Auctober 20: Special Interests ✨
(sorry it's late)

As a kid, my special interests were mainly mythological things; fairies, goblins, and the likes. When I was in 5th grade, I probably read all of the Mythology Around The World (not the actual title) books at least twice.
6th grade was when the "Twilight," book series came out. I wasn't interested in the book series, but I became interested in vampire lore, and was fascinated by how it differs from place to place. That's when I started looking into darker mythologies 😼
In high school, I became fascinated with other cultures and history. Not in a "this is the model of tank used in WWII," kind of way. In a, "This is what it was like living in the Victorian Era," kind of way.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE "The Royal Diaries," book series and anything of a similar format, because it's fascinating to me how humans lived long ago, and how things have changed or stayed the same. Some people I had a particular interest in were...

I'm starting to think this might have been a special interest as well 🤔 When my mom was pregnant with my sister, I was WHOLLY fascinated in how babies developed in the womb and how so much change/growth happens in the first few years of life. I just LOVED babies and toddlers, to the point that I'd inch closer and closer to random strangers if they had a baby 👶 and ask to touch/hold/play with the baby. I grew up with the dream of having a big family with lots of kids.
But now that I've grown up and realized I'm a sex-repulsed asexual 😅 I don't really see myself having children of my own anymore. So, instead, I work with kids as an assistant teacher 😋 I get to pour my love and fascination with child development into my job.

