What are your top five fics by kudos? 1. Oathbreaking -Qui-Gon repudiates Obi-Wan and breaks their bond during the Phantom Menace Council scene and this has repercussions 2. Underestimation -The BAU team takes a case that reminds Reid uncomfortably of his childhood. Rossi finds him when he can't take it anymore 3. See My Dreams All Die -Obi-Wan kills Anakin on Mustafar and is severely wounded doing so. Palpatine is in need of a new apprentice, and Obi-Wan is so conveniently right there 4. 'Til the Sun Goes Down -Take Revenge of the Sith, but it's Obi-Wan instead of Mace who confronts Palpatine 5. Acquainted with the Night -(Unfinished) Reid is kidnapped on a case and the team races to find him (oh god, I can't believe my fifteen year old self's fics make this list) -

What's a WIP you'd like to finish, but doubt you ever will? all of them lmao. I never know when a fic's going to make it to the finish line or not, but if I had to choose one... my The Will of the Force series. it is. such an ambitious project and I have so many other wips going on so I don't think it will ever happen but I stare at it wistfully sometimes -

What are your writing strengths? I have been told I write good dialogue which is funny because dialogue is hell and if I never had to write it again I would be the happiest person ever. unfortunately, it is difficult to write a story without it (believe me, I've tried. I actually succeeded once) -

What are your writing weaknesses? commas............. jk I'm mostly okay at them. my biggest weakness is my need to make everything perfect on the first go around instead of just getting shit on the page and so I agonize over word choice for hours and wind up with stilted sentences. takes ages to get anything done. -

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? if it counts as another language, I've written dialogue in dai bendu (Jedi conlang) before. I love it, languages are awesome. and with ao3 you can do hovertext so your readers don't get lost, which is cool. -

First fandom you wrote for? star wars! a wip graveyard fic. but then I moved on to criminal minds, and the first posted was from there -

Favorite fic you've ever written? oh geez uhhhhhh. this is hard because I like my fics for different reasons but... right now, I think it's Soldier, Poet, King just because it's such a good character study and I think it's beautiful. Hits all the right notes trope-wise too.

Overview of Kélas and Shadows of the Past

posting this so anyone interested in my ramblings about OCs knows at least a little bit of wtf im on lmao

What is Kélas and Shadows of the Past?

Kélas is the one and only fictional continent that my OCs inhabit and where my story Shadows of the Past (and others, such as Yrsk's prequel Seven Circles of Death) is set. It has been in the works since 2017 and it's still unfinished. I have technically finished it in 2020 but I grew unsatisfied with a lot of stuff in it, so now it's in a really slow process of being written all over again. It's in Czech only and I definitely don't plan English translation.

The setting

The classic: medieval high fantasy with a little bit of magic and non-human beings (wyvern shapeshifters and harpies). As of the beginning of Shadows of the Past, there are four sovereign kingdoms – Northern Union, Parlene-Sekardian Federation, Amari Alliance and Southern Empire (also often called Lynirosan Empire). They all consist of a number of smaller autonomous units but talking about all of them would make this post billion times longer.

I could say the inspirations are very euro-centric but lately I've been working hard on making every culture it's own unique thing, with real-world inspirations being mostly only superficial. Likely influenced by my constructed languages.

The characters

And finally, the OCs. The "main" ones and my favorites are Nyr, the very main protagonist of Shadows of the Past (the book is written from his perspective), and Yrsk, the second protagonist, who is present throughout the entirety of the story. These two later become lovers.

Another two characters from the main cast are Snori and Hara. Snori is a harpy and Hara is a Rasanian noble. They become lovers as well, but significantly quicker than the guys who are having their slowburn homoerotic bromance with angst and shit. They travel with Nyr and Yrsk and are their good friends (wowza mlm and wlw solidarity ftw!!!).

And the last guy to join the main cast is Veran. A so called most incapable bounty hunter on the entire continent. Yrsk has beef with him.

Another guy who Yrsk is beefing with is Ren, a Rasanian and a knight of The Order of Saint Leiki (Lynirosan order of knights used to keep the Empire together and to spread the faith in one god Leiki; they are also known for being extremely strong). He lost an eye after a fight with Yrsk, which resulted in him basically getting expelled from The Order for being "not eligible for service". He can still call himself Knight, but is forced to work as a common soldier, which he actually doesn't really mind since he despises The Order. Such a thing is not rare amongst the Knights since they are sent into the organization as young boys, in most cases against their will (goes for nobles as well as for commonfolk, orphans and problem children).

I might not talk about her often but the main antagonist and villain of the story is the Empire's current ruler, Rivalis Angara III. Hikarius. She took the throne when she was just 7 years old, after the mysterious death of her parents. She might be insane, who knows. Speaking of her, another noteworthy character is her cousin Venrask Sentangar, a son to the lord of Sentia, who helped her keep the throne while being just 14 years old.

And to mention another antagonist (with a question mark), there is Kristjan, a guy, perhaps an asshole, only loyal to himself and Venrask, noone else. He has beef with the main cast.

Now, the wyvern shapeshifters (often called just dragons or shapeshifters) – they lost their shapeshifting powers about 700 years ago and to this day, nobody knows why. But for some reason, there suddenly appeared a bunch of dragons capable of shapeshifting, tied to the Empire and causing problems for our protagonists. Among those are Hrafnur, Estien, Ahke, Syranna, Nihka, Vahan, Rajka, Vida and more (13 in total, not all of them are named yet).

