what do you think anout the theory that spamton saw the real world and not the light world?
i think, whether or not spamton saw our world as well, it's pretty explicit, narratively tight, thematic, AND important that the blinding light spamton saw was indeed the light world!
i do think there are cases wherein darkners are juggling both at once, and i think you could easily apply that to spamton too. when writing, for example, i use the theory that spamton and jevil were initially meant to be player guides like ralsei, who appears aware of both higher realities in the game itself as well as in my interpretation of him.
Tumblr media
(for posterity's sake, queen mentions pressing buttons a couple of times too, but that's because of a running gag with the controls of the car and robots she and kris pilot, not because she's overtly meta aware.)
but i think it's important to remember just how the light world slots into spamton's deal, both thematically and mechanically. on the mechanical end, we have the way he saw it at all; the shadow crystals. we get to see how they look from the dark world for ourselves, and this isn't just for show. we're getting to see what spamton saw, too.
Tumblr media
to us, it may look ordinary. but to the darkners, that world is a blinding light. the light world is a terrifying place with an incredible power (which i'll touch on in just a moment as well), a place where the darkners are literally objects. seeing their worldstate literalized like that is mindbending – not only are they darkners made to serve a higher reality, they exist as nothing but objects to ordinary people in that reality. and objects aren't granted any autonomy, no matter how autonomous they might imagine themselves to be. they're not just computer (darkner type), they're Literally a computer being used by a person the same way spamton might drive a car or swatch might organize the plates in their cafe. seeing that is not only eldritch, but it's also got an element of realizing just how binding fate is baked in there too. it's seeing the strings of fate in their most distilled state. seeing the click of a mouse that guides swatch to bring the neo body into reality. seeing the searches typed directly onto queen's keys. seeing the bright, clear line that delineates all of it.
Tumblr media
i've touched on how spamton parses this (because he's a grindset guy at heart, someone who doesn't necessarily question the system) in some other posts, which you can check out here and here and here.
but this brings us into the thematic element. deltarune uses religious imagery quite often, especially in reference to higher realities, and we can see that and the aforementioned strings of fate coming into play with neo. neo is something i talk about a lot in my swatchton meta because i feel it is crucial to understanding who spamton is as a character.
and the neo body is a vector of god – literally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(see also; the dialogue of seam discussing the shadow crystal from earlier.)
and this is why spamton describes it the way he does, why he wants it so badly. it's powerful – made by a lightner. (he wants a perfect body he wants a perfect soul, you know the song.) the lightners have the power to determine the fate of the darkners, and so too does neo have an incredible power itself. could it grant spamton the power to determine his own fate?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
well, not quite. it's still a part of this world, after all – there's no escaping the strings. no one can choose who they are in this world, and trying to game the system still leaves you smack dab in the middle of it.
there's a common thought that, because of the wall in spamton's shop, spamton must've seen the light of the sun. i think, if he did see both worlds, it's possible! but it seems more likely that either he didn't see the sun at all and was burned by the light that is the light world; the weird layout of the light world wasn't considered while making this choice (because there are so many rooms with impossible windows in the light world, particularly the school); and/or, more likely and most thematically,
Tumblr media
he saw a beautiful blue sky more like this one. after all, the library might not have windows, but it does have windows.

“Solving” the “Mystery” of “Chair”
Tumblr media
This chair from the sweepstakes website (henceforth referred to as "Chair") has been subject to a decent amount of confusion and fairly mild amount of discussion since its introduction. Its heavily Gaster-adjacent page titles, shadow-y blob form, and random Spamton jumpscare have remained largely unexplainable considering it's only been about a week or so since this page showed up and any part of the game "Chair" appears in has not released yet and will not for at least several months.
Or has it?
Tumblr media
Noted scholar "poop mcfarten", among a few other persons, has claimed this chair is the same one that is located in Rudy's hospital room throughout Chapters 1 and 2. This revelation would close the book on "Chair", as the most obvious solution is that this is the chair from Rudy's hospital room and he's going to die because the chair turned into Shadow Forme and attacked him at his most vulnerable moment (while he was already dying for non-chair-related reasons)
However, things are not so simple in the world of "Chair".
By using inspect element to get at its image file without accidentally saving "eyes.png" again, we can see "Chair" without its black background and at its original scale (as it is displayed larger on the website) Now it is possible to compare it directly to a rip of the chair sprite in Rudy's hospital room. (Note that the chair in Rudy's room is actually part of the same sprite as the rest of the tiles in that room and has been edited out of its surroundings here for clarity, however rest assured I am confident that I was able to tell a chair apart from the floor it was on)
Tumblr media
Looking at these chairs side by side, a host of discrepancies arise. "Chair" is slightly larger, at a different angle, its seat is thicker suggesting possible upholstery, its legs are much darker in color in a way different lighting is unlikely to accomplish, and the most damning evidence against it being the same chair: It has those little things sticking out of the top of the back, previously largely obscured by the dark background. (I don't know what the things are actually called.) This is clearly a different chair.
