#wip; orpheus’ epilogue

It always comes down to the classics, right? Orpheus and Eurydice, never knowing who will emerge from the darkness with you; Pandora's Box, and the things you can't undo.
Anyway, here's the finale and the coda (which is like an epilogue except it's a musical term; when you play a coda, you go back to the beginning again see what I did there) wherein I go completely off the rails into wild and speculative AU territory. Look at those new pairing tags. I can't believe I quoted The Last Unicorn in the chapter summary. Utterly shameless.
Extensive notes below the cut, because I like to hear myself talk.
Monk is like a baby butch trying desperately not to fumble this sad divorced cougar a second time. It's fine. They'll figure it out. They might even be good for each other; there certainly aren't very many things that would make either of them worse.
A silly little joke about tomatoes evolved into all of this. Over 9000 words! There are themes! Or an attempt at themes, anyway, and an attempt at laying the groundwork for some sort of narrative arc from beginning to end. I tried to make each character scene tie together in some way; I hope I succeeded.
Ninja still doesn't know how to spell PTSD; I should probably add Ninja/A Fucking Nap (unrequited) to the pairing tags.
Writing this was a blast, honestly. Embrace the cringe, be free, write it weird and self-indulgent and unhinged. I keep laughing at my own jokes; this is the longest piece of fanfic I have ever finished and published.
I still might write the sequel where Ninja gets pegged properly. He deserves something nice.
The real epilogue is actually just Shopkeeper and Phantom taking turns curb stomping Resh'an in the void, because if they have to learn to live with their inescapable grief, so does he. This all kind of ties into another WIP I have on deck- I have to make sure I don't just directly crib any Shopkeeper's lines for Resh'an, because they're both out here doing horrible things hoping that the end will someday bring an absolution for the things they've done.
It won't, and they just have to live with it, anyway. I was originally going to have Phantom get into that with Shopkeeper in the coda, but I wanted to wrap things up neatly.
"Of course I did. How could I have ever sent it to anyone else?" The final scene didn't originally have Shopkeeper doing a secret identity reveal, but then that line got suck in my head and I figured why not make everything even more fucked up. (Still firmly in speculative AU territory, really. I think it's more likely for Shopkeeper to be Phantom and Muse's kid than anything else, honestly.)
Okay, so here's Phantom, and this is Phantom's ex-wife, Shopkeeper, but it was an amicable divorce, they still hang out sometimes. And this is Shopkeeper's girlfriend, Monk, and Monk's hapless twunk Ninja (they are in a lesbian-centric semi-non-sexual throuple)-
Look, I think I am hilarious.
Shopkeeper and Monk mostly just flirted outrageously with each other back in the day. Monk is less concerned with romance than she is with being forgiven, which probably isn't clear enough in the story.
I'm still halfway convinced that I should reformat it as a one shot, but I also think I am very funny in some of those chapter notes, so I'll probably leave it. Over 9000 words!

Orpheus’ Epilogue— prologue?!
The me who isn’t me sits on my chest, her straw rattling around at the end of a red slurpee. Her lips are stained red, not a bright cherry, but a darker red. A blackened red.
A machine sits in the corner, churning blood and ice over and over in an endless hum.
A boy with shadows for hands stands in the corner, another with burning suns where he should have eyes is in the other. He does not speak, but flickers. There and then gone in an instant.
I hear screams. I hear someone shouting at the screams to shut up.
My throat is so dry I can almost feel the cool, refreshing dampness of the slurpee in my own mouth. The me who isn’t me continues drinking, each sip shooting a pulse of red through the clear tube. I swallow thickly. There is something in my throat.
I gag, choke. But nothing dislodges the unnatural full feeling. I can’t raise my arms. I can’t pull the straw out of my throat. The me who isn’t me smacks her lips, flicking drops of scarlet unto the white sheets tucked around me.
You ready yet?
She thinks for me, her mouth never once moving.
I’m so thirsty.
She smiles.
Yeah. You’re ready.
The slurpee is gone, her hands are empty, clasped together. She draws them apart, a tiny star suspended between her palms. The light begins to expand, growing and growing until it lifts my eyelids and shines directly into my pupil. I see her still in the dark of my closed eye. I see the face of someone wearing a surgical mask in the open one.
