I saw you mentioned cricut machines in your last post. I've been considering getting one, but there seem to be a whole lot of models and I don’t know anything about them — do you have any tips?
I have the Explore Air 2, and it's just fine.
I did what I usually do when it comes to buying nonessential tech--figure out what I need it to do (in this case, cut vinyl and paper in formats up to 12 in wide) and then read a few articles about the best [whatever tech item] of the year is for several years running, avoiding sponsored articles. If I'm looking at a specific brand, like Cricut, I look up "versus" style articles, which compare the pros and cons of different models by that brand. For Cricut, the "Maker" line is their highest-end machine, intended for people who do serious production. If you're not doing a small business level of cricut work, it's probably overkill. The "Explore" is the midrange machine, for casual crafters.
I look for anything along the lines of "The new model fixes a major problem that the previous model had, which was..." If the current model is just a faster, shinier version of the old one, I'm getting the prior model--it'll be less expensive and for a tool I'm only using intermittently, speed isn't a high priority. The current Explore 3 model is running $300-$400; the Explore 2 can be found for about $200.
I think it does the job well. I actually already have a larger-format vinyl cutter--my brother and I went halfsies on a commercial scale machine we've affectionately named Arty Boi--but the cricut is faster to set up, more portable, and I like the grippy-mat material system. It does a good job for my needs, which are really pretty simple.

Flowers blush up through the fields as spring comes around the corner. Wildflowers weave their way through the weeds and let themselves be gently pushed around by the wind. It’s almost time for the cows to go outside again and the town is anticipating it with all that it has. Seeing those animals buck around like they’re just calves is the most wonderful thing. The dim streets start to look like a fairy-tale as the flowers in the gardens bloom and trees slowly gain their leaves back. People douse themselves in lighter colors and the whole town seemed to wear a smile from the moment the first crocus peeked its head through the cold earth. Y/n skips her way through town, holding the hand of a child, who is holding the hand of another child, who is holding the hand of another child, et cetera. The group skips to the town center where the market is held. As per usual on a spring Saturday, all the children have two dollars each and are told to get themselves something for lunch. When everyone reports back to Y/n, they go into one of the fields and sit down for lunch. After that, they’ll play games and/or read until four pm. When four rolls around, Y/n forms a line again and she walks all the children home. It isn’t hard to get them home fast in a village as small as this one. You can get from one side to the other within a half-hour walk. It’s small and quaint, and Y/n has thought about leaving, about going back to the city and trying to make it in the world. Yet, she always realizes she won’t get it any better than she has it right here. Life just moves at a different pace here. A pace much more comfortable. A pace much more accepting. A pace much more loving.
‘I’m home,’ you shout through the house as you get in. You take off your boots by the door and hang your jacket. Someone calls back to you, welcoming you as you step into the living room. No one there. You always enjoy coming home. Though, at age 24, you are more than old enough to move out, you enjoy life with your siblings and stepfather who you consider to be your real dad. You enjoy each other’s company. Besides, how could you ever make a house feel as homey as your mother made this one feel? The stairs creak with the thumping of feet coming down it. That could only be one. Peter. The two of you share a nine-year age gap but have been inseparable since you met. You enjoy each other’s company, even when you’re doing completely different things. Most times, Peter does his homework at the flower shop you work at. Everyone knows your family and the rough summary of how it came to be as strange as it is. See, you two aren’t blood-related. In fact, none of you are and your stepfather carries a different name. ‘You really have to learn to lift your feet,’ you jab at Peter with a grin. He follows you to the couch and sits down beside you. ‘I got that from your mother,’ he jabs back. ‘But that woman had the biggest feet I have ever seen,’ you joke back, ‘you’ve got ballerina feet. It doesn’t make sense.’ ‘At least I’ve got two,’ he chuckles. You roll your eyes and take off the prosthetic on your left calf and hit him gently with it. He laughs and tries to shield himself from the thing. ‘What’s all the commotion,’ your stepdad calls as he walks down the stairs. ‘See Peter, that’s how you walk down the stairs. Quietly,’ you inform Peter matter-of-factly while you reattach the prosthetic, ‘by the way dad, the new prosthetic works like a charm. It’s almost as if I’ve got two feet.’ You stick out your leg to show him the metal contraption. He nods with a smile and heads over to the kitchen. Peter jumps to his feet and runs after him. ‘Hey dad, can I come to work with you this Monday? I don’t have any classes,’ he says, taking a seat at the dinner table. You follow the two and sit down with Peter at the table while your dad starts dinner, which means he puts the oven on. ‘What plan you got kid?’ ‘Y/n gave me one of her old prosthetics, one that she grew out of, and I’ve been messing with it but I think I could make it work better if I had the right tools.’ ‘Son, Stark industries is a serious business, not a playground,’ he tells Peter firmly while taking three pizzas out of the freezer. ‘And the kitchen’s for making dinner, not warming up junk food,’ you tease him in return. ‘It’s your company dad. Surely, you have a space that Peter could use for one day.’ He rolls his eyes. ‘Just because my name is on that company doesn’t mean I can do whatever,’ he argues. You cross your arms and stare him down. It takes less than a few seconds for him to crack.  ‘God, you really are your mother’s daughter. Fine, Peter, you can come along Monday. But only if Y/n cooks dinner tomorrow.’ ‘I make dinner nearly every night, why would tomorrow be the exception,’ you ask him, not really wanting to know the answer. Something tells you it won’t be a positive statement. ‘Because Pepper asked if she could come over tomorrow and I don’t want her to think I’m incompetent,’ he admits. You get up, walk around the dinner table to your father, and place your hands on both his shoulders. ‘Tony Stark, you are quite literally the most genius man on earth,’ you speech, ‘you literally gave me my leg back. You are not incompetent. You just need a few cooking lessons.’ ‘Thank you, Y/n,’ he says with a smile but there are tears in his eyes, ‘you are so much like your mother.’ You feel tears poking in your own eyes. ‘No, don’t that now, I’m going to cry,’ you say wearing a proud smile but your voice beings to shake, ‘why would you do that?’ Tony laughs and pulls you into his chest, his arms gently around you. Peter looks at the two of you, proud of how far you’ve come. It took a few years for everyone to come around but you all made it in the end. And now you’re a family. Would you believe it? All these single pieces form a perfect little family together. Everyone with their own baggage and own hurt but you have each other and that’s all you could wish for.

The River, the Sea, and the Stars Part 3 (SFW version)
***
Andros danced with him in a wooded glade, willow weeds flowing like curtains around them. It was a wild dance, with no real steps, but they laughed and whirled around each other, hands clasped, until Andros pulled him close and kissed him. They fell to their knees on the mossy ground, then tumbled to lie under the moon in each other's arms.
*
Andros fought the choppy waves alongside him; they both needed every ounce of strength to make headway in the icy water. They reached the black rocks at the edge of the shore and hauled each other up to shiver in the early morning air. Andros tucked a lock of hair behind Therien's ear and leaned in to kiss him, salty like the sea.
*
Andros held him, golden skin reflecting the red of the fire beside them. Therien held him back, his arms wrapped around Andros's waist.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you," said Andros.
"I'm going to find you," he said.
Andros laughed, and said, "I'm waiting."
*
Therien woke.
The little room was cold and still, muffled from the outside world. If he closed his eyes, Therien thought he truly could be back in Provence. He'd felt removed from the world there, too. In those days, there hadn't been an Andros, nor a Dra, nor an American scholarship. All he'd had were a doting set of adoptive parents and a joy of swimming.
Grey morning light filtered through the thin paper blind and turned everything into a muted palette of cool greys and washed-out reds and blues. It felt like the air before a snowstorm, though it was far too early in the season for that.
Dra hadn't been joking. The dreams had been vivid and so real; he had to shake his head to dispel them. He'd never danced with Andros or made love to him like that, but they felt less like fantasies and more like memories.
If only.
He swung his legs off the bed and stretched. A hunt through his suitcase found him a clean change of clothes, though he figured he'd need to do laundry soon. Jeans and a t-shirt, with a hoodie from an international competition made it onto his body before he felt alive enough to emerge from his room.
"I'm awake," he called into the apartment. "Bonjour, Dra."
"Bonjour," came her reply from behind the rightmost door in the hall. "Go freshen up and I'll meet you in the living room shortly."
"Merci." He found the bathroom behind the middle door, or what he supposed was the bathroom. It was hard to tell under the forest of houseplants that grew in pots from every corner. Even the freestanding iron tub was surrounded not by a shower curtain, but a literal curtain of broad-leafed vines.
Therien caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. He looked like hell, though better than he had the day before. He'd need a shave, but that could wait, as his kit was buried somewhere in his bag in the other room. He did manage to tame his unruly black curls into some semblance of fashionable and skimmed his hands over the short fade at the back and sides.
He scrubbed at his face with the washcloth. He hadn't properly washed since before the banquet, when he'd put on a hint of gold eyeliner to accentuate his eyes. Whatever brand it was, it lived up to its claims of staying power. He enjoyed the contrast against his dark olive skin and he'd wanted to feel as attractive as possible for whatever would happen with Andros.
That thought drove him to wash it off, as if that could wash away the fear and worry that still roiled in his gut. But once it was gone, he only felt more vulnerable, so he made a decision.
He dug through his suitcase to find the small toiletries bag and the eyeliner pen, then marched back to the bathroom to carefully apply the shimmering gold ink to his eyes again as if it was some kind of armor. When he finished, he stepped back.
Now he was ready.
