Best toy neopets?
Toy is a newer colour, having been released in 2018 as the runner up of a "new colour" poll (so no UC/styled art to compare in this one). The original toy pet used in the poll, Lenny, seemed to be a good example of what to expect from the colour: plastic parts, bright colors, and maybe one or two minor changes to the anatomy where appropriate.
However, while some toy pets stick to the action-figure formula to varying degrees, some go off in completely different directions by being based on random specific real-world toys. On top of that, some of those pets are based on very specific brands (the iDog, Furbies, etc.) while some are just based on generic classic toy concepts.
This can also lead to problems regarding overlap with other colours; the toy Kougra, Lupe, and Bruce are all effectively just plushie Neopets, albeit in a very different style than the standard plushie colour.
I point this out because I feel like either a colour should be 100% coherent across all species, or it should vary wildly by species. Toy straddles this weird middle ground of being part licensed toys, part generic toys, and part action-figure toys where it simultaneously has coherency and no coherency at all. I feel like the best toy pets are the ones where they stick to the plastic-y look but manage to put a fun species-specific twist on it.
Favorite Species:
Mynci: Speaking of which, the toy Mynci is basically perfect in this respect; it keeps the hard jointed plastic look while also being based off the classic cymbal-playing monkey toy, which fits the 'pet for obvious reasons. The colors also look quite nice, and as an added bonus, the clothes are removable (though I do wish the base removed the out-of-place head hairs).
Gnorbu: This one falls into the "generic IRL toy" category, and while it's not the most coherent thing in terms of the overall colour (I'm hesitant to even think of a piñata as a toy), it's such a fun concept and it looks great. There's a lot of colors used but they're all balanced well, the concept reads super clearly, and the subtle inegration of thigns like the mane are just perfect. My sole nitpick is just that the black outlines on the eye look out of place, and something flatter to match the papier-mâché look would've been nice.
Jetsam: Based off a pool toy, this one kind of plays with the action-figure concept by keeping the plastic idea but not being hard plastic or jointed. It's perfect for a water-based Neopet, and the inflatable plastic is spot-on visually, complete with seams. Only issue with it is the weird handle on the side, which might be a thing with shark pool toys but isn't something I've ever seen in-person.
BONUS: The toy Bori takes a similar route to the Mynci, keeping the hard plastic idea but putting a twist on it by making the back plates into an xylophone, which is a fantastic concept. The multi-colored plates really draw attention to the concept and the rest the palette is a simple yellow with a few blue accents.
The only issue with it, and the reason it's a bonus, is that weird bone in its mouth. According to Jellyneo, it's based off a [checks notes] Toddlerz Toddlin' Tunes Puppy, which is just weird because Bori aren't dogs or even dog-adjacent. What was wrong with just making it a regular non-branded xylophone?
Least Favorite Species:
Koi: I absolutely love the idea of this being a bathtub wind-up toy; however, the problem is that the key, which should be the focal point, is so tiny and hard to see that I only noticed while doing this review that it's even there. Even putting that aside, there's way too many colors going on here, and the addition of stripes over the body is strange and does nothing but clutter the design. It's also strange that the back fin is a solid color and one piece while the tail is lobed and multi-colored; feels like those two should match.

Part 2!

