“The USS Braine (DD-630) transfers wounded to the battleship New Mexico (BB-40) during a dramatic moment for immediate medical attention after being hit by a Japanese six-inch shore battery off the shores of Tinian in the Mariana Islands on 14 June 1944.
The Braine and New Mexico were participants in support of the troop landings during the capture efforts of the islands of Saipan and Tinian. The battleship Colorado (BB-45) and the destroyer Norman Scott (DD-690) were both hit by six inch Japanese shore batteries. The Colorado was hit 22 times, killing 44 men. The Norman Scott was hit six times, killing the captain, Seymour Owens, and 22 of his seamen. After the battle, Tinian became an important base for further Allied bombing operations in the Pacific Campaign. Camps were built for 50,000 troops. Fifteen thousand Seabees turned the island into the busiest and largest airfield of the war, with six 2,400 m runways for attacks by B-29 Superfortress bombers on targets in the Philippines, the Ryukyu Islands and mainland Japan, including the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to help end hostilities in the Pacific.”

Polling: Americans dissatisfied with the state of the union (AP) The turbulence of impeachment, a contentious presidential campaign and a global virus health threat confront President Donald Trump as he prepares to deliver his State of the Union address Tuesday night. But one thing about the Trump era has remained remarkably steady: public opinion on the president. Approval of Trump has stayed persistently in negative territory, and the country is more polarized now than it has been under any other president in recent history. Polls also show Americans express significant dissatisfaction with the direction of the country and even more so with the state of politics.

Go calls for unity vs. terrorism
#PHnews: Go calls for unity vs. terrorism
MANILA – Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go called on Filipinos to unite against terrorism as he paid tribute to the ultimate sacrifice of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos who died in the so-called Mamasapano massacre on Jan. 25, 2015.
“Six years ago, our nation witnessed the death of 44 of our most gallant men in the Special Action Force, now widely known as the SAF 44. Through this ceremony, we remember their lives and their ultimate sacrifice that have helped make our country a safer place to live in,” Go said in a video message during the observance of the National Day of Remembrance for the SAF 44 last Monday.
Go urged Filipinos not to forget the heroism of the SAF 44.
“Hindi matutumbasan ang sakripisyo na kanilang ginawa para lang manatiling ligtas ang ating mga mamamayan at gawing mapayapa ang ating lipunan. Hindi rin natin mababayaran kailanman ang sakit na nararamdaman ng mga pamilya na kanilang naiwan (The sacrifice they made just to keep our people safe and to make our society peaceful cannot be measured. Nor can we ever pay for the pain felt by the families they left behind),” he said in a news release on Jan. 26.
President Rodrigo Duterte, in Proclamation 167 he signed in February 2017, declared January 25 of every year a “Day of National Remembrance” of the Fallen 44 who will henceforth serve as a “constant reminder of the continuing sacrifices being made by our valiant uniformed men and women in the line of duty.”
Go reaffirmed Duterte’s commitment to honor the memory of the slain members of the special police force by ensuring the welfare of the families they left behind.
“Sa mga pamilyang naiwan ng ating SAF 44, hindi po namin kayo pababayaan at iiwan. Asahan po ninyo ang patuloy na pagtulong at pag-alalay ng pamahalaan sa inyong lahat (To the families left behind by our SAF 44, we will not abandon you. Rest assured that the government will continue to help and support all of you),” he said.
He also thanked the Philippine National Police (PNP) for the critical role it plays in ensuring peace in communities nationwide, guaranteeing his support as it continues to perform its duties for the nation.
Go asked Filipinos to recall the daily sacrifices of the men and women of the PNP who are facing the same risks during these trying times as they take the lead in implementing the community quarantine protocols.
To protect further the welfare of men in uniform, he filed Senate Bill 393 in 2019, which seeks to provide free legal assistance to any officer or enlisted personnel of the PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines who is facing charges arising from any incident related to the performance of his or her official duties.
“Nasa front line natin ang ating mga kapulisan at mga sundalo sa kampanya ng pamahalaan upang masiguro na ligtas ang ating mga mamamayan mula sa banta ng mga kriminal, lalo na ang mga drug syndicates at mga terorista (Our police and soldiers are on the front line of the government’s campaign to make sure that our countrymen are safe from criminals, especially from drug syndicates and terrorists),” he said.
When he was still the Special Assistant to the President, Go said he personally sought support among lawmakers for the increase in salaries of the police, military, and other uniformed personnel, a campaign promise of the President, to make it “more commensurate with their critical role in maintaining national security and peace and order.”
On Jan. 25, 2015, SAF commandos carried out a law enforcement operation against two high-value targets, Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, and terrorist Abdul Basit Usman.
The SAF commandos were able to kill Marwan but failed to get Usman, who was later killed in another operation.
