Sunday 21st January 2024
>> I made a post yesterday of me mini-ranting about how I don't have any proper career goals because the ones I made years ago I've achieved now, so I'm questioning myself "What now? 🙃".
Then I remembered I have a recruiter mate and I emailed him asking for help and he gave me a long list of what I could do now to get better from my position. And I like sharing help so here's what he said + my own notes of what I understood from them~!
Hope this helps you too~!
Tumblr media
🩶 Assess Current Skills and Set Goals
Identify your strengths and weaknesses.
Set clear goals for technical and leadership skill development.
My notes: I am good at some languages/technologies whilst I am a complete noob in others. Yes, I use them but I am not confident in them and always have to Google what is going on. I need to make a list of all the languages I am good at and those I am not so good at. Maybe even list why I'm not good at them. The same goes for non-technical skills. Got to make plans/goals on how I will improve them and get out of my comfort bubble on my comfort technologies and expand! Leadership skills would probably improve when I get solo projects given/have to present at Team meetings on my own in front of everyone~!
🩶 Technical Skill Enhancement
Deepen your proficiency in current programming languages.
Explore new technologies and frameworks relevant to your field.
My notes: I already answered this in the top one, but I shouldn't neglect my current skills to be able to learn the new ones. With the languages I am good and confident in, I still feel as though I haven't reached the more advanced stuff of that language. OOP stuff skill scares me in any programming language so I need to face my fears and learn it. From time to time, check what's popular in the market in terms of technology used and see which one aligns with my dream tech stack to use in the future and make plans to learn and develop myself~!
🩶 Project Leadership and Collaboration
Volunteer to lead small projects or take on more responsibility in current projects.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand different aspects of project development.
My notes: At work, I eventually (since I'm still new) should ask to be the lead on some projects just like my higher-up developer is to me. Lead my own projects, without having to report to someone unless in dire need or when the project is complete for testing, etc. The team is small so I should talk to the non-developers in the team and see from their POV how the project is. Understand different types of people in the team and communicate effectively. All of this can be transferred to non-work projects like an online group project on an Open-Source project on GitHub for example - lead projects and taking more responsibilities. Being able to talk to people with different skillsets as we work on a group project~!
🩶 Attend Workshops and Networking Events
Attend workshops, conferences, and networking events to expand your knowledge and connections.
Seek mentorship from experienced professionals, including CTOs.
My notes: My gosh, I dread this honestly. I'm still a relatively shy person so going to workshops and events still brings small anxiety but that's something I do want to break~! I will never know what I will learn, who I will meet etc if I don't go to one! I want to aim that this year I would like to go to one, preferably in or near my city. I always love the idea of having a mentor, honestly, I was going to pay someone to help mentor me on that part ( >> loads of cites offer mentorships for programming!!! ) but I feel like my manager right now is that person so I will keep working with him to develop more~!
Tumblr media
In conclusion, self-improvement as a programmer is both challenging and super hard to get started BUT rewarding in the end~!

Exceed Customer Expectations with eCommerce Customization
According to Walker Information, customer experience will overtake price and product as the key brand differentiator by the year 2020.1 There’s no debate – engaging experiences are what bring customers back time and time again.
It’s simply no longer enough for a brand to provide the basics of eCommerce. In fact, it can be argued that a properly tuned, streamlined eCommerce experience is the minimum expectation your customers have today. Customers are not tolerant of non-standard eCommerce flows. They want to search, view, add to their carts, and checkout, as quickly and painlessly as possible. The eCommerce process has become a commodity of sorts, everyone has it, and almost every company’s experience looks the same. For most, it is a standard script: search/browse, display product, add to cart, buy. With most eCommerce platforms, this approach is tightly coupled to templates or pages, making  it hard to innovate, and forcing a cookie cutter experience.
However, when the script is fully separated from the experience, this very dilemma presents a significant opportunity to stand out from the crowd. When the platform provides flawless execution of the script, your team is free to spend time working on what really matters, crafting unique and memorable experiences for your customers.
Find the Right Platform to Quickly and Easily Deliver Unique Experiences
The platform of the future needs to enable marketers to easily deliver these experiences. “How then”, you ask, “does it do this?” Headless API driven commerce is the key to unlocking a brand’s creative potential to present itself in new and exciting ways that delight customers and drive additional revenue through repeat sales. Through a curated set of APIs, IBM’s Watson Commerce portfolio is enabling these powerful experiences to come to market quickly and cheaply.
As proof of this, I offer you a sample microsite built on Watson Content Hub and IBM’s multi-tenant SaaS-based commerce platform, IBM Digital Commerce (IDC). Using the new Watson Content Hub APIs and IDC’s robust set of REST APIs for commerce functionality, a team of two developers was able to build a fully functioning, content-driven, commerce site with all the functionality and reliability of IBM WebSphere Commerce. The site supports the entire happy path for product purchase, and was developed by resources with zero working knowledge of WebSphere Commerce.  What’s more, I was able to stand this up on a fresh instance of Watson Content Hub, using a completely out-of-the-box instance of IDC, in less than 48 hours, AND I made ZERO configurations to either of those instances. I didn’t have to involve a developer, an engineer, or a sys admin.
