I started a piece of art today which is based on some plant species* that I think would be good to colonize Tim in @gunpowder-tim’s headcanon of the Persephone Tim headcanon; so it’s art based on a headcanon of a headcanon of a headcanon 😅 [sweat simle emoji].
It’s gonna take a long time I think, but I am planning on posting it here even though it’s just gonna be plants and no Tim (because I am much better at drawing these little doodle plants than drawing people).
*so the art is basically of real species we have on Earth, but I maintain that they wouldn’t have the same plants on the City, so in my brain his plants are just similar to these ones.
#i don’t know if i should main tag this. thats always hard for me to tell#persephone tim#i am taking a break now because for some reason it took me almost 4 hours to paint some ghost pipe.#i am researching more species too. im looking at a lot of liverworts. but they are ‘obscure’ enougb thats its not always easy to find if-#they are parasitic or not. i know *some* species of liverwort are. and depending on how im able to draw them i might include non-parasitic-#species because i need the space filled a particular way#im also tired because i stayed up until after 6 am and then didn’t take my sleep meds (because it was 6 am)#oh there’s also gonns be some mushrooms included#ive explained it before but basically the fungus being an intermediary is a thing we see in real life (although not between plants and-#animals afaik) and it makes sense because fungi are closer related to animals than to plants.#now i suppose thats not necessarily true on the City. because we dont know if they are homo sapiens or not (this would make possible-#implications for the other life on the plant). however for now I have no hcs regarding that. its easiest to go with their life works the-#same as ours. but their species are different if for no other reason because of evolution (over time)#well thats whats easiest and most interesting and fun *to me* which i realize is because i am a biologist and happen to also crave as much-#scientific accuracy as possible. but thats not everyones cup of tea. not everyone wants to spend hours searching about different parasitic-#plants to choose one for this and learn about how they interact and what not. probably *most* people wouldnt think this hard about it.#and that’s okay too. if you like to make up your own plants whole cloth and not worry about it aligning with realy world biology. thats-#okay too. do what you like.#(unless you are a tv/movie/book/etc which is supposed to be set in our world on our earth. YOU CANT MAKE APE/WORM HYBRIDS! for crissakes)#hope its okay i tagged you gunpowder-tim#also sorry to everyone for how much i ramble in the tags. i have adhd and keeping 1 try of though is nigh on impossible#like this: nigh means near. so nigh on impossible is nearly impossible. but one way of defining nigh is approaching. then its approaching-#impossible. which makes me think of math. ‘as x approaches infinity;’ ‘as y approaches impossible’#there have a little language and math too with your dose of spec bio explanation#(the ape/worm thing is a reference to an early x-files episode that i have complained about in tags before)

So, I've got a very long rant/opinion here and Idk really know how to say this without coming off kinda bad but I'm gonna say it anyways. I agree with the fact that the seventeen tag has been kinda dry lately on most fanfic places, but it's really only in the smut area. It's the sane way with other groups too I feel like. All of the nice little innocent tags are boomin to this day and thats completely fine. I think the smut tag is dry tho bc lately I feel like a few social issues (like sexualizing people and disrespecting them and their identity) have crossed over into kpop and have been ?blown out of proportion? Lately there's been a rampage of people who like to say that writing smut about someone is disgusting and is dehumanizing because people want to assume that it would make the idols uncomfortable which could equate to some morality issues on how you are reducing someone only to their body without their consent and a bunch of stuff like that. It kind of pisses me off bc this is fiction. About grown adults. Clamping down on horny people who simp over hot asian men isn't going to solve the issues we face in real life. I think a shit ton is wrong with the world we currently live in, and deciding to come after something that isn't even real bothers me. Like what does that actually accomplish. But yeah, I think thats a reason why smut has been dying down. I mean, on youtube almost every video about unpopular opinions, or things they dont like about kpop will include something about shipping idols in fanfics. And then everyone in the comment section will talk about how its all fine and dandy in moderation, but once people start writing smut it's crossing the idols personal boundaries. It's something I've been seeing a lot more often and I think people who are interested in writing smut are being turned away from it bc we've gotten to a point where people are being called disgusting for having fantasies.
Hi Anon, thank you for sending in this Ask.
I want to preface this by saying: when I write or talk about Mingyu and Wonwoo fucking on my blog, it is a fantasy. I am not speculating about what the real Mingyu and Wonwoo might be like in bed. I am imagining the versions of Mingyu and Wonwoo that I have created in my head, that exist only in my stories. None of it is real. I understand that this can be a blurry boundary for some people. But for me, the separation between fantasy and reality is well-defined. Now, on to your Ask!
You’ve hit the nail on the head with this one. You’ve also touched on many of the issues I have been struggling with myself as of late. It’s difficult to argue about morals since everyone has a different set of values, as well as different comfort levels. Some people think real person fiction (RPF) is a gross invasion of privacy. Others are fine with it. And others don’t care one way or another. There is no single answer; I can only offer my answer. Which means, of course, people are welcome to disagree with it, or parts of it.
In this essay (LOL But forreal: this is an essay), I will be sharing my experience in the k-pop fanfic community from 2014 to present, the etiquette I personally abide by as a reader and writer of RPF, as well as my stance on RPF in general.
I started reading and posting fanfics back in 2014/2015 on a website called AsianFanfics (AFF). Obviously, no one on that site had a problem with RPF, since AFF is a platform made specifically for sharing stories about Asian celebrities. For many years, I read and enjoyed RPF with zero guilt. I scribbled away by myself in my own corner of fandom and curated my own content. I didn’t interact much with other fans, readers, or writers. I didn’t have a Twitter, and I only used tumblr to reblog memes. As a result, I’ve been able to avoid a lot of anti-shipping discourse, as well as purity and cancel culture. I had no idea there were so many negative opinions about RPF. It wasn’t until I became active on the subreddit r/Fanfiction last year that I learned about all the discourse surrounding RPF.
This newfound ‘awareness’ does make me feel guilty at times—but only because after mulling this over, I still don’t think this is something to feel guilty about.
Here’s what I remember, first and foremost, when I create and consume RPF: fanfics and my favourite ships are fictional, and fiction is fantasy. This is basic etiquette when it comes to RPF, and most people in the k-pop fandom understand this. Delusional fans exist, of course, but they are not representative of the entire k-pop community.
Another point of etiquette is to keep fanfics within fandom spaces. I would never push my fics into celebrities’ faces, or go around claiming that my fanfics are accurate representations of a k-idol’s life or personality, in any way, shape, or form. I would also discourage directing ship-related questions to official accounts, or bringing them up during fansigns or other face-to-face interactions; I believe that in these instances, shipping does have the potential to strain real-life relationships.
So with basic etiquette out of the way, let me share my approach to RPF in general.
As much as we like to think we know our favourite celebrities, we really don’t. All we see is their public persona. And this public persona is intentionally controlled, managed, and curated by a team of people: directors, tabloids, editors, makeup artists, publicists, etc. How “real” are these celebrities? We are so distanced from them that they may as well be fictional.
I draw from the public persona that idols project, and I work them into my own writing. But at the end of the day, these personalities are my own interpretation. My interpretation is probably nothing like an idol’s actual personality. I just use the “public persona/character” that idols portray as inspiration for my own stories, which are set in wildly different universes.
More than anything, I think of k-pop idols as “actors” in my fic. You know how when you write an original novel, you scroll through Google images, looking for the perfect person to portray your original character? RPF is literally that, except you might build upon pre-existing dynamics and personalities.
When it comes to explicit fanfiction, two main concerns are prevalent: one of consent, and one of sexualisation.
If we argue against explicit RPF due to lack of consent, we should be willing to apply the same lens to all explicit works. How do we know that the creator of a movie, book, series, etc., is okay with us using their characters in our stories, explicit or not? We don’t. Perhaps some creators encourage fanfiction, but don’t want their lovingly crafted characters engaging in sexual acts or experiencing trauma. We just don’t know. I feel this line is even more blurred when we talk about characters from movies or TV series.
Let’s take Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, as portrayed by Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan, from the Captain America movies as an example. I am willing to bet that when people consume and create explicit fanfiction about Steve and Bucky, they are imagining Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan in their heads. I doubt many people are imagining the 2D cartoon versions of Steve and Bucky, even though they’re technically the exact same characters. Why? Well, it could be because movies are more readily and easily consumed than comics, and so people are unfamiliar with comic book Steve and Bucky. But it might also be because fans find Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan attractive. Is this really any different from RPF, where fic authors make up everything about a celebrity’s life?