On their way out, a firefight occurred, which eventually trapped 45 SAF commandos, with only one surviving after swimming on a creek and hiding on bushes on his way out. (PR)

Best and not so best of prince Philip
The Montreal Gazette printed this today to 'honour' Phil in his retirement. It's a whole bunch of quotes from him throughout the years. Not meant as an opinion, just as some weird info 1. "British women can’t cook” (in Britain in 1966). 2. “What do you gargle with, pebbles?” (speaking to singer Tom Jones after the 1969 Royal Variety Performance). 3. “I declare this thing open, whatever it is.” (on a visit to Canada in 1969) 4. “Everybody was saying we must have more leisure. Now they are complaining they are unemployed.” (during the 1981 recession) 5. “If it has got four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it.” (at a 1986 World Wildlife Fund meeting). 6. “It looks like a tart’s bedroom.” (on seeing plans for the Duke and Duchess of York’s house at Sunninghill Park in 1988) 7. “Yak, yak, yak; come on get a move on.” (shouted from the deck of Britannia in Belize in 1994 to the Queen who was chatting to her hosts on the quayside) 8. “You are a woman, aren’t you?”(In Kenya, in 1984, after accepting a small gift from a local woman) 9. “If the man had succeeded in abducting Anne, she would have given him a hell of a time while in captivity.” (On a gunman who tried to kidnap the Princess Royal in 1974) 10. “We didn’t have counsellors rushing around every time somebody let off a gun, asking ‘Are you all right? Are you sure you don’t have a ghastly problem?’ You just got on with it.” (about the Second World War commenting on modern stress counselling for servicemen in 1995) 11. “How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?” (to a driving instructor in Oban, Scotland, during a 1995 walkabout) 12. “If a cricketer, for instance, suddenly decided to go into a school and batter a lot of people to death with a cricket bat, which he could do very easily, I mean, are you going to ban cricket bats?” (in 1996, amid calls to ban firearms after the Dunblane shooting) 13. “Bloody silly fool!” (in 1997, referring to a Cambridge University car park attendant who did not recognize him) 14. “It looks as if it was put in by an Indian.” (pointing at an old-fashioned fusebox in a factory near Edinburgh in 1999) 15. “Deaf? Samsung galaxy S8
Tumblr media
The Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S8+ (shortened to S8 and S8+, respectively) and Samsung Galaxy S8 Active are Androidsmartphones (with the S8+ being the phablet smartphone) produced by Samsung Electronics as the eighth generation of the Samsung Galaxy S series. The S8 and S8+ were unveiled on 29 March 2017 and directly succeeded the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, with a North American release on 21 April 2017 and international rollout throughout April and May. The S8 Active was announced on 8 August 2017 and is exclusive to certain U.S. cellular carriers.
The S8 and S8+ contain upgraded hardware and major design changes over the S7 line, including larger screens with a taller aspect ratio and curved sides on both the smaller and larger models, iris and face recognition, a new suite of virtual assistant features known as Bixby (along with a new dedicated physical button for launching the assistant), a shift from MicroUSB to USB-C charging, and Samsung DeX, a docking stationaccessory that allows the phones to be used with a desktop interface with keyboard and mouse input support. The S8 Active features tougher materials designed for protection against shock, shatter, water and dust, with a metal frame and a tough texture for improved grip that makes the S8 Active have a rugged design. The Active's screen measures the same size as the standard S8 model but loses the curved edges in favor of a metal frame.
The S8 and S8+ received mostly positive reviews. Their design and form factor received praise, while critics also liked the updated software and camera optimizations. They received criticism for duplicate software apps, lackluster Bixby features at launch, for the placement of the fingerprint sensor on the rear next to the camera. A video published after the phones' release proved that the devices' facial and iris scanners can be fooled by suitable photographs of the user.
The S8 and S8+ were in high demand at release. During the pre-order period, a record one million units were booked in South Korea, and overall sales numbers were 30% higher than the Galaxy S7. However, subsequent reports in May announced sales of over five million units, a notably lower first-month sales number than previous Galaxy S series models.
On March 11, 2018, Samsung launched the successor to the S8, the Samsung Galaxy S9.

