I mean it is clear that when SU designed their Zircons they took some visual inspiration from ‘Ace Attorney’ in general and Phoenix Wright specifically, but also if I were to do an Ace Attorney Gem AU I would probably not make Phoenix a Zircon. 

Because a hugely important point of Phoenix’s characterization is that he came into the legal world by choice. And that he’s not all that great at the ‘typical’ aspects of lawyering, but he makes up for it with his… unique courtroom techniques that do play to his strengths and… basically, Phoenix Aceattorney is to Lawyering as Pearl Stevenuniverse is to Sword-Fighting. And I think the most natural way to preserve that aspect of his character in an AU is to make him a non-Zircon, forcing himself into the courtroom.
