When you think of Nubia: The Awakening by @clarenceahaynes and @omarepps, what is one word that comes to mind? Our word is Black, like dripped in melanin, African Diasporic cultural richness!! Get your copy at your local #library. If you love it (and you will!), we have copies available signed by Omar Epps. Link in bio: @SistahScifi | www.sistahscifi.com Images reposted from @mrsj.r NUBIA: THE AWAKENING I can’t start this review without mentioning the stunning and vibrant cover that first attracted me to this book featuring the art of @yung.yemi. It’s such a magnificent image which perfectly reflects the story within its pages. This book is a Afrofuturistic YA set in a dystopian New York that has been ravaged by climate change. The rich get to live Up High and continue to thrive while those left on the ground have to fight to survive. Working extremely hard to perhaps one day have the opportunity to join them for a better way of life. This is a powerful read that weaves important issues so relevant in society today into its fantasy coming of age story. Climate change, class issues, racism, drug use and poverty are just some of the hard hitting subject matters. As the protagonists discover they have emerging extra-ordinary powers it makes them question why and how best they should use them. They discover more about their ancestral past in the hope it will empower them to fight for their futures. This is a book that will help younger generations know that their voice matters and that they have the strength in them to make a difference. . . . . . . . . . #nubiatheawakening #yadystopian #yadystopianfiction #yafantasy #yafantasyseries #comingofagebook #scifibooks #afrofuturism #scififantasy #representationmatters #yareads #yareader #bookcommunity #bookstagrammer #amreadingyafantasy #supportblackauthors #climatechangeawareness #blackpantherfans #epicsaga #dystopianfiction #bookcoverillustration #omarepps #fridayread #weekendreading #ancestralhomeland #SistahScifi @penguinrandomhouse @getunderlined @delacortepress (at Sistah Scifi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnHhPkBLope/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy Wednesday! Yesterday, I was so exited to receive The Empress of Time by Kylie Lee Baker - a YA fantasy . It’s the conclusion to The Keeper of Night, which is a story about Reapers from many different cultures. There are Japanese gods and mythical creatures that are so interesting to explore. I just loved the first book, so I can’t wait to read the conclusion. (QOTD) The question today is a predictive. Just type the beginning of the sentence and let your device dictate the rest with its suggestions: My favorite mythical creature is ____. Here’s mine: My favorite mythical creature is a wonderful one. . . . . #allthebooksaug22 #theempressoftime #thekeeperofnight #kylieleebaker #htpbooks #inkyardpress #yafantasy #yafantasybooks #yafantasyseries #ya #yawritersofinstagram #yareader #yabooks #fantasyreaders #fantasyreader #fantasy #reading #readersofinstagram #reapers #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #books #booklover #bibliophile #bookaholic #bookstagram #bookaddict #booknerd #bookblogger #bookcommunity (at Lake Davidson) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChpJPp3rx8S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

𝗚𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀 #2) 𝗯𝘆 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝘂𝗳𝗺𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝘆 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗳𝗳 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Gemina revolves around main characters Hanna Donnelly- Heimdall station master’s daughter- and Niklas Malikov, a member of House of Knives gang, drug supplier on Heimdall- trying to save their lives and those on Heimdall from invasion by BiTech team. The story is about survival, courage, love, friendship, trust, betrayal, invasion, space warfare, and slimy alien creatures. This is immersive, mind-blowingly brilliant and super fast paced science-fiction, the best sequel I ever read and… you should just read this. Check out 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 in this book 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗶𝗰. Book Notes: Warrior Girl Unearthed
Tumblr media
You know how it feels when you read a book that comes out of nowhere and you’re totally blown away? And then that author comes out with their second book and you both really, really want to read it and you’re also afraid it won’t live up to the experience of the first? That was me with Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley. I’d listened to Boulley’s first novel, Firekeeper’s Daughter, and I loved that it was so different from anything I’d read before. The audio book gave me an aural experience of the Anishinaabemowin language that I certainly wouldn’t have had just by reading the book. It was so many things at once — a crime novel, a bittersweet romance, a coming of age story of a young woman with a foot in two very different cultures, trying to reconcile what she can, let go of what she can’t. It was beautiful and heartbreaking and informative without being preachy. So when Warrior Girl Unearthed came out this month, I felt an internal hesitation before opening it up. One night I decided to just read a chapter or two, see what I thought. The next thing I knew I was half way through the book.
You don’t need to have read Firekeeper’s Daughter to enjoy Warrior Girl Unearthed, but it is set ten years later in the same community. Our protagonist, Perry Firekeeper-Birch, is the young cousin of Daunis Fontaine, the central character of Firekeeper’s Daughter. Perry is all set to have a summer of slack in 2014, but an incident with a bear, her car, and a metal fence leaves her in debt to her Aunt Daunis, who signs her up for the last spot in the Kinomaage Summer Internship program. Perry is assigned to work with Cooper Turtle, the supervisor of the tribal museum, and through his mentorship begins to learn about the ancestral remains languishing in universities and museums (despite laws requiring their cataloging and repatriation to the tribes they belonged to). Perry’s sense of justice is kindled and then put to the test as she learns the extent to which artifacts are being withheld from their original tribes. In the meantime, women from the community are going missing and Perry doesn’t want to be next.
This was just as compelling a read as Firekeeper’s Daughter. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. And, like with Firekeeper’s Daughter, Angeline Boulley is a master at giving the reader a window into Perry’s life as a mixed Native and Black young woman — life within the tribal community of Sault Ste Marie and Sugar Island — and the weighty history that each person carries with them. I felt like I learned alongside Perry about the history of ancestral remains and the efforts of tribes to repatriate the bones and the cultural materials of their people. I felt Perry’s frustration at the way in which people and institutions refuse to respect those bones and artifacts. Boulley includes a list of resources at the end so the reader can dive deeper into the original materials Cooper assigns Perry to read in the book. And the book itself is gorgeous, with a cover designed by Caldecott winner Michaela Goade (We Are Water Protectors). Island Books also has a limited supply of beautiful page overlays from Goade to enjoy as a gift with purchase!