History[edit]
Prior to its official announcement, media outlets reported on rumors and information from industry insiders. In December 2016, SamMobilereported that the Galaxy S8 would not feature a 3.5 mm headphone jack,[10] later reported to be a false rumor.[11] In January 2017, The Guardianreported on bigger screens for both of the two phone sizes, with edge-to-edge "infinity" displays and very limited bezels, and an iris scanner.[12]Additionally, The Guardian stated that the phones would come with 64 gigabytes of storage and support microSD cards, use USB-C connectors, and feature a "Bixby" intelligent personal assistant.[12][13][14] Soon after, VentureBeat revealed photos of the phones and additional details, including the lack of physical navigation and home buttons, in which the fingerprint sensor was moved to the back of the phone.[15][16][17] Evan Blass tweeted in mid-March about color options for the phones.[18][19]
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ were officially unveiled on 29 March 2017, with pre-orders beginning 30 March and official U.S. release on 21 April 2017.[20][21] Following Best Buy retail listings in March,[22] Samsung opened pre-orders for unlocked U.S. handsets on 9 May 2017, with availability starting 31 May.[23][24]
The devices have also been released internationally. On 21 April 2017, they were made available in South Korea,[25] Canada,[26] and Taiwan.[27]On 28 April, they were made available in the United Kingdom,[28] Australia,[29] Ireland,[30] and Russia.[31] followed by Singapore one day later.[32]On 5 May, they were made available in Malaysia.[33] New Zealand,[34] India,[35] the Philippines,[36] and Thailand.[37] followed by Brazil on 12 May.[38] On 25 May, they were made available in China,[39] and Hong Kong.[40] On 8 June, they were made available in Japan.[41]
In July 2017, pictures of the Galaxy S8 Active were leaked on Reddit,[42][43] and the following month, AT&T "accidentally" confirmed its existence through a document in a promotional campaign.[44][45] It officially became available for pre-order, exclusively through AT&T, on 8 August 2017, with in-store purchase available 11 August.[46] VentureBeat reported in late September that the device would also become available through T-Mobile in November,[47] and Samsung subsequently confirmed both T-Mobile and Sprint availability in early November.[48]
Specifications[edit]
Hardware[
edit
]
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ both feature 1440p OLED displays, with an 18.5:9 (37:18) aspect ratio taller than the 16:9 ratio used by the majority of smartphones; the S8 has a 5.8-inch panel, while the S8+ uses a larger 6.2-inch panel. The displays on both devices curve along the side bezels of the device, with minimal bezels that Samsung markets as an "infinity display", and the display panel itself has rounded edges.[20] They use DCI-P3, offering what screen-testing website DisplayMate describes as the largest native color gamut, highest peak brightness, highest contrast rating in ambient light, highest screen resolution, lowest reflectance, and highest contrast ratio.[49][50] The S8 features an octa-core Exynos 8895 system-on-chip and 4 GB of RAM; models in North American and East Asian markets utilize the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 instead. Both chips are manufactured by Samsung with a 10 nm process.[20][51] They contain 64 GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD card.[20] The Galaxy S8 is one of the first smartphones to support Bluetooth 5, supporting new capabilities such as connecting two wireless headphones to the device at once.[52] It is also bundled with Harman AKG earbuds.[53][54] Both smartphones have improved satellite navigation over the predecessors by including Galileo receivers.[5] In the United States, the S8 and S8+ are available in Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, and Arctic Silver color options, whereas gold and blue are available internationally.[20] The blue option was made available in the U.S. in July 2017.[55][56]
Unlike past Galaxy S series models, the S8 line does not feature physical navigation keys, electing to use on-screen keys instead.[20] However, unlike other implementations, the home button can still be activated if it is hidden or the screen is off. The S8's display features pressure sensitivity limited to the home button.[57] To prevent the home button from burn-in damage, its position moves slightly.[58][59] While The Vergeclaims that the S8 uses exactly the same 12-megapixel rear camera as the S7, though with software improvements,[20] a report from PhoneArenaclaims that the phones carry new, custom camera modules.[60] The front-facing camera was upgraded to an 8-megapixel sensor with autofocus.[20][61] The S8 features fingerprint and iris scanners; the fingerprint reader is relocated to the rear of the device, to the left of the camera, due to the removal of the physical home button.[20] In addition to an iris scanner, the S8 also features face-scanning as an option to unlock the phone.[62][63] Face recognition technology had previously been implemented in earlier models since the Galaxy S III.[64]
The S8 and S8+ use non-removable 3000 and 3500 mAh batteries respectively; Samsung stated that it had engineered the batteries to retain their capacity for a longer period of time than previous models.[61] The S8 supports AirFuel Inductive (formerly PMA)[65] and Qi wireless chargingstandards.[20] Due to the recalls of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, Samsung said in a press conference it is committed to stricter quality control and safety testing procedures on all of the company's future products.[66]
Samsung also launched a Galaxy S8+ with 128 GB of storage and 6 GB of RAM exclusively in China and South Korea, and a bundle offer in the countries provides both the exclusive model and the Samsung DeX docking station.[67][68] The unique variant was also released in India in June 2017.[69]
