The amazing @nae812 gifted me with another beautiful artwork for Can You Hear My Heartbeat and I want to share it with you (check out the other one here). It's for the beach scene in Chapter 18, in which Yuuri and Viktor make a trip through the countryside of Hasetsu during the summer of mutual pining:

Excerpt:
He had read only two pages when his phone buzzed.
Frowning, he picked up it from the nightstand. His heart did a flip as he recognised the sender.
[This was a wonderful day. Thank you, Yuuri.]
Attached to the message were three pictures. Recognition set in the moment Yuuri opened them. The first was the one the stranger from the main island had taken of them and Makkachin at the waterfall. A second one Viktor had taken on the beach as they had lain on the blanket, again with Makkachin between them. A third showed Yuuri on Mount Tenzan, sitting with his legs angled, gazing into the distance with a thoughtful expression. Viktor must have shot it when he had photographed the panorama.
We look happy, Yuuri thought regarding the beach photo, while patting Makkachin absentmindedly. Even when we’re bickering.
Weirdly, Viktor had not sent the one where they were both looking to the camera, but the one he had shot when Yuuri had said something about poor illumination due to the waning daylight. He teased me about it, and I laughed.
I was right, Yuuri thought as he studied the muted colours. Despite the fading light, their eyes shone as if a sliver of the sun was burning in them as they gazed at each other. This is how he looks at me when he’s lovestruck. A pleasant chill ran through him, releasing an echo of that moment on the beach. He’s been looking at me like this all the time, but I needed a photo to notice.

A while ago, I commissioned the wonderful and talented @nae812 to draw a scene from my YOI novelisation Can You Hear My Heartbeat. The scene is part of the Tanabata* chapter, set during the summer of mutual pining, and I'm very proud to share the absolutely gorgeous result with you:

They fell silent, watching the stars. But Yuuri’s heart refused to be still.
“O-hoshi-sama,” Viktor murmured, gazing at the sky. “I get it now. How can you look at the universe spinning in the sky and simply call them hoshi?”
Yuuri smiled. “Yeah. The stars are that majestic.”
“I like it. This is the most beautiful night of my life so far, Yuuri. Not even the White Nights can compare to this.”
The warm, reverent nuance in his voice made Yuuri tremble. This night, this place—it created a closeness he had never felt before with Viktor. As if a bridge had emerged from the sea of stars between them.
“Um, Viktor. There’s something you should know.”
“Huh?”
“There’s an even larger Tanabata festival held in Fukuoka.” The words welled out of Yuuri, encouraged by the darkness engulfing them and because they were not facing each other. “It’s because they have a huge Tanabata shrine there. I… I didn’t suggest it because you wanted to see the fireworks, but we wouldn’t have been able to stay that late because we’d need to catch the last train back. And I didn’t want to take the van because I wasn’t sure if I’d want to drink and I also don’t like to drive at night.” And because it would have been a date then. “My apologies.”
“No, Yuuri,” Viktor said softly. “I’m glad we stayed here. Fukuoka is likely overcrowded tonight and I don’t want to do that to Makkachin. Besides, here we have a better view of the stars because of less—how did you call it?”
“Light pollution.”
“Right.” Viktor’s voice was warm in the night as if he was smiling. “Thanks for introducing me to this festival, Yuuri.”
Yuuri thought back to the wish he had written on the red tanzaku. I wish that I’ll figure out my feelings for Viktor. I wish it to be love.
“I’m glad we came here, too.”
A reddish shine illuminated the lookout, followed by a cracking noise that ruptured the silence. “The fireworks have started!” Yuuri said. “Let’s watch!”
They hurried to a spot where the trees parted. Orange sparks rose into the sky and blossomed into colourful stars, illuminating rooftops and the people cramming on the beach and along the bridges, glittering on the bay. A sudden giddiness rose in Yuuri.
“When I was younger, I often imagined what it would be like to celebrate Tanabata with you,” he said. Each year, he had written a wish for it and hung it on a tree. “I didn’t ask you because I didn’t know how to do it without things taking a weird turn.”
“Really?” Viktor’s voice was hushed with an undercurrent of excitement.
Yuuri nodded. “The last weeks were very nice. I would have hated to ruin that.”
A hand touched Yuuri’s shoulder, stirring a swarm of butterflies in his stomach. “I enjoy our time together very much, too.”
“Yeah,” Yuuri said. His heart fluttered.
They fell silent, watching the colourful sparks blossoming above the town, mirrored on the silent river. The hand remained on his shoulder and Yuuri found he liked it being there.
“Yuuri?”
“Hum?”
“Will you tell me what you wished for?”
“No, Viktor.”
“I’ll tell you what I wished for in return.”
“It won’t come true when you say it aloud.”
“But if a wish isn’t voiced no one will know and they won’t do anything about it.”
“The gods will.”
If I were already sure of my feelings, this would have been the perfect date, Yuuri mused.
“Will you tell me your wish when it comes true?”
You will know when it comes true, Yuuri thought, struggling to tame the tempest of emotions raging within his heart. “Yes,” he said, leaning his head against Viktor’s shoulder. “I will.”
-- Chapter 17: So close and yet a universe apart
*On Tanabata or the Star Festival:
According to a legend, Princess Orihime fell in love with a cow herd named Hikoboshi, and their love was so great that both neglected their duties whereopun Orihime's father, the Emperor, banished the pair to the heavens with the Milky Way separating them. Orihime became the star Vega and Hikoboshi became the star Altair. Only once a year, in the seventh night of the seventh month, they can meet--but only if the skies are clear.
Tanabata (七夕) is celebrated in July, but in some regions, it's celebrated in August (depending on whether the Gregorian calendar or the lunar calendar is used). The stars Vega and Altair are visible in Japan from July to September. There's a couple of customs surrounding the festival, one of them is to write your wishes on paper strips and hang them on a bamboo tree. These trees are set afloat or burnt during the night. Tanabata is a very popular festival in Japan and often referred to as the most romantic night of the year. However, since in most regions, the rainy season lasts until August, the chances for clear skies are 30% on average and thus people pray for good weather several days in advance.

