Spook-tober Day 1 — Decorating

So, technically, it’s October 2nd for almost two hour here, but it’s probably still the 1rst somewhere, right? Well, I don’t care anyway.
It’s my first time writing for an event (Maribat or otherwise) and I wanted to write both prompts for Spook-tober - Maribat Month and the Maribat Rare Pairs Month, but didn’t have time to start writing before 11pm.
This one's for Spook-tober, though it could also qualify as rarepair since it's a Stephinette (is that the correct shop name???), because Steph is my Queen (Cass too, but I wanted Steph today). Though they don't interact (yet) but I think I’ll write a follow up for other days' prompt, maybe (day 9 and 21, I’m looking at you,).
Anyway, let’s start.

“You sure you got the right address, miss?” The cab driver asked her with a skeptic expression. It would have been alright if the man hadn’t asked the same thing in at least twenty different ways during the ride.
“Yes, thank you Monsieur. I’m exactly where I wanted to be,” Marinette answered with a tight smile, like the twenty previous times. Giving him the money she owed him, she got out of the car to stand in front of the gigantic gate of Wayne’s Manor. The place was kind of intimidating.
Still hearing the car behind her when she reached the intercom, she turned toward it. The driver was shamelessly looking at her, probably waiting for her to get refused access.
“Are you waiting for something, sir?” She asked, tilting her head slightly.
“You’re gonna need a ride back, don’t ya? I’m already here, might as well,” he smiled at her with condescending amusement. Marinette was tempted to tell him that she would prefer to go back to the city on foot than to get into his car again. But her parents raised her better than that, so she only smiled politely.
“There is no need, sir, I really don’t know how long I’m going to stay here.”
“Yeah, right,” the man huffed, still staring at her.
Deciding to just ignore him, Marinette turned to push on the intercom’s only button. It took a minute before an elegant and accented voice responded.
“Hello, how may I help you?”
“Ah, hello sir. I’m Marinette, Jason asked me to come?”
“Indeed, Master Jason warned me to expect you.”
When the gate opened, Marinette made a point to turn around to smile and wave goodbye at the cab driver. She would cherish his dumbstruck expression for a long time.
Her victory was short lived, though, when she saw how long the march from the gate to the house was going to be. Jason better be on the brink of death. Or the world, she wasn’t picky.
When she finally got there, an old gentleman she thought might be Alfred was waiting for her.
“Miss Dupain-Cheng, I’m Alfred, the family’s butler, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” Alfred said with a kind smile and a nod.
“The pleasure is all mine, sir. And just Marinette is fine,” she told him kindly, walking into the house. “Jason is okay, right? He didn’t say why he wanted me here, and I have to admit that he got me worried.”
Jason had been determined to keep her as far away from his family as he could manage before, and the sudden change was really odd.
“I see,” Alfred said slowly, closing his eyes for a second. “Master Jason is alright, Miss Marinette, do not worry. He just… Well, why not let Master Jason explain the situation to you himself. If you would follow me.”
Marinette followed him for a couple minutes through a couple of corridors, before he opened the doors to… a battlefield.
She thought that, maybe, it was supposed to be a living room, but it was hard to say, under all those decorations. They were literally everywhere. Throwing on the couches, a couple of boxes were overturned in a corner, a couple of garlands of little cartoon ghosts hanging hazradly from the chandelier. It was a mess, but she could see that someone probably tried to… decorate? Maybe? It was a really bad job, though.
Jason and a man she assumed to be his brother were battling with a plastic pumpkin and a skeleton respectively, while two more men and a woman—probably also Jason’s siblings, she heard Bruce Wayne was kind of a serial adopter— were cheering on the sidelines and a brooding teenager was glaring at them. Everyone froze as soon as they realized that they weren’t alone anymore. Alfred only sighed, nodded at her before going back to where they came from.
“Hey! Pixie! Great, you’re here,” Jason exclaimed excitedly, letting go of the pumpkin he was shoving into his brother’s face and stauttered toward her.
“Jason, in the name of everything that’s holy, what the hell?” Marinette asked with a voice deceptively calm. She could see the woman and one of the men behind Jason wince at her tone. Good.
“Well, see, we wanna decorate the house for Halloween, now that it’s time—”
“Jason,” she interrupted incredulously. “We are in September!”
“Well, technically, it’s already October in Russia,” the man that had been fighting with Jason piped up.
“Yeah, what Timbers said,” Jason said with a serious nod while Marinette could only look at him in astonishment. “Anyway, Bruce said we can decorate all the room in the Manor like we wish if we can make this one presentable, without the help of Alfred. And I really want to make a cat theme for his bedroom, so I thought; hey, you know a designer…”
“I’m a fashion designer, Jason, not an interior designer!”
“Same difference, Pixie. You’re my only hope, all of them are hopeless in terms of good taste.”
Marinette pinched the bridge of her nose, ignoring the various protests from Jason’s sibling, before taking out her phone.
“So you proceeded to send me ‘Hey Pix,” she said, reading the message he sent her earlier with a bad imitation of his voice. “‘Need you at the manor asap, urgence lvl 3’ before ignoring me, making me think that the world was probably ending—”
“World ending is at least a lvl 5, Pix, come on,” Jason interrupted with an offended expression. She ignored him.
“—Forcing me to take a cab with a absolute jerk driver—”
“Why did you take a cab? You have a car!”
“Adrien took the car, he is visiting Chloé in New York. But that’s not the point. The point, Jason, is that all of that was because you needed me to help you decorate for a day that is literally in a month?”
“Hey, Halloween is a very important celebration,” Jason’s brother, the one that had been cheering the loudest, told her with a solemn expression.
“I’m French, I don’t care about Halloween,” she deadpanned.
“I’m sorry, what?” The one Jason had called Timbers, probably Tim Drake, looked pained at the very idea that someone could not be obsessed by Halloween.
“I mean, we used to make speciales and sales at the bakery, and I’ve been to a couple of costume parties, but we don’t really pay attention to Halloween until around the 25 of October.”
“That’s sacrilegious,” Jason said, and almost all the others agreed in a way or another.
“Maybe for you, Americans,” she told him with amusement. “But it doesn't change the fact that I’m not going to help you.”
What? Why?!” He exclaimed, his eyes widening.
“Because, one, I don’t have anything to gain from it,” she said, showing him one of her fingers before adding a second. “And two, do you know how long the walk between the cab and the door had been? And all of it just for decorations?”
“Aw, come on, Pix! Bruce is going to make Alfred judge, and I have projects for the cat theme!”
“There is nothing you can say that is going to make me change my—”
“Hey guys!” A cheerful voice suddenly interrupted her, the owner barging into the room like a whirlwind. The woman was slightly taller than her, with long blonde hair and blue eyes. She had a beautiful smile that brightened the room and Marinette could feel the hearts that were making their way in her eyes. The girl was cute. Uh oh. “You are decorating already?! Cool! Be right back, let me just grab my stuff!”
Then she was gone, and Marinette could only blink slowly, before turning back toward Jason.
“Alright, I’m in.”
“What? Why— Oh, no, no, no! You’re not going to crush on Steph—”
“Oh, her name is Steph? What a lovely name,” she mumbled, looking back in the direction she disappeared. “But if you don’t want my help, I can just ask for her number and let you fend for yourself with the decorations, you know.”
“Pixie!” Jason complained, making his sibling laugh or snicker at him.

Fun fact: when Marinette says that France doesn't care about Halloween until around October 25th, I’m talking from personal experience. I don’t know if it’s the same in all of France, but I grew up in Paris’ region (It’s not Paris Paris, but it’s like, the places all around and we call it régions parisienne) and they don’t care about it. Where I live, the shops don’t start selling Halloween themed candy before, like a week (maybe two?? when they start early) before Halloween and the children rarely go trick or treating. (I lived in this house for ~five/six years, and I’ve never got a child knocking for candy on Halloween.)
Again, I’m not saying it was like that for everyone in France, maybe it was only my city, but I thought it funny to have this opposition between Marinette and the Batkids.

Horrortale: technically an alternate timeline instead of au. after a neutral run where undyne's queen the core malfunctions and food becomes scarce and people resort to eating humans because sans suggested it. Aliza is the protag. latest thing that happened in the ongoing comic was Aliza agreeing to go with Papyrus to solve his last puzzle. as for the appearance of sans he has a HUGE hole on his head and a red eye. he got the hole from undyne when she got his magic eye which was going to be used to power the core. sans didnt die tho and killed the guards holding him down and just took whatever eye was on the ground and used it as a replacement for his magic eye that's powering the core. i quote first words he said after putting the eye in his socket "who the fuck took my phone?". then the magic eye went apeshit and broke the core again. oh and also he made alphys braindead by quite literally scrambling her brain. yeah this au is rough sans hasn't really eaten anything since the core was destroyed since he decided not to eat any humans.
Dusttale: i think this was originally a korean au? basic rundown: too many genocide runs sans goes apeshit and tries to get his Lv up by killing monsters himself man went fuckin insane kills his brother blah blah blah edgy angsty au the ghost of papyrus haunts him n stuff. sans literally just looks the same except he has his hood on and sometimes artists draw him with papyrus's scarf. the cool artists draw him with his hood on and has the hood completely cover his face so u can only see his glowing pupils. although people call him dust sans he's actually named murder sans
Killer: so frickin similar to dusttale except sans goes apeshit because of the human being like "join me lmao". three different outcomes come from this. i think it was 1 sans joins human 2 sans joins human kills human later on 3 kills human or something. friends with color sans who is basically his impulse control. pretty sure his soul's fucked up and Color sans tries to make his soul un-fucked but Nightmare comes in and fucks up the progress. he has white shorts, his eye sockets are constantly pitch black and leaking tar or something also has a weird target thingy on his chest. OH YEAH ALSO HE HAS BEEF WITH UNDERSWAP SANS ALMOST FORGOT. basically swap sans tried to make killer good and then they had a fight, swap sans lost and was on the verge of dying thankfully swap papyrus was able to save him in time i think
Dreamtale: Dream isn't in the drawing but his brother, Nightmare is. Sooo he used to not look all goooy and have tentacles n stuff but then he ate a couple hundred apples and yeah. he's six years old apparently. Nightmare and Dream are supposed to be guardians of a tree that has 500 golden apples and 500 black n goopy apples. the golden aples are positive and the goop ones are negative. you're not supposed to eat either of them cus bad shit happens. Dream and Nightmare live in a village and for whatever reason they're all dicks to Nightmare because ooughh he's the guardian of negativity that's not baller. he also goes apeshit (do u see a pattern here) and eats a goopy apple n then becomes the goop man he is today. he fuckin eats 999 apples jesus christ. and the last one is eaten by Dream because if u eat all 1000 apples u become unstoppable and immortal. so that would be a bad thing if nightmare got the last one. wop wop wop these dude aren't sanses they only have the body of one if that makes sanse.
Error: manlet. he's literally an error and that's why he's like that. also he's technically not a sans now, the redesign for him was so that he could be in the creator's webcomic named Lucidia. Error sans, aka the destroyer of aus, finds aus to be mistakes so he tries to get rid of them. his process of doing this is simple: get the human soul to the void so that they can't reset, destroy the au. he primarily attacks using his strings which can wrap around one's soul and control them. he like some aus like outertale because of how open and empty it is. he likes to be alone and has haphephobia. if u touch him he'll glitch out and possibly crash. he crashes whenever gets overwhelmed. said crashing causes him to shut down and reboot and he's powerless while doing so. he's actually pretty easy to beat if you know how to push his buttons the right way. in the og ask error blog made by his creator Loverofpiggies he kidnaps Swap sans who tries to help Error become a better person. this ends horribly as error leaves Swap sans in the void who then becomes an error aswell due to being alone in the void too long. Error actually regrets doing that to swap sans
Aftertale: OK FUN FACT THE SANS OF THIS AU, WHO'S NICKNAMED "Geno" IS ERROR. aftertale is a comic made by LoverofPiggies it's been SOOOO long since i last read it so i cant really give a good summary. but anyways Geno is trapped in the loading screen with the human and will die if he leaves the loading screen. eventually from being in the loading screen for too long after the events of aftertale he becomes Error.
OOF WOWIE THERE'S SO MUCH TO GO
Underfresh: he's not even a sans either. "Fresh" is a parasite inhabiting a skeleton. his birthday is on 4/20 which is ironic cus he doesn't like drugs. he censors swears. he speaks 90's lingo and dresses like a neon sign. for some reason he has eyebrows and a gold tooth. the glasses he has can change text but normally defaults to "YOLO". he can't feel anything since he has no soul of his own and just latches onto the host's. instead he learns how to act from the people around him. not being able to feel actually bothers him a LOT
Echotale: Aka Gaster sans. uhhh this one was also a comic if i remember correctly. basically Frisk and G!Sans are the only ones in the au and they're trying to find the core to fix the fucked up timeline that they're in but the core keeps changing positions so that sucks.
Swapfell: originally made by Khhoppang who left social media. Started out as an Alphys x Undyne au so only those two were designed but Kh was planning to design more of the characters. before they could people had a field day with the idea of mashing two aus together and SO many people came up with their own designs for sans and papyrus. Khhoppang left social media because they got overwhelmed with all the art reposters and stuff, pretty sad. the appearance of the sans in that au is the purple one with a scythe (i dont think he has a scythe in the og design).
Swapfell Red: so basically this is the swapfell made by people that isn't Khhoppang. community made per se. Sans's appearance changes constantly because as said before many people made many different designs. typically he just looks like Swap sans but with red high heel boots and his color scheme fits underfell
Fellswap (gold): Au made by blackggggum. so swapfell is underswap turned fell, fell swap is underfell swapped it takes a bit to understand that. his appearance is somewhat similar to Swapfell red. He's kind to his friends but if ur his enemy he'll fucking deck you. he's blind in his left eye, the leader of the royal guard, and secretly into dressmaking. fun fact in this au Papyrus has autism
Xtale: uuuuhhhh so Cross is a complicated one. he's part of the royal guard along with papyrus. has beef with xgaster. responsible for the downfall of his au and then Underverse happens and Ink is all "oh cool someone to mess with" and they became friends for a bit then shit hit the fan
Underfell: OOOOO YES UNIRONICALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITES. So Underfell sans is actually a very powerful mf and constantly has his magic eye activated because he has so much magic. This au is also technically an alternate timeline where monsters "lost their humanity" as the creator put it. so basically trust in the underground is scarce. Sans and papyrus, contrary to many interpretations i fucking hate, are actually on good terms (and no sans doesn't call papyrus "boss" the creator said if he does he'd do it ironically and papyrus would hate it). Fun facts he pays Grillby in socks (grillby accepts the socks as payment and wears them), if u make grillby laugh he gives u a jacket that looks like his and it's heavily implied that sans made him laugh because their jackets are similar
Underswap: ah yes another classic that i love as well. originally made by PopcornPr1nce who fled social media because they hated how the majority fandom treated Underswap (Blueberry and Carrot were popular names for the fanon swap papyrus and sans). Swap sans is constantly infantilized by the community which sucks and i hate it so i draw my own very super cool version of him whom i kin because i am also very super cool.
Outertale: mainly an aesthetic au pretty sure there's no comic of it. basically, instead of underground they in space. outer sans dies in underverse after like minutes of screentime lmao
Epictale: a comic made by Yugogeer. the og comic was retconned and the creator loathes the original version and made a reboot that's much better. Sans actually dies very early in it because Yugo hates how Sans is almost always focused on in aus. also the creator hates how meme-y their sans has become (like him saying bruh every single sentence, using a rubber chicken as a weapon, cookies, etc.) he's friends with Cross but not in canon. He has a purple magic eye that makes him immortal and i think only epic gaster could remove it which is how sans was able to be killed when he fought gaster.
Temmietale: it's undertale but everyone is temmie, don't question it
Trainertale: it's undertale but it's Pokemon, don't question it
Dancetale: it's undertale but you dance instead of fight, don't
Mobtale/Mafiatale: im unsure if mobtale and mafiatale are separate or not but they are very similar. basically undertale but mafia it's self explanatory
Undertale: no clue which au is this one, nope not at all/j
Bittytale or whatever idk: so take sans, make him small. boom. never understood this au
THAT BASTARD INK: HOOO BOY SAVED THE WORST FOR LAST. FUCK THIS GUY/j. THIS DUDE. IS THE REASON IM STILL INTO UNDERTALE AUS. I LOVE EM SO MUCH. also technically not a sans. He comes from an unfinished au and ripped his own soul to escape said au and became an outcode. for so long he was just a soulless husk until someone drew him and he got splashed with paint which let him feel. soon he learned to keep the paint in vials so that he can be able to feel 24/7. And then he learned how to create things with a paintbrush and the paint and spent time alone drawing up his own world until a portal appeared and took him to the multiverse. now he encourages artists to keep creating aus. he's the protector of aus in the sense that he keeps other outcodes from disrupting the script of the au, so if it's pacifist and an outcode tries to kill people he'd stop them, if it's genocide and an outcode tried to help them he'd stop them. no matter what he wants the au to stay on script. fun fact the creator of ink and the creator of error never had them interact with each other in canon, that was all the fandom's doing. Contrary to popular belief he's not really considered "good" his alignment is officially "Chaotic neutral". I personally interpret him a lot more chaotic than in canon because it's fun but he's a pretty chill guy actually. he can just be a bit of an ass sometimes. According to the creator of Ink (who is Comyet) his interpretation in Underverse is not canon compliant. one of the biggest canon things that underverse contradicts is Ink deliberately not taking his vials. if he were to do that in canon he'd become a husk again which is the equivalent of him "dying". he was described as a walking corpse by Comyet, without the vials he can't function anymore. Like Error he's pretty easy to beat if you know his weaknesses. also he has fears of empty spaces and being alone
off topic kinda but i very much love how Error and Ink are opposites yet parallel even though they were completely written without the other in mind. Error believes getting rid of aus is getting rid of anomalies. Ink believes people interfering with aus are anomalies. Error loves emptiness, Ink hates emptiness. list goes on it's funky fresh.

In order to get the diamonds, Tango, Keralis, and BDubs placed down a sign saying “Gem is Great!” and Gem used a glow inksack on it.
Etho: “So..What is this? Do you have an ego, or this a motivational thing, or..?” He said, while laughing
Iskall: “I think its really funny that you have set your base up in the middle of a birch forest.” Gem: “I love birch forests! Do you not like my birch forest? Iskall: “I love it, yeah.” Gem: “This is the best biome in the game, Iskall.” Iskall: “Mmmm..” Etho: “I’m pretty sure I heard Iskall talking earlier that like, of all the biomes in the game, there was one he hated more than anything. Gem: “Oh really? And what was that one?” Iskall: “..Taiga.” Gem: “Taiga.. That’s true, thats a good one, thats a good one.” Iskall: “Don’t like Taiga.” Gem: “Mhm.” Etho: “Which one do you hate more than anyone?” Iskall: “..Diorite fields. Thats a bad one.” Etho: “Yeah thats a bad one.” Gem: “Didn’t know about that one. Well make sure to avoid’em. Birch forests are really good.” Iskall: “I’m a big fan of birch forests.” Gem: “Yeah, me too, me too. I’m glad we’re on the same page :) This is so beautiful! All the white and- and the like zebra stripes! is fantastic.” Iskall: “I..Um.. Yes.”