WOWM
so What Once Was Mine came out and I read it.
My General Thoughts are that this book was something of a rollercoaster but in like a pop up carnival with dubious safety regulations and diseases in the DIY log flume water kind of way. I had some fun reading it but I also feel like I picked up a rash.
If you're like me and you enjoy picking a book apart for morsels of interesting concepts then you might enjoy it, if you think holy shit why the fuck is a literal real historical serial killer in this book I need to see this then you might enjoy it, if you care about engaging plots and character beats then you probably won't.
If you want to ask me anything specific go ahead, but otherwise for more in depth thoughts: spoilers ahead
Basic Summary of the Plot
Okay so here's the deal. The story has the framing device of two siblings in a cancer ward, where one tells the other a story. I'll get into that later, but that's how it starts. Our actual story starts with a pretty long prologue: We learn that the King & Queen got the Moonflower thinking it was the Sunflower, Rapunzel was born with silver hair, and then baby Rapunzel kills a maid who accidentally hurt her when brushing her hair.
Oh, by the way, Max is a human man named Justin Tregsburg. Yeah.
Anyway, the royal family puts out feelers for legit witches who can safely take care of Rapunzel because the baby is too dangerous, and Gothel shows up to take her away. Queen Arianna visits Rapunzel once (but is only allowed to watch through a peephole) and decides watching another woman raise her child is too painful and throws herself into restoring the kingdom's orphanages instead.
Now we're in the present. Rapunzel is nineteen and she wants to go and see the lanterns (a mourning tradition of the Dead princess in this story). She tries to argue with Gothel but gets shut down, and Gothel makes her kill a chicken to prove the point that she can't go outside because she's too dangerous. However we as the audience already know Gothel plans to sell Rapunzel off as a bride or a servant or a weapon to some other nobles, because she's evil.
Also by the way Gothel still has access to our Sundrop Flower and is using it to live forever that's just a thing that happens in the background.
When Gothel is gone Rapunzel watches as a man (Flynn) stores a satchel in a tree outside of her tower, and that motivates her to leave the tower for the first time. Then she goes back inside the tower with her prize of a crown, and a skink she found and named Pascal. Rapunezl and Gothel have another spat, and Rapunzel decides she will run off to see the lanterns and she will find Flynn and make him her guide.
She ends up at the Snuggly Duckling and she doesn't find Flynn but she does find Gina, a young career criminal girl looking to break the glass ceiling. Gina agrees to help her find Flynn. They find Flynn, and he agrees to help guide Rapunzel to see the floating lanterns for a split reward of the crown with Gina.
The Snuggly Duckling gets burned down by Countess Bathory (yes that Elizabeth Bathory) and the Pub Thugs are pissed about it and also they're helping Rapunzel even though she didn't sing the I've Got A Dream song don't worry about it. We learn that the nobles that wanted to buy Rapunzel are now hunting her down so she can go to auction.
Gina takes them to her adopted mother's cottage. Gina's mother is a white witch, who goes by the name of Goodwife. She doesn't get an actual name she's just The Goodwife. Anyhow, the cottage is a magic safe space (for now) and Goodwife teaches Rapunzel that her hair isn't inherently evil and may not even be all that deadly! Rapunzel learns that her hair has other powers too, like the ability to turn skink Pascal into a sentient Chameleon. Yeah.
Also Goodwife tells Rapunzel she's the dead princess but this isn't like, an immediate call to action. Not a lot happens until we get this story's version of the Mother Knows Best Reprise where Gothel finds Rapunzel again but has to flee, but this Rapunzel has a bigger support network and isn't buying it. Flynn and Gina decide the safest course of action is to bring Rapunzel to the castle, but along the way she gets kidnapped by the Countess.
Gothel is pissed because she still wants the money for Rapunzel, so she rallies the armies of all the opposing bidders. Flynn and Gina convince Max the Man to send for his troops, and he joins them in going to the enemy castle. Flynn tries to sneak in, gets caught, and meanwhile there's a bloody battle out the front between the noble armies. Max jumps into the fray, Gina turns around and rallies the Pub Thugs.
Rapunzel uses her shrinking magic (!) to disappear half the castle and escape with Eugene, and the Pub Thugs arrive and basically end the battle. The Captain is dying but it's okay! Rapunzel turns him into a horse :) Also Rapunzel sees Gothel and tells her to fuck off.
The story ends with a tearful reunion between Rapunzel and her parents, Eugene and Gina are implied to be biological siblings, and things are good but of course in direct parallel to Cass Gina leaves at the end to become an adventurer. The end.
(There are a few other smaller plot beats, but you get the idea.)
MY THOTS
So here are my thoughts™.
Framing Device
I'll just state that I didn't like that the story was told via the vehicle of an older brother telling his 16 year old sister a different version of the Tangled Movie in a cancer ward. From what I've heard it also isn't normal for the Twisted Tales series to use a framing device for the AUs either.
I sympathise with the author's personal story, of course I do. That doesn't mean I'm stirred with compassion every time the flow of the story is interrupted to remind you to be sad because this is a story being told to a girl sick with cancer. It feels more than a little tragedy-porny rather than emotionally touching, and maybe that's because I'm too burnt out on real life tragedy to waste emotional energy on fictional cancer patients but we don't need to do Fault In Our Stars discourse again.
Real World References
This story goes heavy with Real World references. And another issue with the framing device as above is that you do feel like this is a story being told by someone namedropping every historical figure they know which makes it harder to get into the story.
There's like... a lot of references to Christianity, particularly in the prologue. There's a priest that thinks Rapunzel's hair is the work of the Devil or whatever. It's a lot. The Patriarchy is a thing. And that's not even getting into the Countess. I put it very succinctly in my notes so I'll paste it here:
I wish she’d just been an OC who could exist to chew scenery because the fact that she was a literal historical serial killer is super. Off putting. Like, she could have been an obvious reference to Bathory, but it feels like Miku Binder Hamilton levels of uncomfortable to me.
I miss Lady D.
Which basically sums up my problem with trying to take the setting of Tangled and put it somewhere in the Real World and somewhere on the Timeline. Who thought this was a good idea.
Misc. Thoughts
So, I used the five highlighter colours my ipad allows to organise my thoughts and organised them accordingly: Yellow for out of place IRL references, Blue for worldbuilding/character points that aren't plot relevant but still interesting, Pink for when something I find personally amusing happens, Purple for when the story feels like it's trying to 1-up the movie in some kind of way and Green for Heterosexual Nonsense. I'll touch on those last two in the Character sections but be prepared.
Also: for a book about giving Rapunzel killer hair, her hair isn't very dangerous. I wanted to see Rapunzel kill someone, and I'm disappointed that I didn't.
Characters
I'll do a deep dive into my thoughts about the characters before wrapping it up. I'm starting with Gina because she's honestly the easiest to get through.
Gina
Gina is a new character introduced for the story. She's a young woman trying to make it as a career criminal but keeps hitting that glass ceiling. So here's the down low, for all those who want to know: Gina is basically Cass, only not really. She's implied to be Eugene's biological sister, as previously mentioned, but you can imagine she's Cass the entire way through without breaking your immersion because if you imagined Cass if she were adopted by a Goodwitch rather than the Captain and had a looser, more wilderness survivor than trainee guard upbringing then you get Gina.
I liked Gina! I think she's fun as her own character too, and her best moments are when she's interacting with her mother Goody Goodwife, and she of course picks up a natural sibling rivalry with Eugene, but I was disappointed with how little she really bonded with Rapunzel because she needed to make room for Eugene and Rapunzel's romance.
Rapunzel
Okay, here's our protagonist. There's a notable effort to make Rapunzel more active in her destiny and whatever, and sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't. I was worried they'd try to go full butt-kicking girlboss with her but I was pleasantly surprised that Rapunzel was pretty useless in most scenes, genuinely love to see it.
With a more intimate look into Rapunzel's psyche through the medium of prose, we see Rapunzel really questioning Gothel's behaviour even before she leaves the tower, and while I appreciate that she can develop her own cynicism I feel it starts unnecessarily early. This is my purple colour; the movie needs to be "fixed" by showing the readers that this Rapunzel is quicker to distrust Gothel. She's also quicker to hatch a plan to go outside of the tower on her own, and she makes a plan to make Flynn her guide for the lanterns even though he never stumbles upon her in the tower- and even though she has a perfectly rational reason not to trust him which is that he is a stranger and a Wanted Thief.
In the moments where it does work is when Rapunzel is surrounded by her new support network: Flynn, Goodwife and Gina, who encourage her to question Gothel's sincerity, and Rapunzel comes up with her own defences for Gothel so that she can poke through them herself.
I have some other thoughts about Rapunzel's hair and her powers, like how the story provides the interesting concept that her hair gets different powers with the different phases of the moon, but a lot of the powers are uhhh stupid and also I feel like it really robs the story of the whole gripping conflict of "Yes I'm Rapunzel Yes my hair kills people what of it".
In as far as just Rapunzel herself though, she still felt pretty in character nonetheless, and maybe that's all I can ask.
Flynn Rider / Eugene Fitzherbert
My boy I am so sorry. They neutered my boy.
Long story short: Eugene in this story is the sexy lamp. He contributes nothing to the plot except to be there for Rapunzel to drool over. And of course because he won't get any character development, he starts from the very beginning as a sweet soft boi with none of the Flynn Rider characterisation from the movie because we don't have time for that, he needs to be husband material stat.
His whole character is the colour green for Heterosexual Nonsense.
So, here's the problem. In the movie, there's not a lot of time for ~friendship~ between Rapunzel and Eugene because they kind of immediately see each other as a romantic prospect. And whatever, it's a movie and there's only so much time. But this book had the opportunity to take things a bit slower and instead chooses to make Rapunzel get jealous whenever Eugene and Gina interact and for her to be constantly wishing he was holding her hand.
Say what you will about Lost Lagoon, but it tells a good romance story just by virtue of not intending to be a romance story, because the author is trying to convey a strong bond between Rapunzel and Cassandra without using "and they kiss" as a cheatcode. What Once Was Mine says "he was a boy, she was a girl, could it be any more obvious?" and leaves it at that.
Now as for how this all pertains to Eugene's character? Well, it just robs him of any flavour. In the movie there's a clear distinction between Flynn and Eugene, when we learn Eugene's real name about halfway through. We see a clear difference between the Flynn we knew- kind of an asshole, wanated to drop Rapunzel off at the Snuggly Duckling and get rid of her- and Eugene, who is sincere and chooses Rapunzel as his New Dream in opposition to his Old Dream of living alone on an island with a bunch of money.
This version of Eugene is basically Eugene all the way through, because the plot doesn't really need Eugene there but he has to be there because it's a Tangled AU so there's no Rapunzel rescuing Flynn from the guards and healing his hand scene, he just loves her immediately and that's that. They have a little spat at one point but it's cleared up later and not because they actually communicate but because they kiss.
Rapunzel only learns Eugene's real name at the very end of the story, and gives a speech about how Eugene is the real him, but it's just so flat because 'Flynn' has been sincere this whole time? Anyway he does nothing of value for the entire story except be there for Rapunzel to lust after. Eugene I'm so sorry.
Gothel
Gothel's sort of the Big Bad and is characterised as an abusive asshole, the usual. I wish there were a bit more nuance to her character but then again in this story she's not just being passively evil- taking care of Rapunzel for selfish reasons but nevertheless maintaining the status quo- she's being actively evil in trying to sell Rapunzel off.
It's notably funny that Gothel sees the Countess Bathory and is like "what the fuck".
Anyway Gothel in this story also feels very weak in part because this Rapunzel is more critical and in part because this Rapunzel has a new support network. It's for that reason the Mother Knows Best Reprise scene doesn't really work, because the original has Gothel pit Rapunzel against Eugene, whereas she can't do that here so it remains a Gothel vs Rapunzel thing.
She gets a boring death as an epilogue addendum that someone rips out the Sundrop flower, which tbh? lame. It would be a lot more fun if it were open ended but I am also preferential to Rapunzel actually using her killer hair to kill someone. Please