Another two frequently mentioned characters of mine are Kaija and Yarhaq, appearing only in Seven Circles of Death. Kaija was Yrsk's lover and Yarhaq was Yrsk's master who taught him everything about fighting, killing and surviving. They were both killed by Lynirosans, hence Yrsk's grudge against the Empire.

And finally, Ki Luram, or Sand or Písek in Czech. They are a character who lived in Rasan 700 years ago and their story is not flashed out yet, but I really like them and drawing them is also fun:)

Illust only for these two for the time being because I mostly post just them anyway.

What motivates you during the writing process? I'LL BE HONEST. It's the feedback. I can't wait to see what peoples reactions are going to be, can't wait to see what people are going to think and feel, whenever I write a particularly spectacular moment I'm practically vibrating with excitement just to see how people will react to it. In particular, right now, my personal muse is @kissporsche, I honestly want to finish as many fic as possible just to shove them all under their nose for approval. I've been told it's welcome 😂

in [insert fic], is there a deleted scene/idea you wish you could have included? Why did it get cut? There aren't many deleted scenes! The only scenes I've actually written and not used later got repurposed (recycling ftw). But there are deleted ideas for the fic that I suppose I wish I could have found a way to include-- namely, that Kinn and Porsche's Friday night meetups were going to be a bit less sexually heavy and a bit more bantery/romantic, and would include Kinn bringing him a series of increasingly opulent gifts as a means of winning his approval in a convoluted courtship. It would have been cute, but I don't think cute necessarily works for blue blood 😂

Do you have a favorite piece of figurative language you’ve written? Bold of you to assume I can remember anything i've written once it's published 😂 I probably have some real gems in my works that I would be proud of, but I'm always looking so far forward that I struggle to make room in my brain for looking back. The only thing that jumps to mind is this, from my Hardest of Hearts capri fic:

"Loving Laurent was like loving the sun. It burned warm and bright to be in his company, and, when Damen basked in it, it was the thing that staved off the cold, the thing that made his heart beat, that gave life to his very being. But, like Laurent, the sun was the cruelest and most fickle lover of all; to know what it was to have it, meant also to know the incomprehensible and frigid loneliness of its absence. When the shade came, and it always came, when the world turned and the light shrank beyond that ineffable horizon and darkness fell, that, too, was like Laurent’s love. The long nights of winter, when nothing grew, when the world was bleak and lonely and cold and everything shriveled and died in the wanting of something that would not come. That, too, was like loving Laurent."

He bites his lip, unsure how to respond, unsure if Kinn even wants him to. “I would punish them.” The words drop to the pit of his stomach like hailstones. A cold sweat forms on his brow, and his chest suddenly feels too tight. He closes his eyes, and bites the inside of his cheek so hard he tastes copper. “Then punish me.”

“Porsche,” Kinn repeats. The timbre of his voice makes shivers roll down Porsche’s spine. “If you won’t let me call someone, then what do you want me to do?” It’s a dangerous question. What does Porsche want? He knows that the symptoms are only going to get worse. He knows that very soon, he’s going to be in a lot of pain, pain that isn’t going to end until his heat does. He knows that there is only going to be one source of reprieve. Porsche also knows that he will never let an alpha fuck him. He will never let another alpha put him on his back, or on his knees, and have their way with him like he’s just another simpering omega slut. He will never submit to that. He will never lower himself to that. But… Kinn isn’t like other alphas.

— i answered this before but i'm going to answer it again ^^ it’s a seungmin fic that i wrote last year, it had 21k words in total but it was never published online because it was written mixed with two languages (filipino and english). also it would be a huge work if i translate it into full english 😭 i just hope i can post it one day!

[more armchair language-stuff rambling (been a while!), admittedly mostly written for an audience of me, under a cut since I remember my manners]

FASCINATING.

(well, to me anyway)

So idk what the official linguistics term for this is, but one pretty significant difference between English and the other two languages I speak is how words get combined.

Okay so first off, insert here standard disclaimer regarding confirmation bias. With that out of the way: When I speak English, I mostly try to keep each word of the sentence distinct as I speak it (and fail, but that's because /I/ personally am a terrible speaker. Anyway, I digress). The exceptions are contractions, but again, melding those words together is only accepted for certain established/common contractions like 'isn't' or 'ain't'. I can't expect to get away with saying/writing "mashtagether" or something instead of "mash together". But the thing is, in Telugu I sort of can.

I mean there's this whole section of grammar devoted to rules on mashing words together based on what sounds they start or end with (and they're pretty intuitive for most part, tbh) rather than a list of words like in English (i.e., is+not=isn't, etc.), and they apply to any set of words with those starting/ending sounds. These combined words are accepted in both, written and spoken Telugu too. (Even my url is a sandhi! It's a+surya+pasya=asuryampasya, if I'm not wrong. Sidenote: "if I'm not wrong is such a useless phrase for a reader. 'I'm saying this but I could be wrong, haha! So you can take away nothing from what I just said, except maybe that I'm annoying'. anyway, still using it though.) (Also, similar rules are also present in multiple Indian languages. Though I'm talking only about Telugu because that's what I have at least a vague idea about.) (Also also, yes I am incapable of not including a minimum of 68 asides in parentheses.) (Oh, also, if you're wondering, it's still quite easy to understand words even when joined together. "Mashtagether" makes no sense and is possibly hard to separate into the constituent words in English, but it's not so hard in Telugu. Idk why - the rules? the intuitiveness? not sure. Maybe just good ol' phonetic languages ftw? idk, anyway, back to the point.)

