We always say Larrie theories are insane, but hearing Louis say they’re actually insane is actually so validating.
I’ve seen tons of people outside of the fandom talking about the whole thing and they’re all on Louis’ side. I saw a big account outside the fandom say how they were thinking about it and did euphoria really need that Larry scene? (Obviously everything about it and who was involved in it aside) whenever something like this happens, it makes ppl wake up a little. It’s so easy to just ignore or poke fun at Larry, but when ppl actually take a step back they’re always weirded out by that cult and that it still exists. Larries are not the majority, in their heads they are, but outside the fandom and especially irl believing in Larry is weird, cringey and very much 2013 behavior. And Louis thinks so too. Larries can make all the jokes they want and spin this so they’re the victim, nobody but them thinks they are.
When they were in the band, at least there was some plausible reason to think that Louis and Harry had contact a few times during each year (even if it was only on stage).
Yet when we look back, during 2014 and 2015, Harry traveled without the other guys, either by himself or with Xander Ritz. Harry talked to Ben Winston whenever the band traveled (Brazil 2014). The times the band spent together were for 1D photo ops. Harry came to Lottie Tomlinson’s birthday party with Xander Ritz, and left soon after arrival with Xander, through a gauntlet of photographers at the front door. The more that time passes (and as much as I despise him as a person), the more Dan Wootton’s 2015 article rings true (not only about Larry but about the business aspects).
“Larry Stylinson” figured so prominently in the business of One Direction that Sony eventually used it for marketing (Harry and Louis during MITAM promo, the way they were positioned for photos, the rainbow bears, even Eroda). In some ways, because Sony made Harry a “star” with his own fanbase, Louis has inherited the bulk of this mythology in his solo career, and the longer that time has passed, the more Larrie fantasies and head canons have become a version of fossilized religious text that new Larries cling to.
It’s even more important for Larries to grasp on to old pieces of mythology because the two men have not interacted publicly for almost nine years. In 2023, it’s weird to see “Larry proof” that consists of 2012 1D interviews, or green and blue pieces of clothing or nail polish colors, or Louis’ signature smiley faces on the Pleasing Instagram account.
Fans are not responsible for Harry or Louis marketing Larry to them. They are responsible for not realizing they are being marketed to, because it’s been pointed out to them again and again. They are responsible for deliberately misinterpreting the content given. They have no one else to blame but themselves.

2000's and Beyond: Modern Fic
In this iteration of Fic History, we’re going to be exploring the fic culture in mega-fandoms from the early 2000’s and beyond. That’s a big field to cover, I know, so each section is probably going to be a bit less detailed than usual in order to make things easier to digest. To begin, we’re starting with:
Harry Potter
I think it goes without saying that the HP fandom is probably the fandom of the 21st century. No book series has become so ubiquitous as HP, and there are still more HP fics on FF.net than from any other fandom. Since HP was published when the internet already existed, most of the fandom’s fics were published online, although a few printed fanzines were created. HP fic is also extremely varied, most likely due to the wide cast of characters and length of time covered by canon lore. You could find fic on anything from coffee shop AUs of the Hogwarts founders to explorations of the main trio’s children when they eventually attended Hogwarts. Like most fandoms with a large internet presence, the HP fandom had its own fic sites, some of which were dedicated to specific attributes like certain ships or tropes, but fic was also posted en masse to multifandom archives like FF.net and AO3. In fact, as of 2017, there are still more Harry Potter fanworks on FF.net than any other fandom.
Twilight
If HP is the fandom of the century, Twilight is probably the fandom of the 2000’s decade. At least in the media, Twifans were portrayed as either feral teenage girls or feral middle-age women, but the fandom is actually much more diverse. In terms of fanfiction, it goes without saying that the most famous fic within the fandom is probably Master of the Universe by Snowqueens Icedragon, more commonly known by its profic title of Fifty Shades of Grey. Snowqueens Icedragon, A.K.A. E.L. James, filed the serial numbers off of her fic and sold it as an original piece of fiction to massive critical attention and success. You can read a bit more about Fifty Shades here.
One Direction
This is the odd fandom out of the bunch, as it’s the only one listed that’s completely focused on real person fic, or RPF. According to FanLore, since there isn’t traditional source material to function as a canon to write fic about, canon in the 1D sense consists of “One Direction's members' original appearance on the reality show, plus their concerts, albums, music videos, video diaries, interviews, books, photo shoots, award ceremonies, other television appearances, band members' and families' personal twitter accounts, media gossip, authorized candid photos and selfies, and unauthorized candid photos by paparazzi and fans.”
RPF already has a bad reputation in fandom spaces, but since 1D is an engineered boy band adored mainly by teenage girls (fandom’s least favorite demographic), the 1D fandom reputation is in the pits (Jamison 2013). Despite this, the fandom is still quite large, and produces a lot of fic, especially on Wattpad, where the fanfic series turned profic After by Anna Todd was published from 2013 to 2014. The most popular ship amongst directioners is Larry Stylinson, or Harry/Louis.
Finally, we have
SuperWhoLock
Behind HP, this is probably the largest fandom on the list, simply because it’s actually three fandoms smushed together: Supernatural, Doctor Who, and BBC’s Sherlock. Fans in this fandom are called SuperWhoLockians. This fandom was especially active on Tumblr in the early 2010’s, and while the main form of fanwork was gifsets, lots of fanfic was produced in each fandom individually as well in crossovers. The most popular Supernatural ships were Castiel/Dean (Destiel) and Wincest (Sam/Dean, who are brothers, hence the portmanteau between Winchester and incest), while Sherlock’s most popular was Sherlock/Watson or Johnlock. Doctor Who is different, as each individual reincarnation of the Doctor is considered a different character, so each Doctor has different pairings, usually with their respective companions or the Master. SuperWhoLock has a reputation for being cringy due to member’s repeated hijacking of Tumblr posts with fandom related GIFs, but now that the fandom is much less active, the cringe has turned into a feeling of nostalgia.
There are so many more fandoms I could talk about, which just goes to show how fandom spaces have only exploded in size as time has passed. Even though these descriptions aren’t the most detailed, I hope you found them informative and interesting!

