Managing my charity stall during Genshins Weinlesefest!

I’m having a fun time managing my own charity stall during the Weinlesefest festival within the event “Of Ballads and Brews”! It’s a peaceful and enjoyable little side game and section of the four quest sections which I’m having a good time with, bringing goodies to customers and sometimes free things. Business is running incredibly well for the moment and I’ve hit all of the tasks needed to be done.

For anyone who doesn’t know what Weinlesefest in the Genshin game is, it is a festival in Mondstadt revolving currently happening to do with making new wine and inviting the Anemo Archon (Venti/Barbatos) to drink if the Anemo Archon is happy with the wine.

Weinlesefests are a real life annual tradition in Germany's wine regions, such as the German Weinlesefest in Neustadt an der Weinstraße.

It has been joyous to learn new juice recipes and purchase them from the drinks stall too, and selling of produce I’ve foraged in exchange for currency. 😄

I think I could make a Dr. Pepper wine. This is my hamartia.

I gotta ask: what does Gnu Terry Pratchett mean? I'm only two books into discworld; is it a reference to something there? some fandom in-joke? or was the late Sir Pratchett especially fond of the g-nicest work of g-nature in the zoo?

It’s a bit of an in-joke, I guess. In-memoriam, maybe?

The long version is that it’s a reference to a bit in Going Postal, one of the later Discworld books. In Going Postal there’s a lot of focus on the Clacks system, a sort of pseudo-telegram system run by people up in boxes on the tops of towers who send messages from one corner of the Discworld to the other by flashing semaphore codes to the next tower in the line.

In Going Postal, a new company has bought out the Clacks and is running it at high-speed at all times, even as the operators are dying of the company’s negligence to make ends meet, and the plot of the book is basically about restarting the city’s old postal service to break the company’s monopoly on long-distance communication.

It’s a fantastic Discworld book, by the way. It was my sister’s first Discworld book and she quotes it at me constantly. If you aren’t doing a publishing order read, it’s a great book to check out.

The point is that halfway through the book, we see a scene set inside one of the Clacks towers, where one young Clacks operator sees a code go through the semaphore again. She recognizes it as a “GNU” code - a code that means that the message goes ahead to the next tower (G), is not logged (N), and is turned around at the end of the line to go through the entire semaphore system again (U), but the whole message is just GNU and a name, meaning that it’s a name that just goes up and down the line constantly.

The name is that of an inventor who tried to start a rival semaphore system and was murdered by the new Clacks company so they could keep their monopoly. And the oldest Clacks operator in the tower (he’s called Grandad — he’s twenty-six) says that so long as the name goes through the Clacks, he stays alive in the semaphore:

“His name is in the code, in the wind in the rigging and the shutters. Haven’t you ever heard the saying: ‘A man’s not dead while his name is still spoken’?”

Make things. Make things that you can share with your friends and those you care for. I made, in a fit of brewing madness, a burnt mead (not actually burnt, just caramelized honey) and gave a bottle to my friends as a housewarming gift. 9 years later, on a cold winter night while we all ate takeout, my friend produced the bottle with a flourish and a smile. We drank delicious, smooth, caramelized and sunshine-y mead and talked about how things have changed, how we had changed, and how we care for each other. Make things and share them with people you care about.

A nasty, bitter sentiment that I know in my heart was common among the umanyar who knew Finwe, especially among the sindar:

Of course the man who forgot (abandoned) Elwe for the sparkling new allure of Aman would also forget (abandon) miriel for someone fresh and new like Indis. Would forget the dead and stolen of Cuivienen in favor of the political path of least resistance and invite Melkor into his city.

Forbidden Rice Wine & Maple Wine Update

I strained the forbidden rice wine (made from Dongbei black glutinous rice aka "forbidden" rice) today with a nut milk bag. Way more labor intensive than I anticipated squeezing all the liquid out, and clean-up was a pain. My fingers were all wrinkled by the time I was done. The jar ended up a little over ¾ full after straining, and then I added a couple glasses of water. It still tastes a bit sweet so I don’t think it’s quite done fermenting.

I tasted the maple wine too. Turns out maple syrup really just tastes like wood once you ferment away all the sugar. All that sugar kinda makes you forget that maple syrup is just concentrated sap, but once the sweetness is gone you're like, "Damn. This tree juice sure does taste like the juice of a tree." Not sure if I like it, but I don't dislike it. It's not unpleasant or bitter or anything. Smoother than I expected.

The fresh hype and memes is good and all, but I wish Baldur's Gate 3 was an old game with its story mechanic fleshed out in online guides down to the littlest node.

Withers called me bitchless. I've rejected every romance advance I've gotten. I have not pursued anyone. The one I want is Karlach, but I'm in act 2 and she's not made a move despite being able to hug me. Have I been assigned a no romance route by role-playing a shy monk?

If this was a JRPG from 1998 Google would have an answer.

Well, the yeast they sent in that wine kit certainly seems to be working! That was also a pretty hefty dose they were calling for, which probably helped it take off hard.

The airlock had actually started bubbling within an hour or so, and this is how it's going roughly 24 hours later.

Just got back from Epcot

I'm pretty sure most of you (definitely the Muppets fans) have heard that Muppets Labs is at the Odyssey for the Food and wine festival, and I just wanted to show you the drinks I got there!

First of is the Pickle Milkshake, this one was not bad tasted really good!

Second one I had was called the frozen fusion, it end up being my favorite.

But, Y A Y, I'm just really really glad Disney added Muppets Labs to Epcot again (even though we have Muppets Mobile Labs)

Definitely recommend going to the food and wine festival!