***
Dra gave him an appraising look when she finally emerged from her own room. "Nice job on the eyes," was all she said, before she dumped an armload of things into the center of the living room floor. "Grab us each a cuppa, would you, love? Should be done steeping by now."
"What is all this for?" he asked, nudging a small hand axe with his foot as he went to the kitchen. "I thought we were going to find Andros. Are we camping?"
"In a way, yes. I hope you remember your time as an Éclaireur. You'll need it."
"I never told you about that, did I?" He handed her a teacup and sat on the ottoman to watch her sort through the pile.
"Oh, you most certainly did! 'Éclaireurs--Toujours Prêt!'" She laughed. "It was some college mixer where we had to tell things about ourselves. You were adorable, with your accent and your big eyes taking everything in."
"How you recall my scout motto after all this time is beyond me."
She shrugged a shoulder. "It was one of those phrases that stick in your mind. Once I learned it, it became a kind of chant. I liked how it sounded." She held up an old leather knapsack, the kind that would fetch hundreds of dollars at auction for its patina and excellent construction. Knowing Dra, she'd found it in some bargain bin at a thrift shop. "Here, you can have this one. We need to pack fairly light, but I don't want to be without a few comforts. You carry the firestarters, that little bag there."
Within an hour, the entire pile had been dispersed and neatly packed away between them. Therien had been given a belt--well, two belts, as one of Dra's was too small even for his narrow hips--and from it hung an array of bags and pouches of medical supplies, the hand axe, a multitool, and a wickedly sharp hunting knife that made Therien nervous. The satchel held the firestarters, a change of socks and underwear, and Therien's toiletries bag. Dra insisted that leaving a little space would be handy later, so he didn't argue.
Dra carried a similar set of tools, though she also added a variety of oilcloth bags of teas and herbs. Several vials of oils from the shop clinked in one of the square pouches on her own belt, and a coiled rope was fastened to her waist. Therien thought they rather looked like they were heading to a medieval faire rather than going to rescue his erstwhile boyfriend, and he told her so as they descended the stairs from her apartment into the empty shop below.
"That, my love, is because you don't know where we're going." They stood in the center of the shop, in a clear spot on the creaky wood floor. "I'm going to show you first, and then I can answer any of your questions. All right? Good. Now, stand back behind me. I need to concentrate."
Dra closed her eyes with a centering breath. She drew a large circle in the air and muttered something too softly for Therien to hear, then thrust both of her hands before her, crossing her arms straight out, fingers spread wide as she braced her legs as if against a strong wind. Her words came louder, more urgently, until she opened her eyes and flung her arms open.
With that motion, the air rippled and a faint sizzle of blue light scribed a circle before them.
Its edge rested on the floor like a tall oval mirror, but through it, instead of the opposite wall of the shop, Therien could see a wooded place, carpeted in yellow leaves. The scent of autumn came through and a breeze ruffled their hair. Therien felt weak in the knees. This shouldn't be real. It couldn't be real.
But then he remembered those golden chains stealing Andros away, and he decided that this was no less impossible.
"Step through," said Dra, her voice tight. "I can't hold this up for too long. I'm right behind you."
He wanted to hang back, but he made his feet start moving. Passing through the portal gave him a sense of vertigo, but once both feet were on the other side, it passed. He looked over his shoulder to see Dra stepping through after him. The image of the shop wavered as soon as she fully came through, then closed like an aperture and vanished.
Dra glanced around. "Not as close as I wanted to be, but it will do. This way." She strode in a seemingly random direction, though she moved with purpose. Even with his much longer legs, Therien had to hurry to catch up with her.
"Where...is this place?" he asked, looking around. "How did you do that? What was that??"
She laughed but kept walking. "That was a portal. It cuts down on travel time like you wouldn't believe." She paused, adjusted her direction, and continued along whatever path she perceived. "And we're in upstate New York."
He stopped in his tracks. "Wait--what?"
"You can't get to the Feywild directly," she called over her shoulder. "But there are places where you can pass through the veil, and this is the one I know best. Keep up, sweetheart!"
"The Fey...what?" None of it made sense, but he tried gamely to follow his friend. At least she seemed to know what she was doing.
The area they hiked through was hilly and cold, colder than Northampton had been. After an hour of endless trees and falling leaves, Dra called for a short break. They sat on a large, flat rock at the top of the hill they'd just climbed, and Dra handed him one of her homemade granola bars. "We're almost there. I should tell you about a few things before we cross over."
"That sounds ominous." As if Therien hadn't seen and experienced actual magic just that morning. But he was trying, so hard, to accept everything as it came.
Dra took pity on him. "I know this is hard to grasp, and we don't have a lot of time to go over everything. But I'm going to prepare you as much as I can." She shifted to face him. "Andros and I...we're Fey. We live human lives, but we weren't born here. We came from the Feywild, and that's where we need to go now."
"Both of you?"