This is revolutionary for marketers. It allows them to build mobile apps, micro sites, and other experiences without the need for commerce platform expertise while still being able to support a path to purchase as part of those experiences. Not only is this API-driven approach key to delivering on the omnichannel opportunities of today, but it is a solution that is future proofed for devices and channels that are still on a whiteboard in a Silicon Valley garage.  The future of commerce has already arrived, and IBM Digital Commerce has the platform to deliver it today.
Learn how
Want to learn more about how to quickly be on the path to building completely customized experiences for your customers? If you’re attending Think 2018 this year, please make a note to attend the session I’m co-presenting with IBM’s Alex Shum on Wednesday, March 21st, “External Customizations (xC)—A New Programming Model for IBM Digital Commerce.”
In the meantime, learn more about IDC.

Running For Weight Loss Part 2!
“Just imagine what it would feel like to go running tomorrow with 10+ fewer pounds. How much lighter would you feel? How much more efficient would you be? How much more confident would you feel? If your goal is weight loss, you can accomplish it with running… … even if you’ve been running for years and have seen no progress. … even if you’re getting older and think it’s “all about hormones.” … even if you’re a woman and always struggle with those last few pounds. If you train the right way, it’s entirely possible.”– Jason Fitzgerald
In part 1 of “Running for Weight Loss”, we had the chance to get some great tips from Olympian Marathoner Shalane Flanagan and Chef/Runner Elyse Kopecky. In part 2, we will get some great workout and training tips from expert running coach Jason Fitzgerald. Jason is the founder of Strength Running where he publishes running content and offers personalized running plans as well as online coaching. His coaching philosophy is based on a set of training principles that help runners race faster and prevent injuries. He has an extensive collection of client testimonials from the years he has been coaching, including a number of runners who have lost weight (in a healthy way) while training with him. This past week I had the chance to catch up with Jason and learn his training and diet tips for running and weight loss.
FitRX: Hi Jason! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview! I’ve read a lot of your blogs on training and nutrition. Can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?
Jason: I started running almost by accident. Actually, I totally despised running as a kid but I thought I could high jump on the cross country team my freshman year in high school. I quickly learned that all you do is run in XC! After I could barely finish a 20 minute run (with a lot of walk breaks), somehow I stuck with it because the team was a lot of fun. I went on to run cross country, indoor and outdoor track in high school and at the collegiate level at Connecticut College. I never stopped and went on to focus on longer distances up to the marathon. Over my 18+ years of running, I’ve managed to run a 4:33 mile, 54:50 for 10 miles, and a 2:39:32 marathon.
In 2010, I started Strength Running because I felt like I had something to share with the world. I had recently recovered from a 6-month It Band Syndrome injury after my first marathon. I knew that if I wanted to continue improving, I had to restructure my training. And I’m happy to say that since 2009, I’ve only had one (relatively minor) injury! Along with my USA Track & Field coaching certification and the 10+ running coaches I’ve learned from, this experience lets me help runners set monster personal bests while staying healthy long-term.
I’ve also published several books, with my latest being . It debuted as the #1 best seller in the running category on Amazon and helps beginner and intermediate runners structure smart, well-designed training for any race.
FitRX: You do quite a bit of coaching, and have some awesome testimonials! Where did your passion for running come from, and what do you hope to help your clients with most?
Jason: Ever since I first got addicted to improving my own finish times, I’ve been an admitted running geek. I’ve read nearly all the major training books out there (for fun…). Most of my clients want one of three things: to get faster, to run more consistently, or to stay injury-free. My training programs are geared toward these major goals.
FitRX: As a runner, I’d have to agree with those 3 goals. I’m also really interested in your take on running for weight loss. I know you’ve had several clients who have lost a lot of weight while training with you! Do you have one client that stands out in terms of their results?
Jason: One of my clients, Lydia, has an incredibly inspirational story. Lydia came to me in the fall of 2010 and decided on a whim to hire me as her coach. She had never been coached, wasn’t particularly fast, and didn’t run consistently. Lydia had run a few half-marathons but was frustrated with never knowing how to train. Her running was off-and-on and her motivation levels were all over the place. The stock training plans she followed didn’t seem to take into consideration that she was overweight and she always felt like she had been run over by a truck.
Lydia challenged me as a coach to make running enjoyable and a lifelong passion that she would continue far after our coaching relationship ended. Finding joy in running is a huge goal and one that eludes many runners who slave away on the treadmill hoping to lose a pound or two. But Lydia’s second goal was a bigger challenge: lose her unwanted weight safely while still running races. I used a three-pronged strategy to keep her healthy: no intense workouts, mostly easy mileage and strides, and a lot of body weight exercises. My goal was to injury-proof Lydia so that she could run consistently – the key to her weight loss.