Silas and Lily - Part 2

Hello everyone! Remember these two? Well, here is the continuation of their story. This second part was commissioned by @dracodenticulus​. It was so fun to write this piece. Thank you so much for commissioning me. 
Warnings: medical talk, gore mention, sexual fantasies
It takes about three months for Silas’ legs to fully heal.
His tibias healed within the first month, thanks to a combination of Lily’s magic and her applying bone meal ointment to the bones twice a day. Lily told him it would have taken about six months for a living human’s bone to heal naturally.
“Would mine have healed naturally? Without the magic?” Silas asks one night.
Lily is sitting in front of him. An anatomy book opened to a page with a diagram of a human leg sits on her lap. The page is scribbled with notes.
Spread out around her are several necromancy books. Some are old, with fraying pages and ink text. While the rest of the books are new, with a modern design layout. One of the books even has a skeleton guide that moves through the book with the reader.
She looks up from the book. “No. You need to be living with a beating heart and pumping blood for natural healing. And you, Silas, are not living.”
Silas grimaces. “So, I require an unnatural healing.”
Everything about me is unnatural, Silas thinks. A dead man from the late 1800s roaming the streets of this modern world is an abomination.
“I wouldn’t say unnatural because all magic is natural.” Lily pauses for a moment. “Supernatural healing and magical healing are better ways to describe this method.”
He scoffs. “And how often is this method used?”
Lily’s voice is gentle. “A lot, Silas. A kid gets hit by a car, a mother dying from cancer, or a construction worker has an accident at work; they all receive this treatment. Sometimes people need a little help, a nudge in the right direction, to get better.”
“Even with the undead?”
“Yes. How do you think Narron keeps his body from falling apart? Certainly, aren’t any skinny teas or those crystals he loves.”
Silas snorts.
When the bones set, their texture and colors begin to change.
When Silas was pulled out of the coffin, his bones were porous and brittle. Decades of rotting in a box with no necromancer to keep him in shape left his body nearly ruined. Lily’s great-great-grandfather didn’t have her knowledge or resources. The runes and markings he etched into Silas’ skin did not stop time from damaging his body.
However, when Lily began pouring her magic into his healed bones, they began to shine. Then that glossy shine changed into a wet, gooey texture.
Silas thought something went wrong, but Lily assured him it was normal.
“Looks nasty,” Silas mutters.
Lily is kneeling in front of him, examining the bone. Todd is sitting beside her, an intelligent gleam in his eyes.
“Yes, it does.”
“Why?”
“It will ensure that the muscles, tendons, and skin will stick and form around the bone.” She reaches behind her for a box of plastic wrap. “This will keep the bones from drying out and stop any hair or dust from sticking to you.”
“I did not know so much scientific stuff went into magic.”
“For many, magic and science are two sides of the same coin.”
Silas nods. “I remember hearing that when I was alive.”
Healing the bones was easy. But the reforming of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and skin proved to be a challenge.
Every morning and night, Lily would tend to his legs. She was determined to reform the damaged tissue. But the magic usage left her drained and exhausted. She would sleep most of the day and go to bed early each night. Todd was constantly around her, sitting on her lap or chest while she napped.
Seeing her so exhausted hurts Silas. As much as he wants to walk again, Silas considers stopping this entire endeavor. He has caused Lily nothing but problems since he was dug up. She left her family because of him, had to spend money on him, deal with registering him, and now she is so exhausted that she can barely stay awake.
He’s always caused problems when he was alive, and nothing has changed since he died.
One morning, during the second month of his healing, Lily woke up looking terrible. Her eyes were heavy and dark. The normal shine in her hair was gone. Her skin looked dull and ashen. Even her aura looked dimmer.
Todd followed close behind her. The cat’s tail twitters anxiously.
“Lily,” Silas says.
“Hm?” She looks confused as if she doesn’t recognize Silas for a moment. “Oh, morning Silas. Let me drink my coffee, and we’ll start, ok?”
“That’s what I want to talk to you about.”
She yawns. “What about it?”
“Take a seat.”
Lily flops onto the couch. Todd jumps onto her lap. He’s purring so loud Silas can hear him.
“What’s up, Silas?” She yawns again. “You, ok?”
Silas’ heart twists. Even when she is feeling terrible, she is still putting Silas first.
“I am fine, darlin. But you should take a break today.”
“Why?”
“Because, and I don’t mean to sound like an ass, but you look like shit.”
Lily scoffs. “I’m just a little tired, Silas. I’ll be fine after my coffee.”
“Darlin, I’m ain't making a suggestion. I’m telling you to take a break.”
She scowls at him. Amber red spiderwebs through the black and muted greens in her aura. He can feel the prickle of irritation in the air. Todd sits up and meows at Lily, but she ignores the cat.
Silas is quick to raise his hands. “Look, I don’t want to tell you what to do. And I am eternally grateful that you are helping me, Lily. You are the strongest magic user I’ve met, and I know you can keep going. But I’m worried about you. I don’t want you pushing yourself too far and hurting yourself.”
The amber-red fractures cool as her face softens.
“Silas—” Another yawn interrupts her. She rubs her eyes and leans against the back of the couch.
Todd stands on his back legs and paws at Lily’s face. She waves him away.
“Silas,” she looks back at him, “I think you’re correct that I should take a break today.”
“Good. Why don’t you lay down here, Lil? And I’ll get you some coffee.”
Lily lays on the couch. “I need food.”
“I can try to make you something.”
Lily shakes her head. “I can order something off my phone. Todd, go get it for me, please.”
Todd chirps and dashes out of the room. He returns a moment later, dragging the phone and yowling the whole time.
Lily orders a small feast. A stack of pancakes for herself. A plate of eggs, bacon, and toast for Silas.
The food arrives an hour later. When Silas opens the door, the deliverer looks like they were going to pass out. The blood drains from the elf’s face, and his eyes grow comically wide. If Silas wasn’t so worried about Lily, he would have made a scary face at the elf and laughed.
Silas slams the door and rolls his wheelchair back towards Lily. Todd is still on her chest.
“Everything ok?” she asks.
“Poor delivery guy looked like he was about to pass out.”
Lily snorts. “Undead humans are rare nowadays. Remember the lady in the market?”
Silas grimaces at the memory. An older woman nearly fainted when she saw Lily pushing Silas down the chip aisle in the market.
“Come on, let’s eat,” Silas says.
Lily devours all her pancakes and most of the bacon. The changes in her appearance are instantaneous. Her skin looks better, her eyes are brighter, and her aura is clear. She still looks tired, but resting for a day or two should fix that.
Silas takes his time eating. He does not need to eat, but it tastes good.  And after not eating for decades, food is a delicacy he never wants to give up.
As he eats, a memory of a woman handing him a plate of eggs and bacon dances at the edge of his mind. Her face is a blurry mess, but he can remember her dark red dress with blue stitching. And her bare forearms and hands were weathered from age and the sun. Whoever she was, the memory of her makes his chest warm.
Silas replays the memory in his mind hoping that something else will come back, but there’s nothing.
“Silas?”
He jumps in surprise. Lily’s brow is furrowed, and her mouth is drawn down in worry.
“Are you ok?” she asks.
“Yes, sorry. Just a memory.”
“A memory? Of what?”
“A woman, handing me a plate of breakfast. I don’t know who she was, though.”
Lily sits her plate on the floor for Todd to lick clean. “It is normal for reanimated humans to have their memories come back. Smells, sounds, and tastes can trigger these memories.”
“Think I’ll remember why I was killed?”
Her face hardens. “I hope not, Silas. Those memories can be difficult to work through. And some things are not worth remembering.”
Silas looks down at his plate.
“I’m gonna lay down for a bit,” Lily says, “ok?”
“Of course. I’ll clean this up.”
“Thank you, Silas.”
It takes Lily two days to fully recover. Two days of eating and resting is what Lily required. Her skin is full of life, her hair shines, and her eyes are bright. But more important is her aura. The swirling black and greens are back to normal.
On the morning of the third day, Lily decides to continue working on Silas’ legs.
There is an increase in healing after this. The muscles, tendons, and ligaments take to Silas' bones faster than before. And by the end of the second month, his legs are almost entirely healed. All that Lily has to do was weave the skin over the fresh tissue.
“Look at that; your legs are almost done,” Lily says with a grin.
Silas, however, grimaces at the sight of his skinless legs. “Almost.”
“That break was definitely needed.” Lily stands and claps Silas on the shoulder.
As she moves behind him, searching for more plastic wrap, he studies his legs. The pink and red flesh is off-putting. Woven into the pink flesh and tissue are softly glowing runes and sigils.
“Lily, why is it all pink and red?”
“Because of my magic. The color will fade, but the muscles and tendons will work.” She kneels back in front of him, box in hand. “Eventually, the runes will need to be recharged, but you won’t have to worry about that for a couple decades.”
She wraps the legs, taking care to be gentle.
“Hey, why don’t I feel anything when you do that?”
“I didn’t give you any nerve endings.”
“I don’t need those?”
Lily glances up at him. “No. That’s what the runes beneath your skin are for. When your skin is applied and connects to the tissue, then you’ll be able to feel sensations.”
“Is it possible to form nerve endings with magic?”
“Yes, but it is not usually a doctor's first choice.” Lily finishes wrapping his legs, a satisfied look on her face.
“Why not?”
She drapes a light blanket over his lap. “Because it is a very painful process. Magic and medicine can knock someone out, but the person needs to be awake to tell the doctors if the process is working. Knocking someone out over and over again is not ideal. So, doctors often use runes like what I placed on your legs to ensure their patients can feel again.”
“Even if it’s a small area? Like from a burn? Or a badly broken bone?”
Lily pushes the wheelchair out to the kitchen. “If it’s a small area of nerves that need repairing, then the doctors will call in magic users. However, if it’s a massive area of damage, doctors strongly advise against nerve regrowth. They rely on magic.”
“The power of magic.”
“It is an amazing thing.”
Reforming his skin is a quicker process. Lily explained it is similar to a full-thickness skin graft. The difference is the skin she uses does not belong to Silas. And she will be using her magic to ensure the skin graft spreads along his legs.
By the end of the third month, Silas has functioning legs.
What bothers Silas the most, though, is his lower legs looked like they belong to a living person. The skin has a healthy flesh tone and is soft to the touch. Beneath the skin, Silas could feel the warmth of living flesh. The lack of leg hair is strange. He remembers being a hairy man.
“Lily?”
Lily glances up from the books she is closing and stacking in the corner of the living room. “Yes?”
“The color will fade, right?”
She looks sad for a moment. “Unfortunately, yes. You need a beating heart to pump blood through your body. And a healthy blood flow is what will give you a healthy skin tone.”
“I thought you said that.”
“If it bothers you, I can use my magic to change your skin tone.”
Silas waves his hand. “No, no need for that, darlin. You’ve done so much for me already.”
She continues gathering her supplies from the floor. Todd lounges on an opened book, unbothered and lazy. When she reaches for the book, but Todd playfully swats at her. She decides to leave him and the book alone.
“Darlin?”
“Hm?”
“Why isn’t there any hair on the skin?”
“It takes a while for hair to regrow on a living person. But since you are not living, you will have no hair growth.”
Silas pats the top of his head. “Why haven’t I lost my head hair, then?”
“My great-great-grandfather set a sigil on your head to ensure you do not lose your hair.”
“Really?”
“Yup.”
“Why?”
Lily shrugs. “Who knows. I assume he didn’t want you to lose all your humanity. Or maybe he thought you would look better with hair.”
“I’m glad he kept my hair.”
Lily stands up. She winces at the sound of her back popping. Silas is both jealous and slightly terrified at the sound her body made. He misses cracking and popping his bones without worrying about his body literally falling apart.  
She walks towards Silas. Her free arm is outstretched so her fingers can graze along his right cheek. Her fingers are so warm he thinks his undead skin will burn away. Hell, for a moment, Silas thinks his entire body will burn up, and all that will remain of him will be a smoldering pile of ash.
“I am glad he kept your hair, too,” she whispers.
Her fingers slide away, and then she’s gone, leaving Silas alone in the living room.
He touches his cheek, amazed that the cold skin still carries a hint of her warmth. When the warmth of her touch fades, Silas can still feel her fingers on his cheek. And the tingles have yet to leave his body.
A meow gets his attention.
Todd is sitting on the opened book, an amused and knowing look in the cat’s eyes. His tail flicks. Silas can imagine a shit-eating grin on the cat’s face.
“Shut up.”
 Todd chirps in amusement before settling back on his opened book.

The first time Silas tries to walk, it does not go well. Similar to before, he ends up face down on the floor.
“Son of a bitch!” Silas shouts.
“Dammit, Silas, I told you not to try yet.”
Silas can feel Lily’s footsteps vibrating through the floor.
He pushes himself up onto his forearms. He glances up at Lily, who is both worried and annoyed. He immediately regrets trying to stand and walk on his own.
Lily crouches beside him. “Are you ok?”
Yeah,” he glances away. “Just my ego is hurt.”
She helps him back into the wheelchair. While he silently nurses his hurt pride, Lily examines his legs.
“Nothing is broken.” She sounds relieved.
“Then why did I fall? Felt like my legs were jelly.”
“Because you haven’t walked in almost a century, Silas. Your mind remembers walking, but the muscles in your legs are new. And they do not remember.”
He rubs the side of his head. “So, will I ever walk again?”
“Yes, you just need to learn again. We’re going to visit Narron tomorrow.”
Silas grimaces. He knows he shouldn’t dislike Narron; after all, he is the reason Silas has working legs. But the fact that Narron knows how Silas feels about Lily makes Silas uncomfortable. The damn lich knows too much.
“Why?” Silas grumbles.
“He will help us with the physical therapy aspect of your healing. Plus, he wanted to see how your legs turned out.”
Silas frowns. “Does he doubt you?”
“Narron? Doubt me?” Lily laughs. “No. But having a thousand-something-year-old lich examine you, and my work, can’t hurt. If I messed up anywhere on your legs, Narron can find that mistake and fix it.”
Silas glances at his legs nervously. “Do you think you messed up?”
“No, but if I did, then Narron will find the mistake before it starts causing problems.”
The next day, they are back at Narron’s shop.
The shop is the same as before. Massive, with shelves full of books, potions, and jars of ingredients. The caged creatures, however, are now lined up on one wall. The garden section looks thicker and darker. And the glowing little fairies are still hovering throughout the store.
Unlike before, Narron isn’t there to greet them at the front counter. Instead, a goblin is behind the counter, cutting trimmings from plants. The glowing fairies take the clippings from the goblin and fly to different areas of the store.
The goblin turns around when he hears Lily and Silas enter the shop. Silas recognizes him from the last time they were here.
Silas remembers meeting very few goblins during his time alive. At that time, they mostly stayed close to orcs and trolls. If they were in a town or city, the goblins always had an orc or troll escort. Rarely did goblins venture through human cities alone.
The goblin beams and steps around the counter. “Lily!”
“Vot!”
Vot is similar to the goblins Silas remembers seeing. Just over four feet, with deep green skin, and long pointy ears, adorned in silver jewelry. His hair is pulled back in a waist-length braid.
His apron is covered in dirt and soil. A bundle of flowers sticks out of one of the apron pockets. A belt of gardening tools hangs around his waist.
“I would hug you, but,” Vot holds up his dirt-stained hands. “I’m a bit dirty.”
“When are you not, Vot?”
“Good point. How are you?” Vot glances at Silas. “The both of you?”
“We’re good, Vot,” Lily says. Silas nods in agreement.
“Wonderful!” Vot looks happy. “Can I help you with something? Or you here to see the big lich himself?”
“We have an appointment with Narron.”
“Of course, of course.” Vot glances towards the back room.
Silas follows his gaze. A curtain is drawn over the doorway towards the back room. Sparkling pink and blue light peeks out from beyond the curtain. The hum of voices and conversation is barely heard over the buzzing of magic.
“He’s taking a bit longer with his current customer, but he should be done soon,” Vot says.
“Of course,” Lily says. “We’ll look around.”
“Please do. And if you need anything, yell for me.”
Vot returns behind the counter.
Lily barely pushes Silas forward when the curtain to the backroom is thrown open. A woman walks out holding an undead cat in her arms. The cat is rubbing against the woman’s face, purring and chirping loudly. Narron is beside her, an arm draped over her shoulders, as he stoops down to talk to her. She’s nodding and wiping her tear-stained face with her free hand.
Based on her aura, Silas can tell she is also a magic-user. Beneath the sorrow and relief, Silas can see a variety of splattered colors. Maybe an alchemist or potion maker.
“If you have questions or concerns with Butter here,” Narron hands the woman a card, “Call me anytime. No matter the time of day, call me.”
The woman takes the card. “Thank you so much, Narron. Thank you.”
“You are very welcome, my dearest potion maker.” Narron’s hand settles on her cheek for a brief moment. He pulls his hand away when he sees Lily and Silas. “Vot, will you check her out?”
“Of course, Narron,” Vot says.
The woman and her undead cat turn to Vot while Narron motions Lily and Silas to follow him into the backroom.
The backroom is neater this time, but the air is thick with magic.
“Oh, Narron.” Lily’s lip is curled up in disgust. “What happened in here?”
He sighs. He sounds tired, but irritation and anger flicker beneath. “I was fixing a mistake for that woman out there. Her familiar passed, and she went to a necromancer to bring him back. However, whoever did it was a fucking fool, Lily.”
“Oh gods, what happened?”
“The cat’s soul was barely even there. More corpse than living cat.” He sighs and rubs his boney temples. “Poor woman.”
“You managed to help her?” Silas asks.
“Yes, but she was carrying around her half-dead cat for a whole day. The mental pain that caused her is indescribable,” Narron says.
The anger around Narron darkens before cooling.
“Did you find out who did the reanimating?” Lily asks.
“Yes. And I’m going to call the DON tomorrow.” He pauses. “Might even pay that idiot a visit myself.”
“They deserve a visit.”
Narron is lost in thought for a moment before he claps his hands. “How may I help you today, my gorgeous belladonna?”
“Silas’ legs are healed,” Lily gestures to Silas, “But he is unable to walk. Can you help with that?”
Narron’s boney face looks smug. “Of course, he cannot walk. The man hasn’t walked in decades; he can’t just start strutting his stuff like before. But to answer your questions, my darling death bringer, yes, I can help you with that.”
Lily bumps Silas’ shoulder. “Told you he can help.”
Silas grunts in response.
“Before you can start walking, cowboy, I need to examine your legs. A single miscalculation or improperly placed sigil and your legs may fall apart. May I examine your legs?”
Silas nods.
Narron moves the blankets and begins examining Silas’ new legs. Lily hovers over Narron’s shoulder, watching what he’s doing the entire time.
The feeling of Narron’s boney fingers ghosting over his skin makes Silas squirm. But worst is the magic. Narron’s magic is bright and invasive compared to Lily’s. It weaves through his flesh and bones, examining the foundations and structure Lily built.
It feels like forever before Narron pulls away. Silas sighs in relief.
“You did well, my darling student,” Narron says.
Lily smiles. “His legs are, ok? No mistakes?”
“No mistakes.
“Told you, you didn't make any mistakes, Lil,” Silas says.
Lily smiles and looks away. Narron glances at him, a smirk on his boney face.
“So,” Silas clears his throat, embarrassed about being caught, “What do we do about me not being able to walk?”
“You begin physical therapy,” Narron says.
“Do we go to someone?” Lily asks.
“If he was a living man, I would suggest a doctor. However, Silas is undead, and most doctors do not concern themselves with undead patients.”
Lily scoffs. “Are you serious? I know vets who assist necromancers with reanimated animals.”
“Why won’t doctors help reanimated humans?” Silas asks.
“A doctor's sworn oath only applies to living patients,” Narron explains. “Veterinarians, on the other hand, changed their oath decades ago to help necromancers who have a limited understanding of animal anatomy.”
“What do we do then?” Lily asks. “Go talk to a vet?”
Silas has never met a veterinarian before, but he’s seen vet shows on the tv. He can imagine Lily wheeling him into an office full of dogs, cats, and birds. Talking to a doctor with a pocket full of treats, who looks perplexed that an undead man is in their office.
“Oh, no, no, no. You will have to do most of this work yourself.” Narron leans back and grabs a tablet from a nearby desk. “But the internet is full of helpful videos and informative articles.”
Narron taps the screen, which somehow responds to his skeleton fingers. A moment later, he turns the tablet around to show Silas and Lily a list of youtube videos. All the videos are physical therapists and doctors showing viewers learning to walk exercises. Beginner levels that involve stretching and contracting muscles, to advanced exercises that involve stepping onto a stool.
“These videos will help you learn to walk again, Silas,” Narron says.
Silas is unsure. As is Lily.
“Are you sure, Narron?” Lily asks.
“Yes.” Narron turns to Silas. “The magic runes in your legs will assist with your relearning, Silas.”
“How long do you think it will take him to relearn?” Lily asks.
Narron glances towards her. “It depends on him, but I assume he will relearn faster than a living person.”
“Alright, Narron. Thank you.”
“You are very welcome, my lovely death blossom.” Narron stands. “Before I forget, I have something for the both of you.”
Narron searches through several nearby bags. He lets out a triumphant noise when he finds the bag he was looking for.
“Narron, what did you get us?” Lily asks as she takes the bag.
“Oh, just some gifts for my favorite student and her dashing cowboy.”
Inside the bag are several whiskey bottles, a couple boxes of cigars, several metal tins, and a thin wooden box.
“I assume that tongue of yours has been working, right, Silas?” Narron asks.
“Yes, sir. Been working like a charm.”
“His mood has improved greatly with being able to taste,” Lily says, looking in the bag.
“Oh? Wonderful to hear. So, what are your favorite things to taste so far?” Narron asks.
Silas thinks for a moment. “Probably this white spaghetti stuff Lil bought a few days ago.”
“It’s called chicken alfredo, Silas.” Lily glances between him and Narron. “I’m gonna go leave this bag at the front counter. Be right back.”
Silas nods.
“Go ahead, my lovely death blossom. We’ll be right behind you.”
Lily leaves the room.
“So, anything else you miss tasting?” Narron asks.
Silas thinks for a moment. “I remember trying hot chocolate once. I would love to try that again.”
“That is easy to get nowadays. Anything else you miss? Or maybe,” Narron leans towards Silas, “It’s someone that you miss feasting on.”
Silas grunts and pushes the lich away. “Shut it, you.”
Narron laughs. “I am only playing, my sweet cowboy.”
He pushes Silas to the front of the store.
Lily is conversing with Vot while a couple fairies play in her hair. She’s laughing and smiling. If Lily notices the fairies, she does not react to them. But she’s beautiful.
“You know,” Narron whispers in Silas’ ear, “have you thought about what we talked about last time?”
“No.”
“Liar. You think about it often, don’t you?”
Silas gives him a dirty look. “Shut it.”
Narron snickers. “I am only trying to help you. The both of you.”
Silas looks at Narron, confused, but he’s ignoring him now as he pushes Silas towards the counter where Lily stands.
When Lily looks at Silas, her eyes are sparkle. The glowing fairies playing in her hair look like stars shimmering in the night sky. She smiles and says his name in greeting before turning to Narron.
“Thank you for everything, Narron.”
“You are most welcome, my deathly beauty.” Narron grasps Silas’s shoulder. “And you take care, cowboy, remember what we were talking about.”
If Silas could blush, he would have been.