Anyway, I swear I'm going somewhere with this.

BUT. Aside from sandhis, there's another, informal form of mashing together of words that occur I think. At least, I think they're not covered by sandhis since I don't use them in written Telugu, but I could be mistaken. Or perhaps they're more accurately corruptions?

Anyway, the point is, these are more fascinating to me and I'd love to talk about them more, but right now I want to talk about one specific type of this corruption (as I'm going to call it). It's the first time I've noticed it be repeated in multiple words (with similar sounds, of course - which makes me wonder if I'm misidentifying it as a corruption). First, there's 'mom's brother'. In Telugu that would be your 'mamayya'. Except none of my cousins call my dad their 'mamayya', and instead say 'moyya'. (Well, more accurately they say Bobmoy since that's what 'Babu mamayya' eventually devolved into. It's also fun to say. See also: the derivative used by their kids: 'Babu tata' becoming Bobtat.) Or father in law, which in my part of the world is 'mamayyagaru'. But my mum was gently nudged to not pronounce it that way - and instead 'moyyagaru' is preferred. Now consider the completely unrelated word, raw mango! 'kaya' = unripe fruit, 'mamidi' identifies mango. So a raw mango is technically 'mamidikaya', but when spoken it's often called 'modkaya/maudkaya'.

For some reason, mama/mami words get converted into mod's.

They're unrelated words that underwent similar changes. Though I suppose that makes sense - Telugu is a phonetic language, and so it should be natural that these changes are based on the phonemes and stuff? (also I am aware that phonetic language isn't a techical term but bleh.)

okie that exhausts what I remember wanting to say and I can't be bothered to figure out a good ending or even edit, so uh.

2021: My year in kdramas

2021 has to be the year that I watched, re-watched and dropped the most of amount of dramas. Up until 2020, I mainly lived in the romance section of dramaland until the disappointing offerings of last year inevitably pushed me to expand into sageuks, comedies, legal dramas, murder mysteries, thrillers and everything in between.

tldr: watch inspector koo, run on, diary of a prosecutor and the school nurse files.

This is less a drama review and more a review of my drama watching feelings:

Romances— Starting with this to ask, man, what was in the water this year? Tasted like a particularly strong distaste for women in the one genre that usually gives them the most room to breathe. My viewings are mainly a list of what I dropped when: She Would Never Know (dropped halfway), Anti-fan (watched for Sooyoung, no one else needs to endure this), My Roommate is a Gumiho (dropped, I don’t care about more Gumiho trauma, didn’t we already do Tale of the Nine-Tailed), True Beauty (for a hot second I was very taken by a very hot Hwang In youp in this Korean Student of the Year, dropped at ep 14) Hometown Cha Cha Cha (dropped at ep 12, I’m wrestling with a long rant about this which I will post when it’s readable, but it’s a strong NO from me), Yumi’s Cells (dropped halfway, read the webtoon so it was fun to see how they transplanted the cells but the romance is SO MUCH UNIMAGINATIVE HETEROSEXUAL CLICHE and in defiance of everything that makes a great Kdrama romance, I just couldn’t).

My biggest disappointment was probably Nevertheless. It’s in this section but I refuse to call it a romance. I really enjoyed the first half of this show despite having my guard high up and then it inevitably floundered what it had to say about young love and toxic relationships by overriding what the webtoon maker intended and what the show itself was laying out. And for what? Literally no woman on this gets any respite except for the two BFFs who fall in love. This show could benefit from pretending the last episode does not exist.

To all these makers, I ask, why would you do this to our heroines? *shakes fist* I’ve worried how Netflix and expanded international viewing could erode Kdrama storytelling, particularly in rom-coms. And it’s not because I don’t want them to experiment or flip the trope table. It’s just that past a certain popularity threshold, Netflix stories seem to get washed out, slicker in visuals but flatter in narrative. And I so don’t want Kdrama rom-coms to lose what makes them so delicious. Alternatively, I’ll dig back into older shows and hopefully keep finding more treasures.

I thought the romance in Dali and the Cocky Prince was pure cotton candy in a very makjang-y plot and I loved it except for one very questionable Kim Min jae dialogue. I’ve been waiting for lead role Kim Gyu young and I only say more, more, MORE.

But really the one drama that actually saved this genre for me this year was Run On and I’m glad I waited to watch it when I could really take it in. It is so well-written, performed and made. Smart and warm is rare and not easy to do and writer Park Shi hyun deserves everything for this. What’s done so well is how the story, its themes and character relationships are developed through language and movement. (The FL is a translator and the ML is an athlete.) Every Kdrama trope is probably in there and the writer is very clever about how she uses them. Love it! May eonni FTW.

Best dramas — Kooky, fun, smart and feminist, I think The School Nurse Files and Inspector Koo are the rare dramas that actually deserve a second season but I’d gladly go back to revel in all the absurdity of the one we have. Also, I literally do not know how to describe them beyond basic plot, so I just go around whispering them as recommendations to possible converts.