The Galaxy S8 Active features a rugged design and significantly tougher materials to make it shock, shatter, water, and dust resistant. It has a larger battery than either of the regular S8s, at 4000 mAh. Unlike the previous phones in the Active line, the S8 Active does not have tactile buttons, instead using onscreen keys like the regular variants of the S8. It also no longer has the dedicated action button of previous versions which could be reprogrammed to be a shortcut to favorite apps, with the action button being replaced with the Bixby button. The "infinity" edge display of the standard models is removed, replaced with a metal frame and bumpers in the corners to protect from shocks, while the back is fitted with a "rugged, tough texture for a secure grip". Its screen also measures 5.8 inches, the size of the regular S8, and has quad HD Super AMOLED in 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The S8 Active is sold in Meteor Gray, but AT&T also has a Titanium Gold color.[46] The T-Mobile US version of the S8 Active also supports the company's 600 MHz LTE network that was starting to be rolled out at the time the device was announced.[70]
Software[
edit
]
The Galaxy S8 launched with the Android 7.0 "Nougat" operating system with the proprietary Samsung Experience (formerly TouchWiz) user interface and software suite.[61] The software features a suite of assistant functions known as "Bixby", which is designed primarily to interact with Samsung's bundled applications and other supported services. The feature allows the use of voice commands to perform phone functions, can generate cards shown on a home screen page (replacing the Flipboard integration formerly featured) based on a user's interactions, and perform searches utilizing object recognition via the camera.[20]
Bixby supports third-party integration via an SDK.[61] The S8 supports the use of a docking station known as Samsung DeX to access a PC-like desktop environment on an external display, with support for mouse and keyboard input.[71] On 21 April 2017, coinciding with the phone's official retail date, reports surfaced that the default music player on the Galaxy S8 would be Google Play Music, continuing a trend that started with the S7 in 2016. However, for the S8, Samsung partnered with Google to incorporate additional exclusive features into the app, including the ability to upload up to 100,000 tracks to the service's cloud storage, an increase from the 50,000 tracks users are normally allowed to upload. Additionally, new users get a three-month free trial to the service, the same as given to users who purchase Google's own Pixel smartphone. Furthermore, Google stated that more Samsung-exclusive features will be added to the app in the future, and that the Bixby assistant will also be supported by the app.[72][73] Bixby replaces S Voice, the voice recognition technology previously found in Samsung Galaxy models.[74]
In May 2017, Google announced that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will support the company's Daydream virtual reality platform after Samsung rolls out a software update scheduled for mid-2017.[75][76] In July 2017, Verizon began rolling out an update for its devices, with support for Daydream.[77][78] The Galaxy S8 was one of the first Android phones to support ARCore, Google's augmented reality engine.[79][80]
In February 2018, the official Android 8.0 Oreo update began rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S8+, and Samsung Galaxy S8 Active.[81]
Reception[edit]
The S8 Active, released in August 2017, is a more
rugged
version of the S8
Besides the phone's protective case reportedly cracking and peeling away in under 2 months of use, Dan Seifert of The Verge praised the design of the Galaxy S8, describing it as a "stunning device to look at and hold" that was "refined and polished to a literal shine", and adding that it "truly doesn't look like any other phone you might have used before". The hardware of the device was described as "practically flawless". Seifert also liked the new software, writing that "Samsung is known less for polish and more for clumsiness. In a refreshing change of pace, the software on the S8 is, dare I say, good [sic]". However, he criticized the Bixby assistant, writing that "in its current state, it doesn’t do much at all", and also criticized the number of duplicate apps. Regarding performance, he wrote that the S8 was "fast and responsive, but so is virtually every other premium phone you can buy, and the S8 isn’t noticeably faster or quicker than a Google Pixel, LG G6, or iPhone 7".[82] Fellow Verge reporter Vlad Savov felt that the placement of the fingerprint sensor was "a perplexing decision if we consider it as a deliberate design choice", but noted reports from Korea claiming that Samsung had originally intended for the fingerprint reader to be built directly into the screen, but was unable to reach a desirable implementation in time for release.[83] The Verge wrote that "Samsung’s six-month-old S8 has cutting edge features and design with fewer issues than other Android phones" like the Google Pixel 2 and LG V30, and that the "OLED screen stretches to the edges of the device and curves on its sides in an almost liquid fashion. It makes the S8 look just as fresh today as it did when it debuted", and pointing out that the S8's popularity and carrier support guaranteed plenty of third-party accessories.[84]
