Mafia!Konig and his mob wife
You live on a strict schedule. At 5 AM, you would roll over to the side and feel your husband's hand on your waist, heavy as he didn't want to wake up and let go of you. Police department of Vienna long forgotten - you alone can hold the most infamous criminal in the country in check. Keeping him from doing the crimes by simply being too damn adorable - if you're lucky and he spends the night, he would always cling to your side, not wanting to get up and waste some bullets on some sorry fucks. At 5:30, he would eventually get up, pushing your sleepy form to return to bed. You would refuse, of course, wanting to walk him out. Clinging to the illusion of being domestic with him - like he doesn't smell like blood every morning. Like he wouldn't just send you flowers covered in someone's intestines to get your day going. You would have breakfast together at 6 Am, and he would finally go to oversee the nightly operations. Drugs moving around, guns, people. Never allowing you to leave the mansion without him or his most trusted allies, you are all but kidnapped. You gave up on trying to escape a long time ago - the memories of the crowbar landing on your legs over and over are too vivid in your head. It gets easier when you have a routine. When your days are filled with wine hase and some decadent pleasures that you have time for. Sometimes, you work on the documents for his legal business. Some restaurants and shady tourist-related things. Private tours for people who want to get an easy cocaine kick and your personal tiny business that loses thousands every month, but you keep to keep it since Konig doesn't want you to go crazy from boredom. He doesn't visit you too often - you thought he had someone else at first, before you knew what he was doing for living. You still miss the time he was hiding his real job. When he wouldn't dare to kiss you while he was still smelling of blood, while his gun was still pressed against a guy's head. You visit him in his office sometimes, when he actually bothers to stay in the office. He is always awkward when you visit, shuffling all the documents away so the room would look more presentable.

Some of my favourite quotes from David Benson's 'Hunt v Lauda'
'He was nursing a toy yellow-eyed gorilla which made alarming noises and clapped a pair of cymbals attached to its hand.
"Whats with the gorilla?"
James looked tired. "It's called smiler. Alistair and Teddy gave it to me to celebrate my championship."
Teddy smiled benignly: "The gorilla was not very popular in first-class lounge I'm afraid."
"No," said James, "and they wouldn't let me blow my whistle either." He produced a police whistle and blew it.' - p7
"When we boarded the plane, he (James Hunt) insisted on joining mechanics in touring class until the lights were turned down for passengers to sleep." - p8
"Niki had always wanted to marry Mariella but she had refused to do so until he had become world champion." - p21
"The unsuspecting young actress Marlene Knaus was going to endure a trial that few women, even with a tremendously experienced and well-founded background, could have endured." - p21
"I telephoned James Hunt in Johannesburg where he is preparing for the South African Grand Prix. He told me, "I have been in daily contact with Susy and am fully informed about what is going on. I wouldn't stop her getting a divorce. I am trying to help her as much as I can so that she makes the right decisions. Obviously if she wanted to come back to me, I would help her do that." - p40
"I walked out of the dinning-room to an annexe alongside it, and sitting in the corner with a lady I didn't know was Niki Lauda; he smiled and asked a Carol and me to join him for a cup of coffee. He introduced the girl alongside him very simply, "This is my lady," She was, of course, Marlene Knaus, a very beautiful girl, with her hair in a rather severe style, brushed back, and a bun on the top of her head. We had a long chat about seat belts - both were empathetically in favour (that evening the house of commons in the UK were debating on making seatbelts in cars compulsory) - but the important thing was that I established a friendly relationship with Marlene when other people on the racing circuit cold-shouldered her, thinking she was merely some local pick-up. In fact, she and Niki were planning to get married as soon as they flew back from South Africa." - p44
"The main topic of conversation was the break-up of the long relationship between Niki Lauda and Mariella. Helen (Stewart) offered, with the best possible intentions, to get in touch with both Mariella and Niki is necessary to heal the breach. Having seen how close Niki and Marlene were in South Africa, I doubted if this were possible. As it turned out, a day after we had our discussion in Nina's home, Niki went quietly to a register office near Vienna and married Marlene." - p47
"He tried awfully hard not to hurt me." - (Susy about James) - p58
"James was standing right alongside me. Tears welling in his eyes. "It's stupid," he said, "It does not affect the performance of the car or make it any faster. Not even the Ferrari team protested and they were the ones who have the most to win..." - p62