Pora looked at the thin pole in fear. They couldn’t even balance normally, how were they supposed to balance on that with one foot? Mynci made it look so easy, but he had years and years of experience with balancing on all sorts of things. He jumped back down from the pole, grinning at the slave.
“Go on, you do it now.”
Their heart started beating even faster as they slowly approached the pole, it was higher then they thought. They pulled themselves up and stood on the top with one foot. It didn’t last long as they quickly lost balance and fell to the floor. Pain shot through their arm and they bit back a scream.
Mynci sighed in disapproval. Such a basic thing and they couldn’t even do it.
“That was hardly 5 seconds!,” He shook his head. “Next is trampoline jumping, you better not mess it up again.”
They groaned as they got back up. Trampoline jumping didn’t sound too bad, but of course he was going to make it hard for them. They hurried to catch up with him as he lead them to the trampoline. He went up first to show Pora how to do it, he did a series of acrobatic stunts, they had never even seen half of them before. They weren’t athletic at all, nor did they know how to copy what he did, but the punishment would be worse if they didn’t try.
So hesitantly they went up, silently praying they’d be able to do at least of the tricks. They actually managed a backflip, which was a win in their book, but their mind was already blank on the other things he had shown them. Surely he couldn’t see that they weren’t actually doing them with that blindfold on right? He always relied on hearing after all. They jumped around for another couple seconds before getting off.
“You failed yet again.” Mynci said.
“What? But I did it!”
He sighed and pulled the slave closer by their collar. “I’m not fucking stupid. I can tell you didn’t actually do it.” He let go of them. “I’ll punish you for lying later.”
Pora let out a shaky breath and silently followed him to the small stage. Behind the curtains there was a box with various balls, knives, torches, hats, cards and some other stuff he regularly used while performing for kids. He took out four of the small knives and casually strolled over to the middle. Then he started juggling them, and the slave could feel their heart drop to the ground.
“Ever learned to juggle, dear?” He smiled at the slave, showing too many teeth.
“No, sir.”
He stopped juggling and caught the knives in his hands. “Well in that case,” he handed them to Pora. “I hope you’re a fast learner. Try not to drop them, each knife you drop is another hour I’ll make you perform in front of an actual crowd.”
They were supposed to juggle knives? They shouldn’t have been surprised. That Mynci was sadistic was clear, but they never expected him to do something like this. They took a deep breath and tried to copy what he did, throw the knives in the air one by one and catch them, simple enough. One of the blades fell directly on one of their palms making them cry out in pain, the other knives clattered to the floor as well.
Pora was holding onto their wrist, desperately looking up at Mynci, hoping he’d help. He reached out and pulled the knife out of their hand, and they cried out again. Blood was pouring out, dripping to the floor.
“You dropped all of them, couldn’t even juggle 1, I’m very disappointed.” He sighed heavily and started to make his way out of the tent. “Go to your room. You have a long day ahead.”
The slave sobbed and stumbled off the stage, heading to the back room. They were pressing on the wound as hard as they could, trying to stop the bleeding at least a bit. Were they even going to survive? If they did, Mynci could probably just bring them back using his magic. They sat down in their corner and closed their eyes. They didn’t try to hold back tears, it was useless.
The sound of something being placed in front of them made them jump and look up. Val was staring at their hand with her big eyes, she had a first aid kit with her. She took some supplies out the kit and gently took their hand in hers. Taking a moment to inspect the wound, she poured disinfectant over it, then bandaged it up carefully. They made eye contact for a moment before she left just as fast as she came.
Pora looked at their hand trying to figure out what exactly just happened. Did Mynci send her? Maybe she heard the screams and just came to check. Either way, it felt nice to have human contact, contact that wasn’t intended to hurt them. They knew tomorrow was going to be filled with pain, they should rest and hope that the audience would be gently on them for once.
They woke up with a not so great start. First of all, they were inside a cage, one small enough to keep them on their knees. And secondly, they were inside a different tent by the looks of things. They’d seen the yellow and purple walls before, but never been inside. There was hay covering the floor outside the cage, some big buckets of water tucked in the corner and smaller buckets with food in the other. They assumed that this is where the horses stayed, at least during the night. But why were they here? What was going on?
Faint circus music was playing somewhere nearby, probably in the tent just next to it. They assumed they were doing a morning show with the horses. That didn’t explain much about why they were in there. The sound of crunchy footsteps made them look up.
“Hey sleeping beauty, took a nice nap? You can be quite the heavy sleeper, you know. Almost thought you were dead!” Kins laughed at himself, his voice echoed in the room.
They didn’t know how to respond and remained silent. He didn’t seem to bothered by it. The jester leaned against the wall and sighed.
”Things were nicer before you came here, honestly. Whenever Mynci got bored he’d come to me and ask me to tell him jokes, when he was frustrated he’d ask me to play my music..now he just goes to you instead,” he made eye contact with the slave, then turned around and started walking in circles. “Not to blame you, but I’m kind of blaming you. Anyway, Mynci said you’re gonna be part of the performance tonight, as punishment or something. Not sure how doing something so cool would be considered a punishment but whatever. You get to walk the tight ropes! It’s really fun, I’ve been practicing myself. Honestly you’re lucky you get to do the fun stuff and I don’t.”
He fell silent staring at the door for a couple seconds.
“Just be ready, that’s all I’m saying.” He muttered as he left at a fast pace.