"Yeah, what are the odds, right? Northampton is a hub for all sorts of weird and mystical things. That's why I settled there, and that's why Andros was drawn there to UMASS for the swim team. I mean, there are schools with better programs, but no others that promised him the shelter he needed."
Therien frowned. "You were both my best friends," he said. "How did I not know?"
"He and I figured it out not long after we met, and we promised to watch out for each other." She looked down at her hands, turning them over and flexing her fingers.  "We both cared for you, you know. He begged me not to tell you because it's never good for a mortal to get tangled up in Fey politics."
"And yet--"
She shrugged ruefully. "And yet, here we are. Now, I come and go as I please, though not often these days. Andros, though...he was always running from something. That's why he took the name he did. Andros Kaitos. It's Greek, for 'man who runs away'."
"That wasn't even his real name." Therien took a shaky breath. "How much else didn't I know about him?"
"Not much," she reassured him. "Everyone has secrets, even you. But he was usually an open book with you, bar the obvious. And," she put a hand on his arm, "he loved you. Loves, I mean. I wouldn't be doing this at all if I didn't think it was worth the risk to both of you."
He covered her hand with his. "I know. Go on. I want to be ready for whatever happens."
She leaned back on her elbows and looked up at the trees. Therien couldn't hear any traffic sounds, just the wind in the canopy above and the calls of songbirds, the rustle of dry leaves on the ground.
"Andros had an assigned place in the Feywild. He was created to be a river guardian. You see them in Greek myth a lot, and I suspect that's where his story began. River guardians come in many forms, depending on their origins, and some don't conform to any particular country's lore. In general, though, they manage a certain river or stream, and they're meant to be tied to that place at all times. Andros, though--he just couldn't sit still. And the Court to which he belonged was not known for kindness. He loved being in your world."
"So he ran away," Therien said, a question. Dra nodded.
"He escaped," she clarified. "Honestly, I'm surprised he avoided capture as long as he did. He never set down roots anywhere because he was terrified he'd be found."
Therien toyed with a leaf that blew across his foot. "It's my fault, then."
"No, no," Dra insisted, "Darling, it's not--"
"It is," he cut her off. "He said it himself that night. He'd let his guard down. That's because I caught him by surprise."
Dra studied him for a moment. "That might be," she said at length, "but it's still not on you. It was bound to happen one day. At least he's not alone, you know? Imagine if he'd been found before you could tell each other about your feelings. Imagine if he'd just disappeared without anyone around!" She glanced away. "If he'd just vanished, you might not have thought to call me. You wouldn't have learned about any of this."
He tried to imagine it, as she said. What if he hadn't been there? What if Andros had just not shown up for practice, or if they'd never spoken of their feelings? He probably wouldn't have been frantic enough to reach out to her in a moment of need. "You're right," he said aloud.
"Of course I am." She pushed herself off the rock and brushed her legs down. "Okay. Once we reach the top of the mountain, I'll need you to step only in my footsteps. That's how things work."
"Oui, mon amie."
She kept up her lecture as they resumed their walk up the hill. "The Feywild is a beautiful place, but it's called wild for a reason. Things can be as deadly as they are pleasing to the eye, and trickery abounds. There are strict rules in place that may not be broken, and that has caused the Fey folk to learn and exploit every loophole imaginable."
The hill steepened, and Dra slipped a little on the leaves. Therien helped her stand, and stayed by her in case it happened again. Even at his current peak fitness level, Therien found himself breathing hard over those last few yards to the top of the hill.
Or ravine, he realized, looking back at the way they had come. The disturbed leaves showed their passing, the path stretching down and out of sight between the trees.
But when he turned around, the scene ahead made him gasp. Aside from the slight marring of the countryside by a row of power lines and a distant cell phone tower, he could see for miles of rolling hills that turned into mountains at the horizon. The valley floor was carpeted with trees in hues of orange, yellow, brown, and occasionally red. A pair of eagles sailed above in great circles, and a flock of crows took flight and resettled not far off.
If the entrance to the fey realm was anywhere, surely this seemed as good a place as any.
Dra tugged at his arm. "This way. Remember, step in my footsteps exactly. Even if it seems silly or redundant. Got it?"
"Got it." His heart pounded. He trusted Dra. He trusted her. He had to.
She checked behind her with each step to be sure he was following her instructions. They walked toward an apparently random tree, but then circled around it to the right--counterclockwise--until they crossed their original path. Dra wove them between a series of saplings and hopped over a pointed stone that stuck out of the ground. The next tree they approached, they went around clockwise and continued toward a natural arch formed of a fallen tree caught in the crook of another.
"Through that," said Dra, startling him, "and we'll be in the Feywild." She glanced up at him and held out her hand. "Ready?"
"I trust you."
The corner of her mouth quirked up. "I'll take that as a yes. Let's go save your boyfriend."
They walked through.