"It was in triumph, therefore, that Hunt, six weeks before his 29th birthday, left for Britain in preparation for the John Player Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. With good humour and in high spirits, he took part in an event before the race and revealed another facet in his talents. It was at the Albert Hall at the Grand Prix Night of the Stars, a concert in aid of the Graham Hill Memorial Fund. The hall was packed with evening-suited celebrities who had paid up to £500 for a private box. Hunt was introduced by astronomer Patrick Moore who had just done a soft-shoe shuffle. Suddenly, Moore reached for a trumpet left behind on the bandstand by Chris Barber, who had done an earlier turn. "You're supposed to be good at blowing your own trumpet," he said, "so try this one." The audience dutifully laughed expecting a knockabout comedy turn. But Hunt took the trumpet, the studio band started to play and Hunt's clear, clean notes echoed through the vast auditorium. It was a memorable moment. When the audience realised that Hunt was playing for real, they roared their approval and then sat in silence as James plaved like a professional. Hunt's brother, Peter told me later: "I had a hell of a job convincing the BBC, who were recording the show, that James really was a good enough trumpet player to perform on TV. He learned to play at about 12 or 13 when he was at Wellington. He was in the school orchestra and the school band and played solo at concerts. Stuart Turner, Public Affairs Director of Ford of Britain, had a box at the Albert Hall. He turned to me after Hunt had finished his solo and said: "Now I have seen everything: James Hunt playing the trumpet at the Albert Hall we'll have Niki Lauda doing a comedy act next." - p73-4
"Niki himself, having almost killed himself in a first-lap accident there in 1974, has always campaigned against the Nurenburgring. He argued that the 1976 German Grand Prix should be switched to the Hockenheim Ring, a purpose-built circuit with outstanding safety facilities installed after the death there of Jim Clark in 1968. But Lauda was reviled by the Germans for his attempt. In practise at Nürburgring spectators displayed a huge poster of Lauda and his car. Across it was written, 'Lauda 20 kilometres per hour. Aus.' Ring bystanders are hard on anyone threatening the thrill of the race." - p80
"Sunday's race day was altogether depressing from the start. The young American driver Brett Lunger had heard the night before that his father had died unexpectedly in the United States and Brett decided to stay and go on with the race before returning home. It was to be a vital decision in the saving of Niki Lauda's life." - p81
"Jackie had a remarkable story to tell that Niki's agents had telephoned him soon after the crash and asked him to appear at a promotion for a new line of jeans which were being marketed in Niki's name. Jackie refused, saying he would only appear with Niki's permission. Niki was telephoned and they were told that he was determined to be there himself." - p86-7
"What would the situation be if Niki was fit to drive and Ferrari still wouldn't come to the track?" I asked Alastair, without hesitation he replied: "We will lend him a car so he and James can fight it out." - p89
"Then Niki arrived in his Jaguar with Marlene and Willi Dungl, his masseur/confidant, the man responsible for building Niki up physically in preparation for the race. There was a last-minute panic when it was discovered that Dungl had left his passport back at the house but he had an identity card and Niki knew that with Ferrari influence we would have no trouble getting Willi into Italy. Niki insisted on carrying out all the check-out procedures himself and we made a beautiful take off from Salzburg Airport." - p95
"At one point I was asked if I wanted to see a priest. So I said: "OK." He came in, and gave me my last rites - crossed my shoulder - and said "Goodbye My friend". I nearly had a heart attack! I wanted someone to help me live in this world, and not pass into the next." - p98
"I was watching his wife Marlene's eyes as she protectively, solicitously, studied her husband. She seemed almost proud of his scarred features." - p101
"A beautiful elegant grey/green-eyed young woman by the name of Marlene Knaus enjoyed life of a promising screen actress and model. A member of one of the most respected families in Austria she fitted easily into the jet set world of show business. She moved easily too in the rarefield world of medicine in which her grandfather was a renowned gynaecologist and in the artistic circles into which she was born as the daughter of a famous painter." - p101
"I used to smoke maybe one or two cigarettes a day, but from the time of the accident I have become a chain smoker. I know that this is not good for my health but it helps me through the crisis." Niki does not smoke and he says that this fact helped him recover from his lung injuries, but he does not reprove Marlene for smoking." - p102
"Marlene is a delightfully warm person. Her handshake is firm. Her eyes are steady and constant. They are the eyes of a woman who could inspire a man to great things, and she likes to touch the person that she is talking to. She looks at her husbands scarred face and gently strokes it." - p103
"Hunt, who had trotted through the driving rain along the length of the pits to salute the supreme courage of his world title rival Niki Lauda." - p104