It also cannot be the chair from town hall, though town hall chair makes a slightly stronger argument with its similarly thick upholstery and darker legs. It’s still missing the things on the back and is actually evidently too big to be “Chair”, the opposite of one of hospital chair’s issues, so despite its best efforts it’s out of the running.
Tumblr media
But is “Chair”, as others have suggested, secretly notable other blue chair from a Toby Fox game Chairiel?
Tumblr media
The answer is: Still no! There have been two Chairiels throughout history. The one in Undertale is a blue chair, however it looks even more different from “Chair” than the hospital chair does. And the chair that the Chairiel torch would be passed to in Deltarune obviously looks the least like “Chair” out of any options, not even fulfilling the basic requirements of being blue and having visible legs.
And so, as this obnoxiously long post about chairs reaches critical mass, I must conclude that “Chair” is an entirely new, unique chair that we have not been introduced to yet.
Which probably does not actually matter at all.

Note
Since Deltarune has a reference to "The God of Hyperdeath" (If Kris inspects the computer in their room, there is a "poorly-drawn design for a game" that features a "last boss" with a "creature with giant rainbow wings.") do you think we'll see a reference to "The Demon that comes when you call it's name"?
Maybe it's a drawing Kris made when they were a kid.
well Kris making it wouldn't make as much sense as Azzy making a hyperdeath thing, since Kris is an entirely unrelated person,
i tend to think if Chara is involved at all it's as the one who yeeted the vessel, so they're presumably hanging out in the meta with gaster rather than directly around. so like. who knows what they could reference directly

So I started thinking about the game on Asriel's computer, and now I can't stop thinking about the possibility of Asriel and/or Kris being the ones to create Undertale. I mean, if Gaster might have created Deltarune, why couldn't they have made Undertale?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, its clearly supposed to be a reference to the Asriel fight, but I started questioning if there might be more to it, and here I am.
They way this has been piecing together in my brain, I see it as more Kris picking up what Asriel started and never finished some time after the events of Deltarune, with every intention of having it played by the same entity that controlled them.
All of the similarities between the games can easily be things that were based of their actual adventures and people from Hometown. What I'm interested in are the major differences.
- Most of the magic used by monsters could be based on what little magic they can use in the Light World, as well as magic used by both Lightners and Darkners in Dark Worlds.
- Frisk and Chara being so similar to Kris makes perfect sense if they were inspired by them. They both share a ton of traits with Kris, but Chara seems to have the most. Frisk is the player character based on their experience while under the player's control, and Chara is the self-insert that fills their role in the Dreemurr family, but is also one of two characters in the game who directly speak to you as the player.
- Gaster and all his mysteries could be based on whatever entity we've been assuming IS Gaster in Deltarune. They never fully found out what was going on there, but they knew putting in references to it would drive the curious players insane.
There's something about the idea of Kris creating Undertale because of the events with the player in Deltarune, only for most of us to find Deltarune in the first place because of Undertale.
The one major part of this theory is how Asriel is depicted in Undertale. I guess it could be explained as Asriel's edgy OC from when he was working on it getting reworked for the story, but that might be stretching it a bit.
Do I think any of this is even close to canon? Not for a second. Pure crack theory. But I can't stop thinking about it and it makes a concerning amount of sense. There are a bunch of other smaller things I can think of that could be looped in, but these are most of the main ones. I don't like how deeply this has infected my brain.

I'm watching Chuggaaconroy's LP of Earthbound again, and It's making me think about things related to Undertale/Deltarune. I'll never think that d.ogg is actually a reference to any motif. It's just a short menacing loop. But I can't help but wonder if Toby was going for it to feel like the empty soundstone at all? I always thought it was spooky, at least. Less menacing but you get my point I hope.
youtube
I've also been thinking about the 7th Your Sanctuary(end of ep50, start of ep51), and how it directly disconnects us from Ness being a player surrogate. How cool that moment must of felt for Toby to make that the Big Reveal of His Game. He wrote the entire game barely hinting at it at all by playing on our preconceived notions, but the few hints that are there stick out like a sore thumb once you know. Also thinking about how nothing is original. How even things predictable, can be made beautiful by the journey there. Like in Mother 3, [OMEGA SPOILERS BTW] it's revealed that Claus, your brother, is The Nefarious Masked Man. You'll often see the "I'm actually your Father!/Relative!/Etc!" Literally used as a joke in cartoons because of how commonly it's used, but I've also never heard anyone deride Mother 3 for that reveal. I wonder how many people will be unhappy with Deltarune if it plays out in a predictable way, directly calling back to whatever Toby's favorite parts of Mother 3 would be for the big reveal? Or is the love big enough for the dedicated fan base to only ever love it? Does any of that even matter, when the journey is going to be great anyways?

Alright, so the way I see it right now the Dark Worlds run on “Neverending Story Logic”, they’re created when Dark Fountains are opened, but they are created already with full history and memories for everyone inside them as if they alwas existed. But here’s another important element I want to touch on...
