This is the second Hua Cheng sketchbook. Notable changes: the braided bookmark is made from ribbon this time, and I liked it a lot better. Much easier to work with.

The vinyl lettering I chose a more messy handwriting font, for Hua Cheng's canonically bad handwriting.

The other materials are the same, except I went back to the heat n bond method for the bookcloth.

Specifically, I made 2 different errors that I covered up with vinyl. One was a small cut where the bookcloth wraps around the book, usually a nightmare. But vinyl adheres completely and fixed the structural issue a tiny 1 cm cut can cause.

The second was a smear of the distress mica I used for the silver spray, and an extra butterfly covered that with no issue.

Overall I'm a huge fan of it.

The Silmarillion Rewrite. Always fun to play with lord of the rings & inspired works-- they just have a certain kind of old fantasy book vibe which I tried to honor here.

The gift recipient finally got the book, so I can post pictures now!

We took inspiration from the actual Silmarillion cover design, and from the first edition copies of The Hobbit.

It was a fun project!

I particularly love revisiting the poetry.

This is a double fan perfect bound paperback. I printed the cover I designed onto cardstock and then used clear contact paper to protect it.

★ What has everyone been up to lately? It’s been a ✨week✨ and I miss all of you! Actually, it’s been a few weeks of that 🥲 I haven’t been posting as much as I want to simply because I’ve been either out of state or deep in the throes of teaching and grad school. Much of the time I have been home has been devoted to lesson planning, grading, and keeping on top of my own assignments and readings. BUT! I’m enjoying this new journey, and feel deep in my soul that I am on the right path. I’ve been trying to not feel guilty over not posting, but it’s hard—especially when you go from posting every single day for 2+ years (and being really proud of that) to only posting a couple times a week because you don’t have time to take pictures. It helps to remind myself that I’ve had a couple of weeks that have been nonstop as it is, and it’s okay to prioritize myself when I do have a moment of free time. That said—I finally have a whole weekend at home, with no visitors or other major plans besides the norm!