"I just wish there bad been no accident, no disqualifications, no aggrevation, and Niki and I were fighting it out fair and square on the track. After what Niki has achieved, he deserves that at least. What Ferrari have done is to devalue the world championship and to cloud Niki's brave recovery. His recovery is absolutely amazing and he really is fit again." - p125
"His wife Marlene was happy with his decision. She had said earlier; "When he got into the car and drove away, I wanted to throw myself in front of it and stop him." - p140
"All Hunt knew was that he had to pass everything in sight. It took him two laps to catch and pass Alan Jones in the Surtees. Now he was fourth. Almost on the same bend he came upon Regazzoni in the Ferrari. Would the Swiss Italian let him through or hold him back? Ostentatiously Rega moved over and waved Hunt through ar a point where the Ferrari pit could clearly see his manoeuvre. As Rega passed his pit he gave them the two finger sign to show his disapproval that he had been dropped from the team for 1977." - p142

Naples a l'époque de Napoléon : Rebell et la lumières du golfe
Naples in the time of Napoleon. Rebell and the light of the Gulf
Naples in the time of Napoleon. Rebell and the light of the Gulf restores the atmosphere and image of the city in the years from 1808 to 1815, when Joachim Murat and his consort Caroline Bonaparte, the youngest of Napoleon's three sisters, were the much-loved rulers of Naples. This was a period of progress and renewed splendour for the kingdom, marked by extraordinary social, economic and urban transformations and particular attention towards the territory. The culture of the Murats and their modern taste acquired in Paris gave the arts a considerable boost, dividing their time between the official royal palaces of Naples and Caserta and their favourite private residence in Portici.
Patrons of the great portrait painters, Joachim and especially Caroline showed a particular sensitivity for veduta and landscape painting, calling French masters in the genre to their court, Special protection was reserved for the Viennese artist Joseph Rebell, who, along with other specialists in veduta painting, features prominently in this exhibition. Rebell spent several periods of time in Italy between 1812 and 1824, particularly in Naples.
Views of the city, its gulf and magnificent surroundings were his favourite subjects, even after leaving Naples in 1815, fuelling in Europe the myth of the unique nature of this enchanted land celebrated by the painters of the Grand Tour. His training and success are evoked and set against the backdrop of the cosmopolitan Neapolitan scene between the end of the 18th century and the second decade of the 19th century, marked by the presence of numerous travellers and landscape painters who profoundly renewed the vision of reality.
The Murat family itself is also a protagonist of the exhibition, with the presence of numerous portraits, paintings and sculptures bearing witness to the important role it played at that time.
The works are on loan from prestigious organisations, including the Belvedere of Vienna, partner of the exhibition, other major Austrian museum, such as the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and the Austrian National Library, and French museums such as the Château of Fontainebleau and Versailles.
The exhibition is curated by Sabine Grabner, Luisa Martorelli, Fernando Mazzocca and Gennaro Toscano, with the collaboration of the Institut français in Naples.

Max Ernst's "One Week of Kindness"
Which could also be called "A Week of Benevolence" - the original French being "Une semaine de bonté".
This post is a follow-up to a reblog I made, right here. Please go read this reblog first, because this post continues from all the info I placed there. If you don't go check it out first, you'll be slightly or massively confused.
I wanted to expand a bit on this fascinating piece of art, and to do so I'll use the info the Musée d'Orsay shared and put on their website when they organized an exposition of Une semaine de bonté.
An expo that deserves its own mention due to how exceptional it was. It was a 2008-2009 exposition of the original collages of Max Ernst the booklets were reproductions of. It was a grand world-tour that started in the Albertina palace of Vienna and ended in the Musée d'Orsay of Paris, passing by Brühl, Hamburg and Madrid. Why was it such a big deal? Because this was the second exposition of Ernst' work - the only other exposition of Une semaine de bonté's collages was in 1936, in the Museo de Arte Moderno of Madrid, just before the Spanish Civil War. It had been organized by Paul Eluard, who loved Ernst' work, but five of the illustrations couldn't be part of the exposition - due to being deemed too "indecent" or "blasphemous". And since this date, the works had never seen the light of day anymore, being preserved in private collections... It explains why the second exposition was such a big deal.
A few more sources for this collage-work I forgot to talk about: Beyond the general category of covers and illustrations of investigation stories/crime novels/polar tales, we also know that Ernst used illustrations of Sade's novels, the caricatures of Grandville, and the illustrations of Fantomas.
