Ask suggested for the hybrid au a Gloria and Zacian hybrid (hi skitter :D) and I immediately thought about how fun would be to have her as a type of “beware of the monster” type of creature
She is Gloria the brute! Unlike her Pokemon spirit, she knows her power can create terror amongst the people and uses it to scare people away of her domain! But not every human can be so easily scared, especially if it’s a monarch that has no thoughts to begin with-
(And I will admit, I do not know the different types of english, for me Australian, Scottish, and British sound all the same okay I WAS TRAINED IN LATINOAMERICAN ACCENTS DON’T JUDGE ME-)

So post-movie I feel like Bal ends up leaving the knighthood and focuses more on his mechanical/scientific interests. he does cute little DIY videos on the kingdom's tic-tok equivalent building simple machines and basic mechanical repairs. he also has a mini "rate my setup" series (you cannot convince me he didn't build that PC in the lair) but he's really genuine about it and the more unhinged things get the more you can see him sweat as he finds nice things to say and constructive criticism. interspersed of course are silly trend/joke videos that nimona makes him do

All right...for those of you who don't know my thoughts about Wish, yes, I wasn't happy with the finished result, but no, I'm not a hater. I'm mostly just disappointed that this project that had so many good ideas came out so half-baked, and THIS is a perfect example of what I mean.
No, it's not because "Star Boy" appears in it -- at least, not by itself. I do actually like Star's "himbo" personality in this, even if I also completely understand liking the idea of a mute version of the character. (The downside is that the mute Star from the finished film honestly doesn't have much personality outside of just being cute, in contrast to other mute magical Disney characters like Tinker Bell.)
No, the lost potential here is two-fold --
Firstly, I once again felt more emotion watching this storyboarded sequence than I did at any point in the finished film. I smiled hearing the fun banter between Star and Asha, insinuating that they're becoming closer despite their contrasting personalities; I felt some suspense in how Star and Asha were going to get away from evil!Queen Amaya; I even laughed pretty hard at the cat-and-yarn gag! I didn't laugh once while watching the finished movie.
Secondly -- and this point is actually the one I want to focus on more -- is the commentary given about why this scene was cut. I truly think another unspoken reason behind the decision was that this sequence was clearly inspired by the transforming chase scene in Nimona, which Disney of course infamously dropped when they closed Blue Sky Studios and later got picked up by Netflix, only to receive glowing reviews from just about everyone...but one of the core reasons that Head of Story Mark Kennedy cites for why they changed this scene (aside from wanting Star to be mute and not a shapeshifter like other Disney characters, which I'm a bit confused about because yeah, Disney's done cute, mute non-human characters before too -- what about Dopey, Pascal, Maximus, Dumbo, Bambi, Magic Carpet, Sven, and again Tinker Bell?) is that they wanted Asha to be the hero and be able to "solve all her problems" without Star's help.
Up to a point, I understand what Kennedy means -- the theme of the film is supposed to be that we all have the power inside of us to make a difference, and that's great. But by making it so that Asha doesn't need any help from Star, it takes something away from their relationship. No human is an island, and relationships, both in stories and real life, are often built on that fact. Just look at Ariel and Eric in the original Little Mermaid -- Ariel saves Eric from drowning and from Ursula zapping him with Triton's trident, and then Eric saves Ariel from Ursula by skewering her with the broken figurehead of a ship. Even in non-romantic examples, we have Judy and Nick having to help each other solve the case in Zootopia; Buzz and Woody helping each other get back to Andy in Toy Story; the Parr family and Frozone all fighting together against Syndrome's robot with their unique powers in The Incredibles; Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver working together to save themselves and everyone else at the end of Treasure Planet; even Anna helping Elsa learn how to control her magical abilities through an act of authentic, courageous, selfless love that only she can do in Frozen. These characters needing help and deep emotional connections with others is what creates a bond between them, helps the characters grow and change into stronger people, and makes us as an audience enjoy watching the two characters together. We become invested in both the two individual characters and the relationship forged between them. Because they all have their unique strengths and weaknesses, they supplement and complete each other. Even perfect paragon Superman in most DC properties isn't an island -- when he's in the Justice League, there are plenty of times where he needs help from Batman or other team members to save the day. Even Superman is a stronger character when he has people around him who can balance out his flaws.
If Asha never needs help, that runs the risk of the challenges she's facing seeming far less consequential, because no human can handle absolutely everything, all by themselves. Yes, perhaps in the finished film, Asha asks her friends to help her liberate the wishes (a task which ultimately fails, leaving Asha to confront Magnifico alone again and realize exactly what everyone has to do to defeat him on her own anyway)...but just in regards to Star and Asha's relationship -- which even the filmmakers have said is something like a "soulmate" relationship, though not in a romantic sense in the finished product -- these two can't have a meaningful connection if one of them is completely self-sufficient. This is also why quite a few Disney fans didn't like that the Little Mermaid remake changed Ursula's defeat to have it be Ariel who killed her, rather than Eric, because it hurt the "equal" dynamic between the main couple where they both helped and supported each other.
