Welcome to Nowhere...
Tumblr media
Summary: Based off the prompt I snagged from @writing-prompt-s: You run a café on the edge of life and death. Souls who have been departed from their bodies temporarily, such as in comas or near-death experiences, can relax in your quaint cafe for as long as they need before they can either return to their bodies or begin their journey to the afterlife.
CW/TW: mentions of death/near death experiences, mentions of blood and broken bones. Swearing.
Word count: 1.7k
A/n: I've never written anything before, so please bear with me and be kind 😭
"Welcome to Nowhere!" is heard as a few new faces float in around the cafe's doors. A jingle of the bell atop the door sounds as the door closes behind the young man as he enters. The cafe is surprisingly bigger inside compared to its smaller seeming exterior. He mulls to himself while wondering where he is and why he is suddenly in a cafe. As if pulled by some kind of mystical gravitation, the man queues himself in the line. As a young waitress comes around to check on a table she just served coffee to, you look up from the register to greet the newest arrival.
"Welcome to Nowhere. My name is Y/n! What can I get started for you?" You say with a smile.
"Huh?" He says. The poor blonde looks confused, You think. "Where the fuck am I?" You respond, still smiling,
"You're at Nowhere. It's okay. This happens alot. Would you like something to ease your mind while you decide?" He frowns.
"The fuck do you mean this happens alot? Where the fuck am I?" You quickly glance past him to make sure he's the only one in line before answering.
"As I've already explained, Mr. Bakugo, you're in Nowhere. I'd be happy to give you something to ease your mind while you make a decision and offer you a seat, or I can get you something to go so you can continue your journey. You're free to gloss over our menu items in the meantime." You extend a menu out for him to take, which he does, snatching it away from you. "How the hell do you know my name?" He scowls as he scans over the menu.
"I know everyone who sets foot in my doors, Mr. Bakugo. Or do you prefer Lord Explosion Murder God Dynamight?" You say with a small smirk. His scowl deepens. "Bakugo's fine." He replies gruffly "an' a medium black coffee."
"Sure thing!" You chirp. "Will you be deciding or continuing your journey?"
"The fuck's that mean?" He snaps. You chuckle softly.
"Newbie. I forgot. Will you, as the humans say, be dining in, or is this to go?" Bakugo looks at you quizzically before answering. "Dinin' in or decidin', whatever the fuck ya said."
"Alright then. Just find a place, and I'll have it right out." Bakugo stalks over to the nearest empty seat and plops down as he waits for you to make his drink.
You come over a few minutes later and gingerly set the mug down in front of the hulking man. "Here you are, Mr. Bakugo. Is there anything else I can get you? A snack? A meal? Advice?" You glance over his face noting how handsome he is with his chiseled jaw peppered with light stubble, only to be met with his piercing red stare that shook you from your thoughts.
"Oi, dumbass-" "Y/n." you interrupted. "Whatever," He scowls, making frown lines prominent on his otherwise pretty face. "I asked ya if you could tell me what I'm doin' here." You glance back at Chiyoko who is now at the register greeting some new guests before sitting down across from the stoic man.
"As I've stated before, you are in Nowhere. Many peoples and cultures call us by different names- Purgatory, Limbo, etc. I just call it Nowhere because it is exactly where you are." Bakugo looks over your lithe frame skeptically while he takes a sip of his coffee. “Uh huh…”
“Nowhere is the place Souls come when they are temporarily misplaced whether it's astral projection,a trance, a coma, or a brush with death, well, Shinigami in your case.” You continue as his fingers tighten their grip on the opaque mug.
“She was quite upset that the Number One hero got caught in her crosshairs. However, she granted mercy as Midoriya and Kirishima were able to get you medical help in time.”
Bakugo slams his mug down in frustration, nearly breaking it. “Oi, ya mean to tell me Shitty Hair and the fuckin' Nerd saved my ass?! I'm the Number One hero! I’m supposed to do the savin', not be the one saved like a fuckin' damsel in distress!”
You simply shrug. “I’m just telling you what I know.” Bakugo stills for the first time since his arrival. “....How do I leave…?” You can hear the uncertainty in his voice at the prospect of not returning home.
“Simple, you make a choice. Do you want to go back to living as the Number One hero or would you rather cement your legacy as the Number One hero and move on? Should you wish to return to the Above, take the front door back out to continue deciding. If you wish to move onto Infinity, take the door off to the side to continue your journey.”
“Y/n! You’re needed at the counter!” Chiyoko calls out as she rushes past the pair of you, behind Bakugo, carrying a tray of various coffees.
You nod at her then look back at Bakugo. “Take all the time you need. Call me if you need me or you’ve made a decision.” You walk away, greeting the newest addition into the cafe.
Bakugo stares into the almost empty mug, deliberating his choices. Do I wanna go back to being Number One? I love being the best, but I miss my dad. If I stay here, I could see my old man. What about Deku and Kiri? Would they be okay if I'm gone? He gets startled from his thoughts, and with clenched fists prepared to swing, he looks over at the supposed aggressor when his eyes widen like saucers.
“AllMight?”
“Hello young Bakugo. Well, I suppose you’re an adult now, aren’t you?” He claps a large hand on Bakugo’s shoulder, making the blonde feel sixteen again.
“Why-How…What the fuck?” He asks bewildered. AllMight laughs heartily.
“It’s a little difficult to explain, however, I am glad to see you as well, young Bakugo.” AllMight sits on the seat to the right of Bakugo. “How is life back home?” Home.
“Still full of villains but I kick their asses. I surpassed you as Number One like I fuckin’ said I would. You and the shitty Nerd.” AllMight shakes his head with the laugh crinkling the corners of his eyes.
“Wouldn’t expect anything less form you, young Bakugo. How is young Midoriya and the others?” He shrugs as Chiyoko swings by with a pot of coffee for his refill.
“Izuku’s fine. Happily married with a brat on the way. Ei and I started our own agency. Blew IcyHot’s out the fuckin’ water. Won a bunch of awards and shit.” He says with a smirk making AllMight grin with fondness for the pro hero.
“I am proud of you. Proud of all of you.”
Bakugo and AllMight talk for what seems like hours about different topics in the young hero’s life. “How the hell are ya even here? Aren’t ya s’posed to be in Paradise or some shit?”
“I help Y/n with the Souls that arrive to Nowhere. It’s easier for some if they see a familiar face like the Symbol of Peace.” Bakugo grunts in understanding as he takes a swig of the steaming roast. “So,” AllMight begins, “have you chosen if you are deciding or if you are going to continue here?”
Bakugo pauses for a second. “I have.” AllMight stands giving a smile.
“I’m glad you made the right choice for you. You have become a remarkable hero, young Bakugo. I am proud of you.” He pulls Bakugo into a hug. “I’ll be on my way to be a Symbol of Peace for another. Goodbye, young Katsuki.”
“See you around, AllMight.” Bakugo stands from his seat and heads toward you at the counter to pay for his coffee.
“No need. It’s on the house.” You say with a wink. “‘S a shitty business practice, Spooks.”
“Spooks?” You look puzzled at the nickname. “Spooks. Ya look like a damn ghost.” You chuckle and it makes the corner of Bakugo’s mouth quirk upwards. He walks towards the door. “Safe travels, Bakugo.”
“Katsuki. Call me Katsuki.” You smile at him.
“Safe travels, Katsuki.” The chime of the doorbell cries out.
~~~~~
“Call the doctor! He’s waking up!” Doctors and nurses scramble around checking on the pro hero. A week has gone by since Bakugo woke up, and Kirishima filled him in on his condition. During the battle with a villain with a liquid nitrogen gauntlet quirk, the building Bakugo was launched in had a fault in the foundation, causing the building he was in to rapidly collapse.
“You been in a coma for 2 weeks. Ya got caught in the fallin’ debris when the bastard hit you with his quirk one last time. Midoriya was the one to find and dig ya out while I arrest the villain. Doc said you’d broke yer leg, a few ribs, collapsed a lung, an’ damn near shattered your left arm completely. Luckily, they were able to save it but ya might have trouble using your quirk in that hand.”
Rubbing his uninjured hand over his face as he takes in the news, Bakugo sighs. “Fuck. How long am I out?”
“Doc said a few months. Commission said they’ll handle medical expenses since yer injuries are extensive and the faulty building was their fault.” Kirishima comments. A buzz of the phone in his pocket pulls Kirishima away from his conversation. “Gotta go. Time for my shift on patrol. I’ll swing back by with katsudon later, k?” He waves as he leaves.
Bakugo carefully turns up the volume on the news with his uninjured hand to continue watching the news footage of the attack. Film footage of the attack showed the building collapsing on the outside, then cutting to Deku carrying a mangled and bloodied Dynamight out of the building and placing him quickly into an ambulance that was on standby.
Breaking News! Pro Hero Dynamight, who was in critical condition, woke up from his two week coma. After fighting the notorious villain, CryoStone, Pro Hero Dynamight was caught in the rubble of a collapsing building. Reporter Hatsumi Saisei is on the scene. Hatsumi Saisei reports,”Here we are outside of Central Hospital where we just received confirmation that Dynamight has woken up from his coma. Sources say that he has sustained substantial injuries and will be taking leave for an extensive recovery period. From all of us in Tokyo, and Juzo News, Dynamite, we wish you a speedy and healthy recovery.”
~~~~
Months later, a jingle of the bell atop the door sounds as the door closes.
"Katsuki, Welcome to Nowhere!"

Febuwhump Day 4 - “I can’t lose you too” (Alt Prompt 2)
@febuwhump
Part 1 // Part 2
Sheila was working when the call came through, her phone buzzing uselessly in her locker.  By the time her break came round, it was a long while later, her battery nearly dead and several missed calls from a number she didn’t recognise. Food in the microwave, she perched against the bench and pressed play.
“Sheila? Sheila ‘m sorry. They asked me who I wanted to call an’ -and I didn’t know who else. ‘m really scared and I’m in hospital and you always said I could call.” Her heart sank, fear taking over. “I’m sorry. I lost my phone an’ I couldn’t remember your number. I don’t even know if this is your number still. I fucked up and I’m sorry. You an’ Fred were the best family an’ you did so much for me an-and I’ve done this. I didn’t have time to do anything and then I was here. You were a mum to me, and Fred was the best … best dad I had...I’m sorry. I don’t wanna be alone, Sheila. I know you’re busy and you’ve probably forgotten me and I’m sorry, I’m just scared.”
The beep sounded and she didn’t move. She couldn’t breathe. It had been a few months since she’d heard from him, and even then it was just a passing text to tell her happy birthday. He was still her child, one of her first fosters, and still family. He sounded in a bad way and she could hear the flurry of activity in the hospital around the panic in his voice. It took no time to make her mind up, briefly telling a colleague she was going before disappearing, her lunch still in the microwave.
She tried Fred on the way, to no avail, leaving him a slightly more composed voicemail than had been left on hers. The hospital was no luck either, stuck on hold until the dialing rang out.
The car was left abandoned in the carpark as she rushed through to the ED, pushing past the queue at the desk. “Hi, sorry, my son was brought in earlier - Jason Hardy - I got a phone call from him.”
“Just a second ma’am, there’s a queue.”
“Yeah, it’ll take two seconds. Jason Hardy. Can you tell me where he is?”
With an irritated sigh, the receptionist tapped away on the computer, face falling slightly. “I’m just going to get a nurse.”
Sheila knew it was bad, she’d heard the panic and desperation in his voice, and seeing the look on the receptionist’s face...it only made it worse.
A nurse arrived to greet Sheila quite quickly, a forced smile on her face. “Sheila Daniels?”
“Is he still alive?”
“He is. He’s in a bad way, but he’s alive. We’re gonna take you through now.”
She followed her through. “How bad is he? I got the phone call…”
“It’s touch and go, I’m afraid.”