Tumblr media
As with typical surrealist work, Une semaine de bonté offers a work of onirism that transcends the limits and categorizations imposed by society, by science, by our very conception of reality, and rather offers nonsensical visions and extraordinary wonders. It was the third "roman-collage" of Ernst, after "La femme 100 têtes" of 1929 and "Rêve d'une petite fille qui voulut entrer au Carmel" (1930). Throughout the illustrations, we find many references to the Bible, to famed legends, to fairy tales, to Greco-Roman mythology, but mixed with Ernst' recurring and favorite themes. More precisely, his strong rejections and dislikes: his rejection of the Church, his hatred of the bourgeoisie, his dislike of the traditional family, his refusal of patriotism...
Because Une semaine de bonté is actually a denunciation work, a great critique, a satirical caricature of the French society of the 1930s. Ernst superposes, subverts and reverses all sorts of stereotypical and cliches depictions, of either the "good society", or of the evil, the crime, the monster. Now, of course, there is no actual "real" or "good" story for this work. It is open to interpretation and everybody has to and must find their own meaning in it - as with all proper surrealist work... But there is still strong themes that form recurring motifs, and a message Ernst wasn't so subtle about.
Tumblr media
The satirical, ironical, cynical, biting nature of the work can be read in the very title, which plays on two levels. One, on a Christian level: "Seven capital elements" is, as I said, a parody of the "seven deadly sins/seven capital sins" ; the motif of a work centered around a week alerts that there will be numerous references to the Biblical genesis, but most importantly "One week of kindness" is a reference to "La semaine de bonté", The Week of Kindness, a 1927 association creating for social help. Tied to this subversion of typical Christan morals, ideas and values, is the second level of irony in the title: this collage-novel is called "One week of kindness"... And yet it depicts all sorts of violences and abuses. Its pages are filled with murders, tortures and natural disasters - and Ernst doesn't hesitate to subtly denounce the sensationalism of a society obsessed with depictions and illustrations of the most horrible and criminal sides of humanity.
It also is no wonder that this work was created during the 1930s. The ghosts of the World Wars are haunting this piece. On one side, Ernst was seeing with an anxious and angry eye the rise of violent nationalist movements and of brutal, discriminatory dictatorships - the very ones that would cause World War II. On the other side, Ernst was of this generation that inherited the trauma and memories of World War I, had to live with the broken and disfigured survivors of the "Great War". Ernst himself had served in the German army during the Great War (if you don't know, while Ernst was born and raised in Germany, he ended up having a triple-nationality, German, American and French). One can almost read in this book Ernst' vitriolic take on a society that distracts itself with materialism, excessive pleasures and sensationalism, in an attempt to bury the wraiths of its past, and to stay blind to the dangers ahead...
It is only by the last day of the week that the atrocities fade away, and that we return to pure oniric poetry, in a set of illustrations focusing on voluptuousness and fantasy, inviting to or glorifying freedom and dreams... Now let's take a look at the structure of the Week in more details.
Day 1: Sunday. Element: Mud. Example: The Lion of Belfort
Tumblr media
(The Lion of Belfort is a commemorative statue of the Alsacian town of Belfort in France, in homage to how the city had been assieged by the Prussians during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870)
Another Christian subversion: the week doesn't begin here on a Monday, but on a Sunday. We also see some of the games Ernst has with the Biblical Genesis not just by waking the "last" day of Genesis the first day of the week, but also by associating to Sunday (the day of rest for a God that created everything already) the day of the "mud" (understand, the primordial mud from before the world was created, the "chaos", the "primordial soup" from which the universe had to be sculpted). Not only that, but Sunday, the holiest day of the week for Christians, is filled with brutal deaths, sadistic violence and blasphemous imagery.
More precisely, this booklet/day explores the relationships between men and women, male and females. And... let's just say Ernst has a bad view of it, since all the interactions between male and female characters in this booklet can be summarized by: persecution, seduction, theft, punishment, torture, death. Since the Lion of Belfort is the recurring theme, there is a recurring character throughout the illustrations of a lion-faced man. He is always in a position of power and domination, and it is no surprise: we often see him wear military decorations, political medals or even religious symbols such as the Sacred Heart. As a result, the lion-man clearly embodies all the dominating, oppressive and violent male-dominated organizations of the time: the political world, the military and the Church.
(If you are curious, the Musée d'Orsay offered the original picture on which the one above was based. It was taken from the Mémoire de Monsieur Claude:
Tumblr media
Day two: Monday. Element: Water. Example: Water.