We used [cross training] in Lydia’s training… Her more intense sessions were done in the pool or bike. Cross training can be a valuable tool to build fitness and increase weight loss without the risk of injury. Over the course of 2 years, Lydia transformed from an inconsistent, overweight 2:35 half-marathoner into a lean running machine, posting a recent PR in the half-marathon of 1:41. She lost over 80 pounds.
FitRX: That’s incredible! Congrats to Lydia and you… From a strictly training perspective, what do you think is the biggest key for achieving weight loss goals with running?
Jason: Runners need to focus on three main aspects of fitness for weight loss: a long run (to promote fat loss), a fast workout (to rev the metabolism), and strength workouts (to build lean muscle mass).
FitRX: From a nutrition perspective, what do you think is the biggest key? I know, for me, after a fast/interval run or long run, I am starving!
Jason: Nutrition is definitely more important than exercise for weight loss. But I despise “diets” and the many Registered Dietitians (including Nancy Clark, arguably the world’s most prolific dietitian who advises the Boston Celtics) I interviewed over the years agree that no single diet is mandatory and calorie counting is not necessary. Instead, focus on whole foods, eliminate processed foods and refined sugars, and eat for satiety.
FitRX: Great tips! Do you have a favorite recipe that you make or recommend after a difficult training session?
Jason: I love these energy bites for during a long run or right afterward for quick fueling. Easy to prepare and delicious!
ENERGY BITES
Makes 16 servings Prep time: 15 minutes active + 1 hour in fridge Cook time: none *vegan, gluten free with GF certified oats
Ingredients 1 & 1/2 cups packed pitted dates (about 1 lb) 1 cup toasted, unsalted almonds 1 cup rolled oats (GF certified if necessary) 1 teaspoon cinnamon 3/4 teaspoon salt
1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor; process until very finely ground and mixture holds together when pressed. 2. Line an 8 x 8 baking pan with plastic wrap, leaving excess plastic wrap hanging over the edges of the pan. 3. Place the mixture in the pan in an even layer, then cover with the excess plastic and press down very firmly to pack the mixture in. 4. Refrigerate for 1 hour to set, then turn the bars out of the pan onto a cutting board, peel back the plastic wrap, and cut into bite-size squares.
FitRX: Those look delicious! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview and sharing your expertise with us. What is next for you? Do you have any of your own races coming up? Any books/projects you are working on?
Jason: For my personal running, I’m getting back into shape after some down time (having a second baby is tough!). I have two major projects lined up that will be announced soon, but for now they’re a secret! But I can say they’ll be focused on beginners and advanced weight training. Runners on my email list will hear about them first.
FitRX: Awesome! Thanks again and good luck with all your upcoming projects!

Switching to Firefox
Tumblr media
This post is to answer @leaveblackkbrosalone’s question on my post about me switching to Firefox!
I recently had an eye opener moment when researching about Google and how they collect data to alter the things they recommend you and other things. And it was astonishing how much data they collect on you and how they track you every movement whilst on Google/Chrome/Other Google services e.g. Google PlayStore.
I truly believe there are better alternatives out there than the default Google Chrome people tend to use. We now live in world of constant data breaches and online tracking, therefore protecting your online privacy and security has never been more important.
I’ve recently deleted Chrome from my phone and computer and switched to FireFox and I’ll explain why~!
Tumblr media
What is Firefox?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Firefox is the famous fox web browser! It is a free and open-source that is developed by the Mozilla Foundation. It's designed to be fast, secure, and customizable, and is available for multiple operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Firefox includes a suite of built-in features, such as enhanced tracking protection, custom themes (so important obviously) and add-ons, and a flexible interface that can be tailored to the user's needs.
Why Firefox and not Google Chrome?
There are a bunch of reasons why I chose to delete Google Chrome and why I prefer FireFox now, let me list some:
Privacy
Firefox has a strong focus on privacy and security, with features like built-in tracking protection and a strict anti-tracking policy.
In contrast, Chrome is owned by Google, a company that relies heavily on data collection and advertising for its business model.
Customisation
Firefox has a much more flexible and customizable interface than Chrome, with a wide range of add-ons (equivalent to Chrome’s ‘extensions’ I believe) and themes available to personalize your browsing experience.
Open-source
Firefox is an open-source project, meaning that anyone can contribute to its development and review the code for security issues.
Chrome, on the other hand, is based on the Chromium project, which is also open-source but is controlled by Google.
Cross-platform compatibility
Firefox works on a wide range of devices and operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile devices.
Chrome is also available on multiple platforms, but it's more heavily integrated with Google's services and ecosystem.
Performance
Firefox has made significant improvements in recent years and is now a competitive browser in terms of speed and efficiency.
Still, Chrome is known for its fast performance
Community-driven
Firefox is developed by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, which has a strong focus on user empowerment and community involvement. This means that Firefox users have a voice in the development process and can contribute to the browser's future direction.
