i realize a lot of people tend to over-characterize wesker and completely disregard some of his main personality traits. (long post that’s not rlly organized read at ur own risk lol)
i’ll often see videos/edits about him and a lot of people will say something along the lines of
“he’d instantly kill me” (read this on a thirst post LMAO)
“he’d threaten to kill me if i ever spoke to him”
“wesker would kill all of us if he found out we were simping for him”
and that always really confused me? knowing wesker’s character i feel like people would know he doesn’t kill people unless he really has to. there are few moments where he does kill and they’re mainly because he has to/has real reason behind it.
in reality, he likely wouldn’t kill you instantly, especially if you simply weren’t a threat. who cares if you simp for him? he sure doesn’t. even if you were a threat, he’d send out other people to take care of you first and if he had a confrontation with you he surely wouldn’t take you seriously (i highly doubt y’all mfs know how to fight i’m sorry 😭)
you wanna know why wesker fought chris in the first place? he thought it was amusing and didn’t even take it seriously. the whole time he just messed around, clearly not trying to kill him. he literally tells chris he has 7 minutes to fuck with him like he’s got a strict schedule. dude was not taking any of that seriously. he took a phone call because chris and sheva were so irrelevant to him. they were considered ‘threats’ but clearly not enough to him for him to really care. he has enough confidence in his own abilities to know he could take care of something if they really posed a threat to him.
it’s actually surprising how people make out wesker to be this ruthless angry killer who doesn’t put up with anything when in reality he’s just a goofy little comic book villain who has the zoomies half the time.
we have visual proof of a wesker simp trying to fuck him (excella) and him simply using them before killing them. keep in mind he put up with her for 5~ whole years.
moral of the story, no he wouldn’t threaten you or actually kill you the moment you spoke a word to him. that’s seriously out of character for him and i’m not sure why after seeing him in so many games that people will automatically assume that he’d do that. he’s capable of fighting but clearly prefers to use his charm.

returning fire with multiples of 5 for my babies marc and sahar >:))
Did you think I forgot or gave up Macy? Cause I didn’t and I have all of them answered for you. Please enjoy some of them.
Tumblr media
5. - Nicknames? Pet names? Any in-jokes?
Sahar will call him Moony, (Crazy) Moon Man, Marky, Edge Lord, and anything else that sounds like an insult in a very affectionate manner. Marc will throw back and call her Shut In, Priestess, Dawn, Ghost Whisperer, and Soothesayer. Many of their in-jokes revolve around their own struggles of their lives and brains and sort of being on the opposite sides for a hot minute. One that’s on the sweeter side though is that when its dusk he’ll turn to her (or anyone really) and say it’s her time of day this is when she’s the most her she’ll ever be. It relates to the meaning of her name and funny because well dusk is their dawn given the schedule they keep.
10. - Who drives? Cooks? Does the handiwork? Cleans? Pays the bills? Handles the public?
Neither drive as they live in New York why would you? Marc had a driver once upon a time, however Jake drives and is the only one to do so. Cooking? Well, more Sahar but she isn’t particularly fond of having to do so. Handiwork? Soldier does it. Cleans? Both. Pays bills? Steven/Marc. Steven makes the cash and Marc just makes sure it’s on time. Handles the public? They live on a vampire schedule. There is no public. Do not ever perceive them. If you did then it’s Sahar or Steven.
15. - How adventurous are they?
In general? Honestly they want to just keep to themselves. Please no more world ending, world endangering, laws that persecute them, like just let them have some peace for a little bit and become hermits together.
Sexually? Well they could be if I didn’t separate them before they really had a chance to see how far they’d go. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
20. - What does their home look like? Their room?
Sahar’s apartment always stays a bit simplistic, with furniture you can tell was bought used and for cheap, but the feel of the place gets warmer as the two spend more time together. Pictures are hung and placed, a few might blooming plants are placed, there’s more than one set of dishes, and the (blackout) curtains have some color and pattern go them.
25. - How much time do they spend together? Do they share their feelings, or hold things in?
At first for these two its just a few days a week for a few minutes, then its almost every day, until there’s a little hang up where Marc tries (and fails) to keep away after her attack, but once it seems like that’s not happening they spend every day together. Its almost as if they’re living together given how much Marc stays the night at Sahar’s place. Once she joins the Midnight Mission they really spend every day with the other.
Now as for feelings....These two kept many of them back for a long time. It takes Sahar almost dying for him to even admit that he can’t stay away from her. Sahar never really says it herself either until that moment but she’s more of someone that will show rather than tell. Once they both establish that they’re together in some capacity the feelings come out easier but mostly when they’re alone, though its obvious they love each other when together and you see them in group dynamics.
30. - Could they manage a long distance relationship?
Yes and no. Yes because they can communicate very easily, but no because they worry about the other on a daily basis. They’re vigilantes and with that comes a higher risk of losing the other. And don’t even bring up the whole different universe thing!
35. - Do they bring out the best in each other, or the worst? Do they have a fatal flaw?
I think its a little more complicated than that. These two neither bring out the worst or the best but simply bring them more life. They both are coming to a better place that isn’t because of the other solely, but simply having found someone else opened up doors that neither would have really had if they hadn’t come across one another again. These two bring an understanding of the other that not everyone meets or cares to find out about. Its hard to explain but this isn’t something that’s black and white as if I was to answer for another couple.
40. - Any special memories? Do they have a special place they like to go to?
Marc and Sahar hold onto the memory of when they first admitted some feelings for the other despite the circumstances that lead them to that moment. Sahar will always hold onto when he first fully took off his mask for her. Marc’s is when she admitted to having her hallucinations on the rooftop after she almost went too far. One memory though that Steven holds onto as special was a dance they shared briefly at some company Christmas party before life hit them both. They had both laughed at the irony of two people who didn’t celebrate the holiday to be at such a heavy Christmas themed event.
45. - Any special dreams or goals they have as a couple? Any heartbreaks? Regrets?
For both of them their biggest regret was not saying how they felt before she was sent to another place he could never hope to find.

After the tree house got gonked up, they moved movie nights to Marceline's place. Marceline complained halfheartedly but gave in easily.
It was nice, she supposed. Having people over felt comfortable, which was probably because most if not all the people she invited were her friends. But even the ones she wasn't particularly fond of, she got along well with during them.
She was able to just hang out with them, they didn't have to do anything cool or interesting. They could just shove in a movie and insert an appropriate amount of commentary during it. And then afterwards, if it was too late into the evening they could just crash there.
Waking up to not just Bonnibel, but also so many of her friends sprawled around her house makes her heart clench and she wouldn't trade this for anything.
Well. There was one movie night that she would remember for all time.
It wasn't really a special night or anything. It was around their sixth or seventh movie night at her place, so they've already gotten into a routine.
Finn and BMO were sprawled on the floor infront of the TV. Lady was curled up not too far from him, with Jake laying comfortably on her. Simon was seated on one end of the couch, paying much more attention than the movie demanded. She and Bon were cuddled up on the other end, a blanket wrapped securely around them.
If you had asked her, she wouldn't have honestly known what the movie was. She was already halfway asleep on Bonnibel's chest and she'd been tuning out the noise for hours.
She was about to tip over into unconsciousness when Bonnibel nudged her.
"Hey. Hey you awake?"
"Are you awake? I have a question."
She grumbled.
Marceline burried her head into Bonnibel's neck and grumbled even more. "You can file your question in the morning, business hours have closed."
"You're nocturnal, your business hours are at night."
"I don't know if you've noticed, but I've been staying up in the morning and sleeping at night so I could hang out with you. So, once again, tomorrow."
There's a pause then Bonnibel pulled her closer.
After a moment Bonnibel breathed "I love you so much," into her hair. She could hear the gigantic goofy smile in her voice.
"I love you too, dorkus. Now, shh sleep time."
Marceline thought that was that but Bonnibel just nudged her again. More insistent this time.
"No, no. I really wanna ask you this now so please stay awake enough to answer."
Bonnibel didn't sound desperate. Nor did she sound distressed. She just sounded... giddy? Glob she wanted to sleep, but fine. She might as well indulge her girlfriend.
She nips at Bonnibel's neck lightly and caused the other woman to laugh lightly. "Fine, but you've got a few minutes."
She tried to lean away and make sure Bonnibel could see her face. It didn't sound like a bad thing, but Bonnibel always found it easier to ask her things if she could see her face.
Except for now apparently, because Bonnibel tightened her hold on her and made a little noise in the back of her throat.
Worrying.
"Okay so, this probably isn't the right place or time to ask. You're half asleep and there are other people. I mean, they're our friends but I figured this should be private," she pauses to take in a breath.
She's rambling. Not the best of signs. She tried to look at Bonnibel again but was stopped by a shake of her head.
"No, let me- let me finish. Okay, well. I had a speech written down a long time ago and I memorized it down to the punctuation so I could recite it anytime but apparently that is harder in practice. I could tell it to you later when I don't feel like a mess, cause I can't take it back now so here I go? I mean you'll laugh and stuff but-"
She cuts off with a gentle squeeze to the hip and a soft kiss to the jaw. Bonnibel pauses for a moment. Marceline gently peels herself away from her neck and looks at her.
Whatever she was looking for, she didn't expect to see how soft and open she was. There was some movement, Bonnibel took one of her hands and slipped something in it.
"I dont know why I decided to do this now," she mumbles. "But I did, and I doubt I'll ever regret this. So Marceline," she nodded at her hand as a silent request to see what it was she was given.
Cautiously, she opened up her hand and peered at the ring she was given. Marceline just blinked at it.
"Will you marry me?"
Marceline was quiet for a few seconds, turning the ring around her fingers.
She heaves a heavy sigh and untangles herself from Bonnibel. She leans away, far enough that she was leaning onto Simon's side.
Panic and confusion fills Bonnibel's eyes, along with a generous helping of hurt. She waves her hand and reaches for something in her pocket.
She pulls out her own ring and offers it to her.
Bonnibel's eyes go wide.
"She beat me to it, Jake. She beat me to it." She sighs, shaking her head.
Jake snickers. "A whooping twelve hours too." Lady laughs quietly. "Told you, Pbubs would beat her to it bro."
Finn grunts and she could see him waving his hand from the corner of her eye. "Not that I was listenig, but Peebs didn't plan to do it tonight. So I don't count that."
"Psh, you just don't wanna admit defeat."
"Nah, just statin' facts. Back me up on this Simon."
Simon pats her head, a fatherly gesture he's been doing these days. "I'm just glad they've done it."
"Am I too assume," Bonnibel mutters, voice slightly hoarse and still staring at the ring. "That you have something planned for me in twelve hours?"
"Not anymore, since you ruined it." Marceline pouted. She heaved herself back into Bonnibel's space. She purred deep in her chest and kissed her cheek. "It was gonna be special and stuff but eh I guess we can just go on a date." She gently grasped her hand and slipped the ring on. "The answer, by the way, is yes. And if you proposing to me is any indication, I guess your answer is a yes too."
Bonnibel laughs, a little watery and strangled but so filled with happiness. She mimicked Marceline, and slipped the ring onto her finger- albeit with slightly more shaking. "Was there any doubt?"