Learning to walk again is harder than Silas expected.
He was skeptical that the youtube videos would help; he even called a few of them dumb. But they turned out to be truly helpful and informative. Silas did not expect it to be so exhausting.

“I know.” Lily sits on the couch with him. “But it’s a good thing, Silas. It means the magic and your muscles are working.”

“Here, let me rub them.”
The couch shifts, then she’s pushing up the legs of his sweatpants. He thought the fuzz inside the pants were soft and warm, but they do not compare to Lily’s hands. Soft, warm, and thrumming with magic.

“Are you ok?”

The next time they visited Narron, Silas walked into the store behind Lily.
Narron was at the front counter when he saw them.

“We thought you could do one last check-up on his legs. Just to make sure everything is ok,” Lily says.

The check-up is quick. Narron detects no problems with the bones or muscles. Or any issues with Lily’s magic.
“Lily, I am so proud of you. Your magic has exceeded anything I could have imagined.” Narron turns to Silas. “And you, my deathly cowboy, are most lucky to have a necromancer like Lily looking after you.”
“Ay, Narron, you and your praises,” Lily laughs as she looks down at the ground.
Silas takes her hand in his. “He’s right, Lil. You are amazing. And I am so lucky to have been found by you. Thank you for everything, darlin.”
Lily looks like she’s about to pass out, but then she smiles and swats at Silas.
“Flirt. You’ve been around Narron too much.”
Narron laughs. “That is not my influence, my dear.”
They leave Narron’s shop together. The way Lily’s arm is wrapped around his bicep leaves Silas feeling like the man he used to be before his death. And like before, Narron’s words bounce around in his head.
It’s three days later when a package arrives on their doorstep.
A package wrapped in brown paper with a tag that reads: For my sweet death blossom and her darling cowboy.
“It’s from Narron!” Lily laughs.
“Obviously.”
Lily rips the brown wrapping. “How do you know it’s obvious?”
“Narron is the only one I’ve heard that calls you ‘sweet death blossom,’” Silas says.
She laughs again. “You are correct, my darling cowboy.”
“Shut it,” Silas says, but he can’t keep the smile from his face.
Inside the box are two bottles of wine, a container of chocolate, a bundle of tobacco, and a pipe.
The wine is European. Elven writing on the bottle says its name, the region it was made, the amount of alcohol, and the magic used. Dark and sweet, with a lingering scent of elven magic. The smell makes Silas’ nose twitch. Even Lily shivers at the magic in the bottle.
The chocolates are made by a local goblin candy shop. Sweet and savory, the smell of them makes Silas’ mouth water. Sprinkles on the top of the chocolate glitter in the light.
The tobacco and pipe, though, interest Silas the most.
The tobacco is strong, with a hint of earthy sweetness to it. The smell of it brings a fuzzy memory to his mind.
Silas and a man are sitting together on the edge of a lake. The man is looking at Silas. His voice and face, however, are impossible to recognize. When the man turns away, Silas sees pointed ears with golden cuffs and piercings. The piercings glint in the sunlight.
The memory fades, and Silas is left with a heavy feeling in his chest.
“Silas?” Lily’s voice is soft and worried.
Silas clears his throat. “Yes, darlin?”
“You, ok?”
“Yeah, yeah. Just… just a memory.”
Lily's brows rise. “Was it good or bad?”
“Good, I think. The elf and I were sitting at the edge of a lake smoking.” Silas glances down at the bundle in his hand. “The tobacco smelled like this.”
“Want to go sit down?”
“No, no. I’m good. What else is in there?”
Lily hesitates to answer. “A pipe.”
The pipe is short and old. The faint smell of tobacco clings to the wood. Despite the age, the wood is smooth and has been well taken care of. On the bottom of the pipe is an inscription that reads 1850.
“It’s old,” Silas says.
“Any memories from this?”
The elf comes to his mind again. Him lounging in the shade, a pipe in his mouth, and a book opened on his chest.
Silas shakes his head. “Just that elf again.”
“Did you smoke a pipe?”
“I preferred cigars and cigarettes.” Silas twists the pipe in his hand. “But I will use this pipe.”
Lily’s hand rests on his lower back. “I think Narron will appreciate that.”
“Why did he send these?”
Lily holds up a note. “He wanted to give us a gift to celebrate fixing your legs. He felt bad he didn’t have anything to give us the other day.”
“How nice of him.” Silas grabs the bottle of wine. “Shall we open up the wine, darlin?”
An hour later and the first bottle is almost gone.
The wine is stronger than Silas expected. Regular alcohol does not affect him anymore, but this magic-infused wine has him feeling warm and tingly all over. It’s been decades since he was able to feel close to drunk.
Lily, however, is pushing the drunk line. She alternates between giggling fits and trying to have a serious conversation. She’s rambling on about a principle of magic that Silas is struggling to comprehend.
Laying back on the couch, with Lily pressed against his chest, Silas is far too comfortable. She’s warm, so very warm against his undead skin. Her bare shoulders are so soft.
Their empty glasses are on the floor near the nearly empty wine bottle.
When she stops talking, Silas looks down at her.
Lily’s eyes are heavy. Her lips are stained red. Through her usual sweet smell is the overpowering scent of sugar and magic. The magic in the wine strengthens her own. Magic hums beneath her skin, and every time they touch, shivers run through Silas.
There’s a change in her eyes. That blissful drunken look is swallowed up by lovesickness that Silas recognizes. He freezes.
Her hand reaches up and cups his face. Her fingers tingle with built-up magic. Silas wants to pull away from her hand, but he also wants her to keep touching him. Touch every part of him.

Her brows are furrowed, yet her eyes are glassy. He can see her confusion, embarrassment, and rejection in her aura. The usual black and green swirls are disrupted by lightning strikes of blue and white.
Her mouth opens, attempting to form a coherent apology, but the alcohol and emotions make it difficult.
Silas holds up a hand, and she stops.
“You’re drunk, sweetheart,”
“I’m not,” she slurs.
“Yes, you are. Why else would you kiss me?” Silas laughs. “A lovely lady like you don’t want to be kissing an undead thing like me.”
She looks serious. “But what if I do?”
The intensity in her eyes makes him swallow. He believes her, but he can’t bring himself to let this happen.
“Don’t say that,” he whispers.
She reaches for him. “Silas, I want to ki—"
“You don’t.”
“I do.” She licks her lips. “I want to kiss you. And touch you. And lov—”
“Lily, that is enough.”
Lily jumps. She instinctively pulls away from him; surprise and fear flash through her aura. Silas winces. He didn’t mean for his voice to be so loud. He didn’t mean to scare her.
“Shit, I’m sorry Lily, I didn’t mean to yell.”
She nods, but the hurt and confusion are still there.
“Let’s go to sleep,” he begins in a softer tone. “That wine has addled our brains.”
“Right,” Lily whispers.
Silas helps her up off the couch. She wobbles, but Silas keeps her standing. An arm around her waist, Lily leans heavily against Silas.
She is silent as Silas helps her to bed.
“Goodnight, Lil,” Silas whispers.
“Night.” She rolls away from him.
He ignores the ache in his chest and leaves her room.
The house is quiet as Silas walks back to the living room.
He picks up the empty glasses and wine bottle from the floor. The syrupy sweetness that once sent chills through his body now turns his stomach.
When the glasses are cleaned, chocolates and the wine bottle has been put away, Silas stands alone in the living room. There is no evidence of what happened in the living room. No lingering smell of sugary wine or magic. Even the soured scent of Lily’s embarrassment is gone.
The house is still quiet. From the dark hallway that leads to the bedroom, a dark shape emerges from the darkness. Familiar orange materializes as eyes glint in the darkness.
Todd gives Silas a long look before sitting and meowing.
“I know, I know,” Silas mutters as he slumps onto the couch.
Todd chirps again before approaching Silas. He sits at Silas’ feet, looking up at him. Silas can’t read the look in Todd’s eyes, but Silas knows he isn’t happy.
“I’m such a fool,” Silas whispers.
Todd blinks.
“She was drunk! What was I supposed to do, then? Let her kiss me?”
Todd tilts his head. His face remains unreadable.
“Have you seen me?” Silas scoffs. “She shouldn’t be kissing me. She deserves someone living with a beating heart and life in them. All I have are hazy memories of a past that barely feels like mine. And those memories, Todd, aren’t all good.”
Todd heaves a loud sigh, then jumps onto Silas’ lap.
Silas scratches Todd’s cheek. His purrs fill the room as his eyes shut.
“She deserves someone better than me, big guy.”
Todd’s eyes open then he pulls away from Silas’ hand.
Their eyes lock. Todd’s pupils narrow, then his eyes shimmer. As much as Silas tries, he can’t look away. A warmth washes through his body as something presses into his mind. Then a voice hums through Silas’ mind.
“Shouldn’t she be able to decide who she deserves?”
Silas jumps and tries to pull away, but he can’t. Todd is firmly implanted in Silas’ mind.
“Shit! You can talk?”
“Yes, all familiars talk.” Todd blinks again. “Mostly to our magic users.”
“I’ve never heard you talk!”
“We rarely communicate with others.”
“Why are you talking to me, then?”
“Because it is necessary.” Todd’s tail flicks.
“Necessary?”
“Yes, it is necessary because you are a fool.” Todd sounds annoyed. 
“I know. I shouldn’t have been drinking with Lily.” Silas runs a hand through his hair. “I shouldn’t have been holding her. I was so close to kissing her.”
“That’s not what I’m talking about, you idiot. Lily likes you. And you like her.”
Silas looks away. “I respect her. That’s it.”
“Liar. You might be dead, but I can smell that you like her."
"I don't smell any different."
"And I see how you look at her. She looks at you the same.”
“Todd, she deserves—”
Silas is cut off by Todd digging his nails into his thigh. He winces and fights the urge to push Todd off his lap.
“Lily can decide for herself who she deserves. And she has chosen you. She cares for you. She adores you. I do not understand why you push her away. Why do you deny your feelings? Why are you denying her?”
Silas is quiet.
“Why, Silas?”
“Because… because what can I give her?”
“Why do you think she wants you to give her something? She simply wants you. Do you want her?”

“So, what is the issue? All she wants from you is companionship and a chance for love.”
“Isn’t that what you and Narron are for?”
“To an extent, yes. Our roles in her life are to help and support her down her magic path. But we cannot give her the type of companionship and love she desires.”
“I can be her friend,” Silas scowls, “but I’m undead, Todd. Anything more than that will not work.”
Todd’s head tilts to the left. “Are you certain?”
“Yes. How can she want to kiss me? I’m undead! I don’t even have a dick.”
Todd’s head tilts to the right. “Are you forgetting that Lily is a necromancer? Connections and relationships with the undead and spirits are not new to her.”
“You mean she’s been with other non-living entities?”
“You won’t be the first undead she’s adored and desired." Todd blinks. "But if you want to know more about those past relationships, you will need to ask Lily.”
Silas doesn’t know what to think. This talk hasn’t helped him very much. And talking to Lily about past relations with the undead and spirits is not something he wants to do. It sounds very personal, and the thought of others having connections with Lily makes Silas’ skin prickle. He has no right to be jealous, but he can’t help it. Was he always a jealous man?
“Is she mad at me?”
“No, she can’t be mad at you. But she is confused and hurt.”
“With me?”
“With herself.”
“She shouldn’t be.”
Todd yawns. “She is. You make it obvious how much you care about her. I think you might even love her. But she is doubting herself. She thinks she misread the signs.”
Silas sighs and leans against the back of the couch. He knows he can’t deny these feelings, and pushing Lily away is hurting her. He doesn’t want to hurt her. He adores her. He thinks he might even be in love with her. So, how can he continue hurting the person he loves? He can’t.
“What if… what if my memories come back and she learns I’m a terrible man?”
“You worry about who you were, but that does not matter anymore.”
“Why?”
“Because that man died years ago.” Todd stands and stretches, then jumps off Silas’ lap.
When Todd is at the hallway entrance, Silas says, “Todd, wait.”
Todd looks back. “Yes?”
“I will talk to Lily tomorrow.”
“Good.”
“Hopefully, I can fix this mess.”
“I am confident that you will.”
And with a wave of his tail, Todd vanishes down the dark hallway. Leaving Silas alone in the living room with his thoughts and regrets.

CRUELLA, THE STORY OF A PUPPY SLAUGHTER (Part 2)
Here for part 1:
Part 1 - Summary:
In the previous part we saw how was originally described Cruella de Vil in Dodie Smith's 101 Dalmatians: a rich heiress, bossy, cruel toward animals, obsessed with fancy jewls, luxury and also fur coats. Cruella met Anita at school, they were in friendly terms, even if Anita described Cruella as a menacing student, expelled from school for drinking ink. Dodie Smith wrote that Cruella comes from a troublesome family: her ancestor was a serial killer, with the supernatural ability to summon storms and a tail (reference to Bram Stoker's Dracula and the devil). Cruella has strange eating habits (uses a lot of pepper, the Devil's spice) and is usually cold (as a corpse or a vampire). Cruella was so obsessed with fur to marry a furrier not for love but only for his job. Cruella's husband is weak and she is the dominant element in the couple, she also forced him to take her surname after their marriage.
We saw also the rapresentation of Cruella in 1961 cartoon version of 101 Dalmatians. Cruella is still a old friend of Anita. Her main colors are red (her loudy red car is the fist thing we see of Cruella) — expressing blood, anger, determination and passion — and green (she is always surrounded by nasty green smoke that comes from her cigarette) that rapresents envy, sickness and greed.
Her appearance is very particular, because she looks like a skeleton and her skin is very white - pale, very different from the healthy pink one of the other characters. She looks like a corpse, she looks sick in this 1961 version of 101 Dalmatians.
Her entrance is accompanied by a song, written by Roger, in which he anticipates the evil intention of Cruella and underlight the disturbing connotations of her surname (Count de Ville is one of Dracula's alias; Cruella de Vil is a pun name on “cruel devil”).
3 - Cruella in 1996
The 1996 live action of 101 Dalmatians the entrance of Cruella is anticipated by a sequence in which we heard a news London Zoo discovered the excoriated carcass of its prized 3-year-old female Siberian tiger, then the news reporter says that according to animal protection groups that monitor the international trade that a white Siberian tiger's fur is so rare that the offer of a pelt would surely draw the attention in contraband. And then the journalist ask “Who cold do something so horrible?”
Then enters Cruella. She wears veiled garment complete with Balenciaga-inspired extreme shoulders and floor-length black and white fur cape.

We saw this mysterious woman with veiled face and a long fur coat - we doesn't know she is Cruella yet - , exiting from her black and white 1974 Panther Deville, license plate “De Vil”. This version of the car is more closed to the book's one.
In Dodie Smith's book, Cruella's chauffeur-driven car is black-and-white striped, which Mr. Dearly describes as “a moving zebra crossing”, and Cruella boasts that it has the loudest horn in London, which she insists on sounding for the Dearly couple.
We saw Cruella shaking the ashes of her cigarette on the shiny and impeccable shoes of her vallet Alzonzo, while he tries to not look bothered by this lack of respect, and then we saw Cruella entering in a luxurious place called “House of De Vil”. Her red cigarette holder — switching from the turquoise the 1966 animated version favored — matched with her brilliant red lipstick, makes a great contrast to her black and white attire and also underlight the psychology of color typical of Disney villains: red is associated with malice, evil (hell and the devil), blood, danger, strength, power, determination and passion.
Now we have a sight of this long railway-like white hallway surrounded by exotic fur-clothes. Now we know she is a stylist and that she is maybe the one who cold be interested in the fur of the dead Siberian tiger.
A crowd of terrified / adoring employees hurry to greet the woman: “Good morning, Miss De Vil”.
Finally Cruella enters in her office and takes off her hat with veil, reveling her double-colored hair. She is Cruella De Vil in all her glory.
This sequence recalls openly the Devil Wears Prada.
This version of Cruella played by Glenn Close is much more human that the 1961 version. She is more charismatic too and also more fashionable. Her entrance is not as scary as the 1961 version, but shows her obsession for fur, her violation of the law and abuse on animals (also at those at risk of extinction) and her high level stylist house of fashion.
She isn't Anita's friend anymore, she is Anita's boss.

While walking to her office, Cruella meets Anita, played by Joely Richardson. She spots that Anita is working on a new model (no more white tiger stripes, but dalmatian's spots). Anita's design catches her eyes and interest, as well as Anita's dog, Perdi: they had a strange chat about Perdi's fur. That, knowing already the plot of the movie and the news details Roger and Pongo were hearing in the previous scene, well, this conversation sounds a lot disturbing.
Cruella: “Anita, darling.”
Anita: “Good morning, Cruella.”
Cruella: “What a charming dog.”
Anita: “Thank you.”
Cruella: “Spots?”
Anita: “Yes, she’s dalmatian.”
Cruella: “lnspiration?”
Anita: “Yes.”
Cruella: “Long hair or short?”
Anita: “Short.”
Cruella: “Coarse or fine?”
Anita: “l’m afraid it is a little coarse.”
Cruella: “Pity!”
Anita: “But it was very fine when she was a puppy.”
Cruella: “Redemption! We need to have a little girl talk. Come to my office. Bring the drawing.”

Ok. The next scene contains a very popular quote from this movie.
We are in Cruella's office: she has just invited Anita to talk about her design. Cruella wants a new coat and would love to wear the one that has just see at Anita's desk. Let's remeber she doesn't want to wear Anita's puppies already, for now is just an abstract idea about someone else's puppies, but they are still talking about Dalmatians' spots, compared with leopard ones and Anita seems to be perfectly fine. I don't think she knows already of Cruella's criminal way to obtain fur from animals at risk of extinction that her henchmen steal from Zoos, but Anita works for a woman who loves to wear REAL fur. I just can't imagine Cruella wearing any faux fur coat. This is not a crime, because it's legal wear fur coats made of mink, sable and ermine and such, but I found very weird that Anita is not having any suspect about Cruella's intention, because she is working on a model of striped tiger fur and Cruella lives for fur, worship fur. She just could not accept to wear faux fur.
However, Anita doesn't seem bothered at all by this strange talk about her dog's fur (yes, dog are not coats), but as a woman who works for fashion/fur industry and loves dogs she should know that in some parts of the world it is legal using cat and dogs to make clothes. I simply can't understand why she is not having any reaction at Cruella's strage interest about Perdi's fur.
Cruella and Anita talk about their work and Cruella makes lovely appreciation for Anita's drawings: she says she is talented and she doesn't want to risk to lose her pen.
That's now that Anita says she would not left Cruella's House for another job, she would left only if she decided to be a stay-at-home mother and wife. Well, no, she talks more genericly of "plans" with a hypothetical, for now, husband/boyfriend, and this could means everything, for example moving to another city, the assumption about marriage is an association made by Cruella that told us a lot of things about how producers would she looks, compared with the family-oriented Disney business plan. This is a very relevant issue we was also in her 1961 version: the losing comparison between Anita's family's oriented live choice and Cruella's — who is sigle, rich and indipendent — one. Cruella loves only her fur coats, while Anita have an husband, a simple house and also a lot of dogs. Cruella is alone, evil, ugly, wears a lot of make up, and not happy, while Anita is married, preatty but in a natural way and happy of her simple lifestyle with her husband and their dogs.
Cruella: “Now, darling, tell me more about these spots. l did leopard spots in the ‘80s. Well, dalmatian spots are a little different, aren’t they? Cozy. Classic.”
Anita: “Cuddly. Less trashy.”
Cruella: “Exactly! Do you like spots, Frederick?”
Frederick: “Oh, l don’t believe so, Madame. l thought we liked stripes this year.”
Cruella: “What kind of sycophant are you?”
Frederick: “Um, what kind of sycophant would you like me to be?”
Cruella: “Frederick… l’m beginning to see spots. What would it cost us to start again on next year’s line?”
Frederick: “Millions.”
Cruella: “Can we afford it?”
Frederick: “Well, yes--”
Cruella: “Pay it, darling. Now go away. l have to talk to Anita.”

