*****************************************************************************************************
The Avengers. ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’. The world feels safer knowing that there are people out there, human and mutant alike, who are willing to risk their lives everyday to keep the world safe from those looking to wreak havoc. The people on the team are unbelievably strong and brave.
Tony Stark: Iron Man. Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist.
Bruce Banner: Hulk. A being fierce, strong, and capable of mass destruction, housed by a man with seven PhD’s.
Thor Odinson: God of Thunder. Incredibly attractive, incredibly strong, and incredibly personable.
Steve Rogers: Captain America. A super soldier with a huge heart, fighting to do the right thing.
Natasha Romanoff: The Black Widow. Not a superpowered human, but you would think it with the way she can take down an army of men all in one breath.
Clint Barton: Hawkeye. He NEVER misses a shot.
As the years went by, the members on the team increased, only bringing in more incredible individuals.
Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier. Cap’s best friend. Another super soldier, who also literally has an arm made out of vibranium.
Wanda Maximoff: The Scarlet Witch. Arguably the strongest being in existence. Capable of killing a man with the flick of her wrist.
Sam Wilson: The Falcon. Served in the military where he found a way to literally fly.
Yelena Belova: Black Widow’s sister. Beautiful, but deadly, she can kill a man while still looking stunning. Then again, you’re a bit biased.
Kate Bishop: Hawkeye’s Protege. Witty, intelligent, a fabulous archer, and also incredibly gorgeous.
And then there was you. The team healer. That was your power. You could heal any living thing except for yourself. Some may say it’s fabulous, but ultimately there’s no use for it in the field. For the most part, you wait at the compound, or stay on the Quinjet in case of injuries. You had basic defense training in case of being thrown into the field, but nothing nearly as intense as your teammates who actually made appearances on missions. And seeing as you were rarely seen on the field, there was no need for the world to know your name. To know you existed.
You’ve struggled with accepting your powers for the longest time. When you first discovered them, you were thrilled. You had always been practically invisible. Your parents focused all their energy on your brothers and sisters, leaving you in the dust. You didn’t have any friends, or anyone to look out for you. You were raised with the mentality that no matter what, you would never be good enough for your parents. But then suddenly, you had an ability that nobody else had. An ability that made you superpowered, incredible, if you will. But when you revealed it to your parents, rather than be excited for you, or proud of you, they were disgusted, and threw you out. Your abilities were too much for them.
Then Nick Fury found you, and invited you to join the Avengers. And upon training with them and getting to know the team, you couldn’t help but feel like you weren’t enough, Your powers weren’t enough. You were subpar.
But there were two girls in your life who made you feel like you were enough. And their names were Yelena Belova and Kate Bishop.
Upon joining the team, you became close with the two, and after months of harboring feelings for them, shoving them deep down because you saw no possibility of them being reciprocated, the two approached you one day and asked you out. You three had been going strong ever since.
The two treated you like a princess. Not a day went by where you weren’t showered with kisses and affection. You had never felt so special in your life. The three of you were as thick as thieves, always sticking together, always expressing your love for one another. You felt at home with the two women; you felt like you finally belonged. And when you shared that with them, they informed you that you would always have a home with them.
But there were times where your insecurities still seeped through. Where your mind was plagued with doubts revolving around your spot on the team, and if you really made an impact or not. And sometimes things happened to amplify those insecurities.
The team had been assigned a mission in Russia. It would be a simple mission, just checking up on an old Hydra base to make sure it truly was abandoned. All hands on deck because it was more of a closure mission. They got to finally ensure that Hydra was gone for good. You were informed that you should remain back at the compound, as injuries for this mission were unlikely.
You stood in the loading area, watching as your teammates all loaded up the Quinjet and prepared to leave.
“Hey, beautiful!” You immediately knew who the voice belonged to and smiled as Kate kissed you on the cheek.
“Hi, my love,” you replied. “Be safe out there, okay? I can only heal the living.”