When readers and writers of fanfic talk about how hot Steve Rogers or Bucky Barnes is, those comments are about Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan’s bodies. When reading explicit stories, fans are going to picture Chris and Sebastian’s bodies in their head, doing sexual things. Can we say, “Well, it’s not really you, Chris/Sebastian”, when in a way, it is?
The reality is, people are going to thirst over celebrities, regardless of whether or not explicit fanfiction exists. They’re going to post thirst tweets on Twitter. They’re going to talk to friends and strangers online about how hot [insert celebrity name here] is. They’re going to fantasize about dating and having sex with their favourite celebrity. Or, as it is in my case, they’re going to make up stories in their heads about their favourite idols dating and banging each other. People are going to do all of this without ‘getting consent’ from the celebrity. Cracking down upon and shaming writers of RPF isn’t going to change any of that.
To be honest, I’m not sure why people think it is disgusting to imagine sexual scenarios about real people. It is okay and normal to have these kinds of fantasies. I suppose the alternative is to fantasise about having sex with cartoon characters instead? It’s a very binary way of thinking to say that if you imagine/write real people in explicit scenarios, you are immediately sexualising, dehumanising, or objectifying them. There is more to dehumanisation than writing smut about our favourite celebrities. For one thing, you can love someone and appreciate all parts of them, and still want to fuck their brains out. And generally, fanfics come from a place of love—love that is not only sexual in nature.
Is it the sharing aspect inherent to fanfiction? The possibility that a celebrity might stumble upon explicit works about them? The chances are very low, I think, of the k-pop idols I enjoy writing about coming across my English fics. But I also believe in curating your own content, and that applies to celebrities too. Perhaps a celebrity should not go searching for fanfics about themselves. And of course, people should not show celebrities their fanfics, unless invited.
Another argument I hear against (explicit) RPF is, “How would you feel if someone wrote fanfiction about you?” First off, I don’t like this argument because there’s a difference between someone who decides to be a public figure versus someone who decides to remain a regular private citizen. Celebrities should and do know what they’re getting into when they choose their occupation. (This is not to say, “They are celebrities; sexualise them all you want because that’s what they signed up for.” Here, I am only acknowledging that people might have sexual fantasies about celebrities they are attracted to. Presumably, celebrities are cognizant of this.)
If someone (whose existence I am not even aware of, mind you) decides they want to write explicit fanfiction of me in some tiny corner of the Internet, I wouldn’t care so long as: (1) they don’t shove it into my face, and (2) they don’t harass me and ask invasive questions about my personal life and relationships. It’s not hurting me or negatively affecting my life, so it wouldn’t even register as a blip on my radar. When fanfiction remains within its appropriate spaces, it is largely harmless.
Now, if a k-pop idol were to ask their fans to stop writing fanfiction about them, would I? Yes, I would. However, I can’t imagine that happening. Judging by the number of ‘sexy’ concepts, fanservice moments, and variety shows such as ‘We Got Married’, I am certain that k-pop idols realise they are the stars of many fantasies—some of which are explicit in nature. Considering the prevalence of shipping in the k-pop industry, I would argue that shipping is subtly encouraged.
It’s sad that so many talented writers are shamed out of fandom, or feel that k-pop cannot be the medium through which they tell their stories, or explore their sexuality, or cope with trauma, or simply have fun. Professional works and Hollywood love their RPF—readers and writers of fanfics should be able to, as well.
As you said Anon, “clamping down on horny people who simp over hot asian men isn't going to solve the issues we face in real life” (this is a lovely sentence, by the way). The kind of person who dehumanises another and reduces them to a sexual object will do so some other way, if not via fanfiction. I don’t think the issue of fetishisation can be fixed simply by telling people not to write explicit RPF. In my experience, people who read and write RPF are more respectful and thoughtful about these things than the general public. We’ve all seen the general public say highly sexual things about celebrities in the media and to their faces, or tag celebrities in their thirst tweets. Are these things less invasive than fanfiction? Personally, I don’t think so. And in my opinion, there are more pressing and damaging issues in stan culture than fanfic.
In conclusion, I don’t think there is anything wrong with creating and consuming RPF, both explicit and non-explicit so long as we:
Remember we are writing fiction
Keep RPF within its appropriate space, and
Do not harass celebrities about their personal lives and relationships
RPF is not for everyone. There may be people who enjoy RPF, but draw the line at explicit stories. This is fine. Everyone has their own personal preferences. What is not fine, however, is attacking people for creating things you don’t like. I’m not sure what kind of moral crusade people are on and what they hope to achieve by shaming writers of RPF, explicit or otherwise. Ultimately, fic authors are writing a fantasy. It’s not real; no one is being hurt. I think it’s important for people to curate their own content, and AO3 makes it very easy to filter out explicit works and unwanted tags.
Maybe this is me trying to justify my own participation in explicit RPF—I don’t know. What I do know is that I love k-pop, and fandom is an important part of my media and entertainment experience. I adore the k-pop idols I write about, and I just want to imagine them being happy and getting lots of love and orgasms. Let a bitch be horny, goddamn…
Some bonus fun facts!
At the time I am writing this, on AO3:
26.2% of Stray Kids fanfics are rated M or E
26.3% of Seventeen fanfics are rated M or E
29.0% of Merlin fanfics are rated M or E
34.9% of Captain America (Movies) fanfics are rated M or E
40.1% of BTS fanfics are rated M or E ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Coincidentally, I saw this post on Reddit this morning: Can we have a RPF positivity post?

If you have a problem with Cookie Monster, then I have a problem with you.
Someone recently asked me how I come up with things to write about and post. Well, these posts are bona fide dumps of random thoughts that sneak in when I’m not engaging any part of my brain. I love them because they’re unpolished and exactly how my mind endlessly prattles on in conversation with itself. Truth be told, it’s usually in the shower. And the dumping of these words here is comparable to spring cleaning. It helps to declutter the mind too from time to time.
Last week my Mom and I were talking about the recent decision by Dr. Seuss Enterprises to stop publishing six of their books because of racist and insensitive imagery. For all the people screaming out there – THE COMPANY MADE THIS CHOICE. They were not forced by cancel culture, but rather listened and took feedback from audiences including teachers, academics and specialists in the field as part of a review process. This is called being responsible and allowing for growth through intelligent conversations. The company recognizes that certain depictions of Asians and Black people are hurtful and wrong and have taken steps to acknowledge these facts. They are NOT banning these books and have said they’re committed to listening and learning going forward.
Here is the list of the six book titles and the year they were first published:
- And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street (1937)
- McElligot’s Pool (1947)
- If I Ran the Zoo (1950)
- Scrambled Eggs Super! (1953)
- On Beyond Zebra (1955)
- The Cat’s Quizzer (1976)

Have you ever stumbled upon a journal or something you wrote 10 years ago and it made you cringe? Anyone who says NO to this is probably in possession of some of the worst poetry by their hand, in the world. I know that if I was to release some of the stuff I wrote down from a number of years ago (and in reality, some stuff as recent as 3-4 years ago) I’d be embarrassed by their level of absolute lameness. I write with emotion and unless you’re Tucker Carlson or stunted inside from your head to your toes, you know what it means to evolve. It is what we’re supposed to do, otherwise we are simply stuck in one place forever and I for one can’t think of anything more grotesque than remaining the same.
“You are being presented with a choice: evolve or remain. If you choose to remain unchanged, you will be presented with the same challenges, the same routine, the same storms, the same situations, until you learn from them, until you love yourself enough to say “no more”, until you choose change.
If you choose to evolve, you will connect with the strength within you, you will explore what lies outside the comfort zone, you will awaken to love, you will become, you will be. You have everything you need.
Choose to evolve. Choose love.”
Creig Crippen
It is OK to make mistakes, especially when you don’t know any better. Applying how we have grown as a society to the way we behaved 80 years ago is absurd. We are allowed the opportunity to become better before an angry mob comes along and without discussion wants to rip our character to shreds. There are so many chances for real conversations to promote development that are not happening because people are being so quick to condemn and cancel. Fucking stop it! You’re not a crusader. You’re not the moral authority. You are not the Universe’s gift to man/womankind placed here to draw red circles and X’s on every little thing you deem ‘incorrect’. What you are, I suspect, is empty. And I do not know what it is you’re missing, but you won’t find it in a state of ‘over-wokeness’ and tumbling around looking to smite Cookie Monster for passionately enjoying baked goods.
There have been calls to tear down statues and eradicate movies and people for basically what is THE PAST. If you have an actual working time machine, I suppose you can go back to the set of ‘Dirty Harry’ because apparently:
“The film mocks liberal judges and do-gooders, and the villain claims police brutality, planting the seed that other such charges are fake moves to get sympathy.”