Cruella: “Sit down, please. How long have you been working for me?”
Anita: “Uh, two years last August.”
Cruella: “And you’ve done wonderful work in that time.”
Anita: “Thank you.”
Cruella: “l don’t see you socially, do l?”
Anita: No.
Cruella: “And you’re not very well-known, despite your obvious talent.”
Anita: “Well, notoriety doesn’t mean very much to me.”
Cruella: “Your work is fresh and clean, unfettered, unpretentious. lt sells. And one of these days… my competitors are going to suss out who you are… and they’re going to try to steal you away.”
Anita: “Oh, no. lf l left, it wouldn’t be for another job.”
Cruella: “Oh, really?bWhat would it be for?”
Anita: “Well, l don’t know. Um, if l met someone, if working here didn’t fit in with our plans.”
Cruella: “Marriage.”
Anita: “Perhaps.”
Cruella: “More good women have been lost to marriage… than to war, famine, disease and disaster. You have talent, darling. Don’t squander it.”
Anita: “Well, l don’t think that it’s something we have to worry about. l don’t have any prospects.”
Cruella: “Thank God.”

Cruella makes a very cynical — but historically appropriate and also very sharable — critic about marriage. She was right, expecially because of what we saw about her 1960s version and how she is rooted in anti-feminism and in an open condamn of women's growing emancipation from the “traditional family role” imposed by media in the 1950s and 1960s, rapresented by 1961's Anita. However, Cruella is a cruel, evil villaness, so what she says to Anita is just a condamn made by Disney on women who choose career over family and love.
But, here, Cruella is not a friend of Anita who gives her a kind and appreciable life advice (if we ignore that Cruella is evil), Cruella is Anita's boss and doesn't want to lose a valuable and talented employee, so from this point of view her statement sounds a lot more controversial: women in the 50s lost their job if they got married, they were fired because most of the time bosses made them sign a contract with a marriage bar that allow employers to withdraw from the contract, so their contract would terminate on marriage, or said in a simple way: employers used to fire the soon-to-be wife, because it was clear for them that a wife should focus more on family and house care than on a career (that's because the soon-to-be wife is going to have an husband, the bread-giver of the family).
Nowdays, it's a bitter different, but women that want to have also a family are discriminated in workplaces: employers ask constantly in job interviews of they plan to have a family, if they have some relationships or if they are single. That's because employers would lose money paying for maternity leaves to their female employees that cannot work for some month. A young woman in fertile age with a stable relationship is a risk for a employer more than a young man in fertile age with a stable relationship. A newly mom is more closed to chose a lesser paid job or a part time one compatible to her family then a newly dad.
And also this quote, remember we are talking about the 90s, gives a clear flashback on women's unstable careers back then, but also puts in highlines some stereotypes about women who menage to balance both work and family: their quility of work is lower than before (this is said by Cruella to the new-mom Anita, we will see it below), they are not productive enough, they makes employers lose money, ecc. Nowadays, unlike in the 90s there is a constant svalutation of women who chose to put family first: they have no free time, they have no a social life (well, some shy single woman like Anita doesn't have a frizzy social life too), some kind of lifes are better than others (luxury and exotics vacation are better than reading books, dancing and going to bars with friends is better than playing sports or painting, ecc.) and if they dare to go out with their friends or take time for themselves and their hobbies, society is still ready to shame them for “not being good mothers”. That's not right: everyone should be able to live their life as they want, to have a frizzy social life or just enjoying a little time for themselves, without receiving criticism of any sort.
In the US the marriage bar, the practice of restricting the employment of married women was never explicitly eliminated by federal laws. Marriage bars were widely relaxed in wartime, during World War I and World War II due to an increase in the demand for labor in the assistance of war efforts (mostly because men were at the front).
Since the 1960s, the practice has widely been regarded as employment inequality and sexual discrimination, and has been either discontinued or outlawed by anti-discrimination laws. For example, in Italy marriage bar is declared illegal with law nr. 7 of 1963, that establishes the prohibition of dismissal of female workers for reasons of marriage (later extended also to male workers), and law nr. 1204 of 1971 prohibited dismissal of the working mother within the first year of the child's age (maternity bar).
The main reason of the bar is that married women were supported by their husbands, therefore they did not need jobs. However, marriage bars provided more opportunity for those whom proponents viewed as "actually" needing employment, such as single women or married men (needed to support the family).
Discrimination against married female teachers in the US was not terminated until 1964 with the passing of the Civil Rights Act.
Marriage bars generally affected educated, middle-class married women, particularly native-born white women. Their occupations were that of teaching and clerical work. Lower class women and women of color who took jobs in manufacturing, waitressing, and domestic servants were often unaffected by marriage bars.
However, some State law provides protection for people discriminated for their marital status. For example, in California, discrimination in employment based on marital status is against the law. Under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), it is illegal for an employer to discriminate based on an applicant’s marital status or perceived marital status.
Under the FEHA, it is an unlawful employment practice for an employer to treat an applicant or employee differently based on the employee’s marital status. This includes: Refusing to hire or employ, Refusing to select a person for a training program, Firing, bearing, or discharging an employee, Discriminating against a person in compensation or in terms, conditions, or privileges of employment.
Marital status could refer to whether an individual is married or not, has been married, or plans to get married. This includes: Currently married, Divorced, Married to a same-sex partner or opposite-sex partner, Engaged to be married, Married but separated, Married but seeking a divorce, Widowed, Annulled marriage, Plans to get married someday, Plans to never get married, Other marital states.
Forty years ago, on October 31, 1978, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) was signed into law to prohibit discrimination in the workplace on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. Since its passage, more women have been able to continue working while pregnant; they have also been able to work further into their pregnancies without being forced to leave their jobs.
Pregnancy discrimination involves treating a woman (an applicant or employee) unfavorably because of pregnancy, childbirth or a medical condition related to pregnancy or childbirth. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) forbids discrimination based on pregnancy when it comes to any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, such as leave and health insurance and any other term or condition of employment. Pregnancy discrimination also includes perceived bias when expectant employees experience subtly hostile behaviors such as social isolation, negative stereotyping and negative or rude interpersonal treatment such as lower performance expectations, transferring the pregnant employee to less-desirable shifts or assignments or inappropriate jokes and intrusive comments.
Claims of pregnancy discrimination filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) increased sharply in the 1990s and 2000s, and pregnancy discrimination remains a widespread problem across all industries and regions of the United States. Yet statistics show that in the last 10 years, more than 50,000 pregnancy discrimination claims were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Fair Employment Practices Agencies in the United States.
So, yes. Disney here touched a lot of points in about two levels:
Family is more important than a career (successful, unmarried stylist Cruella is the evil one) and if you, a working woman, put career over family you are wrong. Nowday, we know that there isn't anything wrong about putting career first, but also we know that there isn't anything wrong also on putting family first or find a balance between the two. The important thing we should remember is that if we have not equality in working places, we should have not real free choices about our dream life;
It's perfectly fine excluding women in stable relationships or women with children from workplaces, because their work would not be at the level of a single woman, that can sacrifice her free time working late (employers exploitation logic deny free time);
Only child-free single women should be allowed to work, but only until they meet a soul mate (reminiscent of the old Disney penchant for old traditional gender roles).
However, returning at the plot, after that Anita reassures Cruella that she has no marriage prospects on the horizon, Cruella asked to Alonzo to bring Anita's drawings to her and the two women start to discuss about Anita's work, because Cruella want to add a long fur stole to Anita's original model: “I look wonderful in spots”, says Cruella,“we could do this in linen. It would be stunning in fur”. Then Anita remarks that would not be appropriate wearing fur in April, so Cruella give her famous lines: “But it’s my only true love, darling. l live for fur. l worship fur. After all, is there a woman in all this wretched world who doesn’t?” and then makes a joke that anticipates what she will plan to Anita's puppies more over in the movie: “lt is rather amusing, isn’t it? (...) If we make this coat... it would be as if l were wearing your dog.”
Then Anita and Perdi meet Roger (Jeff Daniels) and his dog Pongo, they fall in love and get married. Cruella doesn't like this. Obviously. We see a very enraged Cruella, wearing a black cellophane velvet with black and white coque feather trim, screaming against Anita's “betrayal”, when she read Anita and Roger's wedding publication on a newspaper.
Her anger toward Roger for stealing her best employee, maybe envy for Anita's love (well, it’s Disney), are promptly consoled, when her two henchmen bring her a little present from Mr. Skinner (Nomen omen, this surname fits perfectly creepy scared guy that work as furrier): it's the Siberian tiger found dead and excoriated in the London Zoo at the beginning of the movie. It was Cruella that wanted her fur and at the end she obtained it.
This Mr. Skinner (John Shrapnel) is a sadic taxidermist that enjoys killing and skinning animals alive, just like he did to the female white tiger at the London Zoo. He doesn't speak beacause when he was young, a dog attacked him by tearing open his throat and ripping out his vocal cords in the process, leaving him with a bad scar on his neck and is a little based on Mr. de Vil, Cruella's husband in Dodie Smith's book, but with the difference that Mr. Skinner has a more strong and menacing personality, while Mr. de Vil was weak and totally dependent by Cruella's desires.
Near the end of the movie, we will see in a crescendo of more explicit references to animal abuse, this charming version of Cruella de Vill ordering Cruella De Vil to Mr. Skinner to kill the dogs, because she fells that the police's suspicion are mounting against her: “poison them,” says Cruella “drown them, bash them on the head. Got any chloroform? I don't care how you kill the little beasts, just do it, and do it now!”

In second relevant scene, Roger and Anita are out, walking the dogs, when Anita spots Cruella's car. In fact, as happen at the beginning the black and white 1974 Panther Deville is the first element we see in this scene and anticipate the entrance of Cruella. Recognizing the car, Anita runs to home and there she found Cruella. She welcomes in a very lovely way Anita in her own home, but she is very rude with Roger, who tries his best to be polite during the whole scene. Cruella then mocks Roger about his job (he is a videogame designer, a well paid job nowadays, but that in the 90s can just make snobbish people like Cruella turn up their noses, it's not the classical respectable professions “to make money”). Anita and Roger are just returned from their honeymoon and Creulla acts very nicely toward Anita, she says she missed her and their exchange of ideas, but she isn't happy when Roger announce they are going to have a baby, but Cruella remarks that “she has no use for children”, but she is very interested in Pongo and Perdi's puppies.
Unlike her cartoon version Cruella during the movie shows a lot of different, hiconic and fashionable outfits: at her visit at Anita and Roger's house, she wears a zebra coat dress with mink sleeves with matching Russian-inspired hat, red PVC boots that match with gloves in the same color and material (long fake red nails on each finger) and her red cigarette holder. Her dress also features a practical detail: a cigarette case paired with ammo cartridges as if they are military medals. The zebra stripes also give off the impression of bones or a rib cage for that extra goth vibe. Her lips are permanently stained the color of crimson, while her winged eyeliner adds to her high drama aesthetic.
Despite being set in contemporary London, everything about Cruella's closet defies a specific time period. It is as if she stepped in from the '60s of the original story combined with a century's worth of high fashion references. This is very logic: people have a lot of clothes and is natural for a very fashionable stylist to have and wear a lot of haute couture outfits.
Cruella: “And you must be Rufus.”
Roger: “No, it’s-- it’s Roger. And it’s a pleasure, Miss De Vil.”
Cruella: “What’s a pleasure?”
Roger: “Uh, making your acquaintance.”
Cruella: “Such a sweet thought. l wish l could reciprocate. Tell me, darling, you married him for his dog. Oh, darling, l’ve missed you so. l hate that you’ve taken leave.”
Anita: “But l’m still working. Um, you’ve been getting my sketches?”
Cruella: “Well, it’s not the same thing. l miss the interaction-- And what is it that you do… that allows you to support Anita in such… splendor?”
Roger: “l design video games.”
Cruella: “Video games? ls he having me on?”
Anita: “Oh, no, he’s very good at it. Um, and it’s a growing business.”
Cruella: “Those horrible noisy things that children play with on their televisions?Someone designs them? What a senseless thing to do with your life.”
Roger: “Oh, did Anita tell you the news? She’s going to have a baby.”
Cruella: “ls this true?”
Anita: “Yes.”
Cruella: “Oh, you poor thing! l’m so sorry.”
Anita: “We’re very excited about it, Cruella.”
Cruella: “You can’t be serious.”
Roger: “She is!”
Cruella: “Well, what can l say? Accidents will happen.”
Anita: “We’re having puppies, too!”
Cruella: “Puppies! You have been a busy boy. Well, l must say, that’s somewhat better news. l adore puppies! l’ll expect a decline in your work product.”
Anita: “Oh, l shouldn’t think so.”
Cruella: “Be sure to let me know when the blessed event occurs.”
Anita: “Oh, well, it won’t be for another eight months.”
Cruella: “The puppies, darling. l’ve no use for babies.”
Again here we have a remark of how horrible is Cruella as boss (she says to Anita she expect a decline in her work, and this would make her useless and less precious for Cruella's House) and as person: according to Disney people who doesn't like children are horrible and cruel, but there is a double meaning in Cruella's word: “Iʼve no use for babies” could mean both that she is not interested in maternity (that's perfectly legit, not all like children, are comfortable with them or just dream to have children someday) but also that she couldn't find any material use of babies, while for puppies we know she knows well how to use them: as material for a new fur coat.

The next scene is a classical recall to the original Disney cartoon of 1961: it's a stormy night and during the lightning flash for a few frames only, we see Cruella as a complete silhouette while few second after she opens the door and enters in Anita and Roger's house, with a big menacing smile on her face.
Pattern clashing will not only stand, but it is also encouraged, as the tiger cape with a leopard lining reveals. Paired with a leather skirt and tiger bodice featuring claw clasps
Again there is the recurring joke about Cruella misnaming Roger (Rufus, Rupert, Roland), if it's intentional (and this version of Cruella doesn't seem to left anything casual) it's a clear remark about how she dislikes Roger, the guy that stole her best designer, if it's not intentional, shows how Cruella find him irrelevant for her purpose at the point she doesn't even bother to rember his name to flatter him. Cruella is not polite or kind to Roger as she is with Anita. She doesn't need Roger, she need Anita and hates Roger for turning down Anita's value for her interests.
In this scene Cruella uses the same words she uses in the 1961 version (“How marvelous. How marvelous! How perfect... Oh, the devil take it! They’re mongrels! No spots! No spots at all! What horrible little white rats!”), but with something new that shows her uncaring nature (“All right, put them in a bag. l’ll take them with me now.”) and again mocks Roger for his “strange” and not prestigious job, when he firstly deny her offer for the puppies (“Oh? You’ve come into some money, have you? Did you design some silly game… that will drive the delinquent kiddies into frenzies of video delight?”).
However, compared to her 1961 alter ego, this Anita is more assertive and talks for herself, saying a determinated “no” to Cruella. Anita also starts to be a bit suspicious about Cruella's intentions (“But, Cruella, what would you do with 15 puppies?”). Roger and Anita this time seems to be equally determinated to refuse Cruella's business proposals.
Cruella crescent rage is underlight by the sounds effects of thunderclaps and it is Anita who says the final “no”.
“All right, keep the little beasts. Do what you like with them. Drown them, for all l care! You’re a fool, Anita! l’ve no use for fools. You’re fired! You’re finished! You’ll never work in fashion again! l’m through with all of you! l’ll get even! Just wait! You’ll be sorry, you fools! You idiots!”
When Roger and Anita refused to sell the puppies, Cruella's rage exploded as happened in the cartoon version (she screams and insults Roger and Anita, she tears the check into a thousand pieces and throws them in Roger's face), but let's remeber she is Anita's boss now: she uses her power and fired Anita's too, now that Anita and Roger refused to Cruella what she want, Anita become immediately useless. In fact Cruella has yet the design for her new outfit, from Anita needed only the puppies and if she cannot obtain them with good manner, well, as happened in the cartoon version, she will steal them.

In the previous part we saw how in the 101 Dalmatians of 1961, the car was the alter ego of Cruella, well, in this 1996 live action, her personality and her obsession is channeled into her outfits. Before it all goes to hell for the fashion maven, her rotation of zebra, leopard, and tiger print reveal she wasn't bluffing when she exclaimed of her fur obsession.
The costumes as designed by three-time Oscar winner Anthony Powell (co-designed with Rosemary Burrows) take Cruella's love of all things animal print to the extreme, delivering jaw-dropping results.
Cruella's entire life is a performance supported by her wardrobe, makeup, and hair. Cruella increases the level of red (it's the outburst of her bloody determination to obtain what se want, it's her mad passion for furs that determinated her end) during the climax with her fur coat of choice, which will soon be ruined by some farm animals. That smell is going to be hard to get rid of, and there aren’t any dry cleaners in prison.
As we saw in the previous part, Cruella's change of luck is well rapresented by her ruined clothes: she is going to jail, her life and career are over, her clothes aren't perfect and fancy anymore.
This happens also in the 102 Dalmatians live action of 2000: red clothing anticipates Cruella's criminal climax, while her ruined clothes are the sign of her defeat.

Nearly at the end of the movie, when her plans are finally reveled, Cruella wears a very unique red “flames” dress: the bodice is organza and silk satin beaded, sequined with a beaded net collar. The skirt is silk satin and nylon net beaded and sequined, lines in ostrich feathers. The headdress is tiered flames made of mirror, metal and painted glass. While her attire during her final metch with the Dalmatian is a black dress with large shoulders that recall Balenciaga, a black lather waist belt and a Gothic necklace with rubies, pearls and diamonds. The fur coat is floor-length black and red, while her headdress is a little hat with black and red feathers.

4 - Cruella in Once Upon A Time

More recent version of Cruella can be founded in the ABC TV show Once Upon A Time. I will not make a summary of the themes of the TV because it has a very complex plot and that is not relevant for our comparison. So, let's say only that is a show who feature the adventure of Emma Swan, Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas)'s daughter, and her biological son Henry (who was adopted by Regina Mills, the Evil Queen, now mayor of Story Brook) to break the magic curse that turned Enchanted Forest to a modern day Maine town called Storybrook, in which live all the characters from the popular fairy tales we know from Disney adaptations, unaware of their true identities.
Cruella is introduced in Season 4. The evil Rumpelstinskin (Robert Carlyle) recruited her and some other evil lady to regain his Dark Lord magic powers and take his revenge on the people of Storybrook as well as his happy ending.
The first we saw Cruella is at her ungodly hour: she is divorcing from a guy called Mr. Feinberg, strongly in debt and FBI is repossessing her husband's belongings, including her fancy fur coats, her big mansion in Long Island, New York, and her other goods. (See here for references: X)
Cruella plays little importance in the plot, until the Author is released from the book; unable to kill him herself, she pretends to threaten Henry Mills's (Jared S. Gilmore) life to force Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Regina/Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) to do so. However, Emma confronts her, not knowing the restriction the Author placed on Cruella, and magically blasts her off a cliff to her death.
The actress chosed to play Cruella de Vil is Victoria Smurfit and her appearance recalls more the 1961 version than Glenn Close. She wears a black night gown with paillettes or little pearls, long red PVC gloves and a white fur coat, but drives her black and white 1974 Panther Deville. However, during the show she is seen also wearing leather black pants, red boots matching with her gloves and several different types of fur coats. Cruella's phone case has dalmatian spot patterns.
Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold snarkily remarks that he recognized Cruella's scent as “desperation and gin”, somewhat suggesting or implying that Cruella is an alcoholic of sorts. Cruella later confirms this, having blamed her misfortunes on “bad judgment and gin”.
Unlike her other version, this Cruella has some a very limited magic powers, and has only been known to accomplish a few specific spells. Her most remarkable power is the ability to control any animal, whether it be a Dalmatian or a Dragon. The green smoke that comes out of Cruella's mouth when she uses persuasion magic on animals is designed to reflect Cruella's green and yellow cigarette smoke in Disney's 101 Dalmatians.
Her other main power is a very limited telekinesis: Cruella is able to enchant her car to drive itself around.
In the 5 Season, after her death, Cruella ends up in the Underworld, a purgatory run by the deity Hades (Gregory Germann). She makes a deal with Hades, who offer her to rule Underworld in his absence and help trap the heroes there. Delighted with the idea of getting to torment souls for eternity, Cruella agrees to the deal. This makes even more evident the similarities with the goddess Hela from Norse Mythology, as both ruled the underworld and have half-black half-white hair.
However, the most important episode about Cruella is “Sympathy for the Devil”, in which we learn about her true story.
"Sympathy for the De Vil" Season 04, Episode 18
In 1920s England, a young and blonde Cruella De Vil (played by Milli Wilkinson as child and Victoria Smurfit as adult) is being mistreated by her mother Madeline (Anna Galvin) as she instructs her Dalmatians to chase her daughter, and is locked in the attic in the same setting that resembles the 1979 Gothic novel Flowers in the Attic by V. C. Andrews. The room where Cruella is locked up is filled with her mother's dog statuettes and dog show trophies. Fast forward to several years later, and that a reporter, who is revealed to be the Author (Patrick Fischler) but is using an alias by the name of Isaac Heller, is paying a visit to the home pretending to seek out a story after having seen Cruella from the attic, only to have Madeline warning him to stay away. Isaac returns and helps Cruella escape from the attic. He then takes Cruella out for a date that includes dinner and dancing. Cruella reveals to Isaac that the reason she was kept in the attic was that she witnessed her mother kill her father and her succeeding husbands; Isaac then reveals to Cruella that he was more than just a reporter and has the ability to use his pen and ink to create magical stories. Isaac proposes that they run away together, and uses his quill and ink to give Cruella her persuasion powers to control animals.