Chris Velazco of Engadget similarly praised the design, stating that "from their rounded edges to their precisely formed metal-and-glass bodies, they feel like smaller, sleeker versions of the Galaxy Note 7", and also praised the display as being simply "awesome". Velazco also praised the software, calling Samsung's added interface "subtle and thoughtful in its design choices". While noting that the Bixby assistant wasn't ready yet, he did compliment the promised voice features as being more granular than those offered through Siri or Google Assistant, and wrote that "With that kind of complexity involved, maybe it's no surprise this stuff isn't done yet". Also praising performance and the camera, though noting that "The 12-megapixel sensors on the back haven't changed much since last year. That's not a bad thing since they were great cameras to start with", Velazco summarized his review by writing that the devices "aren't perfect, but they're as close as Samsung has ever gotten".[85] Brandon Russell of TechnoBuffalo claimed that the camera could not beat Google's Pixel smartphone.[86]
Ron Amadeo of Ars Technica noted that the device's unusual aspect ratio resulted in pillarboxing when watching 16:9 video without zooming or stretching it. He complimented the feel of the S8, calling it "perfected", but criticized the glass back for being "more fragile" and that "Glossy, slippery glass doesn't feel as good in your hand as metal does, either. For the top-tier premium price tag, we'd prefer Samsung to put in the extra work and use a metal back". He criticized the biometric options for unlocking the phones, writing that "There's an iris scanner, a fingerprint reader, and face unlock. The problem is none of them are any good", and also criticized duplicate apps, writing that "most of which can't be removed and aren't very compelling". Additionally, he criticized Bixby, calling it "an odd addition" due to the phone's Google Assistant functionality already present.[87]
Prior to the phone's official announcement, reports suggested that Bixby would support "7-8 languages" at launch.[88] Later reports after the phone's announcement clarified that Bixby would only support Korean and American English languages at its release, though noting that more languages would be coming "in the following months".[89][90] In mid-April, The Wall Street Journalreported that Bixby would be launched without support for American English.[91][92] On 19 July 2017, Samsung announced that Bixby had begun rolling out to Galaxy S8 users in the United States.[93][94]
Sales[edit]
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ broke pre-order records in South Korea, with more than 720,000 units booked in one week, a notable increase from the 100,000 units of the Galaxy S7 and 200,000 units of the Note 7.[95][96] By mid-April, the number had increased to one million pre-orders.[97][98] On 24 April 2017, Samsung announced that sales of the Galaxy S8 was its "best ever". Although it did not release specific sales numbers, it announced that sales of the S8 were 30% higher year-over-year than the Galaxy S7.[99][100] Subsequent reports in May announced that Samsung had sold over five million units.[101][102] Jon Fingas of Engadget wrote that, although Samsung advertised its pre-order records, sales comparisons to other models on the market were difficult due to unannounced sales figures.[103]
Issues[edit]
White balance[
edit
]
Prior to the official release, it was reported that some Galaxy S8 displays had a bad white balance, causing them to exhibit a reddish tint.[104] Samsung stated that the Galaxy S8 was "built with an adaptive display that optimizes the colour range, saturation, and sharpness depending on the environment", but noted that the device's operating system provides settings for manually adjusting the display's appearance and white balance.[104][105][106] On 21 April, Samsung stated that the red tinting was purely a software issue, and would be patched in a future update.[107]The Investor reported that Samsung would replace the affected devices if a software update did not fix the issue.[108] Updates in various regions started rolling out in early May, fixing the issue.[109][110][111]
Random restarts[
edit
]
Reports surfaced at the end of April that some Galaxy S8 devices were "restarting by themselves". Samsung has not yet commented on the issue.[112][113]
Facial recognition screenInsecure facial recognition[
edit
]
Shortly after the phone's unveiling, bloggers produced a video showing that the Galaxy S8's facial recognition scanner could be tricked to unlock the phone by showing it a photo of the user.[114][115] In a statement to Business Insider, a Samsung spokesperson stated that "Facial recognition is a convenient action to open your phone – similar to the 'swipe to unlock' action. We offer the highest level of biometric authentication – fingerprint and iris – to lock your phone and authenticate access to Samsung Pay or Secure Folder".[116]

24: Live Another Day
24: Live Another Day
Edit In May 2013, Deadline first reported that Fox was considering a limited-run “event series” for 24 based on a concept by Howard Gordon , after failed efforts to produce the 24 feature film and the cancellation of Kiefer Sutherland ‘s series Touch . David Fury confirmed on Twitter that he would also be involved, pulling “double duty” with Gordon’s new series Tyrant . [1] The following week, Fox officially announced 24: Live Another Day , a limited-run series of twelve episodes that would feature the return of Jack Bauer . Fox CEO Kevin Reilly said that the series would essentially represent the twelve “most important” hours of a typical 24 season, with jumps forward between hours as needed. As with the rest of Fox’s push into event programming, the production was promised to have “a big scope and top talent and top marketing budgets.” Reilly also noted that the project could pave the way for sequel series in the future. [2] In the press release, Gordon said: “ Jack Bauer has always been an exciting, thrilling character, and I confess that I’ve missed him. I think the audience has too. The character has evolved through the years, and this new and exciting event series format is perfect to tell the next chapter of his story and continue to reflect how the world is changing. Fans can rest assured that the Jack they know and love will be back. ” Kiefer Sutherland , who was confirmed to executive produce and star in the new