aghhh i’ve been thinking about the httyd books again and how Absolutely Insane they are…. i ADORE watching people react to them because there’s this one point in the series where everything just feels different. and they don’t give you time to process what on earth happened before launching you head first full speed into one of the best pieces of literature i think i’ve ever read
#i think the point in the series where something ‘changes’ is when we first meet excellinor#as soon as her presence is felt theres just something looming over the rest of the events#that feeling is more prominent when we meet furious too#for the rest of the book theres just something There. something isnt quite right bc what the fuck did we just read#and then all the books following that are DIFFERENT and book 9 (i cant remember if this is there for the other books)#has a warning at the beginning??? like. hey. shit has changed.#and btw these books do an Amazing job at describing fear#the scene with hiccup in the tree trying to escape the witch is chilling#the audiobooks only enhance it#httyd books#how to train your dragon#how to break a dragon's heart#also im making a post ab this later but this was all inspired bc i read the little short side books#and i was really startled when i finished how to train your viking - a mostly light hearted book#and then went into the day of the dreader and it casually informed us that everyone on berk was slowly starving to death WHAT???#its been so long since ive experienced that kind of whiplash from these books it had me a little :’)

Jo: „When will you get the information?“
Martina: „Soon.“

Martina: „That was it.“
Jo: „What?“
Martina: „My only chance for the scholarship.“
Narrator (audiobook):
Jo takes Martina in her arms.
Music fades in and continues into the following scene.
Martina: „Will we still be friends? Even if I have to leave?“
Jo: „'Course.“
SCENE CHANGE
Narrator (audiobook):
In the evening, Robert sits at the bar of the town pub. Justus comes in and sits down next to him.
Bökh, to the barkeeper: „Will you make me a beer?“
Barkeeper: „With pleasure.“
Justus sighs. He shoots a few looks at Robert from the side.
The barkeeper sets the beer down in front of Justus.
Bökh, to the barkeeper: „Thank you.“
Silence and music again….. But it’s comfortable this time. Not like in the wagon.
Robert looks at Justus for a moment. He turns away to take another drag from his cigarette.
Nichtraucher: „I didn’t think you’d come.“
Silence and music
Bökh: „Of course I did.“
Justus takes a drink from his beer.
Music
Robert raises his glass to his lips, still turned away from Justus.
Nichtraucher: „On the youth.“
Justus sets down his beer and looks at Robert in silence for a few seconds.
Bökh: „On us.“
This time, Robert looks at him. He studies Justus' face for a few seconds before turning away with a smile.
Narrator (audiobook):
Almost simultaneously the two turn around to a small stage with a few instruments standing on it.
Justus looks at Robert and raises his eyebrows.
Nichtraucher: „Are you ready?“
Justus shrugs and nods.
Narrator (audiobook):
A few moments later, Justus has strapped on the guitar and is standing in front of the microphone.
Robert sits at the piano and takes a last drag from his cigarette.
Narrator (Nichtraucher):
And I promise you one thing; tomorrow, I’m a nonsmoker.
Narrator (audiobook):
Justus addresses the few guests in the bar, but they are only of secondary importance tonight. Because here and now is about so much more.
Bökh: „We’re the Bandits.“
Robert chuckles.
Justus starts singing.

Different scenes are shown while the song plays. It switches back to Justus and Robert singing together inbetween.