I can’t even with that one.
The removal of statues… ok, I understand this one. But I am not of the mind where these statues should be destroyed and essentially erased from history. I am fully onboard with placing the offending bronzed individuals into a museum with a plaque stating something along the lines of: ‘Once upon a time many of us had some crazy fear-based ideas and poor ethics that marginalized large groups of our fellow human beings and created negative stereotypes resulting in a great deal of hurt. We are trying to be better than those placed before you behind the velvet ropes.’
The past cannot be expunged. But it can be a teaching tool. And in some cases, the past can be used to say – “We still suck, but we’re at least trying to evolve into improved people!”
Sadly, instead, we’re taking down Pepé Le Pew. Let’s not believe women when they come forward with claims of sexual abuse, but let’s ban together and get this cartoon skunk with perceived rapist qualities, cancelled. Bravo. Has Pepé Le Pew been a naughty guy? Well, if you break down his actions through the lens of adults – he is incredibly aggressive and borders on being a pervert. I also suspect he’s a chronic masturbater. I grew up watching Looney Tunes (which should surprise NO ONE) and I never liked that skunk. But not because he was overly persistent in his search for love, rather because he was so obnoxious. Worst character on the show. If anything, the French should be offended because I grew up believing all French people were smelly, forceful jerks.

I am flabbergasted at what we are finding urgent and of significance these days. We allow ourselves to become distracted with the stupidest things; revealing exactly where our priorities are placed. Now do not come at me and accuse me of saying racism is not important. Sit your little crusading ass back down because that is not a thought I’d ever possess. This post is not about racism.
I do not give a flying fuck if you hate Megan Markle, love Megan Markle or think Oprah practices her reactionary facial expressions daily in the mirror, but the fact a pregnant woman went on TV in front of MILLIONS of people and admitted to being suicidal while pregnant with her first child and was met with indifference, ridicule and hate… is fucking disgusting.
The mental health status of a pregnant mother is less important than going after Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street because he is misrepresenting homelessness. Oscar is NOT homeless. He lives in a garbage can and if you knew anything, you’d know that garbage can is spacious and in terms of square footage, it is probably the most expensive home in the neighborhood. See? I can distract with silly things too.
I am going to end all this randomness with a warning…
Tumblr media
Victor Frankenstein created his monster from old body parts and strange chemicals and it was brought to life by a mysterious spark. The monster is large and strong but with the intelligence of a newborn. Victor abandons the monster, leaving him confused and when he tries to integrate himself into society, he is shunned. Seeking revenge on his creator, he kills Victor’s younger brother. Then after Victor destroys his work on the female monster meant to ease the monster’s pain and solitude, the monster murders Victor’s best friend and then his new wife.
Ok, I think it is wonderful that our society is taking inventory of certain items and doing our best to right some wrongs… even though I believe many people are being persnickety assholes. But what has been created recently… let’s call it ‘cancel culture’, where “THEY” (please someone tell me who all the THEY people are because I’d like to know who is this organized) seemingly go in search of people, places and things to ostracise… is starting to create a monster of a backlash. (Again, this is not about race/racism so don’t start chirping about white privilege etc.)
If you listen carefully, you can hear the groaning. And the frustration. This isn’t about going after history or childhood memories and bleaching them clean of inappropriateness by today’s standards, it’s about trying to control what people are allowed to think, feel and speak. And the people are getting annoyed. Just like Frankenstein’s Monster when his grotesque appearance wasn’t accepted by society. And we all know what happened next.

I read the year’s big (biggest?) industrial-comics debut Undiscovered Country, which is the “hotly anticipated” team-up of Scott Snyder (who I’d only read maybe 3 or 4 comics from before since he writes for DC and I don’t read those) and my colleague in the law Charles Soule, Esq. (who I’ve never read before because his books sounded boring). They join a pretty A+ team on the visual side of Guiseppe Camuncoli (who I’ve really liked for years), Daniel Orlandini, Matt Wilson, and also letters from Crank!  Crank! is on the team, guys!  Jason Statham’s heart is going to explode unless he letters this TV pitch masquerading as a comic, and then has sex with the girl from Road Trip somewhere that’s demeaning to her...
Anyways, there’s a comic they could make here, but it’s a TV pitch instead.  There’s a dozen indistinguishable people in this book, none of whom emerge successfully as characters.  All of the pages look kinda like this image, of just people in a room talking to one another instead of... visual storytelling happening... in a comic book?  And then a premise is presented, but the comic’s constantly time-hopping so it doesn’t really unfold in a way that for me felt dramatic or satisfying.  And then it ends on a Brian Vaughan-style one-page splash of a character going “Huh?  Huuuuuuuh?”
That said, there’s a comic here that could’ve been made with this idea, and if they made a TV show I’d watch it, if it was on Netflix, and it was a Korean soap opera called “A Doctor’s Love Song in the Rain.”  It’s a good premise--it’s very much them doing a 60′s post-Trek sci-fi show except updated-- stuff like Lost in Space or Land of the Lost, but set in a post-apocalyptic America.  I like the idea of a show like that-- I liked how big and broad those shows would get, Lost in Space especially.  (I never saw the Time Tunnel).   So, yeah, I guess the comic succeeds in its only noticeable goal-- I’d watch the TV show.
It’s the kind of the comic where the first page is just four panels slowly zooming in on a helicopter...?  Check out another exciting image from these guys with an immense amount of visual storytelling experience:
Tumblr media
Most of the comic is built out of double-page spreads, so if you’re a digital reader, you might want to actively avoid it.  I’m more of a single-page guy, but they use the technique well, I suppose.  Camuncoli’s pages are never confusing for me, though there’s a double-page splash of all the bad guys that I don’t think is successful because they insist on a wide view of things the way a TV camera would, rather than finding a point of view that’s actually dramatic and tells a story, the way a comic book would.  And Wilson does this really gorgeous pink smoke in the book, with a texture on top of it-- I was into how he colored the smoke.  And boy, Jason Statham sure had to put a lot of lettering onto those pages-- those guys sure didn’t team up with someone who’d edit them!  So I mean, Jason Statham got the job done on the lettering-- but of course he did, Jason Statham “swallowed enough microchips and shit them back out again to make a computer.”
They put a McGuffin time-bomb under the premise, to keep the plot motivated, and they give at least one character a clear motivation relating to that time bomb.  They give another character a relationship with her and create some fake-y “mystery” around that character to play out later.  If you’re learning like Screenwriting 101, they’re doing Screenwriting 101 so you could probably find things to appreciate.  You can read this comic alongside Save the Cat or whatever, and good luck with your career. It’s a commercial product and they’re hitting some kind of beat sheet successfully.
Or I can imagine this someday being a kind of fun Sunday afternoon comic to go through a few dozen of, mindlessly-- I suspect it’s pleasures will accrete slowly, but be at least somewhat there for that future Sunday reader, in a way that isn’t true for the first issue on its own, which offers no noticeable pleasure.
But: the most fascinating thing about this comic was the back matter though, a strange celebration of the military-industrial complex.  This comic was apparently inspired by members of the CIA and DARPA...??
The military industrial complex obviously has had a long history of infiltrating and promoting themselves through other artforms (obviously video games; the creation of modern art; I love Michael Bay movies, and I know what I’ve watched, etc.).  And they’ve obviously made overtures in recent years to comics-- Marvel and its relationship with Raytheon.
And I’m... I’m a little more ambivalent about the military and everything than some people online about all that because I’m not kneejerk anti-military, though I mean... the CIA’s a big ask, especially with the world events of this last week.  I’ve had friends who aren’t alive though because they wanted to do something for their country (it’s more complicated than that, how they died but), so I have to always keep that in mind when I talk about that stuff, however much I’m not a huge fan of various foreign policies or stupid fucking wars or our robot death fleet or whatever.  I’m also kinda into just some people getting blown up.  I don’t subscribe to pacificism in all contexts, which is maybe not to my credit, especially given the history of my family and my people generally.
But it’s kind of wild to get a random comic and just see the fingerprints of that so clearly.  Like, they couch it in “oh our wives are friends now” this is a family friend comic, and then immediately pivot to CIA agents and their “incredible acts of service... men and women whose names will forever remain unknown but whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.” ???  Referring to like, the guy who held the hose during the water-boarding?  All the Latin American dictatorships we taught torture techniques to?  Whatever the hell we did in Greece?  (Wikipedia: “Phillips Talbot, the U.S. ambassador in Athens, disapproved of the coup, complaining that it represented "a rape of democracy", to which John M. Maury, the CIA station chief in Athens, answered, "How can you rape a whore?"”).  Like, I’m not as anti-CIA as other people-- there’s bad actors in the world.  But there’s tolerating with some shame a necessary evil, and then there’s doing full-throated advertisements for it in the back of your comics...?