This is 100% legal and not a cover up we swear.
All jokes aside the Traveling wax museum is a cover up for an attempt to revive Historical figures through some…definitely not humane means of consciousness recovery,and placing said consciousness into a mostly robotic body.
Though that’s not really important right now,so let’s meet the figures!

Low key my favourite
Based physically on Amelia when she was in her mid-late 30’s
An adventure loving daredevil who can keep a level head under pressure,highly adaptable and intelligent
Probably one of the few 100% sane people here
Has amazing advice for you.
Speaks in weird 1930’s English,and also knows ASL
Her plane does work,but,since it’s usually kept inside,she can’t go anywhere.
Had her memories messed with,can’t exactly remember how she died.
Favourite drink is tomato juice and she will 100% look at you like you’ve lost your mind when you judge her for it
Fred Noonan
Amelia’s companion,they are displayed together all the time.
Kinda just….a guy

She thinks she’s the main attraction but nobody wants to see the wax museum for her,they come to see people like Earhart and the Red Baron,so she’s….kinda pissy

Speaks Hungarian accurate to 1590-1610,and English that is a mix of 1590-1610 English and semi-modern english.
Not a nice lady.

Manfred Von Richthofen
The RED BARON BABY
Know the song ‘Red Baron’ by Sabaton? Yeah that’s accurate. TBH the Wax museum can be very accurately described by a lot of Sabaton songs.
Doesn’t know what fear is,very ambitious and kinda cold. Knows his goals and will stop at nothing to complete them
Usually displayed near Amelia and the other pilots,not particularly intimidating on the ground.
Would be very confused by the Snoopy-Red Baron connection
Much like Amelia,his plane also works but,again,inside,can’t go anywhere.
Doesn’t talk much about the war,not even if asked. He’ll only talk about it when he think’s it’s important
Usually seen with Raisa Aronova and her navigator.
Speaks German and 1910’s English,accent is heavy but you can understand him.
Most of the other’s just call him ‘The Baron’ instead of Manfred,he doesn’t mind.

Like…19,probably. She’s not that old but is somehow still absolutely terrifying.
Memory was very fucked up,can’t remember any of her life after her service in WW2.
Always seen with her Navigator Polina Gelman.
Does things ‘the Russian way’ aka never giving up and refusing to die.
Fuelled by spite
Again,plane works but can’t really be used for obvious reasons.
Speaks Russian and 1930-1940’s English with an accent,which is heavy but understandable.
People just call her ‘The Night Witch’
Has heard and jammed to ‘Night Witches’ by Sabaton.
She’s very blunt,but doesn’t usually mean to hurt people with the things she says.
Decked Manfred in the face when she first met him,the German accent made her think he was a Nazi. He was not a Nazi and was very confused. They hang out now,mutual bonding over war pilot stuff and flying in….not exactly durable biplanes.
Polina Gelman
Raisa’s navigator. Much to her annoyance people just call her the Navigator sometimes.
Slightly more chill then Raisa.
Good navigator,knows what she’s doing
Speaks similar Russian and English to Raisa.
Not much to say really she’s kinda just there.
Also can’t remember any of her life after her service in WW2.
Refuses to sugarcoat anything.
Francis Pegahmagabow
The Ghost in the Trenches
Master of stealth,even when just walking normally.
If someone was to scare a nighttime visitor it would probably be him

Can’t remember any of his life after WW1,but knows that he did have a life after a war.
Will pickpocket you just to prove that he can. Don’t worry he’ll give it right back afterwards.
A pretty good guy all around.

Very humble,blames all his skill on practice.
Not depicted with his scarring from taking a round to the face,but remembers what it looked like.
Much like Francis,he still has his gun and it still works.

Also really short,but he doesn’t seem bothered.
Speaks Finnish and 1930’s-1940’s English,accent is distinct but not hard to understand.
Hangs around with Lady Death and Francis a lot of the time.
Remembers up to the end of WW2 and nothing else.
Lyudmila Pavlichenko
Lady Death
People have a hard time pronouncing her name so they just call her Lady. She doesn’t like it but would rather that then her name being butchered constantly
A strong,kind of intimidating Russian woman
Will kick you in the groin if you mention how her being a woman sniper is in anyway bizarre for the times.
Usually found with Francis and Simo.
Didn’t like Simo at first,but grew to tolerate him over time.
Russian and 1940’s english with a pretty distinct accent.
Gun still works,of the three(other two being Francis and Simo) she probably fires at people the most. Have fun explaining that to your boss.
Remembers parts of her life after WW2 but not much,troubled by the fact that she has/had a husband and son and can’t do anything to find them now.

