Hey so I was going through the Shadows of New York tag and found this gem

And I just had to let everyone know this is actually a reference to this 1992 thriller!

Oof, it's been over a year I think since I played Shadows of New York, and wow, that confrontation with Dakota comes off as so bizarre still. When I saw her in Julia's clothes, I thought Dakota was being very cute: like she missed Julia so much she wore her stuff. As the scene went on, I realized the devs wanted me to find Dakota's behavior creepy....but much of that creepiness hinged on me, the player, having watched Single White Female. Neither Julia nor Dakota explain the reference or that Hedy's actions are sinister. When I grew too puzzled, I paused the game, looked up Single White Female, and had to read the whole plot summary to understand why Julia was flying off the handle.

I love to include many allusions in my writing, but a big learning process in my career is how to use them effectively. Ya gotta put them in when it makes sense to...when it's realistic a character would know it...in an unobtrusive way so that people who haven't read/watched/devoured the referenced material don't get left out.... Shadows of New York's Dakota confrontation scene is a great example of how not to do it. I seriously doubt the Draw Distance writers wanted to throw their players out of the story during the climax. Let alone send them off to Wikipedia to read a plot summary from a movie that came out three decades ago.

Today I started to save lovely comments and messages people send me about my art and about my characters. I always want to think badly about myself, I was raised that way. So I'm saving nice things to remind myself that my art is loved, my characters are loved.I bring something good to people. And oh my God! there are SO many sweet things! Thank you all for so much love to my creations!! I've never,NEVER had such a productive years with personal arts.It's a long post, but I wanted to throw together big pictures I did purely for fun, all with characters from New Orleans chronicle we had. The pictures is mixed, but I can see so clearly how much I grew up, thanks to the love and determination and desire to show bits of these character's stories. I dearly love every and all characters and even tho the actual game is finished, I hope to continue on drawing past and future scenes from their lives and un_lives. It gives me purpose as an artist, drawing what you love is what I started drawing for. Anyway, not to make it super long post..Thank you all for watching me, supporting me, commenting me. Love <3 PS. Often I look at the very first illustration for this chronicle to see how much I changed and grew up. It really makes me happier.

Jan Pieterzoon, he's at number five since the best I've read about him was in the epilogue that wasn't by Gherbod Fleming and gave me a ton of feels. I really like the idea of a Ventrue that actually believes in the noble oblige the clan is meant to have, and the struggles he has to deal with his feeding restriction and having a sire that constantly mindwipes him and tricked him into destroying things that could've protected the world from Gehenna and how angry he was when he found out the truth. I have to admit I like his potential that is expanded on in fandom rather in canon XD

Lettow Kaminsky from vtm: nightroad, I really enjoyed Lettow as a character and romance option in nightroad, it was refreshing to have a Camarilla Prince who was both a Gangrel and also trying his damnest to do right by those he was responsible for, even when things are falling apart or when things get harder and harder to be morally good. Of course he isn't morally perfect, he still has some shadiness but that'd what you need in order to survive in the World of Darkness, though he tries to be fair especially to the courier. Also his annoyed filled banter with Juilan is really funny! XD

D’Angelo from vtm: Coteries of New York and Shadows of New York

D' Angelo was one of the higlights of my first playthrough of Coteries and honestly for me his story was one of the strongest in that game. I love that he narrates like an old noir detective(though in this case its him narrating like the main character of his novel) and he really does try to do the right thing even when it can backfire on him and remade himself to help cope with his unlife. He really is interesting and would love to see more of him in later games or in the New York by Night web series.

Ecaterina the Wise more specially from Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption, although her place in vtm canon is really interesting too. I found Ecaterina an really interesting character in seeing how a person's idealism can take them into some messy places, and her understandable hatred does leave her to joining the Sabbat(which at the beginning weren't so bad but got worse as time went on). She definitely has the scholarly mindset of the older Brujah while also having the passion of the younger Brujah. In the dark ages parts of Redemption she was a sort of good sire to Christof (despite embracing him against his will and all) but its interesting how the years had changed her so much where to the point when they reunite in the modern nights, (we find out in the 'Bad ending' of Shadows of New York) she has Christof break Hana's jaw so she could be Ecaterina's double which is all kinds of screwed up.

Julia Sowinski from vtm: shadows of new york

Julia is one of the most interesting and relatable protagonists I've played in a vtm game where you don't get to design your character. From her depression, her struggles in the world of darkness and her slowly troubled relationship with her human girlfriend Dakota, I couldn't help but feel for her and relate a little as well. I also enjoyed her sarcastic humor and her observations of the world around her, her interactions with the other characters, her banter and relationship with Qadir al-Asmai was the most enjoyable. There is a lot I could say but that would be getting into too many spoilers and I still need to play through the 'Good ending'

Phew, that was tricky but I hope this answered your question and this was fun to think through why I like each character a lot.

2. what was your original concept for this character? how did playing them change that concept?

Ezira Gryphonsbane of the Thunderweaver: I really wanted to play a Leonin, and I love my rangers, so I wanted to think about what would make a Leonin a ranger. I decided that the Thunderweaver pride were on the smaller side, so they were dark ambushers and not strict overpowerers. She's so far the closest to my original concept! She got the epithet Gryphonsbane when she one-shotted a griffin.