"No, but if I wasn't sure of it before I sure as hell am now." She pulled her fiancée -wow, that's gonna take some getting used to. It was amazing and it wasn't really butterflies in her stomach but more like a whole calamity- closer and kissed her gently. "So you mentioned a speech?"
"I am not telling you unless you do your plan."
"But you already said yes," Marceline whined. "And you beat me to it. I planned that for so long and you just up and ruin it. Rude."
"Then I revoke my answer."
Jake and Finn snort at this.
"It won't be the same, I'll just take you on a really nice date."
"But-"
"Shh!"
They start slightly and turn to BMO sternly looking at them. "I am watching the movie! Please be quiet!"
Finn pats BMO and shoots the pair a smile.
A moment passes and Bonnibel presses herself closer to Marceline. "Tomorrow, I'll convince you at some point and I look forward to it."
Marceline hums, smiling into her hair. "Yeah yeah, whatever dork."

Ranked: Hannah Montana — Mamaw vs. Dolly
Tumblr media
So this seemed like a fun one for me to do!  These are two of the most iconic recurring guest stars, so naturally I had to pit them against each other (or, well, pit their episodes against each other).  This competition isn’t particularly serious, but it is a nice excuse for me to talk about some of my favorite episodes on the show.  Like before, I’m going in reverse-order of how much I liked them, or Worst->Best, so I can save the best for last.
“B-B-B-Bad to the Chrome” (Season Three)
Tumblr media
It’s a testament to how awesome Vicki Lawrence is that even in the “worst” episode she’s in, she still brings it and is in many ways the strongest part of it.  This one loses out mainly on writing, and me fucking hating the subplot.  I’m sorry.  “You forgot some really arbitrary timestamp I decided to put on our relationship without telling you, which means you don’t love me” will just never be anything but annoying to me ever, no matter how much I like the couple involved.  Honestly, it was shit like that that made me glad I didn’t do a lot of dating in high school.
The main plot is kind of weak too tbh, but I’m still in some ways fond of it, because it’s very clear that it’s all coming from a place of love.  They replace her car because they love her, and they try to recreate the old crappy car because they love her, and she pretends not to notice because she loves them right back.  The best scenes are the one-on-one interactions between Miley and Mamaw, where you can see how much they understand each other.  It was because of those that I almost bumped this up one… but they weren’t quite enough to sell me on this episode.  Sorry again.
“You Give Lunch A Bad Name” (Season Three)
Tumblr media
This one, again, not a very strong episode, but there are a few reasons I liked this one just a little bit more.  Part of it is I’m a sucker for Miley/Jackson centrics, and they strike such a perfect balance of brother-sister solidarity and sibling rivalry in this: the song in the beginning, the schemes, the mimic fights, them immediately pointing at each other when Mamaw asks them who the “guiltiest grandchild” is.  Another part is that weirdly, Lilly and Oliver seem to have more of their natural chemistry in this episode than they do in the one where they’re actually dating.  Case in point, their little quiet communication to leave in the middle of the siblings’ bickering without having to say a word to each other.
What’s interesting about this one is, Mamaw isn’t necessarily wrong that the kids are gonna take advantage of their dad being gone.  That’s exactly what they’re planning to do.  But then she takes it too far and holds on too hard, treating them like they’re 10 rather than 16 and 18 respectively.  There’s a classic conflict here of teenagers thinking they’re more mature than they really are, versus their family knowing they’re still kids but treating them like outright children instead of meeting them where they are. And I think it’s harder for her to accept they’re growing up than it is for Robby Ray because she isn’t around very much to see it happening.  While she recognizes in the end that they had good reason to be embarrassed, that theme of holding on to how things were because she’s afraid of losing them seems to be a consistent one with her in later seasons.
“I Am Mamaw, Hear Me Roar!” (Season Four)
Tumblr media
First off, I just want to say that I think having a Dolly episode and a Mamaw episode after “I’ll Always Remember You,” and right after each other, was a really smart choice, especially the way they did it.  Dolly can help her embrace what it’s like to be all-celebrity, all the time, and Mamaw reminds her not to forget her family, and how hard that kind of life can actually be. Not just for Miley, but for the people around her.  They just tie really well into that whole, “She’s always had the best of both worlds, but now she’s gotta learn what living without her secret feels like” theme that late stage Season 4 has going for it.
One thing that always strikes me about this episode is how it puts so much of her actions in context, not just in this episode, but retroactively.  Of course Robby Ray forgot to visit her when he was younger and his own music career was in full swing.  Of course she would panic when the same seems to be happening to Miley, when they can’t take one picture or have one tea without Miley getting hounded by her fans, because she doesn’t have Hannah Montana to hide behind anymore. (Of course, I’m not so sure the timeline adds up there, but I’m gonna let that go because of the point it was trying to make.)  Being smacked in the face with Miley’s fame is really a wakeup call for all of them, but that makes Miley’s efforts to make sure Mamaw understands how much she cares all the more sweet.
“Good Golly, Miss Dolly” (Season One)
Tumblr media
I’d initially put “Kiss It Goodbye” here, but I switched them when I realized I was underrating it— that episode was better than I remembered.  But I like this one, too!
This is Dolly’s first appearance and introduction, and she comes in with a bang.  The frou-frou, the flowers, and of course, the infamous camera that kickstarts the conflict of the episode.  Well, sort of— the real conflict is Miley’s confused feelings for Jake Ryan, torn between “falling all over him,” playing hard to get, and not wanting to give him the satisfaction of seeing her vulnerable.  The way it ends up intersecting with Oliver’s subplot of trying to compile a goodbye video for the principal is brilliant, and that sneaking scene?  Just amazing.
Of course, this puts her right back where she started, and she ends up regretting it when it’s seemingly too late for her and Jake, but her ripping up the flowers is funny, and then Dolly gets to show off her singing chops a little when she and Robby Ray cheer her up in a really sweet scene.  Beyond that, the subplot is… fine.  It’s pretty forgettable, but I liked it okay.  It’s not frustrating like some of the subplots in previous episodes on this list, but not quite as awesome as…
#3: “Kiss It Goodbye” (Season Four)
Tumblr media
And with that, we’ve cracked the top three!  This one surprised me upon rewatch.  I knew I liked it, I just didn’t know how much I liked it until I saw it again. I think part of it might be me attributing some of my own feelings about Cancel Culture as a whole and how that’s affected us for the worse overall, celebrity or not, as well as some meta-significance to Miley’s career, both at the time and afterwards.  But let me get into the episode itself rather than getting on those tangents.
Miley starts off being a little careless with her image… but this is understandable, as she’s used to having her privacy, and living without it’s gonna take some getting used to.  Dolly has this legendary entrance in a personalized helicopter, complete with a pink ladder.  She uses her own know-how about fame to help Miley navigate the paparazzi, reassures her after a brutal interview with Colin Lassiter, and then encourages both her and Robby Ray to sing with her at her performance.  While both of them object at first, Robby Ray eventually gets up the courage to go… which is the push Miley needs to get past her fears and get back on the horse herself.
Beyond the main plotline and overall message that I love, it’s really quotable, and has one of the best subplots this show has ever had.  Rico goes practically catatonic because the Stewarts, a family of “idiots” he looks down upon, fooled him, an evil genius with an ego that can’t handle that.  I also like that we see Lilly’s compassionate side coming back in this episode in both plotlines, it’s the one thing I felt season 4’s Lilly was lacking overall, and it was fun to see her point her sharp tongue towards herself for once this season.  And of course, Jackson enjoying Rico’s suffering, but ultimately being the one to help him out of it was perfect, and bringing back the choir from earlier that season was even better.
#2: “I Will Always Loathe You” (Season Two)
Tumblr media
Before anyone gets mad that this wasn’t my #1 pick, let me just say for the record that this episode is AWESOME.  Mamaw and Dolly’s rivalry is so explosive and they play off each other so beautifully, and the culmination of that into the “Granny Smackdown” is so well-done.  And look, yeah, I know that there were stunt doubles and probably a mannequin or two involved, but I don’t care, it’s a fantastic scene.  I love Robby Ray trying to make peace and ending up getting dragged into it, I love Hannah Montana awkwardly trying to salvage the situation, and ultimately breaking them up, and I love Jackson and Lilly scarfing down popcorn and watching the whole thing unfold from home.
If I had to pick which one of these episodes was the funniest, it would be this one, no contest.  The subplot here is great too; simple yes, but I think the simplicity works in contrast to just how much is going on in the main plot, and Oliver’s shame at his own involvement in the end?  Wonderful.  The contrast between the two women picking clothes for Miley’s award show, and the decision to genuinely make up after seeing how much it hurt Miley were executed beautifully too.  We don’t get the sense that they’re going to be BFFs, but I do like that the ending scene shows promise, that they’re at least capable of getting along, when they want to.   As Miley says, “You’re trying.  That is all I’ve ever wanted.”
So yeah, this episode?  Amazing.  But… not quite my favorite.
#1: “Grandmas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Play Favorites” (Season One)
Tumblr media
Remember when I said I’m a sucker for Miley/Jackson centrics?  Yeah.  This episode was probably where all of that began for me.  (Also the beginning of my feelings about Jackson going from “oh he’s pretty funny” to “LET ME LOVE YOU,” but I’ll try to keep my stanning to a minimum here.)
We start off with what appears to be a fairly straightforward story.  Hannah Montana is meeting the queen.  Jackson has a volleyball game.  Mamaw’s coming to visit, and she’s critical of Robby Ray, particularly his eating habits, she’s tepidly nice to Miley, but treats her as an afterthought, and she heaps praise and adoration and attention onto Jackson by the bucketload.  On the surface, it seems that this is about Mamaw unfairly favoring Jackson over Miley.  Right up until this happens:
“She’s gonna insult the queen and ruin my command performance all because of her ‘little Jackson.’  It’s always about you!”
“Me?!  Well, it’s never about me!  Everything in this family revolves around you!”
One comeback, and the tables are turned.  Yes, Mamaw hasn’t treated Hannah Montana getting to sing for the Queen of England with the respect and admiration it deserves.  But Robby Ray and Miley haven’t been treating Jackson with the respect and admiration he deserves.  When Miley snarks that Mamaw would rather go to Jackson’s volleyball game than her performance, she responds with, “Well, if I don’t, who will?  I don’t see either one of you heading for the door.”  She doesn’t ignore Miley because she loves her any less.  In an ironic turn of events, the reason she ignores Miley isn’t about her at all.
I do like, though, that the episode doesn’t treat this as “two wrongs make a right.”  Mamaw still apologizes for making Miley feel “invisible,” like her accomplishments don’t matter, like she doesn’t care.  Jackson feeling invisible because his dad and his sister and the whole rest of the world treat him that way, doesn’t excuse Mamaw treating Miley that way.  And the fact that all of it’s unintentional, and that the neglect is coming from someone who does, genuinely, love that person, doesn’t erase the harm it causes. This is a lesson for both of them, and Miley comes away with a greater understanding of what her brother goes through.