series, added: “ The response to ‘24’ is unlike anything I have ever experienced as an actor before. To have the chance to reunite with the character, Jack Bauer, is like finding a lost friend. The story ideas from Howard Gordon are exciting and fresh, and will not disappoint. Great thanks to 20th Century Fox Television, Imagine Television and the FOX network for this opportunity. Make no mistake, my goal is to knock your socks off. See you soon. ” In June, it was announced that Jon Cassar was signed to executive produce and direct multiple episodes of Live Another Day , including the first two. [3] Executive producers and writers Robert Cochran , Manny Coto and Evan Katz also returned, with Coto and Katz serving as showrunners. [4] [5] Sean Callery composed the score for the series. [7] The first episode, ” 11:00am-12:00pm “, was written by Evan Katz & Manny Coto [8] and the second, ” 12:00pm-1:00pm “, by Robert Cochran and David Fury . [9] Returning 24 director Milan Cheylov directed episodes 9 and 10. [10] On July 11 , 2013 , executive producer Brian Grazer announced in an interview that the 24 miniseries would “be a limited series that would then spin off into a series itself. Fox is doing it, Fox studio and Fox network, and we’re totally thrilled by that.” [11] Casting After Kiefer Sutherland , Mary Lynn Rajskub was announced as the second official cast member in August 2013 , reprising her role as Chloe O’Brian . [12] In September 2013, it was revealed Kim Raver was negotiating a deal to return as Audrey . It was also revealed that the new President of the United States would be a character the audience has met before, leading to speculation that William Devane ‘s James Heller would be returning as President. [13] On October 4 it was confirmed that both Raver and Devane had signed deals to rejoin the cast. [14] In November 2013, Canadian actor Michael Wincott was announced as the first new cast member, portraying an infamous hacker and activist named Adrian . [15] Soon after, Gbenga Akinnagbe and Giles Matthey were cast as series regulars, playing CIA agents Erik Ritter and Jordan Reed . [16] At the TCA panel on January 13, 2014, Fox announced that Yvonne Strahovski had joined the cast as Kate Morgan , a CIA field operative on the trail of Jack Bauer. [21] However, in February, Davis left the role after personal matters prevented her from traveling to London for filming. [22] Davis was replaced by Game of Thrones actress Michelle Fairley . [23] In December 2013, David Fury sent out a pair of tweets suggesting that Carlos Bernard could return to portray Tony Almeida . [24] Bernard ultimately did not appear, but an ” extra scene ” involving Almeida will appear on the season Blu-ray Disc set . [25] Filming Edit 24: Live Another Day filmed on location in London , United Kingdom . [26] Pre-production and location scouting by the crew, including Jon Cassar , began in November 2013. [27] The production offices for Live Another Day were based in the Gillette Building in west London, previously used for films such as Red 2 . [28] Production began on January 6 , 2014 , with filming scheduled to occur from January 25 through June 13 . [25] Reception Edit As of May 7, 2014, 24: Live Another Day holds a rating of 70 out of 100 on the review aggregator site Metacritic, indicating “generally favorable” reviews.” [43] On Rotten Tomatoes, another review aggregator, the series currently holds a score of 84%, and is considered “Certified Fresh.” [44] The two-hour premiere episode received generally positive reviews. Merrill Barr ( Forbes ) compared the premiere favorably to previous seasons of 24 , stating that “The audience is given reason to care about Jack and his associates again because events are given reason to matter again… Here, much like in seasons one and two , everything ties together. The plot Jack’s trying to stop has a direct connection to the lives of multiple supporting characters he’s yet to interact with. It’s this dynamic that made the show great once, and will make it great again.” [45] Aaron Riccio ( Slant Magazine ) wrote that the twelve-episode format was a promising development, and that “the result is a leaner, scrappier 24 that is both firmly within its comfort zone…and somehow outside it, with Jack and the other returning characters more readily showing the wear and tear of their profession.” [46] Other reviews were less positive; Jeff Jensen ( Entertainment Weekly ) criticized the reuse of story elements and character archetypes, concluding that “Despite the high-grade action, the premiere is more a showcase for everything that was bad about 24 than a reminder of everything that was good.” [47] Reception for the season’s finale was generally positive [48] [49] and ratings for the finale were up to 21% from the previous installment. [50] Despite airing in mid-2014, Live Another Day competed in the 2014-2015 season at the Primetime Emmy Awards , as it had not aired half of its episodes by the May 31 , 2014 deadline to qualify for the 2013-2014 awards. [51] Live Another Day was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards in the Miniseries or Movie category: Outstanding Music Composition (Original Dramatic Score), Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing, and Outstanding Sound Editing. Running an Internet marketing campaign will be unsuccessful unless you take into account the importance of SEO or Search Engine Optimization. If you ignore or skimp on this part of the equation, you will surely fail at promoting your website, product or service. While the acronym SEO is bandied about with abandon by gurus and would-be gurus, most Internet marketers have little idea what it means or where to start to get their site in shape to be in the top 10 of search engine results pages. Even those with some knowledge are always learning, expanding and evolving with the ever-changing algorithms and strategies that will produce targeted traffic on a consistent basis.