In short, "girl power" shouldn't have to mean never needing to rely on anyone else...and honestly, looking at this scene concept, we don't see Asha relying on Star too much! She's the brains of the outfit -- she's making plans; she's providing Star some much needed common sense; she's using Star's light as a distraction so they can get away...she even escapes Amaya at one point by sliding right under her horse! Asha in this storyboard is a bad-ass!
What we see in this sequence is these two characters having to help each other in order to succeed. And that would've been a great foundation on which to build more dramatic stakes and a relationship with actual pathos, whether romantic or not.

so i just finished watching nimona right
yes, I know it's been like a year since it came out. Sue me. I never had time to watch it.
But, uh. I can't stop thinking about how Nimona - even as an outsider - gets to watch things change. Gloreth doesn't fight for her when her parents call Nimona a monster and try to kill her, but Ballister yells and fights when they electrocute her and pin her down. The first time, she is attacked and almost killed by her own best friend, but the second, she finds something in the realms worth saving, and almost dies of her own accord.
she gets to see how the world evolves and grows and even though it's still not great - it's getting better. She's willing to sacrifice herself for a future where things are better. Yes, she thinks she won't actually die, and she changes into the form with maximum chance of survival, but it's not like she's actually tested this before.
the Nimona movie is special. the book was really good, but it was written in a time when a lot of marginalized communities, particularly the queer community, were hurting, and Nimona was meant to portray the complex struggles of that; how things can't just be fixed like in a fairytale, and the rot has to be torn out. It was a lot more cynical and was meant to inspire outrage at the injustice of a system built on corruption
however, I think the movie fits better for the current political and social climate. it's about how oftentimes, it's the system and not necessarily the people in it that cause harm, about what could be and how people can change, rather than tearing everything down. It gives people the chance to be better, instead of throwing everything out like in the book. I also think we need a happy ending free of guilt or sadness or questions - we have enough of that in our daily lives.
Anyway, I just finished it and absolutely cried. Ta, everyone.

lil nimona #gay dads drabble!! under the cut! only like 400 words but i was feelin inspired
“Hey—” “Have you seen the baby?” Ambrosius’ words come out rushed and jumbled. Ballister stares at him. “Have I seen the—She was with you!” “Well, yes.” Ballister waits for him to continue. Raises an eyebrow. “You lost the—“ “I lost the baby.” Ballister begins searching, walking in the direction of the living room. “Amb, we’ve talked about this. You need to stop losing the baby.” “Obviously!” Ballister can’t help but laugh a bit, somewhat in disbelief. Ambrosius always gets so stressed about the baby. It’s almost funny, considering the nature of their relationship. They love each other, of course, but neither of them would ever say it. That all being said, somehow, when it comes to parenting, Ambrosius is the good cop, and Ballister the bad. However, Ballister can confidently say he’s never lost the baby. “Nimona!” Ambrosius calls, hurrying after Ballister. He lifts up part of the couch. “Why would she be under the couch?” Ballister asks, laughing. “Our baby is not a normal baby.” Ambrosius lowers the couch. There’s a giggle from the kitchen. Ballister glances at Ambrosius to see he’s already taken off. He follows him. “Good Gloreth!” Ballister rounds the corner just in time as Ambrosius plucks a knife from Nimona’s hands. It seems to be covered in saliva. Was she … using it as a teething toy? “Nimona, that is not food,” Ambrosius scolds. Nimona gives Ambrosius possibly the most potent glare that Ballister has ever seen a baby give. He laughs a bit as Ambrosius wipes down the knife and sets it back in the block. “You know.” Ballister leans against the doorway, placing his hand on his hip. “I don’t think we’ve baby proofed enough.” “Oh,” Ambrosius deadpans. “You don’t say.” Ballister laughs some more as Ambrosius scoops Nimona up in his arms, even as she squawks and squirms, before crossing her little arms and making herself comfortable, a frown still on her lips. “I swear she likes you more,” Ambrosius grumbles. “She never runs away from you.” “Come on, now, sweetheart, you know she loves you.” Ballister pushes himself up off the wall and crosses the kitchen to them, kissing Nimona’s forehead as she shrieks with laughter before pecking Ambrosius on the lips. He cups his husband’s cheek, smiling at him. “You two just … butt heads.” “Buttheads!” Nimona shouts. They both freeze. Sigh. Laugh some. “Is her first word seriously butthead?” Ambrosius asks. Ballister shrugs. “Suppose so.” “Fitting.” “I’d say.” They exchange smiles and, Nimona still cradled in Ambrosius’ arms, make their way back to the living room.

