i have genuinely never cried as hard after a movie, as soon as the credits started rolling, i walked ahead of the crowd exiting the theater and didn’t even make it to my car before i started sobbing. Even in my own real life i have trouble thinking of the times that i’ve cried for that long at that intensity.

The film is quiet, personal, and unyielding in its expression of a father-daughter relationship. Throughout the movie i found myself with tears in my eyes, not even fully understanding what it was that had pushed me to that point. After getting to the end however all those small moments had complied into that final blow of emotional damage.

Calum, 31 year old father, and 11 year old Sophie are on vacation together that immediately took me back to my own childhood travels with my father and that similar feeling of confusion. Being unable to see your parent as an actual person with problems and complexities that go beyond you, because you, frankly, don’t go beyond them quite yet. The questions that were left unanswered never took away from the way that the moments made you feel. When you’re a child you don’t want to, or rather can’t, think you your parents as people, and when you’re an adult you long to know their secrets, know who they are really, but they’re too far beyond your reach.

Anyway go see this movie, call your dad, tell him you love him and cry in the theater parking lot until it’s safe to drive