“Don’t worry, she’ll make it back in one piece. Because I’ll be there ensuring she doesn’t do anything stupid. I’m cool like that.” Yelena came up behind the two of you and placed a kiss on your other cheek.
Kate rolled her eyes playfully. “Okay, I’m not the one who literally jumps off of buildings.”
Yelena laughed. “Me jumping off of buildings simply makes me even cooler.”
You smiled at their antics, grabbing both of their hands and squeezing gently.
“We leave in five minutes! Get your asses on the jet!” Natasha called out and your smile wavered.
You girlfriends noticed of course. They always did.
“Lyubov? You alright?” Yelena asked, tucking some stray hairs behind your ear.
You sighed. “Yeah, I just wish there was more I could do to help.”
Kate frowned. “Babe, you do so much for the team already. You being here ready to heal whoever needs help is helping us more than you could ever know. You’re essential to the team.”
“And you’re essential to our team,” Yelena said, kissing your temple softly.
You nodded, your insecurities taking the backseat for a bit. “Thank you. I love you both so much,” you said with a smile.
“We love you, malyshka. We’ll see you soon, alright?” Yelena stepped in front of you and kissed you softly.
“Yelena, don’t hog her,” Kate whined when the two of you pulled away. Yelena laughed, stepping to the side, giving Kate a chance to get a kiss of her own. She smiled at you once she pulled away.
“But yes. We love you. We will be back before you know it.”
You nodded, smiling at the two. “Okay. Be safe.”
The three of you stood in silence for a moment before-
“Belova! Bishop! Asses on the jet!” Clint shouted.
“Coming!” Kate yelled back before turning to you and smiling. “Bye, y/n, see you soon.”
Yelena nodded. “See you soon, detka.”
“See you soon, girls.”
*****************************************************************************************************
That night, you felt uneasy. You were the only one in the whole enormous compound. All the agents and workers had gone home for the night, leaving only you to occupy the space. And something felt off.
You couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was, of course. You didn’t have spidey senses, or any ability to see danger coming from a mile away. But you couldn’t escape the gut feeling that something was very, very wrong.
You tried to shove it away, focusing on cleaning up the medbay, getting it ready for whenever the team got back. You hadn’t realized just how late it had gotten until you checked your phone to see the time 2:00am staring right back at you. You sighed and began making your way out of the medbay, that off feeling hitting you full force. You figured that checking with Friday wouldn’t hurt anything.
“Friday, are all the doors locked?”
No response.
“Friday? Are you there?”
Nothing.
You felt as if your heart plummeted to your stomach at the lack of response. Friday was down. This was bad. Really bad.
“Shit,” you muttered under your breath before making a beeline for Tony’s lab to try and get her back up.
You rounded the corner and bumped into something. Someone. You looked up and froze. You had no idea how, seeing as the team had been fairly certain that Hydra was gone for good, but Hydra agents were in the compound. And you were face to face with one right now. As stated earlier, you had basic defense training, but nothing near the requirements to be on the field, so you weren’t sure how long you would last.
You went to back up, only to be grabbed by another agent. He held you firmly no matter how much you squirmed. You knew you couldn’t let them take you without a fight. You took a deep breath and tried to remember your training. You smacked the back of your head into your captor’s nose, hearing a sickening crack along with a groan of pain. At his weakened grip, you broke free, and attempted to make a run for it. You didn’t make it very far before a hoard of agents came your way. You fought as well as you could, throwing punches and kicks left and right, but ultimately, you were outnumbered. Eventually, they got the upperhand and you were injected with an unknown substance before your world went dark.
*****************************************************************************************************
When you opened your eyes, you had no clue whatsoever where you were. You were the only one in the room. You went to rub your head to ease the pounding there, but quickly realized that you were chained to the floor. You scanned the room for any inhuman threats and found none. You could only hope that your girlfriends and the rest of the team would be able to find you. But Hydra was very good at the whole hidden base game, so you weren’t feeling fabulous about your odds.
Your head snapped up at the sound of a cart being wheeled into the room. And then you saw him.
“Rumlow?”