And so everything finds a happy ending. The Internals stranded at the boarding school in the holidays spend idyllic days at the lake and in the mountains.
With their new friends, the Externs, also.
Narrator (audiobook):
And finally Herr Bökh receives the releasing letter, which he immediately delivers to Martina.
Narrator (audiobook):
She has passed the test. She will see the boarding school and her new friends again after the holidays.
Narrator (audiobook):
But for now it’s off to Berlin to Martina’s brother and mom. She has a lot to tell after all - especially about the flying classroom and how it came to be.
The song fades out with this scene. The "Bandits" finish their song. Justus grins at Robert. Robert breathes out and smiles back, nodding. The audience inside the bar cheers.
Narrator (Nichtraucher):
Most people take off their childhood like clothing that fell out of fashion and is then forgotten in a basement. Don’t let your childhood be driven out of you. Only those who grow up and stay children are human. The simple things are sometimes complicated. If you didn’t understand something, ask your parents. And - dear parents. I assigned reading homework for the weekend and was hit by this wave of irritation with the implicit lying that goes on where they act like they’ll read the homework but they never actually do and so I called them on it and started teasing them and of course they laughed but then I was like “you know my secret dream is that you go home and you walk in the door and someone wants to do something fun with you or you get a text but you hold up your hand and say ‘no no, I have to read ten pages of Beowulf’ and then you sit down and do it” and they scream-laughed at the idea but I like to think it at least presented it to their minds as a possibility
#I ended up telling 3 of my classes because I thought it was so funny and so did they#But then it was sweet because my seniors (a handful of them at least) were like ‘but we do!!’#and then it just kickstarted this real discussion where I told them honestly that my job would radically change if everyone did the reading#like. It would challenge me so much more we could go so much further#anyway I know that mostly it doesn’t work. it being my passion for it and my desire for them to read#but sometimes I’m like if it could light a couple of fires! or help some kids even think of doing the reading as a real choice they HAVE#i also tell them that it’s a skill like any other and they can get better at it.#idk. So much of my job is also just telling them why they should. why they CAN. why their lives will be better if they do#there’s a senior girl who started listening to the audiobook every night when we were reading Emma and she started taking notes#and she’s started to flourish!!! I know nothing about Alcibiades, so as an Alcibiades enthusiast how would you describe his personality 🤔

Okay so he's manipulative (in the charming/always knows the right thing to say way), very vindictive and petty, has an inflated sense of self-importance, he doesn't appear to be needlessly cruel or bloodthristy or distructive except for when he feels slighted, he's super, suuuuper ambitious, he's crazy adaptive.
He likes luxury, spending money and doing grand, impressive or excessive things. I'd say he has a lot of complex little things about him in plato's work, like, he's conflicted about what he should do with himself, or he seems to understand the value of virtue and justice and being good. But he admits that he has trouble controlling himself, or letting go of his ambitions and dealing with his shortcomings. For example, he understands that it's not a good thing that he lets himself get swayed by the need to please the crowds and thus forgets to tend to his soul. So, he also seems to crave love/attention. And when he does good stuff, it's hard to know if he's doing it out of caring for others or primarily for himself.

My boss, after reading the RFP I wrote last week: oh but I didn't think the history section explained the use case well enough [well you didn't give me any info so I was going based on what I could piece together], your appendix didn't include xyz fields [YOU DIDNT TELL ME THEY EXISTED AND I HAD NO WAY TO FIND THAT OUT SINCE y'all aren't even following BASIC RM principles when it's not convenient], what about xyz problem [ITS IN THE FUTURE STATE REQUIREMENTS. DID U NOT FUCKIN READ THEM. THEYRE IN BRIGHT RED FOR A REASON], your questions for the vendor seem too vague, we need specifics and answers in 2 weeks [specifics in what sense??? You haven't laid out a plan for this!!! It's not MY FAULT y'all decided to engage a vendor BEFORE doing an RFP or even OUTLINING THE BARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR PROPOSED SOLUTION. Like ofc it's gonna be weird and clunky YOURE DOING THE WHOLE PROCESS BACKWARDS. AND THE MFING COMMITTEE CANT GIVE ME A SINGLE ANSWER SO IM PULLING FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS OUT OF MY ASS]

I asked him for a second pair of eyes on the technical requirements (BC unlike SOME people I know my fuckin limits and I'm primarily a records manager not a database designer) and he was like oh no it looks great you nailed it and it's exactly the type of document they should be using.
So like. One of the only other ppl in the building who knows what they're talking about agrees with me. He however has the ability and a legitimate reason to recuse himself from this whole shitshow. *I* do not.

my brain is so rotten for rpf i suggested reading my fav fics aloud for my partner. and it happened yesterday i read (a chapter of) one out loud with him and he enjoyed it. converting everyone…so sick n twisted of me…

I've been worried about my vision for a while now since an eye doctor told me when I was younger that I would be legally blind one day if my eyesight didn't stop deteriorating so rapidly, and for the past few years my vision hasn't been fully clear even when I choose the best possible prescription from the slides that they show me. I had been too scared to mention it to an optometrist before bc I didn't want to admit that it was an issue, but I mentioned it this last time I went and it turns out my prescription was just slightly wrong! My right eye is actually slightly less nearsighted than we previously thought bc it also has astigmatism. So they were able to correct for the astigmatism in my lenses this time, and I just picked my glasses up today and for the FIRST time since I was probably in middle school I'm actually able to see 100% clearly with my glasses on. And my left eye had the exact same prescription as last time, so it seems like my vision loss is finally slowing down. I'm so fucking relieved I could cry
#this is a lesson to everyone to mention your concerns to your doctors lol#ive been spending the last few years worrying about my eyes deteriorating and becoming legally blind#trying to figure out how i would be able to get around without being able to drive in the us south where theres no public transport#and how i could read without being able to fully make out the words AND with auditory processing issues that would make audiobooks hard#or even just how to play video games or watch movies without subtitles bc of said auditory processing issues#and it turns out that my right eye just has something slightly different wrong with it than we previously thought#they could have caught this AGES ago and saved me a lot of stress if i had just mentioned it 😭#but im very relieved and happy now#rambling