D.P. was hard to watch. Jung Hae in, Koo Kyo Hwan and Kim Sung hyun make it slightly easier to get through this ugly vortex of masculinity, power, obedience, compliance and duty. I’m jealous of how this industry gets to make a military drama like this.

I was so surprised by how good Diary of a Prosecutor was. On the surface, it shares elements with HCCC in that a purportedly snobby, smart woman unwillingly comes from Seoul to the countryside for work and is at loggerheads with the easygoing, son-of-the-soil hero. Except unlike Homecha, DoaP takes this tension and conflict to its realistic conclusions, doing justice to where these characters come from and where they end up. I enjoyed it so much. I particularly enjoyed the treatment of Cha Myung joo and how Jung Ryeo won played her. I thought it very fitting how much insight we are and are not offered into her. (Finger hearts for the writer!)

Age of Youth is not from this year but from the same writer who has quickly become a favourite of mine. I love how she sprinkles horror elements in a comedy drama about young women. The horror being the missteps/mistakes we make and how they haunt us. This combination of actresses was great. Han Yeri and Park Eun bin, please reunite!

Sageuks — This genre were a real eye-opener for me in how much they can encompass. I thought I was in for boring historicals, but they can be fun? Shin Hye sun is a walking theatre company unto herself in Mr Queen/Queen Cheorin and I think everyone should watch her run the show in this. Similarly, I think The Crowned Clown deserves a watch for Yeo Jin goo’s performance but unlike Queen Cheorin I wasn’t fully sold on the politics of the show because it’s a little wishy-washy about what exactly it is beyond the defiance of an existing system. That said, the plot did keep me engaged throughout.

Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryeong was excellent and cemented my love for Shin Se kyung. Cha Eun woo needs to do more unconventional heroes because he clearly has fun with them. Fantasy sageuks have fun in a way that even regular dramas don’t. And the fantasy is in not sticking to only that which is plausible.

I love Park Eun bin and for her I wanted to love The King’s Affection just as much. I mean she’s great in this, the problem is that the plot itself waffles on where to go and what to foreground when. I never thought I’d ask for more court politics over romance but I think this show shines in ep 11 and 12 when it balances both along with scenes of lightness and heavy drama. The second half of the show is stronger for it. But I really wanted more of Eun bin’s court and her political journey, the plans and contingency plans she was making for the many ways her future could unfold. Many points for being gay.

Bossam, on the other hand, was great fun for a while, including its politics and palace intrigue. Post episode 12 though, you realise the fun was in how much of the show takes place in villages or with the leads on the run and once that goes away, so does the fun. But all of the countryside shenanigans I craved, I got in Secret Royal Inspector & Joy. This show just lets its characters run wild and do anything they can or want, occasionally fall into traps, wrestle out of them and go back to more shenanigans. I love Kim Hye yoon as the loud, street and book-smart, divorced woman. Ok Taecyeon is literally a cartoon and my prime example for how much fun and range actors can have if they choose roles that are not inscrutable heroes/placid beauties. I still haven’t finished watching this but the general lesson for a good sageuk is to have the heroine’s active participation, don’t phase them out from all that intrigue. Bonus points for sexy Lee Joon hyuk cameo

I haven’t watched the sageuk of the year Red Sleeve. I’ll probably leave it for a binge in 2022.

BLs+web dramas — Light on Me and To My Star were the only BLs I watched, and the latter was super cute. If we must have mythical creatures fall in love with humans, let it be Kiss Goblin.

Comedy — I don’t think I’ve laughed during a kdrama as much as I did in the first half of Welcome to Waikiki. No character knows what they’re doing and everyone’s out of step with regular life. It falls into the trappings of the stereotypes it flouted and becomes more predictable in the second half, but it was still fun.

Blockbuster shows— I haven’t watched Squid Games and will probably come back to watch it when the world has forgotten about it. The weekly experience of collectively watching Vincenzo was very fun and I maintain that it is what it is because of how Jean Yeo bin plays Hong Cha young and the director-writer’s love for the Geumga plaza family. I devoured fan fic of this for a while (recommended).

Despite some quibbles, Hospital Playlist season 1 was such a warm cocoon for me that I was really looking forward to the second one. HP 2, however, turned those quibbles into huge disappointment. What S1 did really well was build background, relationships, character dynamics and motivations episode by episode, keeping us invested in the choices they made and the connections they developed. S2 didn’t build on any of that and instead gave us more of the same but with uneven plotting, pacing and a moral ground so high, I have a crick in my neck.

Dramas— Law School, for me, was half intriguing and half grating. I wanted more of the women and less of the posturing men. I will always love Ryu Hye young. Devil Judge played me with its facade of something substantial to say and then set it all on fire to stay nothing means anything *eyeroll*. Jeong Seona is queen of everything.

Watch Mad for Each Other for Oh Yeon seo and Gil Hae Yeon. I love every character (except the hero) but they, in particular, are amazing. Longer notes on the show here.

I binged Stove League in my love for Park Eun bin. The show itself was alright.

Murder mysteries/crime dramas — These were my go-to for high stress weeks. I found them very cathartic for peak anxiety. But I wouldn’t recommend everything I watched. Beyond Evil’s characters were compelling and its shock value was a great stress buster for me but I’d recommend reading these two reviews if you want to watch it critically (here and here). I watched Good Detective in a post vaccine delirium, perhaps the only way to watch it.

