Blue Lions Translation Chapter 1

Hey, everyone. Since I am currently on holiday and finally finished my latin exam, I decided to start up something fun for us to look at. I’ll make it my mission to go through the Japanese script for the Blue Lions route and translate it as I go. May it reveal neat things small and big.

Can’t promise I will actually make it through it all, but I’ll definitely try my best.

Before we go, I’d like to mention that I am without income this month and would appreciate any bit of help you can give me through my ko-fi account. Times are rough.

My comments in italics

Some small things to note as we start out in White Clouds. I only plan on translating the Blue Lion specific lines first. It just gives me less text to work through all at once. If my stamina lasts long enough, I might go back at a later point and do a translation of all the ‘neutral’ dialogue in between.

Chapter Dialogue

First meeting with the Blue Lions

アネット: えっ、新しい先生って、まさか……あわわ、あたし、友達みたいに話しかけちゃって……▼ 同い年くらいに見えたから、つい……！すみません、気をつけますっ！！▼

Annette: Eh, you mean the new teacher is... no way.. ahh. And I even talked to you like we were friends. ▼ You look like you are my age so... I am so sorry, I will be careful from now on!! ▼

[選択:構わない]

[Choose: I don't care]

アネット: そ、そんなこと言われても……。

Annette: Even if you say so...

ディミトリ: ええ、こちらの気が済みません。

Dimitri: Yes, it is on us to apologize.

シルヴァン: 先生が言うんだし、いいんじゃないですか？つーか、それを言ったらですよ、殿下……▼ そもそも、俺たちがあんたにこんな口を利いてるのだって、不敬もいいとこでしょ。▼

Sylvain: But the Professor said they don't care, so it's fine, right? And anyway, if we are already on the topic, your highness.. ▼ Since we've been talking to you so casually all along, a little disrespect can’t be that bad. ▼

ディミトリ: いや、ここは王国ではないんだし、それとこれとはまた別の話で……▼ ……だがまあ、先生がそれでいいならありがたくその厚意に甘えるとしようか。▼

Dimitri: No, this isn't the kingdom, so how we talk there is completely unrelated to how we talk here... ▼ However, if it is alright with the Professor, we shall take them up on their offer gratefully. ▼

イングリット: あの、ですが私には…… 染みついた癖というのは、どうにも……。▼

Ingrid: Um, I myself... I am not sure if I can go against my manners like that.. ▼

メルセデ��: 難しいなら、無理することないわよ～。ね、先生もそれでいいでしょう？▼

Mercedes: No need to force it, if it's difficult for you~. I am sure that's fine with you too, Professor? ▼

Byleth nods

[If Byleth is female]

シルヴァン: 先生は器がでかいなあ、素敵だ！あっ、結婚を前提に、俺とお茶でも……

Sylvain: The professor has such a big heart, how wonderful! Ah, we should discuss marriage sometime over a cup of tea and-...

I had to look up what 器がでかいなあ means. Literally it would be more like “Your vessel is big” and I suspected something sleazy at first, but it seems Sylvain is innocent.. this time.

フェリクス:……待て、シルヴァン。こいつには用がある。▼

Felix: … Wait, Sylvain. I need something from her.

フェリクス……そういえば、先ほどお前に言ったな。剣を交える日を楽しみにしている、と。▼

Felix: … Anyway. You told me before, right? About looking forward to the day we cross swords.

Whoever uploaded the Japanese script speculated this line only shows up if you talked to him during exploration before. Which would make more sense. The localization rephrases it as “I’ve heard of you and wanna fight” which either means the above showed up regardless, potentially causing confusion for Japanese players who skipped talking to him, or the localization made it non-conditional. I’ll have to boot up my game at some point to check.

フェリクス: 後で訓練場に来い。まずはお前の腕を見せてもらいたい。▼

Felix: Come to the training hall after this. First things first, I want you to show me your skill.

ディミトリ: 抜け駆けとは感心しないな、フェリクス。その試合、是非俺も交ぜてくれ。▼

Dimitri: It wouldn't be right for you get a headstart, Felix. Please let me partake in that match as well.

English!Dimitri just comments that Felix is right to the point. But I like him teasing a bit here.

Also Dimitri used much more polite language before this, but has now switched to a more casual style, like promised.

フェリクス:……チッ。▼

Felix: … Tch.

アッシュ: あ、あのっ！　後学のため、僕も見学させていただきたいんですが！▼

Ashe: H- Hey! I would also like to observe the occasion for future reference.

ディミトリ: アッシュ。見るだけと言わず、お前も加わればいいだろう。▼

Dimitri: Ashe, leaving out the bit about observation, it would definitely be good for you to join as well.

メルセデス; ふふっ、怪我した時は私に言ってね～。ちょっとした傷なら、すぐに看てあげるわ。▼

Mercedes: Hehe, just tell me if you get hurt. I'll look after any scratch immediately.

ドゥドゥー:……殿下。あまり羽目を外され過ぎぬよう。▼

Dedue: … Your highness. Please do not overextend yourself.

ディミトリ: お前は心配性だな、ドゥドゥー。大丈夫、自重はするさ。▼

Dimitri: You really are a worrywart, Dedue. It's alright, I'll take care.

シルヴァン: なあ……親睦を深めるのに剣を交えるって、何か根本的に間違ってると思うんだけど？▼

Sylvain: Hey... doesn’t anyone think there’s something seriously wrong with deepening our bonds by swinging swords at each other?

イングリット: あら、そうかしら。そういうことなら、あなただけ教室で留守番してる？▼

Ingrid: My, is that so? In that case, I suppose you'll stay behind and watch the classroom for us?

シルヴァン: イングリット……お前さあ、ほんっと俺に対して手厳しいよなあ……。▼

Sylvain: Ingrid... you are always so harsh when it comes to me...

ディミトリ: ……先生。青獅子の学級ルーヴェンクラッセは、見てのとおり騒がしい学級だ。▼ いろいろと苦労をかけるかもしれないが、これから１年、よろしく頼む。▼

Dimitri: Professor. As you can see, the Blue Lions are a very boisterous class. ▼ We might cause you a lot of trouble, but we'll be counting on your for coming year. ▼

Exploration

Again, sticking only to the Blue Lions for this one and leaving out the lines they have when recruited or when you are in a another house for now.

[Annette]

Speech Bubble: I could swear I saw him...

アネット: こんにちは、先生。あの、ちょっと質問があるんですけど……。▼ あたしと同じ色の髪の毛で、しかめっ面の、暗ーい雰囲気のおじさん、知りませんか？▼

Annette: Hello, Professor. Um, I have a question for you... ▼ Do you know an older man whose hair the same colour as mine, with a frown on his face and surrounded by a gloomy aura? ▼

[選択:人捜し？]

[Choose: Are you looking for someone?] +Support with Annette

アネット: ……はい。ちょっと、事情があって……。もし見かけたら、教えてくださいね！▼

Annette: Yeah... There's a bit of a situation... Please tell me, if you see him, okay?

[選択:知らない]

[Choose: I don't know]

アネット: やっぱり、そうですよね……。ごめんなさい、変なこと聞いちゃって！▼

Anette: I knew it... I'm sorry for making you listen to such a weird question.

[Dimitri]

ディミトリ: 近く、学級対抗戦が催されるそうだな。訓練を怠らないようにしなければ。▼ 先生は、俺たち生徒個人の能力を把握し、的確な指導をしてやってほしい。▼ 実りある戦いにするのはもちろんだが、戦うからには勝ちたいだろ、先生。▼ 大修道院は初めてだと言っていたな。折角だ、俺から簡単に案内させてもらおう。▼

Dimitri: We will soon be holding a mock battle against the other classes. We mustn't neglect our training. ▼ I wish for you to ascertain each students individual abilities and instruct us precisely. ▼ It's sure to be a rewarding experience either way, but of course I want to win, Professor. ▼ You mentioned this was your first time at the monestary. In that case I shall give you some basic information on it. ▼

ディミトリ: 大修道院内の施設は、士官学校の生徒や教師にも利用が許可されている。▼ 例えば、食堂では他の者と食事を共にでき、訓練場では一対一の稽古ができる。▼ ここで生活する人々の話に耳を傾けながら大修道院内を散策してみるといい。▼

Dimitri: The facilities inside the monastery are permitted to be used by all the students and teachers. ▼ For instance, you can go to the dining hall to enjoy a meal with others, or go to the training hall to have one-on-one matches. ▼ It would be a good idea to lend an ear to what the people living here have to say, while you wander through the monastery. ▼