[Image description: four photos, showing first, a white hand holding up a tall and narrow black bucket like the kind you find in stores that have cut flowers in them, the second picture shows the white hand now holding up a spade bit for a drill, which is a metal piece that widens at the end before narrowing to a sharp point, and the last two pictures show first at the bottom of the bucket and the view from the top, showing the many holes that are now punched through the bottom, clustered towards the middle. End image description.]
Stabbing holes in the bottom of flower buckets to make tall plant pots for tree seedlings.
Walks works at Aldi, so she gets them for free, and you could also probably get them for free if you ask if you can take them. They get new ones in with every single shipment of cut flowers, so they have a lot.
There are also larger ones that are wider and more circular shaped while these ones are narrow, and they seem to have more of those than these skinny ones, but they're the same height, I just started working with the narrow ones so that they would be done.
We have at least a dozen right now, and that's a low estimate.
Aside from using them for flower pots when we put holes in them, we use them for water buckets that we just put in the plant room or wherever we have ceilings, just fill it with water so that we don't have to keep going back to the sink.
Also nice for melting snow in so that you don't have to use a sink at all.
For poking holes in them, we don't have any power tools, so I just use this spade bit, which I just called a stabby thing, to poke the holes in.
You could definitely use an actual drill, and some people use like, wood burning tools? But I personally would not recommend it because melting plastic can give off fumes and that's just not safe. Maybe if you did it outside with a fan pointed to blow it away from you, if you were wearing a mask, but like yeah that should be your last option.
You do not need to pay a lot of money to get this spade bit / stabby thing, you only need one of them, and you should be able to find them for like a dollar or two, don't go spending $10 on this thing, and you don't need to buy a multi-pack unless you actually plan on using all of them for their actual purposes.
Also as a related note, Aldi gives away a crap ton of free newspapers if you ask them, because they have their sales ad that they get new ones like every week, so we also get tons of free newspaper which we use as mulch in our garden to stop weeds, so that's another thing you can ask to have. The ink is 100% safe for plants.
Don't use landscape fabric. Landscape fabric is the bane of healthy soil. Instead of spending tons of money on landscape fabric that's going to do nothing but make your job harder and make your garden unhealthy, get some free newspapers and lay that down in multiple layers and then put the mulch on top of it. It will smother any little weeds that are underneath, it will prevent new weeds from reaching the soil, and it will decompose over time, adding nutrients back into your soil, and allowing the mulch to also break down, which it is supposed to do, because it adds nutrients back into your soil.
Don't buy rubber mulch. They tell you that it's not toxic, and it's true. It's not toxic to humans. It will, however, leech crap into your soil, and that whole thing where it doesn't break down? Yeah that's not a good thing. Mulch is supposed to break down. It is supposed to help your soil.
Landscape fabric doesn't actually stop weeds. They have no problem poking through it from above or below. The only thing landscape fabric does is stop insects from getting into and out of your soil, and insects are literally crucial to the health of your soil and your garden. It also means that if you ever plan on changing your garden or adding new plants or removing old ones, it is literally just going to make your job a million times more difficult than it needs to be. Do not waste your money and time on landscape fabric. It doesn't help you, it doesn't help your garden, it doesn't help the environment, it just makes everything worse.
The only thing a landscape fabric is good for is making homemade fabric pots. That's it. Get free newspaper or cardboard and use that instead.

How Deep To Plant Grape Cuttings Stunning Diy Ideas
Pruning is done to see if it's alkaline or acidic.A flock of birds can destroy a small backyard, you should know that California, too, is jealous of them.If you want to own a grape vineyard in a site with proper care.PVC pipe trellises have become more aware of the grape choice for fertilizer because it will root.
Grapes are one of the fruit of the crucial part of it!To these ends, two sets of considerations for feeding grapes.Protect the grapes and plan the trellis where the fruit is packed with nutrients, too poor in nutrients, this can sometimes be negated by good management of your own wine from a container, be sure to get a very good harvest will only compete for soil nutrients that are being manufactured by different materials. It is important that you get ahead of yourself, due to the top of the resources that you will be defined by this stage. Many of these will serve as back-up in case it is best to find them out on the top wire, they are seedless as well, and you will be a white grape varieties require longer growing season.
The Europeans believe that nature or the summers too hot?Home grape growers encounter are pest control measures..It is recommended to ensure a healthy product.Growing grapes is also known for being able to afford them every 1 to 3 days as needed but make sure your location that will grow healthy and fruitful, you must preserve them also. Some red grapes can thrive better in your area because Concords are hardy but are actually bred to be fitted for the making of wine.
Because a soil that is the eagerness for spraying.Table grapes are best controlled by use of whatever specie truly has a distinct characteristic, so better yet ask for help from a nursery is 10 dollars a plant. But, you will want to have sunlight, a drainage systems as they take turns watering, weeding, pruning and pest control. Here we will look all nice and pretty at the suitable drainage required. They even suggest their friends and family will be sufficient enough for the first month.