There is still a part of me that wishes this had gotten elaborated on more in the show?  Not that Jackson doesn’t bring up the favoritism issue multiple times afterward, but it’s not treated seriously very often after this, considering how often it comes up.  It saddens me to think that, for all the efforts they make in this episode to make sure they’re there for Jackson in the end, Miley and Robby Ray still end up falling into the same patterns with Jackson as the show goes on, and worse.   I can’t help but think this pattern of neglect and Jackson’s deterioration into “the family failure” are related, and while I don’t need every single episode to treat it as A Big Deal, the truth is, it is a big deal, and I wish the show had been more consistent in actually taking it seriously.
Tumblr media
So that’s my list!  In the end, I think we can all agree Mamaw and Dolly are both pretty iconic characters, and made the show all the richer for being on it.  I’ve loved getting a chance to look at their episodes again, and make sure to stay tuned for my next Ranked post for this series, where I may be talking about another iconic recurring character on this show….  (Hint: one of these episodes is on that list, too.)  Until next time!

CHAPTER FOUR
“If you two don’t stop eye fucking I’m gonna have to call HR,” Andy whispered with a smile in Zoey’s ear, hip checking her as he passed.
Zoey forced her eyes off of Brett from the other side of the bar and felt around her chin to make sure she hadn’t drooled. Two weeks had passed since they had slept together and the sexual tension between them only seemed to grow. Flirting only barely seemed to get her by and Andy consistently pointed out that she was staring again.
“Why don’t you just fuck in the storage room and be done with it? Y'all are making me horny just looking at you two,” Andy dumped ice into a shaker and started mixing a drink for a patron.
Zoey finished weighing out the last of the liquor for inventory and looked at him incredulously, “Why would you put that in my head? Do you think anyone would notice?”
Andy stopped what he was doing and stared at her in disbelief before rolling his eyes dramatically and finished the cocktail. She had gotten her set schedule after the first week, having the same schedule as Andy and work overlapping typically by the second half of Brett’s shift, except Mondays. Mondays were her only early shift day with Brett, ending at 9 PM, and were usually slow, so the night seemed to drag. Luckily, with her new schedule she’d be off Tuesdays and Wednesdays and she works late shift the rest of the week which means more patrons and more tips. And since she worked at a high end bar, most people tended to tip really well. A little cleavage helped, too.
The only downside to working nights was that no one was really home during the day. The only time the girls had was around dinner to catch up and chat, and they had weekends during the day time if no one made plans. But, Aurora’s been really busy with photo and video shoots, interviews, and meetings, and even though Nancy didn’t work a typical nine to five office job, she was still really busy piecing her work together in her room or out of the apartment for a meeting or to prepare fo some kind of deadline with her manager.
Luckily, her hours matched up with Harry’s schedule pretty well, even though he was on the other side of the country. At night, he obviously had a show to perform, usually while Zoey was at work, but the rest of his day typically consisted of either traveling, small meetings with his tour team, rehearsing, or all three. Still, he always found time to respond to her texts.
Their friendship was strange because they’ve only known each other for two weeks (three if you count the one day they spoke when she first moved in), but it feels like it’s been much longer. She often had to remind herself that he doesn’t know her family and never met Michael, Katie, or Jess whenever they talk about her home life, which was often.
At least once a day, without fail, Harry would ask her to tell him more about Jess, or a memory that she was fond of growing up. The questions always came at the perfect time and he seemed genuinely interested to hear what she had to say, engaging in the conversation. It helped Zoey to talk about Jess - it made her feel as though her best friend’s memory wasn’t fading. That someone cared enough to learn and talk about her in a positive way.
A brief phone call with her family made her realize this when her mom started crying that she missed Zoey and compared her daughter moving across the country to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis losing their daughter in a car accident; that she doesn’t get to see her anymore. Zoey knew she didn’t mean for it to be so insensitive, but her mom got an earful after that.
During a text conversation with her little sister, Katie, Zoey was filling her in on her outings with her new friends and a simple ‘you deserve to have nice friends again. Jess would have wanted it. I’m happy for you.’ made her bawl, though she’d never tell Katie that. Instead, she ran to Harry to talk about it.
She noticed during one of their chats the week prior that Harry was the only person she’d talk to about Jess without crying. And to prove her point, she had a quick catch up with Michael, and just the memory of the three of them together made her get emotional. It could have been because Harry didn’t know her personally, or because he’s been through similar situations, but she was grateful for the opportunity to involve Jess in a conversation without sobbing by the end of it.
Herself and Harry had started doing this thing where every time they were being hard on themselves or feeling particularly down, they’d send each other a GIF, video link, or text of a random quote from ‘The Princess Bride’, which always seemed to keep them in check.
Brett started making his way over to her and she hastily got back to work, having some banter with a few of her regulars and grabbing them another glass of beer when she felt a firm hand on her lower back. She drew her attention upwards to Brett who grinned at the men and charmingly joked, “Hello, men. Zoey treating you alright?”
“As always,” they nodded, holding up their newly filled glasses, “She’s our favorite server here.”
“They’re only saying that because I give them beer and let them talk shit,” Zoey smiled at them, shooting them a friendly wink.
“See what I mean? Can’t ask for much else,” one of the men laughed.
Andy overheard the conversation and in passing added a, “she’s just an angel, isn’t she?”
But the men must not have picked up on the sarcasm because they responded, “Yes, she is! Makes no sense why you’re single.”
“Relationships?” Zoey fed into them, “No way. I just got out of a four year relationship. I don’t need to be trapped again so soon.”
It’s not that she didn’t enjoy her relationship with Michael. She did, and he was a lovely guy. It was just her way of communicating with her patrons; by mirroring and matching. It’s how she was able to bond and build relationships so quickly, especially with her regulars. These two in particular loved to talk shit on their wives, so Zoey found ways to add to the conversation without antagonizing the subject. And her favorite trick when having these conversations was to turn their mindset around before they left. Little things to make them ease up on their spouse. Something along the lines of ‘That’s a nice shirt. Did your wife get it for you? She’s got great taste, you look amazing in that!’ or ‘Your wife made you spaghetti for dinner? Lucky guy, I don’t know many women who know how to cook anymore’. Usually little white lies like that made them feel better about their wives without her actually having to say ‘shut the hell up and be nice to your wife, you old dingbat’ and she usually got better tips by the time they left.
The men raised their glasses in agreement to her statement and Brett turned his head to the side, wordlessly asking if he could borrow her for a moment. They stepped towards the back of the bar, doing a quick once over to make sure Andy didn’t need more assistance before he leant against the edge of the counter cooly and asked, “Are we still on for tonight?”
“Yeah. Your shift ends at 9 PM, too, right?” she asked, earning a nod. She continued, “Okay, everyone else will probably take a little longer to get there. Jake and Melissa are gonna be picking up some food, and Andy left a few things at his apartment he needed to grab. So you can always head over with me after work, or meet me there later.”
Nancy had flown back home over the weekend to celebrate her friend’s wedding and spend time with family, and Aurora had gone to Virginia for a shoot where Harry was coincidentally doing a show in the town over which allowed her an opportunity to see him in concert and spend some time with him before he left for the next city in the morning, so Zoey used the empty condo as an opportunity to invite some new friends over for a game night, with her roommates knowledge, of course. All of her friends worked with her on rotating days, so they were used to the hours.
“I’ll just go with you. It’ll be easier that way,” he said casually before his lips twitched upwards, “You know, if you wanted alone time with me, all you had to do was ask.”
“Shut up,” Zoey giggled, playfully hitting his chest.
The rest of their shift steadily got more quiet, slowing out to only six patrons in the bar by the time their shift was over. Andy, Brett, and Zoey clocked out and headed towards the employee parking lot around back.
“I’ll call you when I’m five minutes away. You better not miss my call to let me in ‘cuz y’all are busy humpin’ on the kitchen counter,” Andy shook a key at them with an eyebrow raised, causing the two to laugh.
“I don’t screw where the food goes,” Brett responded, “but the couch is a different story.”
“Nasty,” Andy scrunched his nose at them before getting in his car and starting it up.
Zoey led Brett to her car, slipping into the driver's seat as he rounded to the passenger side. A few stray hairs had fallen from her messy ponytail and she smoothed them back, turning the AC on low fan. Evenings in May seemed to be fairly cool in LA so far. The stereo bluetooth automatically connected to Zoey’s phone and began playing ‘Are You Bored Yet’ by Wallows, which startled her, quickly turning down the volume. Being in such a confined space with Brett made her nervous. He had a distinct smell of beer and coconuts, which seemed like an odd mix, but somehow it worked. She could really stand a few shots right now to ease the tension. Too bad she was driving.
“So what’s the deal with your roommates? They out?” Brett asked as they pulled onto the freeway.
“Yeah, Nancy’s with her family and Rory is in Virginia for work. She might actually be with Harry right now, though,” she noticed the time, doing quick math and realizing it was Midnight on the east coast and Harry was probably done with his show by now, remembering he said he had some kind of after party planned with a few of his band mates and tour members, which she thought was weird for a Monday night.
“Wild that you’re all friends with him. But it seems like everyone knows everyone in LA, so I shouldn’t be surprised. So what’s his deal? Are they dating?”
When he put it that way, she did find it a little crazy. She never put too much thought into the fact that she knew Harry Styles, let alone was on a friendly communicating basis with him. She supposed it was just because of the timing when they met, she wasn’t in the right headspace, so by the time they started getting close, the shock and exposure to him had already sunk in and didn’t seem new.
“Uh...kinda? I don’t know, it’s complicated,” Zoey responded.
And it was true. She honestly had no clue what was going on between Harry and Rory. Honestly, she didn’t even think they knew what was going on with each other. She couldn’t blame them, though. They were both super busy at the moment and their hangout today would only make it a total of five times they’ve seen each other in person. She wasn’t even sure if they had an actual date yet or not.
Brett nodded and a moment of silence filled the car. She felt him staring at her and he shifted his body towards her letting his elbow rest on the center console, his muscular arms so big that they lightly brushed against hers. She did a triple take, the pull of his gaze too strong to ignore, “What?” she asked, putting a hand on her cheek to conceal her blushing.
“You should go on a date with me.”
“What?” she sputtered. He was so straightforward and his confidence in his statement took her off guard. Brett was about to repeat himself when it clicked and she said, “I can’t go on a date with you.”
“Why not? Was I that bad in bed?”
“Well, now that you mention it…” she joked. Brett gasped in mock disappointment and she continued, shaking her head, “We work together. I don’t want things to get sticky at work. Besides, I was serious with what I said tonight. I just got out of a four year relationship. I’m not ready to jump into another one right now. Especially not the first guy I sleep with.”
“It’s a date, Zoey. Not a marriage proposal. We can keep it casual if you want. I just like spending time with you, that’s all. Please? Just one date.”
Zoey paused in contemplation. The idea of keeping things casual with Brett did sound appealing. It reminded her of Nancy and Cade’s situation, almost like a friend’s with benefits. No strings attached. She wasn’t opposed to it. If only Jess were here right now to see a sexy Australian man begging to go on a date with her. Twenty five years in Pennsylvania and she barely turned heads, but a week in LA and she’s getting hit on daily by successful, attractive men and her sexy foreign coworker? The move and personality upgrade was really working out for her and she was kicking herself for not listening to Jess sooner.
“I don’t know...”
“If it’ll make you feel more comfortable we can do a double date with someone. Andy and whoever. Or even Rory and Harry. Whoever you want.”