ディミトリ: 大修道院の各所には「掲示板」がある。先生は、見たことがあるか？▼ 掲示板には、各所からの依頼や門前にある市場の情報が掲示されている。▼ こういった依頼に応えることで、使えるようになる施設もあったと思う。▼ 掲示板の情報は、頻繁に更新される。毎節、一度は確認しておいたほうがいい。▼

Dimitri: There are various bulletin boards throughout the monastery. Have you seen them, professor? ▼ On the boards you'll find requests from various places posted, as well as information on the market in front of the gates. ▼ By responding to these requests, I think you will eventually be able to use more facilities. ▼ The information of the board gets updated frequently. It would be best to check them whenever you have the chance. ▼

ディミトリ: 当然のことではあるが、何の施設にしろ利用すると相応の時間がかかる。▼ 一日を無駄にしてしまわないよう、計画立てて行動した方が良いだろうな。▼

Dimitri: Although this should be obvious, an appropriate amount of time passes as you use each facility. ▼ It would be best to carefully consider your activities, so that you do not let an entire day go to waste. ▼

ディミトリ: この士官学校の教師は、極めて高い水準の指導力を求められる。▼ 生徒だけでなく教師も、分野を超えた知識を習得し、研鑽に励まなければならない。▼

Dimitri: The professors at the monastery are expected to meet exceedingly high standards of leadership. ▼ So they too, not just their student, must strive to acquire knowledge outside their field and study diligently. ▼

[Dedue]

ドゥドゥー: 殿下はお前を信頼すると仰った。ならば、おれがお前を信じない理由はない。▼ お前が殿下に刃を向けるというなら、話は別だがな。▼

Dedue: His Highness told me he trusts you. Therefore, I have no reason not to believe you. ▼ If you ever turn your blade against him, it will be a different story however. ▼

[Sylvain]

[If Byleth is male]

シルヴァン: よう、先生。暇してるんなら、一緒に街にでも出ませんか？▼ まだ見ぬ美女を捜しに……。……いや。冗談です。そんな目で見ないでください。▼

Sylvain: Hey, Professor. If you are free, would you care to go into town with me? ▼ I'm still looking for beauties I haven't seen yet and... No. I was joking. Please don't look at me like that. ▼

[If Byleth is female]

シルヴァン: よう、先生。暇してるんなら、一緒に街にでも出ませんか？▼ 美味い飯を出す宿場を見つけたんですよ。これは、先生を誘うしかないと思いまして！▼

Sylvain: Hey, Professor. If you are free, would you care to go into town with me? ▼ I found an inn that serves the most amazing food. I feel like I just have to take you there! ▼

[Felix]

Speech Bubble: ...It's you.

フェリクス: ……何か用か。▼

Felix: … Need something?

[選択:剣の相手を]

[Choose: Spar with me] +Support with Felix

フェリクス: ……ふ、面白い。▼

Felix: .... Heh, interesting.

English has him explain he doesn’t have time right now. Presumably because nothing happens after this. lol

[選択:用はない]

[Choose: It's nothing]

フェリクス: なら、さっさとそこをどけ。目障りだ。▼

Felix: Then get out of my way. You are blocking the view.

Felix is extra special rude here, since you can also translate the second line to calling you an eyesore.

[Ashe]

アッシュ: あ、先生も植物を見に来たんですか？凄いですよね、ここの温室は。▼ 王国では見たこともないような薬草や、珍しい花がたくさん植えられているんです。▼

Ashe: Ah, did you come to look at the plants too, Professor? This greenhouse really is amazing. ▼ They are planting all sorts of vegetables I haven't seen in the kingdom before, and a lot of strange flowers too. ▼

[選択:あまり興味が……]

[Choose: I'm not really interested..]

アッシュ: あはは、そうですよね……僕も、教わるまで植物なんて全部同じだと思ってましたから。▼

Ashe: Haha, yeah before I was taught about them, plants all seemed the same to me too.

[選択: 詳しいの？]

[Choose: Are you well informed?]

アッシュ: 僕の養父が詳しいんです。見分け方や、調薬なんかも教えてもらいました。▼

Ashe: My adoptive father is the one who is well informed. He taught me how to tell the plants apart and care for them. ▼

[Continuing]

アッシュ: 先生も、気が向いた時に花を眺めてみるのがいいと思います。楽しいですよ。▼

Ashe: I think it would be a good idea to look at the flowers whenever you can, Professor. It's a lot of fun.

[Mercedes]

メルセデス: この士官学校に来る前はね～、王都で、魔道の学校に通っていたの。▼ アン……ええと、アネットのことよ。アンとは、そこで仲良くなって……▼ あ、ローレンツもいたんだったかしら？▼ 少し年上の私にも親しくしてくれるアンは私にとって、かけがえのない親友なの～。▼

Mercedes: You see, before coming to the academy~, I attended the school of sorcery in the capital. ▼ Ann..- I'm talking about Annette. I got to know Ann at that place.... ▼ Ah, I think Lorenz also attended? ▼ Although I am a bit older than her, Ann got pretty close to me, so I consider her an irreplacable and dearest friend of mine~. ▼

[Ingrid]

イングリット: 青獅子の学級ルーヴェンクラッセの名は、ファーガス神聖王国初代国王の尊称から取られているんです。▼ 青き外衣を翻す“獅子王”ルーグ様。多くの騎士道物語に活躍が描かれています。▼ 書庫には、いろいろな書物があるはずです。もちろん王国史や、騎士道物語も。▼ 是非、読んでみてください。きっと新たな発見があるでしょうから。▼

Ingrid: The Blue Lion's name derives from the honorary title of the first king of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. ▼ The „Lion King“ Loog, always garbed in blue. His deeds have been immortalized in various chivalric tales. ▼ The library ought to have many books about him. Historic accounts as well as chivalric tales of course. ▼ Please read them if you get the chance. I am sure it would give you a new perspective. ▼

Dimitri: It is finally time for the mock battle. Haha, I am eager to put my skills to the test. How about you, Professor?

ディミトリ: 良かった。先生の采配、期待してるよ。俺たちも、勝利のために力を尽くそう。▼

Dimitri: I am glad to hear it. I have high hopes for your command, Professor. We shall also give everything for the sake of victory.

[Choose: „I wonder if we can win“]

There’s nothing listed in the script. I wonder if it’s a gap. Again, something to check for later.

[Continuing]

ディミトリ: 大丈夫だ。手強い相手かもしれないが、きっと勝てる。▼

Dimitri: It's all right. Our opponents may be difficult, but we will surely win.

クロード: やあ、お二人さん。作戦会議かい？　俺たちも交ぜてくれよ。▼

Claude: Hey, you two. Having a stragey meeting? Please let us join in too.

ディミトリ: 勘弁してくれ、手の内は隠すものだろ。相手が強敵なら、尚更だ。▼

Dimitri: Spare me, Claude. It's only natural to keep our hand concealed, isn't it? Even moreso if the opponent is so formidable.

クロード: そりゃあ光栄。ならば期待に応えて、俺たちも奇策を用意しておかないと、なあ？▼

Claude: Now that's an honour. To live up to such expectations, should we come up with some plans of our own, or..?

エーデルガルト: ええ、貴方たちがどんな手で来ようとも、それを上回る戦術で打ち破ってあげる。▼

Edelgard: That's right, no matter what you may come up with, we shall tear it down with superior tactics.

ディミトリ: いや、張り切るのはいいが……。あまり、無茶をしないようにな。▼

Dimitri: Uh, it's nice to see you so invested... Just don't overdo it, okay?

エーデルガルト: へえ。敵の心配をするなんて、随分と余裕があるようね、ディミトリ。▼

Edelgard: Huh, you must feel pretty confident to be worrying about your enemies, Dimitri.

クロード: おやおや戦いはまだだってのに、そんなに熱くなって……我が学級は楽をできそうだ。

Claude: My my, the battle hasn't even started and you are already fired up like that... My class should have an easy time of it.

ディミトリ: そういうつもりじゃ……いや、悪かったよ。何はともあれ、実りある戦いにしよう。▼

Dimitri: That's not what I-... No, I am sorry. Whatever happens, let us make it a rewarding experience.

エーデルガルト: ふふ、それはこちらも同じよ。そうでしょう？▼

Edelgard: Hehe, the sentiment is mutual. Isn't that right?

Okay, so this line is skipped entirely in the English script and it is Dimitri who asks the question. Maybe because it does sound weird that Edelgard would single out Byleth for this when they are on opposing sides, but I can’t be sure. Would need to find a playthrough of the Japanese version to confirm.

