A while ago, I commissioned the wonderful and talented @nae812 to draw a scene from my YOI novelisation Can You Hear My Heartbeat. The scene is part of the Tanabata* chapter, set during the summer of mutual pining, and I'm very proud to share the absolutely gorgeous result with you:
Tumblr media
Posted with permission from the artist because commission conditions and stuff. Do not repost.
They fell silent, watching the stars. But Yuuri’s heart refused to be still.
“O-hoshi-sama,” Viktor murmured, gazing at the sky. “I get it now. How can you look at the universe spinning in the sky and simply call them hoshi?”
Yuuri smiled. “Yeah. The stars are that majestic.”
“I like it. This is the most beautiful night of my life so far, Yuuri. Not even the White Nights can compare to this.”
The warm, reverent nuance in his voice made Yuuri tremble. This night, this place—it created a closeness he had never felt before with Viktor. As if a bridge had emerged from the sea of stars between them.
“Um, Viktor. There’s something you should know.”
“Huh?”
“There’s an even larger Tanabata festival held in Fukuoka.” The words welled out of Yuuri, encouraged by the darkness engulfing them and because they were not facing each other. “It’s because they have a huge Tanabata shrine there. I… I didn’t suggest it because you wanted to see the fireworks, but we wouldn’t have been able to stay that late because we’d need to catch the last train back. And I didn’t want to take the van because I wasn’t sure if I’d want to drink and I also don’t like to drive at night.” And because it would have been a date then. “My apologies.”
“No, Yuuri,” Viktor said softly. “I’m glad we stayed here. Fukuoka is likely overcrowded tonight and I don’t want to do that to Makkachin. Besides, here we have a better view of the stars because of less—how did you call it?”
“Light pollution.”
“Right.” Viktor’s voice was warm in the night as if he was smiling. “Thanks for introducing me to this festival, Yuuri.”
Yuuri thought back to the wish he had written on the red tanzaku. I wish that I’ll figure out my feelings for Viktor. I wish it to be love.
“I’m glad we came here, too.”
A reddish shine illuminated the lookout, followed by a cracking noise that ruptured the silence. “The fireworks have started!” Yuuri said. “Let’s watch!”
They hurried to a spot where the trees parted. Orange sparks rose into the sky and blossomed into colourful stars, illuminating rooftops and the people cramming on the beach and along the bridges, glittering on the bay. A sudden giddiness rose in Yuuri.
“When I was younger, I often imagined what it would be like to celebrate Tanabata with you,” he said. Each year, he had written a wish for it and hung it on a tree. “I didn’t ask you because I didn’t know how to do it without things taking a weird turn.”
“Really?” Viktor’s voice was hushed with an undercurrent of excitement.
Yuuri nodded. “The last weeks were very nice. I would have hated to ruin that.”
A hand touched Yuuri’s shoulder, stirring a swarm of butterflies in his stomach. “I enjoy our time together very much, too.”
“Yeah,” Yuuri said. His heart fluttered.
They fell silent, watching the colourful sparks blossoming above the town, mirrored on the silent river. The hand remained on his shoulder and Yuuri found he liked it being there.
“Yuuri?”
“Hum?”
“Will you tell me what you wished for?”
“No, Viktor.”
“I’ll tell you what I wished for in return.”
“It won’t come true when you say it aloud.”
“But if a wish isn’t voiced no one will know and they won’t do anything about it.”
“The gods will.”
If I were already sure of my feelings, this would have been the perfect date, Yuuri mused.
“Will you tell me your wish when it comes true?”
You will know when it comes true, Yuuri thought, struggling to tame the tempest of emotions raging within his heart. “Yes,” he said, leaning his head against Viktor’s shoulder. “I will.”
-- Chapter 17: So close and yet a universe apart
*On Tanabata or the Star Festival:
According to a legend, Princess Orihime fell in love with a cow herd named Hikoboshi, and their love was so great that both neglected their duties whereopun Orihime's father, the Emperor, banished the pair to the heavens with the Milky Way separating them. Orihime became the star Vega and Hikoboshi became the star Altair. Only once a year, in the seventh night of the seventh month, they can meet--but only if the skies are clear.
Tanabata (七夕) is celebrated in July, but in some regions, it's celebrated in August (depending on whether the Gregorian calendar or the lunar calendar is used). The stars Vega and Altair are visible in Japan from July to September. There's a couple of customs surrounding the festival, one of them is to write your wishes on paper strips and hang them on a bamboo tree. These trees are set afloat or burnt during the night. Tanabata is a very popular festival in Japan and often referred to as the most romantic night of the year. However, since in most regions, the rainy season lasts until August, the chances for clear skies are 30% on average and thus people pray for good weather several days in advance.

Looking at the trivia part on YOI wiki just for a bit of fun. Ignore me, I’m not doing well in summer, the heat is killing me.
Kenjirou was planned as Yuri's Planned Design.
Help, Minami is what Yurio was supposed to look like. Yurio was supposed to be an angry chicken nugget.
Georgi is known in Japan as the "pigeon".
DFJGLJGHJLHKL WHY??
Seung-gil has an extreme aversion (a strong dislike or disinclination) to women and vegetables while he likes meat and dogs
Dislikes women and vegetables. That’s the same category. I hate cabbage and also half of humanity. Where’s that meme. “You’re gay because you love men. I’m gay because I hate women. We’re not the same.”
Seung-gil doesn't look good in anything, but he wears sportswear when he dresses himself as he basically has no interest in fashion since he's so devoted to his sport
SDKGHJLSHFGLKFHSLDH “DOESN’T LOOK GOOD IN ANYTHING” WHY SO MEAN TO HIM. He didn’t do anything, he just wanted to skate as a rainbow parrot.
He also has many mischievous friends.
This is about Otabek. What does it meannnnn. I wish I could read the source.
According to SNS, Phichit is one of the Three Most Adorable Men's Figure Skaters in Asia.
The others are Minami and Guang Hong. I love that this is a thing.
The caption on his Instagram post during the credits reads "Reunited with bae".
This is about Chris. Captioning a post with his cat. I want to know if that’s the cat’s name or if he’s just being ridiculous. Probably just being ridiculous.
Chris is near-sighted. He uses contacts when skating.
See, Yuuri, you don’t have to skate practically blind.
Emil does extreme sports during the off season, which makes his coach nervous.
dhfghdjhghjkfg I did not know this. I love. “I swear to god if you come back with a broken leg--”
It is likely that Celestino has a low alcohol tolerance.
The way this is phrased compared to the image of him passed out on the table with Phichit taking pictures
Toshiya does not know much about figure skating as he is more of a soccer fan.
That’s not an excuse, Toshiya, your son started doing it when he was a child.
On the official site, she is described as "the woman of Yuuri's dreams"
About Yuuko. I’m. What fgjhghjlfhkjg Even with my interpretation of Yuuri being bi, this is a lot.
According to Mitsurou Kubo, while the staff did their best to portray the appeal of the skaters, they didn't try very hard with Takeshi.
GSLJHSLKDGKHJLDH SO MEAN
Mila is seen during the Sochi GPF banquet taking pictures of Yuuri Katsuki pole dancing.
And I want to see her pictures too. We got pictures by others, give me hers too.
Sara's Instagram is sala-crispino
And I find this now, years after we had the naming discourse.
Michele is ironically described as a virgin.
The “Ironically” is the part that kills me here.
A portion of Michele's free program is skated by Yuuri Katsuki in the opening credits
Does he deserve the honor? And he was so rude to Yuuri too ( ᓂ︿⁾⁾⁾)
Actually this made me think about Viktor deciding to get back at Mickey for disrespecting Yuuri, and encouraging Yuuri to skate his program just because he’ll do it better. I think Viktor is that kind of petty.
Some part of one of Michele's skate program "Serenade for Two" have been a part of Yuri Plisetsky's skate for the opening of anime.
Definitely Viktor’s idea. And Yuri was in on it.

On the tracks of Yuri On Ice in Barcelona - Day 2 Part 1
Let's be honest. The most iconic place in Barcelona is not the Sagrada Familia. It's not Casa Batllò, nor Casa Mila or Arc de Triumph.
We should know, we took a city tour yesterday and we saw all of them. All the touristy stuff, the weird streets, the fancy avenues... None of them are it.
The most iconic place in Barcelona is the Cathedral of Barcelona. You know, this place :
Tumblr media
I can't tell you the sheer excitement when spotting those metal gates all the way from the other side of an ocean of tourists and street artists.
We ran in front of it and were met by a big group of tourist and 2 very Stern looking people guarding the entrance to the church. We didn't care, we were not here for the inside of it anyway...
From then on, @tony-dreams suffered a long search for the perfect angle, while the guards were looking at us funny (sucks to be non-YOI fan them because we were having lots of fun and they looked very bored with life).
But Tony's pain was so worth it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our little Viktor and Yuuri were extremely excited and decided to exchange rings again!