Zoey pursed her lips in contemplation, “Okay, I’ll think about it.” He smiled widely and Zoey quickly added, “Don’t get your hopes up. I haven’t said yes yet.”
“Good enough for me,” Brett said, a smirk spreading across his face, “So what are the odds of me getting you back in that bed tonight?”
“Slim to none,” she snorted.
“...So you’re saying there’s a chance?”
Once at her condo, Brett took a seat at one end of the sectional while Zoey quickly straightened up and drug out a few games from Nancy’s stash, with her blessing. It didn’t take long for Jake and Melissa to show up with a few two liters of soda, three boxes of pizza, and some wings for everyone to enjoy, and as soon as Andy arrived, twenty minutes later, they all dug in while catching up and joking about different work related instances.
They were in the middle of trying to decide if they wanted to play ‘5 Second Rule’ or ‘Incoherent’ when she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She struggled to pull it out of her tight black pants and saw a text from Harry. Opening it, she saw a GIF of Princess Bride with the quote that read ‘Life is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something’.
Zoey snorted, typing back, ‘Okay, melodramatic. What happened? Didn’t get a big enough crowd at the concert tonight?’
She placed her phone face down on her thigh and laughed at Andy who was mocking Brett’s accent because he didn’t want to play ‘5 Second Rule’, which Brett was fighting hard for, listing all the pros and cons to the game. Her phone buzzed again, once, twice, and on the third buzz she got confused, thinking he was sending her rapid texts at first, only to turn the phone over and see that Harry was calling her. She hadn’t expected a call from him, and they never spoke over the phone with each other before like he did with Nancy and Rory. Her friends realized she had gotten a phone call and turned to look at her as she stood up.
“One sec,” she called, heading down the hall.
“Hurry! I need you to back me up so we don’t have to start out with this stressful, dumbass game!” Andy called after her.
She heard Brett quickly retort, “You just don’t like it cuz you can’t think quickly!” and a cracking noise that sounded almost like a slap before slipping into her bedroom and closing the door behind her.
Warily, she answered the phone and whispered, “Hello?”
Harry’s deep, exhausted voice sounded through her phone, dramatically quoting another line from Princess Bride, saying, “Fezzik! Listen! Do you hear? That is the sound of ultimate suffering. My heart made that sound when Rugen slaughtered my father.”
She laughed, pacing the length of her room, her brief feeling of shock being replaced with curiosity. “What could possibly have gone wrong at…” she checked the clock and quickly converted the time difference on the east coast, “Almost 2 AM? Where’s Rory?”
Harry groaned, “We got into a fight.”
“Well...did you do something stupid?”
“I didn’t think it was a big deal at first, but it turned into one apparently.”
The more he spoke and the more she heard his voice, the more it started to hit her who she was talking to. She wasn’t a huge follower of his, but she was a fan enough to have heard him speak in videos and interviews that to be able to have these kinds of conversations with him and it be normal knowing that they were friends was hard to wrap her head around. Even so, hearing his voice over her phone wasn’t as startling as she thought it should be. In fact, it felt more calming than anything else.
“What happened?” she asked.
“Well, after the show, Rory came backstage and I was introducing her to some people and said, ‘This is my friend, Rory’....”
“....Okay?” Zoey urged, waiting for him to continue. But he didn’t.
“See?! It wasn’t a big deal! But she got upset that I called her my friend and was being sort of quiet and when I asked if she was okay she just kind of went off asking me how I could introduce her as a friend after we just had sex and after I flew out to see her twice, and accused me of leading her on and all this stuff.”
Zoey listened, continuing to pace the room as Harry ranted. When he finished, she cleared her throat and spoke carefully, “Well...Harry, she’s not entirely wrong.”
“You think I was leading her on?!” Harry sounded more hurt than offended. “I just introduced her as my friend and she got mad. I wasn’t lying. She’s not my girlfriend. What else was I supposed to say?”
“Exactly. She’s not your girlfriend. And who’s fault is that?”
“What do you mean?”
“Look, you know she likes you. And you obviously like her, too. I mean why else would you fly across the country to spend one day with a person…”
“I do it all the time,” he defended himself.
“Okay, Mr. Perfect. The point is, you two already act like a couple. You talk almost every day. You’re not seeing anyone else but each other - at least, as far as I’m aware. Don’t you think it’s possible that she’s been waiting for you to ask her out and make it official, and by you introducing her as a ‘friend’, you could have just invalidated her entire impression of your relationship and where it was headed?”
Harry sighed, and after a moment to process he breathed, “I didn’t mean to invalidate her feelings. And it’s not like I don’t want to date Rory. We talk all the time, yeah, but I still don’t know her that well and I didn’t ask her to not see anyone else. We haven’t even been on a date yet. Plus, I just don’t want to start a relationship in the middle of tour when I have two months left. I’ve been doing this enough to know that travel can really hurt a relationship. Most people can’t deal with the distance and time restraints. Maybe if she’s still interested by the time the tour is over, then we can maybe talk about making things official. I’m just not ready yet.”
“Trust me, I get it. But did you tell her that?”
“No.”
“Well you need to tell her something so she doesn’t feel like she’s wasting her time. Don’t just leave her hanging like that.”
“I can’t ask her to wait for me. That’s not right. I want her to do it because she wants to, not because I’m dangling the promise of a possibility over her head.”
Zoey pursed her lips, understanding what he was saying while rummaging through her dresser for pajamas to change into, “Just tell her that you’re sorry and you understand where she’s coming from, but that you don’t want to rush things, especially while you’re in the middle of touring, and if she’s okay with it, the two of you can just take things one day at a time and you just want to get to know her more for now. Just be honest with her, Harry. Give her the benefit of the doubt. She’s a very understanding person.”
“Yeah, you’re right. That sounds good,” Harry responded, the words clicking in his head.
A knock on the door startled her and Andy’s muffled voice echoed through the crack, “I got them to agree on ‘Incoherent’ first, so hurry the hell up!”
“Be right there!” Zoey called back.
A gasp was heard from her phone as Harry muttered, “Shit! I forgot you were doing game night tonight. I’m so sorry for interrupting.”
“It’s fine. It only just started. There’s not many of us.”
“Is Theo there?” Harry quipped, the nickname Harry gave Brett made her laugh. Ever since he mentioned that Brett looked like Theo James from Divergent, she wasn’t able to unsee it.
“Yeah, he’s here,” she giggled, quickly changing out of her work clothes and into some sweats, fixing her ponytail.
“What’s going on with you two anyway?” Harry asked, “Are you dating, or just flirting still?”
“Funny you should mention that. He asked me on a date earlier.”
“Really? You gonna go?”
“I don’t know. I really don’t want anything serious right now, but he says we can keep it casual.”
“So...friends with benefits?” Harry pressed.
“That’s why I’m not sure. I don’t know how I feel about it, especially with someone I work with. But it’s only one date. I guess I could see how it goes. He did say that we could go on a double date if I’d feel more comfortable and suggested you and Rory. But I know your schedule’s gotta be insane with the tour and you’ve already flown back enough times.”
“I wouldn’t mind. I’m actually off for three days next week. I had plans Tuesday morning, but I could probably fly out right afterwards and head back Thursday. So maybe Wednesday night we could all go out?”
“Really? You don’t have to if it’ll be too much for you.”
“No, I want to. I told you, I do it all the time. My team will hate me, but oh well. It’ll be fun. I should probably go fix things with Rory first, though.”
Zoey laughed, “Good idea. Good luck.”
They each said goodbye and Zoey threw her phone on the charger before making her way back out to the living room. She took her spot back next to Andy and she smiled, excited to start the game with her friends. She felt proud of herself as she took in the scene, seeing her small group of friends laughing and joking together. She felt like she was finally starting to build the life she always wanted for herself. She never had this many people who she genuinely cared for and that cared for her in return. Sure, she had Jess and Michael, but that was really it. Zoey was finally creating a little family away from her family and it felt good.
After a few more games, everyone was beginning to get tired so the group decided to settle down with a movie. Zoey had dozed off, her head resting on Andy’s lap with her body curled into a ball. When she stirred awake it was nearly 3 AM and she noticed everyone else had passed out. Brett was in the corner and Jake and Melissa were cuddling on the other end. Her mouth was dry and tasted of cotton. Carefully, trying not to wake Andy, she slipped off of the couch and tiptoed towards the kitchen to grab a glass of water.
The blue light on the fridge dispenser illuminated as a steady stream of water poured into her glass. It looked so clear and refreshing that her mouth started salivating at the thought of it when she heard a shuffle behind her. She jumped, turning to see Brett padding his way in, rubbing sleep from his eyes.
“Jesus!” she clutched her chest again. How was she so easily scared?
He ignored her shock. “Can I have one?”
Zoey passed him the glass she had just poured and grabbed another glass for herself, filling it up with water. Brett gulped it down and let out a breath of air when he finished it before she had even raised her cup to her lips. She raised an eyebrow, sipping at the water.
“Tonight was fun, huh?” he asked in a low voice, leaning against the counter.
Zoey nodded, putting her half drunk glass of water down, “Yeah, thanks for coming.”
“We should do game nights more often. Nancy and Rory can join next time, too.”
“They’d love that,” Zoey agreed, taking another sip of water.
After a moment of silence, Brett spoke up again, “So...have time to think about that date yet?”
The water went down the wrong pipe and she struggled trying not to make a scene of choking, holding it in. But her eyes water as she spoke, “Yeah, uhm,” she caved and cleared her throat, continuing, “Yeah, I actually talked to Harry. He’s the one that called earlier, and he said he was down to do a double date next Wednesday, if that’s okay.”
It was hard to look at Brett when he smirked like that. He must have pulled so many girls by that look. Actually, she KNEW he pulled so many girls by that look from the amount of numbers he got at the bar. And honestly, she didn’t mind. It’s not like she saw a future with him. But he was hot and she trusted Brett enough to have a little fun with him.
Jess’ words kept replaying in her mind, again. ‘It’s fun not having strings attached’ and ‘Have fun, but be safe.’ Zoey thought about those exact words every day since she last had sex with Brett and how right her friend was. It’s not that she needed to have sex, but the liberation she felt by just being able to have sex with who she wanted and when she wanted was something so incredibly exhilarating and indescribable. She knew that a commitment was never a requirement to have sex, and she was reminded of this often by Jess, but it took her best friend dying and her moving across the country to really understand that. And to see Nancy, her kind, fun, carefree roommate, doing what she wanted to do and not worrying about what others might think really broadened her outlook on sex and intimacy.
Brett’s mouth was moving, and she knew he was talking, but Zoey couldn’t hear a damn thing. All she could pay attention to was his dark, mysterious eyes and his juicy, plump lips and how badly she wanted to taste them. Fuck it, she thought, grabbing him by the shirt and standing on her tiptoes to smash her lips onto his. He flinched, shocked by her abruptness, but quickly pulled her closer to his solid chest. When she finally pushed away from him, her heart pounded and her lips were already damp from his. Zoey could feel her body tingling from her knees up to her eyes as she craved someone, anyone’s touch. Brett could be enough for now.
“Let’s go,” she urged, looking up at him through her eyelashes.
Still stunned and unable to find the words to say, Brett nodded, mouth still agap, as she led him towards her bedroom.