I guess that for most YOI fans this is no longer any news, so if that's the case, please ignore me. I did a quick research to confirm that the hotel the characters stay in during the Cup of China is Hotel Nikko New Century Beijing--and yep, that's it:
the hotel in YOI:
Tumblr media
Note the shadow in the upper right corner? That's the other single bed. Viktor's? That better be so since they're already used to sleeping cuddled up to each other.
Now here's the actual hotel (from Google Maps):
Tumblr media
Looks similar, right? They even used the hideous carpet.
So, why this hotel?
First, it's right next to Capital Indoor Stadium where the Cup of China is held in YOI.
Second, the real-world event was held in the same venue in 2015 with this very hotel being the official hotel for athletes, coaching team and ISU staff, so I guess that was when Sayo Yamamoto und Mitsurou Kubo visited the place to gather reference material for the animation. (Although the Cup of China was held there in 2016 as well including the same official hotel, I mention thet 2015 event because by the time it was held in 2016, YOI was already produced and airing.)
Again, this is old news, but since I'm posting the first Cup of China chapter of my YOI novelisation tomorrow, I had a last-minute panic attack I might have fantasised the hotel name and checked again to make sure I'm not talking bullshit in the chapter notes because I did this research like 3 years ago.

I know a story needs a compelling plot, good characterisation and stuff so that people will actually read and enjoy it, but sometimes all I want is writing viktuuri alternately worshipping or railing each other. Like screw plot, I want them to be madly and irrevocably in love.

Since the end of this month is approaching with lightning speed, I'm in the middle of the final edits of the two chapters of Can You Hear My Heartbeat that are scheduled for May and I'm having a hard time holding myself back with spoilers and teasers, but I want you to know that the chapter titles are:
The man who took Viktor Nikiforov from the world
The Eros-off-ice programme
Do with that what you wish. You're welcome.
(final edits = fixing minor issues like poor wording, grammar and spelling mistakes, and incorporating comments and corrections from my beta and my sensitivity reader)

Vitya being so turned on by the mere thought of Yuuri beating him in competition that Yuuri had to cockblock him because my Yuuri is a tease it was in the middle of practice wasn't in the outline of that scene I just wrote. I really don't know what happened there. Things just got pretty intense.
Can't wait to write about the first competition at which they will face-off!