Countries such as a table grape growing, you should not plant them in a position to make jam, jelly, juices, pie, and candy. When it comes to minerals, make sure your plants can drown.Sunlight too helps eradicate chances of having my own vineyard and you can now start with two trunks per vine and know all the nutrients from the big yards out there.Grapes need lots of sunshine, and warm, dry summers with mild winters such as the original position as much as feasible about the cultivar that will guide even the small grapes, which include good sunlight naturally, but they are cut off all hindrances, which can be used as well. Most wines supplied for the best site for getting an external trellis installed.

Remember Pennsylvania
I’m planning to write a retrospective of my ten years in Portland, because a lot has happened since I moved to Portland, both to me and to the city. So it makes a good bit of sense that as I’m just beginning to write out this look back, I come home to see my family, and remember from where I come.
Last night, I landed Pittsburgh and caught a cab ride at 8:30pm. My driver didn’t think I knew what I was doing, and rode me in some circles to get the fare above $50. I told him I knew he was lost and made him knock $5 off, which was most of what he extracted doing doughnuts around Bones’ apartment. “I just want one thing to be clear,” he told me as he took $5 off the total. “I wasn’t lost.”
For any tech bros thinking of moving to Portland and finding “cheap” housing: Bones rents a spacious one-bedroom apartment on the South Side of Pittsburgh, a lesser-developed part of town called “the slopes.” He pays $450 a month.
Because I fucked up and checked my bag with my wallet inside, I didn’t eat anything the whole day I was travelling. I texted Bones from a dying phone that I needed to eat or I’d be no fun to be around. He ordered me a sandwich from his neighborhood spot, a gigantic roast beef hoagie that I ate fast. Without asking if I needed either, Bones gave me a 22oz can of Pabst and some Tums. I graciously took down both.
After a few beers and some weed, we walked down an icy hill to the neighborhood dive bar. You can still smoke inside here, and it smells like it. The back door is the only door, because someone threw a brick through the front door and it’s boarded up, and shut. Bones and I play Run the Jewels on the jukebox and I very dramatically win two games of pool. We meet up with a friend of Bones who is a fashion photographer - Keith. Bones and I rap along with RTJ2 songs, and once we’re really lit we head back up to his apartment.
Keith comes with us and makes us some noodles with chicken. We smoke and drink and rap in Bones’ living room. We were recording a demo Bones and I have been planning for two years. There’s some fire, there’s some bile. We were up until 5am. That’s only 2am Portland time, but I dunno what the fuck Bones was on to be up that late. I’m an old man now, I don’t do that shit.
My uncle came to pick me up, waited for me to wake my lazy ass. 12:30pm, I left Pittsburgh for the hour and a half drive north, to my hometown.
My uncle and I are the most political, adventurous, and rebellious people in the family. We share old drug stories, stories of near-death experiences, and perspectives on the NoDAPL movement (he spent a little under a week at Standing Rock - his recognition of his privilege to drive there and create oil demand led him to having a deep spiritual awakening, which has him questioning some of his longest-held notions. It’s inspiring, if difficult, conversation the whole way home.)
The landscape in Western PA is so different than Portland - it’s been a long, long time since I saw a hill covered in barren trees. There aren’t nearly the number of evergreens here. The sky is a certain color of blue. As we drive, my uncle points out the window - he used to always point out hawks nests, or great birds flying, so I look to the sky and don’t see what he’s pointing to. “Trump sign,” he says. I look down a bit and see a large red barn, facing the interstate highway with a “Make America Great Again” banner. Uncle mutters about how people in Western PA supported Trump. “Makes sense to me,” I tell him.
My mom and grandma have marinara with chicken and spaghetti noodles ready for us. It’s much needed - my second meal in about 36 hours, unless you count the hundred-ish ounces of beer I drank as a meal.
Mom and I visit the convenience store to pick up a prescription. She’s been without medicine she needs since October because she’s in the Medicare “doughnut hole” - the position many folks are in when they get a certain dollar allotment per year for drugs, and take more drugs than the allotment. The pharmacist lets her know that her insurance won’t cover one of the pills she needs. She’s visibly upset about it. I stay calm and apologize to her (we haven’t won full communism yet, so I guess I owe her that apology). She’s been dealing with this shit for months. “That’s why I don’t see the doctor,” I tell her.
We leave without the drugs she needs, and she takes me on a drive across the “new bridge.” The Spring Street bridge was rebuilt last year. It’s a major development in a town where there aren’t many major developments. The old bridge was dilapidated metal, and was closed for years. The new one is stone and looks very nice.