Tumblr media
And then, before we knew what was happening, an accident occurred!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We exchanged engagement fidgeting rings in front of the cathedral????!!!
We had to take a minute to clear our heads again before heading to Las Arenas...
"But what is Las Arenas?" will you ask. Well, let's meet in the next post and find out!

"Slut."
Viktor tried to fight off the smile emerging on his face when he heard his friend's good hearted teasing. Making sure his amusement doesn't show on his face, he turned his head towards the source of the voice and replied the accusation with his best unfazed expression, "I'm not understanding what you mean."
"Oh you know damn well what I mean," Chris was looking at him with an eyebrow arched so high, he was always the best at it, "What happened to 'Graphic shirts are only for those who have no idea how to play with textures and colors.' then?" Well.
"Well," he started, "I changed my mind."
"Oh please."
Chris was staying at their place for his annual visit, supposedly including Phichit but he couldn't make it because of some family business that's too complicated for Viktor to remember, and three of them planned to have a dine out and drinking night. Yuuri left them early in the morning for his ballet class from Lilia, then Chris announced he's going to wander around the city and shop a bit so it was Viktor's job for today to visit the vet and buy Makka's special dog food and vitamins.
Until 5 minutes ago, Viktor was waiting both of them in front of their apartment where he came to park their car because he absolutely wasn't going to be the responsible one and not drink tonight.
"Yuuri should be here any time soon, he was changing the last time I texted him." This little piece of information wasn't going to please Chris' curious interrogation in any way but Viktor didn't want to give in that easily. It was his job as Chris' best friend to annoy him more.
"Uh huh, so it's any time soon he will see you in this graphic shirt. Though I have to admit, this is kind of too innocent to be a special liking."
"It's not that-"
He stopped talking immediately as he heard the apartment's door opening and there was a very husband shaped figure coming towards them with a worried smile. "Did I make you two wait?"
"Yuuri!" He turned to his husband with a huge smile he never tries to fight off. The weak man he is, Viktor practically threw himself into Yuuri's expecting embrace and kissed him.
"No darling, we were talking about Viktor's unusual clothing choices." Chris' easy reply caught Yuuri's attention and he stepped back to check his husband's outfit and what's so unusual about it.
"What about his clothes- Oh."
As Yuuri started to blush so beautifully, his eyes opened more and more to take in what's in front of him. His eyes were taking Viktor in part by part and in that gaze, Viktor felt he became a whole again. "He looks nice in it."
Well, fuck. Viktor was beyond saving.
It seemed that Yuuri remembered their friend's existence as he couldn't keep his gaze on his husband anymore so he smiled awkwardly and told them that he's going to put his bag in the car for tomorrow so they could leave.
While Yuuri was going to their car after taking the keys from Viktor, his friend looked at him with the biggest shit eating grin on his face. "What were you saying, darling?"
"I was saying that it's not a graphic shirt. It's his graphic shirt."
The grin on Chris' face was somehow growing bigger and bigger as the blush he usually doesn't have, not when he's not with Yuuri, was burning his cheeks and ears. Not to confuse it with embarrassment, it was never embarrasment. He was just so, so in love.

I suppose I could share a bit of the next chapter...
Sometimes I stare at chapters for ages and can never make that one scene work, but other times I open the file and know exactly what was missing. Like magic.
And other times I was trying to add in something that wasn't really needed and could just be scrapped. The next chapter was a little of everything.
I know everyone wants to see what Viktor is up to, but there is still a whole day of competition at 4CC left and a banquet... Do you really want to miss all that?
“When are they supposed to arrive?” Takeshi shifted from foot to foot. He didn’t know what he should do with his hands. Should he just put one in his pocket like Yuuri was? No. He’d look foolish if he did that. He didn’t have that look of affected boredom that models like Yuuri could sport at the drop of a hat which made the whole 'hand in pocket, casually standing around' thing work.
He crossed his arms instead, but then felt like he probably looked like a hockey player out of place in a fancy suit, so dropped his arms to his side and looked at Yuuri again who was looking at his phone and not paying any attention to Takeshi’s dilemma. “They should be here already, right?”
Yuuri looked over at him, frowning as Takeshi shoved his hand into his pocket and then pulled it out again. “They just got here and are heading to the elevator.” Yuuri paused. “What are you doing?”
Takeshi huffed. “I don’t know what to do with my hands.” He held one out to Yuuri. “See this hand? It usually has Yuuko’s hand in it at these things, but she’s not here because your friends stole her!”
Laughing, Yuuri nodded. “That is correct. She’s been kidnapped, held against her will as my friends offer their designer cast-offs to her and Keiko.” He bit down on his lip. “Let Yuuko have this, Takeshi. Let her go and enjoy getting ready for a fancy party with a bunch of other women around her age. She’s getting her hair and makeup done by professionals, they’re going to dress her up in expensive clothing, and let her wear shoes that I’m sure that I don’t want to know the cost of. It might all seem overkill to you, but for LOVE-ly this is just another function where they’re expected to present themselves at a certain level. So yes, Yuuko could have just worn the same dress that she wore to the last banquet she attended and get ready in the room with you, doing her hair up the same way she’s done a million times, but why not let her be spoiled? Why begrudge her this?”
Nishigori shoved his hands in his pockets and stared at the elevator doors. He didn’t begrudge his wife anything, especially not this. He just worried that she’d think he was too boring or something after living the high life.
From the corner of his eye, Nishigori saw Yuuri nod and then look back at his phone, pulling his hand out of his pocket and typing something on it with his thumbs. The elevator door opened and a bunch of skaters, none of them his wife, poured out. The gold medalists in ice dance, the Americans Matt and Caro, paused and stared at Yuuri.
“It’s a new suit,” Matt whispered.
His partner smiled at them. “It is!” Caro dropped her hand from the crook of Matt’s arm and took a step forward until she was standing in front of Yuuri, forcing Yuuri to look up from his phone. “Hi, Yuuri.”
“Hi, Carolyn…san. Can I help you with something?” He blinked at her.
She hummed. “Just Caro. I swear we already had this conversation. Call me Caro.” She smiled. “Nice suit, is it new?”
Yuuri nodded. “Yes, well, sort of. I got it after nationals for a New Years thing.”
“We should take a picture!” she stepped into the space next to him, and looped her arm through his, turning to look at Matt. Yuuri's eyes went wide and panicked. So maybe there was something of the awkward kid left in his friend. “Say cheese!”
“No! No pictures on Scythecapades!” Yuuri groused as Paul walked between the pair and where Matt was standing with his phone camera pointed at them.
Matt laughed. “Not even this one?” He walked over to Yuuri and showed him the photo.
Yuuri blinked, staring down at the picture, the corner of his lips eventually twitching up. “All right. You can share that one, if you absolutely have to.”
“Share what?” Yuuko’s voice came from next to Takeshi and he whipped around to look at his wife.
He opened his mouth to say something, but forgot what words were.
“You look lovely, Nishigori-san!” Matt stepped forward and quickly lifted Yuuko’s hand to press a kiss to the air just above it.
“Arigatou, Smith-san,” Yuuko beamed.
Her chestnut hair had been curled into loose waves, and some of her bangs brushed to the side, held in place with a flower clip that matched the multitude of flowers that covered the dress she was wearing. The neckline of the dress was no different than most of the higher necklines that Yuuko preferred, but the entire top was made of a sheer mesh that disappeared under the flowers that made up the rest of the dress, but not before showing just a little cleavage. The flowers were mostly bright pinks and corals with sparse accents of spring greens and ice blues, made all the brighter against the black fabric. The dress itself came in tight at her waist and then poofed out in layers of fine black tulle covered in even more flowers, some just visible in the topmost underlayers too. Takeshi thought his wife had rarely looked more beautiful, and the times he did, she was unlikely to agree with him, their wedding being the sole exception.
Yuuri brushed past him and smiled down at Yuuko. “ゆうちゃん、きれい!そのドレス似合ってる。(Yu-chan is beautiful! That dress looks good on you.)”
His wife giggled. Giggled! “Yuu-kun, arigatou.” And then she turned expectant eyes on Takeshi and he didn’t know what to do. Yuuri had literally stolen his line. The one that Yuuko had taught them both when they were still kids and had told Mari that she looked weird when she’d gotten all done up that one time.
Kanon came up next to her and leaned in to whisper something into Yuuko’s ear that made Yuuko blush. What did she say?
“Kanon-chan!” Yuuko turned to look at her with eyes wide. “I couldn’t! I promise to be careful.”
“Are you already causing trouble?” Yuuri asked the idol.
“I just told her that I was always going to let her keep the dress, but that if her husband ruined it, I definitely didn’t want it back!” She winked at Takeshi. “Go on, tell her how cute she looks.”
“Kawaii.” It sounded like a frog had taken up residence in his throat, and Takeshi started coughing.