In the Fairy au, why did the war start and what was the reason for it?
Also i love your artstyle and will we see more of Nimona's design?
First of all, Tysm<3
Here is the reason why the war started:
It's been a few thousand years since they lived in hatred, between humans and fairies but haven't gotten into war with each other (the last war was when the hatred started between the fairies and humans, reason? The fairies are magical beings and something abnormal, so they became associated with evil). The latest war (second) happened because The Director in this AU feels paranoid (yes this is inspired by the movie a bit) and told the whole kingdom that the fairies are planning to attack the kingdom first. She set out to attack the fairies first. That's how the war started. Currently, after the war, forest protectors made a barrier for the fairy village to protect the other fairies. Resource gatherers and forest protectors are the only fairies allowed outside the barrier / protective circle.
This explains why Ballister gets to meet Ambrosius from time to time. Nimona is a resource gatherer so she would (occasionally) followed along. Although, Nimona didn't really like Ambrosius, she was just there to keep an eye out.
I hope that answer some questions :)) (and yes, I am planning on making Nimona after I make some other AUs <33)

Good Omens - a scene with my OC (post s2)
*Crowley pulled off an arrow from Anamaria's leg* Crowley : Okay, most of people scream at that part. Anamaria : I'm not people. Crowley : *remembering that she's a human from Purgatory* Oh, right. But... does it hurt you at all ? Anamaria : It does, but... I've been through worse. (She was burnt alive, when she was 15)
And yes, this scene is inspired by a scene from Nimona.

Hey. Ninona <3
Okay?
YES. MY BLORBO. My JOY I get happy to see everytime I see my shark any time anywhere. Nimona has a traumatic backstory I just hope that Ballister and Ambrosius are able to be the ones to help Nimona recover just a little bit. A safe space is all Nimona needs. In the comic we don't know what happens after Nimona leaves of course, so we are only up to our imaginations to figure it out. I personally believe Nimona went and found someone or somewhere that lets Nimola be... Nimona!
When it comes to just the movie and comic, it will forever be my favourite two media, and ND stevenson has my entire thanks as well as the creator begind the movie Nimona ofc. They did wonderful work on the movie. I just ADORE the animation and expressions and the entire world they set with the movie, and the way they make everyone come to life, literally I think most of the background characters also pop to life and have their own lives with the way they are shown. The grandma we see? Even she got her own tiny part in the movie I feel makes her a bit important too. The children at the start? Yeah. Every side character that we only see for a couple minutes, I love them.
The writing of both media are just incredibly inspiring and I could honestly forever talk about my love for the movie and how it makes me so unbelievably happy. Nimona just breaks and heals my heart each time.
Also did you know I love Nimona???

Nimona’s little brother
Okay hear me out, I think it would be absolutely adorable if Nimona had just like a mini version of her who she was inspiring her chaotic destruction in.
Like she’d chase him around outside (before the events of the movie) whiles they’re both animals and just play and brawl (obviously she’d go easy on him, like how lions let their cubs win for confidence) then she’d carry him on her back to their little cave/tree house once he tired himself out.
He would totally have her bloodthirsty adorableness, kinda like when she was the little demon boy 😂
Nimona wouldn’t introduce him to Ballister immediately, she’s probably drop little hints after a while and then introduce him around the shark dance time before Ballister went for nachos.
Like :
*Ballister walks in*
Nimona : *on couch* oh yeah btw, no biggie but this is Raphael.
Ballister : I’m sorry? Who?!
Nimona : *unimpressed* my brother?
Ballister : * so done with asking anymore so offers to shake the kids hand*
Nimona : *nonchalant* I wouldn’t do that, Rapha likes to bite
*little shark teeth snap at Ballisters hand*
Nimona : *ruffles Raph’s hair* who’s a good Raphie? You are! Yes you are! (she is not against treating him like a puppy & the kid loves it)
Like Nimona wanted to get Ballister comfortable with her to see if he could understand, if he could change, so that she could see if times were different now so that her little brother didn’t have to grow up scared like she did.
Maybe when Gloreth’s people attacked her she ran away and they chased her, but she was scared they’d find Rapha so she attacked them? And that adds to her boatloads of trauma? The guilt of hurting and lashing out conflicting with her desire to protect her little brother?
The ending would obviously have to be different ? Maybe Rapha got scared when Nimona became so depressed and angry, but he turned into his smoky black thing before she did because he was little and had less self control, he was just so hurt at how his big sister kept getting treated by people that his pain and anger took him over.
He crashed into the city and goes for Gloreth’s statue because he may have been young but he remembered what happened (their ppl have amazing memories? Maybe just he does?) so he wanted to tear it down because he couldn’t do anything else for her.
But of course he gets attacked by the guard and becomes far more scared and frantic and distressed, maybe he goes down or passes out and Nimona thinks he’s dead?