How does this work with the mysterious entity that keeps driving people mad and creating Secret Bosses?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, this feels a bit too Ominous to just be a retroactively-existing backstory element, right?
And, I think... I think one of the reasons why this is so Ominous is because this is kinda goes against the rules of how Dark Worlds are supposed to work?? Like, whoever or whatever this ‘someone’ is, they are something very Not Normal and this is partially demonstrated by the screwy way they interact with the Dark Worlds.
(Also for the sake of clarity, I will be referring to this unknown entity as Someone with a capital ‘S’ for the reminder of this post. I would also be making some references to the very popular theory that Someone is actually Dr. W. D. Gaster, but I will only be using his name when directly talking about aspects of my theory/interpetations that factor in the idea that Someone is Gaster)
I think that Someone might be able to, like, ‘infect’ newly-created Dark Fountains with their own presence. Like, to retcon themself into the history of the Dark World once it’s created? Maybe they can travel to the ‘past-that-has-always-been-there’ of a Dark World even though it’s not supposed to ‘actually exist’? Or maybe they truly only exist as a Backstory Element in various Dark Worlds but are somehow also aware of the fact that they do not truly exist save for in the past and the third-person, and are working with that knowledge? A villain you could never confront under normal circumstances because they never ‘is’ and always ‘were’?
I think all of these options kinda make sense within the Neverending Story Logic while also being kinda brain-breaking in the way that they directly interact with the paradox in the center of it all, which is The Point.
And I think it all work pretty well with the idea that Someone is Gaster. Cause, like, Gaster in Undertale was stuck in a weird state of nonexistence and  existence where he DID exist in the past (since his creations, most notably the CORE were still around) but somehow it’s like he never existed in the present. So him (or even just some sort of being related to him) being able to interact with the Deltarune universe only through the Past Tense and\or through Worlds that technically do not exist kinda makes sense to me???
And it also factors into one thing I’ve noticed about our Secret Bosses which is.... there are all potrayed as having been somewhat ‘corrupted’ by Someone but it’s... never really in a way that corrupts their nature as Darkners representing spesific objects?
You know, it’s not really “this Darkner is a representation of Object and therefore they are X, but then Someone came along and through their influence the Darkner became Y” as much as it is “this Darkner is a representation of Object and therefore they are X but they actually used to be Y before Someone came along and made them X”.
Like, Jevil is locked up because he has been driven mad by Someone, but also because the Jocker Card is often ‘locked out’ from many Card Games. The greater understanding of the world given to him by Someone seems to have made him more powerful and unpredictable... but powerful and unpredictable  is also just what a Joker card is.
Spamton is a barely-coherent madman living in a [[GODDAM GARBAGE CAN]] because of Someone’s influence, but also because Spam Mail is often barely-coherent and usually gets thrown in the garbage (and Spamton spesifically seems to have been created by a pile of spam-emails in the recycling bin).
Tumblr media
When Someone abandoned Spamton and left him to crash and burn, can we call that an intentional act of maliciousness on their part? Or was that simply an inevitability that not even they could stop, because Spamton is fated to end up in the garbage when he reaches his actual present-day ‘creation’?
Like, just as I can say “from a Darkner’s perspective they and their world always existed but really they are created by the Dark Fountains” I can also say “from a Darkner’s perspective, if Someone hadn’t come along, Jevil would still just be the Court Jester and Spamton would still be a somewhat incompetent Addison. But from really, without Someone’s influance, Jevil would still be a Very Strong Clown in Jail and Spamton would still be a rambling garbage-dwelling conman, it’s just that the reason to their situation wouldn’t be Someone-related.
Cause you have like the Dark Fountain kinda forming the Joker Card into a Powerful Clown that is Locked Away, and then Somone butts in like “and the REASON for why he’s locked away is MEEE”. An the other Dark Fountain is like ‘Spam Mail in a Bin’ = ‘A weird conman who lives in the trash and is both very driven but incredibly incompetent and kinda off-putting’ and then Someone makes it so They Did This to Him. But by doing that they did corrupt Jevil and Spamton further due to their otherworldly and paradoxical nature, and the knowledge they seem to hold. If Someone hadn’t interfered, Jevil might not be quite as powerful and Spamton might not be quite as miserable, but there’s still isn’t truly an option for Jevil and Spamton to remain the people they and other Darkners remember them once being.
And linking this back to Gaster... in the Undertale’s universe his situation was very much that he was... a Cause removed, while his Effects still remained. Again, even though he seemed to have been somewhat ‘erased’, the CORE he designed still remains standing and active.
And meanwhile here we have Someone as, like the way I think they operate, they’re like a rogue Cause attaching itself to Effects. Which is possible because they truly are reversed when it comes to the Darkner’s pasts. And I think that if Gaster’s goal is just, basically, to Exist within the Deltarune Universe  - there’s a certain logic in the idea that he’s trying to Make Himself Exist by inserting himself into Darkner’s backstories, no matter if it keeps driving them crazy(er).