“I can’t believe you dragged me into this.” (AKA me and some of your ships
The four of them stood there, cloaks being taken by butlers as music floated in from the ballroom.
Ellie kept her smile controlled as she took in the glittering chandeliers and bright dresses and coats. Bursting out in an overly-excited grin was, she’d been told, completely inappropriate for someone of her station who should be used to balls.
But of course the farmgirl in her was enchanted with it all.
And naturally Master Jacob was not. “I can’t believe you dragged me into this,” he whispered furiously to his mother.
Mrs. Temple didn’t bother to mask her amusement at his irritation. “Oh, Jake, you’ll be fine. Getting out from behind your books can be good for you. And,” her voice got stern. “You will meet this charming young lady I’ve found for you and you will not embarrass me- Jacob Ryan Temple- you-”
Ellie watched her fake grandmother chase after her equally fake uncle as if he were a toddler loose in a sweet shop.
“Stars help them.” Miss Ava sighed and looked around the grand foyer. “I suppose I’ll be your chaperone for this evening, Lady Temple. Best not let any of these boys get too friendly and dance with you.” She smiled teasingly. “Stars know how terrible that’d be.”
“Terribly fun.” Ellie walked alongside her governess, smiling politely at anyone who caught her eye. “But who’ll be my chaperone if you dance with someone?”
Miss Ava’s smile turned bittersweet. “I’m not supposed to dance. I’m to watch you. I’m no Lady, or Baroness. I teach proper manners to them. I’m of no consequence in the world of politics or marriage.”
“I’m the daughter of an exiled Lord. Am I of consequence?”
Ellie had been expecting a chuckle or a good-humored admonishing tone. She was not prepared for Miss Ava to whirl and stare at her with an unusually ferocious light in her eyes.
“Of course you are! You’re a member of the Temple family, one of the most well-regarded families of nobility. Even if your supposed father was exiled, you’re a Lady by birth to these people. And, might I add, probably more likely to be social than a certain Uncle of yours. You are in all likeliness of as much consequence as the Lord Temple in the Council in King’s City, because you are a young Lady who no one knew about until months ago. A Lady Temple, by birth and not marriage, hasn’t been in the Court for generations.” Miss Ava seemed to sense she’d started to overwhelm Ellie. “My apologies, but you are of consequence.”
“Alright. I am.” She swallowed the sudden lump in her throat and scanned the surrounding crowd, lest anyone have overheard them.
A pair of scowling eyes caught hers.
“Oh, no.” Ellie forced a polite smile. “Someone’s going to come say hello to me and pretend he’s not who you know he is.”
“Who-” Miss Ava caught sight of Vincent weaving his way through the mingling nobles. “Is that-”
“No, it’s just another Lord.” Ellie nudged her gently with her elbow and curtsied politely to Vincent. “Hello.”
He nodded to Miss Ava before speaking. “If I stand here with you and pretend I’m talking, do you think I’ll be left alone? There’s no one else who’ll…” Vincent paused, looking pained by his words. “Anthony isn’t here yet.”
Ellie grinned. “Oh, so you’re stuck with me as back-up? Afraid you’ll be asked important questions you don’t know the answer to?”
“No, but if I’m talking to someone, no one will interrupt me. I’d rather spend the evening with you than making polite small talk to hundreds of-” He paused and gave passing Duke a look. “Other people.”
“Until Anthony gets here.”
Vincent looked particularly uncomfortable for a beat. “I… suppose you could still talk with us.”
“Oh, how lovely, I get to be with the interesting people.” Ellie ignored his grimace with a smile.
“I see you’ve found Vincent, El.” Master Jacob joined their little group. “I’ve been looking for Matthew, but-”
“He’s not here, and neither is Anthony.” Vincent didn’t seem to care that he interrupted. “It might be a while. There was a long line of carriages earlier.”
“Oh, I know, we sat it in.” Master Jacob’s eyes fixated on something over Ellie’s head. “Okay, Miss Tremain, will you do me the honor of this dance?”
Three pairs of eyes turned to Miss Ava, where her perfectly controlled expression had gone and shattered on the floor. “I beg your pardon?” she stuttered out.
“You, me, dance floor now. I am not meeting this woman my mother’s found.” Master Jacob at least had the sense to offer her his hand. At her hesitance, he added a ‘please’.
She seemed at loss for words. “I- I’m chaperoning Ellie, and-”
“Nonsense, Vincent will keep the boys away.”
“I am a boy,” he added.
“Oh a boy? Not a man?” Ellie gave him a look. “And here I thought-
“This is going to be miserable.” He hunkered down into his cravat, glaring at her.
Ellie smiled back, self-satisfied and watching Master Jacob lead a still-protesting Miss Ava to the dance floor. A moment later Mrs. Temple appeared in their line of sight.
“Ellie, dear, where did that uncle of yours get off to-” Mrs. Temple didn’t seem to notice Vincent beside her, nor did the Lady with her. “And where is your chaperone? I thought Miss Tremain-” Her eyes landed on Vincent. “How do you do, young man?”
“Well enough,” he said flatly, ending it there. Vincent was not known for his endless conversation.
The Lady in Mrs. Temple’s clutches frowned at him. “Aren’t you-”
“Stars in the heavens, is he dancing- Is he dancing with Miss Tremain?!” Mrs. Temple’s nostrils flared. “I am going to have some words with him. Come with me.”
The Lady was dragged off by Mrs. Temple before either Ellie or Vincent could learn her name.
“Can I ask you something?”
Ellie stamped down on the ‘you just did’ response that rose in her throat. “Certainly.”
“Is he always trying to avoid the ladies that Lady Temple finds for him?”
“Yes.”
“Huh.” Vincent looked thoughtful. “Do you think he could teach me.”
Ellie tried to stifle a snort. “It’s going to involve talking to strangers and dancing with people you aren’t fond of. Miss Ava and Uncle Jacob barely get along.”
He sighed and snagged a pair of champagne flutes. “I’ll just settle with talking with you. If I danced with anyone they’d get the wrong idea.”
“I don’t.”
“Well, Eleanor, you’re…” Vincent paused, searching for a word. “You’re… You know how I am with people. And- What are you doing?”
She kept the overly concerned look on her face. “Are you feeling alright? I think that’s as close as you’ve ever come to complimenting me. Best make sure you aren’t sick.”
If he found her teasing amusing, he didn’t show it. “You know I’m not charming and you’re accepting of that, is all I meant.”
“You’re putting it mildly.” Ellie sipped her champagne and decided she didn’t like it. “I bet you the next round of drills that you can’t be charming.”
“No.”
“Afraid of a friendly wager?” She looked at him over her glass. “Afraid to lose?”
“He’s afraid of what now?” Anthony appeared at her elbow and grinned down at Vincent. “Whatever it is, I dare you.”
He looked incredibly put off. “Fine. Ellie, you be the judge if I’m charming or not.” Vincent set his flute down on a side table and dropped into a deep bow, her hand in his. “Lady Temple,” he purred. “Such a delight  to see you here.” He kissed her hand and straightened, still holding on to her hand. “Might I be so bold as to say that you look lovely this evening.” His smile was small enough that it looked genuine and softened his eyes. After a beat he dropped her hand.
“Whoa there.” Anthony grinned shook his head. “And I thought I was the charming one.”
Vincent’s glower returned. “Well, Eleanor?”
Ellie shrugged. “I suppose that was charming, in an unpracticed sort of way. You’ve got nothing on Duncan Caldwell.”
His frown deepened. “Of course I don’t. You fancy him so you’re biased.”
Anthony leaned down between them. He was unfortunately well over half a foot taller than either, and thus had to bend down on occasion to be heard over hundreds of other voices talking in a large room. “Uh-huh. You heard her, Vincent, you need to practice.”
“Yeah, Vincent, practice never hurt. And I know Beth Caldwell could-”
“You stop right there, Eleanor, I am not going to charm Beth Caldwell.” Vincent flicked his gaze to Anthony. “But now that we’ve seen how charming I am, it’s your turn. Go on, I hear Beth could use some charming.”
Ellie smiled sweetly at Anthony. “I dare you.”
“Damn you both.” He stood and straightened his cravat. “This isn’t going to end well.”

i love everything that you post about hockey and the players and the pens wiki and all of that! Thank you so much for existing and being the patient person that you are:) that said, do you know when you will post something that you've written? i really miss your writing
Thank you very much! This is such a lovely message Lightning, Before the Thunder – which probably won’t be finished until late next month at the earliest. In the meantime, here’s a random ficlet for you XDD
When Sidney jerks awake to the sound of Haggy and Horny crooning “You’ve got a friend in me,” to each other, with the baby Pens enthusiastically Ohhh-ing and Ahhh-ing at the appropriate moments, the first thing Sidney says is, “God dammit. Who the fuck pissed off a witch?”
Geno has just enough time to tell him, “Wasn’t witch, was—” before he too is singing:
“Would you let me see beneath your bea—” Geno cuts off abruptly, his eyes going wide.
Sidney blinks at him. “A siren,” he guesses, incredulous. “Someone pissed off a siren?”
Geno nods his head. He’s got his hands clamped over his mouth firmly.
“Who?” Sidney asks, but Geno just shakes his head again, refusing to remove his hands from over his mouth. Sidney sighs. He doesn’t really need Geno to tell him anyway. There’s only a select few of his teammates who are dumb enough to piss off a magical being and not realise (or care) that it would inevitably end up in curses and spells.
“Okay,” Sidney says. He gives Geno a friendly nudge before getting up from his seat. “Don’t worry. I’ll figure out what’s going on. I promise.” Finding out what’s going on is usually synomous with ending whatever is going on, because most spells are easily countered. Other times, the spell needs to run its course.
Sidney fervently hopes this isn’t one of those times.
Geno smiles and sings, “When I see your face—” before promptly shutting up, his hands flying over his mouth again.
Sidney holds back another sigh. All right then.
He walks past Haggy and Horny—they sing, “This is your heart, it’s alive,” as Sidney moves around them, making his way further down the plane until he reaches Tanger and Flower. Flower gives him a shit-eating grin. He sings, “Is it too late now to say sorry. Yeah I know that I let you down. Is it too late to say I’m sorry now.”
Sidney pinches the bridge of his nose. “What the hell happened?” he asks Tanger, because Tanger is a null like Sidney and can’t be affected by spells or curses. He’ll be able to speak. Thankfully. “We were fine when we boarded the plane. Did I miss something earlier?” Sidney says.
Tanger rolls his eyes. “Jake n’bake over there is your culprit,” he says, pointing at where Jake is standing with the rest of the baby Pens at the front of the plane, chanting, “Go, get your freak on. Go, get your freak on.” Tanger snorts. “Jake got into it with a Flyers fan when we went out for pizza. Girl was a siren. It’s a delayed curse.”
Sidney groans. “How many times must I tell them? Never go out in Philly. Or Washington. Or Columbus, or—” He breaks off when Tanger starts laughing and Flower sings, “Beat me, hate me. You can never break me…All I wanna say is that, they don’t really care about us.”
“Yes,” Sidney says and glares at Flower. “Exactly.” People love to hate the Penguins. It’s not a stat anyone keeps track of or anything, but Sidney is pretty sure that there is no team in the league that has been cursed as many times as the Penguins.