Rhaelara Rynwalsdottir: Same as Ezira, this was just a character combination I always wanted to play (aasimar paladin). Some of her backstory came from the DM spinning a wheel, like her being the lesser apprentice of Van Richten, and the rest sort of flowed naturally!

M'nish Blacktooth: My beloved. Blacktooth is a gnoll swashbuckler who came about because I did a funny Texas accent and wanted to make my friends laugh. Her backstory at any given time is what I consider the most entertaining.

Katya Volkova: My Blades in the Dark character. I was looking at the character concepts and thought "whoa, a religious academic from a horseback archery community, sounds like Huntress!" In practice, she's if Yelena Belova became a history professor.

Harper Lowell: Kate Bishop is one of my favorite Marvel characters of all time, so of course when I joined a Masks game, I picked the Beacon. I decided Harper was the high school hockey captain who came to the conclusion that team sports and superheroing are kinda just the same!

Briar Blackfang: This is one of my favorite concepts. Briar's from the Root RPG, which is kinda like Redwall. One of the factions are the birds, and I decided that because wolves and ravens hunt together, Briar (a timber wolf) used to be the personal ranger of one of the Eyrie monarchs before the war. I did not anticipate how socially awkward she'd be until later.

Dylan Hartley: I had been wanting to play a VtM game for so long. Gangrel is my favorite of the clans, so I did a ton of research into their lore and decided to make a street rat with a shitty hardcore band, fitting the self-sufficient folk hero type. What i did *not* expect until the game started was that her relationship with her sire would be the closest thing to healthy that VtM relationships get!

Dakota Broward: Ah, my newest blorbo. He started as an NPC in an Urban Shadows game, a demon hunter who befriended my Imp. When that DM and I switched to City of Mist, I revamped him as the Rift (reincarnation / channel for) Sir Gawain.

Rhaelara: "Gods, I hope not!"

Blacktooth: "Hell yeah, ain't no one like me!"

Katya: "Of course. I am distinguished in all manner of things."

Harper: "I mean, I kind of think not being special makes me more special, you know?"

Briar: "No."

Dylan: "Insofar as the whole vampire thing goes, yeah, probably. Lyra certainly seems to think so."

Dakota: "By the definition, yes. I'm the only one who bears my specific burden."

broskis i kinda wanna translate PD into vampires. i know in my bones if i cracked open their mm sheets i could fully translate them to vtm sheets. because i already know that william is hecata/giovanni because duh. dakota is gangrel, he keeps collecting pets. no other option fits so perfectly my baby is a gangrel. vyncent might get shoved into malkavian because he would NOT be a fishmalk but boy is coded to all hell, and i dont want to make the greats be a diablerie after effect. hes just plural and got Snatched by a malk. and ashe is a tremere my boy is a fucking WIZARD.

Hi friend! Thank you for playing this game with me. I kept this ask as a talisman all yesterday, knowing I would have time to answer it today! :D

I ship all of these! Not in the "makes brain go brrrr" way, but more in the "my friends really like this and I love watching my friends experience joy" way. A perk of having such creative tumblr friends is I get to frolic and ramble in all the worlds they write down and make art of.

1)What made you ship it?

Nod Squad OT3 caught my attention because like, what do you mean there are actual canon friends in the World of Darkness? Who are they? What are doing? Then, uh, Beckett happened. XD I started liking Beckett/Sascha largely because of your skyline series, and hours of chatting on Discord. After playing Bloodlines, I wasn't in the mood for Nines/LaCroix to do anything besides barbecue Ventrue Tower. Then, the sheer amount of meta, fic, and art convinced me. And of course Ming Xiao comes too.

Julia/Dakota is a little different. I ship it because they're canon in the game. It would take A LOT for me to designate a canon lesbian romance as NOTP. [spoiler] When Dakota put on Julia's clothes, I thought it was the classic romantic thing of wearing a partner's clothes because one misses them. Dakota mentions she misses Julia earlier, even. Then I was puzzled on how they both have the same trouser AND blouse size (and wondered if it was simply storytelling convenience or sexism thinking all attractive woman are one shape). Then I mentally chided Julia for being angry way out of proportion; then I remembered compassion and reminded myself of Julia's ambient stress levels. I didn't get the scene was meant to be like, sinister or relationship-breaking until the game ended and I looked up Single White Female's ending.[end spoiler]

2) What are your favorite things about the ship?

Reverse order. I love Julia and Dakota's color symmetry and the fact they exist. Nines/LaCroix is like watching one of those videos of a great ape recognizing themself in a mirror (the melting of anger to wonder, tenderness). Beckett/Sascha because I love a recovery. Nod Squad for the banter and the humor.

3) Is there an unpopular opinion you have on the ship?

The tumblr VtM fandom regulars are like, 2 people per continent on Earth, so IDK if it's possible to have an obvious unpopular shipping opinion. I guess LaCroix/Nines numbers are up there, but it's defo not as popular as shipping an OC with a Bloodlines character. I will say that I wanted all the Shadows of New York Steam achievements, but I didn't want to play the Good Ending, so I had my rather Lasombra-like friend play it for me. XD