Tumblr media
Unlike the male-dominated first booklet, this one is filled with female figures, making it the most "feminine" of all the days. There is still a lot of violence in it - but it is not a man-made violence anymore. Rather Ernst presents the violence of nature, the brutality of natural disasters - through water, a water that is seen flooding bedrooms, destroying bridges, or drowning entire streets of Paris.
Day three: Tuesday. Element: Fire. Example: The dragon's courtyard/The court of the dragon.
Tumblr media
La Cour du Dragon, The Dragon's Courtyard is actually - or rather was - a famous street of Paris. It doesn't exist anymore, but it was in the 6th arrondissement, between today's Rue du Dragon and Rue de Rennes. This street was called as such because of a famous dragon-sculpture located at the top of one of its entrances - the dragon can still be seen at the Louvres I believe. And it is within illustrations of this "Dragon's courtyard" that the booklet begins.
The dragon is one of the recurring symbols of the booklet, with variations: dragons and snakes of all shapes and size that follow the characters around ; humans with various dragon or snake-like features ; or simply the presence of bat wings reminding of demons, sometimes counterbalanced by angelic characters with bird wings. Here, the caricature, in terms of setting and characters, clearly is of the bourgeoisie. Not only is Ernst making the world of the bourgeoisie "Hellish" by filling it with snakes, dragons, demons and flames, but he also seems to use the symbolism of the fire as a way to denote the cliche of the "passion bourgeoisie", the violence of passions, emotions and desires within the bourgeois world, leading to tragedies. (Opposing the "natural forces" of the water, here fire seems to be the human forces) It is no wonder that this booklet has a great emphasis on walls and doors, often decorated by surrealist symbols: they are here to evoke a cloistered, walled-up, compartimented world where walls and doors hide and try to restrain things such as fears, desires or dreams...
Day four: Wednesday. Element: Blood. Example: Oedipus.
Tumblr media
This booklet is entirely driven by the myth of Oedipus (that we know to have been one of the surrealists' favorite Greek myth). All the illustrations have one element or another of the legend, and keep retelling specific episodes of Oedipus' adventures. Oedipus killing his own father, the riddle of the Sphinx, or baby-Oedipus being abandoned at birth... Oedipus himself is symbolized in the collages as a bird-headed man.
One of the most famous collages of this booklet is the one that retranscribes the part of the legend that gave Oedipus his name, "swollen feet" or "swollen ankles", due to receiving a wound there as a baby. In Ernst's work, the bird-headed man (Oedipus) rather stabs in the foot a woman:
Tumblr media
Day five: Thursday. Element: Black. Example: The laughter of the rooster ; followed by "Easter Island".
Tumblr media
This is where we reach the last three days placed in one same booklet. It is also only in this last booklet that Ernst placed text, in the form of quotes or poems from other authors. This day has three quotes. In the "Laughter of the Rooster" segment, two. One from Marcel Shwob's L'Anarchie: "Those of them that are joyful sometimes rise their behind up to the sky and thow their feces at the face of other men ; than they lightly hit their bellies." Another from Schwob's Le Rire: "Laughter is probably fated to disappear." The third quote comes from the Easter Island segment, and is from Arp: "Stones are filled with entrails. Bravo. Bravo."
Here the symbols seem to again represent men or organizations of power. On one side, you have the recurring rooster - which is of course the symbol of France, and thus can be seen as a representation of the French government or French state. On the other side you have cruel and brutal men with the head or faces of the Easter Island statues, reflecting them not just being humans made of stone - but being literal "stones idols" (in the religious sense of the term, the sin of idolatry, again a Christian subversion).
Day 6: Friday. Element: Sight. Example: The inside of the sight / The interior of the view.
Tumblr media
Again, three quotes here. One from Professors O. Decroly and R. Buyse's "Les tests mentaux": "If three is greater than six, make a circle around the cross, and if water extinguishes fire, draw a line from the sceal to the candle, passing above the knife, then make a cross on the ladder." One from Paul Eluard's "Comme deux gouttes d'eau": "And to love I oppose / Already-made images / Instead of images to be made" (The text is much more poetic and punny in the original French). The final quote is from André Breton's "Le revolver aux cheveux blancs": "A man and a woman absolutely white."
Unlike the previous booklets which presented dynamic, violent, active, interactive scenes, here we are in more still, contemplative images. Symbols, visions and settings to be looked at and gazed at, as the title of the section indicates.