[選択:お手柔らかに]

[Choose: Please go easy on us]

クロード: おっと、先生の本心はわかってるんだ。負ける気はないって顔に書いてある。▼

Claude: Now just wait, I can tell how you really feel, professor. Your face has „We won't lose“ written all over it.

[選択: 負ける気はない]

[Choose: We won't lose]

エーデルガルト: そう。貴方がそう言うのなら、手を抜いてあげる必要はなさそうね。▼

Edelgard: I see. If you say so, there is no need to hold ourselves back.

[Continuing]

マヌエラ: あらあら、みんな揃ってお喋りかしら？すっかり仲良くなったようね。▼

Manuela: My my, you've already gathered for a nice little chat, haven't you? You seem to get along perfectly well.

ハンネマン: 君たちが親睦を深めるのは大変結構だが、そろそろ作戦会議の時間だ。▼

Hanneman: Although deepening your bonds with each other is quite animportant matter, it's time for the mock battle to begin.

クロード: もうそんな時間か。それじゃ、お二人さん。また後でな。▼

Claude: It is already? In that case, I'll be seeing you two later.

エーデルガルト: 貴方たちの力量、確かめさせてもらうわ。▼

Edelgard: I shall determine your abilities.

Before the Battle

ディミトリ]さて、そろそろ開戦の刻限か……。勝敗は先生の指揮次第だ、頼んだぞ。▼

Dimitri: Now then, it's about time for the battle to begin... The outcome depends on your orders, Professor. We are counting on you.

I skipped most of Jeralt’s dialogue cause it’s mostly the same every route.

[Turn one]

ローレンツ: クロード、お前の浅知恵など必要ない。僕とイグナーツ君で敵の出鼻を挫いてやる。▼

Lorenz: Claude, your shallow tactic won't be necessary. Myself and Ignatz are going to hinder the enemy's approach.

イグナーツ: ええっ、ボク！？まだ心の準備ができてませんよお……▼

Ignatz: U-uh, me!? I haven't mentally prepared yet...

English simplified this to “I’m not ready yet”, which is also correct, but it sounds a bit more adorable in Japanese.

クロード: やれやれ……向こうの先生を侮ってないか？油断すると痛い目に遭うと思うがなあ……。▼

Claude: Oh boy... are you making light of the professor we’re facing? If you're too careless, I think you'll be in for a painful experience...

エーデルガルト: ドロテア、貴方も前に出てくれる？敵を中央に誘い出したいの。▼

Edelgard: Dorothea, can you go ahead as well? I want to lure the enemy into our midst.

ドロテア: 了解、エーデルちゃん。私にお任せあれ。▼

Dorothea: Understood, Edel-chan. Leave it to me.

エーデルガルト: フェルディナント、ヒューベルト。二人は敵が来たら足止めを……機を窺うわ。▼

Edelgard: Ferdinand, Hubert. If the enemies approach, you two will stop-.... wait for your chance.

Edelgard has a weird pause in this sentence in Japanese. Like she is reconsidering something maybe?

フェルディナント: ふっ、任せてくれたまえ。私一人でも役不足なくらいだとも！▼

Ferdinand: Hah, simply leave it to me. I’d say this is too simple a task, even were I alone.

ヒューベルト: くくく……貴殿一人では力不足ゆえ、主は私の名も挙げたのですよ。▼

Hubert: Hehehe... It is because of your own lack of skill, that my lady brought up my name as well.

Hubert has the most stereotypical evil anime villain laugh of all time. The only reason I didn’t translate it as “Muahaha” is because it doesn’t flow as well in English.

[Defeating Lorenz]

ローレンツ: チッ、この僕が負けるなんて……。模擬戦とはいえ腹立たしい……！▼

Lorenz: Tch.. To think I could be defeated... Even for a mock battle, this is most irritating.

This is cut down a bit in English

[Defeating Ignatz]

イグナーツ: あはは、やられちゃいました……。新しい先生の指揮、流石だなあ。▼

Ignatz: Hahaha, you got me... The new teacher's commands are really something.

[Defeating Hilda]

ヒルダ: もー！　あたしなんて、放っといてくれればいいのにー！▼

Hilda: Come on! You could have just left little old me alone, you know!

[Defeating Hubert]

ヒューベルト: むう……新任の教師の力の一端を、見られただけで良しとしましょうか。▼

Hubert: Well... I suppose I'll have to be satisfied with simply having observed the new teachers strengths well enough.

[Defeating Ferdinand]

フェルディナント: エーギル家の嫡子たる私がそんな…… くっ、もっと鍛錬しなければ……！▼

Ferdinand: To think this could happen to a son of House Aegir... ugh, I'll have to train more.

[Defeating Dorothea]

ドロテア: あら……新しい先生は、随分なやり手みたいですねえ。▼

Dorothea: Oh my... the new professor seems quite capable.

[After defeating the other Golden Deer]

クロード: やってくれるね、先生。これは本気でかからないとな……！▼

Claude: You did well, professor. I'll need to take it seriously from here..!

[If Edelgard gets close before the Golden Deer are dealt with]

クロード: ２つの学級と同時に戦おうってのか？へえ、たいした自信だな。▼

Claude: You going to fight two classes at once? Heh, that's some self-confidence you got there.

エーデルガルト: 勝機が見えたわ……。黒鷲の学級アドラークラッセ！　一気に畳みかけなさい！▼

Edelgard: I've spotted my chance... Black Eagles, go forth as one!

[If Claude gets close]

クロード: この森を利用して敵を迎え撃つぞ。みんな、援護してくれ！▼

Claude: We'll attack our enemies using these woods as cover. Everyone, back me up!

[Approaching Claude by going around the woods]

クロード: おっと、回り込んできやがったか……。こりゃ強引に迎え撃つしか手はないな。▼

Claude: Oops, you got around... Looks like I'll have to use brute force.

[Byleth vs. Claude]

クロード: 俺は戦術はともかく戦闘はからきしなんだ。だから手加減してくれよ、先生。▼

Claude: Aside from tactics, I'm not much for the battlefield. So please go easy on me, Professor.

Byleth: ….

クロード: 真顔で頷かれると困るが……。冗談ってのは、わかってるよな？

Claude: Going along with such a serious expression is quite unsettling... You do know that was joke, right?

[Dimitri vs. Claude]

クロード:……なあ、王子様。お前、実はエーデルガルトに惚れてるんじゃないか？▼

Claude: … Hey, Prince. You're actually pretty sweet on Edelgard, aren't you?

ディミトリ: 無駄口を叩くのはやめておけ、クロード。隙だらけだぞ。▼

Dimitri: Stop with the idle chatter, Claude. It leaves you wide open.

クロード: おっと、その落ち着きっぷりは外れか。動揺を誘ったつもりが、残念、残念。▼

Claude: Oops, that didn't phase you at all. I was trying to make you slip up, what a shame.

[Defeating Claude with other Golden Deer still around]

クロード: あらら、やられちまったか……。他の奴らの活躍に期待するしかないな。▼

Claude: Tsk tsk, you got me, huh... Looks like all I can do is put my faith in the other's efforts.

[Defeating Claude after the other Golden Deer]

クロード: おっと……油断しすぎたか。金鹿の学級は、これで敗退だな。

Claude: Oh... seems like I was careless. Looks like this is it for the Golden Deer.

[Defeating Hanneman]

ハンネマン: 実戦を積んだ者の指揮は、流石に違うな。我輩が手も足も出なかったよ。▼

Hanneman: As expected, having actual experience with commanding in battle really does make a difference. I couldn't hope to measure up.

That's nice, the barracuda is one of popular fishes having as sashimi, grilled, steamed, fried and so on. My landlady haven't had so much interest, but she also said it was yummy and she's going to use for her own dishes. We hope you can find good barracudas and other nice fishes in the convinient market!

Spirit Tracks Translation Comparison: Zelda’s Spirit

This will be a comparison of the original Japanese version and the US English localized version.

Specifically, this will cover the cutscenes in which Link follows and encounters the spirit of Princess Zelda.

You can also watch these scenes for yourself in English and Japanese. If you want, you can check out the EU English version, too.

For the comparison, the usual points apply:

Bolded is the original Japanese text, for the reference.

Bolded and italicized is my translation.

Italicized is the official NOA translation.

A (number) indicates that I have a specific comment to make on that part in the translation notes.

As you read this, please keep in mind that with translations like these, it’s important not to focus on the exact literal wordings, since there is no single “correct answer” when it comes to translations.