trick or treat!
Thank you so much for the ask!
Here’s a tidbit from my headcanon:
Depending on the circumstances, Yuuri calls Viktor either Viktor, Vitya, or Vitka. The first is actually canon and you could interpret this as a term of endearment because in Japanese, the honorific is omitted when you address people you're very close with like your partner (except for Phichit, Yuuri doesn’t address foreigners with honorific, and you can interpret this any way you like, but I roll with the intimacy the omitted honorific suggests because to Yuuri, Viktor is not just some foreigner).
Now, following Russian name convention, once Yuuri starts calling Viktor “Vitya” (the canonic diminutive of Viktor, not the most intimate term of endearment, though), Viktor would expect Yuuri to stick with that. However, as a foreigner, Yuuri is forgiven for switching between this and "Viktor" and reserves "Vitya" for romantic and tender situations because he knows that Viktor loves it when Yuuri calls him that. And knowing Japanese love language, “my” Viktor is totally fine with that.
So, what about Vitka?
That’s a colloquial diminutive of Viktor (still not the most intimate form though, but I can't see Yuuri calling him "Vitenka", so I've been willfully avoiding that one so far and I really believe that in an intercultural relationship rules can be bent to accommodate both partners) and here things become juicy because Vitka can have a bit of a derogatory touch when used without permission/not being close to that person and thus can also be used as an insult. But (and now comes the juicy part) there are certain situations in bed when Yuuri actually calls Viktor “Vitka”, like when he's in Eros mode and his possessive and dominant side shows, and “my” Viktor is so turned on by that. So, whenever Yuuri calls Viktor that, Viktor knows immediately what it means.
This post turned out longer than I thought, sorry for that.
Happy Halloweeen!
This ask was part of a game as described in this post.

Happy Birthday to the most precious and most beautiful Katsudon in anime history!
I wanted to celebrate Yuuri's birthday with something fresh, but lacked the time to come up with an idea, so I'm sharing the one-shot I wrote for his birthday last year. The story starts off a bit sad and angsty, but I promise that it will become cheerful and silly after a while.
Summary:
After another failed attempt at qualifying for the Grand Prix Final, Yuuri returns to Detroit on his birthday, defeated, disheartened, and determined to quit skating. All he wants is to mourn his missed chance to skate on the same ice as his long-time crush and idol in peace. But his roommate Phichit has different plans. For a defeat is no reason to give up on your greatest dream.
"We rarely ever talked because I always put him on such a high pedestal."
Buildings flitted by, veiled behind drifts of snow that came down from monotonous grey heavens and buried the monumental skyline of Detroit under the icing of the first blizzard of the season. Christmas lights defied the murk, where one week ago the facades of shops, office buildings, and tenements had loomed unadorned and naked. The sight held no joy for Yuuri as he gazed out of the window, his mind blank, his heart heavy.
Another attempt. Another failure. Another chance wasted.
The story of the unsensational life of Katsuki Yuuri.
He had moved here to start all over, but so far, thousands of hours of sweat, tears, and bruises had been in vain.
I couldn’t even work up the courage to talk to him.
Images of another figure skater stole into Yuuri’s mind as if they would ever leave for long. His dazzling smile when he greeted his fans and fellow skaters. His immaculate jumps with those swift running edges. His elegant posture that spoke of hours of ballet training. His beautiful twizzles. His flexibility when he pulled up his free leg from a layback position into a tight Biellmann spin as no other male skater could. The effortlessness with which he danced across the ice. The focus in his keen eyes of the blue of a clear winter morning. The way the see-through sleeves of his dark-red costume had emphasised his muscular arms as he had skated to Tango de Roxanne that weekend. The way he swept back his silver-blonde hair that shimmered like starlight.
That one time during warm-up… he was so close I could have touched him.