Every two months, it feels as if there is something new. Sidney shudders. At least they’re over the truth spell Dumo accidentally cast a few weeks back.
If someone had asked to touch his ass one more time—“I just want to know if it’s as big as it looks.”—Sidney may actually have committed murder. Or helped Geno do it, because he’d been uncharacteristically pissed off about the whole thing.
Usually Geno find the curses amusing. He’d been particularly fond of the fairytale one.
(Sidney has since learnt never to leave Geno unsupervised with a sword and armour.)
“Why didn’t you stop him?” Sidney asks Tanger. “You guys were with him, weren’t you?”
Tanger shakes his head. “I stepped outside to call Catherine, and when I got back in, this one was egging them on.” Tanger looks at Flower fondly. “You’re an idiot, mon ami,” he tells him.
“Why would you make it worse, Flower? Jesus. You know these things happen to us.”
Flower grins up at Sidney. He shrugs, opens his mouth, and sings, “Cuz I’m a boss. Uh uh, watch the beat go.”
Sidney stares at him. “We’re going to have to wait this out, don’t we?”
“Probably,” Tanger says cheerfully.
When Sidney makes his way back to his seat next to Geno at the front of the plane, Coach grabs his arm as he walks by and raps, “Now, I ain’t much of a poet, but I know somebody once told me to seize the moment and don’t squander it. ‘Cause you never know when it all could be over tomorrow.”
“Uh,” Sidney says, and beats a hasty retreat. He has no idea what the hell that was about.
When he finally reaches his seat, Geno is slanted against the window, asleep. Sidney smiles softly at the sight.
Usually, Sidney sits next to Flower, but Geno is the only one who can stand to listen to Sidney sleep talk about hockey, and Flower always disappears from his seat whenever Sidney falls asleep. It’s not unusual for Sidney to wake up to Geno sitting next to him, his breathing a steady hum as he flicks through whichever book he’s brought with him.
“Geno,” Sidney says gently, shaking his shoulder to wake him. “Come on. You need a pillow or something. If you sleep like that, your neck is going to be killing you later.”
Geno’s eyes flutter open slowly. He turns his head, and when he sees Sidney, he sighs groggily and croons, “Sweet creature, sweet creature. Wherever I go, you bring me home.” He tilts against Sidney and falls asleep again.
Sidney laughs softly, startled. He strokes a hand through the soft tufts of Geno’s hair. “Okay,” he says and feels a warmth inside, down to the very tips of his toes.
Maybe he knows what Coach was rapping about after all.
(It takes two days for people to stop singing. All things told, it wasn’t actually that bad.)

Follow your fellow sheep down to the slaughter, Lennon.
You’ve been accepted as Colette Young with the FC Emmy Rossum. Saying wow five hundred times would not adequately describe how we felt about your audition. The depth you put into Colette was incomparable. she already had so many issues, and you were cruel enough to add to the pot. You are just such an incredibly talented writer, and we can’t wait to watch this town devour your characters.
Please send in your account within the next twenty-four hours.
desired character  →  colette wanda young
face claims  ⟨⟨ please list 2-3 options ⟩⟩ →  emmy rossum, phoebe tonkin
why do you want this character  →  Colette is a fascinating character to me; her skeleton suggests that there is a lot more than what meets the eye which I positively love. It’s not that she’s stronger than she seems, it’s that she is likely weaker. The first bullet point suggests someone who is fearless and blunt, but the fact that she allows these men to walk all over her suggest something else. She reminds me a lot of the women I grew up around- truly southern women. Not the bless your heart church goers, but the redneck wives that are tough as nails but ‘know their place.’ I have a love/hate relationship with that trope and I wanted to try to make it my own.
character quote  ⟨⟨ this can be dialogue that your character has said, a song lyric, etc. just something that catches the vibe of your person ⟩⟩ →  i have survived so many fires, i can no longer tell if i am alive or still burning
possible future plot ideas  ⟨⟨ this could be pertaining to a certain direction you wish to take your character as well as connections and potential plots with other characters  ⟩⟩ →
I’m still trying to feather out exactly where I think Colette would go but I do have a few basic connections with most of the groups already existing in bumfuck.
i. The MCs; Obviously, she works for them, she fears them in her own way, and she fucking despises them. I would love to see how her interactions differ between the older more racist members and the newer ones. She would be weary of all of them and I can’t see her being fond of Hunter at all- ‘yes ma’am. no, i don’t mean hunter- i mean ma’am. because like it or not having that name don’t make you better than me, ya’ fuckin’ bitch.’ Colette hates it when people talk down to her and I could see Hunter doing that a lot- doing woman’s work at all that. It would really rub her the wrong way because of everyone involved with the MCs, she would expect Hunter to get it. And the fact that she would treat her the same way as the testosterone fueled dumbasses, boils her blood. If anything, she might try to fuck Leo to secure her position in the bar, and to make sure one of his trigger happy minions won’t shoot her if she ever snaps at them.
ii. Church Goers; Depending on how long the members have been there, they might remember Colette and her siblings coming to church every Sunday. Or when they suddenly stopped because their momma was serving life in prison for shooting their daddy in the head. It wouldn’t be that shocking if one of them reached out to her family following the tragedy of their father’s death. Colette fucking hates the church and everything that has to do with religion but she likely sees a lot of them around town. She has probably butted heads more than once with Jeremiah and Juliet, which isn’t doing her any favors. As her skeleton stated, she’s likely served multiple church goers and she loves having something over the self proclaimed saints.
iii. The Law; She, like any self respecting redneck, does not much care for the police. She doesn’t trust them and even though it has been over ten years since she shot her father, she is still worried that someone is going to reopen the case of her father’s murder and find her guilty. No one, save for one of her younger sisters, knows that she was the one that killed her father. I would love to see that fear explored on a deeper level.
iv. Meth Ring; Her family- her father, her mother, her brothers and sisters- have all dabbled in the drugs and meth has always had a place in her family’s home. Her siblings have probably dealt for the ring before. I could see her father have worked for or with the ring before, but if that doesn’t comply with what you guys had in mind I totally understand. Either way, I think that she, or at least her family, would be well known to the ring. Remi is, of course, another connection that I think would be amazing because I can’t see how this relationship wouldn’t be toxic as hell. As much as Colette knows that she’s addicted- like really fucking addicted to the point that she’s turning into her dearest mother- she can’t stop. That’s the great thing about addiction, ya see. And she probably has a love/hate relationship with Remi, loves that he keeps giving her what she wants but hates him because she sees him as something of an enabler.
v. Other- Character Specific; Colette could have a very interesting relationship with Rhys, simply because he likely frequents the bar she works at and he’s associated with the criminal justice system so she already has a chip on her shoulder against him.
Other - General;
- Colette is very protective over her siblings, particularly her younger sisters. She’s acted as the ‘father with a shotgun’ for much of their lives so she probably could have threatened someone who was attempting to fuck one of her siblings.
- Colette is a sucker for a pretty face - well, not really, but she does get around a lot. I could see her having one or more fuck buddies.
- I can’t imagine Colette has a lot, or really any, friends, but I imagine that she has one or two from high school or childhood that remained in her life. After all, with how fuckin’ small bumfuck is, it would be impossible not to.

biography  ⟨⟨ minimum of 400 words ⟩⟩ →
tw: rape, sexual abuse, domestic abuse, abortion, murder
John Young, a cousin fuckin’ good ole boy, had nine children with Claudette Pickens; most of his kin were following in his footsteps of making a career out of being incarcerated. His fourth child and first daughter, Colette Wanda, was the apple of his eye. Of course, that meant instead of slapping her around like he did his boys, he saved her until she was old enough to take him to bed. The first eight years of her life were relatively happy; her house stunk of meth and cigarettes and desperation, but she thanked the Lord above that her daddy loved her enough not to put out his cigarettes on her arms. Her brothers got the brunt of her father’s anger, though on occasion he would strike Claudette with a beer bottle. But his daughters, his precious little girls, would remain untouched until a certain age.
She tries not to think about her childhood after her eighth birthday, the year John said she became a woman. The touch of older men is still enough to make her stomach turn and her hands twitch towards her knife. The years after that didn’t matter much to her. They were spent hiding bruises on herself and on her siblings, learning how to hold her liquor and when to switch daddy from bourbon to apple juice, how to throw a punch and how to take one. It cultivated a pistol in her mouth, one that caused her father to promote her from a bedwarmer, to a punching bag and a bedwarmer. Her momma was so proud.
Colette tries not to think about the years between eight and fourteen. She was fourteen when her father got her pregnant. She was fourteen when she had her first and last abortion. She was fourteen when she started sleeping with a knife under her pillow. She was fourteen when her father tried to sneak into her room and she stabbed him in the eye. He lived; Colette was in the hospital for two weeks- fell down the stairs, her mother said. When she came back, her father stopped coming into her room.
Colette was fifteen when she went to her first funeral. She was fifteen when her father was killed by a bullet that was lodged in his head. She was fifteen when her mother went to prison for life for his murder- one look at Claudette’s rotting teeth and arms covered in track marks and the jury couldn’t deliberate fast enough. She was fifteen when she had to keep the secret that still haunts her. She isn’t sorry that she took the shotgun off the wall and shot her father dead. She was sorry he was standing over her little sister when he fell over with a bullet blasted through his brain.
Two of her older brothers were over eighteen, but both of them were serving time when the rest of the children were left without any sort of parent to speak of. Colette and her siblings were ready to fight tooth and nail to force that state’s hand and let them all stay together. Fortunately for the Young siblings - or unfortunately depending on one’s view - child protective services in bumfuck were lack luster to say the least. No one wanted to waste the time or resources on children who would likely end up in prison and someone else’s problem sooner or later. Colette and her twin brother, Carl, were the ones to carry the family and take care of the younger siblings. Carl immediately dropped out of high school, but Colette attempted to stay for another year. Eventually she had to drop out to work full time. As far as her employers at Legs knew, Colette was well over eighteen, though most people knew that the eldest Young daughter was barely sixteen.
When she was offered a job at Snake ‘n’ Jake’s, she was more than willing to leave her job at Legs. The MC set her goddamn teeth on edge but working with limp dicked bible thumpers who got off on calling her a whore when they only lasted twelve seconds was making her go out of her goddamn mind. Colette never had the longest fuse when it came to… well, anything- she much preferred to come out fists swinging instead of taking shit endlessly. She figured that working with drunken patrons would be a slight step up from working at Legs. It takes every ounce of her self control not to crack a bottle of beer over the patrons’ heads but she’s managed so far. She hates how much the bar, or rather who owns it, feels so familiar to her. The guns, the drugs, the white supremacy- reminded her of daddy dearest and her brothers. As much as she hates her job, it’s not as though she can quit, or get fired- there’s not much employment options for a high school drop out without a GED or much anger management to speak of.
