psst! heard you want to learn about romanian culture. how about some mythology today? did you know romanians had a bear god? still quite present, more as a motif than a deity...
MOȘ MARTIN,
a benevolent being, a protector of humans:
he has influence over Ursitoare (similar to The Faiths in greek myths - moire) and if the new born is oiled with bear's sweat they'll grow healthy and strong. also, bear's hair burned over the body was used as a cure for any disease (crema de gălbenele, varianta fum).
if a bear walks on your back, your back ach goes away, the romanians used to believe. at Priveghi (wake) bear-like masks guide the lost souls through the night. and to prepare for New Year's night, people dress in bear fur and dance and chant against evil spirits (we still do that on Christmas now).
it was common for people to name their kid Urs/Ursu (like the last name of our esc2022 guy) so that they'll be safe and watched over. there are also spells/chants to invoke the bear protection and people wore talsimans from bear teeth.
The Bear was celebrated in 1st August (Macavei) 12-14 November (Martinii de Toamna), 1-3 February (Martinii de Iarna), 2nd February (Bear Day) and the Bear Sunday (i don't know the date...). During these days people shouldn't say the word 'bear' so they came up with the name Moș Martin (other names for the bear god: The Old one - Ăl bătrân and Moșul - The old man). On Bear Day, meat was left in the woods as an offer, in thanks and gratitude.
Romanians based their weather predictions on when the bears walked out of their layers. Also, they used the bears mating and birthing seasons in agriculture, basing their calendar around it: before the Bear Day, the crops had to be harvested, for example.

*   𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐘𝐌𝐎𝐔𝐒 𝐀𝐒𝐊𝐄𝐃   :   Hey! I was wondering if I could get some occupation suggestions for a Selwyn OC! Thanks in advance this group looks amazing !
Tumblr media
thanks ! i don’t think that any surname in particular really fits any job ( aside from very obvious examples - a fudge is always gonna be funny in politics ), but i do think that since selwyn is a sacred 28 surname, there’s a pretty fun opportunity to do a wizengamot representative ( junior or otherwise, depending on their age ) with them ! do i really understand the wizengamot ? no ! do i like to think about the way old families probably just have automatic places on it ? yeah ! aside from that, i think it would be fun to have more ministry workers in general, especially obliviators, archivists, investigators, unspeakables and anyone from the improper use of magic and magical accidents & catastrophes offices ! it’d also be cool to have a stronger idea of the world beyond the ministry, and if the char is on the younger side, i love the idea of people working run of the mill jobs in a family run business - shopkeeps and / or wait staff on diagon alley or hogsmeade and stall owners on carkitt market, especially ! i could def go on but regardless of your choice, you’re not gonna go wrong !

BLOGGER JUST LIKE BOOGER LOL
I don’t know. lol Just wanting to come on here and write....
Last night I spent about 4-6 hours working on the website, FINALLY got the website looking and functioning normal!! YAY!! They can now search the aprons they need!! I AM SO HAPPY!!! and the colors look cool too. I am going to make many more changes soon!!  Like, the color of our shipping bags, more modernized thank you cards for our customers, and more deals!! I JUST CAN’T WAIT.
                                               A little about us!
We are a small business that was started by my grandmother (Dianna Barch). Sense I could remember grandma has been behind the sewing machine! She’s made dresses, costumes, and alterations to almost everything I wore and still wear to this day. She is a seamstress WIZARD! Grandma can honestly make anything. Even though she wouldn’t want me to tell everyone that. . .. lol
A little over 7 years ago, grandma was asked if she could bring an item to a breast cancer awareness fundraiser at a local pub. Of course, with grandma being as crafty and generous as she is, had gone home and thought. what would be a great item I could make to help raise money? And with all the material sitting there in her sewing room, she thought to herself why not try to make a breast cancer awareness server apron? That apron ended up raising the most money at the fundraiser! After that night, she had people calling her to make aprons for them! So many that we wanted to jump on a few selling sites to see if she could turn this into a business. and it worked out for her! She now sales more than a hundred of aprons a month on Etsy, has over three thousand 5-star reviews, and has her own webpage!! Grandma is killing the game!
I (her oldest granddaughter) joined her about 2 years ago.  This has been the hardest but most rewarding job I have ever had. My goal is to one day run this small business for my grandmother in her honor. She has been the best grandma any granddaughter could ask for! She has done so much for me, and even though nothing in this world could repay her. I want to build a legacy for her! She deserves it!