October Roulette’s memories of his past are fuzzy and disjointed, and the few fragments he’s managed to remember have made it clear enough that he’s probably better off in the dark. Born sometime in the 1600s, October should be among the echelons of supernaturals wise beyond their appearances, three centuries of life to witness war, love, growth and loss- and yet he remembers only fifty years. October woke up one day on the streets of Faerune with no memory of his past, a throbbing in the back of his head and the lingering red marks of shackles around his wrists and ankles. Plucking himself off the ground, he took a moment to take stock of what he did know: He was a vampire, he had several tattoos on his arms and chest, and he was absolutely starving. So with little more to go on than those simple facts, and no name to speak of, he set off to right at least one of those wrongs.
It was amazing what a good meal could do for the mind, as he quickly decided he must have had some clue as to what his name may have been with him, and starting with the pockets of his clothing, he began to piece together the image of the man he must have been before he awakened on the sidewalk. A torn piece of paper bore the name of a woman, ‘Odette Wrenth’ written in handwriting that, once he took a moment to track down a pen and paper, was confirmed to be his own. The name meant nothing without context, and the remainder of what had once been a letter of some kind was not, in fact, in his pockets. His next clue came in the form of the tattoo just behind his ear; ‘Take me for a Spin’ in careful script. In fact, he realized, that most of the tattoos marked into his flesh seemed to indicate a cruel game of chance, bullets and revolvers crawling along his forearms, the implication that he, or whoever had seen fit to have him tattooed, had a penchant for toying with fate in the most dangerous ways. That was... well, it was certainly more than he’d known before, and with the last thing on his person to go on little more than a handwritten receipt for an “October R.” from a local tailor, he determined that October Roulette was as good a name as any. Of course, that left him with only a place to start- a name didn’t feed him, or keep him housed, after all.
So he started. For a long time working odd jobs and doing backbreaking labor for the people of Faerune, ferreting his money away and taking housing where he could find it, often passing mornings in barns or the mausoleums of the local cemetery when he could stay up no longer, accepting the kindnesses of strangers who offered him room and board- and often repaying them with a bite on the neck and a substantially lower amount of blood in their bodies than previously. Eventually he managed to save enough to begin night classes, and with time, earned his medical doctorate, a veritable prodigy with anatomy that seemed to come as second nature, something he didn’t bother to question, as it got him his position with the police department as a forensic pathologist, picking apart the pasts of strangers who met a terrible end for his paychecks, while ironically making no headway on his own. He’s largely stagnated since then, satisfied with his day job and the freedom it affords him to spend around town and the comfortable apartment he’s called home for the past twenty years, October has made very few changes since his time as a student.
Which wouldn’t be so bad, if October Roulette wasn’t such an asshole. Charming to a fault, he has a gravitational pull that’s hard to resist, a natural comedian with a winning smile and the gift of gab that made him popular both as a handyman and a student, but these gifts only made his more troubling traits more difficult to pick up on. Manipulative and underhanded, October refuses to be outdone by anyone in his career or even life in general. A silver tongued bastard happy to lie his way through his immortality, he’s possessive of those he likes, and cruel to those he does not. Apathetic to the suffering of anyone who he hasn’t already elected to throw his chips in on, he can come off as blunt in the best cases and openly unkind in the worst. An impulsive hedonist, he’s a shameless flirt with a tendency for drunken flings and seeking pleasure on demand, unwilling to work too hard for his reward.