She swallowed thickly. “What happened?”
“There was a car accident.”
“No.”
“I’m afraid so.”
“But he’s going to be okay, right?”
“We’re doing our best.”
She knew what that meant. “So, no.”
“You know we can’t make any promises. But we’re doing our absolute best to give him the best shot.”
“I’ve been through it before with my other two. You don’t need to lie to me.”
“I'm not lying to you, I promise. We're doing our best for him.”
"I don't doubt you are, but I know what it means, when you say that. The look you all have…"
“I’m sorry. It’s a difficult situation.”
"He was one of my first fosters." Sheila said quietly. "Stayed with me a long while, and then would come and stay for reprieve occasionally."
“That’s very admirable of you. Foster parents are such a lifeline. I’m sure he’ll appreciate you being here.” The nurse said, letting herself into the ICU.
"He said he couldn't remember my number. I should have been here."
“You’re here now, that’s what counts. No use dwelling on the ‘should haves’.”
She shook her head. "That doesn't make it better."
“I know it’s difficult, but we can’t change the past. You’re here now, and he’ll appreciate you being here.”
Sheila hesitated. "How bad is he?"
“Critical, but he’s been improving gradually.”
"Surgery?"
“Hopefully later, if he’s stable enough.”
"If."
“With the way things are going, he’ll be in surgery later this afternoon. But it’s the surgeon’s decision when they see him.”
She nodded. "Okay. Thank you."
“His bed is just down here.” She said, leading her down the ward.
Sheila thanked her again, stood outside Jason's bay. He'd grown since she'd last seen him, a beard growing on his face and his blond hair a mess. She couldn't help but frown; it was parted wrong, and he'd always hated that.
"Jason?" She took his hand. "I'm sorry it took so long, but I'm here now. I've got you, yeah?"
The nurses gave Sheila as much space as they could, giving her time to sit with her old foster. He was in and out of consciousness, and definitely very, very poorly, but there was no doubt he knew she was there. His obs even improved a little.
She sorted his hair, adjusted the specs on his nose, and then waited. She'd get the occasional response from him as she chatted away, promising him they'd have a room for him to get him back on his feet.
After a while, the surgeon arrived, startled by Sheila in the bay. “Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't think there was family with him.”
"I've not long been here, sorry."
“Well, I'm glad he has someone. I'm Dr Knight, one of the senior surgical registrars on his case. I'm happy to have a chat with you?”
She nodded. "Do you need to go somewhere else? Or can we stay here?"
“No, absolutely fine to stay here.” He said, taking a seat. “Are you his mother?”
"Uh, I guess. I was his foster mum for a long, long time."
“Well, that's good enough in my books. Unfortunately, as I'm sure you've been told already, he's very unwell. We've been trying to get him stable enough for surgery for a while now, I've just come to do some final checks before we make our decision.”
"If you don't take him to surgery, what's the prognosis?"
“Not good, I'm afraid. He had a procedure after he was admitted to control his internal bleeding, but unfortunately it's not worked as well as we'd hoped it would. He's very weak.”
"And if you wait a few days, let him get some strength up?"
“We think it's more likely he'll deteriorate in that time. We have a small window of opportunity here.”
"And this surgery, how...how likely is it to succeed?" She barely dared to ask.
“It's a hail mary, I'm afraid. But it's better than doing nothing. His best shot at recovery.” He reached out to rest a hand on her knee in what he hoped was a comforting gesture. “I understand this is incredibly difficult to hear. This isn't a decision we're taking lightly. But he's young and he deserves the best possible chance, even if the odds are slim.”
She shook her head. "It isn't fair on him."
“You don't agree with our decision to do this surgery?”
"Oh, no, no. Not that. All of this. He shouldn't be here. He was meant to have his life sorted and be living. Not stuck in limbo." She sniffed, trying to stop the tears.
“Ah. I understand this is upsetting - nobody deserves to be in this situation. We're going to do our absolute best for him. We have been doing our absolute best for him from the start. None of us would be considering this surgery if we didn't believe it was in his best interests.” He handed her a tissue, neatly folded in his pocket. “I know I said we have a window of opportunity, but there's time for you to spend with him now. We're not going to rush in just yet.”
"If he needs it, if it's his best chance, then he should go now though, right? So he can come out sooner, and start to recover?"
“We still have some preparations to do first. I'm just here to assess his condition. He seems to have improved since you've arrived.” He said gently. “We'll take him as soon as we're ready for him. But I just wanted to make sure you knew that you have time to spend with him now.”
She forced a smile. "Thank you. For everything."
“Not a problem. I know how difficult this is. Please don't hesitate to grab the nurses if you need anything at all. Can I get someone to bring you food? Something to drink?”
"No, thank you. I'm okay. I'll just stay with him for the time being."
He nodded. “That's absolutely fine. But we can provide you with food, tea, anything. This is probably harder for you than it is for him.”
"Yeah. He'd tell me off for crying, sorry. It was just a bit of a shock."
“Of course, of course. Don't apologise, please. In your position I'd be a sobbing mess.”
"I've had a bit of practice over the years." She laughed slightly. "Normally always the boys, too."
“Other fosters?”
She nodded. "Quite a few. Some of the scraps they'd get themselves into...I'm just being a pain, don't let me keep you."
“Not a pain in the slightest. I just need to do a few checks, yeah?”
"Go ahead. Don't let me get in the way."
He nodded and stood up, though rested a gentle hand on her shoulder before he moved to check Jason over. Thankfully he had improved, and he was happy they were making the right decision.
“I ought to go now, and make sure things are being sorted. But you're more than welcome to ask the nurses for me, or any of his team. We'd be happy to come down and speak with you again if you need.”
"Thank you." She glanced at him with a small smile before turning back to face Jason. He was her priority.
The surgeon left her alone again, save for the occasional nurse popping in to check on him. She apologised again, in his brief moment of consciousness, smoothing his hair back down. Fred still didn’t answer his phone, leaving her alone, dealing with the mess herself.
They gave Sheila as much time as they could. It wasn't ideal, but she needed all the time she could get. Eventually they had no choice, though, and they had to go ahead with the surgery. They sent in a nurse with a porter, as much as Chris wanted to be there, he couldn't. He had too much to do.
Sheila held her tears in as she said her goodbyes, promising him she’d be there when he came round. She held his hand as long as she could, pressing a kiss to his forehead as she was forced to leave.
“I love you, yeah? It won’t be long and then it’ll be okay. I love you.”
They took him after that, the nurse sending Sheila a sad smile.
The surgery was difficult, and unfortunately it didn't get easier as they went on. He was just too unstable, they couldn't do what they wanted to do. They were thwarted by low blood pressure and arrests looming before the inevitable occurred. They tried and tried, but his body just wasn't strong enough. They had to call it a day, in the end. It wasn't fair to try and keep going when his body had had enough.
It was Fao who called time of death, and so it was him who took the responsibility of speaking to next of kin. He headed out of theatres, heart heavy, and round to the relatives room to find them.
He couldn't help the way his heart dropped when he saw who was sitting waiting. Sheila. He stumbled slightly, pain flaring in his knee, and he forced himself to keep going.
“I'm looking for family of Jason Hardy?” He said, trying his best to stay sounding professional.
Sheila raised her head, she knew that voice, knew that tone. "No."
He cleared his throat. “Would you mind coming with me?”
"Fao this isn't real, he's still okay, right? You just had to stop it early for a different reason."
“I'm sorry. Come with me? We can go somewhere quiet to talk.”
She swallowed thickly, standing on shaking legs. It was all just a dream. He was fine, he had to be.
He led her into a small, private room, shutting the door quietly behind him. He took a deep breath, and sat down opposite her.
“We did our very best. We made some good progress, but unfortunately he was just too weak. Despite our best efforts to try and stabilise him, he went into cardiac arrest. We tried for some time to resuscitate him, but unfortunately we were,” he paused to clear his throat, “unfortunately we were unsuccessful. He passed away. I'm so sorry.”
She already knew, could tell from the look on his face, the tone in his voice. It was still something else to be told it outright, and worse further that it was her own son telling her. She wrapped her arms around herself, forcing herself to breathe past the lump in her throat.
Fao cleared his throat again. “I know this is difficult to hear, and I'm sorry I don't have better news for you. I assure you that we did everything we could for him.”
"Are you sure it was him?" Her voice cracked.
“I’m sure. I’m so sorry for your loss.”
"You're lying."
“I know this is difficult to process. I promise you, I’ve told you the truth.”
“You’re wrong. You’re lying. You’re wrong.”
“I understand this is hard to hear. If you’d like, you’re welcome to go and see him?”
“You don’t understand.” She frowned at him. “You don’t understand anything.”
“Can you help me understand? I’m willing to explain everything, if that would help?”
“He’s gone.”
“I’m afraid so.”
She shook her head. “He’s gone.”
“I can assure you, he wasn’t in any pain.”
“But he was.”
“We did our best to keep his pain well managed.”
“He was in pain and terrified.”
Fao swallowed thickly. “My colleagues did our best to reassure him and ensure his pain was well controlled. He was under anaesthesia, I can assure you he wouldn’t have been in pain when he passed.”
“You didn’t hear the voicemail.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t. If you want to take the matter further, I can give you the number for the hospital PALS department? But I can assure you we did our best to make him comfortable.”
"You don't mean any of that." She frowned at him. "You're just reading off a script. You don't care."
“I care about every patient I treat.” His voice wobbled. “I did everything I could for him, as did my colleagues.” He forced himself to take another deep breath. “I know I’m not the person you want giving you this news. But I would never do any procedure if I didn’t think it was in the patient’s best interests. I wouldn’t have suggested this option for Jason if I didn’t think he could benefit from it.”
Sheila rubbed her eyes, trying to wipe away the tears. The wobble in Fao's voice broke her and she reached out for him.
He handed her a tissue. “Here, it’s alright. I know this is hard to hear.” He said, moving closer to her.
She pushed the tissue away, choosing instead to grab onto Fao and pull him close. Her fingers tightened around his scrubs and she buried her face in Fao's shoulder.
Instinctively he held her close, rubbing her back. “It’s alright. I know this is hard, I know. It’s okay.”
“He’s gone.”
“I’m sorry, he’s gone.”
Her legs buckled as she sobbed, the pain completely overtaking her.
“It’s alright, I’ve got you.” He soothed.
She gripped onto him tighter. “I should have been there for him.”
“You were. You were right there with him. Chris and the nurses said the whole time you were there, his obs improved.”
“But he didn’t make it.”
“His odds were slim the minute he came through our doors. We all knew that - he knew that. We gave it our best shot, but…” Fao had to clear his throat again, “but his body told us that he’d had enough. Sometimes despite everything, there’s nothing more we can do.”
She was quiet a moment. “I’m glad it was you.”
“If I’d have known…”
“But I know you’d have done everything.”
“Of course. We all did.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m sorry there wasn’t a better outcome.”
“Can I see him?”
“Of course.”
“Can...Can you stay with me?”
“Absolutely.”
“Fred wouldn’t answer and I dont know what Finn’s up to.” She sniffed. “They need to know..”
“Do you want me to try Fred?”
Sheila nodded. “Please.”
“Alright. Can I get you anything? Tea? Water?” He offered, digging in his pockets for his phone.
“Just you.”
“I’m right here. Not going anywhere.” He said, finding his phone and quickly calling Fred.
She leant into him, tears still falling and her chest aching. She couldn't quite believe it, he was gone and there was nothing she could do.
“It’s alright, it’s okay.” He murmured gently, praying Fred picked up the phone.
The phone rang through, like it had so many times with Sheila. She shook her head as she heard the voicemail, pressing closer to Fao. Deep down, she knew that she should be there for him, not the other way around. He shouldn't be having to tell her that her son was dead.