YOI Snz Fic #4:
Hi did you know that I'm a disaster for this series? Because I am 150% and Fetish!Yuuri will never not be my favorite thing ok? He deserves to snz and love it.
Yuuri’s experience with Viktor’s head cold. Sequel to A Simple Kindness and Just a Little… a bit more NSFW under the cut – you know, as a treat.
It takes all of a day and a half for Phichit/Viktor’s head cold to make its way to Yuuri. He finds himself sitting in class two days after Phichit’s return with his nose running a noticeable amount. By the time he’s back in their room, at about three in the afternoon no less, Phichit is up and grimacing at him.
“Oh no.” Phichit winces at him.
“What?” Yuuri asks depositing his backpack onto his bed.
“Seems like you caught my cold… that was fast.” Phichit sniffs harshly at the end of his statement.
“I-… I don’t… Do I look bad?” Yuuri manages to ask, stuttering all the while.
“No, no! I just feel kind of guilty that I got you sick.” Phichit chuckles.
“Don’t feel bad, seemed pretty inevitable.” Yuuri quickly presses the back of his hand to the underside of his nose, feeling the dribbly beginnings of a leak.
“Here, good thing you got so many tissues.” Phichit gives a weak laugh as he offers the box. His face is still pale and dusted with irritated pinks, but he smiles at his roommate all the same.
“Thanks.” Yuuri accepts the tissue and turns away to clean himself up.
“How are you feeling?”
Yuuri tries not to let it show how uncomfortable that question makes him. “I’m fine… really. I mean, I don’t really feel sick yet just a little… off. I’m still going to practice.”
“And have Ciao Ciao mad at the both of us? Seems like a bad idea. But I w-won’t… huh… huuhh~… He’tchew!” Phichit lets out a post sneeze groan that leave’s Yuuri’s skin tingly.
“Bless you.” Yuuri sniffles as quietly as he can.
“Thank you.” Phichit smiles through the teary aftermath of the sneeze.
“I’ll pick up food on my way back from practice. Text me what you want, okay?”
“Sure thing. You’re the best, Yuuri!” Phichit waves him off, although Yuuri can hear the gurgling blow left in his wake.
It is probably not the best choice, to go to practice that day, but Yuuri has already committed. That, and the idea of succumbing to his illness already leaves him a bit… weak in the knees. He’s tired and a bit achy, but overall still functional. The Grand Prix Final is in two weeks and he has to be on the top of his game anyhow.
He gets through warmups no problem but he’s not on the ice for twenty minutes before his nose goes from drippy to open faucet. Yuuri barely makes it to the edge of the rink in time to grab a tissue before he’s pitching forward into a sneeze. He can’t even restrain himself or stifle like he usually will in public, which leaves him both breathless and embarrassed.
“Not feeling well?” Yuuri jumps at the sound of Ciao Ciao’s concerned question.
“I’m fine, coach, promise.” Yuuri squeaks out, fighting the urge to sneeze again.
“Come here.” Ciao Ciao beckons him off the ice. Reluctantly, Yuuri steps off the ice towards the bleachers. The coach puts a hand on Yuuri’s forehead and a part of him dies a little on the inside. “You have a temperature.”
Yuuri really is shocked at that, “Oh… I don’t feel that bad…”
“Well, let’s not tempt fate, get back to your dorm for the evening. I want you resting for the remainder of the week, we can probably assume you have what Phichit has. The medication I got him should work for you too, if you need more let me know.”
“Uh… yeah, sure, okay… yeah.” Yuuri stammers. He is quick to turn towards the locker room and sink onto a bench so that he can be alone for a few minutes. God… GOD.
He really doesn’t feel that bad yet, perhaps a bit achy and his running nose seems to have abated somewhat since retreating from the fridged rink. He takes the opportunity of quiet to anxiously check through his schedule, he had the good sense to catch this near the end of the week at least so maybe he’ll be well enough to attend class on Monday?
Once he has sufficiently distracted himself, he rises from the bench and finds his legs wobbling beneath him. Taking a moment, Yuuri braces himself against his still open locker. Phichit hadn’t been lightheaded right? Is this just a fun new twist the virus has decided to take? And why the fuck does it have to happen now?
The wash of dizziness passes and he straightens his back. He pulls out his phone to text his roommate.
Ciao Ciao sent me home, let me know what you want for dinner.
Hardly a minute later Yuuri receives a text:
Oh no! Poor thing 😢😩☹️
Don’t worry about dinner
You need to get back to the dorm to rest!
Yuuri tries not to crawl out of his skin sack because holy shit Phichit doting on him might be turning him on.
It’s fine, I’m already out. I still don’t feel terrible yet and we need to eat. Do we need more tissues? If we’re both gonna be down for the count I’d rather be prepared 🙂
Yuuri hopes that sounds casual and caring, not… whatever the fuck he’s actually thinking and feeling. Phichit relents on the condition that Yuuri come straight back to the dorm after picking up food. Yuuri starts to feel run down somewhere between getting the food and hoping on the campus shuttle. His eyes are tired and he keeps sniffing every few seconds.
The aches have settled and his throat feels tickly in the back of it, the feeling claws its way up to Yuuri’s sinuses and before he knows it he’s on the verge of a sneeze. God he doesn’t want to sneeze on the shuttle. God he doesn’t want to sneeze all over his and Phichit’s dinner regardless of the packaging around it.
He tries holding his breath in his lungs, but that does nothing for the itchy needy tickle in his nose. He rubs at it with the back of his hand, still unsanitary but better than nothing. He starts hitching and all he can do is firmly press his wrist beneath his nose.
The action does fuck all to stop the sneeze but it does help him stifle as he mashes his nose into his hand.
“H’xxm-Eh’mmptf!” His nose is not satisfied with the restrain he shows, the wetness that has yet to be expelled sits lower in his nostrils. The cold puts up one hell of a fight and his sinuses are threatening to explode again but Yuuri’s willpower does manage to win out.
When he finally unloads himself from the shuttle his body is shaking. It’s dark out, at least, so no one can see the shimmering mess that has leaked onto his upper lip. He’d tried in vein to wipe the mess away but it had only smeared when in contact with his damp sleeve.
Once he finally reaches their dorm Yuuri takes a deep breath and tries to ignore the congested sound he makes before pushing the door open.
“I’m back.” Yuuri announces, refusing to make eye contact with Phichit.
“How’re you feeling?” Phichit asks, putting up his headphones.
“I’m- uh… I’ve been better, but I’ve definitely been worse.” Yuuri shrugs as he starts unpacking their dinner.
“How was practice?”
“Fine, honestly. I think Ciao Ciao is overreacting.” Yuuri forces a chuckle.
“Let’s hope so.” Phichit makes a sound that blurs the line between a snort and a sniff that Yuuri is absolutely not focusing on thank you kindly. “You’re sure you’re feeling alright?”
“Yup. Totally fine…” Yuuri chuckles awkwardly.
“Hate to break it to you bud, but you have snot on your face.”
Mortified doesn’t even begin to cover the emotion that fills Yuuri as he quickly grabs a napkin to clean himself up. He stutters out an apology that Phichit waves off.
“We’ve all been there, I mean you saw me when I got home right? I was a certified disaster.”
Yuuri is, in fact, doing absolutely everything in his power to pretend that never happened, thank you kindly. He’s aching all over, chills running up and down the length of his spine, and the burn of embarrassment is not helping the fact that is definitely coming down with a fever… shit.
“You hungry?” Yuuri asks lamely.
Phichit, catching the hint that Yuuri is uncomfortable takes his food and sits on the end of his bed – regaling Yuuri with the tales of his Instagram feed as if nothing has happened.
It seems the grace period this cold had given him to get home from practice has worn off. He feels like he’s been hit by a ton of bricks all woozy and fevered. It sucks, he feels awful, and he doesn’t want to bring it up because he would literally rather die.
He doesn’t even notice the prolonged quiet until Phichit nudges him with his foot.
“You want to get into bed? You look like you need the rest.”
Yuuri, suddenly very aware of the fact that he is in an uncomfortable predicament to say the least, shakes his head.
“I think I’m going to shower first… Then yeah, I’ll turn in early…” Yuuri rubs the back of his neck.
“Okay, you should feel free to take some medicine too. Try not to be stubborn about it like I was.” Phichit’s chuckle turns into a chesty cough and Yuuri nods slowly, taking a languid bite of food before he realizes that he isn’t hungry at all.
He puts his leftovers in the mini fridge and takes his shower caddy down to the washroom. It’s embarrassing and stupid and he hates it but there’s a stirring deep in his core that hasn’t let up since he realized that he’s coming down with this damn cold.
It’s Viktor’s cold for fucks sake, and he’s just expected to… what? Keep going about his day? Like it’s a regular ass Tuesday and not the day that he caught Viktor Nikiforov’s cold? Via a third party, but STILL.
