It’s quiet.
My conclusions: ...honestly, I'm not sure there is any clear pattern? Some use dialogue, some immediately set a scene or context, some are incredibly vague without revealing much, POV is very clear in about half of them, entirely unknown in the rest. I will say that several of them require the second sentence to contextualise them before they hit properly as a line, so that's perhaps the clearest pattern here — you can't stop after just the first sentence.

Basically, I realized that when people recommend fics, they are often tagging the author's Tumblr as well.
I haven't been doing this (I do tag the author in the actual tags, though) because frankly it's often hard to track down what the Tumblr handle is if it's not identical to the ao3 username (and they might not be active or take it as spamming). So I was wondering whether authors have a preference. (Based on my blog, I am primarily interested in writers who publish codywan fics, but anyone can vote!)

Thank you so much for the ask @lastontheboat! 🥰 As it happens, I just recently answered this, and since then very little has changed — so I'm mostly repeating what I said then, with perhaps a couple of changes to give two other fics a shout-out.
Horizons Over Battlegrounds — BBC Merlin, 14.5k
Honestly, if someone only ever reads one thing of mine, I hope it's this one. It's a canon era fic, specifically based on that scene in s4 where the knights prank Merlin by pretending they didn't leave any food for him. I always hated this scene, it felt so utterly wrong that they would treat Merlin so terribly — this fic is my fix-it for that atrocity. It's also just some of the best writing I ever produced, and I never felt like I reached that standard again since.
So yeah, this one is my pride and joy.

Merthur watches Heartstopper, my beloved. Yes, this is a WIP, but it’s one of my favourite things I ever started. It was supposed to be a quick, fluffy Drabble for Dopamine, but has grown far far beyond that; it’s probably the most detailed character study I’ve ever done of Arthur — and also Nick and Charlie from Heartstopper 😅 Writing it is definitely a challenge, especially the pacing, but it’s very rewarding too when I figure out how to do a certain part.
(Spoiler warnings for HS season 1!)
Get Him Back — BBC Merlin; Loaded March (by Footloose) spin-off, 14.6k
If you know me at all, you know I love fight scenes, but because most my fics are short, I rarely get to write them properly. This one finally gave me the opportunity, and these scenes are among my favourite fights I’ve written, ever, and it makes me sad that only so few people will ever see them. I mean i get it, it's a spin-off but I’m sad anyway.
[These last two are changed from the first time I made this list; previously Blackout, Beaming, Gold and My Breath In Your Lungs]
A Faire Fight — BBC Merlin, 6.7k
A post-Canon, Arthur returns in modern day fic, where Merlin brings Arthur to a medieval faire to give him something that reminds him of home. Again, this one has fight scenes, my beloved — but without stakes, in a tournament. This one was just fun to write.
Stay With Me — BBC Merlin, 4.2k
This one made the list for one particular line that I’m just proud of. You’ll know when you see it. Canon era, heavy whump & violence, but definitely with a happy ending!
And again, I know it says five favourite fics, but I have to give Mine To Protect an honourable mention, otherwise this just feels wrong. This is the first fic I ever published, and the older parts are honestly not up to my improved writing standards — hence why it didn't make the top 5 — but i’m still proud of having written something as big as this (213k WIP).

I have a couple questions if you are willing/have the brain space to answer. Could untreated ADHD be the reason SSRI meds are horrible for me and make me feel worse/in a complete brain fog? Ambien kept me up for 3 days at a time and other sleep meds never worked for my insomnia? Also the reason that caffeine doesn't energize me and can calm me down or make me sleepy in larger quantities? And that Benadryl makes me jittery and on edge instead of relaxed or tired? Every one I've mentioned those things to have laughed it off but I saw an anecdotal post about backwards reactions and wondered if that might explain a lot of my life. Thank you for your time and giving me an incredible story to lose myself in time and time again. Take care! 💖
Hi, I'm so sorry that this is literally months late, somehow I never got a notification for it and thought it was from someone else when skimming through my asks any other time.
So, medication definitely works different for everyone, regardless of ADHD or not. From what you're describing, there most likely is something unusual about your neurochemistry and/or function. Have you spoken to a doctor / psychiatrist about these contraindicated effects? Also, have you ever had any sort of neuropsychological diagnostic assessment?
If not, I'd definitely try to get something like that started. Ideally, try seeing a psychiatrist who specialises on neurodivergence (ADHD specifically in your case). Before your first appointment, try to make a list with notes detailing all the medications you've been on so far, and what effects they caused — not just the weirdly unexpected ones, but also any sort of side-effects, and expected effects if they occurred. Any bit of information can be helpful to figure out what is actually going on.
I'm sorry I can't really give you good answers as to whether or not this could be ADHD or not, but given that I don't know anything about your life or symptoms otherwise, those are assumptions I wouldn't wanna make. It's definitely worth checking out though!