“I bet he’s left it somewhere.” Fao said, trying to make his tone light. “You know what he’s like. Come on, why don’t we go and get some fresh air? And then I can take you to see Jason when they’re ready.”
"You're still working."
“I’d say I was due a break, wouldn’t you?”
She nodded with a shaky breath. "Okay."
He stood, and offered her his hand. “Here.”
“Thanks.” She took it, gripping him tight. “I’m sorry.”
“God, why are you sorry?”
“You had to work on him.” Her voice cracked and wobbled. “I know that’s hard.”
“I didn’t know him, Mum. I didn’t even know you were here.”
“I know you beat yourself up over these things.”
He hummed. “We all did our best. I’m sorry there wasn’t a better outcome.”
She bit her lip to stop her sob, bringing a hand up to cover her mouth. The grief was overwhelming, stirring up so many more unwanted emotions.
“Hey, it’s alright.”
She shook her head, dropping Fao’s hand in favor of hugging him. “Promise me you won’t leave.”
“I’m not going anywhere, máthair. Promise.”
“I can’t lose you too.”
Fao made a noise in the back of his throat. “I’m here. You’re not going to lose me.”
She pulled back to look at him, tears flooding her face. “I can’t lose you. You’re my son.”
Fao pressed a kiss to her cheek. “I’m not going anywhere. I love you, yeah?”

ABTV Feb 25 Transcript
A complete transcript of the ABTV Voltron interview with Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery on February 25 2019 is under the cut.
@crystal-rebellion @voltronisruiningmylife @felixazrael @leakinghate
KC: The series is over, but we’re not quite done. We are the Afterbuzz TV Voltron: Legendary Defender after-show and we’re here to talk to you guys about season 8 as a whole. We’re gonna talk about character arcs. We’re gonna talk about the end of reality. We’re going to talk about some of our favorite moments, and we’re gonna talk about them with two very special guests. So let’s get this ball rolling and team, it’s time to form Voltron!
KC: Hello, everyone! Welcome back. We are the Afterbuzz TV Voltron: Legendary Defender after-show. This is the season 8 review. We are gonna talk about season 8 as a whole. We are going to have a grand old time doing it. I have with me a green lion, Megan Salinas.
MS: Hey, everybody!
KC: I’m black lion, Katie Cullen, and we have two wonderful, fantastic, returning guests that we are so thrilled to have in studio. Our showrunners: Lauren Montgomery and Joaquim dos Santos.
JDS: How’s it going?
MS: [cheers off-screen]
JDS: It’s nice to see you guys.
LM: Yeah, thanks for having us. We’re happy to be back and talking about the final season.
JDS: Yeah, and we have to sort of give a pre-warning that we haven’t really watched it in a while, so we aren’t really sure what season 8 is anymore.
LM: Yeah, I did, I refreshed myself on the, uh, episode thumbnails on Netflix, so at least I have like, a slight reminder.
JDS: Yeah and they spoil everything for you.
KC: No, just me.
[laughter]
KC: Things I will never be over: when Netflix marketing screws up that bad. Well, welcome back. Before we get started we are gonna do a little bit of housekeeping. As always, we have the livechat going for those of you who are watching live on YouTube. We have the hashtag for those of you who are watching live or listening later. That hashtag is #ABTVVoltron. If you’ve got something to say, throw it in the hashtag, throw it in the live chat, you may well get a shoutout. I will say that we do check the hashtag throughout the week, and it lasts longer than the livechat does, so art, links, fun stuff, throw it in there if you want it to be a little more permanent. And as always, we have our tavern of lions house rule: be nice or get out. We--[laser sound effect]--there we go. Yeah. Everyone has opinions. I firmly believe you can express your opinions in a respectful manner and if you find yourself unable to do that, you will be banned from the channel. No more Afterbuzz animation for you. Buh-bye. Most of you have been pretty dang good at that, which I appreciate. Keep it up and we’ll continue. Season 8, though, you guys.
MS: Oh my goodness.
KC: The series finale. What was releasing this last season like for you?
LM: It was…
JDS: Exhausting.
LM: Yeah. Releasing it was really easy because we were, like, out of, you know--
MS: It’s done!
LM: --out of work for, like, a month and we were like, [noncommittal noises]. We were relaxing, we were kind of like--things were nice and slow. Making it was a whole different scenario. This was where we really procrastinated a lot on a few things, like, we thought we had this beautiful idea that we’d have all this time at the end where there’s no new episodes coming up that we’d have to make and like, we’ll have all this time to, like, reboard all these things that needed to be reboarded and focus all this attention. And we had none of that time, and I don’t even know how that happened. I think what we forgot to realize was doing our regular producer duties takes the whole day, and the end of the day was when we did all of our storyboard stuff.
JDS: I think, I don’t know how the math worked in our head, but I think we assumed that, like, as soon as season 7 was done, we reverted back to being, like, storyboard artists or something, and then we’d just be like, “yeah, we’ll just, like, draw and stuff again.”
LM: Yeah, we’ll have all this time to just, like, make the finale the best it can be. Like, I remember us talking with Eugene, like, “Oh my god, Jean. Eugene, when we’re done with, like, this last batch of episodes can you imagine how much time.” And he’s like, “Yeah, it’s gonna be so great!” And then, like, there was none of that because we were still making the frickin’ show and finishing, like, episodes just in editing and in post.
JDS: Balancing act was still happening, you know, like three spinning plates at a time.
LM: One day, I’m gonna figure it out.
KC: Sending it in at 11:59 before it’s due.
JDS: We’re gonna be, like, 80-year-olds like, “We figured it out!” And they’re gonna be like, “What’s this crazy old person doing here trying to make a cartoon?”
KC: That’s what we’re all trying to do collectively. We’re making a cartoon.
JDS: That’s right.
KC: So you had a lot of story threads to bring together and resolve as well as a lot of new information to give us. Was there… was there anything that got lost in the shuffle? Was there anything you would have liked to emphasize a little more that there just wasn’t time for it?
JDS: A lot, I mean yeah. It-it’s tough. We had this massive Honerva backstory to sort of really set up and queue up, and-and we were able to do that a little bit, sort of, leading up, but season 8 was really our big push to-to get that all set up. I think, you know, that came at the cost of, like, I would have loved to have spent more time with the MFE pilots and sort of figure out what made them tick. And we got a little bit of that with, you know, like, “Day 47”, but…
LM: Yeah.
JDS: I don’t know. There was stuff like that, like incidental side characters that we just were-we were super fond of.
LM: Yeah, it’s one of those really tricky things about having a show this big. As you introduce all these characters, and we had all these great ideas of, like, they’re all gonna come into play in these many different ways. And-and so you would be, kind of, in the writers’ room with the writers, like, talking about all these things. And then slowly but surely as we needed to just kind of whittle it down and make it understandable and get the strongest points across, like, these little things would fall away and so suddenly you’d lose that-that kind of side character involvement. Like, we had this idea of, like, Slav was gonna kind of be, like, with them and figuring out all of these, like, crazy interreality traveling stuff and like he would know all the realities, he would know exactly where to go, he’ll be in the cockpit with them--
JDS: Right, right, right.
LM: --it’s gonna be crazy. And then we were like, “Oh, no. We need to just, like--do we really need Slav in the finale? Like--
KC: Yes you do.
LM: --with all the paladins? Like, we love him, but that might be a little awkward. So, uh, yeah. And honestly, just, like, the finale itself, just that last episode, like, we’ve always…
JDS: Yeah.
LM: With every finale we’ve done, um, in-in our three, like, big seasons, we--you know, Zarkon we consider to be one season, Lotor is the second season, and then this big, like, Sendak Earth/Honerva arc--each of those had a big finale and every time we would write that big finale and we would run out of time. Like, we would overwrite it and I would always try to say, like, “Guys, we need, like, at least an act of wrap-up.” And then for the big series finale, like, it would have been awesome to have an entire episode where we could just dedicate to, like, tying up loose ends, but you can’t do that. We-we wrote an episode and then we got notes like, “Hey, there’s only action in act 1, can we have action in act 2 and 3?” And we’re like, “No! No we can’t!” Like, like, we gotta wrap up 78 episodes! This isn’t just a, uh, a 26 episode wrap-up. This is a 78 episode wrap-up.
JDS: But when you-when you look at that final episode, it really is just the first act of, like, fight stuff and the rest is pretty much wrap-up. Uh, I mean, we were just saying to each other, we wished that the conversation in limbo almost could have had its own episode. How awesome would that have been to really, like, explore, deep-dive into Honerva’s POV and make that transition when she, you know, sort of decides to go along with Allura. Sell that. Uh, but, you sort of deal--
LM: It was--there’s a ton of stuff that just hit the-hit the, kinda, cutting room floor, storyboard-wise, just because we didn’t have the time and so we’re looking like, it’s a kids’ show technically still, even though we’re trying to make it more than that. You have a-a scene that’s basically an act long that’s just in a white floaty space with people talking about, like, you know--
JDS: Bigger emotional stuff
LM: Yeah. And, uh, you know, letting that go any longer than that is just like, “You can’t do it!”
KC: Yeah.
LM: “Kids are sleeping right now!”
JDS: No it’s, what’s interesting, though, is that it seems like we’re in a--I don’t know--sort of social situation now where those types of shows are becoming more and more of a reality. And we were on this, like, weird precipice where we were always working on shows that were pushing the boundaries, and maybe Voltron was on the tipping point. It seems like now animation is way--it’s broadening, like, every day, so hopefully we’ll be able to see more shows that can, like, lean in and get really, really character-centric and still have all the sci-fi, like, big action stuff to go along with it. Um,
LM: I was telling Joaquim how, you know, we were just talking about how during our time on Voltron we-we started in a very specific point in the industry where we were very used to working inside of our boys toys animation box and trying to push the boundaries. And those were literally the only jobs that were available to us because those were the only shows that studios had in animation and during our time on Voltron, like Castlevania came out and changed the landscape and now suddenly there’s all these studios. Netflix opened its own studio here. We were making a show through DreamWorks for Netflix and now, you know, we could have just gone straight to Netflix and made a show that was more geared towards, like, young adults and-and more, but that wasn’t available to us when we started.
JDS: We were, like, trying to, like, like, sneak it in the back door like “this is secretly a much deeper show, everybody.”
LM: But it’s exciting that--because that’s--it’s a reality that we didn’t know if it would ever be a thing because we were working on Korra and we would say to ourselves, like, “This is the last time we’re ever gonna get this chance, you guys.” Like, Korra is, like, a crazy creature where Nickelodeon knows they’re not making it for kids, it has no toy tie-in, has no consumer products tie-in, it’s just meant to be kind of an art project at the studio. And so it was allowed to be this very mature, different show for an audience that they didn’t really understand. And-and so when it was over we were like, “Alright, well, back to the old way.” Uh, you know, we were prepared for it and we, you know, we definitely had more of, like, a fun campy vibe to Voltron, but we still wanted to try to push those bigger themes--
JDS: I think we maximized as much of the, like, sort of pathos and-and sort of hero’s journey and sort of deep character introspective stuff as we could.
KC: Yeah.
JDS: But, you know, it’s-it’s funny too because it just seems, maybe even to ourselves, but it seemed like the lines got blurred even in how it was, uh, uh, received by the fandom and received by, even like, the media outlets. It was-it was sort of, like, on the cusp of being talked about, you know, with other shows that were way more mature like, “Oh, the Game of Thrones of it all” and it’s like “[hesitant honking noise].”
[laughter]
KC: “We didn’t kill that many pe--oh we did kill that many people. We ended reality!”
MS: [indistinct] way more people than Game of Thrones.
JDS: So we did. We did-we pushed the boundaries.
LM: Yeah, and we would--we’d find ourselves getting compared to shows that we were… like live-action shows where, like, “Oh, they should have done it like this,” and it’s like, “That, that would be awesome if that were an option at all--”
JDS: Right, right, right.