This also raises the question of like... did Someone have any agency in picking their ‘Effects’? Like, is the reason why Someone’s has influanced Darkners that ‘make sense’ for them to influance like Jevil and Spamton and not like... Jigsaw Joe and Tasque Manager is because Someone is deliberatly trying to minimize their corrupting influance by targeting Darkners would be kinda Fucked Up regardless? Or is it something that they can’t even control and it’s more that the powers of Inevitability of the Dark Worlds make it so they can’t change what the Darkners are too much?
Man I hope any of this makes sense it’s like 4AM lol.

If there is magic in the light world, I will eat my hat
And here's why:
We've already seen a world with magic, so every difference between worlds is important:
Tumblr media
toriel's stove
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the books on magic in the librarby- note that in deltarune it's a book of magic *tricks* that require *floating hands*
this also comes with a more profound understanding of the soul than we have in deltarune...
2. The Direct Evidence
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note that Susie and Noelle here are listing the ways in which the dark world is DIFFERENT than the light world, also following on that last line...
Tumblr media
sorry I got something in my eye
Tumblr media Tumblr media
note again, that magic is referenced in terms of tricks- sleight of hand- only further emphasized by the name "jongle" a portmanteau of the words "juggle" and... something else (this carries over in JP)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now this one is slightly more esoteric, but bear with me-
Tumblr media
the mere fact of a bathroom and the lack of healing the hot chocolate provides means that the food, quite simply, is not magic like it is in UT- it is decidedly mundane
LAST AND VERY IMPORTANT POINT:
DETERMINATION =/= MAGIC
THE ABILITY TO SAVE AND LOAD IS NOT, BY LORE, MAGIC
Tumblr media
THE ABILITY TO CREATE DARK FOUNTAINS IS NOT, BY LORE, MAGIC
Tumblr media
3. The Counterarguments
This first one is easy to move past, and a fairly weak argument overall, but it involves, in particular, catti:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pretty suspect right? until you consider the surrounding dialogue
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's an edgy goth teen- this is in reference to her family being loud.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
again pretty convincing right? not really no:
Tumblr media
"studying the occult" from a goth teen is about as reliable as it sounds- and on the same level as the party tricks from earlier.
the second counterpoint is something along the lines of "but what about noelle and snowgrave"
Tumblr media
to which the obvious answer is: we already know one line of spells from the "Dragon Blazers" games, it isnt much of a stretch for snowgrave be the metaphorical firaga to flare of final fantasy
Another relatively tame explanation could be that our monster allies simply *know* spells upon entering the Dark World (Susie with Rude Buster, Berdly with his Tornado) and snowgrave is either something she acquired through the route (Like susie with ultimate heal) and REALLY doesn't want to use, or a spell she simply actually doesn't know.
The other two counterpoints however, are harder to dismiss, and they have specifically to do with monster biology
Monster Funerals, technically speaking
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While not directly stated in game, its a fairly reasonable assumption to make that the reason monsters turn to dust when they die is their lack of physical matter. Where this becomes relevant is through Father Alvin's infamous line about "this hammer" which implies that the burial tradition (and thus the physicality) remains constant between the two games. This would imply that, in-spite of the food and bathrooms, monsters are still made mostly of magic (further obscured by the lack of confirmation on monster blood we have)
2. Blookster
Let's assume for a second that monsters are physical. That they are confirmed to have blood and dont turn into dust and all that comes with it. Then what about Ghosts?
Tumblr media
hmm.

To meet the Contestants!
(which is happening this year for reasons)
Prunsel
Submissions: 2
Prunsel was born 27th of February 2021 from the dream of a Tumblr user then named tammycat, who now goes by @nyanoraptor . They dreamt they were playing Undertale, but when they reached Snowdin, Papyrus was replaced by an enormous, high contrast, photorealistic eyeball that looked directly at the viewer. This eyeball was, according to the dream, named Prunsel. Whenever Prunsel spoke, the music completely cut out and instead of text, a red glow would emanate from the text box. Since then, Prunsel has developed quite the fanbase for a character that came from a dream, and some even joke that it may be the brother Sans talks about in Deltarune.
Why it should win:
"Sans needs another sibling. For no reason except that having a giant hovering eyeball around would either greatly increase or decrease the quality of his life, and I think he would be willing to take that chance."
"All seeing eye"
Everyone is Neurodivergent
Submissions: 2 (indirectly)
Returning from the first season after being eliminated by Everyone is LGBTQIA+ in Round One (much sad). Many characters in Undertale (and secondarily, Deltarune) are headcanoned as being neurodivergent. Almost every character can be read as autistic (or anything else if you look hard enough, really), Frisk and Chara's fanon dynamic mimics DID (so I've heard, I do not have DID nor am I familiar with it, it's just what I've been told), and characters such as Alphys, Sans, Toriel, Kris and Flowey show signs of mental illnesses like depression or PTSD. Not to mention I'm pretty sure a lot of the fandom is neurodivergent themselves. Overall, headcanons like this are very common. (If I got something wrong or said something weird, please tell me so I can correct it, I'm not professionally diagnosed with anything and am mostly basing this off of what I've heard secondhand.)