But just setting that aside... comics had an era where it was disregarded and it attracted counterculture people and counterculture thinking.  And that era ended and then we had screenwriters and careerists.  And most of the time I’ve been writing has been during that time of change-- it took me a while to understand that the gears had changed.  And now with all the movies and all the success, it’s like...
Tumblr media
Cool Cool Cool Cool, the drones that swarm the enemy at Pakistani weddings.  Here’s Wikipedia: “The New America Foundation estimates that for the period 2004-2011, the non-militant fatality rate [from drones] was approximately 20%.”
This is the big comic by the big stars, and I mean, that’s a wild paragraph. Are people talking about this???  I haven’t gone and looked-- anytime I go and look, I’m always just... I mean... ooof-- but within the context of comics history... Where is the counterculture in comics now?
I mean, at the same time, Frank Miller was pretty much always a fascist and I loved him as a kid. So maybe I’m overstating things or it’s not significant because I only grew up like 10-15% fascist (it jumps to 30% in certain neighborhoods *glares at La Brea and Melrose ... I hate you Pink’s...*). And not full-blown “I’m going to spend years making a Batman graphic novel, celebrating what a racist loon I am, and then blame it on alcohol” Frank Miller fascist, but...
I just thought that shit was wild as fuck, that’s all....

NAME.     Amos Burton.  (birth name Timothy ‘Timmy” Williams*.) NICKNAME ( S ).     I’m sure people call him plenty of things but not normally to his face (okay that’s not true plenty of them say things to his face but none that are friendly). AGE.     42. SPECIES.     Human.
PERSONAL.
MORALITY.     Skewed.  Amos is extremely protective of children and in some cases, of those that are being victimized / abused but most especially, he will fight to the death (his or someone else’s) to protect someone who he sees as righteous or good.  His natural morality is very flat. He has a basic concept of right and wrong but doesn’t feel, ethically, morally, the weight of his own actions in most cases.  If someone needs their ass kicked then they need their ass kicked.  If someone needs killed, then kill them.  His first inclination is always to commit violence and backtrack later if he has to.  He acknowledges that he does not have a good grasp of what he should do in a lot of situations that revolve around moral decisions, and he gravitates towards people whose judgment he trusts, someone who is good, or at least good-hearted and will look to them to know whether or not he should kill someone (unless there’s just no time in which he almost always will err on the side of protecting his crew / his north star etc.).  He doesn’t overtly cheat or scam people, he won’t pass up the opportunity for a quick buck but in the end he is fine with working his way through life for what he needs (which isn’t much).  He’s very zen in a lot of ways.  Doesn’t need stuff, doesn’t need money, isn’t going to take from someone who needs it and he is self sacrificing in a lot of ways but he’s also going to do everything he can to keep himself alive and in one piece until he isn’t.  He knows death is inevitable, he knows that he’s a tiny cog in the system, and there are those who he would die for if it meant they’d survive, or have a chance at survival they wouldn’t otherwise.
RELIGION.     He doesn’t follow any set religion.  He doesn’t really believe in any single ‘super power’ or ‘super entity’ but he knows common facts and philosophies or whatever religions are around, not enough to argue or debate or quote or anything.  He’d probably be the type that if he met God would just give him / her the bird and tell him to go fuck himself / herself.
SINS.     greed  /  gluttony  /  sloth  /  lust  /  pride  /  envy  /  wrath.
VIRTUES.     chastity  /  charity  /  diligence  /  humility  / kindness  /  patience /  justice.                   italicized meaning i suppose it depends on your pov & his mood.
SECRETS.     Well.  First and foremost his identity is a fake.  When he was (around?) 15 he was working for a mob boss by the name of Amos Burton. (Burton’s legal record was spotless etc.; it was a forged identity that the mob boss used as his legal cover as I believe he himself was an unregistered birth.) When it came time for Amos (actually Timmy at the time) to kill his life long friend Eric (to keep Eric from spilling secrets to the cops because his computer & dna & fingerprints etc. were found at a crime scene and the mob boss didn’t want to risk that information or any other information Eric knew getting compromised) Amos was prepared to do it, until his companion Lydia had a heart to heart about him, about what kind of person that would let Amos turn Timmy into etc.  In the end he knew if he wanted to keep Eric (and himself & Lydia) alive he would have to kill Amos, and so he did, killing a few bodyguards & the boss.  To show his thanks, Eric tweaked Amos’ identity and gave it to Timmy (now our Amos) giving him the chance to actually make something out of his life and hacking the lottery system so that Amos’ identity was ‘randomly’ selected for job training that would get him off world.
PHYSICAL.
BUILD.     scrawny  /  bony  /  slender  / fit / athletic  / curvy  /  herculean  /  pudgy  /  average.
HEIGHT.     5 ft 11″
SCARS  /  BIRTHMARKS.     Honestly more scars than I can probably recount.  He’s always getting stabbed, shot, what have you.  Right lower leg has a scar from a compound break, left shoulder has a gunshot through and through scar, and those are just a couple I can think of on quick recall from the show.  I’ll try and do a more thorough analysis later.
ABILITIES  /  SKILLS.     First and foremost he is extremely skilled in mechanical repair and some engineering skills to maintain space ships, engines, any large machinery in general, whatever machinery those basic knowledge translate to.  He’s decently read, he can draw though it’s not something he spends a lot of time or energy on, he’s a pretty darn good cook when he bothers / has the ingredients he needs and he is versed and capable in extremely advanced mathematics.  He’s also extremely proficient with ranged weaponry, for zero-g and normal gravity and is decent with blades but he usually just goes for whatever’s hand and his fists.  He’s extremely adept at hand to hand / fisticuffs / wrestling whatever you want to call it, even against others trained in physical combat he usually is faster or just flat out stronger.  He can definitely take a beating and keep ticking. Basic knowledge of first aid, enough to maybe keep somebody from bleeding out etc.  Knowledge of explosives for a multitude of purposes including precision explosives for breaking up debris and asteroids etc.  Is extremely, extremely good at reading the room, reading people, seeing through bullshit and false personas and is generally hard to fool outright.  He’s also an extremely learned, non-judgmental  and proficient lover.

Humans Are Weird
(I’m going to call this part 1 because I plan to write more if these posts and I wish to use the same characters, have them sort of link together. So if you like the post, check back for more later!)
(Fandoms, ships, etc.)
Zar'ak didn’t mind the Humans on his ship, they could behave well enough - except for that one male, Tyler, for the most part they did their various duties and treated the crew with respect. Yes they complained from time to time but so far they hadn’t been violent towards the alien members, and they insisted that their violence was all in “good fun” when they fought amongst themselves.
They came from a dangerous wold in the F-Sector and could endure extreme conditions, which made them useful, but also terrifying if he thought about it too hard. Cold wind and heavy snow? No problem, just layer more fabric and fur and they were ready to go. Harsh sun and extreme heat? So long as they had access to water they’d survive, their skin darkened or reddened a bit sometimes, but it didn’t slow them down. They’ve invented a plethora of killing gadgets and machines (none of which were allowed within a hundred meters of the ship), done unthinkable acts to their own species and the other species’ on their planet, but so long as you posed no threat to them or hindered their own personal agendas, they were mostly an agreeable species, he supposed.
If Zar'ak was honest, the thing that bothered him most so far about the Humans was how little he could understand of them. The smallest, most insignificant things could affect them in such large ways, reducing them to small acts of violence, often throwing things they happened to be holding, or breaking down entirely, their eyes leaking. Meanwhile a member of their species could be killed by a Varalian Panther, and if they didn’t know the human well, they usually wouldn’t be anything more than a little upset. Looking at the remains of poor Sophie was more than enough to instil such a fear of the Panther in his heart that he vowed never to set foot o their homeworld again, while the Humans would simply move on. Some even said the Panther was cute.
Zar'ak was constantly, he must admit, spying on the Humans in his crew. He had more than some other ships in the fleet, ten Humans in all. There were four females - Amy, Crystal, Laura and Hannah - and six males - Spencer, Gavin, Ian, Marcus, Jonathan and Tyler, the one the others referred to as “rebelliously difficult.” And he was, Zar'ak would not have missed him if he were to be sent to work for another crew. But here he stayed.