Howdy! I am considering submitting manuscripts I've written to a publisher or possibly self publishing. The publisher states on their website that authors must maintain an active social media presence. I'm not normally a social media type, Tumblr is my only one. What would you reccommend for such? Is it worth it to pay someone to make a website for me? Thanks and many virtual kisses for Dot and Deebs!
Honestly, I haven't submitted to a publisher since before a lot of modern social media existed. :D
It is my understanding, but this is secondhand information, that publishers want you to have either a twitter or a tiktok, preferably both, where you're frequently active and have a high follower count, because they want you to be able to publicize your book on it. One of many reasons I don't even consider trad publishing anymore is that I don't want to spend a significant chunk of my time filming videos for the sole purpose of hawking my books.
Now, as I said, that's an inference I've drawn; you may want to speak to someone who has been trad published recently to get the inside scoop (readers if you work in publishing or have been published recently, feel free to add commentary; remember to comment or reblogs, as I don't repost asks sent in response to other asks). I do have an author website but I built my own; I don't know what the going rate is for paying someone to build one these days but most website platforms are pretty intuitive to use -- I built mine on Wordpress and I'm building a new one on Wix currently, and at this point both are very drag-and-drop oriented. I do think a website is a good thing for an author to have, but I wouldn't pay someone to build one for you until you've taken a swing at DIY and decided it's not where you want to spend your time and energy.
In terms of self-publishing, the good news is that none of the rules apply; this is also the bad news. :D Because the thing about selfpub is that you either pay or DIY for...everything. It can be very inexpensive; when I publish a book the only direct monetary cost is what I pay for an ISBN and a proof copy of the book, which I will make back in the first 10 sales or so. However, I am "paying" in man hours in terms of typesetting, cover design, uploading the PDFs to lulu.com, proofing the initial copy, correcting the proof and reuploading (which usually involves further typesetting), and of course all the publicity -- website design and redesign, copywriting, tumblr posting. And while my profit per copy sold is well above what most authors with traditional publishers will make, that's because the publisher is doing a lot of the work for you. And, because I don't have an active twitter or tiktok or a publisher, my books are not very widely publicized. Undoubtedly I sell fewer copies than I would if I had a robust twitter following, but catch me touching that rancid wasteland without inch-thick gloves on.
So -- I think it's probably pretty important to understand that I have deliberately rejected trad publishing for good but not lucrative reasons, and I'm considered at best an iconoclast and more commonly a crank for having done so. If you can go the tradpub route, I would, but I also wouldn't put any money you're not prepared to write off as a loss into that pursuit. Definitely I would see if there's anyone in the industry you can reach out to who can answer these questions with a more thorough understanding of what publishers look for in an author and how to go about achieving that than I possess.
In any case, good luck! It's a journey regardless and I hope you enjoy your time on the path wherever you end up. And I'll give the cryptids a special cuddle for ya.

We must strategically focus on a relatively smaller number of carefully selected companies and products for maximum impact. Companies that play a clear and direct role in Israel’s crimes and where there is real potential for winning, as was the case with, among others, G4S, Veolia, Orange, Ben & Jerry’s and Pillsbury. Compelling huge, complicit companies, through strategic and context-sensitive boycott and divestment campaigns, to end their complicity in Israeli apartheid and war crimes against Palestinians sends a very powerful message to hundreds of other complicit companies that “your time will come, so get out before it’s too late!” Many of the prohibitively long lists going viral on social media do the exact opposite of this strategic and impactful approach. They include hundreds of companies, many without credible evidence of their connection to Israel’s regime of oppression against Palestinians, making them ineffective.
Tumblr media
Consumer boycott targets - The BDS movement calls for a complete boycott of these brands carefully selected due to the company's proven record of complicity in Israeli apartheid. (Siemens, Puma, Carrefour, AXA, Hewlett Packard (HP), SodaStream, Ahava, RE/MAX, Israeli produce in your supermarkets)
Divestment targets - The BDS movement is pressuring governments, institutions and investment funds to exclude and divest from as many complicit companies as practical, especially weapons manufacturers, banks, and companies listed in the UN database of business involved in Israel’s illegal settlement enterprise, as well as the WhoProfits and AFSC Investigate databases of companies enabling the occupation. Below we give some of the targets we are campaigning against. (Elbit Systems, HD Hyundai/Volvo/CAT/JCB, Barclays, CAF, Chevron, HikVision, TKH Security)
Pressure (non-boycott) targets - The BDS movement actively calls for pressure campaigns against these brands and services due to their complicity in Israeli apartheid. We have not, on strategic grounds, called for a boycott of these brands and services, instead we strategically call on supporters and institutions to mount other forms of pressure on them until they end their complicity in Israeli apartheid. (Google and Amazon, Airbnb/Booking/Expedia, Disney)
Organic boycott targets - The BDS movement did not initiate these grassroots boycott campaigns but is in support of them due to these brands openly supporting Israel’s genocide against Palestinians. (McDonald's, Burger King, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, WIX, etc)
— From the BDS Movement Website, originally posted November 5th 2023 and edited for clarification November 8th 2023

November 5th update on the official BDS Movement boycott to support Palestine:
Tumblr media
The BDS Movement have put out an explainer on what you should be boycotting and why, including a section on why a targeted boycott is being used.
"Many of the prohibitively long lists going viral on social media do the exact opposite of this strategic and impactful approach. They include hundreds of companies, many without credible evidence of their connection to Israel’s regime of oppression against Palestinians, making them ineffective."
The following are the current top priority boycott targets of the global BDS movement:
Consumer targets:
Siemens
PUMA
Carrefour
AXA
Hewlett Packard Inc (HP Inc)
SodaStream
Ahava
Israeli produce in your supermarkets
Corporate/Institutional boycott targets:
Elbit Systems
HD Hyundai/Volvo/CAT/JCB
Google and Amazon (join the No Tech For Apartheid campaign here)
Airbnb/Booking/Expedia
RE/MAX
Barclays
CAF
Chevron
HikVision
TKH Security
They also reference the grassroots organic boycotts of McDonald’s, Burger King, Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, WIX, etc.
"Remember, all Israeli banks and virtually all Israeli companies are complicit to some degree in Israel’s system of occupation and apartheid, and hundreds of international corporations and banks are also deeply complicit. We focus our boycotts on a small number of companies and products for maximum impact."
Please read the full article for an explanation of each boycott target, why a targetted boycott is being used, and more general information.