However, for Isaac, his future with Cruella would later take a unique twist that will put his future in danger. When Madeline pays a visit to see him, she tells him that Cruella had lied to him about what actually happened to her husbands: as child Cruella killed her own father, Madeline's first husband, by putting a poisonous flower in his tea. Cruella was a troubled child and her parents had hoped she would grow out of her disturbing behavior. But after Cruella murders her father, her mother fears that Cruella's murderous tendencies will get worse and will become a full fledged serial killer. Not wanting anyone else to get hurt or killed by Cruella and not wanting her daughter to go to prison, Madeline had no choice but to lock her Cruella away from the outside world and keep her close to try to snap Cruella out of her disturbed mind. However Madeline's intentions were in vain as Cruella ended up poisoning her next two husbands. Terrified that Isaac will set her daughter free and start killing more people, Madeline warns Issac to stay away from her, because she is dangerous and can not be saved, while Isaac doesn't believe her, Madeline tells Isaac that Cruella takes everything someone loves and destroys it and tells him to stay away from her or he will suffer the same fate as her two husbands and lose all he holds dear.

When Madeline returns home, Cruella was ready for her, and eventually kills her mother by controlling her Dalmatians and commanding them to attack her.

Afterwards, Isaac discovers that Cruella has stolen his pen, and goes back to her house to find out that Cruella used her ability to control animals to make her mother's pet Dalmatians turn against her and rip her to shreds, before Cruella herself slaughtered the Dalmatians and made a fur coat out of them.

Horrified, Isaac makes a dash for the pen to stop her, but during a struggle the magic ink is spilled onto Cruella. She accidentally ingests some and the ink shows her true colors. As Cruella is about to kill him, Issac uses his powers as the Author to make it so that Cruella can never kill anyone ever again by writing it down on a piece of paper "Cruella De Vil can no longer take away the life of another." As he leaves, Cruella tells him she's not done.
Cruella kept this secret, as intimidation would still work for her needs.
This episode have a lot of Disney reference to the old 1961 version of 101 Dalmatians:
Madeline's car is similar in design and color to Cruella's car from One Hundred and One Dalmatians.
The song that Cruella hears on the radio is a jazz instrumental version of the song "Cruella De Vil", from One Hundred and One Dalmatians.
Ink spills on Cruella, just like Cruella spilled ink on Roger Radcliffe and Pongo in the movie. (One Hundred and One Dalmatians, 1961)
When Cruella uses persuasion magic, the magic comes out of her mouth in the form of green smoke, which is designed to reflect the green and yellow cigarette smoke that Cruella puffs in the movie. (One Hundred and One Dalmatians, 1961)

This 1920s version of Cruella de Vil we see in Once Upon a Time is inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. Interestingly, in "Sympathy for the De Vil", Isaac can be seen reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. While he is captive in Mr. Gold's cabin, Isaac reads F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. And largely recall what we already saw of Cruella's original version in the book by Dodie Smith: Cruella is a cruel serial killer. She is smart and manipulative, shows no empathy and emotions and uses people for her own needs. She uses Dalmatians as her own weapons to take her revenge on her mother: she turned her own dogs against her and finally removes the last obstacle to her own freedom. Is important to notice that Cruella slaughters and skins the Dalmatians to create a new dalmatian fur coat for her own, that wears victoriously under Isaac horrified eyes. The Dalmatian fur coat is her trophy. Killers like to take trophies and souvenirs from their victims. Keeping some memento — a lock of hair, jewelry, piece of clothing, newspaper clips of the crime — helps prolong, even nourish, their fantasy of the crime or to relive the crime over and over in their minds. Cruella at the end fully reveals herself as the serial killer she is.
When Cruella drinks accidentally Author's ink that transforms her hair black and white, is another reference to the novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith, in which is said that Cruella used to drink ink as a child. The dress Cruella is wearing at the jazz club is the dress Bérénice Bajo wears in the the famous 2011 comedy-drama film The Artist. Also the dancing scene between Cruella and Isaac recalls the one between Bérénice Bajo and Jean Dujardin, when play the role of actors Peppy Miller and George Valentin filming a ball scene for a mute movie.

Conclusion
As we saw, all the version of Cruella that were developed time by time, still share the characteristics of a sadic, cruel villaness.
Glenn Close version of Cruella doesn't care about animals' lifes, doesn't care about workers rights or other person's life projects. She uses creepy hanchmen to obtain what she wants, she steals and plot the death of even rare animals for their fur. She uses and manipulates people.
Victoria Smurfit's Cruella is a real serial killer. She is selfish, cunning, manipulative and the violence against animals is just a moment on her murderous revenge on her mother: she used Madeline's pretious dogs to kill her and then kept their skins as souvenir, as serial killers do.
There's no doubt that all those versions of Cruella are evil and Disney simply can not create any positive emotional connection with a woman who murders dogs. It's simply impossible to explain why Cruella hates dog in a way that can justify abuse toward animals. That is why this Cruella movie with Emma Stone is a huge mistake.
As conclusion, I will borrow again the words of composer Bill Lee from the 60s animated version of 101 Dalmatians to say what I think of trailer with Emma Stone as Cruella:
This vampire bat, this inhuman beast
The world was such a wholesome place until

Impossible LotR Quiz Answer sheet with explanations!
As an addendum, since people have been doing the quiz I’ve seen a few mistypes and awkwardnesses that are my own fault so I’ve corrected them. This means some people got a higher score than was shown, know that when I looked over your answers I saw your actually right answers and fully appreciated them! It’s good to not that the ‘fill in the blanks’ questions will not take two words in one space, so I’ve had to get creative with how I apply two named folk like Mardil Voronwe, or people who have numbers like Hurin I.
I would also like to say, to everyone talking about how they’ve never read the Silmarillion, this quiz is very purposefully almost entirely based outside of the Silmarillion. This is Appendices stuff! Indeed there is only 1 question even tangentally related to elves in here, this is by design.

(the answer to this was originally Brego because of a foolish typo from me, many apologies!)

Farmer Maggot's particular friend was Tom Bombadil  It is stated that Farmer Maggot sometimes peacefully passes through the Old Forest to go and meet Tom Bombadil, who very much enjoys his company. However! Those who answered Merry or Pippin still deserve excellent recognition, Farmer Maggot was indeed fond of Pippin and respected Merry greatly.

What was the office of the Steward originally created to do? - Keep the Tradition of Isildur When Romendacil I went to war in the east, he realised that if he died then the secret of the Tradition of Isildur would die with him. Hence he wrote it down in a sealed scoll and gave it to a trusted confidante, to be given to his heir if he should perish. This tradition was maintained by further kings and those trusted confidantes became the Stewards of Gondor. This, admittedly, is a more suggested progression than explicit, but it’s a Impossible evil quiz so :) Q8. What was the 'Tradition of Isildur'? - Remember where Elendil was buried. Elendil had been secretly entombed in Calenardhon, supposedly the midpoint between Gondor and Arnor. This was a hallowed space for only Kings at first, but in later years when the Stewards came to rule Gondor they also were permitted the secret. Cirion had the remains moved when Calenardhon was gifted to the Eotheod to eventually become a part of the Kingdom of Rohan. 
Q9. At the time of Pelargir's founding, is the world flat or round? - Flat. Pelargir was founded as a ‘Faithful Numenorean’ haven on the river Anduin. Therefore it was built before Numenor’s destruction in the Akallabeth, the reason for which being that Eru turned the world from flat to round. 
Q10. Which of these monarchs were indolent and had no interest in ruling? - King Atanatar I - King Narmacil I - Tar-Vanimelde King Atanatar I ruled during Gondor’s richest generation and seemed to believe that meant he didn’t need to put any work in. Narmacil I, his son, didn’t want to put any work in, but he at least assigned his nephew, Minalcar, as ‘Karma-Kundo’ or regent during his reign. So he at least did something to keep the country going. Tar-Vanimelde had no interest in ruling and allowed her husband to do most of the governence. This backfired when she died and he organised a coup against his son to hold power.

When looking back on the Ship-Kings of Gondor, King Tarannon Falastur began the invasion of Harad and expanded Gondor's borders, King Earnil-I finally took Umbar but died at sea shortly afterwards, King Ciryandil spent most of his reign trying to defend Umbar and died in it's seige and King Hyarmendacil defended Umbar against seiges for 35 years before making war upon all Harad and claiming Harondor as a province of Gondor, ending the line of the Ship Kings.
Q12. What happened during the reign of King Romendacil II? - I don't know! Nothing? Yes I know this is particularly evil of me but Romendacil II was originally called Minalcar, yes the same Minalcar who became REGENT of Gondor due to Narmacil’s indolent nature. Minalcar indeed did everything else listed as answers to this question, but none of them happened during his reign as king. Indeed, his reign was said to be peaceful and we have no real information on it, so technically saying we don’t know, and suggesting nothing happened, is actually the most correct answer :)
Q13. Who succeeded Tar-Telperien of Numenor? - Her nephew, Minastir Tar-Telperien was a lesbian Queen of Numenor who never married and never wanted too and did an excellent job and I love her. Her nephew built a tower to mope in about how much he wanted to be an elf. They are not the same. Absolutely terrified about what Amazon could do to her. 
Q14. Whilst his brethren, the nazgul, were attacking the Prancing Pony, The Witch-King was waiting in the Barrow Downs and probably had a really nice time. Not much to this! Witch King was chilling with the Barrow Wights.

In case you’re wondering, yes, I love both Boromirs. But this question is a fun highlight of how many similarities Boromir II has with his namesake. These are the only things they didn’t both do. Although! Boromir I’s son was Cirion who allied with the Eotheod and created Rohan in the first place, the Uruk-Hai destroyed the Bridge of Osgiliath in Boromir I’s lifetime, Boromir II was PROBABLY feared by the witch-king we just don’t know, Boromir II held Ithilien and Boromir I had two elder sisters like Denethor II did.
Q17. Hey, did you know that, from Boromir I's war with the Uruk-Hai of the Morgul Vale, Gondor didn't know peace until Sauron's death on the 25th of March, 3019? Hah hah! How gut wrenching is that? About how long do you think it has been since Gondor knew peace then? Hey wait does that mean Boromir I's valiant victory that came at a personal sacrifice was the beginning of Gondor's wars and then Boromir II's valiant sacrifice was the end- oh god... oh fuck - 550 years To everyone who answered the crossed out answer,,, you’re correct in my heart. You get bonus points. Also hey! What the fuck :) 
Q18. Who was Borondir? - The rider sent to find Eorl who made it to him after starving himself for two days but who then rode to the Celebrant with Eorl anyway and died in that battle. Literally couldn’t love this fellow more. Big Hirgon energy. A hero of Gondor for time immemorial.

Ruling Stewards being Stewards that ruled a Kingless Gondor. But! With Aragorn RIGHT THERE is just seemed very redundant. Still! I’ll allow the pedant to win out, ten minutes is still a Ruling Steward. ALSO! I decided that having an extra box for the ‘voronwe’ part of mardil voronwe was just mean as it set everyone’s answers off kilter, so I removed that. ALSO for all of those calling me a bastard for adding this question, @illegalstargender was the one who requested it! I wasn’t going too! 
Q20. The Stewards, despite ruling through very tumultuous and violent periods, were often known for boring things (because they simply ruled better than the Kings did, I said what I said) But what boring thing was Steward Turin I remembered for? - Being the only monarch of Gondor that married twice This skeezy bastard really did marry a second time during his OLD age just to father a son. I can only imagine what a dreadful cultural and social effect this had on this prude country. It’s so unnecessary! He had daughters, many of them! One of them certainly had a son before he did. He was just being a controlling arse, down with Turin I!!!!

Personal Dark Souls rankings
World Building:
DS1 > DS2 > DS3
Let’s start with an quite obvious one. I agree with many fans that DS3 is more linear, while the other two games allow more exploration. 
What gives DS2 the lower place is the fact that sometimes hidden paths are SO WELL hidden that I actually lost orientation at some point. I couldn’t find the next location or simply couldn’t recognize if a place actually was a dead end or not. That way I really was unsure whether I was making any progression in the game or not. 
DS1 linked the levels perfectly. At the beginning, I immediately tried out all paths from Firelink Shrine. And I had no problems memorizing the several locked / accessible entrances and where they (might) lead.
Soundtracks: 
DS3 > DS1 > DS2
You mainly hear Music played either when you’re in a Boss Battle or at Firelink Shrine / Majula. And while I consider Majula’s Soundtrack better than the Shrines, I can’t say the same about the rest in its game. 
Generally you’re too busy focusing on the boss to pay much attention to the Soundtrack. But in DS3 it happened often enough that I still noticed some bosses’ melodies. First it was at the Cryszal Sage battle, where I thought: Man this music is creepy and intense! Then in the Abyss Watchers battle I thought: Holy sh*t the bell and the violins and the voice! Absolutely badass! These are only a few examples of many times I caught myself focusing more on the soundtrack than the Boss. Yes, it cost me many lives, but it’s worth it! 
DS1 didn’t have many soundtracks I really noticed. But still, after some boss battles I had an earworm. Right while I’m typing this, I have the Gaping Dragon’s soundtrack in my head. 
And DS2... In short: There isn’t a single soundtrack I had really memorized. Majula is the only great exeption. 
Level Design:
DS2 > DS1 > DS3
When I think of it, DS2 generally has he biggest world. And due to this size, so many different locations could fit into the game. We have a great underground “labyrinth”, stormy mountains with Dragons flying around, sand pits, giant castles built at the edge of the ocean, simple forests and don’t get me started on Drangelic Castle. I think from all levels in EVERY Dark Souls game, Drangelic castle has to be my favourite... Okay, next to Anor Londo. 
All places in DS2 are noticeable and memorable in their very own way and I love that! I could never look my fill when I traveled from one location to the other. Even the Gutter has its own uniqueness. I still hate it. 
Now to DS1. It’s lower placed because in my opinion the levels are too bound to the Dark Medieval Fantasy theme. The game mainly consists of Castles, Dungeons, Catacombs, ruins of Castles, evil lairs filled with fire, abandoned Cities, maybe a forest. The only exceptions I can think of right now, are the Crystal Cave and Blighttown. But I think that’s it. 
Now to DS3. I don’t dislike the levels at all. I just think they’re... not quite diverse. Just like DS1, we have our ruins, catacombs, castles, forests, etc. But plus to this, another detail makes almost every location similar to each other: Everything is in ruins. Destroyed. Far past its glory. Abandoned. And full of freaking candles. Again, not that I dislike it. But I feel like so many levels follow the same style. Of course there are some exceptions here and there. Sure, it might have something to do with the lore in DS3. But it is as it is.
Bosses:
DS3 > DS1 > DS2
As I mentioned before, what makes bossfights far more enjoyable for me than in the other games, is the soundtrack. That already is a big plus point for DS3. Apart from that I appreciate the variety of the bosses. With that I don’t only mean the species, but also the sizes. From a group of old men up to one gigantic skeleton. 
Also I think DS3 has the most cutscenes for its bosses. Altogether I feel like most efforts were put into DS3 bosses than in the other games. And the fights themselves are often enjoyable. I can’t think of much that really frustrated me in the game, except the Curse Rotten Greatwood. But again, there I like that you have a different fight mechanic, where you have to hit specific spots to deal damage. Heck, I even like the fight against the Ancient Wyvern, just because the mechanics are different. 
The fights against DS1 bosses was also often fun. Except Bed of Chaos. But here you mainly just have the “beat it until it stops moving” fight. Pretty simple. Not that I complain though, it doesn’t make the fights less enjoyable. 
What I like the most about DS1 bosses, are the bosses themselves. With that I mean their character, their design, and most importantly: Their lore. I already knew Sif’s story before I started to play any Dark Souls just because he got so famous. I like how we have our four main bosses introduced in the beginning cutscene. With Gwyndolin you have the chance to freaking challenge a god. In the DLC you get into the role of the fairytales’ noble knight, who saves the land from evil forces, and who slays the big monster to rescue the pretty princess. Also the fight against Artorias is one of the best fights in the entire series. 
DS2 also has bosses which I like, simply because of their lore. Especially King Vendrick and the Ivory King. But what gives DS2 the last place, is the lacking diversity in the bosses. Many of them are... well... Dudes in Armors. Of course I think of the exceptions, too. And the fact that DS2 has so many bosses. But to put it simple: The number of good and enjoyable bosses is heavenly balanced with the number of frustrating / less memorable ones.
DLCs
DS2 > DS3 > DS1
As I said before: DS2 has a great level design. And the same goes to its DLCs. 
Frozen Eleum Loyce with its clear blue sky and buildings covered in snow is one of the prettiest areas in the series. And I love the idea, where you have the option to search for trapped Knights which will then help you to fight against the final boss. And the bossfight itself is also one of he best in the series. Mainly because of the boss stage itself and the Burnt Ivory King’s epic entrance. 
Heck, I even loved the Frigid Outskirts. I can see what it’s so hated by many fans, but I enjoyed the concept of this great field of snow, where you have to navigate trough the storms and defend yourself against demonic thunder horses. The grim Atmosphere is intense. Okay, I didn’t like the bossfight, but that’s actually the only negative point I have. 
While the other two DLCs weren’t that much fun and eye-candy, I still couldn’t stop exploring every corner of the maps. Especially the Sunken King DLC. Also the bosses were great, too. Even if I got really frustrated at the fight against Elana, I still liked her character design. 
So, in short: The flaws in DS2′s DLCs could be easily overshadowed by all the good aspects.
I actually had to think whether I should put DS3 above DS1 or otherwise. But I decided to rank DS3 higher because of the level design. To be honest, it wasn’t really that much fun to navigate through any DLC maps. The Ringes City looks beautiful though. And I liked that the lore about Gwyn was picked up again. The characters all were great and the fight against Ariandel and Friede was epic in every aspect. 
But from all levels in the series, I felt like the DLCs in DS3 are the least obliging. Yes, Dark Souls is known to be hard, I know that. But here it was just frustrating and disheartening. Usually when I die in Dark Souls, I’m thinking: Okay, next time I got this. I need to pay attention to X so I won’t get killed again. I can make it. Challenge accepted. But here I just was glad when I could bring places behind me. I didn’t feel that much of a sense of accomplishment while I fought my way through. It’s definetely the Lore that carried DS3′s DLC to the second place. Also Lorian was mentioned and had a role. Yes, that is important.
The main reason I placed DS1′s DLC last is the location’s design. Mainly it’s just a brighter, dryer version of Darkroot Garden. On the other hand I liked Oolacile and The Abyss. But especially in Oolacile I didn’t have that much fun either. Mainly because of the enemy type you encountered there. What I really liked though, were the bossfights. Okay, the Sanctuary Guardian and Kalameet were very similar to Monster Hunter battles for me. Manus was fun to fight because dodging his attacks felt really rewarding. Plus you had Sif by your side. But Artorias. Dang, he was hard. And Challenging. I died at least 20 times against him. But i didn’t care, just because the fight against him was so fantastic!
As I said, DS3 and DS1 are very close to each other and DS1 could have easily landed on second place, just because of Artorias. You could actually just consider both of them as second.