Two dramas I can recommend are Stranger 2 because Cho Seung woo, Bae Doona, Jean Hye jin and, maybe, everybody? He is Psychometric is what happens when murder mysteries are made fun. The strange thing about this show is how delicate it is about character feelings, failings and how accepting of neurodivergence, and how frustrating when it plays so fast and loose with medical terms. Still worth a watch.

Speaking of worth a watch, I finished watching Signal this year and finally understood what people were saying about its plotting. It was very watchable for that and for Kim Hye soo, despite a surprisingly overwrought Lee Je hoon. I thought Kim Eun hee was one of the few writers coming through for me this year. I raced through all the Kingdoms in one weekend. And then she said hold your horses and gave me Jirisan. All of this is basically testament to how much her writing is also subject to the right treatment and the right director to elevate it. I have so many feelings for Jun Ji hyun and Ju Ji hoon in Jirisan and the show tried its best to stomp on them. Don’t watch, read these instead.

This year confirmed that the dramas I’d live in are Coffee Prince, Her Private Life and Flower Boy Next Door. I rewatched them all. *more finger hearts*

Honorary J drama mentions — Keita Hatsukoi which seems to be the Cherry Magic of this year. Alice in Borderland was fascinating to me for a while. I may have more solid feelings about this after season 2. But it’s part of a disheartening pattern in dramas taking strong source material and then flattening the women to inflate male feelings :/ Less of this in 2022 please.

My thoughts on Outlander. Buckle up, babe.

First of all, everyone I know except for me loves these books and this show. My closest friends LOVE this show. I know I am so very alone.

TW: mentions of sexual assault

Okay but here’s my numbered list:

1. Claire is Boring. She just is. She’s one of those heroines who is “headstrong” which translates to “dumb.” She has no reaction really to the things that surround her and I felt the show hugely skated past her grief at losing her husband. I just feel like I’ve met a character like her a dozen times before and I’m over it.

2. Jaime is Also Boring. Insert all of the above. He’s young and charismatic and angry and so is every male protagonist of every novel ever written. Thank you next.

3. Dougal is clearly the sexiest character on this show and no one agrees with me even though I am CLEARLY correct.

3a. If you’re going to fall in love with a problematic Scottish man, make it be DOUGAL. I will never understand why she turned him down lol. That could have been so interesting 😭😭😭 enemies to lovers ftw.

4. All the side characters are 7000x more interesting and compelling than the main couple. Geilish/Dougal is a GREAT pairing btw—he’s the frustrated rebellious brother of the laird and she’s a time traveling pagan witch lady like. I want to know their love story. The laird lives with a visible disability and commands the respect of his men—what’s his story? He clearly loves his wife—what about their marriage? The English doctor dude? He’s cool. The guy who wanders the heath. What’s going on with him? I basically care much more about everyone else EXCEPT jaime and Claire but those characters are shoved aside again and again to make room for what? Jaime does something stupid or Claire does something stupid or he has to whisper Sassenach in her ear or something.

5. The amount of sexual assault on this show is just—so. much. Like gratuitous. I have a pretty high squick threshold but my LORD IN HEAVEN. They invested an entire episode into an extremely graphic assault and then the next season—all Jaime needed was some good Heterosexual Monogamous Love and he’s fine, I guess. They made some effort to show trauma but not enough to justify spending like 45 minutes exclusively focused on extended scenes of sexual violence. Claire gets assaulted like 5 times. I guess (spoiler) something happens at the end of season 5 and she’s dealing with the fall out of that in the newest season but it’s like—how is this different than any other thing that’s happened to you for like 10 years.

6. Frank is great actually? They have a heathy, mutually satisfactory sex life. He’s supportive of her. He’s intelligent. And most importantly, he comes from a time with indoor plumbing, vaccines, and cars. Like I am sorry but there is no love—I don’t CARE if this Scottish man is my soulmate—I am LEAPING at the chance to get back to the 20th century lol.

7. The entire Bugle Boy subplot made me want to curl up and DIE

8. The reunion scene between Frank and Claire had so much potential to be interesting and it’s so frustrating because it’s NOT. Like this is a situation where she is seeing a man who she LOVED who had a startling resemblance to a man who horribly abused her family, she’s split between two places. Like there’s so much meat there and it’s—they erased all the nuance of the situation and I am so sad.

9. Queer coded people are only good to be villains who are creepy on the Good Straight Men and die in horribly violent ways. Like I don’t think all queer people should be good in media. But when every single gay character is…a psychopath? Ummmm. Also, distinct lack of lesbians. (This could be different in later seasons but that’s the trend in the earlier parts)

10. The whole we’re going to save highland culture thing by making Culloden happen is dumb. Claire, you know how you save highland culture—maybe learn to speak the language lol? For someone concerned with cultural heritage management, this woman isn’t that concerned with learning much about them. Maybe, concentrate on preserving Highland traditions when you get back to the 20th century? The best way to save the highland culture is to actually engage with it, Claire.

11. Am I the only one who remembers when Jaime non consensually beats his wife? Just me? Okay, just me.

i saw your reblog of the Spencer giving Aaron a father's day card thing and i can't stop thinking about how Aaron is the father figure to the entire team now.