Oof. The 8-Bit Mynci is pretty rough. It’s not as bad as some others (the Usul and Techo come to mind), and it’s more or less recognizable as a Mynci... but it’s still absolutely terrible for a variety of reasons. As a reminder, Myncis are supposed to look like this:
The biggest issue is, as usual, the color choices and shading. For some reason, they keep using black outlines and colored outlines at random. You could look at the Mynci and say, “well, the outline on the body is black, but the clothes are removable, so it’s not actually random”... but guess again, the outline on its tail is green, and I’m pretty sure that’s not meant to come off.
I’ve seen a lot of weird, bad shading in the 8-Bit pets since JS took over, but this is one of the worse. The shading is just... completely symmetrical, with one side as the shade and the other as the highlight. It’s nonsense, and looks worse than flat colors would. The weirdest bit is where the shade and highlight meet at the bottom of the pants... what even is that? It makes it look like the pants come to a point there, or something. Really weird.
They’ve also done the arbitrary-overuse-of-colors thing that tends to crop up a lot in these designs. If you look at the face, particularly on the ears and eyes, you’ll see that they’ve used quite a few different shades of yellow... for what purpose, I can’t even imagine. In any case, it doesn’t look very good.
My version uses softer colors (all NES palette except for the yellow on the face), with more accurate features to the best of my abilities and resolution-permitting. The eyes aren’t perfect, but there’s just not enough detail at this size to pull off the shape without the Mynci looking angry. It’s a definite improvement over the Peter Lorre eyes of the original, though.
I feel like a broken record at this point, but JumpStart could absolutely be making significantly better 8-Bit pets with just a little more effort. Obviously they would need someone who knows and cares what they’re doing, but what you’re looking at right now is just a series of fairly minor adjustments. Please, JS, just find someone who has even a little experience with pixel art.

Can you do a moehog review? I feel loke they are one of those forgotten pets that don't get a lot of attention
Moehogs are one of those pets that pretty much just fall into the "regular animal" category, along with pets like the Lupe and the Mynci. In this case, they're more-or-less warthogs, with the only real differences being a mohawk-style mane and a few stripes. Their name would imply that the mohawk is supposed to be their main feature, but it's so small and non-descript that it really doesn't make them stand out at all. I would've loved to see the Moehog actually rocking a super tall mohawk, really leaning into that punk look to help it stand out a bit more.
One thing that I really do like about Moehogs though is their expression. I don't know why, but they always just seemed so chill and happy compared to other Neopets. They would 100% ask you how your day went and genuinely want to know the details.
Color-wise, the default Moehog has an orange mane, which looks a bit out-of-place (though less so on the yellow one). I feel like the mane either needed to be black to match the hooves and stripes, or have all three be a darker version of the base color.
The Moehog has basically remained completely unchanged via conversion except for a few shading tweaks and the odd decision to move the back foreleg up.
Favorite Colours:
Halloween: I'm not usually that big on the Halloween pets that look like they're just wearing costumes, but the UC/styled Halloween Moehog is absolutely fantastic. Not only is the Dr. Sloth concept great, but the post and expression are all fantastic, as is the dull green, black ,and red palette.
The converted version is... okay, I guess, but you should be able to see the inside of the cloak from this angle, especially because the loss of it results in the color palette losing the much-needed red. Also, the far right eye is really jacked up for some reason.
Darigan: The converted Darigan Moehog is honestly really boring and it wouldn't even be on this list if not for the fact that the UC/styled version absolutely slaps. The body shape has been adjusted to make it look far more bulky and threatening, and there are some really nice tweaks there as well, such as making the mane run all the way down the body to the tail, adding stripes to the legs to match the ones on the back, and changing the ear shape. I'm not usually big on the more muted-looking Darigan pets, but it works well for the Moehog given the warthog inspiration.
Island: The island Moehog really goes the extra mile all around. The white, tan, and green palette looks very nice and is complimented by a op of red with the flowers. I love how the usual stripes are seamlessly integrated directly into the tan markings, and how the grass skirt and bracelets match the green mane—not to mention things like the shell necklace and earrings, which didn't need to be included but are much appreciated. By far the best detail are the tusks, which have a super subtle carved look to them.
BONUS: The chocolate Moehog has banana tusks and this delights me. That is all.

Please note: (First, I’m tired and this is very ramble-y and repetitive) These decks came with a stack of 10 cards from the original TCG set. 40 cards were part of the decks themselves. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm which cards were not supposed to be included in the deck. There is a chance that the stack of ten cards included with each deck was the same for every deck that was sold, however I have no way of verifying this. This set was frustrating due to them including base set cards in the items purchasable from the set.