Advertising has been an integral part of business for a long time. Advertising to reach new clientele is a time-honored tradition that has been universally accepted to promote products and services. The difference between a geographically located store and a virtual store is extreme. While you can hang a sign in your physical store, there is a totally different method to attract visitors to your virtual outlet. If you are lucky enough to already have a customer base, you need only add your website URL to your business card and inform your clients. If you are new to the Internet and are trying to carve out a niche online, search engine advertising and knowing the ins and outs of SEO will make or break you.
There are a number of free and low cost advertising methods available on the web with varying degrees of success, but if you want a lot of traffic on a continuous basis, you'll need to really learn and understand the search engine advertising methodology.
While Google isn't the only search engine out there, it is the best known and it uses a variety of complex algorithms to arrive at which websites should be listed in the top 10 on relevant keywords or search terms. When you type in the search term "red nail polish cheap", for example, a certain website will be listed as #1 on Google. People will usually click on the first search term they see and as a result if you can attain that position versus position 4,234,030, you will get significantly more visitors looking for red nail polish. How you accomplish this feat falls under the purview of SEO. If you can understand this example, it will be immediately clear just how important it is to optimize your website.
With the "Why Optimize" clarified, lets talk about how you accomplish it. Most larger business go out and hire an SEO specialist who has their ear to the Internet ground with their thumb on the pulse of search engine algorithms. The world of SEO is complex and their are people who do nothing but navigate the industry for you. Their services do not come cheap; however, the results can be amazing and your company can benefit exponentially. Business owners who utilize SEO specialists versus the do-it-yourself method will have a distinct edge when it comes to ranking and position.
Some of the basics to familiarize yourself with include keyword density, META tags, titles, backlinks, unique content and the like.
Keyword density is measured by the number of words on a page divided by the number of times a particular keyword or keyword phrase appears on that same page. The concept behind keyword density rests in the fact that if a particular word or phrase appears a certain amount of times, when a visitor searches on that word, your webpage will appear nearer the top because it is more relevant to the searcher's interest. For instance, web pages on dog toys will never appear in a search result about nail polish. While this is fairly straightforward, it is more complex than that. If you put the word "nail polish" on a page too many times, you will incur penalties because it will be deemed inappropriate. Search engines will think you are trying to cheat the system and your page will wind up 4,000 pages down in the results.
META tags are part of the HTML code where you tell visiting search engines (called spiders) what your web page is all about. In conjunction with the META description, the search engine will put you in certain relevant search results and use the META description as the description in the listing. Again, you will want to avoid putting irrelavent keywords and idiotic descriptions in these areas because you will be penalized and your page dropped into obscurity.

Inbound links, also called backlinks are also taken into account when spiders visit your site. The more backlinks, the more popular your site. A backlink or inbound link is where somebody quotes you on their website and lists your site in the quotation or write up. As a result, the more backlinks you receive, the more search engines think you have some good, useful information to share. Otherwise, why would somebody else list you on their site if all you had on your site was junk. Logical, eh? Different search engines take backlink relevancy more or less into account.
Unique content or low duplicate content is another important factor for search engines. They will compare the content on your site to the content on every other indexed (listed) site in their database. If they find a ton of other websites with the exact same content, you will be penalized for duplicate content. Their thinking is that you are simply taking content from other places and placing it on your site. It is just junk to fill up the site. So, keep it to a minimum and use as much original content as possible. If you do cite or use content from another website, give them the love through using only a portion and giving them a link back to their total article. In your write up, give them credit, and write up your thoughts and feelings on what you've read. In that way, you will be creating original content and not snatching others hard work. It will be viewed as unique content.
If you can't string three words together, there are professional freelances on the Internet who are willing and capable for a fee to provide you with as much unique content as you need on any subject you desire. This extra step and small investment will insure that your website is valuable to your visitors and a site that the search engines adore. It will all convert into more sales for your business in the end.

2020 IP filings down but seen to post record growth post-Covid-19
#PHnews: 2020 IP filings down but seen to post record growth post-Covid-19
MANILA – For the first time since its establishment in 1998, filings at the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) were down across all types of intellectual property (IP) as the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic had brought about a wait-and-see situation for many innovators and creators.
From January to December 2020, applications for trademarks contracted by 10 percent year-on-year to a total of 35,274, and patents declined by 9 percent to 3,648.
“The sluggish flow of IP applications last year, which signify lower commitments to new intangible assets, was expected given the economic uncertainties subduing investment appetite,” IPOPHL Director General Rowel Barba said in a statement Wednesday.
“But with the gradual opening up of the economy and the anticipated vaccine rollout, we hope to see more fresh investments in IP assets this year,” he added.
Utility model filings took the biggest hit, plunging 45 percent to 1,235 year-on-year, followed by industrial design by 23 percent to 1,259. Meanwhile, copyright deposits slipped 44 percent to 940.