Can You Hear My Heartbeat Chapter 32
Summary:
At the Cup of China, restraining his burning desire for Yuuri quickly becomes the least of Viktor's concerns. Being a coach and being taken seriously as a coach are two entirely different pairs of skates.
“Listen,” Viktor told the concierge with his most dazzling smile. “I’m sure this is just a misunderstanding. We’ve booked a double room, not a twin room.”
“Please wait. I’m rechecking your booking.” The concierge glanced at the key Viktor had put on the counter and typed the number into his computer. “Your booking is correct, Mr. Nikiforov. A double room for four nights.”
“The room you gave us is a twin room. With two small beds. We’ve booked a room with one large bed.”
The concierge’s face lit up. “Ah! Twin room!”
He’s confusing both terms, Viktor realised. He was displeased with the way the hotel was handling him and Yuuri albeit apparently by accident. He and Yuuri had tried to move the beds together first thing after their check-in. But the beds were installed on a wall panel. Why on earth would two adults book one room if they were not romantically involved? Did friends do such a thing?
“My most sincere apologies, Mr. Nikiforov, for assigning you and Mr. Katsuki the wrong room,” the concierge interrupted Viktor’s exasperated contemplation with a polite smile, but the way he avoided Viktor’s gaze spoke tales of his embarrassment.
“Can you assign us a double room?” After a six-hour flight with an intermediate stop in Taipei City and a total travel time of twelve hours from Hasetsu to Nikko New Century Hotel in Beijing, immediately followed by one hour of public practice in the Capital Indoor Stadium, Viktor’s patience had surrendered to hunger and exhaustion. “A room with one big bed,” he added to quell any further potential misunderstandings.
“Please wait. I’m checking the available rooms.” Again, the concierge typed into his computer. He frowned and Viktor’s heart sank. “I am sorry, Mr. Nikiforov. All rooms with big beds are taken.” He hesitated. “As this misunderstanding is on our side, we will reduce your bill to the difference in price.”
“This is very accommodating of you, but as the ISO is paying for our stay, that’s the least of my concerns. Mr. Katsuki is very dear to me. I need him well rested for the next two days, and I’m afraid that will only happen if he can sleep by my side as he is used to.” Viktor pulled a bunch of Yuan notes from his wallet and shoved them across the counter. “If there is any room fitting our parameters that might be available, I would be your most grateful guest and recommend this hotel to everyone in the figure skating community who happens to visit this city of historical significance.” He winked.
The concierge paled a little. “I am truly sorry, Mr. Nikiforov,” he said, glancing at the money. “We are booked up because of the Cup of China. As an apology, I will send a bottle of Duval-Leroy to your room.”
Viktor whistled quietly. “Yuuri!” he called across the lobby. “Wanna drink champagne tonight?”

Here's my last piece for Viktuuri Week!
Today's theme was "soulmates" and I've combined it with Yuuri and Viktor's mutual passion because that's how they connect with each other.
Half My Soul
Summary:
On a sweltering summer's day, Yuuri and Viktor have a unexpected conversation about their mutual passion that lays bare what draws them to each other...
“I know how I must jump to land in a particular spot on the ice, how much weight I must put on my edges to do a certain move, and the exact way I must arch my body to create a specific position. It fills me with a deep satisfaction. In a way, I lose myself in this, too.”
A new sense of warmth cast a smile on Yuuri’s face. He thought of Viktor’s immaculate jumps, his deep and sharp edges, and his elegant refined body lines and how these blended into a perfectly orchestrated performance. The crunch of the ice at take-off, the precise calligraphy those golden blades wrote into the ice, and the soft exhale of air at the landing were etched into the canvas of Yuuri's heart, for they were unique to him.
“This sounds very nerdy, Viktor.”
This was a fun event! Thank you for hosting it! 💖

