This is EXACTLY why Bucky Barnes is my favorite character and it brings me so much joy to finally see a little bit of it on screen.

On hot summer days Bucky and Nat would go on the roof and do target practice.  When Clint was around he’d join.
Bucky felt less self-conscious about his arm when it’s just Nat.  (Steve tended to have a wistful, slightly guilty look whenever he saw the arm.)
When Nat asked him “Who do you want me to be?"  He just said "You.”

Bucky is right-handed.  Winter Soldier is not.
——————–
“Steve?"  Steve half-looked up from his sketching to Bucky, standing in the kitchen.  "Bucky, I’ll eat whatever you throw together.  Or if you wait a few minutes, I can…”
“No, it’s not…” Bucky’s voice sounded tentative, confused.  Steve held his pencil still, and resisted his urge to run to help. Bucky still has moments when he has a hard time figuring out which parts were Bucky Barnes, which parts were Winter Soldier, and which parts were HYDRA.  Jumping to Bucky’s side at times like this tended to result in panic attacks.  Or just attacks.  So Steve stayed where he was, and pretended to draw.
Bucky tried again.  “How do you know which hand to use for, y'know, drawing?"  Out of the corner of his eye Steve could see Bucky looking at the butter knife in his hands with a sense of utter bewilderment, a jar of peanut butter open on the counter.
"I’m right-handed because it’s the hand I’ve always used."  Steve ventured, unsure what the problem is.
"What about Bucky?  Which hand did Bucky use?"  Shoot.  It’s generally a bad sign when Bucky is speaking in the third person.  Steve’s mind raced while he carefully held his body still – Bucky is now *very* good at reading gestures from across the room.  Steve clearly remembered Bucky as right-handed….  But then, with a grimace, Steve remembered the Winter Soldier catching his shield left-handed….
"What’s wrong, Steve?  Can’t you tell me?"  Bucky could sense the tension.
"I don’t exactly remember, Bucky,” Steve tried to feign some levity, “It *has* been 70 years, and I wasn’t exactly staring at your hands the whole time."  He carefully set down his drawing and turned to Bucky.  Waving his pencil with his left hand, he joked, "All I know is that when I use the wrong hand, my pictures look like they’re drawn by you."  Bucky glared at him, but seemed to get the message.
Steve watched as Bucky tossed the knife between his hands a few times.  Then, FWIP – it landed neatly embedded on the window sill next to his drawing.  (Particularly impressive given that it’s a butter knife).  Satisfied, Bucky took out another butter knife and started smearing peanut butter on a slice of bread, flipping the knife comfortably between his two hands.
Steve goes back to drawing, making a mental note to watch out for times when Bucky becomes solely left-handed.

So I found out a few days ago that Bucky’s birthday is today (March 10).  And like what happened with Steve’s birthday comic, I sat down to draw a comic about silly birthday shenanigans and ended up with a guy who doesn’t really want a celebration.  Ooops?
(Sloppiest coloring job but whatever.)

Since my copy of the zine will probably arrive tomorrow, I guess it can be brooklynzine posting time!
Since it’s a Stucky fanzine, I decided to do another attempt at pre-serum Steve and Bucky banter.  Steve being sad/bitter and pushing Bucky away, and Bucky just… persisting.  ::rolls around:: I love that dynamic so much, but it’s soooo hard to do.
I struggled a lot with color on this one.  This comic made me discover that the colorpicker tool on my normal drawing tablet DOESN’T WORK.  (Usually I draw in grayscale there.)  As in, the color that I eyedrop is always slightly more red or more blue or more EVERYTHING than the original color.  AND IT WAS DIFFERENT EVERY TIME.  WHEN EYEDROPPING THE SAME COLOR PATCH.  I came *this close* to giving up on coloring this comic altogether. I ended up manually entering a bunch of color numbers.  On a computer that had no keyboard.  (And then I had to re-tweak everything when I converted to CMYK.  T_T)
Also, so much gratitude to brofisting for not only organizing the whole amazing zine effort, dealing with the printers and the post office and 200+ orders, but also letting me selfishly hog 3 pages instead of 2.  (That’s a separate saga)