Notable Facts:
In another place, Vy would have lost her life in a car crash and reincarnated into another world as a civilian pianist, but in FGO’s timeline, she was scouted by Chaldea before she could start her second quarter in college. Chaldea had noticed her family lineage having some kind of Mystic aspects through a blood test she had taken for a yearly checkup before donating blood to a local blood drive. It resulted in them reaching out to her for an “extracurricular volunteer opportunity” that no college student could refuse. Vy would accept, albeit with her parents encouraging her, not realizing it would later lead her to becoming the main Chaldean Master in the Grand Order.
Vy went into Chaldea thinking she’d be a medical assistant from her resume stating her interest in science and medicine, only to find herself drafted into the Rayshift training that the FGO protagonist went through in canon as a result of her impressive stamina (thanks to biking miles around their home in America with her parents when growing up), tiring herself from all the shifting to the point of nearly dozing off in one of Chaldea’s hallways if not for Mash.
The “Mystic” part of Vy’s blood that drew Chaldea’s attention was something Vy’s parents nor grandparents were actually aware of, no thanks to how all grew up in poverty in Vietnam before coming to America and later, Japan, but it is actually from one of Vy’s ancestors coming in contact with a mage from the Mage’s Association. No one really knows what exactly happened between said ancestor and that mage, but it seems to explain Vy’s uncanny luck in getting some of the bigger names in the Throne of Heroes before confronting Goetia, including Arjuna, Minamoto no Raikou, and Achilles by the dawn of Camelot. Her luck has definitely made the Crypters scratch their heads, since Vy had used a nearly Fully Ascended Scathach-Skadi to take down Kadoc before having reached Scandinavia.
Vy adores Mash a lot, both from how earnest Mash is and her eagerness to learn about everything of the outside world past Chaldea’s blizzards. Dr. Roman at one point commented that they looked like sisters, just once, and Vy latched onto Mash as a surrogate little sister since, being conscientious of Mash’s health whenever they Rayshift together.
Since Vy’s family took her on a lot of cross-country road trips when growing up, including visiting national parks such as Yosemite and Zion to hike and sight-see, one of Vy’s goals when going into the Grand Order is making sure Mash gets to experience all nature has to offer one day like she did, wanting to introduce her to her parents when the fighting is all over. She has jokingly asked Dr. Roman and Da Vinci for adoption papers for her parents to sign for Mash.
When starting in Singularity F, Vy was initially scared of paving the way to Humanity’s salvation, but sucked it up once Mash saved her. At that moment, one of the thoughts running through her head was, “Mash is fighting so hard, so why can’t I?!” Since then, Vy has made quite the distinct image of herself when fighting with her Servants, being a no-nonsense leader who can and will sarcastically snark at anyone, including Kiara and BB of all people, when they are opposing her. To allies, she is both understanding and empathic, usually not asking any imposing questions and issuing orders only when emergencies call for it.
Anyone who tries to “bed” her will spark a loud and angry reaction, since Vy is not interested in any sexual relations and instead is still loyal to her family and friends that were left to the dust by Goetia and later the Foreign God. Expect some cursing too.
Vy’s romantic orientation is why Agartha is an untouched subject amongst all the Servants when bringing in new faces, because when Dahut in Drake’s body proposed rape to her outright during the Pseudo-Singularity, Vy’s reaction was basically, “I AM ACE, YOU JERK! SEX IS NOT FOR ME, CONSENT MATTERS, SO SHUT UP AND FIGHT ALREADY! IF NOT, I WILL KILL YOU WITH A RUSTY SPOON MYSELF, GODDAMMIT!” It’s another reason why Fergus and some of the other romantically inclined Servants such as Kiyohime and Elizabeth Bathory have kept their distance since, because Vy’s rage point back then was that unsettling. Robin Hood doesn’t bring up the subject of picking up girls in front of her anymore. D’Eon and Astolfo both have tried to keep Vy away from thinking about Dahut since.
The first Servants Vy ever summoned in the Grand Order was Lancer Diarmuid, Medea, and Chevalier d’Eon. The first 4-stars she ever summoned after them was Marie Antoinette and Archer EMIYA, so because of this and a lot of other things, all five Servants still find themselves in the occasional team because Vy grew that attached to them.
Her only Grailed Servants so far are Saber Arturia Pendragon, Rider Achilles, and Archer Robin Hood, both because they were there when fighting opponents such as the Lion King, Tiamat, and the Alter Egos in SERAPH, and how she loved all three of them for their legends even before coming to Chaldea.
When Vy first got a Holy Grail, she tried to give it to Mash as thanks for Mash protecting her for so long, but because of Mash’s status as a designer baby and Demi-Servant, she wasn’t able to take it. Instead, Mash still finds herself at the front lines team Vy has for mixed enemy battles, since Vy can’t find it in her to leave Mash behind.
Some of the Servants who have been with Vy longer find themselves getting a nickname for Vy to call out to just them, all because Vy sees them as part of her family and wants to be good to them. Robin Hood is a prominent example, where she calls him “big Robin” as a way to boost his confidence about being a Heroic Spirit, and in turn, he calls her “little sparrow.” Marie Antoinette is sometimes called “my Queen,” and some of the more younger Servants such as Illya and Miyu are called with the “-chan” honorific or “baby sis.” Mash never got a nickname simply because to Vy, “Mash is Mash, and I love your name.” There were many “awww”s.
It’s because of how she affectionately considers a majority of her Servants family that a lot of them tone down their arguments and bad qualities in her presence, simply because she’s there. An example is how during Babylonia, Vy had answered at the Underworld’s gates, “Ereshkigal is more beautiful!” to Ishtar’s face, both because she had summoned Ereshkigal long before entering Babylonia and that she had known Eresh longer. Eresh, who hadn’t Rayshifted to the Singularity at the time, could be found later hiding her red face in her hands as Da Vinci laughed out loud. Dr. Roman meanwhile had looked like he had swallowed a lemon at the time because of how blatantly Vy had put down Ishtar, and Ishtar barely reacted. Vy’s only reasoning afterwards was, “I did not appreciate being made into a makeshift cushion in our first meeting, Ishtar, thank you very little.”
There were a lot of times during Singularities where Vy, feeling bad for Dr. Roman being a butt-monkey of jokes, brought home a souvenir or two for the good doctor to take part in some of the better moments of the Grand Order. One such souvenir was a butter cake slice from Siduri in Babylonia, because he expressed wanting to eat it one night and she carefully preserved it with Mash to give it to him before confronting “Solomon” in the Temple of Time. It’s because of this that she dearly misses him, having found him as another surrogate father when he’d call her in for daily check-ups and talks over how Mash was doing.
When the Lostbelts happened, Vy started working a lot harder to raise her Servants and the morale of the rest of Chaldea’s staff, resulting in her gaining eyebags from losing sleep over too many Golden Apples and farming quests. Most of the Servants are all at Final Ascension and Max Level at the cost of this and QP, but it’s helped in making the Crypters lose some of their momentum.

Quarterly reading highlights for January - February - March

Crier’s War by Nina Valera - This is such a fun mix of fantasy and Scifi. A call back to classic YA, without any of the uncomfortable parts of that, and with a few unique spins. The stars of this book are its main characters, Crier and Ayla
Blood Countess by Lana Popović - I kind of feel guilty putting this on my list, because it feels self-indulgent to do so. Which is kind of a silly thought on a list of *my* favorite books of the first quart. It’s just that this book is precisely my overly specific shit, in so many ways. The main character is a midwife who also does medicine, there’s a dark and complicated f/f romance, it’s about Elizabeth Bathory, AND the protagonist is flawed in a way where it’s her fear and hesitation that make her flawed. Like... what more could I ever want?
Catfishing on CatNet by Naomi Kritzer - In this house we love Artificial Intelligence that have emotions, awareness, and caring connections to other people. As well as found families and internet friendships, hell yeah!
So You’ve Been Publically Shamed by Jon Ronson - This was such an interesting book. While I don’t fully agree with everything that was being said here and sometimes the tone rubbed me the wrong way, I still believe that everyone should still give this book a read and think about the principles that are being discussed in here.
DIE, Volume Two: Split the Party by Kieron Gillen - The first volume of this almost made it on my post for favorite books of 2019. It was so good! It has a really fun concept and is like, indulgently edgy, while it also retains its humanity as it explores those darker themes. And I just love the art of it. This is the same team that is behind The Wicked and the Divine, which is my favorite comic series!
All the Things We Do in the Dark by Saundra Mitchell - This is a very quiet and character exploration about a girl who is still very traumatized from being raped when she was a child (nothing is explicitly shown, it’s about the emotional impact the trauma has had on her) being forced to deal with her past and her feelings again after she discovers a body in the woods. It’s well done and emotional.
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado - A moving and powerful memoir about Machado’s experience in an abusive relationship But at the same time, this book is much more ambitious than being just a recounting of her experience. It’s a literary experiment, with different layers forms, and structures. It’s brilliant.
The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh - historical vampires in New Orleans, baby. Need I say more? Give me that extravagance.
The Devil You Know by K.J. Parker - Here you have just a very fun, very plot-twisty novella about a philosopher who makes a deal with a demon, told from the point of view of the demon. Lots of mind games, lots of intrigue, very entertaining!
Black Iris by Elliot Wake - This is a thriller revenge story about a bunch of fucked-up, edgy young women, who do drugs and destroy people’s lives. It’s not without it’s problems (oof, the portrayal of mental illness & addition) but it’s very well written and extremely compelling.