So of course she rages and becomes all smoky, but then the anger just becomes deep deep sorrow because she feels like she has nothing left anymore so she does the sword thing but Ballister stops her and shows her that Rapha is still alive. The little guy does that thing kids do when they want to be picked up so he stretches his arms out to her whiles crying for her, she collapses into Ballisters arms, she then had to save everyone so she leave Rapha with Ballister and does her Phoenix thing….something something something we win. 😁
Idk it was just an idea I had while watching it? Like how different would it be?
Anyway hope you enjoyed♥️

that art style post is so real. been seeing nimona everywhere and yes i'm sure it's a great movie if that's ur cup of tea but the art style seems so same-y and i just cannot take it seriously
My post wasn't specifically about N*mona but it def was inspired by it. It was more about a trend I see too often of people drawing female characters that, in canon, have distinct facial features, and just completely ignoring and drawing them in that style. 'She Does Not Fucking Look Like This' syndrome bugs me almost as much as 'He Would not Fucking Say This' syndrome. Or well, I guess they could be grouped into one if I think about it. People ignoring a character's canon characteristics, whether those be physical or personality-related, for the sake of being able to shove said character into pre-made molds to the point of the character being almost unrecognizable and having them act and look Just The Way the person wants to (note: this is not criticism torwards hcs this is something else)
I see this especially often with fanart of live action media. Commonly in Animation many female characters already look like this (which leads back to the N*mona thing. I'm not saying the movie is bad, I haven't seen it and have honestly only heard positive things about it, but in general this is very much lazy character design), so people drawing them like this isn't really an issue most often (not always though). In live action media however, the characters are played by Real People and most real people Do Not Look Like That, and that's something many fanartists don't seem to notice or choose to ignore

Random thoughts and ramblings about the amazing film Nimona! Warning this is a huge tangent and does talk about spoilers for the movie and a bit of spoilers about the graphic novel (that I haven't read since my copy hasn't arrived yet) also I've tried to write this post like 3 times but it keeps breaking so oof.
Kudos to the creator ND Stevenson who I swear is a massive source of creativinies that I would absorb like a sponge if I had the energy to because everything they're apart of is something I feel like I'd adore if if I took the plunge. Also he identifies as enby transmasc (which, I am too, and I didn't realize how huge of a blow it was to realize that people like me exist). I really ought to look into She-ra and their other works at some point. Anyway, anyway, anyway - this is about Nimona!
Tumblr media
I love that this obviously queer movie decided to be release during the later stage of June aka "Pride Month" because I feel like it gives people the chance to watch it with fresh eyes during July, which is Disabled Pride Month (I'm Australian so it isn't really a thing here as far as im aware sadly) which Ballister is such a fantastic and amazing character who is gay and disabled.
He is never portrayed as weak or lesser for his disability, I imagine for people that it'll actually be easy to forget that he is disabled as an amputee with how capable he's written. I feel like it might just go over peoples heads at some point because you never get to see stuff written so well unless if its poking you with it every few episodes or its extremely obvious at a glance. But with Ballister it 'just is who he is' and it moves on to focus on its plot like it has from the beginning.
And its never used as a plot set back or change the storybeat or anything of that sort of matter. Which is amazing. However it isn't just ignored either! He has a moment of weakness when he sees Ambroius again. He hesitates, he withdraws from reach out to him while looking at his arm (Oh, Nemesis!). It is still fresh and new and he's trying to handle it (you're doing great sweetie).
I'm not physically disabled (I do have a weak knee however) but a mentally disabled and experience fatigue constantly and I'm sure I'd have chronic pains if I didn't have a high pain tolerance. So while this sort of character isn't someone I can directly relate to it is someone I can connect with (Although I don't believe you need to be the same as something in order to connect/relate to it).
However I am at home a lot and I don't get exposed much to other people and that includes a lot of people with other cultures, beliefs, body types and disabilities. So being able to see people different than me on the screen is always awesome, and being able to connect with them is too. Which the Queen, Nimona and Ballister is fantastic for everyone and hopefully the Director will give the other sort of audience of this movie a time to think back and work through things.
But I haven't seen many disabled people in media, because I don't really have the energy to engage with much content for long. So I have a limited selection of characters who seem like fantastic representation - because while yes Toph from Avatar the Last Airbender is fantastic she has literal superpowers compared to the every day person so I love and praise how she's handled because everything she does is fantastic-
Seeing Ballister's strong and dedicated personality which still has that life to it made me instantly feel for him along side Hiccup from How to Train your Dragon (And before you ask - no, AstridSpeckles is not due to HTTYD, its inspired from Zelda actually!) And I just love how it was all written and displayed. In HTTYD it was to connect Toothless and Hiccup together in a beautiful narrative. Here they used his arm to make a beautiful narrative too - he uses it, constantly.