He is blessedly alone in the showers, it’s an odd enough hour that he isn’t even thinking about being interrupted (that and maybe the fever is getting to him alright?). He starts the water, as warm as he can get it and then he pulls out the smallest travel sized eucalyptus and balsam shower gel. The thought is both dreadfully embarrassing and outrageously sinful – he’s never met a product that makes him sneeze quite as much as this one.
He squirts a bit of the soap onto his wash cloth and instantly his nostrils tickle, an all too familiar sensation. His eyes water as he lathers the product, it doesn’t even touch his skin before he’s lurching forward with a congested, “Eghxx’yuggh!”
Mildly frustrated by the half hearted first sneeze, he lathers himself with the product hoping for something more productive. Instead of sneezing, he leaks, his eyes streaming with tears and his nose running with thin clear snot. His face itches with need but his nose refuses to cooperate.
He allows his free hand to clutch the pale skin of his thigh a groan falling out of his lips as he fruitlessly hitches. There isn’t a sneeze there, but his brain or his lungs don’t know that. His dick doesn’t seem to mind it all though…
He leaves the washcloth un washed as he rinses his body, the warm water running off his body melting the muscles beneath the pattering weak water pressure.  His breath jitters again in his chest but nothing comes of it. He wonders if Viktor was like this, hitchy and helpless, unable to connect his desire to sneeze with his body’s rejection of the act.
Suddenly he gasps before a sneeze tumbles out of him, “He’hggCHHugh!”
It feels so good to let go that he moans without a second thought, but he wants more – preferably he’d like to get all the sneezing he needs to out of his system so he doesn’t have to stifle all night in front of Phichit. A fate he likely won’t be spared considering how horrifically sneezy Phichit has been the past few days.
“AHG’chu-ATCHhuuh!” The congested half releases are starting to get on his nerves. It’s one thing when he chooses to stifle, but now isn’t the time for that. He wants to sneeze, needs to in fact, so his body should just do the damn thing already.
He washes his hair as a few more choppy strained sneezes force their way out of his nose. He’s so frustrated that just as he’s running out of tasks to accomplish he returns to the washcloth and buries his nose into the fabric. He’s deeply inhaling the scent of it before he can stop himself. The sharp woodsy smell makes his eyes water but he doesn’t bull away from the sopping cloth until his nose is well and truly tortured by it.
He pulls away from the cloth breathing in once, twice, and then he stalls. His nose scrunches as the rest of his body prepares for the release.
Yuuri whimpers slightly as the feeling in his nose swells once more, “Puh-… Please…”
Just as he’s starting to raise the washcloth to his face for another sniff, that truly satisfying sneeze finally bursts out of him, “Ah—HAkkAtchuuhh! Ekkghchoo! Eptt’ghCHUUH!”
He opens his eyes long enough to see the sickly splatter coating the wall beside him. It makes his head spin and the already warm parts of his stomach flip as he launches into a fit of deep satisfying sneezes. His head bobbing dramatically, his desperate gasping unrestrained. He can’t remember the last time he indulged himself this much. He isn’t sure he’s ever indulged himself this much.
He’s crying and sneezing so much he has a fleeting thought about how he’ll probably need to scrub his face again after this. But he doesn’t care because it feels so relieving, the pressure in his head alleviates and the tight coil of arousal within him is more than taken care of.
The fit ends when he finally allows himself to blow his nose, he almost doesn’t want to but the water is starting to get cold and he’s not about to take a cold shower when he’s feeling poorly. He stops the flow of water packs his things away and sets up at one of the counters. He feels more sneezes in the recesses of his sinuses but it’s not urgent anymore… at least not now.
He blow dries his hair and finishes his shower routine in peace. At one point, he shamelessly sneezes uncovered towards the floor while the blow dryer is still running. No one needs to know about that…
Yuuri spares a look at himself in the mirror before he goes, now that the steam of the shower is gone he can see his eyes look irritated and his cheeks are flushed with fever. Phichit is bound to comment, but at least Yuuri has himself under control… for now… But he’ll take that over the alternative – which is being both pent up and sick…
He heads upstairs, desperate for his bed and hoping that Phichit is well enough in the coming days to give him a little more privacy.

Scoring in Yuri on Ice
or the IJS Scoring System prior to 2018
Tumblr media
I made a guide like this before but I wanted to rewrite it since I found some flaws and want to add more resources and stuff for both YoI fanfic authors and fans who just want to understand scoring in figure skating a little better maybe :)
Disclaimer: I am only human. This guide is most likely flawed. But the ISU doesn't seem to understand their own scoring most of the time either so does it really matter? Please tell me if I have wrong information on anything or explained it wrong/confusingly. ^^
The International Judging System (IJS) has been used in figure skating and ice dance competitions since 2004. It replaced the prior 6.0 system which awarded two marks on a scale to 0 to 6, one for technical merit and one for presentation.
Some of the "older" skaters in YoI, e.g. Viktor, Chris and Yuuri, still skated under the 6.0 at some point. If you place the start of the story in 2015/16, then Viktor skated under the 6.0 for his whole Junior career and the switch was made around when he started skating in seniors.
But we are not here to talk about the 6.0.
Scores given within the IJS consist of 2 parts: The Technical Element Score (TES) and Program Component Score (PCS), which are then combined to make up the Total Segment Score (TSS).
A score sheet from a competition (in this case short program) looks like this:
Tumblr media
So let's break that down, shall we?
Technical Element Score (TES)
The TES is about the technical elements in a program, such as jumps, spins, step and choreographic sequences.
In the Short Program there are 7 required elements which can be skated in whatever order:
A double or triple Axel
one triple or quad jump
a jump combination
one spin with a flying entry
a camel or sit spin with just one change of foot
a spin combination with just one change of foot
a step sequence
Single jumps don't recieve any points at all, but do count as a performed element. That means if a skater "pops" a jump, meaning they open up to early and only perform a single rotation, they can't just try again.
The short program is 2min 40 secs long +/- 10 secs
The Free Skate is more...well...free. But there are also restrictions.
A total of 12 elements have to be performed:
7 jump elements. One has to be an Axel jump.
Three spins. One has to be a combination, one has to be a single position and one has to have a flying entrance
One step sequence
One choreographic sequence
Different to the short program, you get points for single jumps. Though those are hardly ever performed on purpose.
The Free Skate is 4 minutes and 20 secs long +/- (now it's 4 min).
Every Element has a Base Value (BV). That meas the performed element is guaranteed those points minus deductions and plus the Grade of Execution (GOE).
Base Values
In Figure Skating there are 6 jumps which can be performed with up to 4 roations at the time being. I will list them with the according base values and with the according abbreviations.
Toe Loop:
1T =0.4pt - 2T =1.3pt- 3T = 4.3pt - 4T = 10.3pt
Salchow:
1S = 0.4pt - 2S = 1.3pt - 3S = 4.4pt - 4S = 10.5pt
Loop:
1Lo = 0.5pt - 2Lo = 1.8pt - 3Lo = 5.1pt - 4Lo = 12pt
Flip:
1F = 0.5pt - 2F = 1.9pt - 3F =5.3pt - 4F= 12.3pt
Lutz:
1Lz = 0.6pt - 2Lz = 2.1pt - 3Lz = 6pt - 4Lz =13.6pt
Axel:
1A =1.1pt - 2A= 3.3pt - 3A = 8.5pt - 4A = 15pt
Those values are for prior to 2018 and correct in the context of YoI, the Base Value of the quads and 3A are now a little lower.
-> Why is the Axel worth so much more?
Unlike the other jumps, a single Axel has 1 1/2 rotations, since, other than the all other jumps, it has a forward take off, but is landed backwards.
As of now, the quad Axel has only been landed succesfully by Ilia Malinin, a 18 y/o skater from the USA. He landed it for the first time in competition and got it ratified at the beginning of the 22/23 season at the US Classic, a challenger event that was freaking geoblocked so no one outside the US fucking saw history being made...
Prior to that, Yuzuru Hanyu trained the 4A intensely, and landed it in competition on two feet at the Japanese National Championships in 2021, but failed to get it ratified internationally at the 2022 Olympics because he fell.
But, as far as YoI canon goes, not even Viktor jumps a quad Axel. The extra half rotation makes that jump extremly difficult and was deemed impossible for a very long time. And while I encourage you to use the quad Axel as a story point and a goal for one of the characters, and think it can be very powerful, I highly discourage you from putting a quad Axel in your story lightly.
Euler Jump (a transitional half jump used in combinations to change the edge for take off): 1 EU 0.5 points
-> in YoI that would still be called a single Loop (because thats what it is basically...) and be marked as 1Lo! They changed the name in 2018.
I will try to make another post about the different jumps soon, but for now here is a guide for telling apart jumps!
youtube
Combination jumps:
For jump combinations the base values are simply combined. E.g.: A 3F+1Lo+3S combination has a base value of 10.1 points.