So, for now this will be it. I have no idea if anyone will ever read this list, or even care about my opinion. But I just felt like talking about anything Dark Souls related. Noone in my real life is interested in Dark Souls at all, so I decided to share my thoughts here.

this is gonna be very messy cause i WILL be jumping back and forth as things come back to mind so uhh pls enjoy this absolute ramble <3
anyway. i continued playing omori and boy do i have some Thoughts
so first session; i went through the pyre(something i forgot the full name sob) forest/sprout mole village/sweetheart’s castle in one go and let me TELL YOU. DOING THAT WAS FUCKING INSANE I WENT NUTS holy shit.
so anyway.
pyre forest!!!! the lil race against the big spider coming after u for disturbing the smaller spiders mechanic was very fun i had a lot of fun figuring out the best routes to take. i know normally mechanics like that lead to ppl getting frustrated cause u have to keep retrying but i had a lot of fun!!!! sum annoyance but good natured type, th kind that just makes u try harder u know? i just enjoyed it JKFN;FN; candles in the foggy forest....now That is an aesthetic
the rare bear scared the fuckin shit out of me i remember it didn’t attack me straight away so i was like “aw (:” but then when i press x on him it takes me to a BATTLE SCREEN AND SUDDEN THAT MF IS TERRIFYING I WAS LIKE WHWHWHWHWKJDNJ. very funny i honestly wished i recorded my reaction
also omori is afraid of drowning...................................i am breathing heavily. i think whatever happened to mari is related to at least one of the things omori is scared of. so either heights, spiders, or drowning it seems. spiders doesnt seem super likely as a contributor to her death, and while falling from a height is more realistic, such a senseless way of dying doesnt seem to rlly fit ? with the vibe i get from the kiddos in the real world. which makes me think maybe drowning/otherwise suffocating is how she died...but we’ll see. also due to the forgotten library part, we know omori explicitly feared spiders/drowning before mari died so it’s also probable im jus talking out my ass here but still,,,,thoughts

also i felt SO BAD for cutting down that one sprout mole’s chistmas tree he was just trying to celebrate but i wanted to see that present and coincidentally becoming a christmas ruiner was an achievement so all’s fair in love and war i suppose
ALSO. th fuckin plant monster thing under the scientist sprout mole’s room. major little shop of horror vibes from the design, absolutely adored it!!!!! originally i did  just cut the wire holding the piano over it, ending it in one go, but i was very curious abt it so i reloaded a save file to actually fight it and
i know it only spread that gas to make the kiddos happy cause being happy reduces attack i think ? it decreases attack/defense but seeing the kiddos smile so much was nice (:

Summary: The South Pole Station is equipped for research and Edge has always made sure things run smoothly for the inhabitants. His charges are meant to follow his rules and regulations, and in turn, he makes sure they survive in the arctic temperatures. As Edge was walking towards the vehicle shed, he caught an acrid hint of cigarette smoke in the air. He followed it, not inside but around the back and sitting in the shadows of the halogen lights was Rus.
Edge could hardly disguise his approach, the crunch of his boots in the hard-packed snow would have carried in the still icy air long before he came around the corner. But Rus made no attempt to hide. He stayed where he was, a burning cigarette dangling from his gloved fingers as he gazed up at the aurora-filled sky.
He’d already been out here for some time while Edge and the others spoke with Toriel and Gaster. The cold would soon be seeping through his outdoor gear no matter how good it was, sinking its chill into Rus’s bones. Monsters felt the cold less than Humans did but they were by no means immune to it. They could be sickened, frostbitten, and some, like Alphys, tolerated it even less than Humans. As a skeleton, Rus’s endurance should match Edge and Red’s.
Then again, who knew the boundaries of a skeleton from an entirely other universe.
Edge sat down next to Rus, drawing up his knees to rest his arms on them. He looked up at the swirling aurora overhead, the blur of colors rippling together in tangled waves, a sky ocean born of solar particles colliding with the atmosphere.
“it’s so beautiful here.” Rus’s voice was almost too loud in the hush.
“Yes,” Edge agreed in a voice to match.
It was. His intention when they’d first arrived here was only to find a safe place for those in his care, Alphys and Undyne and his still-wounded brother, and later, for Bonnie. Somewhere they could be certain of their meals and shelter. Nothing more than a job to replace the one he lost with the guard and a feeble attempt at that.
He hadn’t expected to find beauty in the glacial whiteness, nor in the endless night sky. He never anticipated the satisfaction that came with seeing another group off, knowing he’d protected them and guided them through this dangerous beauty. He couldn’t have known how Undyne and Alphys would blossom here, both their love for each other and their lives, settling into their place. Or that Red would slowly find his own footing and perhaps he’d never adore the Humans that came here, but he had his own pride in his work, kept all the equipment in top form and helped Alphys in her designs for new additions for the station. And Bonnie, who’d come to them later and never discussed her own inner wounds, yet still seemed to be healing from them. Together they’d created a place of safety for them, a home.
Even after all that, he never could have braced himself for Rus. Who’d settle into their home like he belonged here, their missing puzzle piece. Only it seemed as if he’d come not from their picture, but an entirely different box.
“he told you, didn’t he.” It was impossible to tell if the fog of Rus’s breath was from the cold or the cigarette.
Edge said nothing. His promise to Toriel specified he couldn’t reveal what they’d spoken about. It did not preclude discussing it at all and he only waited as Rus chuckled bitterly, filling in the silence on his own.
“it’s funny,” Rus drawled, flicking ash into the snow, “i came all the way to the end of the world to escape my past and it still came after me.”
Edge thought of Toriel, currently cramped into one of the spare rooms and probably trying not to scrape her horns against the ceiling. “I know the feeling.”
“yeah, i know,” Rus said, grimacing, “i’m sorry. part of the deal of tori sponsoring me was i’d keep mum about back home. i promised.”
“I understand.”
“yeah, well, if i’d known they were gonna pop in unexpectedly, i would’ve warned you about that much, anyway.” Rus’s expression crumpled slightly, going brittle around the edges. “look, i love tori, she’s been nothing but good to me. moms her way into everything. but you guys got your reasons to not want her around, i get that.”
“Rus,” the cloud of his own breath briefly obscured his vision as Edge sighed, “even if they are here because of you, that doesn’t make it your fault.”
“doesn’t it? think what pissed me off most is i know dings is right,” Rus murmured. “he’s can be a little rough saying it, but he means well.”
The resignation in Rus’s voice made Edge bristle, “He accused you of being nothing more than a key made for a particular lock.”
“truth hurts.” It was startling to realize how he’d categorized Rus’s smiles in his own head, the bright, fake one and the softer, shyer truthful one that came with a measure of trust. This one was entirely new, tainted with deep bitterness, “bet big brother didn’t fill in the details, so let me give you the highlights of our family tree.”
“see, our pop was the royal scientist in our world, the real deal. i call him pop, but that’s mostly because it annoyed him. he wasn’t really our father, he was a dna donor. he didn’t even name us, we named ourselves.” Rus was sitting right next to Edge here in the deep cold and still seemed miles away, no, not miles, he was in another world entirely. “dings took his name. not like he really knew there were many options past that or just getting called number one. just as well, i guess, looks more like him than me or blue. dings named blue and they both named me.”
He slanted a glance at Edge, his bright eye lights dimmed behind his goggles. “dings was still really young when blue popped out, what did he know about names? baby bro’s magic was blue, so that’s what he went with. i came a few more years down the line and by then, they’d raided the librarby and found out that papyrus is a traditional skeleton monster name.” He chuckled then, some of the bitterness of his smile invading the sound. “like anything about us was traditional.”
“we were his own personal test tube babies, homegrown like fucking cabbages, and gaster made us to fulfill a specific role. see, the core was important work, sure, but what he was really trying to do was make a machine that could get us past the shield. turns out, third time is the charm for our old man. he made dings and blue first but neither of them could use void magic. i was his hail mary, his last shot, and whaddaya know, it worked.” Rus scowled, tamped out his burning butt into the snow. He dropped it into his little tin and lit another, inhaling deeply and breathing out a cloud of smoke. “he never let me forget what i was for, but dings and blue always tried to be the best brothers they could. after pops kacked, it wasn’t until dings got that machine working that it even came up again.” He shrugged, barely visible through the layers of his heavy coat. “i got to forget for a while, at least.”
Edge said nothing, what could he say? His childhood was hardly one ease and joy; it more resembled the fairy tales that Red sometimes read to him when he still the shorter of the two, listening with wide sockets to gruesome tales that seemed all too possible. It seemed Rus had his own experiences with a sort of wicked stepfather and it was every bit as terrible as those stories. The urge to pull him close, to keep him safe, was itching in Edge and he forcibly held it back, let Rus tell his story.
“i never expected the machine to actually work,” Rus admitted. “dings was messing with it for so long. then we were here. my bro was only supposed to talk to the royal scientist and we were gonna hightail it back. easy peasy lemon squeezy.” Rus chuckled darkly, “turned out the lemonade was too sour after all. dings was pretty upset to find out the guy he was looking for was gone and so was his successor.”
Rus’s smile eased into something warmer, familiar, “it was tori who got me to start studying, you know. my bros always kept me on a tight leash back home, it was dangerous to even go outside, but here? i went out, tried to make some friends, ended up sleeping around some. wasted time,” Rus admitted, “tori suggested i work on my degree. i didn’t see the point at first, our pop always told us our purpose. i was there to power the machine. but, tori has this thing about being everyone’s mom.”
“Indeed, she does,” Edge murmured, recalling his days imprisoned after the coup, with good meals and care instead of execution.
“i think maybe that’s why she’s such a good queen. she told me pops was wrong,” Rus laughed a little in a puff of smokey breath and shook his head. “told me he was an asshole, actually, and that i deserved to have what i wanted out of life.”
“we argued about it, me and dings. drove blue nuts. blue was…he was the failure, pops said. at least dings was a scientist, but blue couldn’t even manage that. dings always told him his purpose was to be our caretaker and he tried damn hard at it.” Rus sighed, dropping his head back against the shed siding with a muffled thunk, “he hates it when we fight.”
“But you did it,” Edge said softly, “you got your degree, you’re working on your PhD and you’re doing a good job of it, at that.” Even through the growing cold he felt an inner warmth at the smile Rus flashed him, the real one.
“i did. i got so close.” Rus’s voice broke slightly, “things were horrible when we left, i can’t even imagine how they are now. and dings, he needs to fix the core. that was the skill that was built into him.” His smile soured back into bitterness, “it’s a compulsion, i don’t think he can help it. he has to be better than our pop. he has to be the one to save us all. blue believes everyone is worth saving, but he’s a protector, and me? i’m just a battery. i was never meant to have any of this.”
A honey-tinted tear slipped out from beneath his goggles and wound its way down, slowly freezing against the chilled bone of Rus’s skull and Edge’s control broke. He crawled across the short distance between them, scuffled through the snow and pulled Rus into his arms. He held on briefly, achingly tight before drawing back far enough to shake him, a little, and Rus looked at him with wide, startled eye lights.
“You are more than simply your father’s intentions,” Edge told him fiercely. “You’re brilliant and kind, and…and funny…wonderful…” He choked, unable to express the wild emotions burning in his soul; if there were words for it, Edge did not know them. Love was too shallow a word, too small, it couldn’t possibly hold everything Edge was feeling, all of it strangled in grief.
Rus reached up and his gloved fingers were gentle against Edge’s cheekbone. “it’s okay,” he said, softly, “i always knew we’d have to go back. i got to see this. i got to be with you. it’s okay,” he said again, crooned it, as if Edge were the one in pain. Perhaps he was, his soul ached as fiercely as if it was threatening to crack. “i saw so much here on the surface. i got to see the stars, i got to come here and see this.” He looked up at the sky, at the brilliant colors still churning within it along with a million twinkling lights looking down on them. “i was never going to get to stay, but i got to see this.”
“It’s not enough,” Edge said hoarsely. Not enough, Rus was supposed to leave here and go back into the sun, and instead, he was going where Edge could never follow, couldn’t protect him, and again, Edge would have given a portion of his own grieving soul not to see that sadness infecting Rus’s smile.
“i love you, you know,” Rus told him, achingly soft. “i know it’s not fair to tell you now, but i can’t keep it to myself. i need you to know it.”
Edge closed his sockets, shutting out Rus’s face and the aurora, saw only blackness and it wasn’t the cold that sent a tremor through him. Then he opened them again, looked into Rus’s face and saw the truth of it, the yearning. And the hopelessness. The need to say it back burned, words already forming on his tongue, but instead Edge blurted, “Stay the two weeks.”
Rus blinked, startled. That was clearly not the reaction he expected to his quiet confession, “but, the people—"
“It’s been two years,” Edge countered, “two weeks means nothing to your world and everything to you. Don’t let your brother’s compulsion drive you. Toriel—"
He almost said she was on his side, couldn’t, his knowledge was gleaned from their talk and words already thickening in his throat, his promise threatening to choke him when Rus kissed him softly, stopping him.
“i can guess about tori,” Rus said quietly, then, softer, “two more weeks.” He looked up again and even behind his goggles, the auroras couldn’t match the soft beauty of his eye lights. “there’s no stars back home. i’m gonna miss them.”
He fell silent, leaning against Edge’s side. Edge wrapped an arm around him and pulled Rus in closer, holding him tightly through the layers of his coat. He was starting to shiver; they were both getting too cold and he was about to suggest they move into the vehicle shed at the very least when Rus spoke again.
“it got so bad towards the end,” Rus whispered, “we stayed holed up in the lab, mostly, but we could see what was happening. monsters were getting more violent, losing control, gaining lv. pops’ diagrams on the core were incomplete. it was dings’s idea to come to another world and check theirs. i had to come, of course and we couldn’t leave Blue alone, so we all came.”
Rus kicked one booted foot idly, scraping up snow with his heel. “s’weird. even the snow is different here. back home it seems…stale somehow. used. maybe it’ll be better when dings gets the core up and running.” Rus sighed. “i never would have come to the station if i’d thought he was close to a breakthrough. it’s weird, i thought i had enough time.” Rus drew back a little, looking at Edge with that soft smile back in place. “but it sure wasn’t a waste.”
Almost, Edge kissed him again, hesitated with their mouths a breath away. Something about what Rus said niggled, something… “Weird.”
“heh,” Rus chuckled, “it’s double weird hearing you say weird. doesn’t seem like your kind of slang, bossman.”
Edge barely heard him. His brother had a breakthrough on the core, Rus said, an unexpected breakthrough. Edge cursed himself, replaying what Rus told him. He'd been foolishly focused on the information about Rus and why they were here, not on what changed to bring them to the station.
"What was your brother studying, exactly?” Edge demanded. He took Rus’s shoulders in both gloved hands, holding him, “You said he was looking for information about the Core."
Rus blinked uncertainly, his browbone furrowing, “um, papers, mostly. tori has lots of stuff from the old royal scientist, dings was wading through tons of it. i didn’t see much, he didn’t want any help. he was afraid we’d miss something. guess he found what he was looking for.”
“Yes, I think he did,” Edge said sourly, “A patsy.” Edge climbed to his feet and held out a hand to help Rus, “I’d like to know what was in those notes your brother found and I think we should ask the former royal scientist.”
“what?” Rus wobbled for a second, catching his balance after sitting for so long, “seriously? you think they’d talk to you? tori said they don’t—
“I should hope so,” Edge said, dryly, “she’s in her lab.” And very likely watching them on her cameras.
Rus went still, croaking out, “alphys??”
“You didn’t know?” Edge slanted Rus a look, but he believed him.
“no!” Rus spluttered, already heading back towards the station, Edge trailing after him. “tori didn’t talk about it, i didn’t even think to ask anyone else, why would i?”
“Maybe your brother isn’t as discriminating,” Edge said, under his breath, letting the wind tear the words away. It was more than a little suspicious that his brother solved the issue of core technology when Rus was in the only place that possessed a replica of the original. Edge didn’t believe in coincidence.
“Rus,” Edge jogged to catch up, taking hold of Rus’s elbow to stop him as he asked, “Do you trust me?”
“yes,” Rus said, unhesitatingly.
“I trust you, too,” Edge said, softly, and leaned in to give him a brief, chilly kiss. “Come on. You’re freezing and I have questions.”
“you’re the boss,” Rus said. It was only a shadow of his normally teasing self, but it was something. He took Rus’s gloved hand in his own and together, they made their way to the main building.

Chapter 15.) Skeletons.
It was Saturday but not just your typical Saturday. This was Laurie’s chance to get her daughter the hell outta dodge of the upcoming full moon. While she was having breakfast at Tucker’s with Shane, she was starting to really worry.
“I swear that girl acts more and more like you every day.” Laurie said to her husband.
“Me?! She’s LITERALLY your living, breathing reflection but yeah sure let’s blame me.” He replies while shaking his head.
“If we don’t get her the hell outta here by the next full moon, she will never leave.”
“I know baby. But you know how she is when she sets her mind to something.”
“I wish she’d set her mind to something other than staying here!”
Laurie sighed.
“I’m scared, Shane. I’m really scared. We can’t let her go through what I went through.”
Shane sipped his coffee before reaching over to take his wife’s left hand in his.
“I swear on my momma. We WILL NOT let that happen. She will be leaving with us tomorrow. There will be no arguing about it.”
Laurie smiled softly. After finishing breakfast they stepped out into the sunlight then decided to take a walk down Main Street.
“I haven’t had a chance to ask you but how are you feeling baby?” Shane asked her as they walked.
“Nostalgic. I’ve missed home. And I won’t lie, part of me is glad to see it. But in the same breath, I hate being here.”
“I know baby. We haven’t been here since we left 30 some odd years ago.”
“It’s not just that though.”
“Then what is it? Tell me.”
“Shane…I-I-I can still feel him. I can still see him. I can still hear his voice. He’s still around. Even though he’s dead.”
“I promise you, you’re safe. He’s dead and rightly so. And even if he wasn’t, there is no way in hell I’d let him anywhere near you.”
“My hero.”
“Always baby.”
Shane smiled at her while wrapping his arm around her shoulders. He knew she was struggling and all he wanted to do was take her pain away. As they walked both took in how much the town square had changed. Most of what Laurie knew 30 years ago wasn’t there now.
When they got to the park they sat down on her old favorite bench.
“Remember our first date?” He asked her.
“Yeah. You took me to the old drive in then we came here, sat down on this bench and tried to count as many stars as possible.” She replies.
Shane laid his wife’s head on his left shoulder.
“I know you’re struggling. I know being home is bittersweet.”
He felt tears fall on his shoulder.
“I didn’t think it’d be this hard. I just knew that I’d see this place and I’d hate it as I always have. I didn’t think that I’d miss it so much.” She said as her voice cracked.
“I know baby. Don’t cry. It’s hard to come back here after all this time and not feel anything.”
Shane rubbed her back as she cried.
“It’s okay baby. Let it out. Let it all out.”
When her tears finally subsided, Laurie took a deep breath.
“Thank you.”
Shane kissed the side of her head.
“Always baby.”
Laurie looked up and suddenly had an idea.
“I wanna do something.”
“What baby?” Shane asked.
“…I wanna go see mama and daddy.”
Shane nodded.
After going by Alfred’s flower shop Shane and Laurie drove a little ways out of town to S.R. Timmons National Cemetery. Laurie laid the flowers at the grave of her parents.

Laurie laid her hand on the grave stone with Shane right beside her.
“Hi mama. Hi daddy. I’m home…” she whispered.
It had been 30 years since she’d seen her parents grave.
“I know you’re probably furious that it’s taken me this long to come back. And I wouldn’t blame you if you haunted me for the rest of my life because of it. But I want you to know that…I miss you so much.”
Shane knelt next to his wife as she took a shaky breath.
“I have so much to say but I don’t know where to start. I’m sure you watched it all from heaven but I have to tell you myself. I became a nurse like you were mama. And I found a man that is just as stand up as you were daddy. We got married at a courthouse. I know it probably wasn’t the wedding that you and daddy would’ve hoped for mama but…I wish both of you were there.”
She stopped as her voice hitched.
“Anyway, you have a granddaughter. We named her Naia Michelle. She’s a giant handful but you’d love her nonetheless. Maybe even more than you ever loved me. And your son…well we won’t get into that. But now I need you. I need you to help me bring my baby home. She’s in danger and she won’t listen to me. The wolves here mean her no good. And I’m scared that if she doesn’t leave with us tomorrow, I’ll never see her again. Mama…daddy…I need you.”
She burst into tears with her husband right next to her.
“It’s okay baby. They hear you. I promise, they hear you.”
“I know they do but it’s Naia who doesn’t…” Laurie said through her tears.
Shane took her face into his hands before speaking.
“Look at me baby. Naia will. We will make sure that she will.”
Shane held her close before speaking to the plaque in front of him.
“I never got to meet you two but I met your daughter and I fell head over heels for her. She has made my life better. She gave me the greatest gift in life. She gave me a daughter. Naia is beautiful. She’s smart. She’s talented. She’s strong willed. And God knows that girl is as stubborn as her mother. And now she is determined to stay and I can’t stand it. I need her at home, where she’d be safe. She’s not safe here. If she stays here her mother and I are afraid that she’ll wind up hurt or dead. I can’t have that. So please help us bring our girl home.” The two sat in a somber yet comfortable silence as Laurie reflected on her parents.
“Thank you.”
“For what?” Shane asks her.
“For coming with me. I needed this.” She replies.
“Baby there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”
“I think I’m ready now.”
“Are you sure babe?” He asks.
“Yeah. Besides we still need to get our girl and get out of here. But it was good to see mama and daddy.” She replies.
“Alright. Let’s go. We have a long afternoon ahead of us.”
Meanwhile Naia was sitting at the bar with her laptop open at Buck’s showing Layla her nursery design.