Rather than that, consider the actual information that is being conveyed, in which way, and why.

Characters in this part who had their names changed between versions:

Cirokuni = Alfonzo, Kimaroki = Cole

He said the barrier was vanishing... but what is that supposed to mean?

He said something about the Spirit Tracks vanishing.

What did he mean by that?

Zelda:

I heard that it once belonged to my ancestor, the one who migrated to this land.

It originally belonged to one of my ancestors,

the one who founded this kingdom.

Zelda:

…わたしの大事な宝物なんです

...It is my greatest treasure.

リンク今わたしはこれを持つことも出来ません

Right now, I cannot even hold it, Link.

I can't carry it while I'm in this state, as you can see.

Zelda:

Translation Notes:

What I translated as “Kimaroki and the other one” is キマロキ達/Kimaroki-tachi in Japanese. Adding the suffix 達/-tachi essentially means “that person as well as one or more additional people”. In the context here, I felt it most likely referred to just Cole and Byrne, which is why I translated it the way I did.

What I translated as “floating” here is 浮ける/ukeru in Japanese, which can refer to floating in the sense of being light, like when levitating, or floating on water, similar to the English word.

Comparisons & Thoughts:

The localized dialogue in this part is overall pretty close to the original version, and well-written as usual.

But there are still several aspects I want to point out here, though some of them are more about how prior changes alter the implications here.

I want to start with Zelda’s flute.

We don’t learn the full story behind it until later, but I still want to go over it here, since this is the point in the game where it’s first named.

In both versions, receiving this flute is significant, since Link will use it throughout his adventure, but it’s especially important in the Japanese version.

Like I mentioned in the introduction of this comparison series, the Japanese name of this game is 大地の汽笛/Daichi no Kiteki, meaning “Steam Whistle of the Land”, which ties directly into the name of this instrument, 大地の笛/Daichi no Fue, meaning the “Flute of the Land”.

So, in the Japanese version, we are finally receiving the instrument which the game is partially named for, so it’s a moment not unlike receiving the Ocarina of Time or the Wind Waker in their respective games.

In the English version, the name Spirit Flute does relate to the game title Spirit Tracks, but since this version overall has plenty of things that have “Spirit” in their name, the flute itself doesn’t stand out as being particularly special.

In Japanese, the flute is completely unique with its “of the Land” descriptor.

I also want to explain in more detail what the name “Flute of the Land” actually means.

The “Land” part of this name, is 大地/daichi in Japanese, which could also be translated as “earth” or “ground”. But in this case, it’s referring to “the Land”, as in the entire land the game takes place in.

In a way, the flute symbolizes this land itself. As we learn later, it used to belong to the sage of the tower at the center of the land, and the colors of its pipes reflect those of the individual regions: Forest, Snow, Ocean, Fire, Sand, and even Darkness.

We will also learn later that this flute having been entrusted to Zelda’s family was done so under the condition that they would promise to protect the land.

With this flute, as well as the game’s title, and the overall dialogue in it, the Japanese version places more importance on the actual land.

This ties in with the history of its native people and pantheon, plus the divine servants and their sacred instruments, which still continue their ancient traditions and duties, playing important roles in the narrative.

In turn, Zelda and Link, being representative of the Hyrulean people, prove themselves worthy and capable of continuing this legacy over the course of the story.

These are elements which are still present in the English version, but a few general changes like this one make them slightly less prominent.

The English version focuses on a general “Spirit”-themed branding, though I feel this was done for marketing purposes, rather than censorship or anything.

It’s minor, but I want to mention this change of what one of the guards says:

Frankly, I’m not that fond of wide open spaces like this one here.

Mostly because I think it’s another neat example of completely rewriting the original line, but still conveying its meaning.

It’s just this optional line from a guard, but maybe that’s why it kinda stood out to me.

After Link confirms to Zelda that he can see her, the scene cuts to a shot of just the room’s window, which slowly zooms out.

In the Japanese version, Zelda’s next line starts with her saying “…I see.”

Combined with the framing, this tells us that there was probably a tiny skip in time, during which Link told Zelda about the current situation, particularly how Alfonzo is completely out of commission now.

The English version omits this line, and thus the implication, but it could be another oversight from lack of context.

It’s a minor difference, but it explains how Zelda later knows about the extent of Alfonzo’s injuries, compared to the mostly unscathed Link.

I’ve already talked about terms that the Japanese versions of Zelda games generally use when referring to the demonic, and also how the respective English versions of Zelda games generally go for “monster” rather than “demon” when adapting those.

And in that same vein, you’ll notice the English version of this game right here seems to avoid calling Cole a demon directly, and doesn’t even go as far as calling him a monster in this particular part.

Instead, phrasings like “evil” and “the dark forces” are used instead.

It’s strange, because they did finally use the term “Demon King” in the English version of this game, but for some reason they avoid most other instances of demonic aspects being mentioned.

It could be they were only using different phrasings for the sake of sounding natural, and it coincidentally ended up like this, but I can’t say for sure.

I won’t bring this up every time there is an example of it, but you can keep an eye out for yourselves whenever something like “demons” comes up in Japanese, and see how the English version handles those instances.

In the Japanese version, Zelda says she’s certain that Cole and co. are also involved with the disappearing of the train tracks, in addition to what happened to the tower.

While she’s later proven to be right, it’s still supposed to be speculation on her part here.

In the English version, Zelda instead states that Cole and co. made the tracks disappear like it’s a confirmed fact.

Cole did mention that the tracks disappearing was something beneficial to their plans in English, but he technically didn’t say that they were the ones behind it.

Also, a minor detail is that in English, “Cole and his cronies” is used as the translation for キマロキ達/Kimaroki-tachi.

This is a possible way to translate this, but at this point we haven’t really been given any indication that there are any more people besides just Cole and Byrne involved, so it’s more likely Zelda was supposed to be referring to just those two in Japanese.

In both versions, Zelda talks primarily about Cole in this cutscene, rather than Byrne.

So there isn’t really a change here, But the context of previous scenes slightly changes the implications.

In the English version, Cole has acted as the primary antagonist so far.

So, there is nothing unusual about Zelda speaking of him the way she does here.

However, in the Japanese version, Cole had previously acted subservient to Byrne, referring to him as “master”. And Link earlier described Cole as a “minion” to Teacher.

Despite that, Zelda still focuses on Cole here, showing that from her perspective, he is the more prominent antagonistic force, likely because of their history.

When Zelda shows her flute to Link, the English version adds a line of her saying she’s about to show him something.

This was probably done to make the transition flow better, which is understandable.

In the Japanese version, Zelda says that her ancestor “migrated to this land”, whereas in the English version she says her ancestor “founded this kingdom”.

Both are true, but note again how the Japanese version puts a bit more focus on the actual land itself, rather than the current kingdom in it.

Also, it’s not important just yet, but over the course of the game, there will be occasional mentions of Zelda’s ancestor, or ご先祖様/gosenzo-sama in Japanese.

In the Japanese version, any mention of this almost exclusively refers to one specific ancestor of hers: Tetra.

But in the English version, this sometimes gets translated more vaguely as “ancestors”, making the references to Tetra more ambiguous.

So keep that in mind.

And finally, when they are about to leave, the Japanese version has Zelda say “I will follow you in this form”, referring to the small ball of light form she turns into while travelling.

The English version just has her say “I will travel alongside you“, maybe because they didn’t realize what she meant by “this form”, considering they probably didn’t get to see the footage.

As I said, the dialogue in this part is pretty close and well-written.

Almost all the notable differences here are the results of prior changes or possible lack of context for the translators.

I can’t help but wonder how this script would’ve turned out under different circumstances?

The biggest change for me here is definitely the name of the flute and how it ties into the name of the game, as well as the story, because it’s likely to shift the perspective of the player.