He fixes his arm with just one hand which is insane because its also his non dominant hand which wow thats amazing. And he doesn't shy away from using his arm for anything, he still touches people with it, still wields things with as much confidence as ever to do so. He reaches out to Nimona with it too in that scene. Also Ambroius reaches out to hold his hand in that scene too! So tenderly and without hesitation! Which if it was another case with other characters I reckon I'd be a little upset but you see how much they love eachother and how gentle and tactile and soft they are so it is just so beautiful to see here...
Tumblr media
Also I don't really know where else to put this but since im on a tangent about Ballister ima just say it here. He is such a fantastic knight! He knew the moment his sword was handed to him that it was off. He knew it didnt feel right, the weight was wrong? Or it just felt off? He knows his sword. He knows his morals. He knows what he has to do to make things right. He never betrayed himself ever!
Also the eye sparkles change. At the start their diamonds, but Ballister's turns into squares as he gets more exposed to different views where Ambroius turns into a triangle as his views are being pulled (the director whispering in his hear, his own heart, and his love for Ballister).
Also he too is a fantastic knight! His life falling apart? Never lashes out. Never hurts those around him (Okay, cutting off an arm isn't a love language.) So yes that is a case where he did hurt someone but that is addressed in its own ways.
But he never hurts or lashes out at the people he's protecting. He could easily just take it out on them, stop caring, fall into a pit of despair at his own problems. But you actively see him dealing with this own issues and then instantly being a knight the next scene and he doesn't falter or fall.
He is also so strong and I love that he had these moments, would of liked some more though but he isn't a main character like Nimona and Ballister so I understand why he didn't.
Also back to Ballister for a moment because the moment he heard Nimona's not really handling the things she's carrying, that she was able to tell him about her most vulnerable, scary and intrusive thoughts after knowing him for so little, that his thoughts in an instant was to get her the hell out of there and go with her.
He would try to work things out with Ambroius I believe, but he saw the hurt of Nimona who he hasn't known that long over the love of his life and said this is my priority. That would be so hard for anyone to do, for example a parent knowing their child is queer and the other parent not accepting them - there are cases where the parents stay together because its too hard for them not too, and lose the kid or kick the kid out.
The fact Ballister in a heartbeat acted accordingly to keep this new precious person in his life to abandon (like they did to him) without hesitation is absolutely insane and I love it so much. Also that it wasn't a move out of malice or defiance. It could of easily of been written differently that they need to protect her and they have to leave right now. But no. He took action (he always takes actions!) and while he lingered on Ambroius, it wasnt hesitation. It wasn't to hurt Ambroius either. He put Nimona being at risk first.
Tumblr media
So I've actually been aware of Nimona for a few years now. I've heard about its ups and downs and its eventually cancel to its amazing revival! But I was watching it as a passive observer, never interacting with it because I know I hyper-fixate, I didn't want too get invested and attached and because off the rollercoaster of it not coming to the big screen while being in the fandom at that time (im sorry you are all so much stronger than I am haha!)
However, it is alive and amazing! And I'm finally here in the fandom - I've finally watched it - I've finally decided to order the graphic novel like I planned to back during its first movie announcement so I can quote "Enjoy the movie and then read the book since the books are always better", so I can love both as much as I can, yknow?
From what I've discovered reading online here and there so far (and its likely that this is wrong so take this with a grain of salt since I haven't gotten my graphic novel yet) that apparently that the movie is leaps and bounds improved compared to the graphic novel (Note: Not better, improved.)
Improved origin stories, improved personalities, improved characterizations. So much of the voice actors provide life and inspiration to these characters bringing them to a level that the graphic novels didn't have the resource to do.
I also love how people also aren't going crazy (negatively) about the change of races to the characters - im so used to seeing discourse about this sort of thing but its so accepted here that it is so refreshing to see.
The graphic novel has a larger and looser timeline and I believe a darker story and not as much as a happy ending compared to the movie. I can't wait to read the graphic novel though it looks very interesting!
But the ending of the movie implies such a happier ending for everyone, since apparently I've seen that in the graphic novel Nimona visits Ballister while being shapeshifted as a nurse while he is in hospital and he caught on too late after she says goodbye and he never sees her again and is constantly reminded of her when she sees people with her hair colour and that is so bittersweet!
The fact we get her coming to him at the end with him going HOLY SHIT is because it is saying here that it doesn't end with that note. They are together still. And I really hope something more comes out after this because I need to see a bit more to know what is happening there.
I had written a lot more here but my post keeps breaking and doing ctrl+z is making me lose entire paragraphs and gifs I put in as text breakers so I'm gonna leave this here or maybe do another post when I end up reading the graphic novel, who knows. But yes. I love Nimona :D

things my mother said when I watched nimona with her
-weird look at the beginning for the newscast
-"is that the gay couple?" after ambrosius said he loves ballister

Do you have book recs? Especially queer book recs, both fiction and nonfiction. Thank you!