Why it should win:
"I think it's cool and fits their character" (in reference to a submission of Kris being autistic)
Fanfiction
Returning from Season One after being eliminated by Fangames in Round One. Fanfiction is a pillar of every fandom and though there are, of course, the good, the bad and the ugly, fanfiction is one of my favourite things about this fandom and has even led me to some conclusions about myself (ask me for fanfiction recommendations I have some good ones!)
Cosplay
Returning from Season One after being eliminated by Headcanons in Round One. Cosplay is seriously underappreciated. Speaking as someone who's first ever cosplay was Undertale, that's hard work, and cosplayers turn out with some amazing stuff.
Shipping
Submissions: 3 (indirectly)
Ah, the best and worst part of any fandom, the shipping. Shipping is both beautiful and a warzone, romantic or horrifying. I personally am not a big shipper (I like Alphyne and don't have strong opinions on almost anything else) and hold the opinion of like what you like, and if I don't like it I can block people. Popular ships in the fandom include Alphyne (Alphys x Undyne), Papyton (Papyrus x Mettaton), Soriel (Sans x Toriel), Sansby (Sans x Grillby), Suselle (Susie x Noelle), Krusie (Kris x Susie), Kerdly (Kris x Berdly), Kralsei (Kris x Ralsei) and Queen x Rouxls (I don't know their ship name lmao). As you can see, many of them are gay.
Why it should win:
"Lancer parent silly" (In reference to a submission of Queen and Rouxls being T4T)
"I love it Very Very much. I think that the silly gamers should have Minecrap dates together and stick it to the player" (In reference to a submission of Kerdly)
Theories
Submissions: 1
With such a lore-heavy game in Undertale and an unfinished game like Deltarune, theories are rampant in the UTDR fandom. Ranging from iconic meme theories (Steven After Not Surviving, Sans is Ness) to more recent theorising on future Deltarune developments, it truly is the lifeblood of our fandom.
Why it should win:
"I am way too tired to type a full answer but they are so interesting and even the 'bad' ones are interesting. There are so many and it's entertaining to watch people piece together these things."
Papertrail
Submissions: 1
Papertrail is a Deltarune AU comic made before the release of Chapter 2 by lynxgriffin. It features original lore and most likely other amazing things I don't know about (I haven't read this one either).
Why it should win:
"It's a Deltarune fan comic that was started pre chapter 2 which is surprising, the creator expanded upon the little info we had and made their own interpretation of the story, having such emotional moments and amazing art. The ending to the comic was absolutely fantastic and I love it soooo much!!! I love the designs and ideas of the dark worlds, they're all so unique! Also all the different Ralsei-like creatures are each fun in their own ways and don't end up being the exact same characters, they also align with Undertale's soul colours! Also Lancer calls each Ralsei-like creature a different flavour of toothpaste and that's very funny. (Did I mention how well they handled Kris and their being controlled arc???)"
Animations
Submissions: 1 (indirectly)
Speaking as someone who's dabbled (made a three minute PMV once) in animation, it is really hard, which makes all the amazing animations this fandom creates all the more excellent. With creators such as Lupucs, who makes stunning Deltarune 3D animation, and long-running series like Inverted Fate (featured in season one), the creations of this fandom deserve all the love.
Why it should win:
"The animations take a lot of time and work, all the models being made by Lupucs themself. The shading and textures and smooth animation is also just so stunning, there's one animation where they have a giant crystal statue of Susie and it is so well made for just a 5 second clip, it's insane." (In reference to a submission of Lupucs)
The Other Puppet
The Other Puppet is an AU in which the secret bosses are swapped with the main characters- Spamton and Kris, Jevil and Susie and Seam and Noelle all swap, while Ralsei is replaced by a being known as Dinsoda. It also is intended to have an adult show tone, according to the creator.
Deltarune: Chapter Rewritten
Submissions: 1
Yet another AU I know next to nothing about. It was created by The Winterer, and is a role-swap AU that swaps Darkeners around.
Why it should win:
"Really cool AU with great music, recently got a fangame, definitely the best Deltarune fan content" (a note that this was submitted for season one)
Undertale Red
Submissions: 1
Undertale Red is a fangame created by Taxiderby, featuring an OC of theirs called Red.
Why it should win:
"It's a genuinely nice fangame with a good OC that isn't another AU Sans. It's well tought through with good looking sprites and I believe it deserves a place in the good things of the fandom." (a note that this was submitted for season one)
Deltarune: Neglected Oversight
Neglected Oversight is a Deltarune AU created by @boredgrace23. It's basically Deltarune on Hard Mode; it follows the plot of Deltarune but everyone who steps into a Dark World, including Darkeners who live there, forget who they were and become lifeless shells. Kris and Susie are the only ones who remember and it is their jobs to save everyone by closing the fountains.