“Oh, good. You’re finally awake. Nice to meet you, Y/N Y/L/N,” He said with a smirk.
“How are you still alive? You were killed in Lagos,” you said in disbelief.
“So you all thought,” he said with a scoff. “Little did you know that in all my time working behind Shield’s back with Hydra, I received a modified version of the super-soldier serum. Still, I was seriously injured, but I made it out. And made it my goal to make you all pay.”
You took a deep, shaky breath. “How do-”
He cut you off. “How do I know who you are? I have my ways. I found my way into the system, found the files. Clearly someone wasn’t important enough to include on the team publicly, hm?”
You shook your head, your brows furrowed. “No, that isn’t-”
“Isn’t it, though? Sure, you could use the excuse that they keep you a secret to keep you safe, but personally, I call bullshit. I think you just aren’t good enough to make the cut.”
You frowned, blinking away tears at his cruel words.
He laughed at your weakness. “Did you really think you mattered to them? You’re nothing. They probably won’t even come looking for you. You might as well cooperate.”
“Cooperate?”
“You, kid, are gonna tell me everything you know about the Avengers.”
You laughed with what little courage you had left. “Fuck no.”
He rolled his eyes before throwing a punch across your jaw. Tears stung at your eyes at the unexpected pain and the taste of blood in your mouth, but you willed yourself to stay strong.
“Should we try that again?” He sneered at you, crouching down and getting right in your face.
You spat in his face, glaring at him. You may have been terrified out of your damn mind, but you refused to give this asshole information to hurt your girlfriends and your team. No. Your family. Even if he was right; even if they really didn’t give a damn about you.
He stood up, wiping the combination of your blood and saliva from his face before looking down at you.
“Fine, then. We’ll get you to break. I have my ways of persuasion,” he said with a laugh. “Come on in, boys. Do your worst. Get the bitch to tell us everything she knows.”
As he walked out, a group of at least twenty Hydra soldiers walked into the room, all sporting evil smirks and no sign of remorse for what they were about to do.
You braced yourself for the worst.
*****************************************************************************************************
You weren’t sure how long you had been there. Several days, at least. That much you were sure of. Another thing you were sure of? They would have to kill you before getting a word out of your mouth. But you knew they were willing to, and that terrified you more than you’d like to admit. You spent your nights willing your mutation to adapt and heal yourself, but to no avail.
And when that didn’t work, you found yourself drowning in a world of physical and emotional pain. Your body was littered with gashes and bruises, some far worse than others. You were certain that your ribs were broken, likely your nose too. Not to mention the fact that you hadn’t been given food or water since being taken. You were fading fast.
And emotionally? You weren’t doing much better. You felt guilty. Guilty for not being strong enough to fight off the men. Guilty for not being able to heal yourself. Guilty at the thought that the team would have to risk their lives to rescue you, if they even bothered. You felt so weak, so useless, you didn’t see a reason that they would find the risk of rescuing you worth it. You wished you had been good enough for them. For your teammates. For your girlfriends. You always had to choke back a sob at the thought of your girlfriends. They had always been so good to you, even when you felt like you didn’t deserve it. They were so good, so brave, so strong, so loving. And you were just you. You could never measure up. You figured maybe they would be alright. You knew they loved you. That you didn’t question. But whether or not you felt as though you deserved their love? A whole other story.
You felt like you were falling apart, metaphorically and literally.
The sound of the door opening echoed through the room, waking you from your thoughts. You assumed another day had passed, but then you heard a gasp.
And as cliche as it may sound, you knew that gasp.
That was the gasp you heard when you were making a certain someone’s favorite dinner and she walked in and saw it. That was the gasp you heard when you hit a plot twist in a movie you were watching. That was the gasp you heard when a certain brunette found a trick arrow that she thought was lost forever.
That was Kate’s gasp.
Your eyes widened at the sound and immediately flooded with tears as she sprinted over to you while all but screaming “She’s in here!”
She dropped her bow and crouched down to your level and held your face in her hands.
“Kate,” you said brokenly, your voice coming out raspy from lack of use.
