letter was received by Ella. Ella contacted the police, who found out the sender address for the letters was in Atlantic City.
On August 4, 1948, investigators found the home empty, besides two packed suitcases and a studio photo of Sally sitting on a swing. Ella told investigators that Sally and Frank were also travelling with a "Mrs. Robinson" who according to Frank was a 25 year old secretary. She left them after they arrived in Atlantic City supposedly.
Over the next 21 months, Frank and Sally moved through multiple US states under different names, with Frank claiming Sally was his daughter. Throughout this time, Frank would rape Sally repeatedly.
The pair first stayed in Baltimore, Maryland, where Sally went to Catholic grammar school under the name "Madeleine La Plante." Frank would always carry a handgun on him to stop Sally from trying to escape.
In April 1949, Frank and Sally were living in Dallas, Texas, and Sally was going by the name "Florence Planette." It was here that Sally ended up telling a friend her secret. Sally also confided in a neighbour, Ruth Janisch, who was becoming suspicious of Frank.
Ruth thought Frank had an extremely possessive attitude toward his supposed daughter. Ruth did not know that Frank also regularly molested her 5 year old daughter while Sally was at school.
In March 1950, Ruth and her husband moved to San Jose, California, to find work, encouraging Frank. to do the same so she could still have contact with Sally.
Eventually, Ruth was able to get Sally to tell her the truth about Frank, and Ruth got Sally to phone her family from Ruth's house. Sally attempted to call Ella but the line disconnected, as Ella had recently lost her job and was not able to pay her phone bill. Sally then called her sister Susan and was able to get in contact and tell her to get the FBI on it.
On March 22, 1950, Frank was arrested but continued to say Sally was his daughter. Authorities in New Jersey were able to confirm that Sally's real father had died 7 years previously. On April 1, 1950, Sally was reunited with her mother. Frank was sentenced to 30-35 years in Trenton State Prison on April 3.
Frank La Salle was 51 years old. at the time he abducted Sally. He was a known sex offender and went by several aliases. It is unclear where exactly he was born or even his date of birth. Most commonly the names used for his parents were Frank and Nora, and he was most likely from Chicago or Indianapolis. The most frequent date of birth he gave was May 27, between 1890-1901.
He had an extensive criminal record, beginning in June 1938. In 1944, Frank was convicted for the molestation and sexual assault of 5 underage girls in 1943. He was getting illegally married under false names and had many charges against him. He was released on January 15, 1948, only 6 months before he abducted Sally Horner.
Sally's story ends tragically, as on August 18, 1952, she died in a car accident near Woodbine, New Jersey due to breaking her neck in the crash. She was only 15 years old. Frank had actually sent a bouquet of flowers to Sally's funeral from prison, but they were not displayed.
Frank La Salle died on March 22, 1966, exactly 16 years to the date of when he was arrested for the abduction of Sally Horner. He was 69 years old.

1874 – British novelist and playwright W. Somerset Maugham (d.1965) was born in Paris, where his father Robert Ormond Maugham was an English lawyer who handled the legal affairs of the British embassy.
Maugham was sent back to England to be cared for by his uncle, a Vicar, in Kent. The move was damaging, as Henry Maugham proved cold and emotionally cruel. The boy attended The King's School, Canterbury, which was also difficult for him. He was teased for his bad English (French had been his first language) and his short stature, which he inherited from his father. Maugham developed a stammer that would stay with him all his life.
Miserable both at his uncle's vicarage and at school, the young Maugham developed a talent for making wounding remarks to those who displeased him. This ability is sometimes reflected in Maugham's literary characters. At sixteen, Maugham refused to continue at The King's School. His uncle allowed him to travel to Germany, where he studied literature, philosophy and German at Heidelberg University. During his year in Heidelberg, Maugham met and had a sexual affair with John Ellingham Brooks, an Englishman ten years his senior.
On his return to England, the local doctor suggested he enter the medical profession and Maugham's uncle agreed. Maugham had been writing steadily since the age of 15 and fervently wished to become an author, but as he was not of age, he refrained from telling his guardian. For the next five years, he studied medicine at St Thomas' Hospital in Lambeth, London.