LM: “--in any way.” But, uh, us-us to consider our, like, little robot lion show being made, us trying to make this show for as many people as possible under the guidelines of a “boys toys” show, it’s never gonna be able to have, like, quite the ability to push farther that, like, a live-action, like Walking Dead on AMC that’s at 10 o’clock at night specifically for adults where you don’t have to worry about “how are my kids gonna do with this?”
KC: If your kids are watching Walking Dead, you have other problems.
MS: Either that or you’re the best parent in the world.
KC: Uh, disagree.
MS: Agree to disagree!
KC: Disagree!
MS: But was it that sort of desire to push the boundaries that, sort of, resulted in this climax where, “Yeah, we have the big action set piece leading up to it,” but ultimately the resolution is one that’s brought up from empathy and understanding.
JDS: I think so. And I think--I will say DreamWorks was incredibly patient with us with regards to us broaching a lot of these subjects. They were, you know, maybe still figuring things out in terms of how they would approach, you know, other topics that we can-we can get into a little later. But I would say the finale is almost--I don’t know, I don’t want to say unlike anything you would see in other like-minded shows, like, let’s say Transformers or Power Rangers or something that, like, Voltron was by outward appearances being compared to--but it was something, I think, really exciting for us to be able to explore because we did create villains and create heroes that worked within this very, kind of like, shades of gray spectrum. There was-there was-there was black, there was white, but we played in this really weird, morally-ambiguous zone a lot of the time and that was, I think it’s important for, kind of, audiences of every age group to see that.
LM: And, you know, we also came from working on shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Korra which very much pushed those boundaries as well, and were extremely groundbreaking for, you know, children’s programming and it was not something that was coming out of western animation. So, uh, I mean we, I would say we learned an insane amount from Mike and Bryan.
JDS: We just had to reverse-engineer that into the goofy cat lady. [Hosts laugh] You know what I mean? That was, like, that was our, like, little-little trick to the industry. It was like, “How do we do all that cool stuff that-that we were able to do in those shows and sort of cram it into this package?”
LM: Yeah, and honestly, like, a lot of it was just us knowing that our ability to, like, show everything on-screen, like, every type of representation we might have wanted to show. We might not get our way on everything, but at least through having these larger lessons we can-we can still push those messages of acceptance and of understanding and of, like, looking beyond. And you know, those are just important messages. I think, like, everyone kind of learns them in their life in their own way and, uh, I don’t know, like, I was such a little, like, asshole kid [Hosts laugh] that, like, I, like, didn’t understand empathy. I didn’t understand why people cried when they were happy, I was like, “Why would you cry when you’re happy? Like, you’re happy.” And then, of course, now I’m the woman who watched a T-Mobile commercial today and friggin’ cried, so--
JDS: I want to know what this commercial was.
LM: It was beautiful. I’ll describe it to you after because I don’t want to take time.
[Laughter]
LM: But uh--
KC: Advertising other brands, uh, [concerned noise].
LM: But uh, you know, there-there are things that come through, I think, life experience and through learning and our paladins had that, kind of, on steroids with their whole Voltron journey, so you know, to really show how that manifested and how they learn from it was… it’s important, and it-I think it’s just important for kids to see it, even if they’re not there in their life yet, to know when they get there they look back and, like, “Oh, I-I saw that, like--”
JDS: “I saw that happening to that character.”
KC: To be able to see it happen to someone else and someone that you’re invested in because, “Oh, it’s Lance! He’s my favorite!” and then you watch him grow from this brat to the right arm of Voltron. Yeah, actually I think this is a good point to start talking about character arcs in this season.
MS: I think so! Yeah!
KC: Let’s talk about Honerva. Let’s talk about this horrorterror! She’s-she is amazing and horrifying and not the villain I expected to make it to the very end. Here we are, I’m impressed.
JDS: Let me ask you, though, were you at all sympathetic to her and her, sort of, cause [indistinct]?
MS: 100%. Um, it-it’s so--she was one of the most fascinating characters to watch because once she gets her memory back and she realized--you know, contextually-speaking we as the audience find out who she is at the same time she does--uh, you, you slowly start to realize how much of this entire scenario she’s responsible for whether inadvertently or not. And so it’s so fascinating watch her refusal to take responsibility for her part in it but still desperately wanting that sym--you know, the human connections that she was denied. You know, human, so to speak.
JDS: Sure.
MS: Altean!
JDS: Altean.
KC: It’s telling that the perfect world that she found to slot herself into is the dimension where she died. [MS makes an agonized noise] Where-where this whole--
JDS: She was taken out of the equation?
KC: Yeah, it’s possible that it’s a dimension where the comet never happened because Voltron was obviously a surprise. The alliances were still there but the giant robots were, “You’ve brought this monster down upon us, what are you?”
JDS: Right.
KC:  So it’s-it’s telling that that’s the perfect dimension that she found is the one where she died super early on.
MS: And correct me if I’m wrong, but her--to obtain the perfect world--she was also basically willing to kill infinite versions of her son and her husband in order to get what she deemed she was worthy of.
JDS: Well, I--that’s, and that’s sort of like the misdirected love, right? Like, she was in one hand looking for the acceptance and the love of family that she never had, but she was blind to everything else, all the other chaos that she was causing as a result. That to me is-is interesting. I feel, you know--
LM: Yeah. It’s an interesting character. It’s not necessarily, like, the most honorable by any means, but you know, characters, when you can understand why they want it but then you see them doing things that are absolutely unacceptable to get it, it’s like you know it’s wrong but you know, you can-can kind of understand--
JDS: We’re hearing crackle in our ears, everybody. [Hosts laugh] That might be me, I’m just gonna go ahead and put it on the floor.
MS: It’s probably mine.
KC: It’s--your phone case doesn’t like the table. It-it’s, no seriously, it’s super weird and I’m pretty sure it’s your phone case. Sorry, I was trying to do that silently so I didn’t interrupt you.
JDS: I was going to call attention to it, please carry on, sorry.
LM: Oh no, we were talking about Honerva, or something.
KC: Great podcasting.
LM: Yeah, there-there’s something really incredible, like, interesting to me about her, kind of victim mentality where she-she really won’t accept that, like, a lot of this is her fault. She just looks at, basically, like, she’s lost her whole life. She’s witnessed it not knowing that it was hers, realizing looking back on all the things she should have done differently, that she could have done differently and it’s kind of, you know, she’s kind of trying to point that blame. I was like, “Well, if I--the quintessence hadn’t, uh-duh-duh,” you know, she-she’ll turn it on everyone except her, even though she was right there, you know, kind of diving into this whole quintessence research and bringing this whole thing about.
KC: “It’s Voltron’s fault.”
[MS laughs]
JDS: But it was also cool, I think, you know, one of the things that I was really surprised of in the room--I don’t really remember how it came up--was the notion that when she shows up in this reality and then Voltron follows, they’re like, “Why have you brought this, like, demon monster to our world?” It’s a-it’s-it’s a-it’s a crazy, sort of, flip of the script where really, you know, Voltron was doing good, but in a lot of people’s eyes and it’s, you know, in a certain people’s eyes, it could be seen as--
LM: I mean, you wouldn’t know. You wouldn’t know any better.
JDS: --bringing chaos.
MS: Voltron was the robeast in that scenario.
JDS: That’s right!
MS: You know, it’s like, “Look at this giant monstrosity that’s gonna wreak havoc on our planet.”
KC: Because Honerva parked hers out back.
LM: She was smart enough to store it off-planet, wink wink.
JDS: And we were talking a little bit before this about, you know, how there’s this portion of the fandom that’s like, “How could you, like, justice for Lotor!” and-and where, you know, “where is his redemption” and “how could you kill him off?” and obviously, you know, we feel we’re coming from a point of, you know, he’s gone so far off the deep end that-that death was really the only, sort of, salvation that he had on some level. But it’s interesting that it was-it was Lotor in that reality, there was a version of Lotor that was, you know, unaffected and uncorrupted, and-and you know, doesn’t come from that-that kind of horrific background that our Lotor did that, uh, was in essence, kind of kicked off everything being turned on Honerva’s plans.
KC: Yeah.
MS: It really does highlight how a person’s, like, the circumstances that they find themselves in really do have an effect on the person they become.
JDS: Right.
KC: But it’s also a matter of choice. Like, this up--these awful, awful things happen to him, like there’s no question that Lotor would have turned out better had his parents been physically capable of empathy. They’re kind of zombies, so it’s an issue.
JDS: There’s nature versus nurture.
KC: That’s not the weirdest thing I’ve said today.
JDS: Aww.
KC: That’s not the weirdest thing I’ve said today. Um, but even after all that happened, he made the choice to go, “You know what? Fine! Violence it is!” And lean super hard into that curve, even while he was still going, “Oh no, I don’t want to mess with my Galra heritage. Oh no, I’d rather be an Altean. Oh no, this.” Like…
JDS: Right. And-and that’s--I think that noncleanliness of, like, where he fits in and, like, the villain category, or the hero category, or the character that’s going to be redeemed, or… That is an area that we like to play in and sometimes does not have the answers that everybody’s sort of hoping for, you know.
LM: We’d like to blur those lines, but sometimes, you know, the lines are blurred, therefore the fans have their own interpretations, but ultimately it’s a story, guys. And not everyone gets to have a happy ending in the story.
JDS: I will say he was beautiful.
[laughter]
JDS: He had beautiful hair.
KC: He did!
JDS: And him and Allura together look beautiful together.
MS: Mm-hmm!
KC: This is very true.
LM: Oh, you’re treading into some dangerous territory there, buddy.
JDS: But, you know, I will--that, you know, that isn’t from a story perspective, sort of, place to, uh--
LM: Yeah.
JDS: --to work back from if that makes sense.
KC: Yeah, but, you ever see those beautiful flowers and then you go to smell them and they smell like death itself? That’s kinda that.
JDS: Hell of a point. MS: I still ship it, but no! It does not work within the framework of the narrative in any capacity.
JDS: Sure, sure.
KC: Look, there is a universe in which it happened and it was fine, this is not that universe.
MS: And that’s the--
JDS: And that’s the beauty of more--
MS: Multiverse stories! There’s an AU where it totally worked out and everyone was happy.
LM: Yes, and there’s comics to be written, fanfics, go crazy.
KC: Yeah.
MS: Yeah, well, and ultimately it’s the memory of what he was trying to do that brings Honerva around.
JDS: Exactly. Yeah. And so there was, there was goodness in him, like, you can’t-you can’t deny that. But, um, some actions are, you know, really your only way out.
KC: You kinda gotta--
JDS: From a story perspective is you gotta, you gotta kind of pay that ultimate price.
KC: Well, for Lotor there was some good in him, but uh, cool motive, still murder.
MS: So much murder!
KC: Lots and lots of murder!
JDS: Totally involved a ton of murder.
KC: Yeah, pretty sure all of the battery Alteans are super dead because I don’t think anyone else found that moon.
MS: Yeah!
JDS: Right.
MS: Talk to Bandor if you wanna hear about why Lotor doesn’t get a redemption arc.
[KC makes uncomfortable noises]
MS: I’m sure Romelle would love to hear your thoughts on that.
JDS: By the way, when that episode came out, and when we were getting, like, the recording, we couldn’t stop saying to each other, “Bandor! Bandor!” Like, we loved that read so much, like, and we love that name.
[Hosts laugh]
LM: Bandor.
JDS: Oh, Bandor.
MS: Well there were-there were a lot of fun--talking about that--there were a lot of fun references to the original series in this season. Like at the very beginning we actually have a clip from the original series playing.
KC: We did! “I don’t sound like that!” God bless Bex and their ability to sound like that.
JDS: Yeah.