2020 was also marked as the year with the steepest drop in trademark and utility model applications.
Resident trademark filers, which accounted for the bulk, declined 10 percent to 21,034.
Filings from non-residents edged down 14 percent to 6,827 while those made under the international Madrid Protocol slid 8 percent to 7,413.
Resident filers for utility models maintained the lion’s share of filings but declined by 47 percent to 1,150. Non-resident applicants decreased slightly by 3 percent to 85.
Patent applications by residents went down 6 percent to 407 while non-residents slid 12 percent to 322. Foreign filings made under the Patent Cooperation Treaty decreased 9 percent to 2,919.
Resident filers for industrial designs declined 37 percent to 642 while non-resident applications increased 1 percent to 671.
 Industrial renewal to favor innovators
On the decrease of patent filings in particular --a widely used proxy for research and innovative activities-- Barba expressed hopes this will be temporary.
Barba also hopes the trend today would resemble that in the post-financial crisis of 2008 when patenting activities dropped immediately following the recession but experienced sharp growth that surpassed pre-global economic crisis rates.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), global patent filings in 2012 grew by 9.2 percent, the fastest in 18 years. In the same year, industrial design counts grew by an all-time record rate of 17 percent.
In the Philippines, WIPO data show that patent filings in 2015 registered an annual growth of 52 percent, the fastest in 14 years.
“Past global crises have reconstructed industries, eliminating the less efficient firms or compelling a repurposing amongst them while accentuating the competitiveness of the more dynamic and the more agile who recover. And historically, those who put research and innovation at the center of their strategies are those who stand and thrive in the face of disruptions,” Barba said.
“Thus, lower filings may signal a redirection of growth paths, favoring the highly competitive and innovative, rather than stymied innovation,” he said.
The IPOPHL chief said the agency will be working hard for filing activities in 2021 to rebound. Strategies include intensifying education campaigns on the benefits of IP protection and effective IP asset management in business and innovation pursuits.
IPOPHL will also continue improving processes to have the front to back-end operations fully digitized by the end of the year.
“Digitizing will allow not only wider access of IPOPHL services among inventors and creators but will, just as importantly, elevate our quality of service in a way that will entice local and global stakeholders to protect their IP and create value for the future,” Barba added. (PR)

E. Visayas okays permits of 49 firecracker retailers, dealers
#PHnews: E. Visayas okays permits of 49 firecracker retailers, dealers
TACLOBAN CITY – Eastern Visayas has 45 authorized retailers and four dealers of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices this holiday season, the police regional office here has reported.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) through the Regional Civil Security Unit (RSCU) has approved the special permits of 10 retailers in Eastern Samar, nine each in Leyte and Samar, six in Biliran, five each in Northern Samar and Southern Leyte, and one in Tacloban City plus the four authorized dealers.
RSCU clerk chief executive, Master Sgt. Joessie Delantar, said the number of retailers and dealers that secured special permits for this holiday season is lower compared to last year's 56 and six, respectively.
"This has to do with the ongoing health crisis. Many have decided not to sell due to expected decrease in sales as movement and quarantine restrictions remain in place to contain the spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19)," he said in a virtual press conference on Thursday.
Delantar said they conduct regular inspection of establishments in line with the intensified crackdown against the manufacture and sale of illegal firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices including piccolo, watusi, giant whistle bomb, giant bawang, large Judas belt, super lolo, lolo thunder, boga, and goodbye Philippines.
Persons caught manufacturing, selling, distributing, or using these illegal firecrackers may face a fine of PHP20,000-PHP30,000 or imprisonment of six months to one year, cancellation of license and business permit, and confiscation of inventory stocks.
From Dec. 21 last year to Jan. 6, 2020, the region recorded a total of 15 firecracker-related injuries in the region due to the use of boga, kwitis, five star, whistle bomb, recycled firecracker powder, binggala and piccolo.
The figure is 66 percent lower than 44 recorded injuries within the same reporting period in the previous year, according to the Department of Health.
Meanwhile, the police reported four incidents of indiscriminate firing, all involving civilians.
To maintain the downward trend of firecracker injuries in the region, Delantar urged everyone to use alternative noise-making and other equally enjoyable ways to celebrate and welcome the New Year without the risk of physical harm, except for "torotot" or whistle that would risk the spread of Covid-19 due to respiratory droplets.
The PNP also enjoins local government units to support this campaign by strictly enforcing the Executive Order 28 signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2017 that provides for the regulation and control of the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.
Meanwhile, as part of its “Ligtas Paskuhan” campaign to ensure a safe Christmas season, the police regional office here has already deployed some 1,643 personnel in assistance hubs, churches, malls, public market, firecrackers display zones, community firecrackers zones, terminals, seaports, and airport.
This is on top of the anti-criminality teams deployed in the region. (PNA)