Ghostly dots of light dance over my vision. The ceiling is white. The voice is still there, still in my head and speaking with my words. It laughs at my confusion, my fumblings to make sense of what I am seeing and not seeing.
She sips from her straw again and as she swallows I feel like something in turn is pulled from my own throat, leaving me gaping and empty, gasping in air as cold as ice.
Welcome home.

Destiel Fic Recs
The toddler won't sleep. Sucks to be me, but good news for you because I have a fresh list of fic recs. A little something for everyone here.
"Bumper Cars" by mansikka (Explicit, 111k words)
A really satisfying case fic, especially if you are craving some early season, on the road style plot. Dean, Sam, and Cas investigate a haunted carnival. There is some great only one bed tropey goodness and they are idiots your honor. Sam ships it and has delightful sibling vibes. Highly recommended.
More below the cut
"Oh, Maybe It's Love?" by theweakestthing (Teen, 7,046)
A short but really sweet Cas POV fic. Cas tries to define what it is he feels for Dean.
"Keep Your Love Alive" by dothraki_shieldmaiden, FriendofCarlotta (Explicit, 42k words)
Canon compliant through the finale fix-it. Dean finds himself in Heaven, but something isn't adding up. Where is Cas? Where is everyone?
SPOILER. Look away.: This one's for the Dean is in the Empty truthers.
"hold onto your voice, hold onto your breath" by unicornpoe (Teen, 7k words)
Another fix-it (there can't be enough ways to overrule the writers in my book). I wrote: "absolutely beautiful" in my notes. It has Orpheus/Eurydice vibes.
"Yarrow, Lilac, and Foxglove" by ahurston (Explicit, 10k words)
A lovely "Cas gets a garden" fic. This is part 2, but works as a standalone. I haven't read part one yet, but I have no doubt it will also be amazing and soft. Ahurston really excels at writing sweet moments, so check out part 1 as well if you want another 9k of garden Cas.
This is set post canon and serves as a truly delightful soft epilogue.
"best friends without benefits" by lizbobjones (Explicit, 20k words)
Dean and Cas are morons who don't know how to use their words. Come get your repressed Dean bi disaster goodness in this case fic. This one is funny and stealthily romantic, plus Cas suggests they become "fuck buddies," which I am still recovering from.

"That Black Dog Ache" by SaltyWords (agent4hire22) (Explicit, 28k words)
Dean gets struck by a love spell and gets stuck in horny jail. When Cas shows up to offer assistance, things get complicated.
"The Distance Of The Setting Sun" by murron (Explicit, 17k words)
There is something soft and sweet about this fic. Set post S5, Cas, Dean, and Sam travel the world (aided by Cas’s ability to transport them). That's is. That's the fic. Just them traveling and resetting after the apocalypse.

WIP Recommendations
"Angels Don't Fear the Reaper" by you-cant-spell-subtext-without (ayreisha) (Mature)
Dean becomes Death to save Cas. Things go terribly wrong. This one is a really great concept done well and it is making me feel super angsty. I am really excited to see where it goes.
"The Unbroken" by Casblackfeathers (Explicit)
As you can see from this list, I am not a big AU fan, but this one is worth making an exception. This is a sweeping post apocalyptic zombie story. The Croatoan virus hit when Dean and Sam were kids and the world is overrun. It's fantastic.
"The Pull of Us" by Shelikestv (not rated)
This one makes me slightly feral and I am struggling to even describe it because it's very twisty and complex. Let's go with: it's a memory fic and a really good one inspired by some inconsistencies in the underlying show.
"Rockin the Suburbs" by chocolatecakecas
A fake relationship case fic featuring Baby Jack. What else could you want in life? Seriously. I do a little happy dance every time this one gets updated.
Authors of the WIPs tagged below if you want to follow them for updates.

Right so. There's a bunch of new folks around here thanks to the ever-delightful Shade Swift of the 99 Variety and I figured I oughta do some sort of intro post.
