Stones, like us, stand at the intersection of countless lines crossing one another and receding to infinity, at the center of a field of forces too unpredictable to be measured; and we awkwardly call the result chance, hazard, or fate.
Marguerite Yourcenar, from the introduction to The Writing of Stones by Roger Caillois

A touch of madness is, I think, almost necessary for constructing a destiny.
Marguerite Yourcenar
Winner of the Prix Femina and the Erasmus Prize, she was the first woman elected to the Académie Française, in 1980, as well as the seventeenth person to occupy seat 3. Yourcenar is renowned for her historical novels, which often explore philosophical and existential themes. Her most famous work is "Mémoires d'Hadrien" (Memoirs of Hadrian), a fictionalised autobiography of the Roman Emperor Hadrian.
The novel showcases her meticulous research, vivid descriptions, and profound psychological insights into the characters. Speaking to the young Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor Hadrian recounts his memories, using a chronology and rigour of thought that are unique to him. It is an opportunity for Yourcenar to tackle her favourite themes: death, the duality of body and mind, the sacred, love, art and time.
Yourcenar's writings often delved into the complexities of human existence, the passage of time, and the search for meaning. She contemplated existential questions, delving into the depths of human emotions and experiences. Her works were characterised by introspection, introspective narration, and deep psychological analysis.