LM: We, uh, we love the original show and we always had this silly idea because we played with so many different realities that, like, what if in our reality the show it’s, it’s technically live-action to them and it’s being made about them. And so it’s like, because here we are making a show that’s based on that show, and I was like, “Ooh, what if that show was based on our show?”
JDS: It’s super meta, it’s like inverse meta.
LM: It was just funny to us that, like, we could work it in. And we always wanted to work it in in some way just because, you know, we love it and we like to pay homage to it. But that, like, we-we joked about it and we actually had a few more references, like, in the episode. I ended up way super-overwriting that episode, so we cut a bunch of stuff, like, you know like the rookie writer mistake. Um, but, uh--
JDS: It was all gold, it was all gold. It just had to go.
LM: Yes.
[Hosts laugh]
LM: I paid him to say that.
MS: You have to kill your darlings.
KC: Yup.
LM: But, uh, there was a scene where they were gonna see, like, the Sven dies scene. Shiro wasn’t there, though, but like, Eddie was like, “Hunk and Keith were, like, at little viewing party with, like, Hunk’s family.” And uh, and then they see the scene, they’re like, “Wow, they’re really taking some liberties” like--
[laughter]
LM: “--they were making their own story about the paladins.” And it was just--
KC: There wasn’t a space hospital!
JDS: That’s right.
MS: I would have expired. I would not be here right now if that had happened because I would have died laughing.
KC: I would’ve been doing this show on my own this season.
JDS: There-there was a version of it.
LM: It never made it, it never even really made it past, like, the roughs and storyboard, ‘cuz again, like, I so overwrote that episode that we just started hacking stuff out.
JDS: There was also, Tim Hedrick did an amazing Pidge in the room and a lot of, like, us being so obsessed with him was just going like, “Waaaahhhh?” If ever something was, like, confusing he would just go “waaahhhhh”. Bring in more OG Pidge. Bex.
KC: Yeah, Bex’s ability to emulate that voice.
JDS: Oh, she nailed it.
KC: Oh yeah, they are just wonderful.
MS: They’re amazing.
LM: Yeah, we got to do that, we got to have the little nod to, like, Pidge’s outfit and Allura’s outfit that, like, kind of goes by real quick.
MS: Those are so fun.
KC: That was pretty great.
MS: That montage. And then we got Chip at the end, too! And Vehicle Voltron!
LM: I know! Like, we’re the biggest trolls ever, like, “here’s a show we’re never gonna make!”
KC: That and the epilogue about, “They made the next generation of Voltron!” and it’s like, “it’s happening. It’s happening!”
JDS: We queued it up real nicely for whoever wants to do it, by the way.
LM: Yeah, you know, if anyone wants to take that. But, uh, we, you know, I, so, I’m just gonna admit I never watched Vehicle Voltron.
JDS: How dare you.
KC: Same, I had to google what Chip was.
LM: But, uh, you know, like, I did my research. Like, there’s a cool idea to-idea to it there and-and my husband and I were originally recently watching Patlabor--how they call it, that’s what they call it on the thing--Patlabor.
JDS: That’s probably close.
LM: They call Labors. Patlabor was what we always called it, but they’re called Labors and it’s this, like, cop mech show and it’s really clever, like, it’s fun because they have mechs and they’re cops and they just, kind of, episode to episode do cop things. And I was like, “Well, if you’re gonna make a vehicle Voltron, you’ve got these three teams, they could basically be, like, cops in mechs.” And it would be a lot of fun.
MS: You just described my dream show, oh my god.
LM: But, uh, yeah, we queued it up and then-and Chip I just, I loved the idea, like, Pidge’s one goal in life, you know, going out into the world and seeing sentient AI, like to create one of her own and she’s doing it, like, with her brother and it’s this, like, nice bonding moment. And then the fact that Chip was, like, what, Pidge’s cousin or something?
JDS: Yeah, that’s right [indistinct].
MS: I think it was her brother. I believe it was brother in the loosest--it was really just--
JDS: I thought it was just cousin.
MS: It was--it might’ve been cousin.
KC: Well, I mean Sven had “a brother” that they found later on.
MS: It’s a little hard because they started cutting together different series to continue Voltron, so it’s hard to say.
LM: It just made a lot of sense that, you know, she would pursue that and that would be her passion. Technology is her passion. And then you’re with her family and then obviously being such a huge part of the Galaxy Garrison with Voltron, kind of, you know, taking itself out of the equation, they would then--
JDS: Sort of take up the mantle.
LM: Yeah, and then really--
JDS: I do think there’s a pitch, though, where Chip ends up taking over Earth as, like, a sentient AI and becomes the villain a thousand years later.
MS: And it’s the singularity!
LM: Hey man, I was just about to say, like, the dark version is that, like, the Voltron that Sam and-and everyone creates ultimately is, like, you know, the police and then they--yeah--they become the power-hungry, power-hungry Earth.
KC: And there’s a scrappy Galra resistance.
JDS: And they flip the script and become the good guys.
LM: There you go.
KC: Living long enough to see yourself become the villain.
MS: Oh my gosh, I love it.
KC: I don’t have time to get into how much I love this AU because we are gonna run out of time here in a hot second. I--there’s so much I want to talk about and I’m having such a hard time deciding things.
MS: Let’s talk about Allura.
KC: Oh, Allura. She had such a rough season. Incredibly well-telegraphed, very rough.
LM: For sure, I think, you know, we-we knew, like, coming down to it that with Honerva being the final villain, and basically we have two female Altean people who have had a very similar thing happen to them. They’ve lost their families, they’ve lost, like, the life they knew, and it’s just two very different ways of how they handled it.
JDS: That’s right. They’ve had very, in a weird way, similar circumstances and come-and approached it from very different angles.
LM: Yeah, it’s a storyline we wanted to originally do, kind of with Keith and Lotor back when, like, our kind of original story pitch where Shiro was gonna, kind of, exit the show, Keith was gonna be here, he was gonna stay with the team so he wouldn’t have jetted off and gone into the Blade of Marmora, and it was gonna be a big, like Lotor season where you got Lotor, half Altean and half Galra, Keith, half Galra, half human. And it’s like, you’ve got--
JDS: They sort of were--
LM: --yeah, the duality of those two and, like, how does it work out? And, you know, you see Lotor seems like the guy who has it all together in the beginning, but then ultimately Keith evolves and becomes a better person. So we got to play a little bit of that here with Allura and Honerva, who… very similar situations, but Allura going about it, like, the way that it’s-it’s painful to her. She did lose her entire family, she lost her planet, her home, and even now there’s-there’s a sense in the first episode where she realizes once this war ends, she might not even have, like, her Voltron family. It’s like, they have families--
JDS: They’re all gonna go on their ways.
LM: --like, “what are they gonna do? They don’t need me anymore.” And it’s this, kind of, very--it’s selfish in a way, but it’s beautiful because she can feel that way, but she’s not acting on it.
JDS: Right. She’s allowing herself to feel it, but she’s not acting on it.
LM: She’s not sabotaging the war effort to keep them, which, I would have loved to do that. That dark, sick, twisted version of, like, Allura sabotaging the war effort to keep her Voltron family, but, uh--
KC: There is a universe where that happens.
JDS: Yeah, sure.
LM: But uh, but yeah, it was just beautiful to kind of see how much she was willing to take onto herself
JDS: And at the end of the day, like, you know, we keep sort of using this term “boys toys show” because that’s sort of the reality of what we came into. We sort of were taking on this--this franchise that was very merchandise-based and trying to sell toys to young boys essentially. And at the end of the day it became this story, almost Allura’s story solely when you-when you really sort of, like, step back and look at it, but it was-it was this, sort of, face-off of two strong women that were approaching these problems from very different angles and who the heck would have known that that would have, you know, that would have been the--
LM: Yeah, we didn’t even really know it at the beginning.
JDS: We didn’t. We really didn’t. It evolved.
LM: But, but, yeah. It was nice. It was nice because when we-we told Kimberly, and of course she was sad and like, listen, we know it’s--we never--it’s never personal, we’re not like, “You know, I don’t like that Kimberly, let’s kill Allura.” It’s never that.
KC: At the very last minute.
LM: But it’s, like--
JDS: We also told Neil when--
LM: We told Neil, and we try to be kind and, like, let people know and so we let her know ahead of time and so she’s not just reading the script like, “What the hell?”
KC: “What?!”
LM: And she was sad, but we just let her know, like, “Listen, this is Allura’s story, like, she is literally the hero. She’s not dying to further another hero’s story, she is the hero. Like, this war ends with her.” And then I made her a completely, um, fake promise that I couldn’t really make her. But it--
JDS: I think I know what this fake promise is.
LM: Because I have no control over what they do with Voltron, but I was like, “Listen, if we do any more episodes, I’m bringing her back. We’re not--I’m not making this show without her.” But then, like, I have no control.
MS: But there’s no Voltron without Allura.
LM: I have no control after this point.
KC: Eight seasons, now we need a movie.
JDS: Honestly that the, sort of, post-credits thing was leaving that door open.
LM: Yeah.
JDS: The Lions taking off and seeing the, you know, Allura nebulae, I think, in our minds, it was sort of her quintessence coalescing and--
LM: Reforming. It’s, like, kind of coming back together, so you can do whatever you want with that, like--
JDS: Yeah, but it was--
KC: Have fun, guys!
JDS: Honestly it was-it was a door left open. Like, there’s nobody ever really dies in comics or animation.
LM: I mean, yeah. I feel like comics and animation and sci-fi in and of itself is a door left open.
JDS: Right, right, right.
LM: If the word sci-fi exists in a definition of your show, there is a door left open.
JDS: This was like one step back from the ending of Iron Giant. [hosts going “ohhh”] Like, we didn’t actually, like, show all the pieces going and the thing.
LM: Yeah, like there isn’t an Allura hand that’s just, like, crawling through space.
JDS: Yeah, there’s no hand, like, jumping through the snow.
MS: That would have been terrible! Oh my gosh. But yeah! I think there’s this misconception because Allura is a woman of color and so I think a lot of fans only looking at it superficially were like, “Oh, the woman of color was killed off.” And it’s, like, yeah, there is a trope of people of color dying to save the stupid white people around them, like I understand that trope. But the problem with that superficial interpretation is that they’re ignoring the fact that she’s the main character here.
JDS: Well, there’s that and also just to put it on the table, our original pitch was that they were all gonna die.
KC: Woah!
[Hosts scream and cackle]
JDS: And that got taken off the table.
KC: I love it!
LM: It’s teamwork! Voltron! And honestly, in my opinion, that would have been an easier, like, window to bring them back. If they all disappeared, you could pop them all back anytime and you got the team again. Easy-easy spinoff. But, uh--
JDS: Sorry if the board is blowing up.
KC: So it wouldn’t have been, like, literal bodies, it would have been just disappeared.
LM: Yeah.
KC: Okay.
JDS: We’re not showing, like--
KC: We’re not showing Lotor.
JDS: We showed, like, the melted, like, Lotor body, but--
LM: It would have been the same--
MS: Nobody’s getting Cronenberged in this scenario
KC: Except Lotor.
LM: --same scene except that we, you know, instead of Allura taking it upon herself, they all would have agreed to do it together and-and they would have gone in and essentially taken Voltron out of the equation.
JDS: Right.
LM: That was something we actually really believed for even from early on, we introduced this idea that Alfor had helped to create this thing, not realizing how dangerous it could be; kind of like, you know, the person who created the atom bomb, and, like, having that guilt. And so having Allura be part of the team that took Voltron out of the equation and now that weapon isn’t available to anyone, that was a big deal. We were told that was too sad.
[Hosts laugh]
KC: Uh, you broke chat. Alexis is in chat going, “*rocking back and forth, broken*”. Like, congratulations. Everyone, take a drink of your nonalcoholic beverage of choice.
MS: Oh that is-that is a line of gibberish that she typed.
KC: Oh yeah, no. Everyone’s just losing their noise, it’s great. I love it.