Hullo! I'm RedWinter or Red -- she/her, old enough to count as tumblr grandma or at least fun aunt. I've been following Hermitcraft for around three years (got into it with Mumbo, then branched out to Grian, then Iskall, and then it just kind of mooshroomed from there) but only got into the hermitblr community after 3rd Life hurt me so badly I had to share the pain with others. /lh
I reblog LOTS of art, along with happiness clips from various vids, vods, and streams (find them under the tag #happy file), and I'm a sucker for That Deep Hermitcraft Lore, so expect the occasional meta post. (I do also play MC constantly, so there's even some like... genuine Minecraft content in here.)
I wish I could do the art-ing, but my abilities lie more in the word-ing direction, so you can find my original content:
On AO3 as RedWinterRises
another hero, another mindless crime: Grian's 3rd Life brainchild has been hijacked and the players locked in a never-ending cycle of three lives.
The Last Night: The three people who experienced Scott's final death in 3rd Life... and the one who was waiting for him after.
baby's a red: Ren gave Martyn a choice... what if someone else had the same idea? aka: I was feeling Etho emotions.
earthbound: oneshot -- 3rd Life Grian misses his wings.
Immersive Hermitcraft: a collection of verbal paintings with ambient soundtracks placing you in the Hermitcraft universe.
Broken Red Line: Team ZIT angst fic (Zedaph is trapped, Tango and Impulse rush to free him)
Here on this blog under the tag #redwinterwrites
Untitled Etho and Bdubs h/c drabble
Nothing Gold Can Stay: Ren and Martyn are the last two in 3rd Life and it gets angsty fast.
a request for an alternate ending where Scar wins 3rd Life
Fixed Point (original): Ren and Martyn chill at Dogwarts
A requested epilogue to Broken Red Line
And an audio version of The Last Night can be found here on YouTube.
WIPs that I'll add to the list when they get finished/published include:
-follow me home: Orpheus and Eurodice but it's Martyn and his Red King
-blinded: a Ren-centric 3rd Life oneshot/character exploration
-Bloodstone AU?: not sure if this is a drabble or a couple of them in an au or what yet but basically Mumbo and Pearl are both vampires and the Pearl turns Wels and it's a thing you can blame on my followers because they did this to my brain.
-violet eyes and dragon wings: Grian steals an egg and gets more than he bargained for
-untitled Pearl-centric character piece: something something mythology something something new hermits
-The Widow's Revenge: another 3rd Life angsty death fic? In my WIP folder? It's more likely than you think. my therapist says i'm fine
Anyway -- yeah. That's me. :) I also take fic and mini-fic requests if anyone feels like hopping into my inbox at any point. <3

Chapter Titles Game
Created by @mvcreates where writeblrs share the chapter titles from one of our WIPs and provide as little or as much context as we desire about them.
Tocktick: An autistic aeronaut is plunged into a world of economic politics and old ghosts when he accepts a commission to compete in an international airship race alongside his crew of outcasts and societal dregs by ResidentoftheDisc/H.M
Chapters under the cut!
Note: Some of these titles are still works in progress. :)
1.     An Intriguing Proposition
Emmett is approached by Talas and Maia Katsaros with a way out of debt.
2.     Resurrection
Emmett comes across an old friend whom he believed was dead.
3.     Trailing Shadows
Secrets, secrets, secrets. Someone is watching the ship!
4.     New Heart and New Heights
The first flight of The Iris with her new engine.
5.     A Place at the Table
The other captains aren’t very nice.
6.     The Rock Agility Trials: Wyndcliff to Denburgh
The first leg of the race through a maze of rocks.
7.     A Lifetime of Compassion
Some of the captains are actually kind!
8.     The Blind Trials: Denburgh to Iz
Fly fast in fog. Good luck.
9.     The Ease of Sinning
Especially if you are literally considered a sin.
10.  The Endurance Trials: Stoke to South Isle
This is a long overnight leg.
11.  Competition’s Poisoned Chalice
It’s a pun. There’s poison.
12.  The Speed Trials: South Isle to Rodensbridge
Gotta go fast!
13.  A (Mostly) Unpleasant Party
A ball which pretty much none of our heroes enjoy. Someone throws up and it's not completely because of the drinks.
