Walnut the Crane dead at 42

Internet sensation Walnut the Crane became ill on January 2, 2024 and passed away at age 42 at her home at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) campus in Front Royal, VA. A necropsy revealed the cause of death to be renal failure. Walnut far outlived the average life expectancy for White-naped Cranes in captivity, which is 15 years. She leaves behind her husband, zookeeper Chris Crowe, with whom she had 8 offspring, including two housed at the NZCBI: daughter Brenda, age 18, and a granddaughter, age 1.
“Walnut was a unique individual with a vivacious personality,” Crowe said. “She was always confident in expressing herself, an eager and excellent dancer, and stoic in the face of life’s challenges. I’ll always be grateful for her bond with me. Walnut’s extraordinary story has helped bring attention to her vulnerable species’ plight.” (x)
White-naped Cranes are native to Mongolia, northeast China and southeast Russia, wintering in the Korean DMZ, Japan, and China. Habitat loss to agriculture, development, and ongoing droughts are factors in their decline, leaving them classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Walnut was an important contributor to efforts to restore the species.
Edit: for those unaware, I refer to the zookeeper as her husband because Walnut was imprinted on humans, meaning she considered him her mate and performed displays and courtship for him. As a zookeeper he was responsible for artificially inseminating the bird. This and more was the source of her viral fame.

In the Animal News today; Walnut the White-naped Crane has passed naturally of old age. She contributed eight chicks to her species’ survival.
I hope Chris Crowe will recover from losing his crane wife with time

hi i wanted to gather all the minute details and things i've always wanted to know about scoops mostly for reference for myself but also fun <3
the ocean of canonical flavours:
☆ chocolate, strawberry, rainbow sherbet, coffee, vanilla, rocky road, pistachio, black walnut, chocolate chip, mint chocolate chip, french vanilla, chocolate - vanilla swirl, peppermint stick, butter pecan, cherries jubilee, mocha nut + the flavour of the month is salted caramel
☆ divided into 8 flavours per case
☆ additionally: erica asks for a sample of a peanut butter - chocolate swirl flavour, there's a couple different examples shown of an orange-coloured sherbet (probably mango...?) and the uss butterscotch assumedly uses a butterscotch ice cream

☆ OTHER stores canonically within starcourt that i feel are significant... -> tape world, radioshack, the game player, time-out arcade. and claire's <3 the camera repair store also sells film and the gap advertises levi's + the shoe store upstairs advertises nike's (steve bait)
☆ the candy crane and plush toy crane machine next to the carousels just outside the store all cost 25c :)
☆ the employee's breakroom is called the captain's quarters...

the vet!Ratchet and mer!Drift ask made me think of "walnut the crane". She's a whote naped crane that basically mated with one of the zookeepers.
I can imagine Ratchet learning the ways of the mer to artificially inseminate drift. Or Maybe even naturally inseminate him
I was lowkey thinking of Walnut when I wrote that one actually... It's such a good dynamic for monsterfucking
Drift as an endangered mer species, absolutely refusing any other mers they try to bring in to mate with him...
He was rescued from a fishing operation heavily injured, and at first he was extremely distrustful of all the workers. But when vet Ratchet spent every day at his side until he recovered, of course Drift slowly fell in love
Which is now. a problem. *vague worldbuilding time* Mer protection laws are relatively new and still super fucked, and so there needs to be proof they maintain living populations in nature for mers that won't survive in the wild anymore (like Drift) to be able to stay at mer sanctuaries
Tldr it's very important that that certain species of mer are having merpups. Drift is one of them. Drift only wants Ratchet's pups, which no one is even sure is possible, because usually people sticking their dicks in mermaids do not live through the experience. So they would go the artificial insemination route first...
Drift trying to grind against Ratchet's array as soon as he steps into the shallow treatment tank... his spike is extended, and his puffy slit is burning for Ratchet. His long, powerful tail makes him over twice as tall as Ratchet from head to fintip. He tries so hard to be aware of his strength as he thrashes and whines when Ratchet starts fingering his swollen hole
Once Drift has been properly fucked stupid on his hand, Ratchet inserts a blunt syringe and fills Drift with transfluid, donated from another facility (that's having almost the exact same problem as them). It's not the most efficient method, but it is the least distressing... that just means they'll have to repeat it a few times, until Drift starts growing heavy with pups :)