"Can You Hear My Heartbeat" Chapter 27 is up!
Summary:
With a deafening clatter, Viktor’s bike crashed onto the pavement as he flung his arms around Yuuri. “Yuuri! I’m so happy you asked!”
This chapter is one of those very first parts I wrote back in 2021, when I was convinced that this story was going to be a one-shot collection instead of a full-fledged YOI novelisation of 350k words in total 😅 The first few paragraphs are below the read-more tag due to a spoiler.
Tumblr media
“It’s only three weeks until the Cup of China,” Yuuri said as they crossed the foyer of Ice Castle. “In my mind, it’s still summer. Time’s running so fast.” Too fast. Looking back, the summer was a dream-like haze of morning runs, refrigerated rinks, summer meadows, swims in the ocean, baths in the hot spring, and nocturnal campfires on the beach. He could not remember ever having enjoyed himself this much.
“Still, it feels as if I’ve been here forever,” Viktor said wistfully.
“Yeah,” Yuuri agreed. “It wouldn’t have been the same without you.”
They shared a look that spoke of more than words. And like it had so often recently, Yuuri’s heart did a giddy quad jump.
A cold gust of wind greeted them outside, whirling golden leaves through the air, ousting all foolish thoughts as Yuuri tried to get used to the autumnal morning. He pulled the zipper of his parka up to his chin. Only a handful of people lingered outside, waiting to catch a glimpse of their top skater and his famous coach. Most townsfolk had grown accustomed to their sight, and the initial hype had long burned out. Yuuri and Viktor waved at them and bid them a good day.
Viktor unlocked his bike and they set off down the road. More leaves tumbled onto the pavement, spinning in spirals and whirls. Yuuri could have watched them for hours lost in fantasies of those leaves turning into figure skaters dancing Agape and Eros intertwined.
One week had passed since Yuuri had voiced his kokuhaku. One week of contemplating the best way to proceed. One week too long. Viktor had responded as desired, and now it was Yuuri’s turn. As he gazed at the autumnal town spreading in front of him in the mellow October light, his determination hardened.
Under a tree, he stopped, clenching his fists.
“Viktor.”
Viktor stopped, confusion playing on his angelic features.
“Let’s do something together.” Heat flared up on Yuuri’s face. That had come out the wrong way. “But not like gaming or swimming in the ocean—it’s too cold for the latter anyway. Let’s go out. Like, let’s start seeing each other. I mean, not like we see each other every day. But in a romantic way.”
Viktor blinked. Then his eyes which were like slivers of the autumn sky widened. “Are you asking me on a date, Yuuri?”
Yuuri nodded. “But… I’ve never dated before. There’s not much one can do in this town except for karaoke, and I’m still traumatised from that one.” The heat on his face intensified. I’m so awkward. This is so embarrassing! “But I really want to start dating you. I’ve—”
With a deafening clatter, Viktor’s bike crashed onto the pavement as he flung his arms around Yuuri. “Yuuri! I’m so happy you asked!”

Can You Hear My Heartbeat Chapter 30 is live!
Please enjoy this new chapter of my YOI novelisation!
Summary:
They stared at each other, Yuuri clutching a fistful of T-shirt, Viktor with his fingers hooked in Yuuri’s waistband still wearing that predatory gaze of his. “Stalemate?” Viktor breathed. Something in Yuuri hardened. “No.” Viktor pays off his debt and the start of the Grand Prix Series casts its shadow over Yuuri, and things spiral out of control...

Special thanks goes to my dear friend and Thousand Spotlights beta @cecebeanie for doing a sensitivity reading of chapters 30ff and for bearing with me and all my stupid questions I had so far and for all the stupid questions I'm going to ask in the future ❤️
Tumblr media
Excerpt:
“Thanks for helping, Yuuri,” Nishigori said. “Resurfacing is done much faster in pairs.”
“I’m happy to help,” Yuuri replied, huddling in his hoodie. “Besides, I believe that Viktor will become impatient if we keep him waiting.”
They were leaning against the barrier next to each other, watching the thin sheet of warm water freeze on the ice. Behind the windows, the sky was pitch black and rain pattered softly against the glass. Practice had been a disaster. When Yuuri was not struggling with the quad Salchow, it was the quad toe he was botching up. And he only had two weeks left until he would skate at his first major competition of the season.
For the rest of the evening, however, Yuuri tried to push all thoughts of the Grand Prix Series aside. Tonight, Viktor would honour his pledge from the silly bet they had made five days ago.
“Having your boyfriend skate for you is quite an unusual venture for a Saturday night,” Nishigori said.
Heat accumulated in Yuuri’s cheeks, ousting the cold. “He lost a bet and he insisted he needed to prepare for it. And he’s not my boyfriend.”
His childhood friend shot him a side glance. “Didn’t you two go on a date lately? I swear I saw you holding hands the other day.”
“Oh,” Yuuri said, fighting the urge to press his face into the ice to cool the burn. “That’s true. Viktor and I are dating. But our relationship has many layers.”
Nishigori slapped him on the back. “The only thing that counts is that you are comfortable with it.”
Yuuri opened his mouth to reply just as a familiar voice behind them chimed, “Well, I feel comfortably warmed-up now.”

