Role swap au - what if friede & co are with team explorers while amethio is the one that's hired to protect liko 👀 (more notes under the cut)

-amethio & co. travels using the submarine

-This amethio is still professional, but less grumpy and frustrated. Occasionally he might even smile (!) -Conia LOVES liko's sprigatito

-zir is the cook and he enjoys watching nidothing with liko

-spinel is also part of his team(!) Along with hamber(butler guy) and the rest of the unrevealed explorer members)

-meanwhile friede etc travels on the airship (it belongs to team explorers)

-friede is more playful and a bit mean, always trying to rile up amethio

-Have no idea how the rest would behave but i feel they're more formal and less laidback than canon since they have to report to boss

Amethio is just cold, tired and done with life. Fluff piece with Amethio and his found family subordinates

Series: Pokemon Horizons

Characters: Amethio, Zir, Conia, Spinel (Mentioned)

Problem is, the Explorers emergency bases aren’t exactly top notch. They mostly exist for brief respites during missions.

Case in point: the heating here is abysmal. The windows haven’t had upkeep in a while and he can feel particularly strong gusts of winds shake through the cabin. Even with two blankets layered on top of him, it’s impossible for him to keep still. He keeps tossing and turning, trying to find a position that will magically make him warmer.

His nose is cold again, so his sticks his head under the blankets and contemplates his life choices.

Amethio grumbles and pulls the blanket up farther. The bedding is soft, but he can’t get comfortable.

Their mission went fine, but the surprise snowstorm left Zir, Conia, and himself taking shelter in one of their bases rather than risking the flight back to their submarine. Problem is, the Explorers emergency bases aren’t exactly top notch. They mostly exist for brief respites during missions.

Case in point: the heating here is abysmal. Granted, the weather usually isn’t this bad, but the windows haven’t had upkeep in a while and he can feel particularly strong gusts of winds shake through the cabin. Even with two blankets layered on top of him, it’s impossible for him to keep still. He keeps tossing and turning, trying to find a position that will magically make him warmer.

He’s had trouble sleeping these last few weeks, so it’s not overly surprising that he’s restless. But he’d prefer to be restless and warm at the very least.

His nose is cold again, so his sticks his head under the blankets and contemplates his life choices. Neither of his pokemon are exactly good for keeping warm. Soublades is a fire type, but it’s sharp and pointy. Certainly a loyal partner in battle, but not ideal for keeping warm while bundled away during snowy weather. Corviknight is far too large to be inside, and it’s also bulky and jagged due to its steel typing.

He knows other pokemon are fairly good at keeping warm. Flareon is the first pokemon that comes to mind, though Spinel sleeps next to his Umbreon. Amethio still remembers stepping into the lab after Spinel had pulled an all nighter collecting data for a mission. He was passed out on the floor with Umbreon snuggled against his neck.

Amethio is pretty sure Spinel would kill him if he found out he saw that. Especially given what happened after Sango printed a bunch of photos of Spinel after he came back from a particularly windy mission. Personally, Amethio doesn’t get why he was so upset. His hair looks like he cut it himself with craft scissors anyway, how exactly does a bit of wind make it worse?

Speaking of wind, another gust cuts through the cabin. Amethio shudders. It’s getting humid underneath the blanket, so he begrudgingly sticks his head out. Without the blanket to muffle the sounds of the outside world, he can hear a kettle being set onto the stove in the other room. Maybe Conia is making tea? Do they have tea here? It might be hot chocolate.

A warm drink doesn’t really sound that appetizing to him right now, despite the cold weather.

But, he does get another idea. He might not have any pokemon to keep him warm, however-

He shuffles out of bed, dragging his blankets and pillow with him. He quietly walks into the kitchen. The smell of hot chocolate wafts through the air, but it makes him a little queasy right now. Conia is distracted looking for something in the cupboard. He pads through the kitchen, and into the hallway towards the other bedroom.

He hears Conia remove the kettle from the stove, oblivious. He’s always been pretty quiet when moving around, and she tends to get focused on what’s in front of her. This usually leads to either him accidentally scaring her, or having her accuse him of being able to teleport because she didn’t hear him walk by.

Regardless, he’s glad she didn’t spot him because he’s not really in the mood to talk.

He peers into the other bedroom. Zir is on the bed, half-leaning against the backboard and reading a book that’s probably been sitting in the cabin since the Explorers bought it.

It’s not too late to go back to his room and deal with the cold . . . just as he debates leaving, a full body shudder passes through and spurs him into motion. Nope, he can deal with it.

He quietly crosses the room and approaches the bed.

Please don’t say anything

Amethio puts his pillow next to him, causing Zir to look over from his book.

He climbs onto the bed, and lays down with his back pressed against Zir’s side.

Please don’t say anything

He still has his blankets draped over him, so he chooses to hide his face in them rather than acknowledge he just walked into the room to steal Zir’s body heat without saying anything.

There’s a moment of pause where Amethio holds his breath, followed by some shuffling and the sound of the book being set on the side table. Oh no. Zir is going to ask him what’s wrong, or ask him to leave, or-

A hand rests on his head, then he feels fingers weave through his hair.

Oh. This is … actually pretty nice.

Amethio lets himself relax into the touch. It’s warmer in here, and the hand in his fair feels nice . . .

He yawns. It wouldn’t hurt to sleep for a little while. The snow isn’t supposed to let up until morning, anyway.