Maugham kept his own lodgings, took pleasure in furnishing them, filled many notebooks with literary ideas, and continued writing nightly while at the same time studying for his medical degree. In 1897, he wrote his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, a tale of working-class adultery and its consequences. Liza of Lambeth's first print run sold out in a matter of weeks. Maugham, who had qualified as a doctor, dropped medicine and embarked on his 65-year career as a man of letters. He later said, "I took to it as a duck takes to water."
The famous playwright was twenty-one when Oscar Wilde was put on trial. It was enough to make him "publicly straight." Frightened by the Oscar Wilde trial, Maugham avoided treating homosexual themes and characters in his novels and plays. He later said that his biggest mistake was "I tried to persuade myself that I was three-quarters normal and that only quarter of me was queer — whereas it was the other way around."
By 1914 Maugham was famous, with 10 plays produced and 10 novels published. Too old to enlist when World War I broke out, Maugham served in France as a member of the British Red Cross's so-called "Literary Ambulance Drivers", a group of some 23 well-known writers, including the Americans John Dos Passos and E. E. Cummings. During this time, he met Frederick Gerald Haxton, a young San Franciscan, who became his companion and lover until Haxton's death in 1944. Throughout this period Maugham continued to write. He proofread Of Human Bondage at a location near Dunkirk during a lull in his ambulance duties. Maugham also worked for British Intelligence in mainland Europe during the war, having been recruited by John Wallinger; he was one of the network of British agents who operated in Switzerland against the Berlin Committee. Maugham was later recruited by William Wiseman to work in Russia
Although Maugham's first and many other sexual relationships were with men, he also had sexual relationships with a number of women. His affair with Syrie Wellcome produced a daughter named Liza. Syrie's husband Henry Wellcome sued his wife for divorce, naming Maugham as co-respondent. In May 1917, following the decree absolute, Syrie and Maugham were married. Syrie and Maugham divorced in 1927-8 after a tempestuous marriage complicated by Maugham's frequent travels abroad and strained by his relationship with Haxton.
The gap left by Haxton's death in 1944 was filled by Alan Searle. Maugham had first met Searle in 1928. Searle was a young man from the London slum area of Bermondsey and he had already been kept by older men. He proved a devoted if not a stimulating companion. Indeed one of Maugham's friends, describing the difference between Haxton and Searle, said simply: "Gerald was vintage, Alan was vin ordinaire."
Despite his wealth, his fame, and the love of his secretary-companion Gerald Haxton and later, Searle, Maugham died a bitter man but among the pantheon of the most prolific and read writers of the 20th century. And if you haven't read him, you've watched his stories. No less than 35 film shave been made from his novels and short stories including The Razor's Edge, Of Human Bondage, Being Julia, The Moon and Sixpence and Sadie Thompson (later called Rain.)

1892 – Lesbian writer Virginia Woolf was born in London (d.1941). The most celebrated of the Bloomsbury set, her writing is cerebral, and subtle.
Woolf was born Adeline Virginia Stephen on January 25, 1882, in Hyde Park Gate, London, the daughter of Leslie Stephen, a man of letters, and Julia Pattle Duckworth. Virginia's mother's first marriage ended with the death of her husband, leaving her with three children, one of whom, Gerald Duckworth, is known to have sexually molested Woolf as an adolescent.
Her adolescence was marked as well by a sequence of deaths and the first bout of a mental illness that would haunt her for the rest of her life: Her mother died in 1895; her half-sister Stella, who served as mother-substitute, in 1897; her father in 1904 and her brother Thoby in 1906. She experienced her first mental breakdown at the age of thirteen following her mother's death, while the final one ended with her suicide when she walked into the river Ouse on March 28, 1941.
Woolf developed her closest attachment to her sister Vanessa, what she called "a very close conspiracy." The two sisters functioned as co-conspirators in their alliance as women artists, on the one hand against the tyranny of the father who repeatedly sought to enlist their services as surrogate wives; on the other hand, against Victorian mores that considered marriage the only suitable profession for middle-class daughters.