14.  The Storm Trials: Rodensbridge to Harvest Isle
Fly fast through magical storms which could make your ship explode!
15.  Walking in the Pages of History
Again, double meaning, on one hand their new engine is history happening and one of our characters goes back to her childhood home.
16.  The Night Raid
A comedic fight scene with tiny, bloodthirsty cute bat-frog-Siamese cat monsters!
17.  The Narrow Agility Trials: Harvest Isle to Vale
Fly through cliffs with racing!
18.  Whiskey Stitches
Colloquialism, the alcohol one or more people consume while trying to heal past traumas or come to terms with one's own identity."
19.   Dead Days
Backstory, backstory, backstory, tragedy.
20.  The Speed Trials: Vale to Salt
Race!
21.  Last Offer
They have a chance to back out with some of their dignity and all their limbs.
22.  The Wind Agility Trials: Salt to Highcoast
You’re racing the wind in this one.
23.  Conditional Love/Who Am I?
Growing up is difficult when you realise part of your identity is a lie.
24.  Specimen Collection
Exactly as dehumanising as it sounds.
25.  And Orpheus Brought an Army
They’re going (in some cases back) into hell to save their friend.
26.  The Final Trial: From Highcoast to Home
This is the chance to win and change everyone’s ideas.
27.  Addendum
An epilogue of sorts.

First Line From an Old WIP Tag
I saw @elizabethsyson‘s post and considered myself tagged because I am a masochist. I picked the worst ones I could find for you lovely people.
Going through my old files was nauseating. I can’t believe I was one of those “3deep5me” kids. Oy.
I have thrown myself face first into my teenage writing hell to retrieve for you, like Orpheus marching out of the Underworld with his dead wife’s soul in tow, some grade A garbage:
A common belief among the fair gentry is the notion that the general public has a choice as to which path they may choose to take through life, a la Robert Frost.
Hurk.
If I remember correctly, this was a first person character piece that never went anywhere and remains abandoned to this day.
[EDIT: I LIED. I adapted this into a slightly more readable story for my first fiction workshop in college. What was I thinking, oh God.]
This is the worst one I could find. Most of my first lines were pretty bland, which was a little disappointing. And I wrote a lot of terrible poetry, good Lord.
Here’s the runner up:
My name is Sophie Ignis Crowe, and I was raised at a carnival. What a way to begin, eh?
I don’t know what shames me the most: the My Immortal naming convention (this girl could set herself on fire phoenix-style because of an alchemical accident that happened when she was a kid), the misplaced comma, or the graceless breaking of the 4th wall in a first person narrative. Or that this is the separate epilogue document to the story I turned in for class.
[While looking through my old, old, old files, I found the world building document for the fantasy novel I was gonna write when I was 15. There is a surprising amount of content for like, a whole week of commitment to writing it.]
Bilbo Taggins: @quilloftheclouds, @cawolters, @caffeinewitchcraft, @waterfallwritings, @aslanwrites, @katekyo-bitch-reborn, @piratequeenofpixies, @leave-her-a-tome, @the-story-archives, @klywrites, @inkpot-dreamer, @mvcreates, @hannahs-creations, @pens-swords-stuff, @writings-of-a-narwhal, @howtowritethings, @inexorableblob, @atbwrites, @writevevo, @elliswriting, @dogwrites, @writingonesdreams, @natalierosewrites and anyone else who wants to be brutally reminded of their excellent progress.

working title: Orpheus’ Epilogue genre: Modern Fantasy, Mystery, Dark/Light Academia, LGBT+ pov: third person limited, multiple POV status: zero draft goal: 20k, camp nano July ‘21 possible themes: loss, redemption, chosen family, duality, responsibility and the patterns and cycles we chose to repeat or break. content warning: death, depiction of transphobia, depiction of unhealthy family dynamics, classism, violence and mild sexual content.
summary: A casting of lots or a calculated risk? Eislie Bishop is not sure which best describes the magical ritual she participated in three years ago that shattered her mind and caused the disappearance of Akio Saito, the most skilled scholar of her age. Anthea College still mourns the loss of two of its brightest students… until a seemingly innocent clerical error results in Eislie’s return.