JDS: It was, you know, in a strange way I think, a beautiful sacrifice that Allura is allowed to make. And also really when you think about it, if it had to come down to any one person, she’s from, like, a logistical standpoint she’s the only one powerful enough and we’ve sort of through, you know, being a life-giver.
LM: So, we’ve had a lot of characters, like, who’ve been on, like, the death table. We’ve thrown them all out there at some point.
JDS: Right.
LM: But they all had to, kind of, get thrown out at a point in the story where it made sense that their death would have been worth it. Like, for Pidge, it would have been saving her family. Like if she had died to save her family. For Hunk, it would’ve been saving Earth, which almost happened. Um…
JDS: Hunk was, like, inches away.
[Hosts go “ohhh” and laugh]
LM: We got a yes, and then, like, you know, they were like, “Who’re you gonna replace him with?” And we were like, “A lady,” and then they said, “No.”
MS: Ohhhh.
KC: Would Romelle have been the pilot?
LM: It would have been, it was gonna be Acxa. Yeah, it was gonna be a redemption arc that takes place over this last season of, “It’s not about who you were, it’s about who you are,” and the fact that she’s done some bad things. But she truly believes in doing the right thing and moving forward and she could have been a viable part of that team.
JDS: But I-I also would argue that, like, there’s no--there wouldn’t have been enough time, I think, for everybody to, like, absorb that. If we had, like, a three season run at, like, bringing her in, getting her settled, and then having her, that would have made more sense.
LM: Yeah, that was a hesitation.
JDS: But Hunk’s was especially tragic, like, it was the moment where they were gonna--where they were taking robeast up and there was, like, that ticking time-bomb going off. He literally sees his family, but he’s never actually, like, interacted with them. So he only gets to look at them and see that they’re alive, and then he’s like, “I gotta get this thing out of here.” Sorry everybody!
LM: But he didn’t die! We didn’t kill anyone.
MS: And speaking of dark storylines, princesspony in the hashtag did some fanart of evil Chip.
JDS: Oh wow!
[laughter]
KC: They are very fast.
LM: World domination.
MS: Check out the hashtag #ABTVVoltron to check that out, it makes me very happy.
JDS: Are there red glowing eyes?
MS: No, it’s black and white, but he does look very happy.
LM: But Allura’s death was the only one that made sense from a power standpoint and even from a story standpoint that we were setting up with Honerva. And then also just on--I know, like, it’s probably gonna be highly contested--but on a feminist level from my standpoint, the-the man is always the one who gets to be the hero. Like Armageddon, Bruce Willis sacrifices himself to send, you know, friggin’ Ben Affleck back. And if-if basically Keith had gone like, “I’ll do it,” and then, you know, Allura had to stand on the sidelines and say, “Good thing Keith saved the day! I’m happy!” Like no. I want my women to be able to save the day, too, and even if it’s about making that ultimate sacrifice, if people want to interpret that as sexist, then that’s fine. But we’re just gonna have to agree to disagree.
KC: I mean, Keith tried to do the heroic sacrifice at one point and it didn’t work.
MS: They went, and you guys went, “No! Don’t do that!”
KC: Lotor was just like, “Excuse me.”
LM: We tried to kill Keith, though.
MS: This was--
LM: That’s not a lie.
MS: You guys apparently tried to kill everyone!
LM: We did. It was because we were told we couldn’t kill Shiro. Like, well, we don’t need two leaders, we’ll kill Keith. And they said, “You can’t do that.”
[Hosts laughing and sputtering]
JDS: Also by the way, we’re not kill-happy people. We’re not. We don’t kill for the sake of killing, like, there’s something--it’s a journey and there’s something meaningful, I think, to everybody’s death. And-and so when you even look at, like, melted Lotor corpse. Like, he basically had done to him what he had done to so many other people, so there’s, like, a sort of a give and a take there.
MS: And like a show where--I don’t want to rag on any other shows that skirt around death or anything like that, because again, they are writing for certain demographics--but I always appreciate when shows have, you know, actions have consequences. And sometimes character death is a really good way of conveying that. And I think for a lot of other people, people forget that Allura in season 1 is the same character that picked up Shiro, threw him out of a room right as the doors were closing, and basically could have died in that moment. She was sacrificing herself, so it’s not like this is out of character for her.
LM: Yeah, and Coran said, like, 15 different times, like, you know, “What about the risks? You could-you could not come back from this. If you give all your quintessence to the balmera, if you give all your quintessence to making this gigantic wormhole to transport Zarkon’s ship.”
JDS: “If you take the darkness into yourself.”
LM: And every time, she would say, like, “I know the risks.”
KC: Yolo.
[laughter]
MS: Until she walks into the west with the other elves.
KC: Or into the void with Honerva. I love that she had to do a hard reset on Honerva’s brain and then we could fix things. Like, she’s the only one that would have been able to do that in any capacity.
LM: Yeah.
JDS: Yeah, and it’s allowing Honerva to maybe experience the consequences that came as a result of her actions and really understand what those--
LM: It’s allowing her to get past, like, the cloud of all of the pain she’s felt, realize, like, remember the good things because sometimes you can get so bogged down with the negativity that you can forget what it was that you loved about a thing in the first place. And she was Altean and she loved discovery, she loved knowledge, and she-she reached out with Alfor and she helped multiple people before, you know, they started this quintessence project that kind of messed everything up. So she just kind of had to show--
JDS: She had hopes, she had dreams, she had heart.
LM: Yeah. At one point.
JDS: [quietly] At one point.
KC: Is there anything else that you--’cuz we’re hitting the end of our time--is there anything else you guys want to touch on now or should we save a few things for next week?
JDS: Uh, yeah, I mean, you know, look, we, I think, Lauren made a really good point in that, you know, sometimes you sort of lose sight of the good things for, you know, some of the negative things. We’d only hope that, you know, the sort of big post-mortem from the fandom at large-- even those that are super unhappy with the way season 8 turned out--sort of looks back on the series with positive feelings because I think there’s, while feelings might get hurt and feelings might--people might feel betrayed by, like, story decisions, like, the show was made with nothing but, like, love and good intentions and positivity and yes we told some hard stories to tell and characters came to certain conclusions that weren’t, like, the most popular decisions, but we were just trying to tell a story that, like, looked beyond the campiness and beyond the colorful robotic silliness to tell something that felt a bit more true and a bit more real and had, as one of our execs would always say, stakes and consequences.
LM: No, stakes and urgent stakes.
JDS: Stakes and urgent stakes.
LM: That was gonna be a restaurant.
KC: That’s one of Vrepit Sal’s new chains. It’s part of Hunk’s food empire. “Steaks and Urgency.”
JDS: But we can, you know, leave all the other stuff for our other show.
LM: Good times.
MS: Yeah, and princesspony has made a new version that’s got red eyes.
JDS: Ah! Red eyes! Red evil eyes!
KC: You asked for red eyes and in-chat they went, “I’ll add red eyes!” All for the red eyes. Well, yeah, thank you for joining us this week. This has been absolutely lovely. Are there any other projects you’re working on that you can tell us about?
JDS: No.
KC: Okay! NDAs it is!
LM: I am working on getting my floors re-done, and I’m getting the popcorn scraped off my ceilings, which is a lot more expensive than I realized it was gonna be. And-and moving all of my crap out of the house so that these people can do this work and that is a hell of a project that I would not wish on anyone.
JDS: And I just took a week off with my wife to Marie Kondo our entire house.
KC: Dang!
MS: Nice!
JDS: She didn’t come over or anything, but we definitely--
LM: Did you actually put it all in a pile?
JDS: She did with her clothes, and it was pretty epic, like, my pile went to your sister to eBay off, so that was. And my pile of toys.
LM: Oh, right, right.
JDS: Her sister is a sweet human being and like, will like, yeah. During the course of Voltron, during the production, like, super weighty dark times, I would just go on, like, eBay and be like, “buy, buy, buy, buy” and a pile of toys stacked up behind me that I never opened up.
LM: Yeah, me too. We had a cardboard box fort.
JDS: Yeah.
KC: Oh, goodness.
LM: And then he had a kid and said, “Oh no, I don’t need all this stuff.”
KC: And return to sender.
JDS: Yeah.
KC: Sounds fun.
MS: eBay.
KC: Where can the people go on social media if they would like to keep up with you?
LM: Um, all of the same places: @artofLaurenM on Twitter, @thebestlaurenmontgomery on Instagram, though I will say the Voltron posts are kind of over at this point. So maybe don’t follow me now if you’re just coming for Voltron. You’ll probably be a little disappointed.
JDS: Same for me. Um, @jds_247 on something and @jds_77 on the other thing. There you go. Underscore in between those. Sorry.
KC: So I’m gonna follow you guys now for Voltron. [laughter] No, no!
JDS: That’s fine!
LM: But if you like any of my other artwork, you’re more than welcome to stay.
KC: I like all of your other artwork.
MS: It’s so pretty!
KC: Alright, thanks again for coming, you guys.
JDS: Thanks for having us, you guys have been awesome this entire time.
LM: And we’ll be back next week.
JDS: That’s right.
KC: Yes we will! I was gonna save that announcement for a little bit. Uh, Megan, where can people find you?
MS: You guys can follow me on Instagram and Twitter at @themenguin. I was gonna say, I wanted to give a quick shoutout to Mark and Emma and Alexis who all were wearing the hashtag tonight. We miss you guys and we love you and we’ll be seeing you soon!
KC: And on the live chat in Alexis’ case.
MS: Love you, Alexis!
KC: You can follow yellow lion Mark Donica at @MarkBDonica, co-red lion Emma Fyffe at @EmmaFyffe, and blue Lauren--blue Lauren--blue lion [unintelligible]. You had fit everything you needed into a single suitcase. It was quite a feat but you had made it a must. The conference was only four days and you didn’t need your entire library. You doubted you’d have much time to read as you’d be revising and rehearsing in the hours before you presented. Then you’d be sitting through hours of papers afterward which would consume most of your energy and focus.
The flight was long and your legs were so stiff it hurt to move. You had never quite grasped the concept of sleeping during travel and so you were overtired and ready to keel over. Your head pounded and all you wanted was to curl up and black out.
You caught the shuttle which was pre-arranged for presenters and loaded up along with a dozen other of your colleagues. Despite the communal fatigue, there was a buzz in the air and the scholars introduced themselves in hopes of discussing the days to come. You repeated your name to a few but were not of the cognition to retain any of theirs.
You took a window seat and listened to the chatter though the words were little more than noise. You watched the Wakandan landscape pass you; shady trees, long grasses, interspersed with modernized buildings and vibrant fields. It was unlike any place you had seen before. The whole world had been competing to reach a future which already existed.
The shuttle stopped outside your hotel; its silver facade reflected the setting sunlight and its windows shone like hundreds of watching eyes. You found your bag amid the rabble and yawned as you stared up at the building. You were still trying to accept that you were in Wakanda! You had been chosen out of thousands.
You waited in the queue before the front desk, many others having arrived within minutes of you. When you reached the front you presented your identification and were handed a package in turn; your credentials, maps, guides, menus, even souvenirs. Everything you needed for your stay though you had little energy to do more than tuck it under your arm.
You found your room on the ninth floor and closed the door with a sigh of relief. Finally you could relax. You hated travelling for the anxiety it stirred in you; you always felt as if anything could go wrong and you would be stuck in limbo forever.
You set your alarm and kicked off your shoes, falling onto the queen bed which stood centre to the room. You would worry about everything in the morning but first, you desperately needed sleep.
It was like you were being stabbed in the brain as your alarm blared beside your head. You snorted and reached around blindly for your phone, swiping away the deafening whine. You sat up groggily and fumbled with the pods neatly sorted in a basket on the counter, setting a coffee to brew in the perculator.