(yes I'm also especially thinking about that one scene of Spencer and Derek stuck in the malfunctioning lift shrieking for Aaron just because. 🥴 dad!Hotch ftw!!!!!)

i know this concept has probably been done hundreds of times already but imagine: (SORRY THIS IS GOING TO BE A REALLY LONG ASK, I deeply apologise in advance)

[tw food/eating habits, some references to murder cases because you know this is Criminal Minds, some slight spoilers for people who haven't really watched the show and also reference & mention of autism & a character on the autism spectrum -> just a heads up, a disclaimer, I'm in no way diagnosed with autism, so if i have misrepresented autism, or made any mistakes, i apologise, it wasn't my intention, and i welcome all feedback & criticism — i genuinely want to learn]

a year after Spencer joins the BAU, Aaron notices & becomes very concerned over Spencer's (super bad) eating habits aka him only drinking coffee and forgetting to eat actual proper food when he gets absorbed in cases or research or reading etc -> which results in Aaron absolutely being like "hey Spencer let's grab lunch together" almost everyday just so Spencer eats (healthy, full meals)

(also Spencer picking up on this after Aaron "casually" gets him lunch/treats him to dinner/invites him over for meals for almost every day of the week and he was initially almost irritated/offended until he realised he could use Aaron's habit to make Aaron himself eat properly too because this hypocritical bastard doesn't eat properly himself either so every alternate day you can see Spencer purposely not going for lunch breaks while sneaking glances at Aaron's office just waiting for him to notice and drag them both to lunch together 😌)

also I really think Spencer is on the autistic spectrum (high functioning, imo, but I'm not really sure how this works, and I'd have to do more research) so I'd like to imagine Aaron knows that too because he's noticed Spencer's behaviors + Spencer got an official diagnosis and told him about it maybe 6-7 months into joining the BAU so I really think Aaron lets Spencer stim (physically, his hand gestures) on their lunch break because he knows that Spencer can't really do that in front of the others, so even when they're on cases, he would take Spencer out either for a private lunch or dinner or something, just the two of them, and he'd let Spencer stim & talk about any subject of his fancy as much as he wants to (I'm pretty sure someone wrote a fic like this and I absolutely can't remember the name or the author but I really LOVED the idea too)

initially Spencer was really taken aback too, because you know, this isn't something you do with your boss, of all people, but Hotch had always meant what he says and his facial expression and body language suggested that he was being absolutely sincere and serious about this, so Spencer tentatively started talking, and as their meal progressed, he eventually got comfortable enough to just go on, and not once did Aaron cut him off rudely, until the end of their meal, when Aaron couldn't continue to pretend to drink his soup because he'd finished it somehow with those incredibly small spoonfuls, and he'd had to gently tell Spencer that they had to go back, but Spencer wasn't upset, because he'd just got over an hour to talk about this recent seminar about the connection of ancient Greek mythology to the developments of the society in ancient Greece which no one had ever done for him before and he's full, satisfied and beyond elated because Hotch really didn't have to do this, but he did anyways

at first it was just something between them but eventually Derek noticed & like in the end I think it's a kind of open secret between Aaron, Spencer & Derek and now when Derek notices Aaron doing it he gives Aaron a small nod and he wards off & deals with the questions that the others have when they inevitably notices the private meals Aaron & Spencer has

speaking of Derek, Aaron definitely has 1 on 1 time with Derek too, but doing different things. Derek's thing is sports & home renovations, and he repairs/maintains cars & bikes when he can, and I like to imagine Aaron knowing about his hobbies and casually asking Derek about the home renovation he's working on one time (before or early S1) Derek came into his office to submit a case file, and Derek being kind of shocked/caught by surprised initially (because he knows Hotch has a soft spot for the kid because he's much younger and much, much more inexperienced but Derek's older and should know better, so Hotch won't do the whole private lunch thing with him, right?) but then he grins and starts telling Aaron about how "I got that place absolutely shining right now, man" and then he invites Aaron over to take a look at the place out of courtesy/habit (his mama raised him as a good, polite young man, and no way Hotch would even say yes right?) and to his surprise once again, Aaron does accept his invitation

after that one time, Aaron begins casually asking him about his projects and even starts offering to help him do some of the painting and decorating (to be fair, it calms Aaron too, to have a getaway from Haley and initially from the crying baby, because while he absolutely loved Haley and Jack with all his heart, some days, some days he just couldn't take it, all the stress from Strauss and from trying to be a good father unlike his own, and he had to take some time off to himself, and painting walls is calming and therapeutic to him in some sense) & Derek and Aaron start bonding over hotdogs while sitting out on the front porch of some halfway remodelled house, talking about the latest sports news (they support different baseball teams but that's okay, because Derek gets to grin at Hotch and ask him to pay up when Hotch's team loses to his, and Aaron gets to raise his eyebrows with that small knowing smirk of his and ask Derek to "complete this by the next weekend, will you" when Derek's team loses to his)