Twitterで散々告知していた、「軽音サークルOB(と現役)が集まって、『平成(OO年)といえばコレ』な曲を各々30曲ほど持ち寄り、平成を彩った名曲を振り返ることで平成という時代を総括する会」の第一回を、先日8/11の夜に執り行いました。その時に流した曲のリストが出来上がったので、会の模様を録音していた駄弁りデータを参照しつつ、ぼく視点で改めてコメントをつけてこの会の様子を残したいと思います。一応ブログ末に録音したmp3を詰めた泥箱のリンクを貼るつもりではいますが、会議が6時間を超える長丁場になってしまったのでさすがにそれを全部聞く暇人はこの世に存在しないだろうということで、文章にまとめた方がまだ追体験しやすいだろう、というのがこのブログ執筆の目的です。録音データの書き起こし、というわけではないですが、脱線や菓子の受け渡しみたいな雑音が入ってるよりはむしろこの方がいいかと。勿論このブログ形式にしてしまうことで、筆者のバイアスがかなりかかってしまうことは重々承知してはいますが。

というわけで今回集まったメンバーから紹介。・ぷれしお　今回の首謀者。ブリットポップやシューゲイザーが専門ながら、J-popをほとんど網羅している平成の申し子。今回は「平成各年のオリコンシングルチャートTOP100を参照しつつ」「取り上げるのは1アーティスト1曲で被らないように」30曲を持ち込み、個人の思い出ではなく売上データからの分析的な検証を試みます。・まえぴ　ぷれしおの同期。高校時代はジャズピアノを、大学軽音サークルではベースに持ち替えて精力的に活動したマルチプレイヤー。今回は「これぞ平成」な懐メロを多数用意してくれました。・伊38　筆者。賑やかし役。このブログに辿り着く人ならぼくの趣味はわかってると思うので割愛しますが、基本的に「他の人が持ってこなさそうな曲」をセレクト。このブログ内での「平成の語り」はぼく視点によるものなので文責はぼくにありコメントはぼく宛でお願いします。・各方面　軽音サークルの大先輩。筆者より10歳くらい上なのかな……？今回は各年にハマった音楽を「表プレイリスト」「裏プレイリスト」にまとめ、交互に触れていくことで時代を多角的に検証します。年長者として、10代の多感な時期を平成と共に過ごした年代としての語り口に期待。・かっしー　軽音サークルの後輩。筆者より4歳くらい下。激動の平成音楽シーンにおいて数歳の差でいかに音楽体験が異なるのか。年少者からの視点が必要だとして今回参加。

わかりづらいですが、一人が一気にプレゼンすると平成30年を一息に駆け抜けてしまうので、「平成をだいたい10年ごとに分け、それぞれの年代で自身が聞いていた曲を5人がそれぞれプレゼン、それを3セット」という形式を今回採用しました。つまり上記プレイリストで誰がどの曲を持ち込んだかは結構ばらけています。その辺はぼくのこれからの語りで解説・補完していければと。

それでは前置きが大変長くなりました、適宜コメントをつけつつ、各曲を紹介し平成を振り返る回を振り返りたいと思います。

　第一部、平成初期(平成元年～10年くらい) まずは主催ぷれしおから10曲ほど。開幕はプリプリのダイアモンド。昭和じゃねえんだコレ、と思うのはぼくがまだ生まれてないからか。開幕にふさわしい明るいナンバー。たまのさよなら人類。平成2年売上トップ10てマジ？小田和正。ドラマから有名ですからね。浜田省吾。「平成4年は売上トップにビッグネームが並ぶので、(彼の課したレギュレーション上)被りを避けるために」とのこと。 ZARDは平成初期では外せないですね。というか某番組のおかげで今も通用してますし。ミスチルからはイノセントワールド。この後もスマッシュヒットが続きますが、その後のヒット曲の紹介のためにここでミスチルのカードを切ることに。しかしこれ「百万枚売れるメロが書けた！」と桜井が言うだけありますね、ラスサビからの畳みかける歌詞もエモ。 B'zもここで紹介。しかしこのLOVE PHANTOMイントロ長いな。当時は色々余裕があったというか。そして4つ打ち。と言いつつ現代の4つ打ちとはノリも扱いも違うけど。ちなみにB'zの松本氏はその時々の最新のギターの音色で録音するので、B'zファンを呼んで30年分振り返るだけで平成のギターの音色の変遷がわかるのでは感も。詳しい人を呼びたい。 SPITZ「空も飛べるはず」。これ以降ずっと何かしらの曲でランキングに居座り続けるモンスターバンド。ちなみに会ではデモ版「めざめ」を流していました。「君と出会えた奇跡が」を「君と出会えた痛みが」に変えるだけで歌詞の意味がぜんぶ変わるという、スピッツがいかに歌詞を大切に考えてるかという好例。 Kinki Kids「硝子の少年」。「20年経っても歌えるから」とごり押ししつつちゃんとスマッシュヒットを叩き出す作曲・山下達郎もすげえし、山下達郎の曲というプレッシャーを跳ね返して歌い上げたキンキもすげえ。そしてGLAY「誘惑」。この10年で出てくるミュージシャンは平成をずっと席巻し続けるあたり、平成初期10年間がいかに強かったかわかりますね。というわけでぷれしお第一ターン終了。

次はまえぴのターン。一曲目は平成元年1月11日リリースという、滑りこみで平成な美空ひばり「川の流れのように」。平成の幕開けというよりは、これで昭和が幕を下ろしたといった方がいいでしょうか。ちなみに美空ひばりは同年に亡くなっているそうで、最晩年にこのテイクをCDに吹き込める美空ひばりもバケモノだなぁという……。 BE MY BABY。つい最近流行ったけど。初出はそりゃ平成だよなと。おどるポンポコリン。そりゃ我々世代聞いてない人間いないよなぁ……。実際B.B.クイーンズはBeingの凄腕ミュージシャンを集めて出来たバンドなので演奏がすごいんですよね。めざせポケモンマスター。説明不要。チャゲアス「On Your Mark」。チャゲアスから敢えてこれを持って来るという。 MISIA、「Everything」。歌うっま……。先日のフジロックでの名演も記憶に新しく。20年以上通用し続けた歌唱力……。残テ。ヱヴァはついに平成の間に幕を下ろせなかったね……しかしこのスネアやバスドラ、メタルというかハードロック的処理の音ではないかという。ウルフルズ。優勝。バンザイ。しかし平成初期のポップス、重心が高いというかウワモノ勝負みたいなサウンド。キックやベースの低音が決め手になっていくにはまだまだ時間がかかります。もののけ姫。平成ジブリといえば外せない。あ、リストから漏れてますがここで安室奈美恵「Can you celebrate?」が流れました。平成を振り返る回をやろうと言い出したきっかけは最近話題になってた安室奈美恵からだったりします。そして1999年、椎名林檎「丸の内サディスティック」でまえぴの第一ターンは終了。20年経っても軽音サークルのスタンダードであり続ける椎名林檎嬢の強さ……。

さてお次は不肖わたくし伊38のターン。Spookey Ruben「These days are old」タイトルではピンとこないかと思いますがYoutubeで10秒再生すれば「これぞ平成」とわかるかと。小松未歩「氷の上に立つように」、倉木麻衣「Secret of my heart」。というかコナンのOPEDを30年分振り返るだけで平成を振り返られるんじゃないか？アニソンつながりで「月灯りふんわり落ちてくる夜」小川七生。オラはにんきものと迷ったけど、色々あったクレしんEDの中で唯一、かつ強烈に覚えてるのはコレ。ポケットビスケッツ・ブラックビスケッツをそれぞれ。バラエティ番組の一企画として生まれたバンドだけど、今聞いても全然聞けるくらいオケが面白いし、千秋とビビアン・スーがべらぼうに歌うまいので企画バンドの枠を超えてると思う。実際ゴールデンタイム発でヒットチャートを動かそうというわけだから金かかってるんだろうけど。つまりは当時は色んな余裕があったんだなという。ジュディマリ「そばかす」。ぼくリアルタイムではないんですが。YUKIの歌とTAKUYAのギターが圧倒的で未だに軽音サークルでコピーされるあたりね。あと最後、一曲分枠が余ったので1999年RSRのブッチャーズを軽く流しておきました。というわけで次の方へ。

大先輩各方面氏。1989年はガンヘッドのテーマから開幕。そして1989年裏リストはBoredoms。これ持ってくるのか。米米CLUB「浪漫飛行」。これも平成なんすね……で裏がHANATARASH。さっきボアダムス流したじゃないすか……ちなみに選外に人間椅子、ビョークの幼少期ジャズアルバムなど。「SAY YES」チャゲアス再登場。歌うまいしメロがつよい。そして裏はマイブラとニルヴァーナ。1991年の選外としてはレッチリも。 1992年は「それが大事」大事マンブラザーズと、裏リスト「戦え! 何を!? 人生を!」筋肉少女帯。筋少も代表曲に困るバンドですが今回はこちら。「EZ DO DANCE」。キンプリ、というかプリリズからリバイバルしてましたしね。そしてその年に裏で鳴っていたのがレディへ「Creep」。ちなみに翌年表プレイリストもTRF連チャンで「BOY MEETS GIRL」。 1995年、黒夢「SEE YOU」。90年代V系を持ってくるのはリアルタイム世代じゃないと……。裏リストはBjork「Hyperballad」。電気グルーヴ「誰だ！」そしてBloodthirsty Butchers「二月」。ちなみに1996年はLUNA SEA「STYLE」X JAPAN「DAHLIA」 L'Arc〜en〜Ciel 「True」とV系の重要シングルが立て続けに出た年という。 1997年、Cornelius「Star fruits surf rider」、裏に池田亮司「+/-」。テクノ(?)な選曲。 1998年、HIDEの死んだ年ということで「ever free」。裏リストはまたBoredomsで「Super You」。選外にBoom Boom SatellitesとかSystem of a downの1stとか、ゆら帝「3x3x3」など重要盤が並ぶ。ちなみにリストでは先に出てましたが、Boa「Duvet」もこの年。