You sat at the small dining table as you basked in the aroma of caffeine and looked through your phone. You should call your mother to tell her all was well and check your emails. At least try to keep up with your life, even if you didn’t have much of one.
You unpacked the envelope you had been given the night before; sorting through the programs for the next few days. Today would be the welcoming events and then three days of presentations;
Day One: Science
Day Two: History
Day Three: Arts and Culture
You had enough time to get washed up and call home before you had to be at the brunch though you doubted many would notice if you were late. Hell, you didn’t know anyone there and you couldn’t remember anyone you had met the night before. Even so, it would be good to get involved. This was a once in a lifetime experience and you only had four days!
You wore the lanyard included in your welcome package, your name and photo identifying you among the crowd. You found a seat among those who were easily recognizable as history nerds and began to sip on your third cup of coffee. You chewed on some fruit as you tried to ingratiate yourself with the strangers around you. It took you back to university and your crippling lack of social grace.
Working in the museum, it had been easy. You were merely sharing all you had learned with others. Paying it forward. But this was more stressful. One on one in a room of academics there purely on their skills. You felt out of place even though you had earned your spot the same as them.
A hush came over the tables and you followed the eyes to the front of the hall. The table at the head of the room was lined with the Wakandan royals and leaders, their king only then making his entrance. T’Challa walked to his seat and stood between his sister and his mother. Two female sentries stood just behind his seat, watching over him with spears in hand.
“I would like to welcome you all to Wakanda’s First Scholar’s Conference. We are excited for this exchange of ideas, cultural, social, and scientific. As we open our arms to the world, we hope that they should do the same and we are optimistic that this is the first step in doing so,” He bowed his head as he raised a glass and applause broke out without pause.
He was spoken like a true king, though to be fair, you had never seen a king in person before. You felt the hope he had spoken of and wondered if your paper could truly have as great an effect as all that. History was not so powerful as the future.
By the time the brunch had ended, you had achieved your first goal. You had made a friend, at least a tenuous one. Someone who looked as lost as you felt and you promised to see them through the conference if they did the same for you. Colleen reminded you of Jenn and liked to fidget with anything within reach. She was endearing and comforting, even if she never ceased moving.
You were laughing at some joke she had made about Cicero as you followed the tide of the crowd to the door. There was a whole schedule of events to choose from that day and you were still trying to decide if you’d rather explore Wakanda’s wilderness exhibit or the entrepreneurial fair. There was so much to explore and it was rejuvenating after the doldrum years you had spent at the museum.
You paused as you reached the hallway, keeping close to the wall as you waited for the swell to pass. You hated when you became swept up in a crowd and lost control. You’d rather the horde thin out so that you could find your way without being jostled. Colleen seemed grateful for the break and you checked your phone for the time.
“Pardon me,” You were nearly frightened as a skinny girl appeared before you, her eyes glued to your lanyard. She made no secret of reading it and her smiled betrayed her triumph, “I hope I’m not interrupting.”
You recognized her though she had been sitting all the way at the front of the room. She was the king’s sister, Shuri. He dark skin was like silk and her hair was finely twisted behind her head. Even so, there was a cunning glow to her which contradicted her princess status.
“P-princess Shuri, your majesty, I mean your grace--my lady,” Colleen was sputtering and you were struggling not to burst into laughter. You were as awestruck by the encounter but your new friend had beat you to the finish line of embarrassment.
“Shuri,” She assured Colleen with a smirk, “Please, no need to be nervous.” She looked to you with interest, “Y/N?” She touched your lanyard as if confirming it one last time, “My apologies but I thought since I happened by you, I’d take the chance now.”
“Chance?” You were utterly confused and Colleen’s fidgeting wasn’t helping matters.
“It’s almost like finding a needle in a haystack at these things and I was thinking it would be easier to find you at the hotel but I didn’t want to disturb you so late,” She explained, “Excuse me,” She turned to Colleen with a gentle smile and read her name tag casually, “Colleen, it’s so nice to meet you but could I borrow your friend.”
“Yes, your majesty, as you command,” Colleen curtsied and mumbled a befuddled farewell before awkwardly stumbling away. You waved over Shuri’s shoulder and watched her disappear into the crowd.
“Before anyone else notices me, could we step out?” The princess asked directing you through a door. “I’m sorry, this must be odd but I can’t really explain it. Would you come with me? I have someone who can.”
“Um, yes,” You stopped biting your lip to answer, “Look, is there something wrong? Did I do something?”
“No, no, you’re fine,” She gestured for you to follow and led you to another door. You walked beside her as she touched her cuff and spoke into it as if it were a phone, “I’ve found her. Where should I go?”
An answer you couldn’t hear came and she nodded, carrying on as if you weren’t being detained by a member of the royal family. You were starting to sweat and your thoughts were racing. You recalled Agent Everett K. Ross and the surveillance you knew he had kept on you. What if he had followed you all the way to Wakanda just to have you arrested?
“Please, you’re far too worried,” She broke through your thoughts as she stopped before a door, “You’ve done nothing wrong. There’s merely someone you need to talk to.”

I'm sorry to say this but...
Sadly, I'm not in the fnf community anymore. There's drama around every corner, and honest to god, there are too many .exe mods nowadays that it just feels like one big broken record at this point. I could go on explaining every crack in this community, but if I did, then this post would be way longer than it should be.
This blog, however, is too good to throw away. So, I'm gonna be archiving this blog and repurpose the whole RGMinus concept into something brand new with a redesign and rename for almost every character. Starting today, this thing will be known as Welcome to L¡mbo, which is actually gonna be a spin-off for another story of mine called Ethereal Hijinks.
I'll elaborate more on my plot later in my main blog, but for now, I have a sneak peek to share. A character portrait if you will :)

hat Healer’s touch Klaus Hargreeves x Reader
Plot: Reader is hired by Reginald to help take care of the kids after bad missions when they were young. As they grow older everyone grows apart. Especially when it’s the reader’s fault for her and Klaus’ demise. Her words always tend to cause something bad to happen.
Request: Yes/No (sorry I got carried away and drifted from your request quite a bit, but I hope you till find some joy in it)
Warnings: cursing, drug induced seizure, drug use, alcohol, angst, mentions of blood. A lot of time skips. Reader is a shitty person, overall this one shot is kind of a mess?
AN: This feels so short but its about 4000 words?? Sorry for any typos btw.

Y/N has always been a miracle; she was one of the 48 that managed to survive, her mother decided to keep her, and she was a healer. Everything about her was unique and extraordinary: her bright golden eyes, kind smile, and bubbly personality. Those were a few reasons why Klaus Hargreeves has always had feelings for her.
Since Y/N’s mother refused Reginald’s money, she agreed that when her daughter became more mature,  she was allowed to work for him if she pleased. When the time came, the young girl agreed that her power should be used for good, so she offered to help Reginald for free. Every time the Hargreeves children had a mission, Y/N would be at the mansion waiting for the first injured kid to stumble through the door. It had become a tradition that once every child was healed, that she would stay around at the mansion to play with the other kids. Today was no different, Y/N walked through the huge doors of the mansion just as most of the Hargreeves walked out. Within this limbo of time, Y/N would seek out Vanya, and listen to her play her gorgeous violin.
“Hello Mrs. Grace, is Vanya in her bedroom again?”
“Yes dear, head on up. You should know the way,” and with a kind smile Y/N made her way up the long stairs and down the never ending halls until she reached Vanya’s bedroom.
“Vanya!” Y/N had a tendency for hugs, so in this moment Vanya was engulfed within the tall girls arms. “How’s the new piece going? I can’t wait to hear it. Oh, you will play it for me, won’t you?”
The rest of that afternoon was spent with the two girls bonding over the most random things, sadly they were interrupted with the sound of the front door slamming open. That was Y/N’s queue, time to get to work. Running downstairs, Y/N caught a horrible sight. Blood. Blood was everywhere, all over everyone. She had no idea where the blood of the children started and the blood of someone else began. Quickly she got to work, holding her palms above the wound as her hands glowed, getting rid of the cuts completely. By the end of the process, the only blood in sight was the blood on Y/N’s petite hands. Welcome to Y/N’s everyday life.

5.d Ready for Africa!
That time of the year when I get ready for another adventure in some part of my beautiful continent, Africa! The count down has started, 5 days to go, I'm beyond excitement. This is the case every time, I get very excited as the days get closer, my ultimate is 5 days to go. It always feels like the first trip out of the country, I never know what to expect and that for me is what I love about travelling Africa, the continent.
I recall landing at Zanzibar airport a few years ago, it was an amazing racer trying to find an ATM to withdrew money. It was a very hot December, tourists all over with long queues at ATM. We waited on the queue and as we were about to withdrew money, ATM was tired and money finished. I thought it was a joke. We looked for another which was a few kilometres away; same group and same story line... it carried on for a couple which by the way weren't many. After the amazing race we decided to check-in at the hotel and rest. We didn't haved money for two days & had to choose our restaurants based on speedpoint payment. I learnt my lesson now I carry a few notes. Needless to say, this is by far my best holiday.
Now that I understand the importance of carrying cash, ready to explore Kenya. Aaah I was not prepared to be searched at every shopping centre I visited, it felt like checking in at boarder gates. I have never seen so much law personnel visibility except during apartheid days in South Africa. A culture shock for me but I've got so much respect for East Africa, they have the countries well protected... for any just in case.
Get it, you never know which movie you'll be starring in when visiting my continent. It is full of life, strong history and culture. The language is the best for me, I feel foreign in my own backyard. I've learnt to make sure I can at least say 'hello' 'thank you' 'how much' 'please' 'goodbye' in local language, it helps to get by.
I've visited Europe, several times, I can confidently say Africans are most friendlier & welcoming people ever... it must be the sunlight! When you ask for directions, people take time to explain and at times even take you closer to destination, there's no hurry OK, pole pole... except in West Africa (a story for another day), in general people are kind.
Ok back to my excitement. I'm 5 days away from boarding that plane and land somewhere very hot with no ocean this time. I've already started reading furiously about my upcoming destination and luckily for me I know some people that live there. Whatsapp on steroids as I gather information. Oh by the way I don't hire a car when I travel but this time, my advisors highly recommend that I get a car. I'm still in limbo, I'm going for adventure to explore the country & how will this work with the car.... I made it through Arusha, Kilimanjaro without the car, surely I can survive and save in the process! Apparently this country's transportation is bad and unsafe... duuh souunds very much like any country in Africa. It's always heart racing, adrenaline rush waiting for transport, you never know what will arrive; a mini bus, scooter, bicycles, tricycle, uber (yes we do have uber) it's part of the adventure. I'm still thinking about the car though, will decide on day 2!
There's a yellow fever situation, a must when visiting my survivor continent. It's lasts for ten years, I'm still good, I just need to find my travel yellow card, tucked somewhere.
.....interesting enough, packing is the least of my worries. I've mastered this one, I never use my extra kilos, if only I can trade them & make money, oh well, I need to research that.
My 'To Do' 'Must do' Bucketlist, well in place with only two things, the crest I'll figure out on arrival.
A day before, I make sure I indulge on my favourite wine & food, purely because I never know what's ahead. I binge on my television programmes & pack my reading material. I normally check in a day before to make sure I secure my favourite seat. Usally, I don't sleep well on the last night due to excitement & fear of saying bye to my plane from my living room. I'm a stickler for time, I work on 3,5 hours before not the recommended 2 hours, I have a lot of stories to tell about those missing they flights & connecting flights, I'd hate to be part of statistics.
At the airport, I have to visit the lounge just for the last drink & meal. I love this lounge moment, I often speak to myself (p:s I don't usually answer back) and smile looking at the journey ahead. It always feels as if it's my 1st trip. I can't wait, only 5 days to go & new memories will be made #travelwithmissj #travellingthecontinent #travel #travelblogger
🗣Till next time, #travelwithmissj reporting live from #durban, #southafrica #africa

Retired and Hiatus Saves
Well after that joyous queue, here’s a bit of information on the current state of affairs with my blog in regards to saves/neighborhoods. (Replies from the queue will be dealt with in a bit after some homework).