Her own eyes filled with tears as she took in your broken form. “Hi, baby,” she said, giving you a broken smile. “We’re gonna get you out of here, okay?”
You nodded as she turned her attention to the chains around your wrists, picking her bow back up and grabbing two arrows from her quiver. She stood up and shot the chains on each wrist, effectively breaking their hold on you.
“Y/N!” Another voice shouted, and your favorite blonde came into view, a heartbreaking look on her face as she, too, realized the state you were in.
“Lena,” you whispered, letting out a sob as she rested her forehead against yours.
Kate nudged Yelena. “We have to get out of here, Lena. Steve said we have about five minutes before they close in on us.”
Yelena nodded. “I’m going to pick you up now, lyubov, alright? It’s going to hurt, but I have to.”
She lifted you up bridal style and you let out a sob.
“I know, baby, I know. We’re gonna take you home, just try to stay with us, okay?” Kate said, concern evident in her voice.
“I’m so sorry,” you sobbed out. “I’m so sorry.”
And with that, you passed out.
*****************************************************************************************************
You woke up to pain all over, and a weight in both of your hands.
When you regained consciousness, you noticed two things. The beeping of a heart monitor, and a weight in both of your hands. You opened your eyes to see your two favorite girls on either side of you.
“Hey, pretty girl,” Kate said softly, brushing some hair out of your face gently.
“How are you doing, detka?” Yelena asked.
“I feel like I got hit by a truck,” you said with a groan.
“Respectfully…you look a bit like it too.”
“Kate!” Yelena scolded.
“What? I said ‘respectfully’!”
You laughed at the two girls.
“Let me get you some water, love,” Yelena said after a moment, getting up and going to the sink to fill up a paper cup. You smiled at her thoughtfulness.
But your smile fell and your brows furrowed when you noticed a small gash on Kate’s eyebrow. Kate watched your hand go up towards her injury and immediately smacked it away.
“Y/N!” She scolded, causing Yelena to turn her head towards you two. “Absolutely not. You are in no condition to heal others right now.”
Yelena raised her eyebrows. “You were trying to heal? In your condition?”
You sighed. “It was just a small cut, it really wouldn’t be straining-”
“Enough. No healing until you’re healed. Understand?” Yelena said sternly, handing you the cup of water.
“There goes the only thing I’m good for,” you mumbled under your breath. But they heard.
“That’s bullshit,” Kate said bluntly.
“Kate Bishop!” Yelena scolded, but Kate shook her head.
“No! It is!” She stood up from her chair and began to pace around the room. “I don’t know what lies they filled your head with to the point where you feel this way, or felt like you had to apologize when we rescued you, but it’s such bullshit! You, Y/N Y/L/N are the literal love of our lives. We would do anything for you. We searched for you day and night and barely got any sleep in the week you were gone, because we were so desperate to find you. You are beautiful. You are strong. You are incredible.” She finished her rant with a huff, sitting back down in her chair and running a hand through her hair.
“Okay,” Yelena started, breaking the silence that came over the room following Kate’s rant. “That was…a lot…but she’s right. What’s been going through your head that you would say that?”
You sighed. “I feel like I’m incapable of holding my own. I’m not strong enough to be in the field with you, and you’re all extremely good at what you do, so it really isn’t too often that you need healing. It seems to be the only thing I’m good at. Rumlow said you were keeping me a secret because I wasn’t good enough to make the cut of being on field and being known. And I know that’s not true, but it just kinda got to me. And if I can’t heal, or you don’t need healing, then I just worry that one day, maybe you’ll realize that you don’t need me.”
Yelena took your hand in hers and kissed it softly. “Sweet girl. Your feelings are completely valid. That being said, you are more than capable of holding your own. You had to take on over twenty men at the tower. Nobody blames you for not winning. That’s too much for any of us to take on by ourselves too. And as for your powers. First off, I don’t think we will ever stop needing your powers. They’re more extraordinary than you give yourself credit for. But, hypothetically, if we did-”
“We will always need you,” Kate cut in.