He spent much time following the humans, observing them and keeping notes on what he saw, trying to discern some form of pattern in their behaviour, but he hadn’t been successful thus far, they remained a mystery to him. He hadn’t yet given up though, scared as he was to be caught snooping and eavesdropping, he wasn’t sure such an act would anger the Humans, but he didn’t wish to find out.
Currently he was standing a few feet away from Amy, who appeared to be reading a manual, a weird one, thicker than normal but smaller in width and length. The cover was not at all like a manual, and it had the words “Ignite Me” along the front and spine of the cover. Her face was tense and drawn, as though experiencing some sort of emotional turmoil beyond not being capable of understanding the manual, if that is what it was. He nearly lept out of his scaly skin when she let out a short screech of frustration and slammed the covers closed.
“Human Amy, is something wrong? Your noise sounded distressed, is there something you cannot understand in your manual?” He step forward, not daring to be caught spying when she was in such a state, and instead pretending as though he just happened to show up at that moment.
“ Manual?” She questioned in a calmer voice than her earlier noise had been. “ Oh, you mean the book?” She lifted it slightly, her head tilted to the side.
“Book? What is this book? What does it teach you of?” Zar'ak questioned, preparing to scribble down her explanation.
“Oh, books don’t have to teach you something, some of them are just stories you read for fun.”
“For fun? What is the purpose of reading something that will not educate you?”
“You know, fun. To do something you enjoy for a while? Sometimes you can relate to characters in the stories, that always makes a book better.” She glanced at his hand, which was paused midway through his notes. “Do you guys really not read for fun?”
“To be perfectly honest, Human Amy,” Zar'ak looked down nervously, “I’m not entirely sure what that word means, story. And how it could be enjoyable to read anything that does not further your knowledge of the universe.”
“Oh, okay so you know history books then, right?” At his nod, she continued, “Well stories are kind of like that, events and people and stuff, but none of it is real, none of it has happened or existed.”
“I see…?”
“So we read them for fun, sometimes to distract ourselves, other times to escape into their world.”
“Your story books have portals to other worlds?” He backed a step, unwilling to be near a portal that could release who knows what from who knows where. “That sounds horribly dangerous! Even for your species.” It took Zar'ak by surprise when Amy started laughing, apparently these creatures feared nothing!
“Oh Zar'ak, they aren’t literal worlds, we just read the words on the page and our imagination paints the stories in our head so it’s like being in the world, even though we aren’t.”
“So that screech of distress and/or frustration you made when I found you, did something in your imaginary story world hurt you?”
“No no, I’m just conflicted, I used to ship Juliette and Adam - two of the main characters, but now I kinda want to ship Juliette and Aaron, but she can’t have both and AGH how do I choose?”
“I don’t understand, ships are water or space vehicles, unless you mean to ship the two characters to somewhere else in your imagination?”
“Oh, back home the fandoms use “ship” as another way of saying you want to have those two characters date each other, you know, choose each other as their mate.“
Zar'ak was struggling desperately to keep up with his notes, and none of it made sense. “Fandom?”
“It’s a term we use to describe a fan group of certain books and TV show, or movies. If you are a fan of the book, you’re part of that fandom.”
“I see, I think I understand.” He was nowhere near understanding. “So this failure to ship both, I assume males, with that female character distresses you?”
“Yeah, at first Adam was perfect for her but now I love Aaron so I want Juliette to love him because he needs someone to love him since I can’t.”
Zar'ak paused, looking from his notebook to Amy’s face. “You love a character in a story? An imaginary place that exists only in the book? Despite your statement that none of it is real?”
“Another way of knowing you’re in that fandom, you fall for the characters as if they were real.” She smiled, thinking of her many fictional boyfriends.
“What purpose does it serve? How does your mating drive allow you to fall for this one fake Human?”
“Oh, there’s more than one fake that I love, I’m part of many fandoms. And like reading the books in general, its just something we do, it makes us happy. Sometimes, if the characters we love die, well that always just, Ugh. John Green is horrible for that.”
“ I see,” he mumbled, his brain overloaded with confusion. “ Thank you for your time, Human Amy.” Zar'ak turned and wandered out of the room, more befuddled than before, wondering if there was any hope of getting to understand a species that could read fake history when it gained nothing but “fun” and create populations called fandoms that seemed to revolve around these fake history “stories”. A species that could fall in love with people who never existed.

Does the internet seperate people or connect them? both. 2096. Have you ever written a letter to a soldier? no. 2097. Does pain and fear make you feel alive? eh, i wouldn’t pinpoint it to that. 2098. Are you: good looking? i wish. thin? no. happy? sometimes. successful? no. confident? no. 2099. Are you decisive or wishy washy? in between. 2100. Do you feel pop stars should be morally responsible to set a good example for their fans? it’s nice but they shouldn’t be obliged to. we’re all human.

after having watched the dark tower trailer five (5) times and also read about twelve different articles about it, i am finally composed enough to discuss my Opinions:
okay so first off. i actually really liked it a lot. SHOCKING I KNOW. but i think tbh i’m willing to be pretty easy on this adaptation because, duh, it’s an adaptation. and also they have a perfectly good reason for it to not be a straight adaptation that i won’t go into deeply because it involves Book Spoilers (tl;dr: roland has the horn) so like. i’m learning to live with what it is i guess? because i’m just so thrilled to have this thing i love on screen!!!
i mean, do i think it is a little cheesy and places too much emphasis on action as opposed to the quiet/weird moments that make the dark tower what it is? yeah i sort of do think that. but also that’s how you sell a movie to people who haven’t read an 8-book series that is roughly 4000 pages long. people aren’t coming into this like “oh yes, please give me a surreal western/fantasy/post-apocalyptic post-modern adventure so we can all muse about the nature of love and stories and obsession and healing the brokenness of the world”
well i mean...most people don’t come into movies in that mindset. i do but that’s beside the point
overall the ‘look’ of mid-world isn’t quite what i pictured (no deserts, and it’s quite a bit more forest-y in some parts) but that’s fine. i dig the ruined buildings that are scattered all over the place
also yo is that pennywise shout-out to it supposed to be in mid-world or what??? because like.......what
no joke i actually didn’t catch on to either that or the inexplicable framed photo of the hotel from the shining when i first watched the trailer but TBH i’m into it. i’m into all the ridiculous easter eggs to other stephen king works. i’m glad the people behind this movie seem to be like “yes, we are going to OWN THIS ASPECT”
WHAT are the weird cgi monster beasts??? i’m gonna take a wild guess and say they’re todash monsters that roland has to fight at some point to illustrate the “dangers” of traveling between worlds. (sudden wild guess: this is partly to set up jake traveling to mid world and not returning at the end of the movie)
OKAY CAN WE JUST TALK FOR 0.2 SECONDS ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEY PUT THE WATCH CHIMES FROM FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE OVER THE TRAILER??? G O D. i watched the trailer like “WHAT is that music it sounds so familiar” and then it hit me and i literally screamed
i think i read somewhere that they’re setting jake up to be a breaker and have the shining/the touch/whatever and honestly i think that’s a great story decision. actually i think it’s great they’re bringing these elements from the later books already because it ties everything together! also jake having the shining just makes sense anyways (i think he actually did have it in the books, or at least it was strongly hinted at?)