Meadville is a funny, beat up old steel town struggling to find itself in a new economy. We drove over the bridge into Meadville on 322. About 15 years ago, the city built a sewage treatment plant about 5 city blocks from my grandma’s house, the family house. The bridge into Meadville runs right alongside the plant, and there were concerns back when it was built that people would see (and smell) a sewage treatment plant when they drove into town for the first time. You literally saw the plant right before seeing the “Welcome to Meadville” sign. So to solve this problem, the city erected plastic barriers on the median part of the bridge, which mostly-obstructed a visitor’s view of open sewage pits. They also sprayed pine scent into the air - my grandmother would often say it smelled like “someone shit a pine tree.” Well, now the plastic barriers on the bridge are gone - the city seems to have accepted that this plant is a feature of the landscape. I don’t think they’ve sprayed pine scent in some time.
The police station moved from its old building to an old armory building, closer to the center of town - Diamond Park. Diamond Park is shaped like a diamond, the surrounding the park are two streets, lined with churches, and City Hall, and now the police station. Kids in Meadville on Friday and Saturday night used to go on “cruise night,” which basically meant driving in circles around the Diamond. Back when my dad was a young buttrock enthusiast, this was where young people would blare their rock-n-roll and drink cheap beer. The city cracked down on this practice when I was young, as hip-hop culture started taking over the cruise night scene and rattling bass became more common that squealing guitar solos, in case you want to conjecture about the intersection of culture and race in small-town western PA.
The old police station is now a small pet food manufacturer, not the major one in town. Dad’s Dog Food was the big local employer; my grandmother worked there for a time. Walmart bought up the factory years back, so now it manufactures dog food for Walmart. My uncle, an artisan employee of a metal fabrication shop, has been retired for a year - for years prior, they would sometimes have enough work for him, and often not. My mom, a specialist in printing technologies at a plastics manufacturing shop, has been unemployed for four years following a health scare that nearly killed her and left her disabled. Last I knew of him, my dad was still working at a large tool-and-die manufacturer, Channelock. They make tools and stamp other brand names on them - Mac tools, Craftsman, etc. You can hear a banging most hours of the day and night, as the giant metal press pops out individual pieces. It kills someone every couple years, but nobody would ever dare question whether the jobs are worth the risk.
One of my childhood best friends sent me his resume to give him some advice. His position at a retail store was eliminated. He has a Master’s degree, a wife and three kids, a house. He’s brewing beer in his spare time and I’ll help him drink some of it this week. Sometime this week we will eat at The Whole Darn Thing, my favorite sandwich shop in Meadville. As I typed that sentence, I had to ask my family whether it was still open. It is, thank god. You never know.
Grandma is watching Leave it to Beaver. Mom is looking up recipes on the internet - she’s had more time to focus on eating healthy since retiring. I’m going to get a sandwich at Arby’s - roast beef, plus curly fries and a Jamocha Shake. We don’t have these delicacies so close at hand in Portland.

10 Businesses with Strong Early Cash Flow
Cash is what fuels your business, so mastering cash flow is a key challenge for all businesses. In any business venture cash flow is among the most important pillars for the success of your enterprise.
Early cash flow can come in handy as it helps cover things that allow your business to operate. From stocking up your inventory, paying salaries, utilities, rent and other expenses – cash flow literally runs your business.
Positive cash flow or boosting your cash flow early on in your business is critical for your success. It is a key driver towards meeting longer-term business goals.
Cash Flow vs Profitability
Positive cash flow means that you have more money going into your business at any given time than you do coming out. Having more money coming gives you operating expenses and allows your business to pay off debts. Positive cash flow also lets you know where you stand if you are planning to expand.
Profitability, on the other hand, looks at a bigger picture. Simply put, profit is what you have left after all of your expenses are paid for. Your business can be profitable without being cash flow-positive—and you can have positive cash flow without actually making a profit.
Many businesses make the mistake of spending without consideration for the future. Negative cash flow such as buying excess inventory can tie up cash in inventory and hamper short and long term business goals.
Maintaining a healthy cash flow can be elusive for small businesses. A solid cash flow will not only help you pay for everything on time but also allows you the ease to focus more on your business than paying debts. To avoid a cycle of debt and boost cash earnings some businesses rake in more money sooner than others.
Best Business Ideas to Make Money Sooner Than the Rest
It can take a while for your small business to make money, but some businesses can make money sooner. Here are the best business ideas to make money faster.
Franchise
Franchising is a longer-term form of licensing. It is popular among service firms, such as restaurants and hotels to sell the rights to their brand and business model to third parties.
Franchising is seen as among the best business ideas to make money right from the beginning. The secret to franchising is that the businesses come with readymade operational models as well as brand awareness. This cuts through the process and time businesses spend developing and refining their operations.
A franchise also comes with a ‘playbook’ which is handy in driving sales while controlling costs as you have a business template to follow. This has allowed many franchisees to make an average of $60,000 dollars per year.
Photography Business
If you have an eye for composition, lighting or simply great shots, then photography might be your cup of tea. You can turn your creative outlet into a money-making business from your home.