10年振り返ったのでここでプレゼンテーター交代、後輩のかっしーのターン。ただし平成初期は生まれて間もない(!)ので、当時見ていたアニメから「ニャースのうた」(クソ名曲)、おじゃる丸「詠人」(北島三郎なんだね……)を流して終了。生まれたときにはポケモンが存在していた世代……。

　というわけで第二ターム。プレゼンテーターは一周してぷれしおに回り、平成11～20年のヒット曲を俯瞰するターン。 1999年、宇多田ヒカル「Automatic」。説明不要。ちなみに会では岡村靖幸によるトリビュート版を流していました。福山雅治「桜坂」。ちなみにこの年サザンの「TSUNAMI」も出てましたが、サザンからは翌年の「波乗りジョニー」をチョイス。しかし桑田佳祐もつよいボーカリストですよねぇ。「ピクミン愛のうた」。ゲームキューブってこの年だっけ……。そしてSMAP「世界に一つだけの花」。クソ流行りましたねぇ。槇原敬之最大のヒット作というべきか。ラルク「自由への招待」。イントロのドラムパターンが印象的だからとセレクト。トラジ・ハイジ「ファンタスティポ」。堂本剛の歌がめちゃくちゃ上手い。 TOKIO「宙船」。会では中島みゆきのテイクを流していました。このように平成中期はジャニーズがかなり時代を持っていくチャートになっているとのこと。「千の風になって」。クラシックでチャート入りしたのはこれと平原綾香「Jupiter」くらいなはず。「羞恥心」。まぁ流行りましたからね……。ぼくはTwitterでさんざ言ってますがJ-popを殺したのは島田紳助とヘキサゴンだと思っています。実際この後年にはAKBが出てくるので、J-popの印象が変化するきっかけと言えなくもないという。

そしてまえぴにバトンタッチ。日立グループこの木なんの木はいいとして。グランツーリスモより「Moon Over The Castle」。T-Square安藤まさひろ。まえぴが一番最初にやったテレビゲームだから、とのチョイス。そういや平成となるとゲーソンとともに過ごした人間とか呼んでみたい。そしてレースゲームつながりで、リッジレーサー4より「Urban Fragments」。アイマス以前のナムコのゲーム音楽はつよい。一青窈「ハナミズキ」。流れてたなぁそういや。「知恵と勇気だ！メダロット」。ポケモン出したからには出さないわけにはいかないよなぁ。筆者は普通にコロコロ派でしたがメダロットとかサイボーグクロちゃんとかはアニメ見てた気がします。覚えてないけど。 Do As Infinity「冒険者たち」。そういやこの時代、女性ボーカルとトラックメイカーの野郎、みたいなユニット多かったですよね、デイアフタートゥモローとかガールネクストドアとか。そーいや遠ーい昔どっかで、「ガールネクストドアはテレビ主導・Mステ主導で流行りを生み出せるかどうかの最後の実験だった」という言説を読んだ気がします、実際ガル��クはイマイチぱっとしないで消えたような。時代の流行りとテレビ(と時代の変化)の関係も詳しい人に語ってもらいたい。ちょっと時代遡って、「渚にまつわるエトセトラ」、「ハッチポッチファミリー」。ハッチポッチのインチキ洋楽カバー聞き直したい。森山直太朗「さくら(独唱)」。そういや平成中期はバラードも結構ヒット曲多かったですね。Youtube前の時代なんで90秒で掴む、みたいなこともなかったですし。というわけでヘラクレスオオカブト……じゃなくて「カブトムシ」aikoでまえぴの第二ターン終了。

というわけで伊38第二ターンですが、ぼくも平成10～20年は小中学生だったのでまだテレビっ子で音楽にも目覚めてない時代なんですね。スキマスイッチ「全力少年」。当時はズームイン朝で若手ミュージシャンをプッシュする謎のコーナーがあったんですよね。そういう余裕があった時代ってわけですが、スキマスイッチは頑張ってましたね。雨宮天の「奏」は神。続いてもズームイン朝枠で、nobodyknows+「ココロオドル」。ニコ動でも不動のMAD素材。というか映える声のMCを贅沢に5人も抱え、トラックも面白いし、ヒップホップブームの今再評価に値するのでは。今も活動してるか知らないけど。矢井田瞳「My Sweet Darlin'」。どこで聞いたんだっけ…… 奥井亜紀「Wind Climbing~風にあそばれて」。グルグル見てたはずなのに全然覚えてない…… 塊魂を流そうと思ってサントラ借りたら入ってなかったので仕方なく流した「塊オンザスウィング」。松崎しげるも歌うまいな……。ここまで誰も流してなかったので「Butter-Fly」かけときました。「カサブタ」と迷った。申し訳程度ですが菅野よう子も流さなきゃなぁ。ということで「Tank!」を。というか菅野よう子詳しい人に菅野よう子クロニクル解説とかしてもらっても平成振り返れそう。ていうか誰も「プラチナ」流してねえじゃねえか今回。筆者はCCさくら見てないのになんでオタクになったんだろう。 FLOW「DAYS」。エウレカも見てないのになんでオタクになったんだろう俺。「リライト」も「メリッサ」と迷った。最後は岡崎律子のために割いた枠で、メロキュア「Agape」を流して伊38第二ターン終了です。メロキュアもリアルタイムじゃ聞いてないんですけどね。なんでオタクになったんだろう俺。

というわけで各方面氏。この辺から表リストと裏リストの境が曖昧になってくる気が。 1999年。Mad Capsule Market「MIDI SURF」、Merzbow「Electric for ICC」。選外にハイスタなど。 Radiohead、KidAより「Everything in its right place」。エイフェックスツインが「ダサい」と一蹴したとかなんとか。裏は大友良英率いるGround Zero。 Daft Punk「One More Time」。が出た年にデビューしたのがDCPRG。選外はOwls、Ghost and votka、レイハラカミ、ASA-CHANG＆巡礼などなど。 2002年「Num-ami-dabutz」ナンバガ。裏はオウテカ。 Prefuse73「The End Of Biters」。裏はチルボドの4thより「Needled 24/7」。 2004年のアジカンからは「振動覚」というチョイス。裏は想い出波止場「触媒」。選外にSquarepusher「Ultravisitor」、アジカン「ソルファ」、フジファブリック・ZAZEN BOYS・東京事変それぞれの1st 。ザゼンと事変が同い年って。 Bloc Party「Like Eating Glass」。裏は吉田達也率いる高円寺百景「Rattims Friezz」。 NATSUMEN「Whole lotta summer」、裏は日本エモ界の隠し玉・倉地久美夫「あつい日本」。そしてここでヤスタカをセレクト。Capsule「Starry Sky」。ヤスタカのキックは2007年には完成してたということですね。裏は大槻ケンヂと絶望少女達「人として軸がぶれている」。 andymori「Everything is my guitar」。裏にgroup_inou「Coming out」。同年は9mm「Vampire」、相対性理論「シフォン主義」が出て第二次バンドブームでもある年。というわけでこれで1999-2008の10年間の(偏った)振り返り。かっしーへバトンタッチ。

1999年でもまだ1桁年齢のかっしーのターン。やっぱその辺の時代での音楽体験はアニメやテレビからが主に。松本梨香「OK!」、クレしん「ダメダメのうた」。既に出た「めざせポケモンマスター」、「月灯りふんわり落ちてくる夜」に対して、同じアニメでも入り口が違うというジェネレーションギャップ…… 「カービィ☆マーチ」。筆者は実は当時好きじゃなかったんですが今ヤバいアニメとして再評価されてますね。もっかい見直したいなぁ。そしてもう一つポケモンから、そもそもルビー・サファイア世代(!!)ということで「アドバンス・アドベンチャー」。筆者、逆に知らない曲だ…… ナルトより「悲しみをやさしさに」little by little。オアシスフォロワー。ロードオブメジャー「心絵」。CCさくらじゃないんだね……。「青春アミーゴ」。めちゃくちゃ流行ったなぁ。その流れでKAT-TUN「Real Face」。ホント当時破竹の勢いだった。嵐「Love so sweet」。やっぱ平成中期はジャニーズ外せない。 GReeeeN「キセキ」。流行ったなぁ…………というわけで第二ターム全員終了。怒涛の平成晩期へ続きます。