matthew mcconaughey is chewing the hell out of the scenery for all it’s worth and frankly i am so delighted. HE IS GOING TO BE SUCH A GOOD VILLAIN. (disappointing that they can’t actually call him randall flagg tho bc apparently a different movie studio owns the rights to that character...even though it’s the same character.......oh well)
dear god if they even hint vaguely at anything related to the stand and/or captain trips i will Die right in the middle of the theater
the house on dutch hill looks waaaaay less monstrous and haunted and scary (at least on the outside) but that is also Okay. also i think that big wooden spiky thing you see in the trailer for a split second is supposed to be the doorway demon, which if so, O M G
the portal effects look cool imo. actually most of the effects look pretty cool WHICH IS GOOD considering they apparently didn’t have much of a budget for it? i looooooved that shot of roland loading his guns
oh god what can i even say about idris elba as roland. HE’S GREAT. I AM SO DELIGHTED AND EXCITED. OH MY GOD
god i absolutely flipped a wig when he’s saying the gunslinger’s creed and YOU SEE STEVEN DESCHAIN RIGHT THERE LIKE???? WHAT. ARE THEY GOING TO SHOW FLASHBACKS TO GILEAD’S FALL OR WHAT
maybe it’s going to tie into the wizard and glass tv series they’re (allegedly) making??? OMG
god roland and jake’s dynamic is Everything. roland holding a gun up to jake. “are there guns and bullets in your world?” “you’re gonna like earth. a lot” THAT SHOT OF ROLAND TEACHING JAKE TO SHOOT GOD I AM SHOOK TO ABSOLUTE PIECES
i am so ready for fish-out-of-water roland in nyc god PLEASE. I SAW THOSE PICTURES OF ROLAND DRINKING THE COKE AND I NEED IT RIGHT NOW
frankly i am least pleased by how the tower looks cos i always imagined it to be a lot more...impressive? and castle-like? (also yo where’s the BALCONY haha jk they are never gonna include angry santa claus crimson king in any movie ever.) it just looks like a big black pencil. but i dug the look of the beams (although i hope there’s also appearances of the most subtle manifestations of the beams e.g. the clouds)
it seems like in the movie roland is a lot more disillusioned (like...even more so than in the books) especially when it comes to being a gunslinger (cf. him saying there are no gunslingers anymore) and chasing after/protecting the tower (since it looks like jake is motivating him to do so?) which i am...not sure how i feel about? it’s very different from roland’s book arc obviously. but i have the Very Strong Feeling that the movie’s endpoint (and the hypothetical end point of the franchise) is going to be extremely different from the books’ endpoint, which could require changing the arc up so the ending is...not like the books to say the least
i am really trying not to be super spoilery in my rambling here but like. book readers. hit me up if you want to talk more about this
does jake’s mom actually care about him in this (cf. that shot of the blonde woman hugging him)?? uh.......sure...........okay. unless that’s his nanny?
god i literally can’t stop watching the last 30 seconds of the trailer with the gunslinger’s creed i just BURST INTO TEARS NO LIE
tl;dr is the movie going to be somewhat silly? yes. the books are silly we can’t even argue about this. is the movie also going to fall flat in some respects? i think it’s pretty likely since nothing’s ever going to match up with the “movie” we all imagine in our heads. but tbh i think this route of trying to tell the same story in a new and innovative way is...good?
like, i’m actually NOT going to go in knowing what to expect. or i mean, i will, but i won’t know every single tiny detail. and that’s good! and exciting!
i mean i’m still concerned if they’re going to hit that dark tower “feeling” or “mood” that’s so expressed in the books. and maybe they won’t for much of it (again, i foresee very little musing on love and stories &etc) but like. that part with roland teaching jake the creed? i’m optimistic my dudes
and finally like i said a few days ago: if nothing else this is going to bring SO MANY MORE PEOPLE to these wonderful, ridiculous, occasionally-trashy books that are so near and dear to me. and that’s a good thing regardless of whether the movie succeeds or not.

Indie Vs. ...Not
When news first came out that Milo YouKnowWhoPoulos had been offered a book deal with Simon & Schuster, and various conscientious S&S writers were publicly speaking out—with Roxanne Gay, remarkably, even pulling her forthcoming book from them—I kept thinking one thing: this will never happen to TigerBee’s authors.
The thought wasn’t smug, it was simply persistent, especially after I saw Gay’s poignant “please don’t let it be my publisher” tweet. We can’t offer our authors $250k book deals (yet—maybe in 2018, ha) but we can offer them the peace of mind that their work will be in a catalog permanently free from fascists, neo-Nazis, professional racists, career Islamphobes, etc. While that’s among the faintest praise possible, it’s also, sadly, not a guarantee many mainstream publishers can make.* We’re a small press without a huge budget; we will take whatever marks of distinction we can get.
Then in February, with this confidence/pride still relatively fresh, I was at a party where a poet mentioned to me she regretted publishing her first book with a brand new press because it didn’t get much distribution, and I immediately felt bad. What if the authors we work with feel that one someday, or feel that way now? That would make me so sad. I want our authors to feel served by us; on the semi-rare occasions I try to sell someone on working with us, my solicitation always involves a lot of let me help you. (Use TB as a resource! Tell us what you need! I am your collaborator and cheerleader! I am here for you!) Because that’s how I really feel. And I believe we do the best we can to fulfill that explicit and implicit promise.
With these two ideas in mind, I started thinking of a really basic pro/con list when it comes to trusting an indie press with your writing (or your visual art, or both) as compared to taking it to a mainstream press, and here’s what I came up with. You should know, if you don’t already, that we are still new to publishing, so while I’m sharing everything I can think of, I’m sure there’s more. And if you notice something I’ve overlooked, tell me! Tweet at us, reply to this post, send an email, a Facebook message, whatever. We would love to hear.
MAINSTREAM PUBLISHERS:
have cache, like pledging with a certain sorority/fraternity. People who pay attention to these things are going to have an informed reaction to your book landing at FSG or Little Brown or Simon & Schuster. They’re going to presume things about the work (and you) without having read the book, possibly before the book even exists, like how literary it is, how sellable it is, etc. They’re going to be impressed, or they’re going to be snide, or they’ll just be happy for you. Likewise, the acquisition might make you feel extra good, or you might feel disappointed. You might feel insecure because it’s not as elite an association as you wanted, or you might feel good and insecure, as in: holy shit I can’t believe this publisher wanted me, now I have to make sure the book is really good and a bestseller and gets no bad reviews, etc. Or so I’ve heard + seen from my friends. I’m pretty much clueless when it comes to the reputation of imprints, like which one is supposed to be for respected esoteric geniuses who never make money, and which is known for pop psychology/science titles, and so on. It’s all a big question mark to me. But to plenty of other people, it’s important, or at least relevant. Of course, to even more people, it’s not.
have money, some of which they might give to you. At the risk of stating the obvious, even very large and very rich publishers buy books for tiny sums. But I find it nearly inconceivable that an indie press has ever given a six figure advance or even a high five figure one. (Though I could be wrong, and if you know of some exceptions, please tell me who/when/what book!) If you have your heart set on a massive advance, you’ll probably find it hard to get excited about any small publisher. Because $$$$$$$. I get it.
have excellent distribution. I am in awe of the seamless, colossal endeavor that is book distribution for mainstream publishers. It’s like magic to me, and there’s so much more I could say about it but it would probably bore you so I’m just going to leave it at: if someone wants to order your book from a Barnes & Noble branch and you’re with a large publisher, B&N can probably do that with no problem. Of course, it’s baffling to me that someone would order a book from a big box bookstore instead of requesting it from an indie bookstore or just using Amazon, but I digress.
(They'll take care of foreign distribution, too, probably.) This is, like, something we cannot even begin to think about right now. Though we do fulfill lots of international orders on our website.
have ~connections~. Big publishing houses are well-positioned to get you press in the form of TV interviews, book reviews, readings, etc, though—and more on this in a minute—it’s not a guarantee they’ll use their resources wisely, or at all.
I think those are the highlights. Now for the home team:
SMALL/INDIE PRESSES:
give a shit. How can they not? They’re definitely not in it for the money, which does not exist, or the glory (because, ditto.) They’re doing it because they really love poetry/experimental fiction/brilliant nonfiction/etc. and want the world to have more of it. I’m not implying people in mainstream publishing don’t feel the same way, because I know some do. But obviously the “culture” is different, and the intimacy is different, the familiarity and sense of investment is different, because with a small press, you’re dealing with a much smaller group of people and it’s hard to evade responsibility if you’re one of ten, one of five, or one of two people who constitute the whole enterprise. In that vein, an indie publisher....
can (probably) give you more time and attention. A big publishing house takes on a lot of projects and runs them through a lot of people. This is great when it comes to say, copyediting (aka the bane of my entire existence from now until eternity, my god I hate it so much,) but not so good when it comes to, say, promotion, when you’re trying to have a conversation with people about how your book should be sold and those people probably haven’t even read your book. (That’s a link to one of my all-time favorite essays, “Into The Woods” by Emily Gould, and if you have even a little bit of interest in writing as a career, you should read the whole thing more than once, more than twice, even, although you may stop short of reading it the 20 times that I likely have.)
have less reach but more close connections. Over the past two years, between dropping off copies of Prostitute Laundry and arranging Bad Advice readings, I’ve gotten to know staff members at so many independent bookstores, and—shockingly—that includes bookstores outside of New York. It’s been a great pleasure because not only are these people fun to know in their own rights, but it also fosters a sense of community and keeps me from feeling like I’m sending emails and books into an uncaring void. As a result of those connections, I suspect, not only have the booksellers agreed to stock future TigerBee titles in the first place, but they often give those titles prominent placement, which makes a huge difference for in-store sales. (I say I suspect because who knows, maybe me always showing my face around these places exhausts the folks who work there, but the TigerBee books are just that good that they have to be kept on display tables and end caps.)