Reduction of Base Value:
An underrotated jump (<) will receive 70% of the Base Value, a downgraded jump (<<) receives the Base Value of the jump with one less rotation. If I am not mistaken the 70% Base Value rule also applies to jumps with a wrong take off edge (marked with "e"). Someone please corect me if I'm wrong, I couldn't find the information anywhere...
Repetition:
In the Short Program, each jump can only be executed once. That means that if a skater jumps for example a triple toe loop as a solo jump and as part of the combination, the second jump won't receive any points.
Further in the Free Skate, the "Zayak rule" is to be observed, meaning that from all triple and quad jumps, only two can be executed twice. The repeated jump has to be in combination! For example having a 4T and 4T+2T in your program is valid. But if you have two solo 4T the second one gets marked +REP and receives 70% of the base value.
This also means that if a skater falls on that combination with the repeated jump, it's extra bad. Because that means -1pt for the fall, negative GOE of course and the jump is only worth 70%...tough.
If a skater repeats a jump, it will often be refered to as "zayaked".
Jumps of the same type but with different amounts of rotation are not considered the same jump.
Extra jump elements exceding the 3 in the Short and 7 in the Free don't receive any points.
Spins:
For Spins there are 4 basic positions: Upright, Layback, Sit and Camel. A Combination Spin must include an upright, a sit and a Camel position.
You can get awarded up to a Level 4 for a Spin, depending on various features such as a difficult entry, difficult change of position, visible increase of speed....
I will explain Spins and Spin Levels further in another post but here is a (very long...) list of values for different spins:
Upright Spin (USp):
USpB 1pt - USp1 1.2pt - USp2 1.5pt - Usp3 1.9pt - USp4 2.4
Flying Upright Spin (FUSp):
FUSpB 1.5pt - FUSp1 1.7pt - FUSp2 2pt - FUSp3 2.4pt - FUSp 4 2.9pt
Upright Spin with change of foot (CUSp):
CUSpB 1.5pt - CUSp1 1.7pt - CUSp2 2pt - CUSp3 2.4pt - CUSp4 2.9pt
Layback Spin (LSp):
LSpB 1.2pt - LSp1 1.5 - LSp2 - 1.9 - LSp3 2.4 - LSp4 2.7pt
Flying Layback Sping (FLSp):
FLSpB 1.7pt - FLSp1 2pt - FLSp2 2.4pt - FLSp3 2.9pt - FLSp4 3.2 pt
Layback Spin with change of foot (CLSp):
CLSpB 1.7pt - CLSp1 2pt - CLSp2 2.4pt - CLSp3 2.9pt - CLSp4 3.2pt
Camel Spin (CSp):
CSpB 1.1pt - CSp1 1.4pt - CSp2 1.8pt - CSp3 2.3pt - CSp4 2.6pt
Flying Camel Spin (FCSp):
FCSpB 1.6pt - FCSP1 1.9pt - FCSp2 2.3pt - FCSp3 2.8pt - FCSp4 3.2pt
Camel Spin with a change of foot (CCSp):
CCSpB 1.7pt - CCSp1 2pt - CCSp2 2.3pt - CCSp3 2.6pt - CCSp4 3.2pt
Sit Spint (SSp):
SSpB 1.1pt - SSp1 1.3pt - SSp2 1.6pt - SSp3 2.1pt - SSp4 2.5pt
Flying Sit Spin (FSSp):
FSSpB 1.7pt - FSSp1 2.0pt - FSSp2 2.3pt - FSSp3 2.6pt - FSSp4 3pt
Sit Spin with a change of foot (CSSp):
CSSpB 1.6pt - CSSp1 1.9pt - CSSp2 2.3pt - CSSp3 2.6pt - CSSp4 3pt
Spin Combination (CoSp):
CoSpB 1.5pt - CoSp1 1.7pt - CoSp2 2pt - CoSp3 2.5pt - CoSp4 3pt
Spin Combination with a change of foot (CCoSP):
CCoSpB 1.7pt - CCoSp1 2pt - CCoSp2 2.5pt - CCoSp3 3pt - CCoSp4 3.5pt
If you want to see good spins in men's skating, I highly recomend taking a look at Roman Spindovsky...ehm I mean Sadovsky ;D Here an example of a level 4 change of foot combination spin from him:
youtube
Step Sequence
A step sequence should have little two footed skating, a variety of different difficult turns and steps and cover the whole ice surface. Just as for spins, levels from base to 4 are awared depending on several factors that I will try to explain in a future post.
But for you to get an idea of what a masterful Level 4 step sequence looks like, here is the step sequence from Yuzuru Hanyu's Rondo:
As for Base Value:
Basic Level: 1.5 points
Level 1: 1.8 points
Level 2: 2.6 points
Level 3: 3.3 points
Level 4: 3.9 points
Choreographic Sequence:
The Choreographic Sequence is only performed in the Free Skate, and includes choreographic elements such as spirals, lunges... I will also make a post introducing different choreo elements in (hopefully) the near future, but for now have this Choreo Sequence from Deniss Vasiljevs as an example!
Watch the video from 1:25min to roughly 2:00min (or watch the whole thing I highly recomend :D). Using this as an example out of spite because the judges are stupid and inavlidated it for some reason...idiots...
youtube
As for Base Value, there are no different levels for choreographic Sequences so, very short "list":
ChSq 2pt
Grade of Execution (GOE):
The GOE ranged from -3 to +3 prior to 2018. The panel of judges awards GOE depending on how well executed an element is.
But how is GOE awarded?
Both positive and negative aspects of a performed element are considered and then added in the end for the final GOE.
Jumps:
To receive +1 GOE, 2 of the following bullets must be achieved, for +2, 4 bullets and for +3 6 or more.
unexpected/creative/difficult entry (An example for that would be a back counter into an axel jump)
clear recognizable steps/free skating movements immediately preceding the element (My favorite example in Yuzuru's Twizzle exit from a 3A)
varied position in the air/delay in rotation (Remember when Yuri Plisetsky raised his arms during his jumps in the Grand Prix Final? That's what they mean with varied position in the air. Delay in rotation is pretty self explainatory I think. The skater needs longer to rotate, making it more difficult)
good height and distance
good extension on landing/ creative exit
good flow
effortless throughout
element matched to the musical structure (I just love when a skater lands a jump right when the music pics up mmmh chefs kiss)
Negative GOE is given for the following errors (It's too much to write down so here is a screenshot from the ISU Guidelines):
Tumblr media
Spins:
To receive +1 GOE, 2 of the following bullets must be achieved, for +2, 4 bullets and for +3 6 or more.
good speed or acceleration during spin
ability to center a spin quickly
balanced rotations in all positions
clearly more than required number of revolutions (which is 3 is think)
good, strong position(s) (including height and air/landing position in flying spins)
creativity and originality
good control throughout all phases
element matched to the musical structure
Negative GOE is given for the following errors:
Tumblr media
Traveling refers to a skater moving across the ice during a spin instead of staying in roughly the same space.
Step Sequence:
To receive +1 GOE, 2 of the following bullets must be achieved, for +2, 4 bullets and for +3 6 or more.
good energy and execution
good speed or acceleration during sequence
use of various steps during the sequence
deep clean edges (including entry and exit of all turns)
good control and commitment of the whole body maintaining accuracy of steps
creativity and originality
effortless throughout
element enhances the musical structure
Negative GOE is given for the following errors:
Tumblr media
Choreographic Sequence:
To receive +1 GOE, 2 of the following bullets must be achieved, for +2, 4 bullets and for +3 6 or more.
good flow, energy and execution
good speed or acceleration during sequence
good clarity and precision
good control and commitment of whole body
creativity and originality
effortless throughout
reflecting concept/character of the program
element enhances the musical structure
Negative GOE is given for the following errors:
Tumblr media
Calculating GOE:
The Panel of judges usually consists of 9 judges. The lowest and highest GOE mark are cut, then the average of the remaining 7 is used to determine the GOE points for that jump.
For example:
A skater executed a Triple Lutz with a base value of 6 points. The GEO marks from the judges were as followed: +2, +2, +3, +2, +1, +1, +2, +2, +2. The highest and the lowest mark get cut. The average of the remaining 7 is 1.86. To calculate the GEO you now take the base value and do the following: 6 x 18.6% = 1.116 so about 1.12 points. The total points awarded for that jump would be: 7.12points
For combinations the base value of the hightest valued jumps is used to determine GOE, not the combined base value of the jumps.
As for step and choreographic sequences you multiply the average by 0.5 to get the GEO.
Yay! Maths :D
Highlight Distribution:
Jumps performed in the second half of the program are awarded a 1.1 multiplier of the the base value. E.g.: A 3A performed in the second half has a base value of 8.8 points.
Yuuri takes advantage of that a lot.