Hmmm…. for shorter Bucky-deals-with-surly-Steve: here.  This comic ran away from me, so I’m just posting it as is instead of doing more work on it.
mcu!Bucky is actually pretty well-off, if you go by the flashback in Cap2: he has both parents, his parents have a car, and he is impeccably dressed.  That snide comment about Steve shining his shoes just serves to underscore the class difference between them.  I *love* all of the fanfic headcanons where Steve and Bucky are scrappy rascals who grew up on the streets, but I got to thinking: if Bucky was that much better off than Steve, how would they even meet?  Why would Bucky, who is so charismatic in all the ways that pre-serum!Steve is not, even want to hang out with Steve?
So my new headcanon is that while Bucky’s a product of an interfaith marriage, at a time where a Catholic marrying a Jew would burn a lot of bridges.  Maybe how Bucky and Steve met was in a public elementary school, where kids were bullying Bucky for bringing matzoh to school during Passover, and Steve’s the only one who stood up for him.  For middle school, Bucky’s dad enrolled him in a Catholic school for the better education, and Bucky’s method of coping with that sense of not-belonging is playing the class clown.  Meanwhile, Steve isn’t smart enough to not pick fights in *his* middle school.
Speaking of which, Steve.  Even though he is at heart a pure and good person, that doesn’t mean he’s not flawed.  Steve’s way of coping with things is to push people aside.  He has rather prickly front, especially when he’s feeling defensive (like in the Avengers where he snipes at Tony, despite actually agreeing with him.)  And the very line about hating bullies makes it too easy for Steve himself to define the enemy.
So this comic starts out with Steve being surly and Bucky being cavalier, but they work through it.  Because only Steve can see through Bucky’s front, and vice versa.
(Master post of all my catws stuff.)
Oh hey I repurposed the “end of the line” thing to be happier.  I guess it’s compensation for making “on your left” be super depressing.
Also, relevant Great Depression video: (go to minute 41 for some nice soup lines and talking about how it was an issue of pride…. no wonder Steve’s so surly in the line.)

Word Count/Productivity Tracker
Patreon || Ko-Fi || Masterlist || Work In Progress
Overall Sheet
Tumblr media
This is my cherished word count tracking spreadsheet that I’ve been using for a long time to track my word count and productivity. I use this sheet for all of the writing I do, including fiction, nonfiction, academic, personal, etc.
It’s extremely useful if you want to get an idea of how productive your writing routine is, and if you typically work on a diverse set of projects (like myself) it helps you track your productivity in each one. I used to keep a kind of timesheet as well, where I would document which times of day I worked in which projects and for how long, and this can be helpful for that too.
I got a lot of requests to share my system and make a post breaking it down, and I’ve also created a template you can copy and use yourself in good sheets or excel.
View it in Google Sheets | feel free to make a copy and use it yourself :)

knitting tutorial made by a seventy-something grandmother: two min long, filmed 17 years ago, shows you what you want with the skilled patient hands of a beloved deity, made with the world’s shittiest camera, the best video on the fucking internet, four comments and 30 views, you lose the video and never find it again.

Satine Kryze said war isn't the answer to saving lives and people in fandom love to crucify her over her stance. She would know! She comes from a warrior society with a history of bloodshed and violence, but when she lost her family in the Mandalorian civil war, she rebuilt Mandalore alone and was chosen by the people to lead them through an age of peace, something she successfully did for almost 20 years.
She remained neutral during the Clone Wars because her own culture's history with war already knew war was always a game for power.
The war was even fought between manufactured soldiers.
Planets were forced to pick sides, and the ones who chose to remain neutral were strongarmed into the war one way or another.
Satine Kryze died refusing to pick sides. Everyone loses during a war.
She was the target of assassination attempts because she chose pacifism. She was a target because she chose peace. The Republic did not have access to Mandalore, a planet that would have ensured a victory for Palpatine much sooner.
She died not long before the end of the war and Mandalore fell into the clutches of the Empire when the Republic fell.
Palpatine hated her. Satine stood for everything he stood against.
And just to add to her awesomeness, Obi-Wan Kenobi almost left the Jedi Order to be with her.

I think one of my favorite things about Renegade Nell is how easily George connects with Nell. It's very obvious these two don't know each other (Nell either leaving before George was born or after she was born but still very young) but the second George learns they're sisters? She's attached and asking her all sorts of questions and Nell takes it in stride. They both barely know the other, but they know they're sisters and I love it so much.