Hi! You've mentioned a few times that Harry mocked the haka years ago. Do you have any links to that, or could you summarise what you're referring to? Thanks. Also, how and why do you think Wellington was clearly pivotal in 1D's lives?
I'll answer the second question first - and then go into the first. Basically whatever happened in that mediocre bar opposite a parking lot in the early morning of the 23rd of April - the video about it certainly had an impact on their careers - it was the first massive peak in interest about 'Larry' (check out google trends). Both public and fans being aware of the idea of Larry Stylinson had a huge impact on Harry and Louis' life.
One Direction visited New Zealand twice once in 2012 and once in 2013. Both times they only interacted with Māori culture on Pākehā (white New Zealanders terms). On both occasions they were asked both in interviews and in twitter questions to imitate Māori culture. They didn’t know the basics of Māori culture or language and they individually and collectively imitated Māori culture badly for Pākehā entertainment. This is racist, colonising behaviour, which reinforces Māori oppression.
During twitter questions they were often asked to do the Haka. They all attempted it in response to a twitter question in Auckland in 2012 (but not Wellington, because that was a magic perfect night). In Christchurch in 2013, they did it during twitter questions, but not in response to a twitter question - it appears to be because they wanted to. (Harry says that he wants to learn the Haka - but not enough to actually do the learning before performing publicly - and Niall is so enthusiastic that he does it by himself first before the whole arena does it with them). And in their show Auckland they again did it in response to a twitter question. (Niall also did it on a radio interview in response to a question, but that video is no longer on line).
This is a mocking way of engaging in Māori culture and the more you watch the specific examples the more you see how bad it is - they make up gibberish words, as soon as they get past the two lines they remember from TV. They treated Māori culture as something to make fun of - and chose only to engage with Māori culture on Pākehā terms.
For those who struggle to understand why this was mocking - helpfully Ant and Dec put together that demonstrates it quite nicely. In 2013, 1D were interviewed for a pretend New Zealand television show for Ant and Dec's prank show and were asked to pronounce Māori words (something that also happened in New Zealand interviews, although I can't find any of them online any more). It neatly illustrates the underlying racist dynamic.
Now one point to make about all this is that this is a Pākehā New Zealand problem at its root. And obviously I could talk about the ways that Pākehā New Zealanders engage with Māori culture quite a bit. But you don't have to participate in every bit or racism that other people ask you too.
And to sort of set-up what I want to say about Harry - what's really noticeably different this time is that alongside the political action of waving a Tino Rangatiratanga flag - Harry engaged with Māori culture on Māori terms. And that treating Māori culture not as a play thing for Pākehā, but belonging to people who he can meet and talk with - was an important precursor to taking political action.

sometimes i wish i was in the glee fandom back when the show was still on just to witness the fucking insanity but then i remember what it was like to be a larrie in 2015 and then i chill because the larry stylinson brainrot actually permanently changed my brain chemistry so i didn’t need 2013-era klaine to do that to me as well