“What do you think?” Naia asked Layla.
“I LOVE IT! It’s beautiful!” Layla replies.
“And it’s neutral. Just the way you like it.”
“Thank you so much Naia! I can’t wait to show Callum.”
“You think he’ll like it?” Naia asks.
“Trust me if I like it then he’ll like it.” She replies.
“And here I thought wolves were supposed to be the dominant ones.”
Layla snickered.
“I know that’s a dig at Roman.”
“It’s not a dig! It’s a smartass observation.”
“If you say so…”
“I do say so!” Naia said emphatically.
The two giggled just as Callum walked in.
“Hello girls.” He said to them.
“Heyyyyy!” They replied.
“What are you two up to?” He asks.
“Naia was showing me her design ideas for the baby’s nursery. Here take a look.” Layla replied.
Callum studies the design.
“Well what do you think?” Layla asks him.
“Very nice. I like it. I think it’s perfect for the baby.” He replies.
Naia’s jaw dropped.
“Told you!” Layla teased her.
“You must have some kinda mind control over him.”
“Yeah I do. It’s called the munchkin in my stomach.”
Naia shook her head and smirked.
“Are you ready to go love?” He asks Layla.
“Yeah I’m ready. You coming Naia?” She replies.
“Not quite yet. I’m gonna run by my uncle’s house first so I’ll see you later.”
“Okay. And thank you again Naia.” Callum said to her.
“You’re welcome. As for you young lady, we got baby shopping to do!”
“My favorite pastime!”
They shared a laugh before leaving the bar. When Naia got back to her uncle’s place, she was met by her parents who were sitting at the kitchen table looking through an old photo album.
“I didn’t think you two would still be here.”
“Is it Sunday?” Shane asks.
“Nope.” She replies.
“Then we’re still here.” Laurie said to her.
“Where’s uncle Zane?” Naia asks.
“In the shower.” Shane replied.
“Then how’d you two get in the house?” Naia asked.
“I still have a key, Naia. You forget I grew up in this house.” Laurie replies.
“Touché. What’s that?” Naia asks.
“Family album.” Laurie replies.
“Can I see?” Naia asks.
“Have a seat.” Laurie replies.
Naia sat next to her mother and looked at the page of old photos.

“Are these two your parents?” Naia asked, pointing to the couple.
“Yes. That’s mama and daddy, right after they got married in Parkersburg.” Laurie replied.
“They’re beautiful.”
“Thank you.”
“They were amazing.” Zane said as he came into the kitchen.
“Yes they were. Daddy built this house with his own two hands.”
“Really?” Naia asks.
“Yup. He was a carpenter. He could build you a mansion out of a mound of dirt.” Laurie replies.
“And what about your mother?” Naia asks.
“She was a nurse.” Laurie replies with a smile.
“So is that why you became a nurse mom?” Naia asks.
“Yes. I wanted to be just like her.” Laurie replies.
“What were their names?” Naia asks.
“Susanna and Lewis. Mama’s maiden name was Wright.” Laurie replies.
“I wish I could’ve met them.”
“They would’ve loved you. Probably would’ve spoiled you rotten if they had gotten the chance.”
“You mean like how they used to do you?” Zane asked.
“They did not spoil me!” Laurie protested.
“Ha! They all but neglected me when you were born.”
“Can you blame them?” Laurie asked.
“Yes I can! I was here long before you were thought of!” Zane replied.
“Somebody sounds jealous.” Laurie teased.
“Me? Jealous? Of you?” Zane asked his sister.
“Yes. You’re jealous. You always have been.” Laurie replies.
“Such a diva!”
“Now that we can agree on!” Shane quipped.
“What were your parents like?” Naia asked.
Zane contorted his face to do an impression of their father.
“Simon! Watch your sister! You know she can’t go wandering off into the woods by herself!”
Laurie snickered.
“Jackass!”
“Thank you! I’ll be here all week.”
“I didn’t know your name is Simon, uncle Zane.”
Zane chuckled.
“Yes. Simon Zane Roberts. I was named after my mother. And your mother was named after papa. Somehow Laurie Michelle is the same as Lewis Michael.”
“Semantics.”
Laurie turned to the next page to a newspaper clipping. The headline took Naia by surprise.

Naia looked over at her mother who was pale.
“Mama?” Naia asks.
Laurie’s hand was trembling.
“Baby are you okay?” Shane asked.
“I…I…this…” she tried to say.
Zane put his hand over his sister’s.
“It’s okay squirt.”
“You kept it?” She asked in a whisper.
“Yes. I couldn’t throw it out. I didn’t know how to.” Zane replied.
Laurie looked haunted as she ran her hand over the newspaper clipping.
“It…it…was my fault…”
“What?” Naia asked her mother.
“The accident…it was my fault…” her mother replied clearly haunted.
“Squirt…it wasn’t your fault. And you know it wasn’t!” Zane spoke up.
“The state fair…daddy and mama were taking me…it was an early birthday present…if they hadn’t they’d still be alive.”
“Mama what happened?” Naia asks.
“I don’t remember.” Laurie replies.
“I do.” Zane said quietly.
“You do?” Naia asks.
Zane sat across from his sister.
“Yes. Mama, papa and squirt were coming back from the state fair in Huntington…when he lost control of his car and hit a tree then flipped over. Papa died on impact and mama…she died at the hospital.”
“I thought she died in the crash too…” Laurie said to her brother.
“No the truth is she died at the hospital. I told you that she died in the crash because I couldn’t bring myself to take you to her when you woke up. She was brain dead and I had to make the decision to take her off life support.”
“What do you mean when mama woke up?” Naia asked.
“According to what the police told me, squirt was sleeping in the backseat. They thought she was dead too until she woke up crying for mama before passing out again.” Zane replied.
“I don’t remember any of that.”
“Of course you don’t. You were 4.”
“How old were you uncle Zane?” Naia asked.
“I had just turned 17, 2 weeks before the accident.” Zane replied.
“Why weren’t you with them?” Shane asks.
“I was staying with Toby Robinson and his family that weekend. Toby and I were fishing when Toby’s dad came to get us. He said he was taking me to the hospital because of the accident.” Zane replied.
“If you were 17 when your parents died how were you and mama able to stay here?” Naia asks.
“Mama’s aunt Henrietta who lived in Parkersburg came to stay with us until I turned 18. That’s when I was old enough to buy the house. Thankfully it didn’t cost that much back then.” Zane replied.
Laurie just stared at the newspaper clipping.
“Mama?” Naia asks.
“We went to see them…” Laurie replies.
“You and daddy?” Naia asked.
“Yes. Your mother wanted to see them, so we went.” Shane replied.
“I didn’t think I’d ever go back.”
“You went back before I did.” Zane said to his sister.
“What do you mean?” Laurie asked Zane.
“I stopped going to visit mama and papa about 15 years ago.” He replies.
“Why?” Laurie asks her brother.
“Because I figured that they were tired of hearing me beg.” He replied.
“Beg for what?” She asked. Her tone was suddenly short.
“I used to beg them to bring you home. Every year on the anniversary of the accident and their birthdays, I would pray and beg them to send you home.” He replies.
“I’m sure you were miserable.” Laurie said to her brother.
“I was. I really truly was.”
“Good. Serves you right.” Laurie said before closing the photo album and handing it to her brother.
“Keep it. There’s not much that I can do with it.” Zane said to her.
“I don’t want it. That’s why I didn’t take it or any of what’s left of mama’s jewelry when I left.” Laurie replies.
“You can’t just forget it, squirt.”

“Until you are lying in the grave next to them.” She replied.

“No it’s fine, sweetie. I guess this is what I get for letting my sister back into my home.” Zane said to Naia.
“Correction: this is MY home. Because last time I checked, you signed ownership of this house to me when you decided to gamble your entire life away and couldn’t pay back your debts!” Laurie sneered at her brother.
“Enough! I don’t know what’s going on between you two but this isn’t the time or place.” Naia said, trying to keep the peace between them.
“You’re right baby. Besides, I'm done with this place. It’s going up for sale first thing in the morning.”
Zane’s eyes went wide.
“You can’t be serious!” Zane said in a panicked tone.
“As a heart attack.” Laurie replied coolly.
Zane sighed heavily.
“I understand that you are angry with me and that you probably hate me but Laurie please! You can’t just sell the only home I have ever known!”
“I hate it for you but this place has got to go!”
“Laurie for the love of God, not even you can be that damn cruel!”
Laurie’s eyes blazed with unbridled fury.
“Watch…me!” Laurie hissed before turning on her heels and walking outside with Shane right behind her.
Naia was completely stunned while Zane was utterly heartbroken and dejected.

Thoughts journal Ninjago season 13!! 🖤🖤 (4/4)
Here we are, at the end of just another season of Ninjago! And I've gotta say, until now it has been very good, I think I'm liking this season better than Prime Empire and Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu. I liked them too, but this one feels more complete and deep, also LILLY GOT A BACKSTORY HECK YEAH 😍😍
Prime Empire had one really great ending, so I'm very curious how this season will conclude! Spinjitzu burst? Some last minute plot twist? Cole and Vania confirmed...? 🙄

It was cute that both tribes immediately refused to surrender, not sure if it was for pride or they actually care about their new ninja friends, but it was nice

She is so adorable, I really love her. Wished we've seen more of her bond with her father, it felt a little easy her giving up on him. Idk, Sky and Chen didn't have that much of a bond but she struggled a lot! But she is super cool and cute, I ADORE her 💕
This sounds like a pretty good experience for Lloyd who FINALLY spent a season without being scarred for life!!! He even met a princess who didn't plan his death!!! Montgomery things are getting better 💚
Well, that surprised me, I guess Cole and Vania like each other but not heavily? Just a very light mood, like they care a lot but no other step further. I'm very happy about this choice, you can see it as a couple if you want, but you can also say they are just good friends. Nice 👍

FINAL THOUGHTS
I think I enjoyed Prime Empire's finale more than this one, but this season with all of its episodes was absolutely AMAZING 🖤
The Skull Sorcerer wasn't necessarily a bad villain, but the story kinda went into another direction in my opinion so his part wasn't fundamental. Which isn't a bad thing for me, it's actually new and exciting see the attention to the story instead of the villain, and I did enjoy how they made fun of how cliche he was being 😂
Vania was GREAT. Wished we had more time with her father to really establish what kind of bond they had, but overall I loved her, new best girl acquired 💛💛💛
FREAKING ROCK MOM!! FREAKING LILLY!! I'm so emotional just thinking about this family, omg, THIS is the content I want for Ninjago! Impactful, that makes sense, connected to the heart that makes you so much closer to a character! Finally the Rock family is getting more complex 🖤
I think this season really gave Cole justice, we got her mom's story, we've got him leading a team again, we've got him with a cool new power! 😍😍
For the other ninja it was okay, I really liked the shenanigans with the tribes and the cultures were really fun to explore. Was kinda like a side quest and for me didn't bring that much to the main story, but it was fun and it's fair, Cole had all the attention he deserved 👌
FIGHTING ANIMATION OMG HECK FREAKING YEAH 10/NINJA-GOOOO ❤💚💙🖤🤍🌊
Beautiful designs for the characters, in particular the Shintaro citizens, and also wonderful backgrounds and sceneries, that I thought were starting to lack but here seems much nicer to look at 🤩
What can I say? Ninjago still knows how to mess with my heart, and I'm so very happy about it. I think the so wanted Cole season was definitely worth it 🖤🖤🖤
Now, I heard voices about a possible Nya season... ABSOLUTELY YES, YES TO EVERYTHING, QUEEN GETTING HER OWN SEASON YES YES YES!!! 😍😍😍🌊🌊🌊 Besides that apparently Maya will come back, which is a dream coming true, if they give Nya the same attention they gave to Cole this season, I will be happy 😊

my ramblings about the new intro for the owl house. yes i'm a mcyt blog, and what about it
yoooooo the eye looks so cool!! also it's on fire and kind of turned sideways. probably symbolism but it's too late to think about that lmaoo
LUZ MY BELOVED :DDD her cape looks fucking amazing and her casting the glyph looks so dynamic and pretty, can't wait to see her this season, i love her
EDA :DD also missed her. she looks more mismatched this time around with her grey eye and the dark chest jewelry thing, and fsdfsdkj i am scared for her. ALSO THE ANIMATION IS SO PRETTY AND SMOOTH THE ENTIRE TIME
KING!!!! he just popped out of nowhere so true as he should, lmaoo and eda just looks at him like
WILLOW HER POWER!! she's the best i love her
GUS!!! aww he looks so grown up, the best boy ever
AMITY :DD badass as ever she's so cool

oooh in this next part the owl house and the castle engravings things are the same size, which seems very inchresting, the owl house family is very powerful mhmm
hrrrrrrrghghgh this part makes me uh scared for these three characters. the frame's they're in remind me of playing cards, and as you can see they flip over to show them all in different poses, more disheveled, probably in distress of some sort, but the worst part is the way belos's hand seems to pick them up, as if they're, well, just playing cards. anyway good luck to these guys because uhhhhhhhhh (kikimora reminds me of that one school field trip tour guide who wouldn't let you eat lunch, so uh rip to her ig, we don't really know who the middle guy is yet, but already have gender envy for him, huh, and i'm still mad at lilith but she's growing on me so i hope nothing too bad happens to her bc she's already kind of been through it. tho pretty sure most of us are expecting she won't get through this season unscathed sfdkjsfdjksa)
belos is scary!! i don't know that much about character design but the way the owl house does its masked villains always seemed really unique to me and it never feels overdone because it fits with the atmosphere of the boiling isles a lot so i can't wait to see what they do with him :D also looks like he's fighting someone + plus there's a flash of gold from the lightning right before his eyes flash blue, not sure if that's supposed to parallel eda's and lilith's colors but i thought it was cool. ooh also in the old intro this is king's part. given how we're going to find out more about king's past this is inchresting hmmm
LOOK AT LUZ AGAIN :D MY BELOVED :D the shadows and it being evening are really cool! sets the scene very nicely. TINY NOSE!!! dfkjsdfkjl the worm i think it's really cool how they kept this part the same with a couple minor changes like the lighting and eda's eye! it kind of gives you a sense that the season is still going to be the show we know and love, just obviously with changes as the story advances
luz and her light :D fadsjkfdskj not sure what they're called but the nebula things in the sky are really pretty! they make the world feel a little wider if that makes sense, as in there's more out there we haven't seen
LOOK AT THAT BORDER!!! IT LOOKS SO COOL!! the skeletons are so funky and the other symbols (i think those might be glyphs??) make it feel like it's tying back to something old like the history we were introduced to in season one
the elements' animation just look cool as fuck and are just a very nice reminder of how luz's skills have grown so much
AHHH I CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON TWO :DDDD

new Hadestown au, ICARUS!ORPHEUS, wherein orpheus is not the world’s greatest musician but rather the world’s greatest inventor/mechanic/tinkerer. his creations are wondrous and beautiful and a miracle. Orpheus his mission is to create something that will repair the world--take what’s broken, make it whole.
Orpheus is still very much an artist--only his art in this AU is visual instead of auditory. and he’s still poor! not everything he makes is immediately useful for survival and y’know, hardly anyone has the money to buy things, and he has a propensity to just. give things away, especially the smaller trinkets he makes. and they take a Long Time to make. so he still works at hermes’ bar
SO!!!
this orpheus is body pain solidarity KDSKFJH
he has a fucked up back from all the heavy lifting he does around the workshop, being hunched over while he works on stuff, and being stuck in weird positions for extended periods of time when he’s working on machines and whatever, especially the bigger ones
also he’s got a wrist brace
he has a set of gear he wears a lot especially when he’s in his workshop
1) his wing pack! he built it himself and he’s proud. the pack was also made to help with his back problems. he doesn’t wear his mechanic gear when he’s working at the bar, but sometimes he’ll leave the wings on because back hurty. also, following w icarus, the wings are kept smooth & together and waterproofed w wax, kinda like a gloss. he reapplies every so often
2) his goggles! every part about the design is impractical (the red lenses and the beak) but i like them. they protect his eyes from flying bits and sparks and sawdust etc. when he’s working and wind when he’s flying
3) his boots! they’re sturdy workin’ boots, and have a talon function to clasp onto and lift things up. especially useful for moving bigger things around the workshop, up to higher levels and what have you, and he gets to flit around the whole space with minimal usage of ladders. (yes, they’re inspired by Vulture’s boots from Spider-Man: Homecoming)
(ALSO. the model of his wings are white crow wings, bc of the myth of Coronis)
because in greek mythology, crows started out white and had beautiful voices and the reason they turned black and got croaky calls is because a crow had to tell Apollo that his lover, Coronis, left him to marry a mortal 
and Apollo got so upset he burned the crow and then burned Coronis to death, or burned the crow and then turned Coronis into a crow, depending on the version

so there are some... parallels here
also, IIRC crow wings are elliptical-type wings, meaning they’re good for a lot of control and maneuverability in tight spaces. good for the workshop
also he makes automata too! he has this little mockingbird to help him around the workshop. lots of calls for lots of signals, like how a car will have diff beep signals for low gas or parking brake on or door left open or key left in etc... little bird can measure and alert for lots of things
he’s also less noodle-y than canon orpheus because of how much he uses his arms and legs doing lifting, work, and flying
he’s not like. Built or anything. but hes got some strength to him
he doesn’t just make really good machines either; he’s absolutely as skilled in fine, delicate things as much as the big pieces—he sees the details himself, has to make it himself, he’s as skilled in silversmithy or goldsmithy as he is in mechanics, and i imagine he has skills in metallurgy too. maybe even a bit of glassblowing? just for piece assembly. all his pieces will fit most perfectly if he makes them himself
things like the Silver Swan automaton (i’d link a video but external links are illegal on tumblr)
also... i don’t know if they manage to get married this time, but they at least get the wedding bands
lover, tell me, if you can--who’s gonna make the wedding bands?
@supercantaloupe: the river gonna give us the wedding bands -- he draws the mineral, the stones from the silt, and crafts them himself
SO, he charms eurydice with one (or many) of his dazzling creations that also have usages in practicality and survival
as is the youzhe, she leaves when he gets to obsessive with working on something, holed up in his workshop instead of like. Surviving the winter
they last longer into the winter this time though because again, he does have a couple of machines good for tiding over the winter and surviving, and eurydice can operate them. but he’s too caught up with creating something to fix the world to repair them when they break down
when he leaves, he leaves his mockingbird to take care of his workshop while he’s gone. make sure there’s not leaks or fires, etc., keep everything in working order
the trip to hadestown still takes a long time, but less time than in canon, given that orpheus gets there on a pair of wings, though he gets grounded plenty of times due to bad weather. plus, his wings aren’t really meant for long-distance
so in the end the time still matches up; the events underground still happen on the onset of proper spring
he sails over the wall of the Styx on his wings, but it’s a feat easier said than done; it really is high and wide, just... hundreds of feet tall, and i headcanon that the “wall” is in fact seven layers of fortification because some myths say the River Styx wraps around the underworld seven times
and he is not a high altitude flier
uhhhhhhhhh blah blah something something ... i’m not clear on all the details but here are a few things:
orpheus gets the shit kicked out of him in Papers as usual and the fates hold his wings over him instead of his guitar
i have no idea how If It’s True goes
SOMEWHERE there’s Hey Little Songbird II (thank you to @supercantaloupe​ for authoring this idea);
it's Hades to Orpheus this time. Ironic, as he sings and flies, a real songbird.
and orpheus, that inspired inventor, that mechanic, that engineer, blessed by Hephaestus himself, being tempted to stay. It's a marvel of engineering, those factories. But they're rough around the edges, dirty, inefficient, unrefined. Imagine all the work he could do. Imagine how grand it would be, with just his help. And imagine how much fun it would be to fix it all!
but since he's fallen in love - and lost her once already - he has to pause and think. it's too good to be true, isn't it? Is it true? Can he really stay here forever, with parts and tools and endless projects worthy of his skill and attention - at least, without her?
ok back to me writing stuffs
there is no Epic I / Epic II / Epic III; the titles are now Trial I / Trial II / Trial III, like trial runs of prototypes, and on the third one it has a double meaning as a trial of judgement
Trial III goes as such:

Hades orders him to build.  An impressive invention in turn for his life – a chance he gives only because his wife is smitten with interest. 
Orpheus gets three days and no more, and when he is finally ordered to come before the throne of basalt and steel he brings his invention. And Hades gives a curt, mocking laugh, because all Orpheus has in his hands is a simple box of bronze, cheap and adorably human. 
 He almost orders for Orpheus' death the moment he sees it, but then the boy lifts the lid and reveals a mechanical flower. Petals made out of metal rusted rosy, nectar of flecks of fool's gold. 
Delicate and beautiful; extremely finely spun, as if the metal were only woven fibers. It is as soft as any silk.
"Where did you get that," the king snaps in a hurry. "How did you know–" 
And then, with the twist of a key, the invention reveals to be a music box and long lost chords fill the Underworld.
(i originally had the idea that he builds a planetarium that replicates the summer above, a caught snippet of the thing that hades could never make on a large scale. a beautiful thing with flowers that blossomed and played the old song as hades brushed his hands across them, sun above. but i figured it’s probably more in line with the sensibilities of Hadestown if orpheus had created something less... grand)
so eurydice and orpheus are granted their chance to leave.
i’m not sure what the test is, because he’s got to fly out with eurydice clutched in his talons, and i want him to be as much a victim of his doubt as in canon
but he has to follow this flight path with absolute perfection, down to the flap. you fly too high, the flames of hadestown will catch him. he flies too low, the flames of hadestown will catch her.
i think, in his paranoia, he flies too high, and his wings catch fire
his wings are on fire--his arms are strapped in to them. he’s burning up. he’s burning.
he’s slowing down in his ascent. in a moment, he knows that if they’re going to make it, it’ll only be one of them, and... he’s not going to drop eurydice. he can’t do that to her.
when his wings can no longer climb, he throws her the final distance to the surface. she turns around and reaches desperately for him, but he’s too far away.
he falls. a comet.
he breaks.