With all of that being said, there is one particular area that caught my eye that I mentioned briefly: the Privacy and Security.
Firefox’s Privacy and Security Advantages
Firefox definitely has advantages in these areas than Google Chrome surprisingly!
Enhanced Tracking Protection
Firefox includes built-in tracking protection that blocks many common types of trackers by default, including
third-party cookies, cryptominers, and fingerprinters
This helps to protect your online privacy and reduce the amount of data that's collected about you. Below are the options for the 'Enhance Tracking Protection' in the settings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No Google Tracking
Oh boy, I like this one. So unlike Chrome, which is owned by Google and ties into its advertising and data collection ecosystem, Firefox is developed by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation and has no affiliation with Google or any other major tech company. This means that Firefox is less likely to collect and share your data with third parties.
No Sign-In Required
While Chrome requires you to sign in with a Google account to access certain features, Firefox does not require any sign-in at all. This means that you can still use Firefox without creating a user profile or linking your browsing activity to any personal information -
Don’t get me wrong, if you want to use the Google search engine WITHIN FireFox, it might still prompt you to sign in but you still don’t have to! Also, the choice is there to create an account just to sync bookmarks and tab from one device to another e.g. phone to laptop.
Tumblr media
Private Browsing Mode
(Another very important part!) Firefox offers a Private Browsing mode that doesn't save your browsing history, cookies, or temporary files. This can be useful for browsing sensitive content or preventing others from seeing what you've been looking at.
Firefox's Private Browsing mode offers a more robust set of features for privacy and security than Google’s Incognito mode. Within the ‘Settings’, you can customise your privacy settings more extensively than Google Chrome. You can choose to block all third-party cookies, prevent websites from accessing your location data, and clear your browsing history and data automatically when you close the browser.
Google's Incognito mode does not block all cookies or prevent all forms of tracking.
Open-Source Security
Like I mentioned before, Firefox is an open-source project, meaning that anyone can review the code and contribute to its development. This helps to ensure that security vulnerabilities are identified and addressed quickly, and that the browser remains as secure as possible. You too can find something and report it to the repository via creating an issue!
Tumblr media
To Conclude
Of course, these are just some general reasons why you might prefer Firefox over Chrome, and the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference and priorities. I know with developers, they would prefer Chrome for the dev tools and I think it’s almost a standard to use Chrome (though at my workplace we use Microsoft Edge), anyhoo Google is just a default for web browsing and search engine. I also know it’s hard if you have a whole Google ecosystem set up like Google docs to Sheet to Slides, emails, calendar etc, you can still use them but on a safer browser.
I would also recommend using ‘DuckDuckGo’ for a search engine as they too are really good with security and privacy but as a search engine (plus on their phone app they have a cool animation when you want to delete you browsing data from the tabs hehe)!
Links to interesting pages for more information on this topic:
YouTube videos: video 1 | video 2 | video 3 | video 4
Articles: article 1 | article 2 | article 3
I’d say give it a go, if you don’t like it I still recommend anything but Google Chrome! Well, that’s all and thank you for reading! 🥰👍🏾💗

Basics of HTML5: Let's build a webpage!
Tumblr media
I'm a huge advocate for learning HTML5 as your first coding language (remember, it's not a programming language)! HTML5 is a great and easy coding language to get you into the feel of coding, especially for complete complete beginners!
I see a lot of people on Tumblr wanting to get into just creating their own websites but don't know how to start - coding is a new thing to them! So, I'm here to help with the language I know like it's the back of my hand!
And I am also an advocate of building projects in order to learn anything in coding/programming! Thus, what better way to learn the basics of HTML5 than to actually build a simple webpage? Let's get started~!
Tumblr media
What is HTML5?
HTML, which stands for Hypertext Markup Language, is a special coding language that is used to create webpages. With HTML, you can tell a web browser, like Google Chrome or Safari, what to display on a webpage, such as text, images, and videos. And 'HTML5' is just the latest version of HTML!
HTML tags are special words or symbols that you use to create webpages. You use these tags to tell the web browser what content to display on a webpage, like headings, paragraphs, images, links, and more. Tags come in pairs (most of the time) so you'll have an opening tag and a closing tag. An example of the syntax:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Simple Webpage
As I mentioned, we will be making a simple webpage for a person called David - see, he needs a portfolio webpage to start off with, and we're going to help me (as well as learning HTML5, of course).
Here is the code we will be using:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty code, I know but also a bit confusing - let's get into understanding the code by grouping them into chunks! But just a heads up, the code includes these tags:
!DOCTYPE html (mmh it's more of a declaration really)
html, head, body
title
h1, h2, h3
p, a
li, ul, ol
These are some of the common tags used in all webpages on the internet! Okay, let's look at the code finally~!
Tumblr media
The basic structure of every HTML page
Tumblr media
Every HTML file looks like this - it has to have all of these tags!