Prior to 2018 there was no limit on how backloaded (term used to describe programms with a lot of jumps in the second half) a program could be. Technically all jumps could be executed in the second half. However that left programs empty and boring in the first half since the skaters were basically just stalling time.
Now the multiplier is only applied to the first jump in the second half of the short and to the first 3 in the second half of the free. I am not opposed to that rule. The ISU made a rule that made sense for once
Deductions:
Of course, points are deducted for mistakes or other rule violations.
Deductions are:
Falls:
First two falls -1pt each. Third and fourth fall -2pt each. -3pt each for each fall after that.
Interruptions:
If the performance is interrupted by the skater, they lose -1pt for >10 but <20 secs, -2pt for >20 but <30 secs and -3 for >30 but <40. -5pt if the program isn't resumed withing 3 minutes.
Time violation:
-1pt per 5sec (program either too long or too short)
Costume/prop violations:
-1pt
A costume violation would for example be feathers (real feathers are prohibited), or if, for women, a boob falls out or something.
Props aren't allowed all together.
Part of the costume falls off on the ice:
-1pt
Somersault type jumps (aka Backflip):
-2pt
Late start:
Skater doesn't take starting position within 30 secs -1pt
Program Compoment Score (PCS):
The PCS used to be about the 5 following categories and is awarded by each judge on a scale from 0 - 10 in steps of 0.25. 5.00 Would be "average". As you may already be able to tell...this is not a very reliable way to judge this. Yeah...
Skating Skills:
Basically how good a skaters skating is. Can they skate with power and ease both forwards and backwards as well as clockwise and counter-clockwise? How clean and clear are the curves (edges) over the ice?
A skater should look effortless in their movement. Quick and easy, flowing over the ice with soft knees and ankles.
Their skating shouldn't be scratchy and noisy, resulting from pushing with the toe rather than the side of the blade.
Something you will often hear fans complain about or praise are edges. A Figure skate blade has two edges, outside and inside, and one sign of good skating skills is being able to go down deep on them. Look at Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir for example. Edges so deep the side of the boot almost touches the ice. Beautiful!
Tumblr media
Transitions:
The "in between" technical elements. You don't want to just skate between elements, you want to tie the program together with linking steps. Skaters idealy incorperate different steps and turns to make the programm seem seamless. You want there to be little (visible) prep time for the next element.
I will make another post regarding such steps and turns.
Performance:
This is one of the categories that is heavily dependent on the judges personal preference.
In this category skaters are judged based on their, well, performance... Are they emotionally, physically and mentally involved? Do they project the entire audience? Do they have good ice presence?
In the case of Yuri on Ice: this is where all the Katsudon, waterfalls, grandpas etc. come in. Yuuri seduced Viktor for those sweet PCS points haha xD
Composition:
In this category the placing of the elements across the ice surface are judged.
Idealy a skater should use as much of the entire ice surface as possible.
Then there's also questions such as if the spacing of the elements etc. has some sort of purpose. Is there a story told or idea conveyd? Does the movement match the phrasing of the music?
For this category, having a good choreographer comes in very handy ;)
Interpretation:
Again, heavily judge dependant...
Is the skater performing with their soul? Are they skating with music in the background or are they skating to the music, their movement matching the beats in it?
This is the "music" that Yuuri emits when skating according to Viktor! So this is something he is very good at and should receive high points in...if the judges actually do that is another question...
Calculation of PCS:
Very easy this time! It's just the average of the individual scores given by the judges. For the Free Skate the score is factored by 2.0, meaning it's doubled to balance it a little with the TES.
Further Resources:
Now this looks very overwhelming! But here are some pages to help you!
SkatingScores:
You can use this blank IJS sheet to easily calculate scores using the abbreviations I used in this post! They also are the best and biggest available data base for scores in figure skating and you can look up competitons and skaters here!
ISU Results:
If you want to find score sheets for a specific competition you want to reference, you can also quickly google "ISU results (competition)". For example, Grand Prix Final 2015:
There you can access the judges scores for the competion as pdfs.
So you want to watch figure skating?:
This blog is really helpful. They have various guides to figure skating as well, but be aware that they are of course up to date with the newest rules. But they also have a handbook with terms you will often hear and may want to use!
Further Notes:
Scoring in figure skating is highly controversial and in conversation with fans you will often hear terms such as over- and underscoring.
There is corruption, there is favoritism...you name it, figure skating probably has it...
If you want your characters to be upset about something in the sport, scoring is one of your safest bets.
You can have Yuuri's fans and probably Viktor too, be outraged by Yuuri's too low PCS, or the low GOE on his step sequence. Maybe they even rated that one a level 3 instead of the usual 4? Lot's of possibilities for frustration...
Another thing that is frustrating for Yuuri in particular is that jumps are worth so much more and make up a big chunk of the TES.
He is known for his intricate step sequences. But what does that matter if he can't get more than 5.4 points for it? And you rarely get full +3 GOE! The step sequence, which is such a vital part of a figure skating program and show cases such a varried skill set, is worth roughly the same as a triple flip max...
Sure there is the PCS, but here the judges are often biased, or simply don't know how to award points. It sometimes appears to be a bit arbitrary. Skaters who do a shit tone of cross overs suddenly get skating skill scores in the 9 point + range... It's bizarre.
Tumblr media
Anyway...I hope you enjoyed this guide and find it usefull! I will try to get the other parts to this out as soon as I can!
And if you read this far: thank you <3 Have a lovely rest of your day and have fun writing!

SALTWATER MELODIES CHAPTER 41
Mila looked back and forth at both of them, mouth flapping silently. “How?” she finally asked.
“We have no idea,” Viktor said. “Probably magic.”
“Magic is not real,” Chris sputtered.
“Sure looks real to me,” Yuri said.
After falling into a magical lagoon during a once-in-a-lifetime eclipse, music students Viktor, Mila, and Yuri find themselves transforming into merfolk whenever they touch water… and considering that they live on the coast, that’s probably going to cause some trouble. Things get even weirder when they discover strange powers that may have bigger effects on their daily lives than they could ever imagine.
Add to the mix a thalassophobic pianist, a marine biologist (possibly cryptozoologist) who might actually be completely insane, and a treasure-hunting Canadian… one thing’s for sure: their lives sure just got a whole lot more interesting.
In this chapter: It's Yuuri's birthday, and something seems to be bothering Viktor…
Chapter preview under the cut!
This year, Yuuri’s birthday fell on a Wednesday. Nearly everyone was busy, and the only person celebrating the day with him besides his parents and sister ended up being Minako, who left the cafe to Yuuko and Phichit for the evening. Phichit had surprised Yuuri with his favorite cafe’s lemon-blueberry pancakes that morning, and everyone had texted him to wish him a happy birthday throughout the day.
It all felt a little more… well, subdued this year. Which was odd, considering that this was Yuuri’s big twenty-first birthday. But it couldn’t be helped that everyone was busy, it was in the middle of a busy season and right after a national holiday, blah blah.
Yuuri was a tad bit disappointed, all the same. Hopefully, his promised day of hanging out with Viktor would make up for it.
He stared at the little flame for a long moment, and a single thought crystallized in his mind: I wish Viktor could trust me with whatever’s bothering him. He blew it out, and watched the smoke dancing up from the blackened wick.
Start from the beginning HERE / new chapter HERE

Edit: images in my fic are now fixed!! 😅
Fellow Yuri!!! On Ice fans, need something new to read?
For a long time, I’ve felt like there is an almost criminally small number of "future fic"/married Viktuuri stories in this fandom, so I set out to change this, and just posted the first 3 chapters of a new story, link here
This story will be updated every week, and features happily married Yuuri and Viktor in the lead-up to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, as well as during various points over the years, post-canon (and also switches point of view). Viktor is prepared to support his two skaters (Yuuri and Yurio) as they battle it out for gold, but the past has a way of making itself known, even when everyone is trying to keep their focus on the future. The events of the 2018 PyeongChang Games completely transformed the lives and career trajectories of many in the world of elite figure skating, and it’s with these impacts in mind that our beloved YOI characters are looking to make history (again).
In total, this work will be at least 20 chapters, and I’ve already written over half (ten chapters, plus various one-shots set in the same fic universe).
Below is an excerpt from Ch 1 to whet your appetite, happy reading!
“Let’s be honest, though, unlike certain other individuals who are much more practiced in calling me on my bullshit, I think Izumi’s hero worship allows her to let me off the hook far more than she should. All that ‘Viktor-sensei’ business, and whatnot.”
Yurio snorted. At Viktor’s raised eyebrows, he pinned him to the spot with a defiant stare.
“I wouldn’t worry about that too much, old man,” he said, scathingly. “All it took was one instance of you skating into the boards because you were too busy staring at Katsudon’s ass, and Izumi’s fangirling ended pretty damn quick.”
He felt Yuuri laugh into his shoulder and resisted the urge to pout.