And those are our contestants! Once again, may the best UTDR fanon thing win!

Don't forget - Your choices still matter.
Another Deltarune analysis, featuring a non-techie person explaining a bit of tech and why we should probably be aware of it.
Since the day of its release into the public eye, Deltarune has made it a point to tell us that "your choices don't matter" -- whether "you" refers to either Kris or you as the player. Toby's already confirmed Deltarune to have one ending, and the game pokes a lot of fun at giving you choices only for your answer (if it even lets you answer) to be inconsequential. This came as a stark contrast to Undertale, where e v e r y choice mattered in the most unexpected ways. Even the choices we thought we erased, the choices we expected no consequence from, could come back with a vengeance later in the game.
So, before we get to into things, let's talk about how Undertale can make your decisions bite you in the ass.
Tumblr media
Undertale has a relatively small SAVE file, with only about 500 lines and flags altogether. In your computer's local app data, you can see up to three true SAVE files: file0, for your actual game; file8, referred to as "Flowey's" file; and file9, which is the auto-save file. Within these files, the game stores your name, inventory, room, and your progress through the story (along with other things). On a typical reset, files 0 and 9 are erased (file8 is suspiciously spared, but surprisingly not our target).
What doesn't get erased during a normal reset is the undertale.ini file.
Unlike the SAVE files, you don't need to interact with a SAVE point to update your .ini--it's automatic whenever certain events occur. And unlike your SAVE, which usually keeps track of events as a "yes" or "no", the .ini is a counter, meaning it also keeps track of the amount of times you've witnessed a given scene or done something.
Tumblr media
Here's a snippet of my current .ini file as reference. Among other things, we can see my pie preference (Bscotch = 2), how I've killed and spared Toriel once each (TK = 1 and TS = 1), that I've already walked through New Home the first time (Tale = 1), how many times I've died (Gameover = 1; I got cocky in the Undyne fight), and how many times I've walked through the final door (Won = 5). All of these entries affect what the game does, whether it's Flowey directly taunting me or Goat Mom getting deja vu over butterscotch pie.
In short: Undertale uses an external file to keep track of everything you've done, not just everything you've saved. It's honestly a very simple and effective strategy to make your video game meta. Doki Doki Literature Club actually does something pretty similar, using an external "persistent" file to keep track of what scenes you've played out with each girl and what leg of the story you're in. By having a file outside of your saves, something that can be updated in the background without extra action, you can effectively give your characters a ripple-proof memory-- or thereabouts, anyway.
Savvy players, however, will notice that Deltarune still doesn't do this; when you erase a file slot, there's no residual evidence of it both in the game and in the files. And that's true! There's points to be made about how the SAVE files seem to "hide" certain flags, like your vessel choices and your Eggs (which I could DEFINITELY talk more about in the future), but all of these choices are still confined to the same run.
But Deltarune may not need an all-encompassing persistent file-- just one that sees what you're still doing.
So far, there's only one event within the entirety of Deltarune that hints at the game reading not one, but all of your SAVE files at the same time: when you talk to Seam in Chapter 2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you've defeated Jevil in any one of your active CH1 files, you can access the Shadow Crystal and Jevilstail/Devilsknife in any of your CH2 files, even if they're not directly linked. Seam will even talk about you defeating Jevil, and be surprised when you say that you haven't. On first glance, this probably just looks like an anti-frustration tool; after all, the Jevil fight is one of the hardest in the entire franchise, and making players beat him in three different runs might be asking for a bit too much. Perhaps it's nothing...
Tumblr media
...But how do we feel about the dr "config" file versus "true_config"? Because I'm a little sussed out.
Tumblr media
Lo and behold, opening up the dr.ini file reveals a summary of all your active save files (both CH1 and CH2, in-game and end of chapter) in one place. Unlike undertale.ini, it's a much shorter summary with only 8 variables per SAVE. InitLang, Room, Date, Time, and Name are all self-explanatory; "UraBoss" refers to the secret boss fight of the chapter (0 = not fought, 1 = won violently, 2 = won peacefully).
But how about that difference between Love and Level?
I wonder how that changes during a Snowgrave run, or if future chapters include their own "Weird Route".
I wonder why the other files need to know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps Ralsei was right--and perhaps, should we continue anyway, our consequences are not confined to one timeline.