The first line, !DOCTYPE html tag, tells the web browser which version of HTML is being used.
The code is contained within html tags, which enclose the entire webpage.
The head tags contain information about the webpage, such as the title and links to other resources.
The body tags contain the main and visible content of the webpage, such as text, images, and videos.
Together, this code provides the basic structure for an HTML webpage, with the head tags containing metadata and the body tags containing the actual content.
In the head tags
Tumblr media
The title tags enclose the title of the webpage. In this example, the title is "My Programming Blog".
The title appears in the title bar of the web browser and is often used by search engines and social media sites to display the name of the webpage.
In the body tags - Headings and paragraphs
Tumblr media
The h1 tags create a main and biggest heading, which in this case is "Welcome to My Programming Blog!" - you can only have one h1 tag on a webpage.
The h2 tags create subheadings, which in this case include "Latest Post", "About Me", and "My Projects" - you can have multiple h2 to h6 tags on a page.
The h3 tags create a sub-subheading under h2 tags, which in this case is "How I Improved My Coding Skills".
The p tags create paragraphs of text that provide more detail about the blog's content and purpose, including a summary of the latest blog post and information about the author and their projects.
In the body tags - lists and links
Tumblr media
To start any list, you need to either start with ul tags or ol (ordered (numbered)) tags
The ul tags create an unordered list of items.
The li tags create list items within the unordered list.
Each list item includes a hyperlink created using the 'a' tags, with the text of the link being the name of a programming project.
The href attribute within each 'a' tag specifies the URL where the project code can be found on GitHub.
Attributes go inside the opening tags' arrows '<' and '>'.
Tumblr media
The End Result
Tumblr media
Boom - she's gorgeous, I know! A basic, simple webpage! We did it! You can see the page live + the code used here: [LINK]. Play around with the code, change things, experiment, break things, fix them - do what you need to learn further!
And that includes some online resources to help!
LINK 1 | LINK 2 | LINK 3
And some resources/posts I have shared about HTML
LINK 1 | LINK 2 | LINK 3
What next?
Learn CSS3! The page looks basic and looks like what pages were like when the internet was invented! You need colour, fancy fonts and layouts! CSS helps with that, as it is a styling sheet! Be sure to do some research but I also share resources on my blog under my #resources tag!
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading and best of luck learning coding/programming! Remember, this isn't the only way to get into coding! People even recommend languages like Python to be beginners' first language, but I say that HTML5 should be the first coding language and then Python is your first programming language - don't know the difference? I made a post about it here!!
But definitely for people going into Web Development, HTML5 all the way! I don't think you can avoid learning HTML5 with Web Development (not 100% sure though...)!
Anyhoo, have a nice day/night! 👋🏾💻💕

Coding A Simple Firefox Extension
Tumblr media
Hiya! Today I want to share my experience creating a simple Firefox extension. I was a bit intimidated by the idea of creating an extension, but I was determined to give it a try! Been on my 'projects to-do' list for a long time! 😅
I found that the process was actually quite straightforward, and with some guidance from a couple of YouTube videos, I was able to create a working (temporary) extension in just an hour. My hope is that this post will serve as a helpful guide for anyone who is interested in creating their own Firefox extension~!
Tumblr media
What exactly are we making?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We will be making a simple temporary extension - an extension that only you have access to e.g. end-users will not be able to use the extension. This is a way to test if your extension works and find issues. I might make another post on how to actually upload it for other people to use, but for now, this method is for you to use the extension.
This is the link to the official Mozilla Firefox 'Temporary installation' Guide' for extenisions - LINK
Now, for the steps into making the extension:
Setting up the development environment
Creating a manifest file
Adding a pop-up window
Attaching JavaScript functionality to a button
Load your extension in Firefox
Let's get started~!
Tumblr media
Step 1 - Setting up the development environment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously, you will need to have Firefox installed on your computer. You will also need a code editor, such as Visual Studio Code or Sublime Text, to write your code. I'm going to use VS Code.
In your code editor, create a new folder where you will store your extension files. You can name this folder whatever you like. For this example, I will call it 'Firefox Extension'. I also recommend adding the following files in the folder:
index.html (or in this case popup.html file)
icon image in .png or .jpg or similar formats
manifest.json - talked about in the next step
script.js
Step 2 - Creating a manifest file
Tumblr media
The most important file I believe when creating an extension is the manifest JSON file. This file will contain metadata about your extension, including its name, version, and permissions. In your new folder, create a new file called "manifest.json".
This is the general structure of the file. The icon size you need to have is 48x48 pixel size image and then you can have others to be responsive to screensizes, I just added one extra. The 'browser_action' part includes the default icon image that will display an icon in the Firefox toolbar and the popup html file. In 'scripts', that is where we will add the JavaScript code to run.
Step 3 - Adding a pop-up window
Tumblr media
The code simply displays the text "Hello World" and a button in the center of the window. I assume you're good at your HTML and CSS so I won't go into too much detail here but the CSS is in the style tags within the head tags and what we can see also is what is between the body tags - the 'Hello World' and the 'Click me!' button.