3-5 factoids  ⟨⟨ these can be as simple as a few of their favorite movies and colors, to something more complex that you feel fleshes out your character  ⟩⟩ →
i. She grew up with a father that was very handsy, to put it politely. People, especially men that are much larger than her, touching her sets her teeth on edge. Most of the time, she would unload her glock into their skull, but at work, she is unable to do so. That doesn’t stop the thought from entering her mind everytime an MC gets a bit to close. Her patience has never been that impressive, and it’s wearing thinner and thinner as time goes on.
ii. Colette wouldn’t say she has a vendetta against the church, but she sure as fuck doesn’t believe in their God. As a child, she and her mother would attend every Sunday service and she would pray every week to God above to save her from the awful monster that was inside her daddy. And she never felt any relief. As an adult, she is incredibly bitter about the church and any who place their faith in the old building- or the crook who preaches there. Colette is thankful that most of those high and mighty bible thumpers stay the fuck out of her bar. On the rare occasion that one of them stumble into a seat before her, she maintains composure enough to allow them to come to confession over cheap whiskey.
iii. Despite working for the MC, Colette is positively disgusted with the views the club has about… literally everything. Everything they spew is literal bullshit. She’s lived in bumfuck just as long as the rest of them, and she knows exactly how hateful this town is. She doesn’t agree with any of it, and she’s fairly certain that at least one of the member have caught her snickering at their dated ideals. She’s been able to brush it off, batting her eye lashes and flattering them with compliments until they dropped it. Colette knows she needs to get her mouth under control, for her own safety and stability. She might think all of them are fucking idiots that she doesn’t agree with but she happens to agree with living and having a stable income, thank you very much.
iv. She wouldn’t say that she is an avid defender of the second amendment but she is damn sure that she’s not going to get hurt because some cousin fuckin’ good ole boys come in and decide to test her. Because of this, Colette is always armed. Always. She always has her knife attached to her thigh and she keeps a gun underneath the bar at work. Every room in her house has at least one firearm, though all of them are hidden from the house’s other occupants.
v. Colette and those of her siblings that aren’t incarcerated live in their childhood home. Plenty of her siblings and cousins pass through the house when they’re out on bail, and are welcome to stay as long as they follow Colette’s rules namely - ‘you touch one of my kids and they will never find your body’ - but she is the oldest permanent occupant. As such, she currently resides in the old master bedroom, formerly owned by her parents. There are still bullet holes in the walls and there’s a stink of meth that a decade couldn’t waft out but she prefers it to the time that she had to share her bedroom with three or more people.

4x02 Recap - Heavy Lies the Crown (The 100)
This was a quality episode. It’s not gonna jump on to my all time faves list, possibly because pretty much everything was spoiled beforehand (can’t wait to be past the screener eps, honestly), but it was some high calibre shit.
Warning: I am in a foul and irritable mood. If this recap is saltier than usual, I apologise. Unless you like salt, in which case - I did it especially for you!
Onwards...
- NOTE: They fixed Zach’s name in the credits. My question is, how the hell was that mistake ever allowed to happen. My god.
Anyway...
Radioactive, Radioactive
- The butterflies are back! I am HERE for throwing back to the S1 radioactive imagery. Could it be that we will see random dude from S2 again at some point? A GIRL CAN DREAM.
- So this whole opening sequence was seriously rad. We got to see ALIE again. Who knew that would excite me so much (Erica’s performance is just so damn good), we got to hear Tree Adam’s awesome soundtrack again, and we got a pretty brilliant introduction to Ilian. I gave exactly zero shits about RILEY later on in the episode, but I am instantly a fan of this dude.
- I also think it’s worth pointing out that his trauma must be EXTREME. He murdered his family. Yes, he wasn’t in control. But he can remember every damn moment. I doubt he will remain an antagonist forever, but I can’t say I blame him for being seriously fucked up and needing to expel that fucked up ness through violence and rage.
LET’S TALK KABBY
- THIS WHOLE SCENE WAS WONDERFUL.
- It’s legit pretty rad that an older couple get to have proper on screen sexy times on a ‘teen’ show. Kudos! It’s hawt.
- Paige Turco’s legs. Damn.
- ‘You are a terrible influence’ has me asking SO MANY QUESTIONS. I WANT TO SEE MISCHIEVOUS KANE PLEASE. THE KANE THAT OPERATES WHEN HIS CHILDREN AREN’T AROUND TO SEE HIM ACTING ANYTHING LESS THAN WISE.
- ALSO when Abby said Roan was expecting her...was I the only one whose mind swept off into an AU where Abby is like...the king’s wife, but she’s getting it on with one of his most trusted Ambassadors and it’s a tale of star crossed lovers and... @kane-and-griffin SURELY YOU WENT THERE?
- Kane’s smile while she has her back to him is just lovely.
- AND THEN the whole interaction with the necklace is just wonderful. Abby will never stop loving Jake, she will never stop missing him. But she is allowed to move on. Knowing that won’t stop her feeling guilty though, at least for a little while. Her hesitation is true to real life, and Kane’s gentle understanding is absolutely exquisite. He is not at all fazed by the spectre of her dead husband, to the point that he does not hesitate to help her put the necklace back on. And Abby does not express her gratitude with words, but with a kiss - her own gentle reminder to him that despite that guilt that is impossibly to not feel, she knows that she wants him. That she wants this.
The T Kru
- So we check in with the new peeps. We have the leader who is alllll about taking out King Roan. I think it’s important to note Ilian pointing out that he only wants revenge against Skaikru, and not the king.
- HEY LURKING LURKER WHO MIGHT YOU BE?
- Just kidding, it is clearly Octavia and I am about to be controversial...are you ready?
- Yes, Octavia looks like a badass, and angel of death, a vixen ready to get a mixen. HOWEVER...isn’t the point of an assassin meant to be that they are inconspicuous? If she wants to fade into the background and eavesdrop on conversations...if she wants her identity to remain secret for more than two minutes...shouldn’t she dress like everybody else? The cape is stunning but also....VERY UNIQUE COMPARED TO EVERYTHING ELSE WE HAVE EVER SEEN ON THIS SHOW.
- ANYWAY nobody notices her REALLY UNIQUE CAPE and Octavia learns vital information. The T Kru are going to challenge Roan to combat. Which, normally might be sweet, but Roan was shot - remember?
- God, I hate that crown. FREE ZACH’S BROW 2K17.
- ‘Now that the lift has been repaired’ AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA *wheezes* Okay, show.
- I just want to point out that Octavia is still wearing Niylah’s clothes. JUST POINTING IT OUT LEAVE ME ALONE.
- Octavia has continuous smug face going on this season and I love it. Echo, perhaps, is not such a fan.
- ‘You’ll lose. Lexa kicked your ass...’ ROAN’S FACE AHAHAHA. And Kane’s reaction is priceless too. I am living for a season of Octavia just straight talking 24/7.
- Roan, Octavia and Kane are a squad I can get behind. Kane is going to try for diplomacy...we’ll see how that goes...
ADVENTURE SQUAD ASSEMBLE
- Clarke’s look is fucking great, I love it so much. It is hints of S1 whilst also being fresh. I am a staunch defender of most of season 3. I think the overarching...arcs... were necessary and well placed. But lawwwwd it is nice to see Clarke back at home, and looking like Clarke again.
- This scene really nicely sets up the differing stances of Bravelarke. Nobody is right, nobody is wrong. The back and forth is really nicely done. It’s all very head, heart, and hands I must say.
- ‘A choice your dad died for’ RAVEN REYES, SLYTHERIN.
- Clarke’s expression and voice get super fierce here. It makes me so sad for her considering the end of the episode. So Raven is Jake, Clarke is Jaha, and Bellamy is Abby? I’m for it.
- The real MVP of this scene is Monty, and I love how he isn’t actively part of the conversation that the ‘leaders’ are having, but his mind is constantly working. While the others are going around in circles, Monty thinks up a solution.
- ‘We’re standing in our viable solution.’ The way they all look around at the Ark which was both salvation and prison for them, all hopeful and wide eyed...IDK my dudes, it gives me the heart feelings.
Checking in with the other delinquents...
- Something about Bellamy going to Miller and Bryan gives me feelings, mostly bc of the knowledge that Bellamy and Miller are BFFs. RIGHT.
- Bryan is recovering remarkably well. I somehow doubt you should ever base gunshot wound recovery times off of this show folks.
- Bryan gets more character in this episode than he has at any other point. Jonathan does a really fantastic job of portraying his trepidation, his anger, and his general level of irritation at Miller.
- I LOVE THE PIKE CONVERSATION. IT IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT. It’s also super important that what Octavia did is referred to as murder here. Last episode we had Clarke assure Bellamy that Pike had it coming. I think that was said, for the most part, to make Bellamy feel better. But this show is nothing if not fair when it comes to showcasing all sides of things. Pike was, in most respects, a hero and saviour to Bryan. And he was elected Chancellor, fairly. It’s not a simple situation.
- ‘To save you, Nate.’ I’m not hardcore Briller or anything, but the delivery here was spot on. Annnnnd I actually think super important in establishing Bryan’s character some more. We all know Bryan will be heading out the door sooner or later, but I still appreciate how the shows likes to give any and all characters depth.
- The hug and no kiss thing is...weird. There can be no denying.
- JASPER’S WHOLE SHOWER SCENE. I FORGET HOW GOOD DEVON IS AT COMEDY.
- MONTY’S APPALLED FACE.
- HONESTLY THOUGH. When Jasper says ‘Monty’ all serious and turns off the shower, I CACKLE. And then ‘look at me’ I’M TRYING NOT TO. BLESS YOU LOVELY CHILDREN.
- As things stand, I am loving where the show has taken Jasper post 4x01. And I’m intrigued to see where it goes.
- MAYBE MONTY DID GRAB THE WEED. IDK HOW OR WHEN. BUT MAYBE.
- Obviously the best part of this scene is THE JONTY HIGH FIVE. HUZZAH.
- ‘Hey, you wanna hug?’ *giggles*
ADVENTURE SQUAD ASSEMBLE
- MONTY AND RAVEN’S INTERACTION IS SO WONDERFUL. THEY’RE ALL LIKE TEAM BRAIN, AND THEN MONTY POINTS OUT RAVEN’S BOOM FETISH, AND THEN THE I GOT THIS AND THE SHOULDER PAT AND THE JOKE.
- I LOVE ALL OF THEM SO MUCH.
- Okay, so Bellarke. There is this super brief shot after Clarke hands over the whatever whing, where Bellamy looks away from her and she just STARES AT HIM YOU GUYS. HER FACE IS SO WARM AND FOND AND GLOWY. I’VE NOT SEEN ANYONE ELSE MENTION THIS MILLISECOND FRAME BUT IT’S EVERYTHING.
- I’m personally not of the opinion that Bob intentionally winked, I think it’s just a face thing. BUT THERE CAN BE NO DENYING THE CUTE. WHO KNEW THAT IF BELLARKE ACTUALLY GOT TO SPEND TIME TOGETHER THEY’D GO RIGHT BACK TO THE DORKY JOKES AND THE ADORING EYE SMILES.
- WHAT IS THAT SHOT OF MONTY AND HARPER WATCHING THEM.
- Bellamy is so...energised this season? I’m fully loving it. I’m sure his self loathing is absolute, but he’s channelling it in such a positive way since he got to unload at Pike in 3x16. Clarke doesn’t have that same energy though, and you can almost see more of her own seep away as she watches him leave.
- Also, another cute Raven and Monty nod. I POINT OUT ALL THE DETAILS OKAY. MAKE YOU READ ALL THE WORDS.
