Hii, can you explain kin for fun/kff?
Im nonhuman or otherkin/therian and hear about it but i really dont get it..
It's a thing that, as far as I'm aware, started on TikTok. Basically, it's people roleplaying. These aren't people who actually identify as the animals/species/characters they're roleplaying as, they've just appropriated the language used by actual alterhumans. The insidious thing about them, though, is that there is (or at least there was) a very loud segment of them who are very adamant that they don't actually identify as whatever they're roleplaying, because after all, they're not crazy. They're where the whole "I kin [thing they do not identify as]" (rather than "I'm ['type]kin") thing and the term "kinnie" come from. So if you ever see alterhumans, especially those of us who have been around a while, get up in arms over that language, that's why.
Basically, KFFers have undermined the alterhuman community, declared actual 'kin "crazy," and appropriated our terminology to the point people outside the alterhuman community are more likely to associate it with them than us. Which is, for a multitude of reasons, a Problem.
By contrast, otherlinkers also sometimes pick identities for fun, but have their own terminology and don't try to undermine the rest of the alterhuman community. Which is why I don't take issue with them, even if they have picked up some/all of their linktypes for fun.

❝ Most adults see teenagers as confused kids who don't understand much, while they're the pillars of knowledge and experience and know exactly what is right at all times. I think the truth is that everyone in the entire world is confused and nobody understands much of anything at all. ❞
🦇 Alice Oseman's I Was Born for This is an exploration of friendship, self-identity, and the effects of fame. "Angel" Rahimi lives and breathes one thing: The Ark, a boy band of growing, world-renowned fame. Joining The Ark's fandom has given Angel her best friend, Juliet, a community, and a place in the world. Too bad her Muslim family can't understand why The Ark takes up so much space in Angel's boundless heart. The band's frontman, Jimmy Kaga-Ricci, knows The Ark owes their fans everything, but sometimes...they're a bit much. It doesn't help that their more intense fans are shipping Jimmy and his bandmate, Rowan, or that their constant presence is triggering his anxiety. When Angel visits Juliet in London to meet the band for the first time, reality comes crashing down on all of them. Sometimes, fame isn't all it seems.
💜 It's no surprise that Alice Oseman has artistically explored coming-of-age themes through the universal concept of connecting through music. The Ark and resulting fandom give Angel a family and community; a sense of belonging she lacked in high school. At the same time, her position in the fandom has erased her individualism and identity (her real name is Fereshteh, which translates to Angel). As much as she loves the band, she's not IN love with them though. The Boys--Jimmy, Rowan, and Lister--have lost parts of themselves as well. Fans see the versions of them they want to see, and The Boys, knowing they owe their fans everything, smile and play their parts. They don't see Jimmy's debilitating anxiety, the relationship Rowan is trying to hide from the press, or Lister's depression, alcoholism, or bruised bisexual heart.
🦇 This is a deeply character-driven story; a story that's focused on growing up through friendships and found family, NOT romantic entanglements. As always, Oseman excels at creating diverse, nuanced characters, including:
🎵 Jimmy: trans, biracial Indian and Italian, gay, with severe anxiety
🎵 Angel: Iranian, hijabi, Muslim, queer and questioning
🎵 Rowan: biracial, Nigerian, and very protective of Jimmy
🎵 Lister: bisexual struggling with alcoholism and depression
🦇 One of the most important messages in this story is to love yourself first. The Boys get lost in their fame, which leads them to neglect who they are and what they need, while Angel loses herself (and potentially, her future) in the fandom. As a coming-of-age story, it's also a reminder that it's okay NOT to be okay; that recognizing as much doesn't make you weak, but human. However, I do think the final act is a little messy. Since the story is character-driven, the first half drags, while the second half feels like a tangle of ideas and motivations. I think the story would have been stronger if it focused on the three boys; if they gained Angel's perspective through a fan letter instead. There's so much to Rowan and Lister's story we haven't seen yet.

A letter to everyone who’s me - Chandler Leighton
Subpar vocals, seems like she wants to sing with her chest but it comes out in a warbled head voice instead. A vocal teacher could help her find a nice middle ground between her chest and her head, could steady up her tone and range. The lyrics were very much a 12 year olds diary entry, the whole thing sounded like a YouTuber’s attempt to go pro.

Oof girl doesn’t get angry easy. Sad? Nostalgic? Depressed? Self-pity? All those come easy. But anger? Shit takes a lot to get mama mad. It’s usually when she comes to the defense of those close to her- y’all talking shit about our good boys Mako or Rowan? You’re getting a stern talking to and bitter looks for moons. Or anything involving kits. Whether it’s someone loosing them (you know who you are 👁), harming them, or causing them distress will have Tender up your ass in a minute with some very passive aggressive remarks if not a rare hiss. Also kits straight up disobeying her and doing something dangerous. Being a monarch, she’s incredibly patient, but expressly going against her words and putting themselves in harms way will really get her riled up.
🥩 - what’s your character’s diet like? what are their favorite and least favorite foods?: Scorchstone
Meat! Mans is,,, BIG!! He needs lots of protein to keep them muscles. His favorite though is rabbit. He really likes it for their pelts, though. He’s a sucker for soft things, and it makes for great nest lining. Least favorite? Birds. They take way too long to pluck, and often times they’re pretty small. He’d rather have less tedious prey, thank you very much.
🧸 - does your character have a specific object that soothes them?: Garclaw
Technically not yet- but he WILL be swapping gifts with a certain someone sometime soon 👀 but in the meantime! He is quite the little treasure hunter- mostly collecting shells, cool rocks, or pearls if he’s lucky (those being his favorite), but he doesn’t like to hoard them. He’ll usually leave them in easier places for others to find, or give the especially cool ones to friends. So if you DO earn the coveted titled of “Friend”, you can be sure to expect little gifts to pop up suddenly in your nest randomly.
🎨 - does your character have a unique skill that sets them apart from others?: Flaxfrost
Mans is very keen on observation. He likes to make a guessing game of cats he comes in contact with about what they’re like based on their physicality and appearance. This does make him judgmental at the worst of times, though, or incredibly kind at the best as he’s sure to notice something you never even noticed about yourself.
🎵 - what kind of music would your character listen to? do you have any playlists for them?: Tranquil Rainforest
Based on their name alone- I’m sure you can make a good guess! My thoughts are mostly leaning towards otherworldly, fae-like sounds. Something calm and lulling. Folk as well! Plus, I often associate them with the sound of a dusty old piano and rain, so adding those in is a bonus, haha!