This is a bit of an awkward writing update, but I can't change that right now and I don't feel like holding back just because.
Since I've been upset about too many things over the past week, I fled into the only one of my two current wips, I can write comfortably even when I can't write continuously. And that's where things become awkward because I'm talking about no other project than my Young Vitya coming-of-age/coming-out story (working title: The Sorrows of Young Vitya) that suddenly got the taste of a movie substitute.
Back in January, when I had the idea, I didn't think of movies at all. I just suddenly had this story in mind that connected all the backstory I made up for Vitya in my YOI novelisation, one-and-a-half draft of sequels, and my Viktor-POV prequel Thousand Spotlights. That my ideas might collide with a possible future canon was an afterthought that only occurred to me when I started writing the story during my Easter holiday. Although that had been a possibility I've been dealing since I started writing YOI fanfiction, it was still awkward. And I decided that I could impossibly wait for a movie that had the vibes of a Schrödinger's movie, especially when there's a real chance that I end up disliking the canon extension (been there, done that, wrote fix-it fix countless times and all this happened often enough to be wary of these things, no offence against the creators, I'm a burnt child).
This weekend, I've finished another chapter in which I made up a hilarious explanation for the bondage Lilac Fairy costume, which is total nuts because 14-year-old Vitya is total nuts. He's constantly pushing boundaries of what can do with his skating (both in technicality and expression), he has very distinct ideas how he wants his programmes to be like, he's gay as fuck but hilariously oblivious to it, he wants to overthrow the system, and he's constantly picking fights with Yakov. And this will continue throughout puberty at least. It's such a fun story to write, but I have absolutely no idea what to do with it. I had resorted to very likely not posting it once it's done, given my experience with Thousand Spotlights so far. But I've never made a secret out of writing it because the idea thrilled me so much and I can do so much terrific research on a culture and an era I know very little of and bend it towards the utopia that is YOI. And I don't really like the idea of people putting any expectations in this project even if that will only concern a small number of fans since my writing updates tend to reach only so many people.
I will finish the draft and I will revise it properly before I make a decision. My plan is to finish the first draft during my next holiday. I love my annoying pubescent Vitya too much to not finish this story and it's too important as a backstory for the Viktor of my "A dream too large to bear alone"-verse. So please bear with me and more updates of this kind.

I'm currently including the comments from my beta in "Can You Hear My Heartbeat" and I just came across the scene from ep. 4 in which Yuuri wakes Viktor up to show him the music for his free programme and I'm laughing so hard right now because I totally forgot how that scene ends in my fic:
“So, you like it?”
“It’s a beautiful piece, Yuuri. Tomorrow, we’ll start choreographing it.”
We! He said we! Can I actually do this? “Th-thank you,” Yuuri spluttered.
“I’ll think of something until then. And now, please get off me, Yuuri.”
“Huh?”
An awkward silence passed in which they stared at each other. Under Viktor’s gaze, Yuuri gradually felt more foolish. They were so close that Yuuri’s skin warmed under the heat Viktor radiated. He smelled like summer meadows after the rain. Yuuri wanted to reach out to trace a finger along Viktor’s collarbone, down to his sternum, which seemed to emit a very potent version of his fragrance, and map the veins of those well-muscled arms. His hair had felt so soft and so silken when Yuuri had touched it at the rink! Would his skin feel soft, too?
“Yuuri!”
Hands closed around his wrists.
“I like the feeling of you sitting on my lap, but you really should get off me now.”
What? In his excitement, Yuuri had paid no attention to his seat. But the hard object below the blanket just under him certainly was not a flashlight. He shrieked and jumped off the bed.
“Sorry!”
“Never mind.” Viktor rolled to the side, a smile of bemusement on his lips. “Sweet dreams, Yuuri.”
“You, too,” Yuuri blurted. Then, realising what he had just implied, he fled the room.
How was he supposed to find sleep after this?
Read the first 25 chapters of the unbeta'ed version here.
Edit: I apologise for the earlier spelling "mistakes"! In my Word documents, I contract the double consonant of Yuuri's name to Yūri because it looks more natural to me. Sometimes, I forget to change this when I post snippets. Technically, that's not wrong, but I know that no one in this fandom spells his name this way.
