Amethio is just cold, tired and done with life. Fluff piece with Amethio and his found family subordinates

Series: Pokemon Horizons

Characters: Amethio, Zir, Conia, Spinel (Mentioned)

Problem is, the Explorers emergency bases aren’t exactly top notch. They mostly exist for brief respites during missions.

Case in point: the heating here is abysmal. The windows haven’t had upkeep in a while and he can feel particularly strong gusts of winds shake through the cabin. Even with two blankets layered on top of him, it’s impossible for him to keep still. He keeps tossing and turning, trying to find a position that will magically make him warmer.

His nose is cold again, so his sticks his head under the blankets and contemplates his life choices.

Amethio grumbles and pulls the blanket up farther. The bedding is soft, but he can’t get comfortable.

Their mission went fine, but the surprise snowstorm left Zir, Conia, and himself taking shelter in one of their bases rather than risking the flight back to their submarine. Problem is, the Explorers emergency bases aren’t exactly top notch. They mostly exist for brief respites during missions.

Granted, the weather usually isn’t this bad, but the windows haven’t had upkeep in a while and he can feel particularly strong gusts of winds shake through the cabin. Even with two blankets layered on top of him, it’s impossible for him to keep still. He keeps tossing and turning, trying to find a position that will magically make him warmer.

He’s had trouble sleeping these last few weeks, so it’s not overly surprising that he’s restless. But he’d prefer to be restless and warm at the very least.

His nose is cold again, so his sticks his head under the blankets and contemplates his life choices. Neither of his pokemon are exactly good for keeping warm. Soublades is a fire type, but it’s sharp and pointy. Certainly a loyal partner in battle, but not ideal for keeping warm while bundled away during snowy weather. Corviknight is far too large to be inside, and it’s also bulky and jagged due to its steel typing.

He knows other pokemon are fairly good at keeping warm. Flareon is the first pokemon that comes to mind, though Spinel sleeps next to his Umbreon. Amethio still remembers stepping into the lab after Spinel had pulled an all nighter collecting data for a mission. He was passed out on the floor with Umbreon snuggled against his neck.

Amethio is pretty sure Spinel would kill him if he found out he saw that. Especially given what happened after Sango printed a bunch of photos of Spinel after he came back from a particularly windy mission. Personally, Amethio doesn’t get why he was so upset. His hair looks like he cut it himself with craft scissors anyway, how exactly does a bit of wind make it worse?

Speaking of wind, another gust cuts through the cabin. Amethio shudders. It’s getting humid underneath the blanket, so he begrudgingly sticks his head out. Without the blanket to muffle the sounds of the outside world, he can hear a kettle being set onto the stove in the other room. Maybe Conia is making tea? Do they have tea here? It might be hot chocolate.

A warm drink doesn’t really sound that appetizing to him right now, despite the cold weather.

But, he does get another idea. He might not have any pokemon to keep him warm, however-

He shuffles out of bed, dragging his blankets and pillow with him. He quietly walks into the kitchen. The smell of hot chocolate wafts through the air, but it makes him a little queasy right now. Conia is distracted looking for something in the cupboard. He pads through the kitchen, and into the hallway towards the other bedroom.

He hears Conia remove the kettle from the stove, oblivious. He’s always been pretty quiet when moving around, and she tends to get focused on what’s in front of her. This usually leads to either him accidentally scaring her, or having her accuse him of being able to teleport because she didn’t hear him walk by.

Regardless, he’s glad she didn’t spot him because he’s not really in the mood to talk.

He peers into the other bedroom. Zir is on the bed, half-leaning against the backboard and reading a book that’s probably been sitting in the cabin since the Explorers bought it.

It’s not too late to go back to his room and deal with the cold . . . just as he debates leaving, a full body shudder passes through and spurs him into motion. Nope, he can deal with it.

He quietly crosses the room and approaches the bed.

Please don’t say anything

Amethio puts his pillow next to him, causing Zir to look over from his book.

He climbs onto the bed, and lays down with his back pressed against Zir’s side.

Please don’t say anything

He still has his blankets draped over him, so he chooses to hide his face in them rather than acknowledge he just walked into the room to steal Zir’s body heat without saying anything.

There’s a moment of pause where Amethio holds his breath, followed by some shuffling and the sound of the book being set on the side table. Oh no. Zir is going to ask him what’s wrong, or ask him to leave, or-

A hand rests on his head, then he feels fingers weave through his hair.

Oh. This is … actually pretty nice.

Amethio lets himself relax into the touch. It’s warmer in here, and the hand in his fair feels nice . . .

He yawns. It wouldn’t hurt to sleep for a little while. The snow isn’t supposed to let up until morning, anyway.

Conia carries the tray of hot cocoa towards Zir’s room. She hadn’t been able to find Amethio in the other bedroom.

“Zir, do you know where-” she cuts herself off at the sight in front of her. Zir silently puts a finger over his mouth to go shh. He’s got a dopey smile of his face, and she can’t blame him. Amethio is dead alseep next to him, curled up against his side. It’s quite an adorable sight, given how reserved Amethio usually is.

She steps out of the room to leave them be. She can always make more hot chocolate later.

reading your autistic amethio analysis and now i can't get the idea of amethio rapidly drumming his fingers on whatever available surface is around when he's happy out of my head, another headcanon for my collection

this was what I had in mind when writing that!

i really like the idea that Amethio has difficulty expressing his emotions and feelings in typical ways, but won't stop tapping once he learns it can mean "I'm happy" or "I like spending time with you"