Final day: Saturday. Element: Unknown. Example: The key of songs (again, a pun on "The key of fields", a French expression)
Tumblr media
Only one quote: "........ / ........ / ........ / ......" from Pétrus Borel's "Was-ist-das".
For this part, the Musée d'Orsay used a quote by André Breton to explain Ernst's intentions: from the Surrealism Manifesto, "Glory to hysteria and its cohort of young, naked women sliding down the roofs. The problem of womankind is, to the world, everything there is of wonderful and troubled/murky." In this final day, we see women, always leaving a bed or bedroom or resting place, and either flying away or entering landscapes where gravity does not work. There is clearly here a work on the "clinal hysteria", and Ernst' own take on the surealists great obsession with hysteria, that they deemed to be disease, yes, but an illness that brought both freedom and inspiration. This idea of being set free is within the section's very title: "Prendre la clé des champs", "To take the key of the fields" is an expression meaning to go away (especially to go away from an oppressing or suffocating, unpleasant situation), to flee, escape, disappear (with the connotation of the fields as a vast, open space of great possibilities and endless horizon).

How rich are the principal dancers at top companies?
I know that Zakharova wears Fendi to her masterclasses in Sirius, Osipova has 4 purebred dogs (two Chow Chows, one Samoyed, and a Shar Pei-Samoyeds and Chows are expensive breeds)
Smirnova, Núñez, Salenko, and Boylston frequently travel internationally, and Boylston wears/models for Dior and other high end brands. Obratsova has English lessons and high quality toys/clothes for her daughters. Vishneva seems to have a large house with a yard/garden and a play room for Rudy. Zakharova also has a house in Vienna if I recall correctly.
Also, the fact that Novikova has 4 kids with Sarafanov tells me that they can afford to take care and raise a family.
I'm not going to speculate about the numbers as I don't have answers to those. But top-level ballet dancers can certainly do quite well for themselves. What I will point out is some other sources of wealth that you might not have considered outside of their salaries.

(CNN) — A portrait by Gustav Klimt that was unseen for almost a century is expected to fetch millions when it goes up for auction this spring.
The “Portrait of Fräulein Lieser,” thought to be one of the Austrian painter’s final works, is expected to fetch up to $54 million at a sale that has created huge excitement in the art world.
The painting had long been considered lost, according to Vienna auction house im Kinsky.
However, it has now emerged that it had been privately owned by an Austrian citizen.
“The rediscovery of this portrait, one of the most beautiful of Klimt’s last creative period, is a sensation,” the auction house said in a press statement on its website.
The intensely vivid and colorful piece had been documented in catalogues of the artist’s work, but experts had only seen it in a black and white photo.
The sitter is known to have been a member of a wealthy Austrian Jewish family who were then part of the upper class of Viennese society, where Klimt found his patrons and clients.
Nevertheless, her identity is not completely certain.
Brothers Adolf and Justus Lieser were leading industrialists in the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Catalogues of Klimt’s work state that Adolf commissioned the artist to paint his teenage daughter Margarethe Constance.
However, new research by the auction house suggests Justus’ wife, Lilly, hired him to paint one of their two daughters.
Tumblr media
The statement on the auctioneer’s website reveals that the sitter — whoever she was — visited Klimt’s studio nine times in April and May 1917.
He made at least 25 preliminary studies and most likely began the painting in the May of that year.
“The painter chose a three-quarter portrait for his depiction and shows the young woman in a strictly frontal pose, close to the foreground, against a red, undefined background. A cape richly decorated with flowers is draped around her shoulders,” the auction house said.
It added:
“The intense colors of the painting and the shift towards loose, open brushstrokes show Klimt at the height of his late period.”
When the artist died of a stroke the following February, the painting was still in his studio - with some small parts not quite finished. It was then given to the Lieser family.
Its exact fate after 1925 is “unclear,” according to the auction house.
“What is known is that it was acquired by a legal predecessor of the consignor in the 1960s and went to the current owner through three successive inheritances,” the statement said.
"The painting is to be sold on behalf of its Austrian owners, who have not been named, along with the legal successors of 'Adolf and Henriette Lieser based on an agreement in accordance with the Washington Principles of 1998,'” the auction house said.
Established in 1998, the Washington Principles charged participating nations with returning Nazi-confiscated art to their rightful owners.
Claudia Mörth-Gasser, specialist in modern art at im Kinsky, explained the situation in an email to CNN.