when Aaron recruits Penelope, he's read her file, or what little the FBI's cyberteam got on her anyways. he knows the Black Queen's reputation, and he knows that the cyberteam really don't trust her and recommended high levels of surveillance, but the moment he saw her through the glass of the interrogation room and her resume & application on pink paper, he knew that she's not just what the file said she is. initially, she sticks to the "bureau regulated office attire" because you know, Penelope knows she's lucky, she should've been jailed for what she did, she was jailed, until this Aaron Hotchner guy decided, somehow, that she was deserving to be on his team, even after looking at her resume, which she had written on pink paper out of pure spite (because nothing in the FBI rulebooks said anything about submitting your application on specialized coloured paper anyways) but she was moody and unhappy because she's stuck in this tiny office having to answer the phone whenever agents called to ask for details on icky, gruesome murders and disgusting, vile murderers so she decides that hey, since no one ever comes in here anyways, she might as well do some re-decorating right? so she starts bringing in her own soft toys and figurines and starts amassing a whole collection of soft, plushy, and colourful toys in because it's her office and if she has to deal with all these yucky stuff on a daily basis she's going to make it at least bearable to be in here

one day, some tall, stern looking guy just comes into her office with this Tupperware in his hands saying "hey, Garcia right? my wife made some extra cupcakes for the team, you want some?" and she asks "do i know you?" and he blinks, stands there for one, two seconds before- "sorry, i forgot we haven't actually met. Special Supervisory Agent Aaron Hotchner, assistant unit chief of BAU Team 1, nice to meet you," [i like to headcannon that before Boston & all, Hotch was Gideon's assistant, some kind of assistant unit chief probably, but while he wasn't yet the unit chief he was definitely taking care of most, if not all of the administration matters i.e. hiring new agents etc already because let's be real Gideon is caring & capable but really hands off sometimes (also in S1E1 Derek referred to Gideon as their Unit Chief so I assumed Hotch took over the position full time, officially somewhere between S1E1 and S1E2 or 3)]

and then Garcia's brain kind of short-circuits because holy shit this is her BOSS, aka the guy who somehow, crazily looked at her resume and decided to HIRE her and she just asked him if she knew him OH GOD ALL THOSE FIGURINES- and she tries to explain because she really didn't mean to break any rules with them and they aren't, are they? and she can remove them but just, please, she can't go back to prison.

but then Agent Hotchner just goes "hey, hey, Penelope. it's fine. I understand. this is your office, and you have the right to decorate it. I'm not going to fire you over.... My Little Ponies? and uh, some unicorns?" and Penelope can't help but laugh because he genuinely looks baffled by her collection on her desk, and did he just call her Penelope?

and after that, once, after a bad case that Aaron knew affected Penelope (it involved murdered parents & their only child left orphaned and it just hit too close to home for Penelope), he stopped by a local toy shop and bought the brightest, most sparkly, most colourful thing he could find in there (it ended up being a small figurine of a princess on a small, detachable throne that could light up and play some really funky pop music. Aaron cringed internally as he brought it over to the counter, and awkwardly nodded as the cashier asked, "buying this for your daughter, sir? she's going to love it, it's the latest in a collectable series" and he pretended to not see the questioning eyebrow that Derek gave him after seeing the package) and when he presented it to Penelope when they got back, he got the biggest and most bone crushing hug ever from Penelope because "aw that's so sweet, thank you! and you got me the latest in the collection! it's limited edition!" and it just ended up becoming a tradition — Penelope always looks forward to the end of a case now, not only because that means her people are coming home, safe, in one piece (sometimes debatable but still, they're coming home, to her) but it also means that Hotch has brought her yet another tiny figurine or souvenir to add to her collection and she can't wait to see what it is, and Hotch always, always, finds the time after they've wrapped up the case, before the jet leaves, to pop by a local toy shop to get both Penelope and later, when he's older, Jack some toys or souvenir from wherever state he's in, because he wants both of them to know, that despite all the bad out there, there is still good in the world, and they should never forget that

Oh my god, I love that scene. It came up in a TikTok about ships, because Person A and Person B are both very smart when they're alone, but put them together and it cancels out, and it made me laugh.

I also love Dad Hotch. Like I love him as much as I love "fighting to keep his emotions in check because he needs to be a leader, but you can tell from the slight change in tone, or the slight glaze of his eyes that he's seconds away from crying" Hotch. Which is saying something.

Oh I love how much Hotch cares about Reid, and of course Reid uses it to his advantage to get Hotch to do the same, because they're similar in that way. Also, he would definitely start grinning when Hotch looks down at his empty plate like: oh. Platonic Hotchreid is everything to me, because it's these two people that have been caretakers their entire life trying to look after another person that wouldn't let anyone do that and it's just... the HOTCH ANGST POTENTIAL THAT IS SO UNTAPPED!!!

Also, not a criticism of you, but from what I've heard from people is that functioning labels are harmful and shouldn't be used because it misrepresents the situation!

I love that idea though!! And Derek being protective over them so he's just like: no, you won't interrupt them, and I will take control of the situation for a few hours AAH!!

OH I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT MORGAN AND HOTCH BONDING!! It's so perfect!! I love the idea of Morgan teaching Hotch to do things, and Hotch realising how relaxing he finds it to do these things.

And because we can't have nice things: he refuses to go after Foyet breaks into his apartment because he doesn't deserve peace, but then Morgan just uses his key, drags him out, takes him to a house and presses a brush into his hand because he's not going to let his friend self destruct like this.