Every August I read Delirium by Lauren Oliver, because it’s my all time favorite series as it has a place in my heart. Why I choose August to read it is because I try to match the season the book is ultimately placed in to the one I’m reading it during. I read Delirium in August, Pandemonium in September, and Requiem in October.
I also listen to the same playlist that I accidentally happened upon when I first read the series, which has songs that perfectly work with the book.
If you haven’t read this series, and you’ve been having either an existential curiosity lately or even just a romantic one, read this.
It’s good for even people who don’t enjoy romance genre sub-genre books.

Adam Silvera's The First to Die at the End
★★★★★
Hurrah! I've finally finished my first book this year - it's been a long year so far of disappointing, unfinished books. I listened to this on audiobook and enjoyed returning to a universe where Deathcast exists. I also enjoyed the cameos from They Both Die at the End characters.
In this prequel we meet Valentino, who has just moved to NYC to escape his homophobic parents, and Orion, who lost his parents in 911
One of them is the first ever person to receive a call from Deathcast & one of them will be the first to die at the end.
Like They Both Die at the End, the stories revolves around how to really live your life in one day, how to fall in love, how to forgive, & how to be yourself. The side stories were fascinating and I'm quite tempted to read They Both Die at the End again because I just know I must have missed some of those Easter eggs.
Highly recommended and thrilled that the BorrowBox app in England got this one so quickly

✩🏴‍☠️🌊Review:
Get ready to set sail and embark upon the show-stopping sequel to “Defy the Night.”
For the first time, the reader is able to venture beyond the Kingdom of Kandala aboard the “Dawn Chaser.” Kemmerer immerses the reader in in the environment on the pirate ship by using language fit for sea life, nautical terms, and detailed imagery.
Kemmerer is also thoughtful in the worldbuilding of the Kingdom of Ostriary. Through Captain Rian Blakemore’s character, the reader learns about the political atmosphere surrounding the chain of six islands and the infighting over the throne.
Blakemore also serves as a source of tension for Tessa and Corrick’s relationship. Blakemore manipulates Tessa into seeing only the evil in Corrick, who is struggling to choose his true self over the cruel persona he has adopted for so long. With so many people influencing their perceptions of each other, Tessa and Corrick's love is put to the test overseas like never before.
Once again, the reader alternates between Tessa and Corrick’s perspectives with the addition of a new viewpoint: “The Outlaw.” The Outlaw’s point-of-view allows the reader to keep up with Kandala while Tessa and Corrick are abroad. The mystery surrounding his identity also keeps the reader on their toes and contributes to the story’s wild twists and turns.
While there are only three perspectives featured, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing side characters like Quint, King Harristan, and Rocco play larger roles in this novel. I look forward to seeing how they fit into the final book in the “Defy the Night” trilogy and how Tessa and Corrick will recover from the explosive way “Defend the Dawn” ended!
➤ 4.25 stars

Where are you traveling/visiting in your current read? 📚🍂🤎 . Welcome to our stop in the Bookstagram Tour for Misprized by @nataliesburford hosted by @mtmctours! Misprized is the first book in a YA Fantasy series in which Severine is traded by her grandmother and forced to find a cure for a mysterious illness that plagues the kingdom. To find the cure, she must enter into a competition called the Inquest of the Betrothed, trick a cunning king, and survive against mythological beings who are stronger than she’ll ever be. Out now!!
 .
{Book Review} Misprized is one of our latest reads & it was a great tale featuring a human girl that enters blindly into an impossible quest!! This is the story of Severine, an adventurous independent young lady that sees the world with wonder while also seeking a peaceful life. I loved how despite being sheltered she was not afraid to take on the challenge of thwarting the fearsome king in search of ingredients to stop a deadly disease that promises to doom them all. And then there is so much to learn of the magical world that she’s living in, from the mythological creatures she’s being forced to compete to the history of this world. Misprized is a compelling, high-stakes story with the chosen one trope (that I will never grow tired of reading) & it’s the perfect fantasy book to add to your TBR! 😍🤎 .
And don't forget to visit #MisprizedMTMC from February 6th - February 15th for more beautiful tour posts & reviews!

✯✯✯ COVER REVEAL ✯✯✯
Where Oceans Burn by Casey L. Bond
Releasing Oct. 13th, 2022
Cover Designer: @theillustratedauthor
With these three virtues, we shall rise. With these three, we shall conquer: Truth. Honor. Blood.
To my people, the sky-reigning Empyreans, Intention Day is sacred... To me, it’s the day my carefully
crafted lie crumbles and my truth gives way to my ruin. The great scale of the goddess Neera has tipped out of my favor. The pans teeter between weighty punishment and deadly opportunity. My choices? Capture my most formidable enemy before next Intention Day, or forfeit my wings.
But life’s loftiest plans are often a breath away from disaster, and tragedy strikes as unpredictably as a bolt of lightning. When I find myself at the mercy of the Shark of the Sea, the monster who killed the person I loved most, I accept my fate. My death. But the Shark does not lash out in revenge for all I’ve done. He tells me his true name is Crest. And while he calls me a Scourge, he honors his orders to guard me.
I am Elira, great Scourge of the Sky.
He is Crest, cunning Shark of the Sea.
Together... we could be unstoppable.
