Happy Autism Awareness Month!
i drew this piece about my experience with autism, i had the idea for a while but it really took shape as I drew, especially in the environments i drew in.
autism is an incurable disorder found in 2.8% of the population, and it is not an inherently bad thing. disabilities almost only exist when the world is not made to accommodate them.
for me, autism means that I have a lot of social trouble. I don't know how to pick up on social cues, I am unaware of how i am perceived by others, and I don't know how i should behave, talk, or even just exist. it's extremely isolating. I also exhibit behaviors like stimming, masking, and having special interests and hyperfixations, all things I encourage you to look into if you know someone autistic.
autistic people are not dumber, meaner, or weirder, we're just different, and lately i've seen a resurgence of insults such as "sped" (special ed, which i'm in,) "acoustic" and "restarted", or even just the r slur casually thrown around. aside from the glaringly obvious reasons why this is wrong, it further pushes the narrative that neurodivergent people are stupid, other, and it's extremely disheartening to see something that shapes the entirety of who you are used as a negative connotation.
what can you do if you know someone autistic? what i would want is for them to be educated on what autism is. I would like people to ask me about my special interests and hyperfixations, and talk to me about them. I would like people to include me and invite me in conversations and gatherings because it's difficult to do that myself. I would like people to clarify how they feel because it's hard for me to tell. I'd just like to be treated with compassion and respect, and for people to be aware of my differences, even if they're not visible.
I'm working on a much longer piece of writing about this, but I wanted to get something done during april ♾️🌈

hi there and welcome back to my blog! took a short break for mental health and I had a lot going on but I'm back, gonna be posting a lot of art now :)
I'm back to traditional art in my sketchbook! this piece I drew as a self portrait, and it mainly represents two different things for me- one is what the title is, internal beauty, a literal interpretation, depicted as the inability to find yourself beautiful so you search internally for the beauty, but in a literal, desperate sense.
The other part is about my gender identity, as a transgender boy, I struggle with a lot of dysphoria, and this piece references when transphobes will bring up chromosomes or your DNA as a justification for their phobia, it's sort of like saying, "i don't care what you think, your insides say otherwise." additionally, I tried to stay as accurate to myself as possible, as much as I wanted to get rid of my scars, give myself top surgery, and better jawline, I decided I wanted to draw myself more realistically for an accurate representation of emotion.

omg you’re so cool!! Okay, thoughts on Edgar’s imp of the perverse? Also, where do you take Japanese classes? How advanced are you? (Sorry if these are too may questions, I’m looking to follow more people who are bilingual like me!)
no worries! I think edgar's imp of the perverse is beautifully written, it's a good demonstration and metaphor for the importance of our actions and moral stand grounds, I love the examples it uses in the story. I'm intermediate at japanese- I use duolingo + workbooks I do on my own, and will be starting up lessons next year!