“Though that happens rarely,” he replied, pointedly, raising his voice over Yurio’s rebuttal of “try twice a week, you pervert!”, “what I’m trying to get at is that you’ve deserved far better than I’ve given recently.”

Hi! How are you? I hope you're doing well ❤️
I'm new in the fandom and I'm looking for some fics centered around the banquet! Maybe Victor's pov, maybe a yuuri remembers au... It can be anything really.
Thanks a lot!
Hello and welcome to the fandom!
Here are banquet-centered fics I rec
Bottom's Up by @cryingoverspilledvodka, @lucycamui [T, 4K]
At the Grand Prix banquet, Victor's been asked to sign an autograph for a very enthusiastic fan. Unfortunately, there's a distinct lack of paper around. Fortunately, Yuuri has a suggestion. Alternatively titled, "Ever Seen An Ass So Fine You Had To Sign It 'Mine'? or "Autograph Me (Wherever You'd Like)"
Just Hold On (We're Going Home) by @kiaronna [M, 23K]
Where Yuuri remembers the banquet, Viktor forgets, and Yakov Feltsman has his own plans.
“I’ve been made aware of your recent break with Celestino Cialdini, and would like to offer you a trial period where you train under me, in St. Petersburg. There are only three conditions: you will board with another one of my students, you will take ballet with Madame Baranovskaya, and you will help me coach Yuri Plisetsky, who refuses to listen to my criticisms of his spins.” Yakov nods at this point, leans forwards and looks Yuuri in the eye. “I will charge no coaching fees.” With a deal like that, even if it means he has to face Viktor again, Yuuri has no choice but to agree.
say you'll remember by anyadisee [T, 18K]
It’s not that Yuuri blames Celestino, though. That’s really not it. He knows what Celestino’s feelings and intentions were – he’s not just a coach to Yuuri, after all, but also a friend. He worries, looks out for Yuuri, and tries to bring him out of the shell he always retreats to when things don’t go his way. If anything, it was Yuuri’s mistake. He knows how he is with alcohol. He should’ve known better.
But. What’s done is done. The only thing he can do now is damage control.
[or, in which yuuri remembers the banquet happenings]
you say sochi, i say fuck me by @spookyfoot [T, 5K]
“You couldn’t find your room key,” Victor continues, “and I certainly wasn’t going to let you sleep alone.”
“What…happened?” Yuuri squeaks, wincing. His voice cracks in a way it hasn’t since Victor skated to Rite of Spring.
“Oh!” Victor somehow leans even closer and now Yuuri can see Victor has a matching set of freckles scattered across his nose. “You showed me your pole!”
“Oh my god.” But clearly God is dead because Yuuri is still alive right now.
Victor continues, utterly oblivious to Yuuri’s distress, “….dancing skills. Pole dancing skills. Sorry, I had your come stuck in my throat.” He punctuates it with a conspiratorial wink.
Yuuri stares, dumfounded as his brain goes offline. He's not sure which part of that sentence is more horrifying.

Why Yuuri (before 2017) should not be allowed to write an autobiography
Okay, to those who might not follow figure skating as closely, I just need to point out that Yuuri, despite what he insists (unreliable narrator), did not do badly in the Sochi GPF.
We know from the flashback in episode 5 that Yuuri during his free skate fell on at least two of his jumps and touched down on one and it can be assumed he didn't do too well on his others. He says in episode 4 that he falls on jumps and makes up the gap with Program Component Scores (how artistic it was) which can also be seen on the protocol from his short program where his PCS is higher than his Technical Element Score (how technically sound it was). This is not how those scores usually relate except in certain cases (see Jason Brown, also known for his high PCS and (relatively) low TES though this is by choice).
This is Yuuri's short program protocol. If you don't know how to read this then all you need to know is that his total score was 82.80, 40.42 of that being TES and 42.38 being PCS.
Tumblr media
Now, to relate that to the real world, in the 2015 Grand Prix Final, Daisuke Murakami scored a total of 235.49, scoring 83.47 in his short program and 152.02 in his free skate and placing 6th. As we can see, that's pretty darn close to Yuuri's score (82.80 in the short, 149.79 in the free, 232.59 total) and I would not be surprised if they were inspired by his scores since they're also PCS centric.
Sidenote: Looking at Yuuri's PCS here and comparing them to Murakami's, Yuuri's are higher, not having anything lower than 8.00. Based on the fact that he was likely very off-kilter, I'd say this is still a very respectable score (duh, Yuuri just can't accept that he's good). Boyang Jin who took 3rd in the short, 5th overall in the 2015 GPF had way lower PCS scores.
Anyway, here's Murakami's free skate protocol.
Tumblr media
Murakami has 8 jumping passes in his free, 7 of which he lands with a two-footed landing on one and a stepout on another. He only falls ass on ice like Yuuri does once on his second quadruple salchow (which was supposed to be a combination. The << and REP are explained at the bottom of the protocol). He does not touch down at any point. Otherwise his jumps look fine to me, most of them barely having any ice spray and only his 3Lz+1Lo+2S combination getting a warning for an unclear edge.
If you don't know, falling is (kind of) the worst mistake you can make on a jump and the judges are required to both give a certain negative GEO (grade of execution) and a deduction of 1 point. Other mess-ups just give negative GEOs.
Murakami's FS score is 73.26 TES and 79.76 PCS which would mean Yuuri's scores are likely very similar. But he fell on two jumps, not one meaning his PCS would likely have been higher to make up the difference.
And if Yuuri's insinuation that he flubbed all his jumps in some manner is true (which I find highly unlikely, have some confidence) and he missed elements by either popping (opening too early which costs rotations but saves you from a fall) or just not doing them, his PCS would have needed to be even higher to make up for that.
Missing elements, like popping a double, triple or quadruple axel into a single (at least one double is required), results in that element not being counted at all. Zero. Zip. Nada. You get nothing for it if you can't make up for it later in the program. Even falling on a jump is better because that's at least a few points. So if that happened, he'd have a big gap to make up with his PCS.
To sum up: with everything that could have gone wrong for Yuuri, this is still a very good score, even on the international scene. And to highlight that, Murakami is happy when he finishes, even fist pumping.
And yes, there was still that 103.17 point gap between Yuuri and Viktor which is the same (okay, 94.95) for Murakami and Yuzuru Hanyu who took gold in the 2015 GPF. But, and I cannot stress this enough, Hanyu broke 3 world records with that score meaning Viktor likely did as well. No wait, scratch that, I know he did because Hanyu's score was 330.43 which Viktor beat by 5.33 points. Of course it's not going to be even close, are you kidding me?
Looking at the World Championships in 2016, Yuuri would, with that 232.59 score, still have taken 11th place. He'd have taken 16th in 2023 and that's with a single quad (I don't trust his quad salchow yet) in the age of quads (and that quad being the one with the lowest base value). I'm positive he'd have been able to do a Jason Brown whose PC scores are so good that he in 2023 placed 5th without a single quad and would have placed 3rd in 2016. Now, take that and throw Yuuri's quad toe loop and some confidence in there and you've got a Worlds podium finish before the series even starts.
And then in the season the show is in, he has his quad toe loop, quad salchow and quad flip. He might even have gotten the quad loop down in the 3.5 months between the Barcelona GFP and Worlds. I definitely see a world champion on the next level (if they'd give us it >:[ )
And scores always get higher over time, the world record having gone from Hanyu's 330.46 in 2015 to Nathan Chen's 335.30 in 2019 still standing in 2023 which is still less than Viktor's Sochi GFP score (335.76) (yes, the system has changed since 2015 but it's close enough that it doesn't really matter in this context. Viktor is OP no matter what).
Really, the fact that Yuuri's in the GFP at all should be all we need to know that he's insanely good. It might not technically be Worlds but my stars, Yuuri, it does basically make you 6th in the world.
BE. PROUD.

I'm currently including the comments from my beta in "Can You Hear My Heartbeat" and I just came across the scene from ep. 4 in which Yuuri wakes Viktor up to show him the music for his free programme and I'm laughing so hard right now because I totally forgot how that scene ends in my fic:
“So, you like it?”
“It’s a beautiful piece, Yuuri. Tomorrow, we’ll start choreographing it.”
We! He said we! Can I actually do this? “Th-thank you,” Yuuri spluttered.
“I’ll think of something until then. And now, please get off me, Yuuri.”
“Huh?”
An awkward silence passed in which they stared at each other. Under Viktor’s gaze, Yuuri gradually felt more foolish. They were so close that Yuuri’s skin warmed under the heat Viktor radiated. He smelled like summer meadows after the rain. Yuuri wanted to reach out to trace a finger along Viktor’s collarbone, down to his sternum, which seemed to emit a very potent version of his fragrance, and map the veins of those well-muscled arms. His hair had felt so soft and so silken when Yuuri had touched it at the rink! Would his skin feel soft, too?
“Yuuri!”