With memories resurfacing and a strange presence stalking the halls of Anthea, Eislie is offered a place back within their ranks in order to assist in solving the mystery of what transpired that day, forcing her to grapple with clues left by one of the most cunning and brilliant students Anthea has ever boasted— herself.
main cast of characters;
Eislie Bishop (she/her, 21); an easy-going girl with a sharp sense of humor.  After the events three years prior, she has no memory of Anthea College or her gift of extraordinary magical control. Uncovering the truth will require unraveling the trail left behind by her former-self, a series of breadcrumbs leading her back through memory and time to the darkest day of her life.
Sarina Galanos (she/her, 20); fun-loving and hedonistic, Sarina is the most popular girl at Anthea. Yet underneath the gloss, there is a former “gifted-child”, troubled by grief and mourning losses, both past and perceived future.
Kento Galanos (he/him, 20); quiet, terse and stand-offish, Ken is the opposite of his fraternal twin Sarina. Being the male scion of the Galanos family, he is burdened with great expectation, especially due to his rare hereditament, allowing him to amplify his and others magical ability. He has quietly gone along with his father’s wishes all his life, but that tension is building to a head.
Dante Abrams (he/him, 20); an extraverted and charming young black man from a family newly inducted into Anthea’s more prestigious ranks. He has been friends with Ken and Sarina since they were children and tries to mask the ever growing kernel of resentment he feels towards their inability to appreciate their life of privilege. He suffers from a lack of direction, trying to find his own place in a story that seems content to go on without him.
Ren Saito (he/they, 19); a brash and sharp-tongued trans man and the younger brother of Akio Saito. He too possesses a rare hereditament: precognition. His brother’s death left Ren the eldest of his family, forcing a responsibility upon him he does not want and does not align with his identity. Ren has done everything in his power to research his brother’s disappearance and refuses to believe he is truly gone.
Akio Saito, (he/him, 18 d?); though he has vanished, leaving no trace behind, Akio’s presence hangs heavy over the college like an oppressive phantom. Some claim to have seen him, wandering the halls of Anthea at night… but these are just rumors.

The irony is, I def set up the story to seem like Ken = Orpheus and Eislie = Eurydice... but in reality, Eislie is both Orpheus and Eurydice.

-- Orpheus’ Epilogue--
EISLIE
The iron gates were shut, words emblazoned on the sigil at its center reading bold and clear:
SALUS IN ARDUIS
It was the same words that had been written in neat, capitalized font on the single website Eislie had found for the college that claimed to lie within. From the bars, she could just barely make out the shape of buildings over the crest of a hill and down a dusty dirt road.
What she could not make out though, was a call box or any other means to let someone know she was here.
Which was typical. Any college that couldn’t even bother to update its website probably didn’t think much about simple, practical things like gate accessibility. The entire website, still up in a tab on Eislie’s phone, looked like something a middle schooler from 1997 would slap together on Geosites. Its background was a tiled with watermarked symbols of the school's emblem, a typically greek-esque laurel wreath around a barely discernible shield containing more symbols. Other than a brief box of text detailing the schools foundation date and location, Eislie had not found one contact number or email address. So it was safe to say the administration was stuck in the 90s too... or long gone.
A quick search however showed the school’s doors were still open and with a humble, yet respectable enrollment count of roughly 143 students and a staff of roughly eleven professors, not counting any assistants. There was even an on campus dormitory, a track and a respectable sports field, though the grainy photos on the website were from the early 1900s or perhaps even later.
A breeze cut the heat from the tendrils of August that clung still to the early September air, churning the otherwise stifling warmth into something tolerable. Eislie frowned, blowing a strand of brown hair from her face and turning back to look at her Uber driver, who was waiting patiently in the front seat of their sedan.
That she had even been able to find an Uber driver was a miracle in itself, the small town of Kilead the only sign of life within a several mile radius. That Eislie had never heard of it before, despite having lived barely an hour out of the way, was another peculiarity. It was as if, without even actively trying, both Kilead and Anthea College were absent from the notice of the rest of the world. Content to ignore and be ignored.