She said the auctioneer checked the painting’s history and provenance “in all possible ways in Austria,” adding:
“We have checked all archives and have found no evidence that the painting has ever been exported out of Austria, confiscated or looted.
But by the same token, she added:
“We have no proof that the painting has not ever been looted in the time gap between 1938 and 1945.”
"And this is the reason why we arranged an agreement between the present owner and all descendants of the Lieser family in accordance to the ‘Washington Principles,’” she said.
Klimt’s portraits of women “are seldom offered at auctions,” the press release states.
It continues:
“A painting of such rarity, artistic significance, and value has not been available on the art market in Central Europe for decades.
The painting will tour internationally ahead of the sale on April 24, stopping in Switzerland, Germany, Britain and Hong Kong."
The last portrait completed by Klimt became the most expensive artwork ever to sell at a European auction, when it fetched a staggering £85.3 million ($108.4 million) in London last year.
Depicting an unidentified female subject, “Dame mit Fächer” (Lady with a Fan) also established a new record for Klimt, outselling “Birch Forest,” which went for $104.6 million in a sale from the collection of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen in 2022.

Gustav Klimt (14 July 1862 – 6 February 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement.

If I belong to any tradition, it is the tradition which makes the masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer tell the masterpiece what to do.
- Alfred Brendel
Alfred Brendel has been a hugely respected figure on the global piano scene for as long as I can remember, and his retirement from performing in 2008 (appropriately, for an artist who has focussed on the composers of that city, in the golden hall of the Musikverein in Vienna) was met with many generous plaudits tinged with sadness at the end of a great, music-filled career; he had been performing for some 60 years. He preferred not to continue to perform until his faculties or physical health deteriorated. So, there was no farewell tour, just a single concert, and the manner of Brendel’s retirement is perhaps typical of an artist who is intensely self-contained and a very private man.
It takes a lot of imagination to bring a work alive but it is on the terms of the compositions and not on the terms of showing off. It is not possible without you, but I am responsible to the composer and particularly to the piece – Alfred Brendel
He is a musician whose intellectual curiosity and rigour has continually fuelled his understanding and appreciation of the music he plays. He is a great researcher and autodidact, an eloquent writer, who pursues parallel interests in art, literature, poetry and philosophy which undoubtedly feed his musical landscape. He was one of the first pianists of the modern era to perfect “intellectual” music making, and embraced the model of the thinking musician rather than one driven by emotion. For some, this has resulted in playing which is rather cool; Brendel may not be a risk-taker in performance, but his greatness perhaps lies in his impeccable taste and musical integrity, founded on a very deep understanding of the music in all its structure, nuance and variation, and the expressive effect of these formal qualities.
Alongside this, his evident affection for the music he plays enhances our own experience and appreciation of it. A communicator in his craft, he always manages to convey mood, be it wit and humour in Haydn, rhetoric and despair in Beethoven, or the bittersweet nostalgia of late Schubert. (Perhaps one of Brendel’s greatest achievements has been to raise the profile of Franz Schubert, a composer who, without Brendel’s, advocacy would probably still be regarded as the poor relation to Beethoven.)
He has avoided the usual channels to success with a stubborn wish to carve his own career path, avoiding the aura of celebrity which surrounds other artists, and allowing his musical development to mature at his pace and on his own terms. Thus, his reputation is almost entirely built upon his impeccable playing rather than the effect of marketing or powerful record companies.
It is the Viennese masters - Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert - with whom Brendel feels the greatest kindship and to whom he has paid the most scrupulous attention, but it is worth observing that he started his career in the 1950s with notable performances of Prokofiev (Piano Concerto n°5), Stravinsky (Petrushka), Mussorgsky (Pictures of an Exhibition), and, in the sixties, Chopin.
As for those composers with whom he is now most closely associated, when one considers the huge variety and complexities of their writing, his repertoire seems very broad indeed: Haydn’s Piano Sonatas, the complete piano sonatas of Mozart and Beethoven, not to mention his Piano Variations, Concertos,  and Cello Sonatas; Schubert’s Piano Sonatas; Schumann’s Piano Concerto, Kreisleriana, the Fantaisie op. 17, Fantasiestücke, Kinderszenen.
Then there are his acclaimed recordings of Liszt – the Concertos, Totentanz, Malediction, Années de pèlerinage, Harmonies poétiques et religieuses; plus works by Brahms, Busoni, Berg, Schoenberg. On top of all that, between 1958 and 1964 Brendel became the first pianist to record the complete piano works of Beethoven.