Do you have a favorite story/myth/legend about any of the heroic spirits?
I’m gonna be a basic bitch and say that Gil’s whole myth and legend is probably my favorite.
I honestly never would’ve started liking Gilgamesh as much as I do if his myth hadn’t resonated with me the way it did, and prompted me to do hours and hours of research into the original Epic. Just... the drama, the tenderness, the homoeroticism, the angst....... It all resonated with me and made me Feel Things, and I loved every minute of it.
Elizabeth Bathory is a close second, cause I had a weird obsession with her and her legend throughout high school. I did like. 3 different school projects about her cause I was so fascinated by her (and also I was gay but baby me didn’t realize that).

When Negan came upstairs, I had already put Kiara down for her nap, lunch was on the table and he was sighing as he sat down across from me. I waited until he tucked in, taking up my own fork and asking him what was wrong.
“Do I want to know what Porn Stache found so important to call you away?” I asked, biting into lunch with relish.
Negan snorted around his own bite and shook his head. “Bullshit,” he offered, once his mouth was empty. “He wanted to discuss complete and utter fucking bullshit.” Another sigh, and he kept eating and told me that Simon wanted him to know that not all of our Saviors were excited about the peaceful end to the conflict with Hilltop and Kingdom. And I imagined by “not all” Simon meant him and some other assholes I could give a shit about on the daily.
“Should we worry?” I asked, still eating carefully while watching my husband ponder my question.
Huffing out a breath, he seemed conflicted. “Knee jerk reaction is ‘no, of course fucking not’, Callie, but-”
“But you know I think Simon can’t be trusted,” I leaned back in my chair and considered our options. “You could nip it in the bud and fucking kill his traitorous ass.” Negan was smirking, but he was also giving me that dark eyed look that spoke volumes about whose ass he was actually thinking about.
“Or you could,” his voice had gone lower, to that deep dark place I loved.
“I swear, Negan,” I offered, as I got the dirty plates gathered and in the sink. “The thought of me murdering someone turns you on,” his arms wrapping around me as his body pressed against my back confirmed it. I rocked my hips back and felt just how fucking hot he got from the IDEA of me killing Simon. “Homicide is an aphrodisiac?” His lips meeting my neck had me thinking that I didn’t fucking care what turned him on, as long as he was ready, willing, and fucking able.
“You covered in blood?” He growled and his teeth took a turn on my sensitive skin. “Fuck, baby doll, that could be hotter than you wearing damn near any thing.”
I leaned back into him, letting Negan’s mouth and hands take me along for a hot ride. “So you want to see me coated in blood?” Gasping when his hips thrust into me, still fully clothed but not for long. “Like Elizabeth Bathory?” He paused so I chose to paint a truly fucked up picture. “She was a Hungarian countess, accused of bathing in the blood of peasant girls to keep her youth.” His hands were tugging my clothes off as I spoke. “You want me to walk up to Simon and tell him that I’ll be bathing in his blood like the Countess, and as though he were a simple peasant girl for my fucked up beauty regime?”
I didn’t get to give Negan anymore history lessons, since he had me filled full before I could go on.
The weeks went by as we took heart in the new normal that came from using negotiation instead of headsmashing to win over allies. Laura told me that Simon’s insinuation that there was disagreement in our course of action was over exaggerated. Were there pockets of discord? Yes, and I had more than a suspicion that those pockets were stirred by the man himself. Fucker.
Negan was watching me like I was a ticking bomb and I was thinking he was on pins and needles waiting for me to take him up on his offer to let me help Simon take his final breath on this planet, until I missed my period. Fuck. That was the point, as I watched his fucking eyes light up like he’d inserted fucking glowsticks in his ears, of his constant studying my person. Damn it, I’d been so wrapped up in the intrigues of our fucking community, that I missed the obviousness of his interest.
He was whistling as he brought me a pregnancy test to our rooms, saving me the trouble of going to the infirmary. I rolled my eyes and took it from him, while he picked up Kiara and bounced her, making her giggle wildly. Since my husband was occupied with trying futilely to get our daughter to say ‘dada’, I got to tinkle alone. I came out, leaving the test on the countertop, to see his eyes wide and thought maybe she’d finally given him his wish.
“Fuck,” our daughter said, with such certainty that I felt my own eyes go round. “Fuck, fuck, fuck.” Shit, I thought, that wasn’t ‘dada’ either.
“Negan?” His eyes met mine and I could almost see him trying to come up with an explanation. Biting my lip to keep from laughing, I shook my head. “We could always tell people she thinks that’s the word for ‘dada’?” I shrugged as his eyes narrowed. “I mean, I say it and you come running.”
“Callie,” his voice was sounding like a threat, but his eyes were twinkling. “You and I both know that when you’re saying it, I’m cumming inside you, and I’m not running.” That did it, we both started laughing as our daughter began basically chanting her newest word. “Princess,” he was trying to fight his laughter, and look serious at our little one. “That’s not a word that little ladies should be saying.”
This made me snort so loud that both of them stared at me. “Sorry, but I happen to know that is complete and utter-” I stopped just in time to NOT say ‘bullshit’. Let’s not add to her vocabulary just yet. “Nonsense. Mommy says that word ALL the time, Dada.” I raised an eyebrow and realized that our apartment was going to start being far more Sesame Street and a LOT less Tarantino.
Three LONG minutes, for parents of a toddler who liked the word ‘fuck’ more than she liked the word ‘Pop-Pop’, later Negan happily handed over tot wrangling to me to check the pregnancy test. Silence descended as I waited, even Kiara had grown quiet. Then, after hearing the toilet flush, and realizing that he’d taken a beat to take care of nature, he was in the doorway staring at his two girls.
“‘Tomato’?” My grin started growing as I realized we’d managed to make a second person. “I think we’re gonna have to think of a better name, sweetheart.” And then he was on the bed with Kiara and me, hugging us both and telling our little girl she was going to be a big sister.
And then, clear as a bell, she did it. She made him even fucking happier. “Dada.” Out of the blue, no coaxing, and it was out. “Dada.” She bounced a little and then, since clearly we could never have a simple family moment without a little embarrassment added in, she clapped and said, “Fuck.”