Steampunk AU my beloved! Originally written for Whumptober 2021, this one got a bit out of hand as well. I keep thinking that I wanna write a sequel, but I never find the energy to work it out in my head. My dear friend Sunfall also made amazing art for this, and it was such a joy to do this together. Featuring MurderFeline!Aithusa, low-key soulmates Merthur, pretty magic, and some quick fight scenes even.
My Breath In Your Lungs — BBC Merlin, 6.5k
Another Whumptober fic, my Merman!Merlin AU; featuring a trapped Merlin, Arthur coming to rescue him, and one of my favourite not-quite-kiss scenes. I even commissioned art for it, and the lovely Miralya did an absolutely stellar job of it!
I know it says five favourite fics, but I have to give Mine To Protect an honourable mention, otherwise this just feels wrong. This is the first fic I ever published, and the older parts are honestly not up to my improved writing standards — hence why it didn't make the top 5 — but i’m still proud of having written something as big as this (213k WIP).

Dear fic readers, don't fucking do this
A friend of mine found the following comment on her fic this morning:
I would really like to see you try harder. I know what you're capable of and I think you can do better. I've noticed a distinct slump in your writing over the past few years and it's so disheartening.
You can do better, and you should.
For the record, this fic is essentially a fandom classic, and the author has been writing for over 20 years, so it's not like either of us are spring chickens, okay? So as a PSA, I'm sharing with you my response to that comment, because if you don't know this already, you really need to figure it out.
Hi, quick question, who the fuck do you think you are?
An English teacher? The author's mom? A paid editor?
Did anyone ask for your shitty opinion? I'm guessing not.
Do you write? Do you have any idea how much effort goes into a FREE HOBBY GIFT, which you then arrogantly decided to shit all over just for, what, grins and giggles? Do you GRASP that authors have lives and other obligations and that they write for fun? Do you possess the self-awareness to clue in that you, with comments like these, suck ALL the fun out of what is meant to be a hobby? Do you want the author to just stop posting? Because shitty comments like this one are the reason that authors delete their fics, which you would then likely also bitch about, because you feel entitled to their work without paying for it via a little fucking COMMON COURTESY.
The only person who can do better here is you. And you really, really should.
I don't usually get this hot, friends. I don't usually stoop to the commenter's level when they get this shitty. But I've seen GOOD AUTHORS chased off, not just from AO3 but from the entire hobby of writing forever, thanks to shitty attitudes like this. You are not entitled to my labor or anyone else's. You're not paying me in anything other than gratitude, and that gratitude is good for my mental health. Conversely, snotty abuse is bad for an author's mental health, and why would they want to keep writing if that's how you pay them for their work?
Entitled, shitty, "hot takes" on how much better you think my writing could be are not welcome if I don't explicitly ask for them, and that goes for literally every author you ever encounter. If they didn't ask, keep it to yourself, or better yet, contribute to fandom by writing your own stories.

Or: the one where Arthur realises how things could have gone between him and Merlin.

Great post overall, just one thing;
RSD is not, in fact, a medical term (or a well-established construct in research). Rejection sensitivity is, but RSD is not. Please keep that distinction in mind, and use rejection sensitivity in your vocabulary as much as you can. RSD is useless as a term/communicative device because it lacks a clear definition, and it will do you no favours to use it in a clinical setting.
Rejection sensitivity is a very real experience. Let's not reduce it to a buzz-word with no scientific backing. If we ever reach the point where RSD has been sufficiently researched, I will gladly rescind these statements and back off about this, but we're not there yet.
If you want a slightly more in-depth explanation as to why you shouldn't use RSD over plain rejection sensitivity, there's a bit more at the end of this post.