Why yes I do friend! A whole list under the cut because I added descriptions and it’s rather long, but also if you’d rather: here is my queer book list on goodreads (some of the books I haven’t read yet but the ones I have read have longer reviews from me).
Fiction:
All For the Game (aka The Foxhole Court three book series) by Nora Sakavic - fake sport, total drama university, demisexual character, gay characters, slow burn, lots of violence unfortunately, dysfunctional found family
The Raven Cycle (four book series) by Maggie Stiefvater - a magical game of hide and seek with an ancient buried king, gay and bi characters, found family filled with more love than you thought possible
Dress Codes for Small Towns by Court Stevens - queer characters, found family of somewhat delinquent friends (but they’re good Christian delinquents), finding yourself and exploring your sexuality under the watchful eye of religious people
Beauty Queens by Libba Bray (I recommend the audiobook) - beauty queens crash and trapped on a desert island what could go wrong, gay and trans characters, a lot actually goes wrong but a lot goes right
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz - I’ve reread this book so many times I’ve lost count. Slow burn. Boys falling in love. Boys who will do anything for each other. Written in the most loving way I’ve ever seen.
Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero - teen detective club all grown up and still traumatized by the eldritch horrors they saw in their youth, Scooby type gang and the gals are queer
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee - this book has so much I don’t even know how to describe it, but it’s delightful and all the characters are so good, slow burn, too many wonderful tropes to count, at one point there’s a pirate ship
They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera - ahaha this one hurts. The world building is phenomenal though and so are the boys and their love.
It’s Not Like It’s a Secret by Misa Suguira - delightful wlw story of a queer girl, her family, and how she grows up with secrets
George by Alex Gino - a kid’s book about a trans kid, very sweet and informative, audiobook read by Jamie Clayton
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli - one of the best coming of age/coming out stories Ive read, inspired the movie Love Simon
More Than This by Patrick Ness - existential crisis of a book, queer main, all around beautiful story
If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo - trans main, acceptance, growing, and dating
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan - two characters of the same name, several gay characters, a delightful journey of finding friendship and oneself
The Inexplicable Logic of My Life by Benjamin Alire Sáenz - father of main is gay, from the author of Aristotle and Dante, beautiful tale of a young boy coming of age, figuring out his identity with his past and his present and his future
Comic/Graphic Novel:
The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal: Omnibus by E.K. Weaver - this sits on my shelf and it is HUGE, read it first as a webcomic so if you can’t find it in stores it’s online, long ass road trip that melts my heart every time
Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson (and more) - the best camp experience you will ever have
Take Me with You by Andrea Gibson - beautifully queer poetry
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson - everyone is queer, magical and misunderstood, bad guys need assistants too, sometimes the good people aren’t the best people
Non-Fiction:
Revolutionary by Alex Myers - a historical retelling of Deborah Samson/Robert Shurtliff from a trans perspective
Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More by Janet Mock - autobiographical, trans, sex work, sex positivity
Buffering: Unshared Tales of a Life Fully Loaded by Hannah Hart - autobiographical, positivity in the face of anything, family with mental illness, difficult relationship with parent
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic (also graphic novel but it’s autobiographical) by Alison Bechdel - also a broadway musical, broken family, coming of age
Sex Variant Woman: The Life of Jeannette Howard Foster by Joanne E. Passet - the life story of a lesbian librarian/teacher who needs more credit, very long and detailed but worth it, has a lot to teach you about the queer history in general
Not Explicitly Queer but Can Be Read as Queer:
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng - one of the main characters is ace and I will fight for that
Romeo and/or Juliet: A Chooseable-Path Adventure by Ryan North - there’s an ace joke and plenty of queer subtext

Writer Notes: The Wicked + the Divine 32
Tumblr media
Spoilers, obv.
While I've done this in my Tumblr asks, I forget if I've put this in the actual notes or not. I would presume I haven't, because if I'd put the following caveat in the Writer’s Notes and I'm still being asked when the Writer Notes are coming when they're later than usual by people who presumably read the Writer Notes it would be more than a little rude.
(I write the following, and then bounce back here to put a caveat on my caveat. Don't worry if you've done the following. It's not the end of the world, it's really only a minor annoyance in the larger scale of things, and you didn't know.)
I've done Writer Notes for every single issue of WicDiv. That's 34 (with the Specials), including this one. They appear before the next issue drops. I've gone as late as the day before the issue is released. I don't believe I've ever gone any later. That's how it's always happened.
“Before the next issue.” That is when to expect my Writer Notes. It is not “late” until the next issue drops.
I write them as soon as I have time. If I haven't done it earlier in the month, you may safely assume that I've got other commitments that have to be prioritised above writing something which is, in a very real way, not part of my job.
