OK I've been meaning to ask this for a while: why 'forest pennies' as a Túrin + Beleg tag? What do pennies have to do with them?

Okay so one time in a conversation I called Túrin a "forest puppy" because Beleg finding him in the woods and bringing him to one of the marchwarden lodges reminded me of someone finding a stray dog and bringing it home so they can decide whether they’re going to keep it or not. This led to me calling both of them forest puppies for a few months. But then one day my friend sent me a variation of that “finally I can keep these pennies to myself” meme, commenting that I’m the voiceover, Beleg and Túrin are the pennies, and the “I smell pennies” cryptid is the ship-happy people in the fandom. So “forest puppies” and “I smell pennies” got merged together into “forest pennies”. Thanks for asking about it, actually...I was wondering if anyone was confused by that tag and now I’ve had an excuse to explain it. Here are some forest pennies getting patched up after a rough day of orc-hunting.

(By the way, for those who might not know why I personally don’t subscribe to the general lax view of fandom shipping, there’s another paragraph under the cut so that those who want to read it can and those who don’t want to read it don’t have to see it.)

The reason I don’t ship non-canon ships (or even think about the canon ones very often) is that since I don’t experience sexual attraction myself. As a result, Tolkien’s platonic friendships are especially meaningful to me (one might even say they’re...precious...ba-dum-tss) and it bums me out to see that so few others appreciate the value--or even acknowledge the existence--of hecka strong platonic love. I’m only alive today because someone loved me enough, non-sexually, to keep me that way. Of course I’m not “out to get” the people who choose to ship the platonic relationships for fun or for whatever other purpose, of course I’m not. You all can do whatever you want. But I would be lying if I said it doesn’t hurt a little bit to have the highest form of love I can experience dropped by the wayside in favor of “they only care about each other because they want to bang”, especially when the version that speaks to me is the canon one which people are deliberately revising.

And now that I’ve filled my quota of vulnerability for the day, here’s another drawing to lighten the mood.

Okay, so lore/headcanon drop:

Widget and Bang first met at Storybot University and quickly became college buddies, connecting by their similar views of life and even personal struggles of feeling misunderstood and out of place. Some stuff here and there, and after a lot of bonding, the two soon became sort of a thing; Like best buds but a little something more.

Near the end of their college experience (Either they graduated or dropped out), they moved in together in an apartment as roomies. After some time, both got into the workforce in order to make money and get by. This is when Widget meets Penny while working as a intern, and when Bang joins Answer Team 341B.

Thus that leads to the present day where Widget has their girlfriend Penny, and Bang and Boop are a thing too (I love/ship those two), all while Widget and Bang still being their own thing and best friends ofc. It's like an N or Z polycule.

Wanna make a drawing one day of Penny introducing them like: "This is my partner Widget, and this is their partner Bang, and this is his partner Boop." I think that would be really fun and silly c:

Book Recommendation: Ride the River by Louis L'Amore.

One of his Sackett books, a Western series that revolves around the Sackett family, which is made up of gunslingers and cowboys, that always help a person in need. Great, fun books.

Ride the River is my favorite because it is the only Sackett book from the point of view of a female Sackett. And it's done so well.

Echo Sackett is a such an awesome character. Because she is very much a Sackett, down to her bones. She is somewhat feral teenage girl from the mountains, going to the big city for the first time, in the late 1800s. She is a respectable and proper young lady, with a dress and bonnet, a pistol in her reticle, a knife strapped to her leg and a rifle in her carpet bag.

The best thing about Echo is she doesn't advertise her skills. She is quiet about it, because prouper young ladies don't shoot, stab and pistol-whip their way through a gang of thieves, and they certainly can't outshoot any man. I love how dignified she is, and how she also takes no shit. If a man acts condescending to her, she just smiles and nods, because to her, he's not worth it. She doesn't care what some man has to say, and doesn't bother correcting misconceptions. She shoots a thief trying to steal from her, then shrugs and tells the male lead she has no idea what happened. She is such a fascinating character.

Anyway, go read Ride the River, because it's great. The audiobook is excellent too.

VTuber Ruby during the last Persona 3 stream XD

Still strange seeing a character from such a progressive series play a game with a known anti-LGBTQ+ reputation (not to mention the self-harm!). But at least they removed the transphobic scene from the remake they are playing, so that is a definite improvement! I can't expect a Japanese series to be pro-LGBTQ, but at least keep out the harmful stereotypes. Still, I don't want to throw too much shade at Persona. The games are spectacular.

Regardless, it always makes my week to see more Ruby Rose in action :D It keeps my spirits up during this stressful hiatus.

when people try to argue that feminism is unnecessary, western import for bourgeoise women, that the wage gap doesn't exist, that civilisations are built solely by men in construction doing hard labour while the women are at home, show them the impoverished female bricklayers of India, who are 49% of the second largest industry (after agriculture) of 40 million constructors, and get paid less for equal work ($7/day for men, $4/day for women) because of gender discrimination and exploited due to being poor, illiterate, debt trapped, facing gender based setbacks (not being promoted to masonry or carpentry like men) and being unaware of their union rights

this work in general is exploitative, getting paid pennies on the dollar while corporations that build their mega complexes rake in millions, hazardous to health, no safety equipment, regulations, breathing in fine dust and construction pollution for both men and women. but women in particular face gender based discrimination such as getting paid a lower raw wage and lack of opportunities to get promoted from this heavy duty scaffolding work, in fact they often do more work than the men but aren't respected by their male peers. and the idea that only men historically have done hard labour, built civilisations is a false myth that erases the plight of the millions of women in the Global South.

is an english teacher!

yes she still loves horses. she used to ride them, & she loves old western movies.

didn't immediately recognise one another. i havent got an exact idea of how they reunited after getting out, but there were tears.

bonded in a very rare and unique way - they got to revel in the newfound joys of real life again. they got to eat delicious food, go on long, unobstructed walks in the real sun, be warmed by it, chew on ice cubes and shiver at the pain, listen to each other's heartbeats, listen to real music, read real books, smell soaps and flowers and sauces. they went to the supermarket together and read all the labels, and bought one of each type of fruit to try between them, and smelled all the candles, and touched all the blankets. spent a lot of time holding hands and kissing and i'm sorry to say, probably having sex, because holy shit, i'm real, you're real, we're real

now live together in ragatha's apartment, after pomni moved out of her small and confusingly-furnished flat.

both of them feel inadequate from time to time. this is resolved by a stern-but-loving talking-to.

sandwich likes pomni very much. pomni doesn't really get cats, but loves sandwich a great deal, and enjoys letting her sleep on her lap.

ragatha is very pleased to see her girls getting along.

ragatha cooks, pomni chops the veg. she often doesn't fuck it up

pomni cleans a lot as a 'thank you for letting me live here, i love you'. she's very much acts of service, ragatha is words & physical touch <3

they watch a lot of movies together. depending on how long they've been stuck, they might have culture to catch up on

ragatha wants to have a house with a garden one day. pomni starts germinating seeds from their fruit & veg like a weird science experiment. ragatha is delighted when she is presented with a baby tomato plant.

clothes are shared. ragatha's are bigger, but most of pomni's are ill-fitting anyway so it can go both ways. ragatha likes to dress pomni up in different outfits and have her do a little fashion show. pomni pretends not to savour the confidence boost.