1. When I was a kid, my very South American family told me that a sweet little mouse was the one responsible for exchanging the baby tooth under my pillow for money. The consequence of this was that I developed a really assbackwards sense of superiority around other kids- "tooth fairy? Don't be a CHILD, that doesn't even make sense- it's a mouse."
2. I was also raised atheist and my family didn't believe in things like ghosts or anything. I think I always tried to be too practical at too young an age, so I wasn't afraid of ghost stories or monsters despite being real small. But then, in catholic school, I read a book about Elizabeth Bathory. And then another. And then I googled her. I must've been ten at most. I didn't know what a virgin was, but I was terrified for months on end that i could potentially be one and that Elizabeth Bathory would drain me of my blood because of it.
3. Spanish was my first language. I was born in America, but raised in Colombia until schooling age so going to school was full immersion into English. In the first grade, a full year later, they thought I had a reading disability for months until they realized there was a language barrier.
4. Frankenstein was formative for me. It was the first classic novel I had ever read and the teacher who put it in my hands was the first to make me feel challenged and listened to. As Mary Shelley would've wanted, I finished the book while a thunderstorm was happening outside. I fell asleep immediately after finishing it and had a nightmare. That following morning, I set myself to studying literature.
5. My first childhood crush was on a girl. In hindsight, I had been having queer experiences and was attracted to girls since a very young age but denial is a hell of a drug. I should've known something was up when my high school friends believed I was serious when I sarcastically went, "no, I'm into girls." Their loaded silence .... said a lot lmao
6. I never had a nickname growing up. When I went to study abroad in Scotland, one of the chaperones (who I worked for for two years by then) struggled to introduce me to someone. He admitted then that the reason he never called me by my name in the time we knew each other was because my name gave him a lot of struggle because of a speech impediment. We came up with 'Nia' and everyone we met in Scotland from then on just took to it, thinking it was a thing. I really love being called Nia now and it makes me really happy that it's become such a thing with my Tumblr friends 💗
7. Baking was my gateway into learning my way in the kitchen, but I don't like sweets. I'm good at baking, but I seldom eat what I make.
8. I've gone to most concerts alone because no one I know IRL shares my taste in music. I used to feel really awkward about that. Still, seeing Daughter and Ben Howard in concert was one of the greatest nights of my life.
9. Living in New York, I've seen a fair share of celebrities. I literally ran and slammed into Anderson Cooper. I ordered coffee before Hetienne Park did and was ships in the night with Matt Damon once, as he walked out the door with coffee while I walked in. There are others, certainly. I never really feel any impulse to bother actors when I see them. The only times I've gotten starstruck was when I literally bumped into Hugh Dancy on the street, when I met Janet Mock at a book talk, and when Misha Collins followed me on twitter. Also, when I saw the Black Sails cast at Comic Con. I was too anxious and timid to approach them.
10. The two passions I wish I could return to, if I only had more time, are watercolor painting and playing violin.

So, after hearing a rant on Snape, I noticed something. Movie Snape seems to have been... shall we say, dialed back. A lot of the worst things he did were cut from the movies. So, if I recall correctly, then just going off the movies, Snape was an emo kid who turned bitter when his crush rejected him for his bully, but he still loves her. Ok, tragic and sympathetic, if you ONLY go off the movies. I'll be over here in the group who's read the books and knows he's a horrible, petty, dick.
if you go by the movies only, a third of the characters don’t exist and the potters look like they were in their forties when they were murdered rather than being, y’know, 21. tiny babies. if someone’s only seen the movies, they do not get to talk accurately about the deeper nuances, much less declare someone a hero. they can do it all they like but they will be wrong.
god i will never stop being angry about snape. I hated him as a child, because I was the victim of a lot of bullying and while i had some teachers that, shamefully, contributed to that, i had good teachers too! so I knew that Good Teachers do not threaten to poison their student’s pets. [Elle Wood’s voice] they just don’t. a good teacher should never even bring up the concept of poisoning a struggling student’s pet. like. how the fuck. why the fuck. if you have a struggling student you fucking help them. assign the kid a damn tutor. i’m sure you have an upperclassman you can force to tutor neville, a ravenclaw or some shit. and his shit with hermoine vs the slytherins.. I was so furious as a tiny kiddo, and still am. I remember classmates who bullied me getting away with it all because people in authority covered it up (including That One Time Someone Tried to Kill Me) and to see snape doing that just...god i hated him. I waited, book after book, for someone to call him out. i insisted to anyone who listened that Snape Was A Bad Dude.
and then, oh god, let me tell you, he killed dumbledore. Snape fucking filled Dumbledore and i mean yeah I cried that book was sad but I was fucking gleeful because AT LAST no one could tell me, not even my own father, that Snape was a Good Person (tm)
and then the straight white boy bullshit in book seven. fuck that noise. he literally calls her slurs that he was /calling other people/ and hanging out with, you know, wizard supremacists and had expressed interest in a group that was not only calling for the murder of lily and most of her friends and her entire family but was /already starting to kill people/
and he has the gall to feel betrayed by her, to be upset with her, when she tells him “ my dude, you have no ideological issue with genocide of everyone like me, maybe this whole friendship thing isn’t gonna work out”
and here is what’s telling. what does snape do after lily calls him out for. like. you know. hanging out with deatheaters in training and using slurs against her? does heA) apologize and mean it, distancing himself from the fucking genocidal creeps that want to murder her and her friends, realizing how fucked up it is and throwing himself into heliping the Order and championing the rights of muggles and muggle borns everywhere out of earnest understanding that he fucked up
B) apologize and awkwardly try to distance himself from the fucking genocidal creeps, not joining the war but not fighting for Tom “I though elizabeth bathory had a good plan” Riddle, mostly because he hopes doing this bare minimum of not being an asshole will make lily love him
or C) apologize but then actively join voldemort for like three years at the height of voldemort’s terror, assisting in god knows what capacity of god knows how much torture and murder, actively betraying some unknown sap of a baby-- willingly! totally chill with a baby dying because why the fuck not??
the answer is C. i will never understand how anyone can see that he picked C and still think he’s a good person.
and even then, even then. he doesn’t give a shit about, you know, innocent baby, or any of the others voldemort wants murdered. he doesn’t even genuinely care about lily’s happiness. spare her life, kill the rest of everyone she loves. hat the fuck do you think that’s gonna accomplish, snape? “ oh my husband, whom i loved, and my infant child, along with all of my family and friends, are murdered. Sev, good to see you, wanna bang?” like. Snape, this is why you weren’t in ravenclaw.
(it’s been a while but they kept a lot of the lily snape shit in the movies and I feel like if that’s the case people should be able to infer that whole a/b/c choice. also casting Alan Rickman, whom many of my classmates thought was hot, was probably a bad move. like great actor, do not get me wrong, but they needed to cast some greasy haired 30 year old. i guarantee if they had, people would have been less conned into thinking snape was a good person)