Don't forget to include the script tag at the end of the body tag so it'll link to the script.js file in your folder AND include "scripts": ["script.js"] in the manifest.json for the javascript code.
Step 4 - Attaching JavaScript functionality to a button
Tumblr media
Again, I hope you very basic JavaScript. This code basically adds an event listener to the button with the ID "myBtn" (which is the button with 'Click me!' on it). When the button is clicked, it changes the heading 1 text from 'Hello World' to 'The button was clicked!'.
And that it! Done with all the coding part and now to upload it for you to use~!
Step 5 - Load your extension in Firefox
Tumblr media
Open Firefox and type "about:debugging" in the address bar. This will open the Firefox Developer Tools page. Click the "This Firefox" section to the left of the page, then click "Load Temporary Add-on". Navigate to your extension folder and select the manifest.json file.
The extension is now loaded in Firefox! Click the icon in the toolbar to see your pop-up window!
Tumblr media
Whenever you make changes to the extension, back on the Firefox Developer Tools page, click the 'Reload' button on your extension section and changes should show up!
Tumblr media
I hope that this post has been helpful to you and that it has inspired you to create your own Firefox extension! 👩🏾‍💻💗 Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and experiment with different ideas - play with the colours or sizes or the javascript code! Don't be afraid to try new things and explore!!

Monk Mode | Study Hack
Tumblr media
I read an article on Business Insider that was called "How The 'Monk Mode' Productivity Hack Cured My Procrastination" and I was intrigued because I never heard of a study hack like this before! I learnt a lot from that post and researched more about it, so I'm here to share what I found! Hopefully it'll help someone!
So, are you struggling to concentrate on your work or studies? "Monk Mode" might be the solution for you! By eliminating distractions and committing to a single task, you can achieve a state of intense focus and productivity.
Learn about how to enter "Monk Mode" and improve your concentration and results~!
Tumblr media
What is Monk Mode?
Monk Mode is a term used to describe an intense and focused approach to studying or working. It involves eliminating distractions and other activities that may interfere with your concentration, and committing to a single task for an extended period of time.
“Monk mode is going into a hyperbolic chamber, where you can go to do a maximum amount of training in a short amount of time. It is dialing in on what’s really important and eliminating everything that’s not important so you can have the time, energy, focus, and money to really create what it is that you want.” - Gavin Speaks on YouTube
When you enter Monk Mode, you essentially dedicate yourself entirely to your studies, blocking out all other distractions and activities until you have achieved your goal. This can involve turning off your phone or other electronic devices, avoiding social media, limiting interactions with others, and even setting up a designated study space that is free from distractions.
The steps to Monk Mode
Create a distraction-free environment
Set a clear goal
Prioritize your work
Eliminate decision fatigue by planning ahead
Create to-do lists
No multitasking
Set a realistic timeframe to be in Monk Mode
Take breaks
Stay hydrated
Use headphones
Limit social interactions
Use productivity tools
Stay consistent as it creates a habit
Evaluating your session at the end
Celebrate your successes
In terms of productivity tools, you could use the Pomodoro technique, "Eat The Frog", time blocking, Eisenhower Matrix, Kanban boards, mind mapping and 80/20 rule (also known as the Pareto Principle)! I'll make a post about these soon!
The Goal?
The goal of "Monk Mode" is to maximize your focus and productivity by minimizing any potential distractions or interruptions. This can help you to stay on track and achieve your goals in a more efficient and effective manner, allowing you to make the most of your study time and achieve better results.

Fundamentals of Programming
Tumblr media
Every time you learn a new programming language, you’ll come across topics you’ve seen before when you learnt other languages. All the same but different syntax and methods for that new programming language - what you're doing is learning the fundamentals of programming.
The fundamentals of programming refer to the basic concepts and principles that underpin all programming languages and software development. When programmers learn and become really good at these basic ideas, they can create more complicated computer programs and even come up with brand-new software ideas with confidence. Let's explore those basic concepts we need to understand as programmers~!
Tumblr media
Variables
Variables are used to store data, such as numbers or strings of text.
Knowing how to manipulate variables can help to control the flow of the program.
Tumblr media
Data types
Different types of data, such as integers, floating-point numbers, and strings, require different ways of handling and processing.
Knowing the correct data type to use can help to optimize the performance of the program.
Tumblr media
Operators
Operators are used to performing arithmetical or logical operations on data, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and comparison. Other operators include assignment, bitwise, membership and identity.
Knowing how to use them correctly can help to ensure that the program produces the correct output.
Tumblr media
Control structures
Control structures, such as loops and conditional statements, are used to control the flow of a program.
Understanding how to use them can help decide which parts of the code to execute or skip over, depending on specific conditions.
Tumblr media
Functions
Functions are reusable blocks of code that perform a specific task.