by which I mean: Friends who’ve published with mainstream presses have told me (what I receive as) horror stories about them not being encouraged to do readings or a proper tour, having their book(s) routinely shelved in the wrong sections, billed as something they’re not, and otherwise mismanaged. Everyone makes mistakes, and it’s not as if everyone at an indie press is guaranteed to be spectacular at their job, but I’d guess most of them at least understand the importance of clear and accurate presentation and communication, especially in brick and mortar spaces.
have some cache, too. An indie publisher is still a publisher, and so it sounds better and is more legitimizing to go with a small press than to have no titles to your name, or to be self-published. (Obviously I didn’t really care about the taint of self-publishing, and I don’t think you need to either, or that anyone does, but there’s no denying it, it *is* nice to feel legitimized.) There’s also something impossibly alluring about a limited edition book that feels sort of secret. Who wouldn’t want bragging rights that they’ve got a first edition or the only edition of a chapbook by someone who goes on to be widely recognized as the genius they always were? It’s badass when you (meaning, I,) click on the first book by someone who’s a bigger deal now than they were then, and see that it’s sold out. It’s so maddening! I want that book! But everyone involved seems about 10 points cooler than they did when I thought the book was still available.**
let you own your masters. I can’t speak for other small publishers, but our contracts are extremely generous to authors while remaining fair to us (i.e., giving us a chance to recoup some of the costs associated with the project.) We have exclusive rights for a period but then it all reverts to you, which means you can put it in an anthology, resell it, make a TV show about it, whatever, and you won’t have to pay or consult us. As a writer, I find this state of affairs really exciting. I love knowing that no one is going to get the rights to turn Prostitute Laundry into a movie unless I trust them with those rights. (And not only do I alone make the decision, I alone get paid. Sweet.)
don’t require that you have an agent. If you’ve got an agent, we are happy to work with them. But we don’t require that manuscripts be sent to us by an agent, so it’s one less thing for you to worry about if you don’t already have one. (Though by all means, please, if it gets to that point: have someone knowledgable look at our contract with you before you sign.)
gives you lots of control. I hear a lot about how writers are supposed to be divas and sometimes I see it, for sure, but I see a lot more writers being really, really nervous to voice their concerns or opinions on their books’ presentation, by which I mean the title, the cover, the marketing, etc. I have friends who’ve sucked up crappy titles assigned by their mainstream publisher in the hope that they’ll feel entitled to more leeway when they’re negotiating cover designs, or vice versa, and friends who feel like they can’t tell the truth about any of it (all of which they hate.) I’ve also seen a lot of hideous covers, like inexcusably hideous, as possibilities and as final decisions—I’m sure you’ve seen them, too. (Our nation’s ugly cover crisis is a topic for another time, like when xanax is on hand.) We have great taste, so all our products will always look beautiful, but we also care very, very much about making sure our creators are happy, so we will solicit your approval again and again at various stages of the process. Perhaps even too much!
Sooooo, I don't know—was that useful? Clarifying? I really want every creator to end up at the place that fits them the best, whether that’s us or the biggest publisher on the planet, or a tumblr, or twitter, no publisher at all. And if you’re thinking about going with a small press but we seem too small or new for you, Birds LLC and Coffeehouse are two indie publishers I admire and respect very much, and there are tons of other worthy ones. Research, think about it, talk with friends about. I hope you find the fit that’s right for you because if you put care into your work, your work deserves it.
—Charlotte
*Lest some pedantic person come along and be like, “what about Mein Kampf, isn’t there a responsibility to keep repugnant historical texts in print so we can learn from the past, etc. etc.”: yes, I get it, duh. That’s obviously not what I’m pointing at here. I’m referring to publishing *new* repugnant works without historical significance and furthermore, I don’t see us taking on the task of printing things that are public domain and/or part of deceased fascist author’s estate anyway, so the odds of this specific scenario presenting itself to us seem low.
**I want your book to sell and sell and sell, and be available to everyone who would benefit from reading it, and I think it’s my job as a publisher to accurately judge existing interest and further whip up an audience, so I will always strive to do that well. But still: unattainability is hot, with people and with objects. Just ask any luxury brand that lives and dies by their artificial scarcity.

Q&A 101: Everything You Should Never Ask Talent After Watching a Movie
New Post has been published on https://funnythingshere.xyz/qa-101-everything-you-should-never-ask-talent-after-watching-a-movie/
Q&A 101: Everything You Should Never Ask Talent After Watching a Movie
Let’s cut to the chase: Most post-screening Q&A sessions are terrible. It’s not one person’s fault, but usually just a byproduct of the circumstances. Moments after watching a movie, audiences get the chance to engage with the people that made it, in a public environment with no obvious filter. In some cases, a Q&A might include insightful observations, but it can go wrong in many ways. On the opening weekend of the Tribeca Film Festival, one Q&A was derailed by an offensive question aimed at Michelle Pfieffer by the moderator himself; in another case, following a screening of “Westworld,” an obsequious audience member droned on so long he used up all the time.
Some blunders are understandable: Often, the people asking the questions have no professional obligations or even an understanding of why real-life talent is suddenly standing in front of them. For many audience members, merely having close proximity to a filmmaker or actor feels like a special interactive privilege, but that doesn’t mean it also requires some responsibility. Here, we present some etiquette guidelines that every Q&A participant should keep in mind, lest you incur the wrath of an angry audience.
“This is More of a Comment Than a Question…”
The worst cliché of all Q&A sessions. This is not a town hall session; it’s an opportunity to ask about the work at hand, not to sound off about it. Save it for your friends in the lobby. In many cases, this remark sets the stage for an opinion about the movie, or the talent involved, both of which are fair game for pontification in a different context. But remember the Q part of the Q&A equation. It’s designed to be a two-way street. Your comment is a roadblock. —EK

“I Have a Two-Part Question…”
Nope. One question per person. If the audience is cautious about raising hands, feel free to circle back with a second question later on. Generally speaking, however, the two-pronged approach is problematic for, well, two reasons: 1.) You assume that both questions have equal weight, when in fact the Q&A process is egalitarian unless the moderator stipulates otherwise. 2.) You’re making the object of your question do extra work that could lead to confusion, slow things down, and muddle up the process. In almost every occasion, this will lead to someone answering a question, then pausing, furrowing their brow, and forgetting the second part. Save them the trouble. —EK
Keep It Brief
Think about it: You’re not the only person in the room. There’s no better way to demolish that important sentiment than to eat up valuable time asking a long, rambling question (or, worse, issuing a long, rambling comment) that puts both the audience and the talent at the mercy of whatever the hell you’re asking about. Beyond that, keeping things succinct also means that the person you’re actually asking is more likely to answer what you’re actually answering, not some off-shoot tangent that you sputtered out while trying to get to the meat of your ask. —KE
“Will You Read My Screenplay?”
Yes, breaking in as a screenwriter is a hustle, but you are making a grave misstep using a post-screening Q&A to pitch your script. If you have something great that is going undiscovered you need to find a way to talk it, or yourself, in a way that makes people want to read it. By standing up at a Q&A you are making yourself look desperate, untethered and the exact opposite of someone who wrote something people should read as you create a cringe-worthy moment that sucks all the oxygen out of a theater. Also, there’s an infrastructure to this process — agents, managers, etc. — for a reason. Most people aren’t even allowed to advise on screenplays without some input from their teams first. —CO
“How Much Did You Improvise?”
For heaven’s sake, certainly don’t ask this question if the screenwriter is within spitting distance. What this question usually means is that the movie felt so naturalistic, so funny, full of characters so alive and flawed that you feel as if you know them. If that is the case, it’s probably because the people making it wanted you to feel that way and are good at their jobs. It’s also a bad question because it really only has two answers: Yes or no. If yes, the creative person may at best be able to share one scene or off-the-cuff line that made it in, it probably won’t be the one you were thinking it would be, and you’ll be able to say, “Huh.” In most cases, the answer will be, “Actually, none of it was improvised. So-and-so is just that good.” And then you’ve wasted a question. —JD
“What Advice Do You Have for a Struggling Actor/Screenwriter/Director?”
A Q&A session for “Ender’s Game”
Jon Furniss/Invision/AP/REX/Shutterstock
Yes, the talent at hand probably does have a whole cache of sterling tidbits to dole out to eager listeners, but so often when these kinds of questions are asked at Q&As, it’s not a genuine request for help, but a sly way of letting on that you also have your own showbiz dreams and you’re just hoping for some recognition. It’s the more low-key version of “Will you read my screenplay?” couched in what initially might seem like a valid request. Have an actual question about something you’re struggling with in your work? Get specific, and tailor your question to the talent and their own experiences. Writing an adaptation? Ask a screenwriter who did a successful adapted script for one tip. Want to break into acting? Ask a star if there’s a book you should read or a particular performance that served as a guide. —KE
Confused About the Ending?