　というわけで平成21年～からの音楽。まずは例によってぷれしお氏によるヒットチャート分析リストから。 2009発売、2010にヒットしたゴールデンボンバー「女々しくて」。そしてきゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ「つけまつける」。Capsule、Perfumeで実験を重ねたヤスタカの結晶。進撃の巨人より「紅蓮の弓矢」Linked Horizon。まぁ紅白出てたしなぁ。 SEKAI NO OWARI「Dragon Night」。この辺からキックがえぐくなってくる。 BUMP OF CHICKEN「Hello World！」。EDのUNIZON SQUARE GARDEN「シュガーソングとビターステップ」と並んで名曲。星野源「恋」。売上基準のリスト故触れないわけにはいかない。そして小沢健二「流動体について」。なんか熟練戦士たちが復活してきたみたいなリストになってますね。というわけで趣味をなるべく排して売り上げ参照したぷれしおの俯瞰リストは終了。余り枠は彼の趣味を。ゆらゆら帝国「昆虫ロック」。ゆら帝は全部マストなのだけど、1stからこちらの選曲。 the brilliant green「冷たい花」。1998年。というかまんまOasis。彼らはBlurのカバーとかしてるし生粋のブリットポップの民。アイドルからはBABY METAL「ギミチョコ」。というわけでAKBにまみれたランキングからうまいこと外した選曲をしてくれました。

続きましてまえぴ第三ターン。「マツケンサンバ2」からスタート。あったなぁ……。「群青日和」。説明不要。「メルト」。Supercell。ついにボカロが出てきた。「恋のマイアヒ」。そう、平成といえばおもしろフラッシュ倉庫を外すわけにはいかないんですよ……。日本で唯一オリコンチャートに食い込んだルーマニアの曲。ゆず「栄光の架橋」。ちらっと書きましたがバラードが流行りましたよね平成中期。「最初から今まで」冬のソナタ、流行ったねぇ……。韓流ブームも触れないわけにはいかないよなぁと。というわけで少女時代「Mr TAXI」。日本の市場をアテにして日本語を歌いだす韓流アイドルたち。そういや会が終わった後にエクストラコンテンツとして「江南スタイル」流しました。相対性理論「LOVEずっきゅん」。やくしまるえつこ、平成晩期の女性ボーカリストのスタイルとして触れないわけにはいかないですよね……これ以降ウィスパーボイス女性ボーカリストがぐんと増えた印象。しかし相対性理論のキモはバックバンドのシンプルかつクソ上手い演奏でもあります。というか真部のコード進行とかもかなり独特なので詳しい人にみっちり解説してほしい。ここで今まで誰も触れなかったAKB48「ヘビーローテーション」。そして最後、まえぴ曰く「平成に始まり、平成で終わったジャンル」こと”””青春パンク”””からガガガDXを。確かにメロコアはともかくとして、ゴイステから始まった青春パンクはもはやフォロワーもいないし、創始者の峯田和伸自身が石原さとみとキスするような俳優になってしまったという点からも、青春パンクはジャンルとして終わってしまったと言って差し支えないと思われる。実際ゴイステの曲とかは平成のノスタルジーを抱えた平成の人間じゃないと書けないというのは間違いない。ここ詳しい人に語ってほしいですね。というわけでまえぴのターン終了。

さて伊38の第三ターンです。一番書きたかったパートゆえ、少々長くなりますがご容赦を。 BUMP OF CHICKENから「グングニル」。第一・第二ターンではテレビ経由の曲を紹介した伊38ですが、それに対して(当時)絶対にテレビに出なかったバンプは、いうなれば「オルタナティブ」でした。まぁ僕がバンプを知ったのは中学の先輩だったか、おもしろフラッシュ倉庫だったか、あるいはその両方だったか覚えてませんが。その流れでピロウズ「ハイブリッドレインボウ」。「テレビに出ない」どころか「永遠のブレイク寸前」たるピロウズは本当にオルタナティブだった。そのオルタナティブという枠に、「ロックンロールは鳴りやまないっ」神聖かまってちゃんを。そして先日映画「恋は雨上がりのように」主題歌に採用された同バンドの曲「フロントメモリー」。ただ映画主題歌版は、女性ボーカリストを呼び、亀田誠二がリアレンジしたもので、非常に聞きやすくなっているというか、の子自身のポップセンス・メロディセンスが非常によくわかる構成になっている。しかし「フロントメモリー」の神聖かまってちゃん本家版、それもYoutubeのPVテイクはどうかというと、ピアノが何やってるかもわからないし、高音がきついし音も悪い、非常に「聞きづらい」ものになっている。しかし”””それこそが神聖かまってちゃんだった”””というか、「そもそもポップな人間だったの子だが、売れるため・認知してもらうため・ニコ動で頭一つ出るために、敢えて尖ったことをしていた」、それはよく知られる神聖かまってちゃんの破天荒なエピソードだったり、そして音源そのものの粗さ・聞きづらさ・尖った音質であったのではないか。あるいは、ニコ動という”場”がそもそも、そういったパンクで破天荒な振る舞いを要求するような場だったのではないか、それこそがニコ動文化だったのではないか。という仮説を立てられないだろうか。ここはもっとニコ動にどっぷり浸かっていた人間にコメントをお願いしたい。さてニコ動からボカロ文化をぼくからもほんの少々。「初音ミクの消失」。初音ミク登場当時に生まれた「機械のボーカリストが人間に勝てる部分とはどこか？」という問いに対しての安直な回答として「人間には歌唱不可能な超高速詠唱」が生まれた、その元祖の曲だと思う。これがヒトリエとかミイラズみたいな、後年の高速ラップ邦楽に逆輸入される流れになった。もう一つ、「般若心経ポップ」から始まる一連のムーヴメントを。同曲が流行った際に、製作者がボーカル音源を配布したために「般若心経ブーム」が起こり、「般若心経ロック」やら「般若心経シューゲイザー」など、ありとあらゆるジャンルの般若心経が生まれた。この般若心経タグを巡っていろんな音楽ジャンルを知った、なんて人間もいただろうし、これに限らず「初音ミクが歌ってさえいればどんなジャンルでも聞ける」というリスナーは沢山いたと思われる。これは(にせものさんの言葉を借りれば)”””ガワの文化”””というか、初音ミク以前・以後でも「V系なら・アイドルなら・好きな声優なら、どんなジャンルの音楽でも聞ける」という、ある意味逆にボーダーレスな音楽趣味を持つ日本人の特殊な音楽観に繋げて語ることができると思われる。この辺も詳しい人たちと議論してみたいところ。さてニコ動文化はこのくらいにしてぼくの高校時代からの邦ロック趣味変遷に戻ります。9mm parabellum bullet「The World」、あるいは「Discommunication」。バンプ狂いだった自分が衝撃を受けたテクニカル・バンド・ブーム。そして凛として時雨。今回は「ハカイヨノユメ」。発売日にこれ買って、CDプレイヤーに入れた瞬間に吹っ飛んだ思い出の曲です。しかし、パワーコードとオクターブ奏法さえできればバンプ・エルレ・アジカンがコピーできたぼく世代に対して9mm・時雨・ホルモンが出てきたほんの数代下のバンドマンたちとは技術的に大きな隔たりがあるのが未だにコンプレックスです。そしてこの辺をきっかけに残響レコードにハマっていく伊38。ハイスイノナサ「平熱の街」、そして「鏡面の波」。残響レコードの中でも最先端に尖っていたハイスイノナサがアニソンに接続したとき、得も言われぬ感慨にふけった思い出があります。さて最後に、こうやってニコ動や残響レコードを経由してアンダーグラウンドに潜っていったぼくが辿り着いたのがネットレーベル文化。その中から未だ伝説的扱いをされている「HanazawaEP」より「恋愛サーキュレーション(Shoegaze arrange)」。ニコ動とはまた違う、宅録ミュージシャンの発表の場というものは刺激的でした。というわけで永遠の名曲「ヴァイオリンケースの夢を見る」を流してぼくの最終ターン終了。ケンセイオガタさんはやく公式円盤出してください。