the fact is, he dies
but he dies in hadestown. so now he’s just... well, one, no chance of going back aboveground. two, now he’s... sitting at the bottom of that long climb, broken and in pain, surrounded by the charred skeleton of his wings, broken and burned feathers, drips of melted oil and wax, and blood
he’s... there for a long time, just suffering, before someone comes to see if they made it out, and finds him at the bottom
hades sees this as an opportunity to bring him back, let him heal, and put him onto projects, perhaps “to get your mind off of it all,” but. orpheus doesn’t want to work. he doesn’t want to do anything

Hades says he'll squander his god given talents to just sit around all day but Orpheus won't listen
hades has just zero fucking clue how to deal with a depressed human
"have I not given him all he could want, metal, tools, a workbench? Bed, bread, fire? Strength in his bones? And yet he refuses still? The boy must be mad," he cries, angry

“you ruined a perfectly good talented young man is what you did. look at him, he's got depression"
persephone herself is a mess (less so after Trial III) but she has at least some sense—she is more in touch with mortals than him, spending time with them up on the surface and throwing revels, but also greeting those who lost their lovers/sisters/brothers/mothers/fathers in the winter before
persephone encouraging orpheus to build, not for her sake or for Hades', but for his own. little flowers, little birds, wind up toys and music boxes. something to keep him going
s-aint-elmo: she brings him pressed flowers from the surface, little trinkets, tokens of the green. orpheus only lets the first few wilt and rot at the corner of his table.
flowers bloom until they rot and fall apart
it's a sad, painful reminder
he eventually has the resolve to rebuild his wing pack—better this time, because really, he feels crippled without them after living w em for so long
edit: (and the feathers are black, a la the crow myth)
when hades first sees him like, passing by w wings on his back, he turns to persephone like “what have you been saying to him?” “only what he needs to hear, husband”
he has a great fear of actually getting off the ground at first, though
he’ll perch at the edge of a rooftop, but... doesn’t move. it’s a leap of faith he doesn’t feel like he can take
he always saw air as just a medium to move through, that it would support him, as easy as swimming
now he sees straight through it to the ground
he has burn scars across the entire back of his arms, hands, and fingers
it’s a reminder every time he gets to working
rough patchy skin. calloused fingers from work
big sigh
eurydice goes home.
there is the empty shell of his workshop. his many machines and trinkets and tools and his hundreds of unfinisheds and thousands of scraps of plans, and… his bird left to care for the shop after god knows how many weeks or months.
it flies down and greets her, some string of whistles and beeps she only half understands. then it asks for orpheus
she tells it that he fell; he’s not coming back, it’s too late
the bird sticks by her from there on out, the last “living” remnant of her lover, besides his shell of a workshop

Legend of the Crystal Skull Review:

Atmosphere/Layout:
I loved this game so much! The Nancy Drew games are always stellar at placing you in the world of the game. I have yet to play a series that really roots you in its atmosphere. CRY delivered that at another level. I’ve been to New Orleans, and this game took me back to that trip. I loved how everything in the house was slightly crooked to reflect the kookiness of Bruno Bolet, as well as make things more eerie. I remember how the intro to the game scared me as a kid, yes, I got scared of the Skeleton man as a kid. Imagine freaking out to the skeleton man attack and then cutting to Renee’s creepy eyes as a kid! Even as an adult, Renee’s eyes creep me out, and no way was I ever going to drink that concoction! This game has a lot of odd things that you can eat: mysterious beverage that may or may not kill you, chocolate that definitely will, and expired bubble gum that surprisingly does not kill you. Okay, back to atmosphere. The ambience of the game was consistent, even when you played Bess’s portions which was supposed to take you away from the eeriness of the Bolet house for a bit. The rain effect and the semi-dark state of the house because of the electricity outage definitely amped up the fear and creepiness. You definitely took cautious steps in and out of the house. The graveyard. THE GRAVEYARD. THE GRAVEYARD. I think the exploration of the graveyard might be my favourite exploration spots of all the games. I love how you can see Nancy’s silhouette and hear her shoes as she traversed the grave. It was big enough to pique curiosity, but not so big that you would get lost. I also appreciated how every grave section had its own design as it made things more memorable. I know some people didn’t like the graveyard scavenger hunt, but I relished it! The earlier games (1-5) had this slight ruthlessness to the game play. There was a slight edge that kept the reader hooked and just a touch fearful, and this game maintained that edge. I really appreciated that, especially since it would pater out a bit in later games.
Music:
This game has one of the best tracks: “Legend”. That alone should put it as a game with an amazing music score, but no, they had to add other titles like “Chatter” and “Bruno”. As someone who loves Jazz, I digged this score. So often I would stop and just listen to the music, and could feel myself get pumped whenever “Legend” would play. Honestly, why hasn’t someone created a Nancy Drew Ambience record yet? The jazz music was a nice contrast to the shadowy layout which added to the “everything is slightly unhinged” element of the game. But man, when the danger music would play, I would get chills. Especially when you’re in Renee’s room or in Bruno’s secret room. Surprisingly those two rooms creeped me more then the graveyard!
I also loved the little noises like the sound of rain, or the way the rain hit the windows. Nancy’s heels as she walked through the graves. The skeletal hand for Charlie’s puzzle. The sound Henry’s chair makes when he moves. Etc. etc.
Characters:
Nancy was amazing as usual. It surprises me how she remains unfazed by everything, but I love that side of her. Bess felt a bit out of character with her resistance to participating in snooping. Usually she’s dying to know what’s up, or help Nancy out, but she wasn’t this time. Still, got to had it too her. Not many friends would sneak into a private meeting and demand her rights despite being surrounded by creepy skeletal men. Some of you might scoff, but y’all would be crapping your pants if you were in the same situation.
So since you technically didn’t know there would be a mystery, it made sense that there were only 3 suspects. I like how Nancy doesn’t start out with an investigation. She mostly wants to figure out who the skeletal man was and why he attacked her, and how that simple curiosity leads her to the crystal skull. It’s a nice progression of plot.
Henry: Henry Bolet is handsome. I know some people might not like the arm sleeve thing or painted nails, but it’s 2020, it’s called aesthetic! Her Interactive over here creating male characters who want to paint their nails way before popular culture accepted it/picked up on it. Haters be jealous. I’m kidding. But still, I loved how much depth they put into this character. How with so little, you understood his character. When he complains about how Bruno sent him away as a child, it revealed that Henry is someone who really needs family. He’s aware his emotional needs are higher than the average person, not because he lost his parents, but just who he is by nature. It also makes his attachment to Summer make more sense. We can easily surmise that Summer was probably the first person to give Henry the emotional security he needed, but that it was clearly done for her own selfish desires. Henry’s inability/or refusal to see it also makes more sense. That being said, the moment we learn about Summer, it takes Henry off the suspect list. Up till then, the game does a good job at making him seem suspicious do to his dealings with Lamont. It’s not a bad thing, but since we only have 3 suspects, his removal immediately makes the culprit an easy 50-50 guess. Not to mention the fact that after blackmailing him (which was kind of mean of Nancy to do to someone who is already being emotionally abused by his girlfriend) he gets sidelined for the rest of the game despite there being a good chunk left to play.
Renee: Classic sweet but deadly suspect. Love how the game kept her super suspicious from the way she acted to the way she would emphasize things. For example, I found it so odd that she remembered the exact percentage of who would receive what in the will, like she had been mulling over that. And the way she ends with mentioning that she was to receive 10% compared to the others getting 30%, so subtle a remark yet it catches the ear of any good detective. And of course, the room and her interest in the occult made the suspicion grow. Unfortunately, I found the whole part about authenticating the skull a bit lackluster and kind of gives the culprit away. I mean Renee said “I wanted to find the skull” when Nancy confronts her about hiding information. After such a confession, wouldn’t the obvious follow up question be “why?”. I can only guess they included this to hype up the “chase” for the skull since we know the Dr. Buford is also looking for it, but the game didn’t really deliver on the urgency so this felt like a lackluster confession. It also came close to the end of the game, so when Renee appeared at the end it wasn’t surprising. Nancy’s faith in Renee was odd, and the fact that she just tossed up the skull—face slap! Nancy, she literally confessed 10 min ago, did you forget!? The ending was nice. I liked how she “forgot” to tell Nancy about Bernie (so malicious!), but then actually forgot that Bernie was in the water.
Dr. Buford: He was interesting. Seems nice and charming, but the more we learn about Bruno’s death, the suspicious he becomes. Love how Bess worries about Buford coming back to take the skull. I still don’t understand what exactly the skeletal society does, other then being pirate fans, but I liked the costumes.
Puzzles:
I love a healthy balance between puzzles and dialogue and this game delivered on that. The dialogue was nicely spaced out throughout the game and added to the characters. Each character had their own way of talking and phrases that stayed true to their character. The one exception is Henry’s “I’ve been naughty but I’ll be nice now” line which threw me off so hard. HELLO?? WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS! It’s so random for a college/uni person to say this. Actually, who says this?? I’ll be honest, my mind went a bit dark and wondered just how bad was Summer abusing him for such a dialogue to come out of him……. poor Henry.
But back to the puzzles. I honestly loved most of the puzzles. I know the bowling ball machine (the one where you have to roll all eyes) annoys people, but I enjoyed it. I also know the graveyard scavenger hunt bored people, but I love puns, and l loved the layout of the house and graveyard so much that running back and forth was so much fun. Solving the clock puzzle and teeth puzzle was also fun, and they made me feel like a genius. The first part of the buzzard puzzle wasn’t bad, it was just annoying to have to turn back and see what affect each gargoyle bird did. The book mentioned that the sounds the gargoyle’s made was important, but I didn’t catch anything. I also liked how the final puzzle was a puzzle that built throughout the game. You didn’t know the eye puzzle would be the final big puzzle, but every little puzzle played a role in being a part of the final puzzle. I just thought that was cool, I like interconnected stuff.
There were three puzzles I did not like. The first was with Bess and the box she had to open. The clue was Hamlet and some numbers. I thought that you had to call Nancy and have her check the library for Hamlet and look up those reference numbers. What was the point of writing Hamlet? Nowhere in the letter did it mention that you have to associate the letter to the number and type out what it spells. Also, it did not mention that you had to restart the counting every time! I had to go online for help with this puzzle. The second puzzle was the second part of the buzzard puzzle. After getting the key, which you don’t get a good look at, you’re supposed to use them on the gargoyles. But I didn’t get that, plus the emblem on each gargoyle was just a feather with notches, so how do you know that the key goes there??? Finally, I hated the wasp puzzle. It was annoying and I don’t know why Nancy didn’t take a handful of loquats at once!
Graphics:
They really hold up despite being 13 years old. Sure, it’s a bit weird around the eyes and mouth, but the rest is stellar. Also, I love how they added in certain quirks that matched each character’s personality. Like Henry kicking his legs up to show he’s someone who doesn’t care about bending the rules, little rebellious. But then the fact that he sits proper when talking shows that he’s not so rebellious and is actually trying to be professional. Also shows the contesting sides of his emotional needs and the military training he would have received. Renee’s position over her pots show that she’s someone tricks you into thinking that she loves to work with her hands (lol, end game “this girl just handed me the skull”. I told you I love puns). It also shows that she prioritizes the small things, and the fact that she’s potting despite being recently laid off (she’s the only character still working despite Bruno’s death) makes her a bit unnerving. Dr. Buford at the French quarters show that he’s someone of charm. Etc. etc.
Plot:
Like I said, loved the slow buildup of plot—how one thing led to another. Don’t know why Ned sent Nancy to do his work, but okay…
The Summer plotline felt like it got accidentally dropped. Like the writers forgot to finish it. Even if it’s just Nancy telling Henry that what he has isn’t healthy/good, or something in the end credits where he finally broke up with her. For all we know, they could still be together.
The introduction of the magical qualities of the skull and Bruno’s death was weird. I like how Bruno’s death became questioned, but while his desire for the skull kind of made sense, it didn’t make sense why Buford or Renee wanted it. It still wasn’t clear at the endgame either. I guess there’s the financial prospect, but that subplot kind of pattered out in favour for the magical plot. It also didn’t make sense that Bruno wanted it for Henry, because let’s be real, he wasn’t a good guardian. It really did seem like Bruno didn’t care for Henry. I mean, why give your nephew a skull instead of what he really wanted/needed, a friend. You can take this a bit darker when you realize that Bruno was giving Henry monetary comfort over emotional comfort and that Henry by end game has come to associate monetary gift to be equivalent to emotional gifts, which just makes his relationship with Summer get even darker.
 Overall, this was a great game. 10/10. One of my favourites and would play again and again. That’s why I bought it, lol!

Manga the Week of 2/24/21
SEAN: As I write this, Texas is being hit with blizzards. Why not curl up… in your dark house with no power… with some manga?
Airship gives us the print volume of the 2nd I’m in Love with the Villainess, and also a print volume for Skeleton Knight in Another World 8.
ASH: I haven’t finished reading the first volume of I’m in Love with the Villainess quite yet, but I suspect I’ll want to pick up the second.
SEAN: Denpa’s site says that The Girl with the Sanpaku Eyes 2 is out next week.
J-Novel Club has a trio of light novels. By the Grace of the Gods 6, Campfire Cooking in Another World 9, and The Greatest Magicmaster’s Retirement Plan 8.
On the manga side, they have The Faraway Paladin 4 and Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles 5.
Kodansha has two print debuts, though we’ve seen them both digitally before. Cells at Work: Baby! is essentially the superdeformed version of the series.
ASH: I enjoyed the original series, but haven’t managed to keep up with all the spinoffs!
SEAN: A Sign of Affection (Yubisaki to Renren) is one that I’ve gushed about before, but here I am gushing about it again. This story of a boy and girl meeting and falling in love, it’s all about communication, as our heroine is hearing impaired, and our globe trotting hero does not know sign language. Fans of Kimi ni Todoke should check this out.
MICHELLE: I missed this when it was a digital debut, so I’m grateful for a second chance at it.
ANNA: Amazingly, this is one of the very few Kodansha digital titles that I have read, and it is absolutely wonderful. It is by suu Morishita, so fans of Shortcake Cake should absolutely pick it up. I’m sure I bought the first couple volumes digitally due to Sean’s gushing and just never posted about it. Morishita does some wonderfully innovative storytelling as the two main characters figure out how to communicate with each other, and the hearing-impaired heroine is portrayed with great sensitivity. I’m so rooting for Yuki and her first real romance!!
ASH: I’m really looking forward to reading this one now that it’s in print. Can’t pass it up with recommendations like that.
MELINDA: Well, how can I possibly resist after that glowing recommendation?
SEAN: Also in print: Heaven’s Design Team 3. The anime is currently airing.
ASH: I have legitimately learned things about animal life reading this series.
SEAN: Digitally the debut is How Do You Do, Koharu? (Gokigenyou, Koharu-san), by the author of (and in the same universe as) Say I Love You. Koharu (the younger sister of Yamato, the male lead in Say I Love You) prefers to keep her friends solely on the digital side… till she’s tempted by a follower who she might want to be more than just friends with. This runs, of course, in Dessert. I hope it is a bit less drama-filled than its parent series.
MICHELLE: I’d seen this one on the release calendar but didn’t realize it had any connection to Say I Love You. Interesting!
SEAN: We also see DAYS 22, Harem Marriage 2, Maid in Honey 6 (the final volume), My Best () Butler 6, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1 2, Shangri-La Frontier 2, What I Love About You 3, and When We’re in Love 5.
Seven Seas’s biggest debut may be one that came out first nearly 10 years ago. After a period where it seemed that you couldn’t go a week without a new volume, the Alice in the Country of _________ series vanished, allegedly due to licensing difficulties with the original creator. But now it’s back… in digital form! It’s getting rolled out over several weeks. This week we get The Clockmaker’s Story and Love Labyrinth of Thorns (Julius) and The Mad Hatter’s Late Night Tea Party 1 & 2 (Blood).
ANNA: I think I’m tapped out of Alice in the Country of stories but I’m amused to see these being released again.
ASH: Oh, wow! I had somehow previously missed this news.
SEAN: In actual new titles, the debut is Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon (Kaketa Tsuki to Donuts), a yuri office romance story that runs in Comic Yuri Hime. Always happy to see more non-high school students.
And there is The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Wizard’s Blue 2, Days of Love at Seagull Villa 2, Failed Princesses 3, and How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? 5.
MICHELLE: I still haven’t even read volume 1 of Seagull Villa!
SEAN: Square Enix Manga debuts Ragna Crimson, a Gangan Joker title whose summary has the words “dark fantasy” and “revenge-fueled quest” and I stopped caring.
In much better Square Enix manga news, we get A Man and His Cat 3.
MICHELLE: Yay!
MELINDA: Yes!
SEAN: Apologies to Tentai Books, I missed their debut light novel which is actually out later this week. World Teacher: Special Agent in Another World (World Teacher: Isekaishiki Kyouiku Agent) is another of those books where the plot is described by the title.
Tokyopop has a debut. The Cat Proposed (Bakeneko Katatte Sourou) is a one-shot BL title from Canna. A man watches a play and sees one of the actors has cat ears. Turns out he’s a bakeneko, and has chosen our protagonist as his spouse!
There’s also the 3rd and final volume of Still Sick.
Vertical has Ajin: Demi-Human 16 and Bakemonogatari’s 7th manga volume.
Yen On has had a few date shifts (try to contain your shock), but we do get a few new volumes this week… and two old ones, as Haruhi Suzumiya 3 and 4 get reprints. 4 is considered the series’ high point.
And there is Do You Love Your Mom (and Her Two-Hit, Multi-Target Attacks?) 8, The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn As a Typical Nobody 5, In the Land of Leadale 2, Konosuba 13, and May These Leaden Battlegrounds Leave No Trace 3.
There’s also a Yen Press title I missed last week, as it’s out this Saturday. Megumi Hayashibara’s The Characters Taught Me Everything: Living Life One Episode at a Time is her new memoir, and Yen is putting it out digitally the same day it comes out in Japan!
ASH: I really hope this is released in print at some point, too! It should be really good.
SEAN: Because of various delays and date shifts, Yen Press has FIVE manga debuts next week. We start with Adachi & Shimamura, the manga version of which we’ve already seen the light novel and the anime. Please enjoy Adachi’s gay panic and Shimamura’s attempts to be a functioning human being in a new medium. This runs in Dengeki Daioh.
Days on Fes is a series about two friends going to rock festivals, and that’s about all it is, from what I hear. Sounds like a Laid-Back Camp vibe. This runs in Comic Newtype.
ASH: Oh, that could fun.
MELINDA: I might be into this? As someone who used to go to a lot of music festivals, that is.
SEAN: The Girl without a Face (Kao ga Nai Onnanoko) is a one-shot from Comic Beam. A boy and girl are in love. She’s a bit… expressionless – literally – but that’s just fine. This looks both cute and spooky?
ASH: This could be fun, too!
SEAN: Golden Japanesque – A Splendid Yokohama Romance is the sort of josei title folks were BEGGING for ten years ago. It runs in Flowers’ online magazine, and its author did Kare First Love, for Viz fans with long memories. A Meiji-era title about a half-Japanese girl who’s discriminated against and the boy who thinks she’s a fairy-tale character.
MICHELLE: Ooh! I actually do own all of Kare First Love, as it happens.
ANNA: I am a Viz fan with a long memory and I think I own most of Kare First Love too. I am officially intrigued and will be picking this up.
ASH: Same!
MELINDA: Same here!
SEAN: Lastly there is ID:Invaded #Brake-Broken, a title which hurts me when I try to say it out loud. It’s the sequel to the anime, and runs in Young Ace.
We also get Eniale & Dewiela 2, Mieruko-chan 2, Overlord: The Undead King-Oh! 6, The Saga of Tanya the Evil 13, Slasher Maidens 2, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun 7, The White Cat’s Revenge as Plotted from the Dragon King’s Lap 2, and A Witch’s Love at the End of the World 2.
ASH: I’ll likely be picking up a few of those, too.