Even her driver had been perplexed at her directions, having to search his GPS numerous times for the town and eventually having to settle with dropping a pin in the nearest vicinity. What had started as a quaint ride however, Eislie could tell was quickly becoming a troublesome one. The driver poked his head out of his rolled down window, floppy blond hair carried up in a gust of wind.
“Yo— so you good? You want me to stick ‘round?”
He was no doubt, fresh outta high school, spending his last summer making a few quick bucks before starting his own college career. Decidedly not here by the way he wrinkled his nose at the uniforms and old-fashioned looking brick buildings on the website Eislie showed him at the beginning of the trip.
Eislie had hoped for a short visit, a quick stop and drop-- Hey you guys sent me a schedule and an alarmingly expensive bill, but I’m pretty sure I have never gone here so check your files. Please and thanks.
The letter and its envelope were tucked into her book bag, slung over both shoulders to keep from putting too much weight on either side and worsening her limp. That limp was also the reason for the Uber driver to begin with.
“No… I’ll be okay. I think I saw a local cab company when I was searching things out, so you can uh— go.”
Eislie had a feeling she’d regret this decision, even as the driver beamed, happy to be released. He gave her a short wave and rolled up his window, backing out from the shaded drive at breakneck speed. The sound of the revving engine sent a shudder down Eislie’s back. It had only been three years since her own accident, the one that had left her with a limp, a head full of fractured and faded memories and massive, sudden migraines.
The doctors had said she was a marvel, recovering her facilities and basic functions the fastest they had seen in an auto-related head injury. Eislie had long since grown past being self-conscious of the small burst of scar tissue on her left temple, receding her hairline right along the puffy skin. It was more annoying now than anything to have to recount the story of how she got it.
Long legging or jeans kept wandering eyes from the surgical scars on her leg where they had put her right shinbone back together and from the rather ugly and impressive one where the compound fracture had originated.
Eislie was grateful for the head injury for taking the memories of the impact and the pain with it.
The drive up to the buildings did not look overly long and she had a collapsible cane prepared should her leg start giving her trouble. The problem was, and remained, the gate.
Frowning, Eislie stepped forward, drawing her palm over the latin motto, running her thumb over the edge of the metal and noting the green smudge of barely-there moss on her skin.
This was a bad idea. Maybe if she acted quick she could get the Uber back and just go home. Send a strongly worded letter again and hope this time they stop sending her past-due notices and speeding her anxiety into hyperdrive.
Granted, how many Eislie Bishop’s were there in the world? It was entirely possible she had applied for classes at Anthea once, back in the dark space where her memories were fuzzy and faded like an under-exposed photograph. When she asked her mother on the subject, she’d brushed off her concern with stilted, clipped words. Not her usual response to Eislie’s attempts to get reassurance.
Leave it alone. Just ignore it. Miranda had said.
Eislie sighed and turned from the gate. Her foot caught her ankle, shorting the distance needed to lift passed. In an instant, her right leg fluttered and gave out, a swear managing to spit from her lips before she toppled backwards. Eislie twisted to grab onto the bars of the gate for support, another shocked shriek coming from her throat as the gates swung open, dragging her through the dirt.
Eislie blinked, pushing up onto her hands and knees and glaring down the open iron gate with a withering stare.
“No witnesses...” she murmured to herself, taking the opportunity to slip off her bag and take her cane out. Clearly she had misjudged her own clumsiness level for the day, a mistake she would not be making again.
Eislie brushed the dirt from her jeans and used her cane for support to rise back up to her feet. Turning one last time, she looked at the open gate and the road out from it. She shrugged and left it, minding her footing as she began the slow trek down the path and towards the college.
--
By the time she reached the crest of the hill, coming down onto the beautifully tended grounds of Anthea College, it had become obvious to Eislie that either the college boasted the most unfriendly assortment of students she had ever seen-- or she was genuinely not meant to be here.
The students were of a variety of ages, looking anywhere from late teens to late twenties, all wearing the same smart looking dark blazers and either slacks or a skirt in matching shades. Each jacket bore the same heraldry she had seen crowned in a laurel from the website, embroidered in gold, blue and red.