Here’s the thing about ambiguous endings: They’re meant to be ambiguous. This has puzzled Q&A attendees for as long as filmmakers have been subjecting themselves to the collective insanity of their audience, and is among the more uncomfortable questions a writer/director can be asked. It’s natural to want closure to a story, but if a movie’s ending leaves you with unanswered questions, it may be best to leave them unanswered. —MN
No, You May Not Have a Selfie
How is that even supposed to go? You hop up onstage, scramble over, crouch next to the person, and the rest of the audience gives you silent death stares for the rest of the night? Is that really the impression you want to make? These people are at work; they’re here to discuss their craft. Asking for a photo wastes everyone’s time, and the results probably won’t be worth the risk of an angry mob. —JD
Never Ask a Question That Google Can Answer
This one — like many of these Q&A guidelines — should be self-evident, and yet it seems like people still need to be reminded that post-screening chats are short, time is precious, and everyone has access to the entire wealth of the world’s information in their pocket. You have the artists sitting there in front of you, so don’t ask something that a machine could tell you in the time it takes to pull up a Wikipedia page! Ask subjective questions, not objective ones. Two big no-no’s: What camera did you use? And what was your budget? (If the answers aren’t online, maybe there’s a reason for that.) Q&As are often a waste of time, but they can be very special if the people in the crowd actually recognize how rare it is to be able to reach through the screen and speak to the people behind the movies. —DE

Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would like to thank @leaalda for making these amazing banners.
This is an effort to spread the word about all fan fiction writers in our little fandom. If you would like to be featured or nominate a writer, please contact me. Please reblog this post if you can and check out some of @cheryllclayton work!
1. First things first, if someone wanted to read your stories where can they find them.
On Tumblr under @cheryllclayton and on AO3 under Cherlynne
2. Tell us a little about yourself.
I live in Canada, I am 34, a wife and a mother of 3 boys.
3. What do you never leave home without?
Purse or cell phone
4. Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Definitely a night owl
5. If you could live in any fictional world which one would you choose and why?
Probably the wizarding world of Harry Potter.  It’s one of my favorite books/movies and I love everything about their world (minus Voldemort that is ☺).
6. Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met.
I wish I could say it was some huge star but unfortunately there isn’t many hugely famous people residing around me…..so I’d have to say Corb Lund & Ian Tyson??  Donny Parenteau (Canadian Musician), Kelly Taylor (Canadian Comedian)
7. What are some of your favorite movies/TV?
Oh boy, this is a hard one…I am a total TV & Movie freak so there’s sooo many! I’ll list a few of each but keep in mind the list goes on and on lol.
TV:  Riverdale, iZombie, Shadowhunters, Veronica Mars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Criminal Minds, The Ranch, Big Bang Theory, The Voice, Pretty Little Liars, Vampire Diaries, Jane the Virgin, The 100, etc, etc, etc lol
Movies:  Harry Potter’s of course, anything Marvel pretty much, Lethal Weapon’s, Beverly Hills Cop’s, While You Were Sleeping, Sweet Home Alabama, The Wedding Planner, The Princess Diaries movies, and I’m sure there’s tons I am forgetting….so many comedy’s, action and romance ☺
8. What are some of your favorite bands/musicians?
Ummm, That’s hard too, I have such a wide taste in everything that it makes it hard to narrow them down lol.  A few of my fav’s are Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Alan Jackson, CCR, Garth Brooks, Adele, Maroon 5, even the Biebs lol
9. Favorite Books?
Again Harry Potter’s, the Vampire Academy books, The Last Vampire series, The Woman of the Otherworld series, Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series, anything written by Nora Roberts, Linda Howard or Christie Craig.  I also used to really enjoy RL Stine and Christopher Pike when I was younger.
10. Favorite Food?
Chinese, perogies and almost all versions of pasta lol
11. Biggest pet peeve?
Bad drivers….people who chew with their mouth open….ignorant people….crumbs on counter tops lol
12. What did you want to be when you were little? What do you want to be now?
A teacher and I’m 34 so already in a career but I think if I could do it again I would maybe be a Radiologist or something to do with Crime Investigation
13. What are your biggest fears? Do you have any strange fears?
Dying is a huge one lol and I get claustrophobic but my main fears are spiders and tornados
14. When you are on your deathbed what would be the one you’d regret not doing?
Maybe not travelling enough….
Okay… lets talk about your writing!
15. Which is your favorite of the fics you've written for the Bughead fandom?
Well I have so far only written one call Sometimes It’s Not What It Seems, which isn’t your typical ”Bughead” fic, the main relationship currently is FP & Betty (I know, SHOCKER).  It started out being a Bughead fic but these two characters just seem to write themselves.  As far as if Bughead is endgame in this fic....who knows ;).  I am a total Bughead shipper, don’t get me wrong but let’s admit it, Skeet/FP is Hot!  So I decided to take on the story no one was telling.
16. Which was the hardest to write, in terms of plot?
I think just where to take things, I usually start with an idea of how the chapter will go and it changes from there, also trying to stick to the timeline I set out in chapter one…wasn’t thinking ahead there lol
17. How do you come up with the ideas for you fic(s)? Do you people watch? Listen to music? Get inspired by TV/movies?
This one just came to me, I have read, I don’t even know how many Bughead fics on Tumblr and AO3 and it was a concept no one had tackled yet that I could see and this story just wove it’s way in my mind to the point where I had to put it down to get it out of my head.  This is my first fic I have ever written and it was originally supposed to be a one shot but here I am almost 7 chapters in…
18. Idea that you always wanted to write but could never make work?
Well, since I’ve only done one fic so far I can’t answer that lol
19. Least favorite plot point/chapter/moment you’ve written?
The break up between Jug and Betty is always hard but I don’t know if I would say I didn’t like it.
20. Favorite plot point/chapter/moment you’ve written?
Probably chapters 4 to 6, there are so many moments I am happy with in those but one of my favorites is the bar scene on karaoke night ☺
21.Favorite character to write?
I really like writing FP but I also have a lot of fun writing the other Serpents
22. Favorite line or lines of dialogue that you've written?
Probably the deeper conversations between FP & Betty, I really like their banter in my current chapter I’m working on
23. Best comment/review you’ve ever received?
Well I’ve received a lot of good reviews and some not so good ones lol, apparently the Bughead fandom is strong and doesn’t like when you mess with it lol.  The concept of Betty & FP is definitely a hard one to grasp for a lot of people, especially the younger readers I think but I like to think the writing is good and that I am doing the growth of the relationship justice.  My favorite comments have probably been ones on how good the writing is or that I should just write a book lol and I also love it when people comment that they now ship FP & Betty, even if it’s just in my story.  That shows that I am doing something right I think.
24. How do you handle bad reviews or comments?
Sometimes I comment, most the time I don’t as I don’t like to let things get to me, plus I am not one to argue online.  If I do comment I usually just thank them for reading and for their opinion and answer any questions they may have asked.  If they are really rude I just delete them.  Like I said above, there are some hard core shippers out there and I knew there would be some backlash on this risky paring.
25. If you could change anything in any of your stories, what would it be?
The timeline, I set it in the first chapter and I am now finding it really hard to stick to since my characters are just running away with themselves lol
26. What is your favorite story you’ve ever written? Any fandom?
So far this one…as it’s my only one.  However I did write poetry and short stories when I was young, I even had a few poems published.
27. What are you reading right now? Both fan fiction and general fiction?
Currently reading anything in the Bughead fan fiction.  I am also currently reading a Linda Howard book.
28. Do you have an advice for writers that want to get into this fandom but might be scared?
I would say that if you want to do it, just do it.  If you love it then write it, don’t worry about any of the haters out there or what people might think.  I took a huge risk breaking the Bughead pairing with my first fic but it was something ‘I’ wanted to see.  Even some don’t like your story, you were brave to just put it out there, definitely braver than the keyboard warriors sending the bad comments who would never think to put themselves out there.  Writing is personal, remember that you are ultimately writing for you, as long as you are happy with it and you enjoy doing it then it really doesn’t matter what the rest of the readers think (unless of course you want to sell it lol).  I have a few dedicated readers to my story, definitely not a huge amount but as long as I am having fun writing it and they want to keep reading it then I will keep going ☺.