Lizard Elizardbeth Elizabeth Bathory (with some Carmilla too) for @xenodile
Elizabeth Bathory is, well, Elizabeth Bathory in child form. She has horns and a tail because of the Innocent Monster skill, public knowledge has her family associated with dragons, so a dragon she is. She also has Mad Enhancement, which technically makes her a rare dual-class servant, but it’s VERY low rank and it’s only real purpose to let you know she’s, well, absolutely fucking bonkers.
Just like the real Bathory, Elizabeth is mentally ill: truly narcissistic, and also a psychopath. She actually can’t understand the pain of others and generally, pre-character development, doesn’t have a moral compass outside of “I want to do this”. The real Bathory was a noblewoman who killed young women and bathed in her blood to keep herself looking young and beautiful, because she loved attention, and loves beautiful things. When she was outed as a serial killer, she was entirely unrepentant, because her serfs were her property, they exist for her amusement, etc. Because of her vanity, they decided the best punishment was to lock her in house arrest, and ignore the shit out of her until she literally died of loneliness. Fate Bathory is that, and has those memories, but her psyche and body has regressed to a time before she was too far gone into crazy-town to learn that she was doing bad things.
Also because of her regressed mindset, she doesn’t entirely know how to process her fear of being ignored, so it gets projected into “I want to be a GLORIOUS IDOL!”. This leads to her general cutesy act, her NP taking the form of loudspeakers, her nicknaming the only ‘fan’ (in her mind, at least, they’re her fan, and not the only one) she has, Hakuno, as little piggy (male), or baby squirrel (female). Elizabeth wants attention, she wants adoration, and she wants it in incredible quantities.
So, obviously, when she was first summoned into the CCC moon cell timeline, and got freaking Lil’ Ronnie as a master, that wasn’t gonna fly. So she murdered poor Lil’ Ronnie, got approached by BB, and since BB is beautiful, hooked up with her immediately, and gets glued to Rin, who’s gonna be her master. This is.... Acceptable. And, also obviously, Elizabeth needs to beautiful herself, right? And there’s all the programs, programs being indistinguishable from humans laying around.... string ‘em up, drain and bathe in their blood.
While she’s with Rin, she encounters Hakuno, and Hakuno’s blank, lifeless stare of a particularly rare breed of cave moss starts working its magic, along with his servants’ comments. Eventually, she betrays Rin as well, and gets stuck with Shinji. She returns as an antagonist, and Shinji’s INCREDIBLE stupidity (fucking Shinji Tank) also helps Hakuno’s case.
After you fight said Shinji Tank, it’s revealed that she has a crush on Hakuno, and you enter her SG. SG being Secret Garden, the innermost part of a servant, where you essentially slap them with every flaw in their personality and mercilessly destroy them (this part isn’t a joke; it’s actually what happens).
Before that, however, you have a few interactions with her. Eat the dinner she makes, (almost die), shoot the shit, etc. It’s honestly a bit cute. Once the SG gets down to business though, that all goes up in smoke: she has her crimes laid out in front of her, and still has absolutely no understanding of wrongdoing. She’s irredeemable. She is forced into an endless Ice Maze, where she’ll be alone, for all eternity, and has a complete mental breakdown.
She shows up one more time however: when you enter your servant’s origin. She takes their place as your servant for the duration, and by the end of that is able to admit that she was at fault for her situation, so there’s still hope for her yet.
In Grand Order, the stable environment and all the kindness and attention she gets from servants during events is implied to completely rehabilitate her, or near it (see: her Halloween version). F/GO is arguably not canon on that point, however, because technically only the Singularities are canon, and Mashu is your only real servant.
In Extella, she carries over the knowledge from CCC that She Done Wrong. She has the misfortune of bringing that to a Tamamo in full relapse to Demon Courtesan Mode™, of all people, however, so it’s a crapshoot. She also brings her crush (and nickname) for her ‘fan’, Hakuno, who by the end of CCC sees her as a pretty adorable little scamp, but is pretty wary of her.
There isn’t much to expand upon here, if you’ve gone through Tamamo’s route it’s pretty heads up minus interpretation. Tamamo pushes her way too far, and Elizabeth eventually decides she’s done enough “atoning” and switches over to Velber’s employ with Archimedes’ meddling.
It’s worth noting, however, that she was this close to telling Tamamo and Hakuno about Archimedes, but was pushed too far away and Hakuno’s kindness wasn’t strong enough to pull her back. She keeps her crush on him, however, but she’s still a murderous narcissistic psychopath, and he’d be more a pet than anything else.
Essentially, CCC Elizabeth is a brat that eventually learns her lesson, tries to atone in Extella, but Velber happens. F/GO Elizabeth is that atoning Elizabeth in a proper environment for it, which also includes a Tamamo post character development.
Carmilla, on the other hand, is essentially a “what-if” Bathory, similar to Jeanne Alter Santa Lily eventually becoming just Jeanne Lily, because she embodies a childhood wish Jeanne had to see the ocean.
The “what-if” here being “what if we had Bathory in her full unrepentant, crazy glory?” She’s horrible, tortures people, murders young girls, and even traps Ritsuka in her Death Maze during one of her interludes. It is mentioned however, that she does have affection for them, in her own way, and will retaliate to anyone that harms them out of that affection. Though, she sees them more as a toy than anything else. There is a VERY slight hinting that she does harbor some guilt for her crimes, but it’s a stretch.
