There’s something about an underwater kiss scene that just hits me on a visceral level.

I’m often overwhelmed by the world, the sensory stimulus, being perceived/looked at, and also my constant anxieties and responsibilities yet whenever I’m underwater I always feel somewhat freed (not so much in open water though.)

The weightlessness. The way sounds become lesser and muffled. Vision is obscured. The way it becomes a place where I become my own focus. When I feel like I’m one second away from the weight of the world crushing me completely and I go underwater and am temporarily freed from my burdens.

I think that’s why underwater kiss scenes are so impactful to me. In those seconds they get to leave the world behind and their realities shrink down to just a place with just the two of them. They can leave their burdens and responsibilities behind on the waters surface. A place where they can feel somewhat protected from others eyes. The security the water provides them. They’re temporarily freed from the outer burdens and get to experience the kiss in a more freeing way. It allows a deeper connection, communication without interference.

here is my submission for this week’s @galladrabbles prompt by @michellemisfit ! I love this one and had a few ideas, but here is the one I landed on!

“Come on, gimme fucking motivation or somethin’,” Mickey lays on the bench, Ian standing above him, hands resting on the 225lb bar.

“Shit, I dunno… just gotta fuckin’ do it,” he stutters, “I’m here to help but doubt you’ll need it,” he winks.

“Thanks,” Mickey scoffs.

“Okay……I’ll finally give you that underwater blowie” he whispers, eyes rolling.

Mickey hastily grabs the bar, “Fuckin’ deal.”

“Jesus, Mick…did that shit like it was nothin’!” he yells after Mickey lifts it with ease.

Yes, I am still thinking about My Journey to You constantly so here's a list of things I did not expect this drama to include

microexpressions. The way the camera lingers on every complex little weird emotional moment these characters are having. didi's face when gong shangjue feeds shangguan qian. gong shangjue in the hall of the elders. every silent conversation between yun weishan and shangguan qian. for that matter, every silent conversation between gong ziyu and jin fan. the emotional turmoil is always front and center and that's how I like it.

actual voices. all the dialogue is captured on set, so the actors are allowed to do things like interrupt each other, speak quietly, WHISPER so we get scenes like the one where yuanzhi says "what are your orders, gege?" except he's crazy person whispering when he says it and you just know there's murder in the air. IT'S GOOD. (there are also at least 2 scenes where there was clearly some kind of on-set audio problem and they had to clean it up in post and just barely succeeded, and I really appreciate that commitment to NOT dubbing over literally any of the audio)

cameras and lighting. there's real cameras in there, they move across great distances and follow the actors around the room and utilize depth of field and even go underwater sometimes. plus it's mostly filmed in a real-ass location so the lighting is soft and natural instead of washed out by studio floodlights. IMAGINE. everyone's cheekbones are looking GOOD in this one.

relatedly they do the water scenes with REAL WATER. something you'd never think to clarify but here we are in cdramaland!!! it's real water!!!

i think the cut boyfriends line is very sweet and endearing both the line itself and ed’s reaction (ed’s reaction was actually what got me the most he’s so silly) but also i’m ok that it was cut.

when writing shows that are hyper aware of their audiences there’s a fine balance between adding fun fanservice and adding too much fanservice. in general i think s2 was a little too aware of their fans as it was (while also being censored and cut ironically). in reference to the boyfriends line it’s very cute but it wasn’t something we needed clarification on. we the audience know their relationship. though i’m still thankful to samba for sharing it.

#blah blah blah too much fan service #ultimately affects and cheepens the writing #bc instead of making good character choices that make for a compelling storyline #you’re catering to a fanbase #i’ve seen it happen before and it never ends well #i liked seeing that they made the decision to cut it #and the underwater kiss for that matter #oh and the knife throwing scene #bc it shows that they’re really considering their writing #that there’s a level of clear intent there #less is more often times esp if you’re trying to emphasize something later #which is likely why the underwater kiss was cut #regardless i’m glad we got to see it #and the way i see it #it’s a win win situation bc this is basically still canon #ofmd #our flag means death #txt