1 thing people confuse in the undertale and deltarune fandoms is Sans and papyruses nature with some conspiracy, let me explain
sans and papyrus in undertale are shown to not follow the laws of the games physics to some extent, they can teleport, do weird and whacky things, sans canonically travels through time and space to prank people, just silly goofs. They’re silly in that way toby just gave them the ability todo that stuff, that’s just what they do, they crash through windows, actually somehow sell fried snow, etc.
now when something relates to sans, like the boxes or the doors, or sans in deltarune, it’s not saying those items are directly from undertale or that sans is actually connected to them, it’s just using a reference point to show the abilities or explain the object or thing.
we know sans is known for being kind of weird, he teleports and breaks the laws of physics and travels across time and space, we know that’s how sans works.
soo, when there’s a box that’s somehow in two places at once, somehow works like a enderchest etc. it makes sense to call it a sans box, same with the sans doors in deltarune, same with sans in deltarune appearing to be the same sans in undertale, it’s not a grand conspiracy, sans and Papyrus are just able todo stuff that breaks the games laws, they’re the exception. It doesn’t need an explanation because that’s just how they are, it’s not necessary to explain it because of the way Toby’s written it.
it’s not sans and Papyrus if they’re not unexplainably themselves.
that’s just how they’re supposed to be. And sure, they definitely have more to them than what’s revealed in game. But that doesn’t mean we should jump too far.
just remember, sans and Papyrus are supposed to work in an unexplainable way, they’re supposed to make no sense. That’s why applying logic to them doesn’t usually work.
they don’t function off of in universe logic like other monsters.
no this does not confirm ecto, stfu.

is it this one? i'm sorry to have... offended (?) you? i wasn't specifically thinking of you when i made it though, i don't think. i wrote that a while ago.
the intention was not to discourage people from calling elfilis/elfilin they/them though or to insult they/them (and be extension it/its) characters though. it was to say that i don't see a problem with calling them something other than they/them and respecting other people's interps too. kinda like if someone hc'd a male character as a tgirl. i might not agree, but i would respect it. gender hcs should for fictional characters should be a pretty chill thing imo.
again, i'm sorry if you didn't like it or if i hurt you. if you spotted some legitimate issues with it, do tell me! but for now i stand by my points. i really hope we can sort things out since i don't quite like being called a horrible person.
hey man, nowhere in my post did i call you a horrible person. i said some of your reasoning was transphobic, which is a trap anyone can fall into, because unwittingly repeating unfortunate rhetoric is very much not a moral judgement.
and i wasn't offended by your post, because it's a sentiment i pretty much agree entirely with, just couched in some kind of silly reasoning and a broad misunderstanding of what people are actually complaining about.
most of the folk saying things like this aren't complaining about people using different pronouns for established characters (elfilis, in this case) in their own headcanon. as it was stated in my post, we're frustrated about people straight up misgendering elfilis on a universal basis.
this is an extremely widespread and specific problem with characters whose pronouns are they/them, or god forbid it/its. look at any given character whose pronouns are they/them and you will see countless people in the english-speaking sphere flat-out refusing to gender them correctly. for just a couple examples, look no further than frisk undertale + kris deltarune, the gems from houseki no kuni, and yes, indeed, elfilis. this is such an ingrained and common problem where people just innately reject the possibility of a character using they/them pronouns, let alone the idea that they might be nonbinary in any way, and because of it, you get people constantly misgendering these characters and bending over backwards to justify themselves: "oh, well, you know, this character just doesn't seem like a they/them... it was never stated directly... i'm just more comfortable using he or she..."
it's a longstanding, observable issue. elfilis, predictably, doesn't escape it either, and thus you have rafts of the english-speaking fanbase ignoring this character's proper form of address.
and elfilis' pronouns are in fact canonically they/them and it/its, by the way. this is part of the transphobic reasoning i was referring to: in both real life and regarding fictional characters, it is transphobe standby number one to insist and insist and insist and sealion into infinity that there's ~plausible deniability~ on they/them pronouns. it's used because we haven't met this character! we were never told for certain that this character uses they/them! it's for literary ambiguity! they/them are plural pronouns so it's the text referring to multiple people!
Tumblr media
i mean this in the kindest possible way: you are just incorrect here, on multiple points. there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about elfilis' pronouns. multiple times, elfilis is strictly, directly referred to with they/it, where elfilin is referred to with he/him. the game is not being ~vague~ here, it is presenting you with plain information. the game not telling us elfilis' precise, discrete gender identity is not the same as the game not telling us elfilis' pronouns. elfilis is referred to with neutral pronouns in every language except for the ones that literally don't have neutral pronouns.
(even french has a well-known and accepted neuter pronoun these days, but our good friends (derogatory) l'Académie française refuse to ratify it so NoE didn't use it in the localisation.)
additionally, kirby is not referred to with gender-neutral pronouns. i assume you're referring to japanese here, in which case you've been misinformed by a common misconception spread by people who don't speak japanese. kirby is never gendered at all in japanese. it's not "kirby is canonically non-binary in japan!" or "kirby is canonically they/them in japan!", kirby is canonically nothing in japan. they go out of their way to not mention it. depending on your translation standards, japanese doesn't even have "they/them" as a singular pronoun. i explained this in my post here, and there's an additional post i made on the topic regarding a slightly different version of this fandom misconception here.
anyway, tl;dr, no-one is complaining about people giving elfilis different pronouns in headcanons and AUs. we're complaining about the exhaustingly common phenomenon of people forgetting how to be normal about gender when a character uses they/them.