If you're worried whether you've missed them, the Writer Notes are always tagged on my tumblr. You can click this link and see if they're there or not. There is no need to ask me.
I do not appreciate anyone asking where they are and when I'm going to do it. Please, don't do it. It stresses me out, both in the frustration at the entitlement in believing I should be writing it instead of many of the other things I should be doing, and in the simultaneous and entirely contradictory response of I SHOULD BE DOING THEM WHY THE HELL AM I NOT DOING THEM I AM LETTING EVERYONE DOWN!!!!
There is only so much a creative can give.
Er... and that appears to have segued into this issue's theme, hasn’t it?
Jamie/Matt's Cover
We finally reach full bleed on the Imperial Phase covers. By this point, I suspect pretty much everyone has seen what we're doing with the covers, and the implicit question of “how can you follow something that's doing this to full bleed”.
This is one of my favourite WicDiv covers. Jamie and Matt have excelled themselves here. The nonchalance of Dionysus, a return of the Acid House badge and so on. It's completely different to all the other gods – as is the nature of Dio – but is also the most visually magnificent. I love this.
Noelle Stephenson
Is a force of nature, and doesn't really need me hailing her here. Suffice to say, BUY NIMONA IF YOU HAVEN'T. She jumped at Baal/Minerva, and we just sat and let her do her thing. Clearly with this issue's content it rubs up unusually.
Walking Dead Cover
Homaging their issue 150 cover. We did it with 32, which makes it kinda funny. Persephone in her issue 22 costume.
IFC
With the double-length of Imperial Phase, we're very much reaching the recap page's breaking point in terms of working out what information to include. I smile that I managed to fit “He is such a shit” in there though.
Page 1
Return to the three panel of the start of last time. Immobility remains the point. I had a slightly more writer-y line for Sakhmet in the second panel, but I generally find it's best to strip her back to Just The Facts. There's no need to fence with Sakhmet.
Jamie's addition of a bloody-handed yawn is a perfect way to add a secondary reveal to the scene.
Reading people's commentary. I find it interesting that people seem to have Persephone's expression in the last panel to be bored. It reads pretty clearly as a wince to me. It's a very small response – which is, of course, the point – but it's definitely not ambivalent. One of the things in comics is how much for characters to verbalise, and how much you can just leave to the art. This is not a thing which has any one solution.
Pages 2-4
There's a craft thing here of note – we only explicitly introduce the idea that there is a sexual consent issue at this point in the Woden scene. We don't think leaving that sort of threat across a month is either ethical or useful. In a serialised narrative, we try to weigh these things up.
(It's still relatively quiet. There's twelve Valkyries. The thirteenth Asian girl is Cassandra.)
The page transition of Dionysus kicking in is the sort of thing I love as a storyteller. Repeats with a tiny difference.
The dialogue was moved a little after drawing, so as to leave the final panel on page 3 silent. Jamie's expression was perfect and didn't need disruption – more so when Matt pops the reds.
The glo-stick nunchaku first appeared in Rising Action, and make a return here. They were inspired by Christian Ward and Catherine Rooney's wedding, when they distributed a bunch of glo-sticks during the 90s rave set the DJ dropped. I was spinning them around, and it got me thinking.
Page 4 is obviously the key image, capturing Dio's hamartia in the same way as Amaterasu's final panel in 31 captures her. I get upset to even think of this panel. Futile acts of bravery when all hope is lost is something which almost always makes me cry.
Anyway – just wonderful. Jamie and Matt nail it. The oppressiveness of the mass of green, the crowd against Dio, the soar of his body. Perfect. Nice work.
Page 5
The Red Shoes being the Hans Christian Andersen story about a girl who gets a pair of ballet shoes and can't stop dancing. It doesn't end well for her either.
It's been used all over culture – Kate Bush is an obvious one, but I tend to think of the 1948 movie.
Pages 6-7
We basically keep the rhythm of the last issue going. As in, hard cuts between multiple scenes when the drama is highest. I'll be interested to see how this works in the trade – page 1's refocusing of the action here is the stepping stone back to this location, but it's quite the jump.
Anyway – Sakhmet and Persephone's final conversation. I needed something like this.
Standard-y me structure of a two-page scene with the first row of the first page merged as is the last row of the second page.
Lots of great expression work here, especially in how tight Jamie is choosing to cut things. It's not just as simple as a slow zoom to the character's features, but there is a gradual increase. I like how Sakhmet starts in a neutral position... and then when she laughs at the first answer, she gets a little further away... and when she gets the response to the second question, she's very close. That also means we also get a great pull away.
Expressions again. Sakhmet's three close-ups are my everything, in how much she's saying – the downcast eyes in the third! Especially compared to the deadness of Persephone.