Knowing how to create and use functions can help to make code more modular and easier to maintain.
Tumblr media
Input and output
Programs often require input from users or other sources, and they need to produce output in a variety of formats.
Knowing how to handle input and output can help to make the program more interactive and user-friendly.
Tumblr media
Debugging
Debugging involves identifying and fixing errors or bugs in the code.
Knowing how to use debugging tools and techniques can help to make the process easier and more efficient.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These concepts form the foundation of programming and are essential for understanding and using any programming language. You’re going to learn them somehow and eventually, it’s important to understand them fully so you can prevent making mistakes in your code in the future.
There’s no rush into learning these as well. Take as much time as you need, because getting these foundations down and set helps in the long run!
Thanks for reading!! Hope you learnt something new! 👏🏾💻💗

Cut to the chase, this will be a very long post because of the amount of information the people presenting gave us! So much! Anyhoo, the 1.5-hour Zoom meeting was a bunch of representatives from mostly tech companies giving out advice for CVs/Resumes, practical career advice, interviews, and technical interviews. Though this is targeted towards tech people, anything can find the information given to be somewhat helpful!
The Sections
CV/Resume Advice focused
Preparing for first round Interview
How to Stand Out on LinkedIn
Technical Interviews and how to stand out to the Tech Hiring Manager
Career and CV/Resume tips for Tech Graduates
Warning Signs from An Interview
Section 1 - CV / Resume Advice 💻📑
Employers only read your CV in 30 seconds - make the information they are going to read count.
Make it personal to you AND relevant to the role you are applying for
Make sure the content on your CV is concise - don't ramble on forever
The layout should be easy on the eye - not all stuck together in terms of text but not too colorful and in your face
Formatting - The most important and relevant information at the top.
Create a punchy Bio summary at the top - Three-four sentences about who you are and what you do - what you are passionate about
It’s okay to have a 2-page CV/Resume IF the information is all relevant. If not, keep it to 1 page.
Skills - Technical skills and soft skills listed
Your experience ✨
Fact-based.
Don’t copy the job descriptive
Talk about YOUR achievements
Don’t use too much “I did this… I am this…”
Your education 🏫
Include everything relevant like bootcamps, apprenticeships in the area you are applying for
Keep high school information minimal if not relevant
Hobbies and Interests 🎮🎲
Share hobbies that show a skill
Think about what the company does e.g. A gaming company and you're a gamer
Share you’re creative - an eye for colour, design, and creative thinking
Know how to destress - you like yoga and mindfulness
Don’t include hobbies that are more lifestyle e.g. shopping and eating out
Include awards you have gotten that would be relevant to the job you are applying to.
Section 2 - Preparing for first round Interview 👩‍💻
❌ Don't ❌
Do not speak negatively of your previous company/employees - it has a bad look on you and might jeopardize your employment stage if you get the job when they talk to your previous manager
Do not appear to be disengaged/uninterested when interviewed - body language can be assessed also
Do not give false information - about your skill set, don't lie saying you know a language when you don't, and be transparent
✅ Do ✅
Do ask for clarification if you are unsure about anything. Could be about the job description, or want them to expand on things, do ask questions 💯
Do active listening and respond 👂 - ensure that you are present in the moment
Do ensure you sell your strength/have a positive attitude - sell yourself so that they can pick you
What is the typical interview process? 🎬
Phone/Video Screening with the hiring manager/someone from the company
1st interview -  Face-to-Face / Remote with the hiring manager/member of the team via Teams / Zoom etc
2nd Interview
Stakeholder/Hiring Manager
Might do a presentation or a task (technical interview if for a tech role)
Give yourself enough time to complete the task
Key Tips to succeed in the interview 🔑
Preparation - ensure you look up who the attendees are for the interview (e.g. via Linkedin)
Research - Look up the company information/Statistics/Glassdoor reviews/Social media content. See how they are online, what the company’s culture is like, pros and cons
Questions - Do not be afraid to have a list of questions for your potential employer / take a notepad with you, to prompt this / take responses down.
Review - Study the job descriptions to identify the pros and cons of the job.
Structure your answers - STAR approach - Situation, Task, Action, Approach
Time management - If you have multiple interviews to prepare for, schedule allocated time in your day to prepare for each process
Rest - Ensure to have a good night's rest prior to the day. Allow yourself no distractions in the last 15 mins leading up to your interview!
Section 3 - How to Stand Out on LinkedIn 🙌
Going through each section of your LinkedIn profile and tips on how to improve it!
Banner
Having a banner is best, don’t leave it empty.
Make it related to your desired role - a techy image for tech people, the image of the city’s business sector for business people
Profile picture
Have a profile picture to have an idea of who you are
Have the “Looking for work” banner on
Sub-section
The headline: Be passionate about who you are. Have key elements of who you are.