Yelena scowled at her and Kate shrugged. “You were taking too long to get to the point.”
Yelena rolled her eyes. “As Kate here so rudely interrupted me to say, we truly will always need you. No matter what your abilities are. Because you are the most loving, kind, considerate, funny woman we have ever met. And we love you, very very deeply.”
“And as for being kept a secret, does it bother you sweetheart?” Kate asked gently.
You shrugged. “I guess I just wish that people could know that I do things too? And I know that probably sounds selfish…”
Yelena furrowed her brows. “That doesn’t sound selfish at all, love. You do so much for this team. You have every right to want to be recognized for it. Kate and I have a debriefing tonight. Do you want us to bring it up?”
You smiled shyly. “I would like that.”
Kate leaned over and pressed a kiss to your cheek, causing you to giggle. “Well then, your wish is our command.”
You smiled at the two, nothing but love and adoration in your eyes. “Thank you both. And thank you for rescuing me.”
“There is absolutely no need to thank us. We will always come and get you. We love you unconditionally, honey,” Kate said.
“I know you two have a briefing to go to in a little bit, but could you sit with me for now?” You asked hesitantly.
Yelena smiled. “Of course. We would never miss a chance to hold our girl.”
Her and Kate got on either side of you, being extremely gentle and mindful of your injuries. Yelena wrapped  an arm around your shoulder and Kate wrapped an arm around your waist. You sighed contentedly, enjoying the peace. But of course you had to try your luck one more time.
“It really is such a small cut, Katie…”
“No way.”
“Not happening, lyubov.”
*
When you woke up the next morning, your girlfriends weren’t at your side, but there was a note on your bedside table along with your phone, which happened to be buzzing nonstop with notifications.
You checked the note first. It read:
The world knows who you are now. No more hiding. We are so proud of you and all you do for us. Katie and I are at training, but we will be back around noon, alright? We love you!
-Yelena (and Kate…she forgot to write my name down :/)
P.S.- The world gave you a nickname, an alias, if you will. Feel free to take a look ;)
You furrowed your brows and picked up your phone, immediately clicking on the Twitter headline of ‘The World Has a New Hero’. There was a video attached, a segment of a news broadcast, so you clicked play.
“This morning, Tony Stark called for an urgent press conference. He and the rest of the previously known Avengers were there to give us a huge piece of news.” The news reporter spoke.
A clip of the press conference was then shown.
“We have called you all here today, to let you know that there is someone on this team that we have not shared with the public,” Tony stated, and various murmurs were heard throughout the crowd. “Bishop and Belova, care to do the honors?”
Kate and Yelena stepped up to the podium hand in hand with enormous smiles on their faces.
“Now, as Avengers, we risk our lives daily. And while we are happy to do it, there are times where we get hurt. Do you ever wonder why we recover so quickly? And how we are able to get back up and out on the field so easily?” Kate said.
“We have a team member with the name Y/N Y/L/N. She has the ability to heal every living being other than herself. She is the reason we stay alive and safe. She protects us, in a way,” Yelena states.
“She’s been kept in the dark for so long for her own safety, but last night she expressed a desire to have her identity revealed. She does so much for us, and we genuinely would not be alive without her, so we agreed that the world needs to know her name,” Kate said.
“She will not be here today as she is currently in recovery due to an incident earlier this week. She is going to be okay, but she isn’t well enough to leave her hospital bed at the moment,” Yelena finishes.
Tony steps back up. “We hope you will accept Y/N with open arms, because she is part of our dysfunctional little family and we love her dearly. No questions will be accepted at this time, thank you.”
The clip ends and the news reporter comes back on screen. “Y/N Y/L/N is officially a part of The Avengers! Following this press conference, footage was released from the medbay of her in action, which has caught the public’s eye. It looks like she’s becoming a real fan favorite, very quickly. The public has started calling her ‘Soteria’, in reference to the goddess of safety and preservation from harm.”
You stopped the video and turned off your phone before smiling.
Soteria. You could live with that.