“I think we only get to hurt ourselves and maybe people who want to be hurt” is just :(
Pages 8-11
Reprising of issue 8, which was Dio at his most iconic. These four pages “count” as two pages in terms of page budget, in that only 4 panels are drawn on each page. That we spread it out over a larger space means it's much more emotionally impactful.
My brain is failing, but I believe Dio and Woden are the only two characters other than Laura who've ever had internal dialogue captions. That strikes me as interesting.
Cutting the dialogue short enough to make it vaguely keep to the beat was obviously important. It ticks along, relentlessly.
Matt's colouring here is, like Dio's first one, a story in and of itself – the fading colour as Dio is dragged down in the first page, the glitch on page 10, the third panel of page 11.
The “One more time” came to me as writing it, and I was genuinely horrified at myself. I can make any cultural allusion depressing. It's a gift. While at this year's Thought Bubble dancefloor, this issue was at the printers. Various friends had read it, and were there. When I dropped ‘One More Time’, I glanced at them, and thought about the unique awfulness of WicDiv, in that they knew and no one else did.
Pages 12-13
I wish I had a page or two more in the budget here. There's a couple of beats I wish I'd been able to linger on.
The drop of Dio in the first panel brought to mind the fall of 455 Lucifer.
Woden's line is harsh as fuck here, but also not entirely wrong. As we see, Cass was unaffected by Woden's power. He didn't need to do anything.
The last panel on page 12 originally had much more dialogue, and it was bullshit. I moved that to the next panel, and keep it sharper. WicDiv isn't a comic where people can shout speeches as they do stuff.
I'M A FUCKING CRITIC is much better anyway. Jamie and Matt did great stuff with the multiple levels.
“One More” makes me feel bitter too. Brunhilde's excitement is also telling. More anon on this, I suspect.
More exposition than I'd like in the last panel with Cass, but I suspect we lose you if you don't know why she's phoning Persephone.
Page 14
Yes, Persephone hasn't changed her ringtone.
We don't have space to go far into the fight here, but we have to give the two big beats. Baal's burst of power, and the specifics of the terrible speed of Sakhmet. The colour choices are what scream to me here. Each of those two central panels are so much about the individual god who is dominating them. There’s just such direct choices here.
We start on the phone, and end on Minerva's owl, to try and get a transition to...
Page 15
...Minerva. Clearly for where the story goes, we have to see Minerva in the nearby area. We wanted to show the emotional journey towards going there – that's a great conflicted last panel by Jamie. We discussed what method to use in terms of communication – specifically, we needed Minerva to have ‘READ’ notes on her phone so she knows Morrigan has seen the messages and is ignoring them. Which sets up Minerva to make her decision.
After the colours of the previous page, the low light of this one is also really striking.
Pages 16-17
The fight scenes in the Underground were all written Marvel Method, with more ideas than would fit in the space. As such, it was a question of choosing where to edit, both in terms of Jamie's choices on the page and my choices at lettering. There was certainly more possible lettering in the script... but, as I say above, I don't like fight scenes to talk too much. When this is all happening as quickly as it is, it seems to undercut it.
Boiling the exchange to the “Predator or Prey” call back seemed to be the right call to make. Boil it down.
(The other options were a reprise of Persephone's “We only get to hurt ourselves and people who want to be hurt” in the last two panels, which I felt would be too much. I'd hope it would be subtextual in it anyway.)
Page 18
We leaned into implication here – choosing the moments. The slump of the hands in the second panel is the key one for me. That's just horrible, as is Persephone's distress in the third one.
Pages 19-21
Yeah, this scene is hard, with the characters' frustrations and anger at themselves crossing back and forth. It's telling that we go to eight panel grid structure for the first two pages, which is my standard one for this kind of more emotionally grounded scene.
Worth noting the other Norns aren't there. I suspect Cass hasn't been exactly gentle with them either. Still – Cass echoes a significant proportion of the readership regarding Persephone, I suspect.
Explicitly closing off the “No Person” line from back in Imperial Phase.
Eventually Persephone reaches a point and pushes back. For both of them, it's not the lies that hurt. It's the truths. And... yeah, that argument is totally not over.
I kind of wish I had the machine go BLEEP! Rather than BEEP!
Pages 22-24
Yes, it is very much our beeping device on the mantelpiece.
Odd hitting the last page, in that it's one of the end-of-episode beats I've known seemingly forever. It is a particularly frustrating one, clearly.
We did have a bunch of chat over exactly what should that final line be. It was as mild as “Oh my” at one point, but I like the last one.
Beep Test being a fitness thing.
And that's it. A few more weeks and issue 33, the end of Imperial Phase and moving onto Year Four of the book. Just re-reading all of WicDiv so far in preparation for scripting of that year, and it's a strange thing to look at how far we've come. If you have never done a WicDiv re-read, I suspect this is a perfect time to do one.
Thanks for reading.