Have your name and pronouns
It's okay to use emojis in your profile - shows personality
Featured Section
Use the featured section to show off who you are
Show pieces of work you’ve done
Have certificates? Show them here
You can have up to 5 pieces in the featured section so choose wisely
It shows the employer how active you are in the community for tech people
Activity
Write posts every so often
Use hashtags (only 4-5 at most) to make your post reach more
Use hashtags that have a lot of followers (search in on LinkedIn to find out how many followers the hashtag has)
If you have recently been let go, make a post about it, with the hashtag, and people will repost or comment to help you
About
Another part where you can talk about yourself
Make it really personal
Be specific - not just a long paragraph about yourself
Key skills - programming languages, even things you are currently working to learn
Talk about your strong areas
Add a GitHub, Replit, GitLab, etc
Recommendation
If you have worked somewhere else, have an ex-coworker make a recommendation for you - employers love to see how other people who have interacted with you have to say about you
Talking to Hiring people - Not a section but a to-do
It can be scary but it’s okay to message the hiring individual to say “Hey I have recently applied, is it okay to look out for my application” and go on more about why you would be a good candidate.
The hiring managers have to look at so many applications and CVs/Reumes and they find it difficult to see people’s values and personalities so giving them a message will prompt them to search for your application and read through it.
Section 4 - Technical Interviews and Standing out to the Hiring manager in one 🚀🤘
Each company is different and will be doing it in a different way - e.g. one company tests your C# skills and another might test your PHP skills
Prepare by asking questions about what it would involve - most employers tell you what languages will be involved, if they don’t, ASK!
Coding exercises and Take-Home challenges are the most common
Understand what platform and what format will it be in e.g. what programming language you will use
Ask questions if you don’t understand something! - You don’t understand one part of the coding exercise, ask. It’s not weak to ask questions, you don’t want to do the exercise completely wrong.
Use Google - It's okay to Google to refresh your knowledge you've forgotten a bit. Googling is a skill in itself.
Use the STAR technique
Be honest and be yourself - don’t lie, be honest if you completely don’t understand something
Be confident in what you CAN do
How to Impress a Tech employer 👀
Ask questions 🤔
The relevant question to the job role
Ask about the team, company, culture, responsibilities, and career path, and even ask the Hiring Manger why they like their job also!
Don’t wing it
Highlight additional learning
Coding bootcamps, open source contributions, online free learning
Showcase your previous work
GitHub, GitLab, Projects, Presentations, etc.
Section 6 - Warning Signs from An Interview 😰❌
Not every company knows how to hire and interview well - making the whole process even worse. Here are some things to watch out for...
Structure ❌
No structure to the interview
No intro to set expectations
Not being able to articulate what the company does not get you excited about the work they do
Or it’s like they asked to do an interview with 10 minutes notice…
The Interviews 😨
Whenever you ask how long the interview process / how many rounds there will be and they don’t give you a concrete answer… start to worry…
Rule of 4 interviews - having so many rounds wastes your time and the company’s time. 4 interview rounds at most!
Quality ❌
It might be structured but they might be asking shit questions that have no relevance to the job role at all
E.g. “How many golf balls can you fit in a mini car?” Why are you asking me that when I’m applying for a C# Developer role?
Power to the people!!! 🤘💯
Leave reviews on Google, Glassdoor, or anywhere else if the interview process was terrible.
Let other people know what the company is really like!
Call them out and make them improve their interviewing process.
┌── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆
Well, that's all! I hope some or all of the information I collected help you! If you think any of the information is incorrect or false, take it to the companies because I just copied what they presented on their slideshows 😋
Have a nice day/night and happy programming 👍🏾💗

When I first started to code, I didn’t really know what’s the real difference between programming and coding. Like, was I coding or was I programming right now? Does HTML count as coding or programming? I would even think a Programmer was this high computer science level that takes years to achieve! Programming and coding are often used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same thing - let’s talk about it!
At a high level, programming refers to the process of creating and designing computer software or applications. This typically involves writing code, as well as planning and testing the software to ensure it functions correctly. Programming often requires a deep understanding of computer science concepts and the ability to think abstractly and solve complex problems.
Coding, on the other hand, refers specifically to the act of writing code. Code is a set of instructions that a computer can understand and execute. Coding involves writing these instructions using a programming language, such as Java or Python.
Differences
Scope: Programming involves a wider range of activities, including planning, design, and testing, while coding specifically refers to the act of writing code.
Skills: Programming requires a more comprehensive understanding of computer science concepts and the ability to think abstractly and solve complex problems, while coding involves the ability to write code using a specific programming language.
Output: The output of programming is often a finished software product or application, while the output of coding is typically just the code itself.
Similarities
Both programming and coding involve the use of computer languages to create software or applications.
Both require a certain level of technical skill and expertise.
Both are important parts of the software development process.
So, let's quickly summarise: programming involves a wide range of activities, including the planning and design of software, while coding specifically refers to the act of writing code.
Hope this clears up things for anyone confused! And don't worry, even with pure HTML, you're still coding~! Happy coding! 🤎