Retried Saves
All retired saves can be found on a page I snuck in a few weeks ago called Old Saves. Among the notable mentions include the Pleasantview-Widespot* ‘hood, and the Beachhead Valley ‘hood from TS2. Other less memorable TS3 and TS4 saves are in there as well.
Legacies, such as the Matthews Legacy, have been retired for some time. For the legacies that I’ve abandoned, check out the Legacy Master Page.
*More to come in the next section.
Hiatus Saves
Alright, I know I put Pleasantview-Widespot in the list of retired saves, but honestly? I love that ‘hood with all my might. It’s been going since June of 2015, and I don’t want to give up on it just yet. According to my notes, I’m in the exact middle of catching up rotations, I just don’t have the motivation/urge to play it constantly. It’ll reappear someday, but for now it’s in a weird state of limbo.
Supernatural Roommates (TS3) and Arcadia Peaks/Sykes Legacy (TS2) can both be considered on hiatus.
The Newton LEPacy is also on a hiatus, but might be for a shorter time. I know like the rest of you that legacies can get a bit repetitive until it’s time for the next generation. I’m going to be playing this save off-screen until Marina ages up to take over, because at the current moment there isn’t much for teens to do at this current point (Generations will be a welcome addition). Any pictures I find funny/noteworthy will be uploaded along the way.
I think that does it? I meant to make this post sooner, but time would sneak away from me. Also this is kind of jumbled together because like I mentioned, this in between doing homework, but I wanted to get it out before I forgot.

Mun name: Rachel OOC Contact: Asks please. I’m not a great fan of IMs and I keep my other contact information private.
Who the heck is my muse anyway: Kitty Pryde is a self-described mutant rights activist who was one of the youngest mutants to ever join the X-Men. Her powers emerged when she was thirteen and a half, when she phased through the floor of her second-level bedroom. The X-Men and Emma Frost both tried to convince her parents to let her go with them, with Emma kidnapping the X-Men in the process and Kitty working to save them. She joined a fractured and hurting X-Men team immediately after the death of Jean Grey, and her quick wit and terrible costume choices provided a welcome distraction from their woes. Despite her young age, she joined the X-Men on many missions, including fighting the Brood and Skrulls in space.
The first time she tried to leave the team, heartbroken over Piotr Rasputin, she was possessed by the ninja demon entity, Ogun, and was imbued with all the technical martial arts skills his mind offered. She returned to the X-Men, only to be injured in a battle with the marauders that left her permanently phased and in danger of dissipating from existence. After some time, with the help of the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom, she was returned to her natural state. However, the X-Men were soon killed, and she fled to England with her remaining friends, Rachel and Kurt, where she formed the British superhero team Excalibur with Brian Braddock and Meggan Puceanu. With Excalibur, Kitty traveled through time and across realities, and fell in love for a second time with Pete Wisdom. Some time after learning the X-Men were alive, Kitty returned to the United States to rejoin the team.
The second time Kitty left the team, it was to mourn the death of Piotr Rasputin and his sister Illyana to the Legacy Virus and the death of her father, killed on the mutant island Genosha. Wishing for a chance at normal life, Kitty moved back to her home state of Chicago and enrolls in college. But, there was no escaping the mutant life, and Kitty was forced to fight bigoted humans, mandatory therapy and Sentinels for the opportunity. Once again, she returned to the X-Men in their time of need, accompanying the team into space once more and sacrificing herself to save the Earth by phasing a giant bullet through the planet. She was lost in space for some time, before finally being saved by Magneto, while the X-Men were living on an island off San Francisco. However, her powers were once again broken and she was forced to wear a special suit to remain solid, until she was killed in a Breakworld plot and resurrected, her powers healed.
Following Schism, Kitty followed her old mentor Logan back to Westchester, where she co-headed the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning. She took no part in the fight between the Avengers and the X-Man over the Phoenix Force, and was devastated when Charles Xavier was killed. When the original X-Men were brought to the future, she decided to mentor them, eventually fleeing to Canada to be with Scott’s team. There, she began a relationship with long-time friend Illyana Rasputin, and the two rescued then adopted the mutant child Bo. Eventually, both teams were united once more, although the school had to be moved to Limbo to avoid the Terrigen Mist brought to earth by the Inhumans.
Points of interest:           Physical Appearance: Kitty is rather small in stature, both short and slight in frame. She has long, dark brown hair usually pulled back into a high ponytail, and deep brown eyes. When not wearing her uniform, her outfits fit largely into the simple jeans-tee-sweatshirt combo. She is usually confident in her mannerisms and behaves with purse. She isn’t afraid to take up space and give loud, inspiring speeches when she needs to.
Powers: Kitty is able to phase through material objects and elements such as fire and lightening. She does this by passing the molecules of her body through the molecules of the object in question, with the process being largely subconscious. In a similar way, she is also able to align her molecules with other objects so that she cannot pass through, which gives her the ability to walk on air. She is also able to phase other people with her, as long as she remains in physical contact with them. While intangible, her thoughts are perceived as erratic by anyone who tries to read them, and any electronic devices she phases through are instantly short-circuited. A less utilized aspect of her powers is her ability to blend into the shadows and be practically invisible.
Personality: Kitty is best described as a self-righteous, stubborn, kind, and passionate young woman. She is talkative, witty, sarcastic, and constantly trying to make light of her situation with humor. She has dedicated her life to the mutant cause and seen many friends die as a result, with this experience often lending itself to bitterness and regret. However, she is also fiercely determined to do her best by the next generation and eliminate prejudice against mutants so that others will be able to live a normal life. She is sometimes prone to bouts of insecurity, stemming mainly from body-image issues.
Skills: Kitty is a self-described genius and polymath, with prowess in physics, engineering, and computing software and hardware. She is also a  highly skilled hand-to-hand and armed martial artist, has trained in dance, and is a competent Earth and interstellar aircraft pilot, capable of speaking a wide array of Earth and alien languages.
Heritage: Kitty is a third-generation Jewish-American, her grandparents having fled Warsaw, Poland prior to the Nazi occupation. Her great aunt is known to have been killed in Auschwitz. Kitty’s father, Carmen Pryde, fought in the Vietnam War with Charles Xavier, having volunteered when he was still underage. He was divorced from her mother, Theresa Pryde, by the time Kitty was fifteen, and devoted his life to helping others in any way he could, and even when it got him in trouble with the Japanese mafia.
Canon Divergence: My Kitty diverges from canon at the point where she meets Peter Quill. On this blog, there was no romantic relationship between them and Kitty never joined the Guardians of the Galaxy in space.
What they’ve been up to recently: Kitty has recently returned from Chicago, having taken her third break from the X-Men following their war with the Inhumans. She now leads the team and heads the school now located in Central Park. Her aim is to increase mutant visibility in order to foster harmony between humans and mutants.
Where to find them: Kitty is currently operating out of New York, specifically in Central Park. However, she frequently travels around the United States and other parts of the world, answering distress calls from new mutants and battling threats to the planet.
Current plans: Currently, Kitty is adjusting to being the leader of the X-Men while juggling her responsibilities at the school and her relationships with Illyana, Bo, and other members of her mutant family. With Illyana, she is also working on expanding her abilities in order to phase through magick, which she has never been able to do before. However, she’s fearful of breaking her powers once more, and is largely keeping her experiments a secret from the rest of the team.
Desired interactions: Right now, there’s nothing specific I’m looking to write with a partner. However, I would love to explore more of Kitty’s canon relationships and do some mutant rights-related threads.
Offered interactions:            Teacher/Headmistress: Kitty is a lot of fun to writein a mentoring role, though this kind of interaction is more-or-less exclusive to mutant characters. Whether it’s guiding your character through mutant life or helping them with her powers, Kitty is a really compassionate, inspiring teacher.
Teammate: I enjoy action-orientated threads as much as dialogue-orientated ones, and this goes doubly for when the other character is a X-Men or mutant and they’re working together on some mutant-related issue. Rescuing young mutant children from terrible situations, dealing with monsters, stopping members of the new Brotherhood, or just training together in the Danger Room -- it’s all on the table.
Friend: Above all, Kitty is a great friend. She’s a great listener for when your muse is down, needs someone to talk to, or needs someone to beat their head against a wall. She’s reliable, loyal, and won’t shy away from some hard truths. But, she’s also a great person to just hang out with in general, whether your muse wants to go to a crazy nightclub or have a picnic lunch on the lawn.
Current open post/s: I don’t have any current open posts, but I welcome everyone to send in memes or chat to me about making a starter or plotting out something more in-depth.
Anything else?: I am currently working on a PhD in social psychology, am attempting to get two research papers published, and am running tutorial classes at my university. I usually set up my queue to put out one reply per day, with the queue restocked on the weekend.

More Help for Small Businesses on the Way, Says Senate
On Tuesday, April 21, the Senate passed a measure that will add about $484 billion in new funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and other small business aid introduced in the CARES Act for those impacted by the coronavirus. The House is expected to vote later this week.
The initial emergency relief program had a $349 billion cap and ran out of funding just two weeks after banks began accepting applications. Last week, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) wrote a letter to Congress advocating for additional PPP funding, as well as increased funds for the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Emergency Advance (EIDL) program.
“The PPP ran out of money in about two weeks and the EIDL was running on fumes,” said Shannon McGahn, NAR’s top federal advocate, in a statement. “These are two of the most extensive rescue programs in our nation’s history. We are hearing from brokers around the country who were able to keep their employees on the payroll because of this help and from self-employed members who have been able to keep their businesses afloat.”
“Although the rollout was a bit rocky because of the programs’ sheer size and demand, more and more banks are coming in line,” McGahn added, “and we encourage all our members who qualify to check with their lender again and keep trying. It’s worth it.”
PPP is available for struggling small businesses with fewer than 500 employees, making some brokerages and home-building firms ideal candidates. The funds can go toward payroll costs, mortgage payments, and rent and insurance—and the loan is completely forgiven, tax-free, if the borrower doesn’t fire employees or cut payroll in an eight-week period, starting when the loan is taken out.
Dean Mon, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), issued the below statement following the Senate’s announcement:
“The additional $380 billion in new small-business funding approved by the Senate is a welcome development for the thousands of home-building firms that desperately need this important government program. Many of these companies are stuck in limbo waiting for this additional funding. As Congress develops the next economic package, it needs to take additional steps to ensure broader builder eligibility under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).”
“Home building remains an essential business throughout most of the nation and ensuring land developers, multi-family property owners and the trade associations that serve the industry have access to this program must be a priority,” added Mon. “Providing sufficient access to the PPP will allow builders to keep their doors open, keep their employees on the job and continue to provide housing opportunities for all Americans during this challenging time.”
NAR also released the following guidance for REALTORS® on the PPP and EIDL:
If you’ve already applied for an EIDL: The SBA is processing applications already in their system on a first-come, first-served basis. You do not need to reapply.
If you have not already applied for an EIDL: Check back at the SBA application page once the additional funding is signed into law. The SBA will re-open applications shortly afterwards.
If you’ve already applied for a PPP loan through an SBA lender but have not been approved yet: Check with your lender to see if they are maintaining a queue of applications during the lapse or if you will need to reapply when the renewed funding comes through.
If you have not applied yet for a PPP loan through an SBA lender: Have the application form filled out and your documentation ready to provide to your lender. (For businesses with employees, have payroll documentation; for independent contractors, have your 2019 Form 1040, Schedule C, and 1099-MISC.) If you have an existing relationship with an SBA lender, you should go to that lender first once the program reopens, but be prepared to try multiple lenders, which you can find on the SBA site.