He was made an Honorary KBE in 1989 for his “outstanding services to music in Britain”, awarded the Légion d’Honneur in 2004, received the highest rank in the Order of Merit of the German Federal Republic in 2007, and holds honorary degrees from the universities of Oxford, Yale, Exeter and Dublin.
He is a recipient of the Hans von Bülow medal of the Berlin Philharmonic and was made an Honorary Member of the Wiener Philharmoniker in 1998, an honour conferred on only two other pianists, Emil von Sauer and Wilhelm Backhaus, since this orchestra’s foundation in 1842. Alfred Brendel has begun giving illustrated lectures at musical institutions and universities around the world on musical subjects and issues that have always been central to his own insatiable interpretative quest.
His farewell concert took place with the Vienna Philharmonic on December 18, 2008, which was recently voted one of the 100 greatest cultural moments of the last ten years by The Daily Telegraph.

🔥 the make up discourse
US tour has the WORST makeup out of the running replica productions. It doesn't suit many actors' faces, and while it can be colorful, it does not read as feline nearly as much as some of the other productions. The big bushy human eyebrows are an eyesore, and combined with the updated choreo which is very hiphop influenced instead of emphasizing smooth motions and ballet like the old choreo, you do not get the impression nearly as strongly that they are actually cats on stage. It feels like people dressed like cats just walking around. There is no suspension of disbelief.
The UK redesigns are Good. Not Great, but Good!! I love the overall shapes, god bless those eyebrows, but I agree the colors are too muted in some instances. On some cats the muted aspect still works well, like for Alonzo. People say it looks muddy but I think it makes him look quite sweet. It softens his edges so to speak and indicates his private vulnerability. I miss the gold on Deme but at the same time it's very much a slay. BEST current Munkustrap makeup, even though the wig still isn't to my liking.
Oasis is the #1 for makeup right now. It's bright and colorful without looking clownish or out of place, and it feels like every performer is allowed to add their own flair and change it to suit their needs. More productions need to do that. Not everyone has the same facial features and people should be allowed to do what looks best on them. It's fun to look at and "traditional" in the replica sense, which is what I'm looking for.
But if it were still running Vienna would beat them all.

Josef Lackner (1931-2000) undoubtedly was one of the most significant postwar architects in Tyrol, Austria’s mountainous and equally bluff as well as beautiful state. Lackner’s character somewhat reflected these characteristics in his uncompromising defense of his architecture, led polemically but also precise and without vanity. Accordingly it is hardly surprising that he never received public commissions and made his own way with private clients and the Catholic church. For the latter he designed the, in the mean time demolished, youth center „Kennedy-Haus“ and the singular Emmaus Church in Völs and the no less fascinating Konzilsgedächtniskirche in Vienna. In writing and in his buildings the architect always underscored veracity and inventiveness, the will to make a leap forward with every project, aspects of his work that also come to life in the present monograph: “Josef Lackner”, published in 2003 by Pustet and edited by Architekturzentrum Tirol, collects some 100 projects by the architect as well as texts about numerous topics ranging from urbanism to the architect’s self-conception. Browsing the restrainedly designed book the ingenuity of Lackner’s architecture becomes evident: often hardly to decipher his spatial figures ultimately are individually defined and tightly knit into a consistent, complex and self-evident whole.
The precise work catalogue, consistently illustrated with photos, plans and sections, offers the reader a tour d’horizon of Lackner’s highly individual oeuvre and underscores the singularity of this architect. Warmly recommended!

The Ballroom inside Liechtenstein City Palace in Vienna, Austria. The top two floors of the City Palace have one of the best Baroque grand staircases in Vienna. In the staterooms, Baroque stucco ceilings with the opulent neo-Rococo interior, the original furnishings, precious silk hangings and the refined parquet floors by Michael Thonet's form a harmonious whole and offer insights into past epochs. Selected artworks of the Biedermeier and Classicism periods from the private art collection of Prince von und zu Liechtenstein can be seen on tours of the Palace. Construction of the Liechtenstein City Palace began in 1691 on the instruction of Dominik Andreas Graf Kaunitz to designs by Enrico Zuccalli. In 1694, Prince Johann Adam Andreas I. of Liechtenstein had the construction completed by Domenico Martinelli, who created the first monumental Baroque portal in Vienna on the front facing Bankgasse. Prince Alois II. von Liechtenstein had the palace remodeled in the style of the "Second Rococo" between 1836 and 1847.