Following Leslie Stephen's death, the four siblings moved to Bloomsbury, a section of London that would eventually give name to a group of artists and intellectuals, the Bloomsbury Group. This group began when her brother Thoby and his Cambridge friends moved back to London and met every Thursday evening to discuss art and literature, as well as pressing political issues such as pacifism and socialism. Initially, Virginia and Vanessa were the only two women present, as Thoby's sisters but also as intellectuals and artists. Several of the male participants were avowed homosexuals, including Lytton Strachey, who proposed to Virginia in 1909, although the engagement was almost immediately broken off.
Woolf's relationship to gay men remained an ambivalent one. On the one hand, she appreciated a lack of sexual interest that made it possible for her to have access to an intellectual environment based on an indifference to her gender; on the other hand, the absence of women meant a lacking female eroticism that for her prohibited creativity. Much later, on August 19, 1930, she wrote in a letter to Ethel Smyth: "It is true that I only want to show off to women. Women alone stir my imagination."
In 1912, she married Leonard Woolf, "a penniless Jew," also a member of the Bloomsbury Group, a political writer who had recently returned from service in India. This marriage is considered to have been a supportive although passionless one. In 1917, the Woolfs established Hogarth Press as an attempt to engage Virginia in more practical work in the hope of keeping at bay further bouts of mental illness. The Press published the works of several lesbian and gay writers, including E. M. Forster, Christopher Isherwood, and Vita Sackville-West.
Woolf had several intense friendships with women throughout her life. They often resulted in literary works, not always published, written as tribute to friendships that greatly fostered—but were ultimately confined to—writing. Often these women were older, unmarried, more masculine in appearance, and highly successful artists; often they offered Woolf some form of maternal protection as she struggled with another incident of physical or mental illness. None of these relationships is known to have had a sexual component.
Woolf's first passionate friendship was with Madge Vaughan, the daughter of the well-known writer and sexologist, John Addington Symonds, whom Woolf met at the age of sixteen and who was to serve as a model for Sally Seton in Mrs. Dalloway (1925). Violet Dickinson, almost twice Woolf's age when she nursed her during the mental breakdown following the death of her father, was an unmarried Quaker for whom she wrote "Friendship Gallery" (1907), a spoof biography that anticipates Orlando (1928). Much later Woolf looked back on this friendship as the one that enabled her to say for the first time with confidence, "I am a writer." The final of such friendships was with Ethel Smyth, a well-known composer, whom Virginia met in 1930, when Woolf was forty-eight and Smyth seventy years old.
Woolfe's greatest love was probably Vita Sackville-West, with whom she had the only intense friendship to include a physical relationship. Although married to Leonard Woolf, the ethos of Bloomsbury discouraged sexual exclusivity, and in 1922, when Woolf met poet and novelist Vita Sackville-West, after a tentative start they began a relationship that lasted through most of the 1920s. The sexual affair began in 1925, the point at which Woolf wrote in her Diary, "These Sapphists love women; friendship is never untinged with amorosity" (December 21), and is thought to have lasted until 1928. During that time, Vita took two trips to Persia to visit her husband who was working in the British embassy in Tehran. The second time she traveled in the company of another woman, which began to create a rift as Woolf became less and less tolerant of Vita's other affairs.
In 1928, Woolf and E. M. Forster wrote a letter defending Radclyffe Hall's Well of Loneliness, not as a good novel or because of its lesbian content, but in the name of free speech. Various members of Bloomsbury appeared at the obscenity trial prepared to testify as expert witnesses, including Woolf, who described her presence as a way of also defending Vita's Sapphism.
In 1928, Woolf presented Sackville-West with "Orlando," a fantastical biography in which the eponymous hero's life spans three centuries and both genders. It has been called by Nigel Nicolson, Vita Sackville-West's son, "the longest and most charming love letter in literature."
After their affair ended, the two women remained friends until Woolf's death in 1941.