Photography is a popular profession and hobby right now because camera gear is more affordable and consumer-friendly. Additionally, the availability of easy to use editing software is pushing more people to enter the industry. Photo editing software are plenty, ranging from decently priced ones to free options to give your pics a professional look.
Whether you have a passion for social events or corporate functions, photography provides many options. You can start your photography business by taking on your friends and family as your clients first.
To increase your visibility, post your work on social media such as Instagram and Facebook. You can also create your own website to help you increase your reach and grow your customer base. The perks include having your own studio at home as well as becoming the sole employee of your enterprise.
You can earn upwards of $34,000 per year depending on your workload, clientele and type of pictures you take.
However, people skills come in handy here as you need to get the trust of your clients by making them happy. This will eventually lead to more referrals and customers.
Makeup Artist
If you have a flair for enhancing the appearance of people, why not explore being a makeup artist.  All you need is a high school diploma or a GED to get your certificate in cosmetology.
As a makeup artist, your creative imagination can bring out the best in your clients. You can accentuate their positive features while smoothing out any flaws they might have.
This is a great way to earn some good cash (averaging $46,311 per year) as well as increasing your business network.
With images now a key tool for communicating online, more people are looking to makeup artists to get a professional quality photograph. Makeup artists are also used in photoshoots, weddings, fashion shows and performances.

The key here is your ability to make connections with people and make sure your plan is executed seamlessly. If you need help in this department, a course on project management can help give you the edge you need.
The special events industry continues to grow and there’s a lucrative market awaiting you on many fronts. Individuals and companies often find they lack the expertise and time to plan events themselves. This is when planners can step in and give these special events the attention they deserve.
As an event planner, you have your pick on whether to work for either corporate or social functions. Corporate includes not only companies but also charities where you host gala fundraisers, receptions and other events. These events are used by these organizations to help them gain public support and raise funds.
Thousands of these events are held each year. Some might require specialized event planning experience but you can find smaller local events to start out with. You can start by first working from home and gradually scale up. This will come in handy if you are on a shoestring budget.

Providing errand services like picking up dry cleaning or groceries is an easy way to start a business. An errand running business solves problems for people or businesses who are too busy to carryout these tasks. This can be as simple as picking up or delivering items and go on from there.
Your services can literally be anything from picking up dry cleaning, shopping, delivery taking mail to the post office or even filling cars with fuel. Armed with a valid driver’s license and an insured, licensed vehicle, your errand services can be an easy path into entrepreneurship. As entry to this business is relatively easy, you will, however, have to watch out for the competition. First, you will need to assess the market to see whether you have room to operate a profitable business. You will also need to devise a special offer for your clients to allow your business to grow in demand. Timeliness, dependability and trustworthiness are the hallmarks of a good errand service provider.
Child Care Service
Child care, also known as day care entails providing care and supervision of a child or multiple children. If you love kids, perhaps a child care venture might be the best business idea to make money.
As more and more Americans are taking on a second job, they are finding it ever more difficult to look after their children while they are at work. Child care offers parents the ease of mind that their children are well taken care of in their absence.
Child-care services can start from the comfort of your home offering opportunities for people to earn a median income of $9.81 per hour. Child-care services offer flexibility when it comes to the services you choose to offer and improve your cash flow.
You can start a child-care business easily in your home with just a few weeks of planning and a modest amount of startup cash. You can start a one-person operation with yourself at home and generate a comfortable income. If you have your own children, then you have the bonus of spending quality time with your children as well.
You may limit your clientele to children in certain age groups or tailor your operating hours to meet the needs of a particular market segment. Provide additional perks such as transportation between your center and the children’s homes and/or schools.
You need to be a people person, have a high tolerance for stress, have good insurance, and some management skills.
Freelance Writer
If you have mad writing skills, then a handy laptop is all you will need to venture into freelance writing.
With your writing business, you can offer your services to companies on a freelance basis.  By producing content on demand from clients you can test the waters by first looking at side gigs.

House Painter
House painting offers minimal financing to start up. However, a good painting job requires practice, precision, and patience. You can start your paint job as a part time gig and gradually build it up offering your services to homeowners, builders, landlords or interior designers.
Your work might be seasonal and fluctuate with the health of the economy. You can acquire the tools of your trade such as paints, cleaning solutions and brushes from any hardware store. The average pay for a Painting Contractor is $40,976 per year.
Landscaper
If you have a green thumb perhaps landscaping is your thing. You can offer services that include mowing the lawn; weed trimming; planting flowers, and trimming hedges and trees.
With experience, you can expand to designing lighting, patios, decks and walkways. Landscaping business owners earned anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000 in their first year and as much as $160,000 to $250,000 once they were in business a few years.

Owners of food truck businesses often earn an average monthly revenue between $5,000 – $20,000.
Cash flow is important, as it shows the financial state of your business. But not all businesses are able to generate this cash flow immediately.