Hands closed around his wrists.
“I like the feeling of you sitting on my lap, but you really should get off me now.”
What? In his excitement, Yuuri had paid no attention to his seat. But the hard object below the blanket just under him certainly was not a flashlight. He shrieked and jumped off the bed.
“Sorry!”
“Never mind.” Viktor rolled to the side, a smile of bemusement on his lips. “Sweet dreams, Yuuri.”
“You, too,” Yuuri blurted. Then, realising what he had just implied, he fled the room.
How was he supposed to find sleep after this?
Read the first 25 chapters of the unbeta'ed version here.
Edit: I apologise for the earlier spelling "mistakes"! In my Word documents, I contract the double consonant of Yuuri's name to Yūri because it looks more natural to me. Sometimes, I forget to change this when I post snippets. Technically, that's not wrong, but I know that no one in this fandom spells his name this way.

Little! Yuuri and CG!Viktor
❄️Yuuri tells his fiance about his littlespace, and Viktor insists he be Yuuri's caregiver. It doesn't go quite like he planned❄️
Author's note: This story contiains minor hurt/comfort. It's nothing bad! Yuuri is just really bad at communication. This is kind of me projecting how I think I'll act if I ever get a cg. I didn't notice I accidentally posted this early. I had to finish writing it after I posted it.
Yuuri Katsuki- professional figure skater and fiance to the legendary Viktor Nikiforov- was a hair's breath away from running out of their shared apartment. They weren't fighting, he was just over thinking. Anxiety clawed at his stomach as he looked at the man who had said yes to marrying him (he was still having a hard time believing that). He took a deep breath, trying to calm his ever frazzled nerves. He felt a hand rest gently on his.
"You're overthinking again, Yuuri. If you don't tell me now, you never will." Viktor smiled at the other man and gave it a gentle squeeze. Yuuri brought the russian's hand up to press a kiss to his wrist.
"You know me too well. It's nothing bad, I promise. It's just... people tend to jump to conclusions. So, there's this thing called age regression. It's nothing like...that. I just tend to slip into a child like headspace sometimes to cope with stuff. It helps with my anxiety and my self-esteem." Viktor took a second to observe the information before nodding slowly.
"Ok." Yuuri blinked.
"Ok?"
"Yup! So, you're a little Yuuri when like that?"
"E-essentially?"
"Perfect! You obviously need someone to take care of you then! Obviously it should be me!" Yuuri's jaw dropped at his fiancé's enthusiasm.
"You want to take care of me?"
"Da! I love you, Yuuri, and I want to make sure you're taken care of no matter the age." Yuuri felt his heart melt at those words.
"Ok, we can do that. But, just so you know, I'm very quiet and very independent when I'm little. I've never had a caregiver, so I had to take care of myself."
"That's alright! We can make a list of rules for both of us! That way, you can still keep your sense of independence, but still get the love and care you need." Yuuri smiled, tears pricking his chocolate eyes.
"Yeah...yeah, that sounds good."
-❄️-
Days had passed since Viktor's insistence that he be Yuuri's caregiver. Their rules-while few- were just a building block. They could add to or take away any of these rules:
If Yuuri wanted a snack he would get it, so long as it didn't involve any kitchen tools (ex. knives, the stove, the oven).
Yuuri, while potty trained in his little space, would still wear pullups (note- this went unargued, since it was something Yuuri had been meaning to try for a few years. He just never had the time or means to really experiment with his little space).
If Yuuri decided he needed space, Viktor would give it to him (note- this also went unargued).
Neither Viktor nor Yuuri would try to force either party's headspaces.
With these baseline rules set, they decided to try to coax Yuuri into his headspace on their next off day. Viktor had helped him into a pull up, changed him into one of his own sweaters and a pair of pajama pants, and had been gently cooing about what an adorable little boy he was. As he slid on a second sock onto the little, he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. He looked up to see Yuuri chewing on the sleeve of the sweater. Viktor sat up and gently pulled the sweater out of his little's mouth.
"Oh, sweet boy, that's not for chewing. Here, try this instead." He pressed a dark blue, moon themed paci against Yuuri's lips. The little looked at it hesitantly for a few seconds before opening his mouth and letting the rubber nipple rest against his tongue. Viktor beamed as the plastic started to bob under the little's nose. He held his arms out as he stood.
"Do you want me to carry you, baby?" He watched as different emotions flashed across Yuuri's face. Eventually, the boy shook his head and stood up. He reached out and held onto Viktor's shirt. The russian man smiled softly and kissed Yuuri's forehead.
"Alright, snowflake. That's perfectly fine." Although he had wanted to pick him up, he knew how independent Yuuri said he was. He would take what Yuuri gave him, telling himself the little would open up in his own time.
The two walked down the stairs together. Viktor settled Yuuri at the coffee table with some crayons and coloring books. He ruffled the boy's hair with a smile.
The day continued on in much the same way. Viktor would offer something to Yuuri (be it affection, offering to hand him something across the room so he didn't have to walk as far, or offering to join the little in his activities), Yuuri would think about it for a second, then he would shake his head and either do it himself or continue what he was doing. While he tried to stay supportive and let Yuuri come to him in his own time, Viktor would be lying if he said he wasn't getting a little upset. While Yuuri was shy about giving or receiving affection in the beginning of their relationship, but they had been working on that.
These thoughts ran through his mind as he made dinner. He was so lsot in his head that he didn't notice the ever observant eyes of one paci-weilding toddler in the living room staring him down.
Yuuri had been watching his caregiver for the last few minutes, but he had been observing him for the last hour or two. He could tell by Viktor's movements that something was wrong. He just didn't know what it could have been! He had been making sure to stay out of the way! He didn't want to bother his caregiver with-.
His eyes widened slightly in realization. Viktor wanted to take care of him. He hadn't offered out of pity or out of fear that Yuuri would leave him if he didn't agree to it. He actually wanted to be his caregiver-to help him through a comfort that he himself had turned into a chore. Tears sprang in his eyes as his bottom lip wobbled. He hiccup lightly behind the paci before opening his mouth and letting out a heartbreaking wail.
Viktor was snapped out of his thoughts by the sounds of his baby letting out the most upsetting cry he had ever heard him make. He turned the stove off and ran into the living room, where Yuuri sat. His face was turning red as large crocodile tears rolled down his cheeks. His paci had fallen onto the carpet beside him.
"Yuuri? What's wrong, baby?! Are you hurt?!" Viktor crouched beside him and started looking for any injuries. He was shocked when Yuuri's arms flew up, making grabby hands at him in the universal sign for 'uppies'. Viktor wasted no time in sccoping his little boy into his lap, rubbing soothing circles into his back.
"Sh, sh. You're ok. See, Papa's right here. I've got you, snowflake. Deep breaths for me, that's it." He kept whispering into Yuuri's hair until his sobs turned into hiccups, and his hiccups into shakey but calm breaths. Yuuri burried his face in Viktor's neck.
"Whats got my sweet baby so upset, hm?" He wasn't shocked when he didn't get a response, jsut the tightening of hands against the fabric of his shirt. He just nodded, knowing exactly what Yuuri ment.
For the rest of the day, Yuuri would either be on Viktor's lap or on his hip. When he came back up the next morning, he realized that this was the first time he was little that the underlying adult kept one hand on the controls. It was the first time he slid all the way into little space.
A small smile spread on his face as he wrapped his arms around his soon to be husband. They were definitely doing that again.

Leroy Wins Ninth National Title in Dominating Fashion
Leroy brothers go 1-2 for fourth straight year
January 14, 2024
CALGARY, AB – Jean-Jacques Leroy won his ninth straight national title by a dominating almost twenty-eight points. The reigning Olympic Champion scored 112.72 for his short program and 225.38 for his free skate for an overall score of 338.00, the highest score of the season by any skater so far. “I’m so happy to be able to do this kind of skate at home,” said the 26-year-old. “I know I can go and win Worlds, and it’s at home in Canada this year. I’m going to do everything I can to make my country proud of me.”
Younger brother Louis Leroy won his fourth straight silver medal. The 22-year-old scored personal best scores of 102.87 and 207.37 for the free skate and an overall score of 310.24. “I’m just looking for great performances at Four Continents and Worlds,” said the former Junior World silver medalist. “I’m thrilled with how I’ve performed here, and have been working very hard with my coaches.” Leroy is coached in Japan by Olympic Gold Medalists Yuuri Katsuki and Viktor Nikiforov.
Teenager Justin Hwang captured a surprise bronze medal here at the event, though well below his countrymates. His scored personal best scores in all three events – 88.98, 143.17 (only fourth in the free skate), and 232.15 overall. “I am so happy for this medal,” said the 18-year-old. “I knew I could, but to actually win a bronze medal at Nationals, to be a National medalist, is amazing.” Hwang will be looking to have two more good performances at Four Continents to secure a first-time time trip to his home Worlds.