ok
ok ok ok
So I got a theory
I was thinking about the exchange between Susie and Queen at the end of the weird route, the one where Susie says Noelle needs to wake up, and Queen replies and says the Noelle has already awakened too much, and I was thinking what does that meeeean??? Like what do you mean awoken? Needs to go back to sleep implies that she underwent some sort of change during the route, or some change started that needs to be stopped. And like yeah obviously she starts to get more violent and "stronger", but that doesn't seem like waking up, right? Waking up almost seems to imply she is leaving a fantasy (dreams) and entering or learning about the real world (being awake). And then it hit me.
Us
The entire weird route is caused by Us messing with things that we shouldn't be. Messing with Noelle. Telling her to do things. Most of the time we seem to be talking through Kris, but remember during the Berdly fight? When Kris is downed? She can still hear our voice. We are talking to her directly.
What if Noelle waking up is actuality her beginning to become fourth wall aware? The weird route ended with her vowing to figure out what's wrong with Kris, and assuming she is successful, that would mean she would learn about Our existence, and in turn learning the true nature of her world (or at least seeing it in a similar manner to Flowy/Chara/Gaster/Sans(???)/other characters that are aware of the Player on some level). Waking up from the dream of Deltarune.
But what about Queen? How would she know about this? The very fact that she says Noelle has already awoken too much and needs to go back to sleep implies that she herself is awake and knows about Us. And that can't be, right?
Well
There is already a fair amount of evidence that Darkners as a whole are awake (and just to clarify in case it wasn't clear, when I say awake I mean aware of Us). The most obvious one is how Castle Town is named after Us if you check one of the signs, and how the Darkners seem to talk to and about Us, referring to Us as "Boss". Assuming this trait extends to all Darkners, we can assume that Queen is also on some level aware of Us. (This would also explain a lot of Ralsei's weirdness, and a lot of people already theorize that he knows about Us)
Our interference in the weird route has begone to chip away at the fourth wall, the barrier between Us and the characters in the game. This has caused Noelle to begin to "wake up" andtake notice of Us and the true nature of her world. Queen in turn takes notice of this, and decides that Noelle for some reason cannot be allowed to wake up fully, and instead tells Susie that she must be allowed to continue to sleep, to dream. All this leads to one final question:
What is Queen afraid of?
What happens when Noelle really wakes up?

okay so apparently my ramblings about this would not fit in tumblr's stupid 30-tag limit which i had no idea existed until just now so i'm putting it in my own post. the english-japanese utdr language barrier fascinates me endlessly, especially when it comes to nonbinary characters. because third-person pronouns, if i'm not much mistaken, aren't really used in japanese, but first person pronouns of varying levels of formality, familiarity, and gendered connotations are- there's a whole bunch to choose from, and this interests me because it means that when you have characters like frisk and kris, who almost never if ever get the chance to talk about themselves, their nonbinary-ness is likely to get lost in translation if it's not directly acknowledged by the plot.
because in english everybody uses they/them for frisk, kris and chara. and we know, therefore, that they are nby. but a japanese player has no real way of knowing that- even if they do see frisk or kris or chara use "watashi" or another gender-neutral pronoun to refer to themselves, that wouldn't functionally mean anything, because watashi is used abundantly by many, many cis and binary-identified japanese people. there is no designated nonbinary first-person pronoun in japanese (and, y'know, they've got plenty of gender neutral first person pronouns and gendered third person pronouns are rarely used, so there's not really any need for it).
plus, there's the fact that if you're a japanese utdr fan and you're tweeting something concerning frisk or kris or chara or whatnot, then your non japanese speaking followers will use the translate tweet function to translate it, and google will almost always fill the sentence in with he/him or she/her by default, so that causes misunderstandings about many things- it's so interesting to me, and it's part of why i'd like it if kris were plainly acknowledged as nby in a future chapter- it'd help clarify it, not just to the english-speaking transphobes who know kris uses they/them and refuse to listen, but to the non-english-speakers who wouldn't have any way of knowing otherwise. of course, if you're fairly online, you might see people talking about it in posts and stuff and find out that way, but i digress.
it reminds me of a tweet i saw once from a japanese utdr fan- it said something like "i think most americans draw nui as a boy". nui, of course, being seam's name in the deltarune japanese localization. thus implying that this person and many other japanese fans draw seam as non-male.
which makes perfect sense! because, and i LOVE this bit of trivia, the japanese first person pronoun seam uses for themself is atashi! which is a super feminine pronoun! actually, it used to be used by men in the past, but these days it's used almost exclusively by women and some older men, so the gendered connotations seam is implying through the use of this pronoun are confusing, to say the least! are they saying it because they feel more feminine, or because they're older and would use atashi in the style of an older japanese man? it's so so fascinating to me and i love that tweet because when i saw it the differences in the japanese version of the game (and, thus, the japanese fans' understanding of the characters) versus the english really clicked for me for the first time. i loooove translation <3