EVERYTHING ABOUT GARCIA!! OH MY GOD!! I need to get some work done, so I'm going to finish up there, but seriously!! Amazing!! I love the idea of Hotch getting her little figurines and stuff <33

i watched the ep twice bc i didnt take notes the first time BUT. hsmtmts 2.04 thoughts under the cut

gina first. my favorite part of the episode was when she admitted that she feels out of place living in someone else’s house and that she wanted a bigger part in the play. i was SO worried they were gonna just let her happily sideline herself in a “yay she learned her lesson about not being the center of attention” kind of way bc i would not be able to handle that two seasons in a row. let her be angry!!! she has a lot to be upset about

the gina/carlos conflict was awful bc theyre making carlos unreasonably annoying this season. last season he was nice, he was enthusiastic, not competitive and just rooting for other people. idk why they needed to flip him so drastically to being spoiled, rich, selfish, pushy, and bitchy. and on top of that i have not been vibing with the pieces of dialogue theyve been giving him this season just to score woke points. its so unbearably obvious that even though hes a brown gay character, he was written by a white gay person who thought, on some level, that he was giving the gen z kids the #hashtag representation they wanted. his delivery of every line that screams “remember, im mexican” is so awkward, it doesnt land well, and im begging them to stop. they want so badly to commodify his character and parade him around as a “look how diverse our show is!” thing and im so so sick of it bc you can tell, with all the surface-level pieces of dialogue, that they dont actually care at all

(”look around, theres not a lot of me at this school” we GET it, this show wants to be glee so bad)

im honestly starting to slowly ship rina less and less. in season one i loved seeing someone make gina happy, especially since she had no friends before opening up to ricky. but now its just a whole mess and i wish she would love herself a lil more to realize that its not worth all this stress. he made a choice and no amount of conflicted moments of eye contact is going to fully take that back. im not necessarily against love triangle plots, but i HATE the whole “women wait around hopefully while male character, whose decisions have already hurt multiple people, makes up his mind” bullshit

that being said, gina handled the situation like a CHAMP, im dying over how quickly she was able to mask her pain and make the joke about the twix bar. im love her

we were absolutely ROBBED of an ej/big red performance this episode!!! i am at my LIMIT we better get gaston next week or i will riot

on the ej train, him not getting into duke was extremely predictable. we all kinda saw that coming and knew that would be his main point of growth this season. im glad they didnt wait super long to do it. now please @ writers i am BEGGING you to give my man more screen time than one scene per episode

its very odd that they keep making mr mazzara have emotionally tough conversations with the students. i will do a parallel gifset of those once the season ends. i liked his convo with ej for the most part, but he really didnt have to beat him over the head with the “youre an emotionless robot” thing again. its clear ej is gonna throw himself into av club or whatever (even though at the end of last season that was supposed to be big red?) and discover that he has a lot going for him. because he does, he literally has everything going for him, thats why they had to make his “problem” not knowing himself. bisexual ej caswell ftw

i love the parallels between ej and nini this episode? i think since the beginning ive felt that there was a lot about them under the surface that was similar. it was interesting seeing ej tell nini about duke first, instead of the obvious choice of ashlyn. i wouldve loved to see how that scene wouldve gone with ricky, gina, carlos, or big red though bc each reaction and attempt at comforting him wouldve been so different. i didnt love that nini had to be pulled away from the conversation, but im glad they can still talk to each other after everything that went down. and i love the juxtaposition of ej’s convo with mazzara directly following nini’s convo with miss jenn bc theyre essentially the same.

speaking of, i loved miss jenn in this episode. her stories are always so funny, but i loved seeing her care so much for nini and guide her, like a teacher. i loved how she pointed out that everyone who loves nini just wants her to be happy

im glad nini is leaving yac bc there was no good way to keep that up honestly. but im pretty annoyed that they were so obvious about it? like, they immediately made it the worst place in the world without exploring it very much. the place is super unrealistic, ive never been to drama school but im sure it wouldnt be like that. no creative arts place for KIDS would be so impossibly limiting. plus the weird bluish coloring in comparison to the nice warm tones of the rest of the show was, again, a dead giveaway. why send her to the school at all if it wasnt even gonna matter?

even though im glad nini left yac, im NOT looking forward to the way miss jenn is about to bend over backwards to put her in the play somehow. she plays obvious favorites and im so annoyed

(sidenote: nini just? decided to leave yac without consulting her parents??? ummm)

granted is a very good song, one of my faves so far

ricky deciding to tell nini he wants her to stay was stupid. what did he think that would accomplish? who in their right mind would drop out of a good school for you?

i loved when nini said yac was missing something, and miss jenn said “ricky” and nini said “you.” that was so so sweet and cute

i think the kourtney/howie thing is gonna grow on me. i hate amatonormativity so im not a big fan of them introducing a whole ass character exclusively so kourtney can have a love interest, but i loved the gesture he made of bringing her the pizzas and her flashcards. i feel like kourtneys love language is acts of service, and she was literally this meme when he did that for her:

i liked seeing ashlyn try to be there emotionally for gina! i want more of them together

overall this episode was okay. not enough songs, and i wish they were spreading out the emotional conversations through the season instead of packing them all into literally one episode, but what we did get was pretty good.

after watching the preview i see that next weeks episode is gonna be about carlos’s party, and i love party episodes. BUT i hope that after that ep we finally get an advancement on the north high stuff! i dont give too many fucks about lily, but i wanna see my son asher angel
