Eat in moderation. Junkfoods are good as snacks but not as your meals for the day. Don't compromise your health even when you're tight on cash.

Be wise
Most of the costumers in convenience stores are students. Like 7-Eleven, they offer budget meals with plenty of dishes. The same with snacks as well. 7-Eleven’s budget or busog meals are well-packed you can take on the go when you travel with your friends.
As a student always on a budget, I usually pick the cheapest dish but will make me full and satisfy my need for food.  Basic tip to save money, before purchasing the first product you have chosen is to scan the prices of other items and compare it. You might find better and affordable ones.

Classic Pinoy Breakfast Combo
Not having enough time for breakfast but always end up being hungry? Today we bring you one of the Pinoy classic merienda combo, the Pandesal and Sikwate (hot chocolate)
Start up your day with this combo by dipping the bread into the hot chocolate. It is a cheap and pleasing combo that will surely make your day. One pandesal costs Php5.00 each and cocoa powder wouldn't cost as much as Php20.00.
An alternative for this is buying one loaf of sliced bread (mostly costs more or less Php30.00, depending on the bakeshop) and would last at least after three breakfasts.
Not a fan of chocolate drink? Switch it up with a sachet of coffee (Php 6.00 - Php10.00) or any hot drink you are comfortable with.

Save Food, Save Money
When students start to save their money. We mostly spend less on our meals, and we hardly never get the chance to eat whether we're in a hurry or too tired to spend anything at all. This can lead us, students, to lose our concentration in class, and often get headaches. Some might faint due to the lack of food they eat and caused health issues on the line.
So, when you happen to have a leftover on your meal, be sure you'll preserve it just in case when you felt hungry or crave for something to eat, then you won't have a problem with spending your money or wasting your food at the same time. Food preservation also ensures that this packaged food remains edible and safe for consumption, preservatives are added to it.  In general, natural food preservatives are therefore considered safer for consumption.
Here some common, quick and easy food preservation methods:
Tumblr media
 Drying
Drying is a food preserving method that has the advantage of retaining all the nutrients of the food product and reducing the weight of the food product substantially. And of course, the important nutrients that are lost in this particular method are thiamin and vitamin C.
Tumblr media
Freezing
Freezing works by keeping the foods in extremely low temperatures thus preventing the growth of any kind of microorganisms in the foods. Like using a refrigerator for preserving your food.
Tumblr media
 Canning
Canning can be done by sealing the edible food items in sterile cans and jars then boiling it after to kill any of the remaining menace-making microorganisms. But even with a little lack of attention, this process can lead to easy and fast contamination of canned food products.
Tumblr media
 Smoking
Smoking is a method most commonly suitable for fish and meat products with the technique of heat that dehydrates the food product and the hydrocarbons absorbed.
For more ways, tips and techniques about the process of food preservation, you can click here for more further information.

Choosing proper freshness!
As students, some of us are now experienced in cooking, while others haven't. So to those who were just learning how to cook, we must first learn how to find fresh and healthy ingredients for our food. Especially when for us students, we also need to maintain our healthy lifestyle and proper mind.

In the market, not all vegetables, meat and other products were sold fresh. We need to be careful in choosing the right item in order to prevent sickness and waste on our budget money.
Every fruit and vegetable has its own clues to its freshness, and the most important thing to remember when inspecting produce is to use your senses.
Like asking yourself how the item smells, how it feels, and whether it looks appealing, or at least like the other items in the store or market place. Here some basic tips.
Fruits
Before you determine if it's ripe, you must first pick it up and turn it over in your hands. The surface should be largely smooth and even, with a firm but not a hard surface. If you feel pits and dents under the surface, the flesh of the fruit has probably been damaged by shipping or is slowly rotting. The flesh should be firm. While citrus fruits that are too firm are likely dry on the inside.
Also, pay attention to weight, the heaviness can indicate how juicy the fruit you choose. And strong aroma can indicate over-ripeness, and if the fruit smells a bit sour or stinky. With a light, sweet smell is a good indicator that your fruit is fresh and ripe.
Coloration is also important, be sure to avoid anything with dark marks and spots, along with white streaks or colors on the surface, as well the appearance of having bruises, dents, and other pockmarks.
 Vegetables and Leafy Greens
The same rules apply to the vegetables. Be sure to pay attention to the surface of the vegetable and it's consistent, evenly colored, and firm all the way around.
With leafy greens, expect a little brownness and a few tears in the leaves due to shipping or handling. The majority of the leaves should be green, smooth, and unbroken. While root vegetables with cracks on the base, this means it's too dry.
 Meat and Sea foods
Using our sense when selecting meat, fish and other seafood, be sure to avoid that’s dark brown or discolored, has a strong odor and feels tough or slimy. As well as damaged, leaking, or torn packages, as it’s likely been exposed to the air and harmful bacteria.
Overall, in order to find the fresh items that you find. It's important to trust your senses, trust your nose and sense of touch as much as you do for your eyesight.  Because those traits are given to us, not only to see the beauty among humans but also to prevent and protect us from harm by staying healthy and mentally alert.

TIPS FOR EATING WELL ON A BUDGET
We are all guilty that most of our money end up in our tummy. It's a different kind of pleasure that makes us want to reward ourselves with it to relieve the hunger caused by stress. However, there are just times when you need to mind your tight budget and have just enough food intake.
Here are some tips that can help you cost less on food on a tight budget:
Plan your meals that's good for one week. Make a grocery list of what you really need and check out what you already have in your pantry. Avoid going to the grocery store hungry to avoid impulse buying.
Cook at home. It costs less than eating out. Cooking large meals can also save you both time and money. You can enjoy some leftovers for a little snack later or upgrade the leftovers for your dinner.
Pack your lunch. It may although cost you time for the preparation but it is less expensive, way healthier and can avoid unwanted allergies because you know what is on your food.
Bring your own tumbler. Just like packing your lunch, bringing your own tumbler is a good investment. Bringing your own drinking water is often overlooked and you will be surprised by the money you have saved compared to buying bottled water regularly. Plus, it's zero-waste and reusable.