Each student also bore the same slack jawed expression at the sight of her, voices erupting into hushed whispers, eyes widened and some faces even paling. Eislie had never had such a welcome in her entire life, even when her scars were new and ugly and standing out red and angry across her skin. Not even when she was in her wheelchair, not even when she was relearning how to drink without a straw and constantly dribbling on her clothes.
Eislie, at first, did her best to keep her head high, eyes ahead, but after a constant stream of students taking wide steps from her approach and chatter breaking out the moment she passed she found it harder and harder to keep her eyes from her feet instead.
The buildings looked to all have been built around the same period, sturdy and well-made with rough, brown bricks. Ivy dominated the side of one building, it’s double doors were dated but handsome, the dark wood contrasting against its own bright brass hinges. A small plated sign left of the door read in plain lettering-- Administrative Building. If that wasn’t the office she needed, Eislie knew someone could probably point her in the right direction… and anything was preferable than continuing to be among so many gawking expressions.
Eislie carefully made her way up the small set of stairs, a slight ache making her lean a bit more onto her cane. The walk had not been unpleasant, but it had been quite a ways further than she had thought it would be.
Strangely, all feeling of exhaustion left her as she came to stand fully in front of the arched doorway. Eislie all at once felt something warm in her chest, a feeling of contentment, of comfort. It was as if, all at once, this was no stranger, but a familiar face. A peaceful place. A home. Eislie reached out and touched the curved handle and jumped when static sparked from her fingertips.
The air was not dry.
Eislie slowly reached for the door again, settling her palm onto the handle and her thumb upon the latch and found her thoughts forming together into a single phrase—
Welcome home...
But the voice was not of her own mind. It was softer, indiscernible in its gender or age. Eislie felt her eyelids droop and her body lighten as she pressed down the latch and pushed forward.
The door did not budge.
Before Eislie could even think to pull instead, the door abruptly opened outward, the heavy wood edge hitting into her and knocking her backwards.
Her reflexes had been enough to avoid injury, but not to avoid stumbling. Eislie dropped her cane, ready to try and break her fall backwards unto her bum and hoping to all the stars above that she did not topple right down the stairs.
But the impact never came. An arm roped around her waist and with it’s owners assistance, she righted herself within the circle of their grip.
The young man had held tightly to the opposite door handle to leverage them both, hoisting her hard against his chest.
“I’m so sorry!” Eislie burst out, desperately avoiding eye contact as she looked around for her dropped cane.
“I wasn’t paying attention, I apologize. I—”
The young man stopped, his own gaze taking in her appearance with quick successive glances. He had sharp grey eyes, framed by dark brows, both of which were slowly rising in the same look of bewilderment his fellow students had shared. In the grapple, a few strands of his smoothly gelled back hair had fallen into his face. He was handsome, that much went without saying, with a sharp nose that curved downward slightly and high cheekbones. Very Glory Days Gregory Peck, if Gregory’s Peck’s mother had been from Asia. The man he would become had not quite yet completely overtaken the boyish looks of his face.
In short, Eislie had no issue with his close proximity. A smile spread over her lips, rude manners of these Anthea kids be damned.
“Mutual apologies?” Eislie prompted when the young man did not speak again. He released her quickly, his expression not one of confusion anymore, but certainly not one of friendliness. Despite that, he picked up her cane and handed it back to her.
“Thanks! I’m actually looking for the enrollment office, I think I’ve been receiving someone else's mail and wow. They were not kidding when they called this place exclusive. Like, ‘could you add a couple more zero’s to the end of that balance’ right?”
“It’s inside.” the young man said curtly, stepping out of the way and holding the door open for her. He would not look at her, in fact, Eislie noted, his eyes were fixed on her cane. She could hardly blame him, it was a flashy design and had coloring as shiny and luminescent as an oil spill.
“Style and function, right?” Eislie said, trying to break the tension as she gave the cane a little wiggle. The young man looked at her then, something pained in the way he turned his lips down into a frown.
Yikes. Not her best material, she guessed. Eislie stepped through the doorway and turned back,
“Do you—”
But before she could get the question out, the young man had released the heavy door and it fell shut.
So much for hospitality.