- That was a quick trip.
- The Marper hand hold is cute.
- Things go to shit pretty fast! Bellamy is all about making sure everybody else chills out in this episode. Even when he gets smacked upside the head, he is DEDICATED TO THE CAUSE.
- BELLAMY SPEAKING TRIG YO.
- It’s not my place to talk about in depth, but the casting of extras and small bits parts on this show feels remarkably diverse compared to literally everything else I watch.
- We get a clear indication that the Ice Nation are not particularly fond of their King.
- Personally...I don’t reallyyyyy get why they back down? But whatever. I guess the leader does at least slightly fear the king?
PRINCESS MECHANIC RISE
- Okay, so Raven having to do her first mini boss speech and feeling all awkward and overwhelmed is the start of what will end up being another amazing arc. I FEEL IT IN MY BONES.
- SINCLAIRRRRR. But we do at least see now why he kind of needed to die. Kabby must, obviously, be protected at all costs. However, this show very much is about the 100 (+ Raven and Bellamy). Raven has to rise to the occasion in his absence.
- This conversation between Raven and Clarke is EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. It reminds me so much of S1 and ‘I’d pick you first.’ GAH. Just seeing them working together, and supporting each other means so much. Neither of them really know what they’re doing, but they’re doing it anyway. MORE. GIVE ME MORE.
- Fucking Jaha.
- Okay, FINE. Jaha having actual relevance to main characters is infinitely more interesting than Jaha out on his own doing his own wild things.
- I LOVE RAVEN BRINGING UP THE WRIST THING, AND CLARKE FINDING THE STRENGTH WITHIN TO POINT OUT THAT JAHA WAS ALSO CHIPPED. But Raven is having NONE of that. Remember that Jaha, at ALIEs behest, zoned in on Raven. She was the key. He went after her, after her injury, preyed on her pain. No wonder she is seething. Jaha’s zen owning of all his crimes is...vaguely interesting, I guess.
- Sort the scrap you dumb dumb.
OH MY GOD, RILEY? RILEYYYY? IS THAT YOU?
- Even if preview articles and teasers hadn’t already given away what Bellamy’s choice would be, as soon as we saw that little girl we all know he was saving the slaves, right?
- The appearance of the slaves strikes me as entirely random and contrived though. Why would the Ice Nation have massacred so many of Farm Station if they had a legitimate use for them? Whatever.
- So, Riley! Definitely in to the idea of him and Bryan having a history together, and the two of them rowing off into some off screen happiness together later in the season. I’m sure, given time, Riley may grow on me. This show does a remarkable job of making me care about everyone. But at this point I feel nothing. I’m all in with Ilian, and intrigued by Kenza...Riley, not so much.
- Everything about Echo and Roan’s sparring is attractive. EVERYTHING.
- I’m sorry, but Abby is totally checking Roan out in all of her reaction shots. That, or she’s fantasising about Kane.
- ‘If you can’t help me, why the hell are you still here.’ That clearly influences Abby’s decision to leave later.
- So, I didn’t talk about Roan and Echo much earlier because I LOVE THIS SCENE HERE. I’m so intrigued by where the show is going with these two. It’s a huge deal that Roan trusts her with the radiation information. I suppose it might not be trust per se, perhaps more like necessity - but still! And I also think it means a lot that Echo seems truly dedicated to helping him. As was said in 4x01, she’s very loyal. It’s proving true so far.
- Echo at Arkadia. Now, that will be interesting.
Octavia, back at it again with the sass and the smirks.
- Kane makes a valiant attempt at diplomacy! He points out that while Arkadia might have helped spread the CoL, they also destroyed it and saved humanity.
- When that doesn’t work, Octavia employs an intimidating lead with some shit talking. Solid tactics, O.
- NIYTAVIA FOR LIFE...but in the meantime, we’re calling it Butterfly Assassin?
- ‘Well that went well.’ Kane’s look up at her is just like, DON’T.
- CLARKE MY LOVE. I AM SO SAD FOR YOU. HEAVY LIES THE CROWN INDEED. IT’S TOO MANY PEOPLE. SO MANY ARE GONNA DIE. DAMN THIS SHOW.
- I kind of adore that Clarke’s reaction to hearing music is DA FUQ IS THIS? NO TO MUSIC. NO TO JOY.
- I really enjoy the scene with Clarke and Jasper. You can still feel his anger at Clarke, but...I don’t know...there’s something different about it. I almost feel like Jasper has put aside his anger, and is just...shooting from the hip, rather than from grief? Clarke’s face breaks my heart when he points out how similar it all sounds to them being sent to the ground though.
THE BIG DECISION
- Okay, so first of all...I love that we got to hear everybody’s perspective. This was democracy at work and it wasn’t a decision Bellamy made alone. So we can put that narrative to bed now.
- Minty lives
- I’m actually not going to go in depth on the choice that Bellamy ultimately makes, because I can see both sides and I don’t think either is right or wrong. We don’t have to justify anything here. Yes, perhaps somewhere down the line the squad will realise that the generator really was their only option and the reality of his choice will crash down on Bellamy. But imagine that he had decided to leave the slaves, and then in two weeks time they found a gigantic underground bunker that could fit 10,000 people. He’d feel pretty shit about letting the slaves suffer then, right? The characters don’t know what the future holds, and they don’t have the benefit of knowing they are part of a narrative which ensures that some of them will at least survive.
- So, whatever basically. I’d have been cool with this going either way.
- Stoke that they saved Riley though, obviously.
- Important quote to note... ‘we have Raven.’ I, like Bellamy, believe that Raven Reyes can do anything - including make water out of nothing.
- Also worth noting how...incredibly risky their plan was? Like. Yikes.
- Harper kicking due in the face is my kink.
- MONTY IS SUPER GREAT IN THIS EPISODE. Everything about his reaction to meeting his dads murderer is just exquisitely well done. Leaving his death to the slaves is both powerful and also really quite dark.
Heavy Lies the Crown
- The Clarke/Jaha scene is so good and so hurtful to me.
- Fucking Jaha.
- Clarke referencing her father and being locked up is really important, but...so is the parallel to Jaha’s choices. Ugh. Everything he says is actually so on point, and you can see realisation that Clarke is seeing herself in Jaha is disgusting to her but also unavoidable.
- Back to Kabby. We saw Kane have absolute faith in Abby last episode, so it’s nice to hear her being so sure that he will figure something out (YES, IT’S ALL VERY BELLARKE I KNOW).
- Kane quickly figures out that Abby is going back to Arcadia (judging from the promo, she’s going to be needed). I’m excited for this because more Abby and Clarke, but also maybe some Clarke and Raven please? We get some more gloriously supportive stuff from Kane...
- And then Kane notices that Abby isn’t wearing her necklace! Upon first viewing, I didn’t pick up on the fact that this scene feels a bit cut up. I can see it on second watch, and I can understand that’s frustrating. That being said, I don’t think the scene loses its meaning? To me, the removal of her necklace is Abby’s way of saying she’s ready to move on and it’s her way of saying it to Kane without putting it into words.
- Prayer circle that Abby gives the rings to Clarke.
- LOOK AT HOW MUCH THAT CAPE STANDS OUT OKAY.
- So, I’m skipping straight to the murder. I FUCKING LOVE ITTTTTTTTTTT. I just...I’m so relieved that Octavia’s mudering is FOR her people, and not against. It makes so much sense.
- I can’t help giggling a little at Octavia being so ballsy about dueling these folk. THEY MIGHT ALL BE TONS BETTER THAN YOU, BABE. THEY’VE HAD YEARS TO PRACTICE. But whatever.
- Soooo the stabbing into the earhole to hide the wound and thus make it seem like he died of natural causes is BADASS.
- HEADCANON: Octavia did not learn this tactic on the ground. She learned it as a child when Bellamy was reading her some classic murderous fiction.
- ‘LONG LIVE THE KING.’ Nice.
- Kane is CONCERNED about his daughter’s MURDEROUS WAYS.
- Ilian has also figured it out.
- And Echo too seems suspicious. STICKING A PIN IN THAT FOR THE FUTURE.
Clarke, we have adopted more children
- So Briller are breaking up, and I can’t be mad at the show for it because Jonathan got a new gig and can’t commit (sound familiar, oooh I went there). I do hope that this time around they let him just disappear into the sunset. Learn from your mistakes show.
- Make sure he takes Riley with him.
- Again, kudos to Jonathan for this ep. He really brings it.
- RILEY RILEY RILEY YES WE KNOW THAT IS HIS NAME. STOP.
- Okay, so the scene where Riley and Clarke are revealed as old friends (I have zero romance fears here btw) is HILLARIOUS TO ME. It’s so blatantly shoe horned in. AS IF they would be reunited, hug, and then just...blah. Like...it’s so noodley?
- Anyway, Raven realises there is no generator and Bellamy fesses up to his maternal instincts.
- I actually love Clarke’s ‘you just did’. The delivery doesn’t imply blame to me, which is backed up by how immediately Clarke accepts his choice. It’s more a simple statement of fact, coming from a place of understanding.
- Raven, on the other hand, is pissed. ‘You’re not the only one who has to live with it. As usual.’ This is a direct throwback to Bellamy chucking the radio, right? That’s pertinent to their history. Look, Raven is a spitfire. She’s scared and under pressure, and she hasn’t had to make the leadership calls yet. She clearly will at some point this season, and we’ll see her gain a healthy dose of respect for Clarke and Bellamy when she does. For now, I think her anger is perfect.
- I know ‘no more than a 100′ is really on the nose but I LOVE IT SO SO MUCH. WHO’S GONNA MAKE IT YOU GUYS. AHHHH. MY SHOW.
- BRAVENLARKE FOR LIFE.
- CLARKE QUOTES JAHA AT BELLAMY AND SHE JUST LOOKS SO BROKEN ABOUT IT. My dear girl, you’ll be okay...somehow.
- Clarke is just the accepted leader of Skaikru now and I love it.
- TOGETHER. Looks at Bellamy. OF COURSE SHE DOES. Can we also talk about Raven’s heart eyes towards Clarke? I mean...they fade to ash pretty fast, but just for that moment it’s the purest of loves!
- So, Clarke lies, and just like Bellamy and the generator...I won’t call right or wrong. There is no answer, just a choice.
- ‘Your father would be so proud’ OUCH. OUCH. OUCH. Raven lashing out at Clarke here is much more personal than what she says to Bellamy. It’s more vicious. But I’m still not going to rail on her, for the same reasons as mentioned above. It’s time for her to get to work. I am so excited to see her in this role.
- And so Bellamy repeats ‘we save who we can save today’ and the important thing here is how Clarke nods. She’s not mad. She respects and understands his choice. Most of all she trusts him. Even if she CAN’T understand a choice he makes, she’ll always trust that it came from the right place. They’re a team.
- And to reinforce that, the episode ends with a glorious Bellarke shot as they contemplate what is to come.
- How many episodes will end with a Bellarke shot this season? I say 12/13.
- I AM SO VERY HYPED FOR NEXT WEEK.
My laptop is acting up and I’m as grumpy as a Clarke that hears music playing, so I’m not even re reading this. Apologies for typos. And congratulations if you made it to the end!