ik im talking a lot abt the books im reading rn (this is due to the fact that after eons of not having the time or energy i am once again reading books) but theydies i can happily announce that after 2 unsuccessful weapons and wielders books soulbrand has truly captured my enamoration once again i’m kissing keras lovingly and tenderly (the only way to kiss him)
#just got to the scene where he fights edria song & she's so sweet about it and he's so unintentionally flirtatious#ugh !!!!! babygirl <3#like dgmw theres nothing wrong w the first two but like they just haven't been for me#and its like there truly is no rhyme or reason as to why because i love keras i love dawn and reika absolutely#and i especially love seeing keras as . you know. keras. instead of as taelien (but taelien is my sweet angel forever so yk)#like its not like i prefer keras to t or anything i just like seeing his growth and his changing#so idk why the first two didnt like hook me as much as any of the other books within the universe#but anyway. soulbrand has gotten me thank god ! i think i should get the paperbacks for w&w to like#reread them and just see if the medium might make a difference#eventually i wanna own all the andrew rowe books but i do also have to prioritise cause i only have the first 2 aa books#and how to defeat a demon king i found that one second hand as like a library copy im p sure ??? which is cool#so anyway i wanna complete aa first and honestly i do also very much want to own wobm very dearly#but those ones are just for the collection of it all because i dont think i'll ever reread those physically i love the audiobooks too much#and i dont have That much annotating to do in those as opposed to the arcane ascension ones#and then we get into the shatter crystal legacy (not what its called cant right recall rn) of which . i think the second one is out#but anyway ive only read the first one but would love to have that one as well obv#ugh. i love this universe so much it truly is so captivating to me#recently read

now this would go by faster if i wasn’t constantly breaking to blog and snack and other hashtag girl activities. um but well i used to be able to read a page a minute and i have roughly 60some pages left so in theory i could finish this book by 2am. if i would stop blogging. or i could bail now and just finish tomorrow after class i guess

I'm still crying 😠
#this is the kind of blow that would have made me actively suicidal a few years ago and yes i realize how stupid that is#as things are now... I'm not coping *well* but I'm managing to hold onto anger so the depression doesn't totally take over#but i can not stop crying#every time i think I'm finally done it starts up again#this has also pushed my anxiety to the point where i feel like I'm going to pass out throw up or both and i can't stop shaking#audiobooks with my noise canceling headphones were my best/only semi-effective tool for dealing with anxiety#and yes i know. reading is a privilege and i should just be grateful that books are available in my country & that we have libraries at all#this year has been one thing after another and even small things like this pile up and eventually become overwhelming#and this happening as my seasonal depression is really ramping up was just the fucking cherry on top i guess#i almost just. deleted this blog lmao. what's the point of having a book blog when i can't really read right?#but i keep telling myself nothing lasts forever and i will regret it if i throw away an 8 year old side blog#but even looking at books is making me feel even more nauseous and shaky right now#so i might be on hiatus after my queue runs out idk#depends on how long this churning pit of despair lasts i guess#and also. this happened at a holiday weekend all i can't even make a 1-2 hour drive to a library to renew or get a new card#because libraries around here close between 4 & 6PM most days and i can't get to one after my partner gets home from work before they close#everything about this situation is like. worst timing.

sorry that i think a lot of "just go to your library for books lol" shit is lowkey rude to people for whom libraries are not useful and/or accessible and for whom itd be way better to advocate for free and easy to use alternatives to procure books you can read on a screen, audiobooks, and yes even paper books, and all of that can go hand in hand w promoting libraries and their services and does not take away from their usefulness
#idk where yall have all this high tech insane library infrastructure#but where i live libraries are v inaccessible to the physically disabled#and dont offer audiobooks or online titles or whatever that people who cant read paper books easily can borrow#so..?#also not everyone is in the us i think we should consider that sometimes. just like think of it idk.#97