Conia carries the tray of hot cocoa towards Zir’s room. She hadn’t been able to find Amethio in the other bedroom.

“Zir, do you know where-” she cuts herself off at the sight in front of her. Zir silently puts a finger over his mouth to go shh. He’s got a dopey smile of his face, and she can’t blame him. Amethio is dead alseep next to him, curled up against his side. It’s quite an adorable sight, given how reserved Amethio usually is.

She steps out of the room to leave them be. She can always make more hot chocolate later.

time for me to overanalyse horizons again

So… what the hell happened between Gibeon and Lucius because it’s evident that something did happen. Like did Lucius do something that offended Gibeon or vice versa?

Also the fact that Gibeon can phone people is an interesting detail, like I was with the theory that he’s an Ai but recent episodes have made me doubt it, especially with Amethio’s treatment by the rest of the Explorers.

At the beginning of the episode, Onyx mentions how he’d like to join Amethio down on the ground. Ok it’s own, this really isn’t anything, however once the fact that Amethio has his own submarine, his own two grunts, he gets off with disobeying orders, the theory about him being Gibeon’s son is starting to make more and more sense.

Like Spinel worked on his own, and Sango+Onyx weren’t shown alongside any grunts. There are other grunts in the Explorers, since Hamber speaks to one in episode 24 who tells him that Agate and Spinel are in the lab.

Also the fact that Amethio is called “sir” by Zir and Conia, compared to how the others refer to the admins, which is “Master” and then their name.

Something kind of interesting about the Explorers duos is that their main Pokemon's types say something about the dynamics in question.

For example, Conia's main Pokemon (Golduck) is Water type and has the advantage over Zir's Sidon (who is both Ground and Rock type). I feel like it shows that Conia is usually the more professional of the two in a work setting (Zir watched a Gurumin video while waiting for Amethio back in HZ027, while Conia waited in silence and had a "proper" posture etc).

Onyx's main Pokemon being Rock type means he has the advantage over Sango's Onigohri (Ice type). Which, in a way, shows that he is usually the more levelheaded of the two and thinks more clearly (while Sango tends to snap and lose her temper quickly). So he can be someone who covers for her.

Agate is an interesting case because she is the only admin other than Amethio whose main Pokemon is dual type (Charem being both Fighting and Psychic type). Which is fun to think about in contrast to Spinel's Blacky (Dark type), because Fighting has the advantage over Dark, while Psychic is weak to Dark. I feel like it illustrates Spinel and Agate's dynamics quite well in a way, since Spinel often holds information back from her or the others and she knows him well enough to know that he is never being fully honest, so she tries to get the truth out of him, but he retreats back when she tries to pry, etc. On top of that, Agate's Explorers outfit might indicate that she has two other Pokemon that we don't know of (since she has three Pokeball on her), which means she could potentially have three Pokemon in her team, similarly to Spinel. Maybe her and Spinel's teams are meant to complement each other's.

Amethio isn't exactly in a duo like the others (the others admins are often together, Onyx and Sango spend time together even when it's not about work, and Spinel and Agate have been mentioned to research things in a lab back in HZ024), so it highlights that he is quite isolated in comparison. But it's worth pointing out that Soublades being both Fire and Ghost reflects Hamber's Yonoir (who is Ghost type) and Friede's Lizardon (part Fire type), which is fitting since Friede and Hamber both influence Amethio the most in terms of battles and he is inspired by them both in different ways.

Some thoughts on the last episode:

1 - Gibeon mentions something called Lacrium, which may be the Shiny Zygarde that appears behind him. It also says "once more in Rakua" which is confusing. Did he arrive in Rakua? Is he in Rakua? Has he ever been to Rakua? What's going on?

2 - Spinel 100% will betray the Explorers. His face at the end of the episode says it all. It is interesting that there is a possibility that both Amethio and Spinel would leave the group, but while Amethio would betray the Explorers to help Liko and the RVT, Spinel would betray them in favor of his own interests. It's interesting to wonder what Spinel's reason is for being on the Explorers, and what he's up to with Rayquaza and Terapagos. I prefer it to be something more interesting than "he's the villain and wants power to dominate the world" or something like that.

3 - It's super interesting to me that Amethio says "Follow your own path" when he terastalizes Ceruledge, because we know he's not in the Explorers for his own dreams and interests. Amethio doesn't have a dream, and he probably doesn't think he has a path outside of the Explorers. It's a very interesting choice of words.

4 - Conia and Zir were obviously worried about Amethio. Conia's tone of voice, and how Zir speaks first of Amethio's well-being before anything else, further shows how much they care about this troubled teenager.

5 - Floragato using the yo-yo to attack is so cool. Plus, she hugs Fuecoco and Liko (it was so cute). She was definitely super proud of herself for evolving.

6 - Liko thanking Amethio for his help! She seemed a little unsure of what to say, but it's nice that Amethio wasn't rude to her like he is to Friede. I think this may have been his way of apologizing for almost killing Liko in episode 1. Also, this is the second time Amethio has saved Liko or one of her Pokémon, and I think it would be cool to see Liko consider that at some point. He had nothing to gain by saving Sprigatito, and he did anyway, and that's cool.

7 - Am I the only one who thinks Charizard and Ceruledge fought way to well together to be the first time? Maybe we'll get a reference to what really happened in the mine with Moltres now that we finally saw Amethio and Friede working together.

This episode was really good, and I can't wait to start arc 3!