さあ各方面氏。残業にまみれた暗黒期から抜け出したという平成晩期を振り返っていただきます。 2009年、モーモールルギャバン「Pop! 烏龍ハイ」、そして裏リストといいつつポップな、Neco眠る「猫がニャ～って、犬がワンッ！」。実際この辺からアンダーグラウンドですらポップになってくるという。同年の選外はNuito、TTNG「Animals」、サカナクション「シンシロ」、相対性理論「ハイファ��新書」など。 2010、七尾旅人「Search Boy」、神聖かまってちゃん「ロックンロールは鳴りやまないっ」。 2011年、the cabs「キェルツェの螺旋」、TTNG「Adventure」。超絶技巧ギターバンド2つが並ぶすげぇ年だ。そして震災を経た2012年からは、LOSTAGE「Blue」、そして裏は面影ラッキーホール「おかあさんといっしょう」。震災を経て日本人は何を歌ったか？、に対してこの二つはとりわけ振り切れてますね…… KANA-BOON「1,2,Step To You」。に対して裏はうみのて「もはや平和ではない」。笑っていいともさえ終わってしまった今、もはや平和ではない日本でこの曲はある種象徴のように鳴り響く。の翌年、Wienners「Video Girl」。言わずと知れたでんぱ組のコンポーザー。の裏で生まれていたのはD'Angelo And the Vanguard「エイント・ザット・イージー」。 2015年。ceroより「Summer Soul」一切の音すべてが必然のもとに鳴らされた大傑作Obscure Ride。に対してChon「Splash」。これまた妥協の一切ないサウンド。好対照な年。 MUSIC FROM THE MARS「Seaside, Seaside」。そしてこの辺から裏リストというより同率一位という感じになってくる。この年の裏選曲はOdol「逃げてしまおう」。 2017年、ものんくる「ここにしかないって言って」。この辺りで各方面氏は菊池成孔のラジオを聞き始め、その影響で裏選曲としてジャズドミュニスターズ「革命」。 2018年。tricot「potage」。しばらく見てないうちに一皮どころか二皮くらい剥けたトリコ。ドラマーの交代らへんから音楽性が更なる深化を見せ、世界ツアーで得た経験値を完璧に開花させた名曲。そして裏選曲にCRCK/LCKS「No Goodbye」。ポップスといいつつ非常に複雑で難易度の高い音源をリリースする注目の音楽集団。を流して最終ターン終了。そして番外編として「 BEAMS 40周年記念プロジェクト『TOKYO CULTURE STORY 今夜はブギー・バック（smooth rap）』MV」。平成を振り返る回、これさえ流せばよかったんじゃねえの？

というわけにいかないということで、大トリのかっしー。宇多田ヒカルの再登場、キングダムハーツより「光」。平成において宇多田ヒカルは説明不要ながら何度でも取り上げたい。 AKB48「ポニーテールとシュシュ」。彼はハマった世代。そりゃそうか。 BUMP OF CHICKENから「ゼロ」。FF零式の主題歌。同じバンプでも入り口が全然違う……。そして放課後ティータイムから「U&I」。曰くこれがなかったら彼は軽音サークルに入ってなかったという。実際当時は相当勢いがあったし、サークルでのコピバンも沢山あった。けいおんが与えた影響はやはり計り知れないと思う、もっと詳しく掘り下げてもよかったかもしれない。 UNIZON SQUARE GARDEN「流星のスコール」。ぼくがユニゾンの1stを聞いたときには「これで下北系の音楽は終わったな」と思ったのだけど、ユニゾンは以後どんどん音楽性の進化を深め、アニソンとも接続してファン層広げつつ、しかし核の「ユニゾンぽさ」を消して失わず、器用なだけのバンドとは違って非常に強度のあるバンドとして邁進していったなという印象。 Champagne「Starrrrrrrr」。ドロスでなくシャンペインが好きとのこと。しかしこの辺の音楽をバンド音楽ネイティブとして聞いてきた年齢層ズルいなぁ。アジカン「ソラニン」。彼が軽音サークルに入って初めて演奏した曲だからとの選曲。アジカン何曲か上がったけど全然被らないな…… KANA-BOON「さくらのうた」。これきっかけにギターを猛練習するようになったとのこと。ちなみにKANA-BOONはこの曲がウケたのをきっかけに4つ打ちをやり始めて音楽性が変わっていったというが、この曲自体はそこまで4つ打ちを全面に押し出してるわけではないという。 Base Ball Bear「Perfect Blue」こちらも自身が組んだコピバンから。ベボベも取り上げる時期によって全然違うけど、こちらは非常にポップな時代。そしてthe cabs「anschluss」。ぼくからはなんも言うことはありません。ＫＥＹＴＡＬＫは殺す。最後はtricot。Potageをかけるつもりだったが挙げられてしまったので「Wabi-Sabi」を。しかしどうやってバンドで合わせられるんだtricot。しかし、懐古的・郷愁的になりそうだった「平成を振り返る」というコンセプトの中で、最後にtricotやCRCK/LCKSといった「最新を更新し続けるバンド」の名前が挙がったのは、非常に前向きな最後でよろしかったのではないでしょうか。

というわけで以上、録音を聞きながらざっと書いてみました。ぼくのパートだけ長くなってしまったのは本当に申し訳ないですが、いずれにせよここまで読んでいていただき、長々とありがとうございました。「あの曲がない、やり直し」などは今後の開催の際の参考にさせていただきたいのでお気軽にコメントを残してもらえればと思います。次回は9月頭に身内で、また何もかも未定ですが都内でも似たようなことをやれたらと思うので、直談判殴り込みの際はぼくのTwitter垢へリプかDMを。お待ちしております。

Emblem Take 2 Manga Creator: Payments for New Manga Creators Is Roughly the Same as 30 Years Ago

The creator of Emblem Take 2 manga series, Jun Watanabe, went to Twitter on October 26 to ponder if it’s okay that new manga creators are paid the same manuscript fees as he was when he debuted 30 years ago, though notes that it depends on the magazine. George Morikawa, the creator of Hajime no Ippo, chimed into the discussion, agreeing with Watanabe.

漫画の売り上げは、電子の普及もあり過去最高だという。だが新人漫画家の原稿料は、雑誌にもよるが僕がデビューした『30年以上前と同じ』だ。 WEB雑誌などではむしろ安いケースもある。様々な理由があるのだろうが… これでは作家が育ちにくい気がするんだよな… 本当にこれでよいのか漫画界？

“Thanks to the use of electronic devices, manga sales are said to be at an all-time high. But for new manga artists, manuscript fees remain mostly unchanged from when I made my debut over 30 years ago, though this depends on the magazine.

In some instances, such as in web magazines, the payments are even lower. I suppose there could be various reasons for this... I have a feeling that it's hard for writers to thrive in this kind of situation...

Is this really the right direction for the manga world?”

It should be noted that over the last few years, coupled with the rise of digital sales of manga, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba sold record amounts, more than double than any other manga series in one year, bringing up the whole manga market single-handedly. And those statistics are for physical sales, digital sales aren’t as widely tracked. This one-series phenomenon has continued with JUJUSTU KAISEN and Tokyo Revengers.

What Jun Watanabe is referring to are the base payments for new manga creators at the start of their manga-making careers for each page. Usually, rates for manga creators start at 10,000 yen (US$88) per page, depending on the magazine, how the chapters are presented, and of course their contracts. Manga creators are also paid royalty costs on every sale of the collected volume plus rights fees for anime and live-action adaptations, though historically that fee doesn’t scale up for big hits.

As outlined in the Bakuman manga, the duo got 9,000 yen (US$80) per page for their one-shot, then 12,000 yen (US$105) per page for the serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump. This draws parallels with what manga creator Sato Shuuhou, the creator of Say hello to BLACK JACK, revealed about their debut earnings with Umizaru in 1998, which was 10,000 yen (US$88) per page in Morning. As manga creators got more popular, their base rates go up, but so does production costs.

George Morikawa, the creator of Hajime no Ippo, replied to the above tweet, just saying “I’m with you [on this subject].”

It’s hard to prove what Watanabe claims is wholly true, as both the contracts for manga creators are a closely kept secret (unless they divulge the amount themselves), and digital manga sales aren’t tracked the same way physical sales are. But one thing is for sure, manga creators deserve to get paid, and 10,000 yen went a lot further (though, not much further) in the 1980s than in the 2020s.
